Today Walt Disney World began random metal detector guest screenings at its theme park entrances.
In addition to the bag checks routinely employed at Walt Disney World theme park gates, some guests will now be asked to pass through a metal detector. Website WDWMagic.com reports that three metal detectors have been installed at the Magic Kingdom, with additional units at the other parks. Guests will be randomly selected to pass through the metal detectors during the bag check process.
The news comes less than a week after Walt Disney World security stopped a guest who attempted to enter the Magic Kingdom with a loaded firearm. When approached, the man began to flee and was later apprehended by sheriff's deputies. The man claimed to have a concealed carry permit, but authorities indicate the permit expired 10 years ago.
Individuals with valid concealed carry permits are prohibited from bringing weapons into a Disney theme park.
In addition to the heightened security measures, Disney has discontinued sales of toy guns throughout Walt Disney World property and banned "weapons, or objects that appear to be weapons" from being carried into its parks.
Finally, costumes may no longer be worn by guests age 14 and older.
