Pleasure Island's Days Are Numbered

Disney has announced that the remaining clubs at Downtown Disney's Pleasure Island will permanently close on September 27, 2008.

According to the information posted on Allearsnet.com:

"We are committed to offering guests new and exciting experiences they can only have at Walt Disney World Resort," said Downtown Disney Vice President Kevin Lansberry. "Our bold new vision for Downtown Disney reflects the feedback we receive from our guests each and every day and will enable us to continue to offer the high-quality entertainment that is our hallmark."

Over the next year, the 120-acre entertainment-shopping-dining complex will add a number of one-of-a-kind, immersive experiences for guests. Downtown Disney will even get its own iconic attraction, in the form of a giant, tethered balloon that will take guests 300 feet into the air to view the amazing vistas of Walt Disney World Resort.

Over the last three years Disney has tried a number of different approaches to improving the financial viability of Pleasure Island.  They have experimented with numerous admission schemes, the makeup of the clubs have been altered and other moves were simply designed to reduce operating costs.

For many years Pleasure Island celebrated New Year's Eve on a nightly basis with a brief fireworks display.  The design for Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort, which opened in 2004, included a waterfront fireworks viewing platform for guests wishing to view the midnight display.  However the fireworks show was eliminated back in 2005 during one wave of the entertainment district's cost-cutting moves.
