2014 Aulani tax update

The formula for Hawaii's Transient Accommodations Tax includes the annual dues figure for stays at Aulani, Disney Vacation Club Villas.  Following is an overview of how the tax amounts have changed with the new 2014 dues.

For all stays at Aulani, the State of Hawaii imposes a daily transient accommodations tax based on the number of Vacation Points required for the stay. The State requires that the tax be collected from the guest occupying the timeshare and is collected only if the accommodation is used. Thus, the transient accommodation tax cannot be included in the yearly maintenance fee paid by Aulani owners.

The tax is computed by taking one-half of the yearly maintenance fee, multiplied by the number of Vacation Points for the length of stay, multiplied by a tax rate of 7.25%.

For 2014, Aulani's yearly Maintenance Fee is $6.4378 per point. The proposed transient accommodations tax per point is:

$3.2189 (1/2 of the 2014 MF of $6.4378) * 1 (a single point) * 0.0725 (tax rate) = $0.23337 per point.

A 7-night stay in an Ocean View studio during the Magic Season at Aulani requires 203 points. The transient accommodations tax for the entire length of stay is $47.39, or $6.77 per night.

The tax must be paid at or before check-out. The amount of the tax will vary from year to year and is subject to change.

Its interesting that DVC's Transient Accommodation Tax chart for 2014 displays the tax rate for the new Standard View Hotel room category. However, Aulani's 2014 point chart doesn't show the cost of the Hotel rooms. That category does appear on the 2015 point chart. In early January I spoke to a CM at Member Services and she said they had no information yet on the Hotel room category and they they were no available for booking at this time.

After just making a reservation for a hotel in Vancouver, BC, Canada for one night before a cruise, the transient tax for Aulani seems cheap. I think we are paying $60 in taxes for our hotel in Vancouver.
