World of Color perk for DVC?

DL Vacation Planning News

A recent post from Disney blogger Al Lutz of MiceAge.com discusses how crowds will be managed for the new World of Color show at Disney's California Adventure, and suggests that Disney Vacation Club members may be eligible for a guaranteed viewing opportunity.

According to Lutz, World of Color will utilize a Fastpass-type resesrvation system which he refers to as Showpass.  Viewing capacity for World of Color is limited to about 9,000 guests per presentation, and Showpass will be used to allow guests to reserve their spot early in the day.

Lutz indicates the current plan is to use the Fastpass machines for Grizzly River Run to distribute World of Color showpasses in the morning.  However, there would not be a full 9,000 passes distributed as some would be retained for other uses:

"The Showpass concept is set up to favor a person arriving in the morning and spending the entire day at DCA, and Showpasses will also be pulled out of the system in advance and given to people staying at Disney's hotels as a Disney Travel Company and Disney Vacation Club perk."

If this plan is implemented, it remains to be seen exactly how admissions would be divided among hotel guests.  The three Disney-owned hotels can accommodate well over 9,000 guests on a single night.  If the plan is to provide Showpasses to Disney Vacation Club members and registered guests, it appears likely that guests would have to select a single day to attend World of Color or that the resort would designate a day on which the complimentary Showpass must be used.

The recent expansion to Disney's Grand Californian Hotel includes a 5th floor viewing platform which should provide an excellent vantage point for World of Color.  However the platform will only accommodate a fraction of the hotel's guests.  No information is yet available as to how admission to the platform will be managed once the World of Color performances begin.

World of Color is currently scheduled to soft open in late-March 2010 with the official grand opening to occur in late-April.
