Back in January we learned that the Turtle Pond pool complex at Disney's Old Key West Resort would be closing for several weeks this spring. Now the exact dates have been revealed.
Turtle Shack snack bar
Turtle Pond Pool, Turtle Shack snack bar and Flying Fish gameroom are scheduled to be closed from April 21 to June 22, 2018 for refurbishment. During the closure, all of the other resort pools will remain available to guests including the feature Sandcastle Pool and leisure pools in the Miller's Road and South Point areas.
Old Key West is in the midst of an extensive "hard goods" refurbishment of all guest rooms. Villas in buildings 30-33 have been updated and reopened to guests while buildings 34-35 are currently being updated.
To coincide with the closure of the Turtle Pond Pool, expect several adjacent buildings in the 40-44 range to close for renovations. Additional details regarding the renovations can be found in our prior coverage.
Refurbishment dates are estimates only. The exact closure dates for the pool may be adjusted if necessary.
Usually a hard goods refurbishment could replace the appliances and TVs, tile, showers, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, light fixtures. Of course not everything will be replaced as some of it might not need it as the TV could have been recently been replaced. Usually a hard goods will also mean a new design for the villa as well. They consider whether kitchen cabinets need to replaced versus being repaired and repainted or finished.
Both a hard goods and soft goods can include new paint, new carpet or flooring, even new furniture it is determined it is needed.
Soft Goods, also replaces the bedding, towels, and can include reupholstering furniture, like the pullout couch, chairs and ottomans. Sometimes they might repaint the cabinets and furniture.
Keep in mind that Old Key West is the first resort to get a hard goods refurbishment, so we are just now seeing the results. Also DVC has now a plan in place that a hard goods refurb will happen at each resort every 14 years and a soft goods every 7 years.
