Walt Disney World Gradually Reducing COVID Safety Measures

WDW Vacation Planning News

Over the last several days, Disney has taken a number of steps to reduce the disruptive safety measures introduced in 2020 at its theme parks and resorts including Disney Vacation Club locations.

Late last week, Disney revealed that temperature checks would be discontinued at its theme parks and resorts. The temperature checks had been in place since the parks' reopening in July 2020, and were later added to some resort-based dining establishments. The screenings were used to deny entry to anyone with a temperature over 100.4 degrees farenheit. Fever is one symptoms of the COVID-19 virus.

Now it appears Disney is poised to reduce its physical distancing measures as well.

Disney's "Returning to a World of Magic" webpage--which outlines current health and safety protocols--has been updated to remove mention of a 6 foot physical distancing requirement.  Accompanying text explains their policy in the following manner:

"Temporary adjustments are still in place to promote physical distancing. While we will reduce physical distancing measures for Guests across many areas with a gradual, phased approach, six-feet distancing measures will continue in all dining locations, merchandise stores and in areas where Guests can temporarily remove their masks."

In late April, Orange County reduced its physical distancing requirement from 6' to 3'. It appears that Disney will retain the 6' guest separtion in restaurants and other mask-free zones, while allowing less space between parties in areas where facial coverings are still mandatory.

Several weeks ago, Disney lightened its facial covering policy to permit removal of masks during photographs. Guests are also now permitted to use self-serve beverage dispensers at resort and theme park locations which had been manned by Cast Members since last summer.

A number of websites including WDWNT.com recently reported that trash receptacles are no longer being propped-open and safety signage has been removed.

Orange County is nearing a point where 50% of all residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, at which point Mayor Jerry Demings has committed to elimination of all outdoor mask mandates. Indoor mask requirements will be removed when 70% of residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

Walt Disney World is private property and has the right to enforce its own policies outside of state and local guidance.
