The entity known as "Disney Vacation Club" is a timeshare management company. Other timeshare managers include Wyndham Vacation Ownership, Marriott Vacation Club, Starwood Vacation Ownership and Bluegreen Resorts.
If Disney were to decide that they no longer wanted to manage the Disney Vacation Club system, they could farm-out management to another entity. DVC Members would still retain their ownership, while finding themselves part of a much larger timeshare system with more destinations and (in all likelihood) more competition for reserations at the Disney properties.
