Hawaii Legislature adjourns without changing timeshare tax

Aulani

The Hawaii Legislature adjourned on May 5, 2011 without passing any changes to the Transient Accommodations Tax (TAT) on timeshares.

HB809 passed the Hawaii House of Representatives , but the Hawaii Senate took no action on the bill.  HB809 would have temporarily raised the TAT rate from 7.25% to 9.25%.  Another bill, HB1163, which would have tripled the amount of the TAT, was deferred by the House of Representatives and no action was taken on that bill before adjournment.

The Honolulu Star Advertiser is reporting that Hawaii lawmakers might be called into a special session this summer if the Hawaii Council on Revenues significantly reduces the State revenue forecast later this month and puts the budget out of balance.  If a special legislative session is held, revisions to the Transient Accommodations Tax could be considered, but there is no indication that these bills have a high priority.

Under the current Hawaii Transient Accommodations Tax formula, those staying in timeshare accommodations at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa will pay $0.1562375 per point for length of stay.  The chart below shows the amount of tax per night based on the 2011 point chart.
