According to reports, Walt Disney World has begun a limited test of a self check-in process which would allow guests to bypass a visit to the resort front desk upon arrival. Among the resorts participating in the test are two Disney Vacation Club properties.
Website PortOrleans.org was among the first to report that Disney's Port Orleans Riverside and French Quarter are set to being a two week test of a guest self check-in process. From June 16 - June 28, 2014, guests will have the option of skipping a visit to the front desk, receiving their guest room number via text message when it is clean and ready for occupancy.
In order to participate, guests must have a My Disney Experience account and have received their MagicBands prior to arrival at Walt Disney World. They must also have completed the online check-in process, entering credit card information, PIN numbers, room requests and other details regarding the upcoming stay.
Eligible guests will receive an email several days before their stay, informing them of the self check-in option. Those wishing to take park in the test need not visit the front desk upon arrival. The assigned room number will be sent when the room has been prepared, and guest MagicBands will already be programmed to activate the door locks.
The self check-in process is completely optional. Guests can still choose to visit the front desk to discuss the room assignment or other needs.
Other resorts reportedly participating in the test include Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge and Villas, Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Pop Century Resort.
At this time there is no word on whether Disney plans to expand the test to other resorts, or if they intend to make this a permanent offering should the experiment go smoothly.
