Caribbean Beach renovation begins

Disney has begun renovating another Walt Disney World property with upgrades that may include a new transportation option and Disney Vacation Club villas.

Website LaughingPlace.com reports that construction has begun in earnest at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort.  Earlier this year Disney confirmed that updates were planned, with the Centertown shopping and dining district scheduled to close at the end of April.  Photos posted to LaughingPlace showcase the closure of Shutters restaurant, along with construction staging including the installation of fencing and scrims to mask the work zone.

Permits previously filed suggest that several existing guest room buildings in the Barbados section would be demolished to make way for a new structure, potentially designed to house DVC timeshare villas.  In February Disney confirmed plans to update the shopping and dining facilities at Caribbean Beach but no specifics were shared.  To date, Disney has neither confirmed nor denied any DVC involvement in this project.

Numerous sources indicate that Caribbean Beach will eventually serve as the hub for a new gondola-based transportation system linking the resort to both Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Another Moderate hotel--Disney's Coronado Springs Resort--is also in the early stages of a signification expansion.  A 15-story tower will be constructed, housing 500 new rooms and a rooftop restaurant.

The official Caribbean Beach Resort map, available on the Disney website, has been modified to reflect some of the changes at the resort. The entire Barbados section -- all six buildings -- and half of the Martinique section -- another three buildings -- no longer appear on the map.

Also, the official Coronado Springs Resort map has been changed to reflect the construction occurring at that resort. Cabana building 9B, which was near the entrance to the resort, is now gone. Its location will be the home to the new 15-story high rise being added to CSR.

I had my hopes until I saw "15 story high rise". I was thinking that a resort of the same, condo style as OKW might be perfect here. And I was hoping for lower point values. Oh, well-I can still hope for that.

The 15-story high rise building is being built at Coronado Springs Resort. Disney has confirmed its plans for a high rise at CSR with a restaurant at the top.

Disney has not officially mentioned anything for its plans at Caribbean Beach. We know from plans filed with the South Florida Water Management District that there will be a single building housing the new 'resort', but we don't know how many stories it will have.

Excited about this.
My only stay at Caribbean Beach Resort was also my 1st ever WDW visit way back in 1991.
Should DVC go in there as speculated, I'll be booking a stay very quickly after it's available.
