Walt Disney World beaches currently closed

Due to the tragic alligator attack which occurred on Tuesday night, beaches around Walt Disney World are currently closed to guests.

Update 6/15 4:45pm:  Rescue workers have recovered the body of the missing boy.

The search continues for a 2-year old Nebraska boy who was carried away by an alligator from the beach adjacent to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.  The family had been walking along the beach in shallow water when the animal attacked.  The boy's father was reportedly injuried during an unsuccessful rescue attempt.

Authorities are using helicopters, dive teams and sonar-equipped boats in their attempt to find the missing boy.

In the interest of caution, all resort beaches are currently closed to guests.  DVCNews.com friend Marilyn (idratherbeinwdw) posted a photo of barricades at Disney's Yacht Club Resort on our Discussion Forum.

Watercraft travel has also been suspended on the Seven Seas Lagoon.  Resort marinas are currently closed and buses are being used to transport guests between all destinations normally serviced by boat.

On Wednesday afternoon the saga came to a sad end as authorities announced that the boy's body had been recovered.  He was located approximately 10-15 yards from shore, submerged in 6' of water.  It is believe that the child had drowned.

This is getting an awful lot of coverage so I'm not going to post a story on the front page of DVCNews. Here's another recently-updated story from USA Today:

Just an awful, heartbreaking story.

This is really, really terrible, i feel a deep sadness for the family struck here.
It is scary to think of, but someone local told me on our first visit that , "This is Florida, if there are water, there could be alligators"
But I also acknowledge the fact that when small children sees water it is almost an instinct to wade out and play in it.
To fence the resorts in is probably not the solution, although terrible things like this might lead to some
reactions by Disney to move in that direction.
It is not like Orlando has not had it share of misery this week, when something like this happens.

Horrific. My heart goes out to the family. Certainly a reminder that nature needs to be respected.

I feel awful for this family, and having gone to WDW with a 2 yo, I know how very quickly something can happen to them. However, I really hope that Disney doesn't do something to "further protect" people from this type of thing happening, like put up a big###s, ugly fence in front of the lagoon. Sadly, accidents can happen.
