In a mildly sensationalistic article, the Honolulu Star Bulletin details how Hawaii residents currently cannot purchase an interest in the Disney Vacation Club when contacting DVC from their homes. Each US state has its own registration process which must be completed before a timeshare developer (in this case Disney Vacation Development) may market products to its residents. Currently Hawaii and Nebraska are the only two states in which DVD is not registered to market.
The article details the attempts of one resident, Lindsey Pierce, to contact DVC regarding an ownership interest in the Vacation Club. "They wouldn't even respond to my phone calls or messages once they knew that I was from Hawaii" said Pierce. This is standard operating procedure for DVC, who appears to be bound by laws prohibiting contact residents of states in which DVD is not registered.
Disney spokeswoman Lisa Haines is quoted as saying that "...[c]learly the game has changed. We'll complete the requirements in plenty of time for Hawaii residents to take advantage of this offer." Curiously it does not appear that the Star Bulletin questioned Ms. Haines as to why DVD did not previously register to sell to Hawaii residents.
The article does mention that Hawaii residents can currently discuss a DVC purchase in-person with a sales representative if they should choose to travel to sales facilities in California, Florida or Illinois. It does not point-out that buying a DVC contract via a resale broker or directly from a current owner are also avenues a Hawaii resident is currently able to pursue.
