Hawai'i residents are making preparations as tsunami waves approach in the aftermath of Japan's 8.9 earthquake.
Authorities have ordered evacuations in anticipation of 4-6' tsunami waves washing ashore in Hawai'i. The first waves are expected to hit around 3:07am local time (8:07am EST).
The waves are approaching the Hawai'ian islands from a north westerly direction but officials warn that the waves can wrap around islands, putting all coasts in danger. According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, "all shores are at risk no matter which direction they face."
The site of Disney's Aulani resort places it on a south westerly beach in Oahu--not in the direct path of the tsunami wave but certainly in a location which could be impacted.
UPDATE: Station KAKE in Hawai'i is reporting that waves of up to 7 feet have hit various points throughout the Hawai'ian islands. The largest of the waves thus far were reported on the island of Maui.
Ohau, location of Disney's Aulani resort project, has seen waves rising as high as 3 feet. The waves have swamped beaches but so far have not reached any of the resort hotels.
Tsunami waves are expected to continue throughout the day.
