I have great faith in the Disney Imagineers' ability to create something really special. Case in point: How many people would have imagined that Disney could take a simple carnival ride that takes guests up 10 stories and drops them and turn it into the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror?

I'm with you. I can only imagine how beautiful the area will look. If they design a flying coaster I'll have to take a pass. I can't ride those either they make me sick or I feel horrible for the rest of the day. Hoping for something different than a sim though. Unless it's similar to HPatFJ with animatronics and movement built in. Though I can see something akin to a different version of the new Star Tours.

This from the Disney Blog site:
1) TIMING
We got quite a few questions about the timing of our first AVATAR experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, including this one from Adam, “Any idea when the experience will be open to guests?”
We’ve just begun the design phase on our Animal Kingdom project and we expect to begin construction in 2013. From start to finish, a project of this size and scope takes about 5 years to design and build. We can’t give you an exact date but we know that when it’s complete, it’s going to be a truly unforgettable experience.
2) IS THIS A PARK EXPANSION OR WILL “LAND” REPLACE SOMETHING?
Several of you asked a similar question, including Doug from Utah – “Will it replace any existing attractions in Animal Kingdom, or will it be built in a new parcel of land within the park’s boundaries?”
Well, Doug, we’re just beginning the Blue Sky process so I don’t have much to share about how we are going to execute our vision for our first AVATAR land but we’re focused on this being an important addition to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. I look forward to sharing more details as our plans progress.
Someone mentioned Camp Mickey and a bulldozer..... do an airial google map view of the park. Camp Mick doesn't have enough room & too much important infrasucture behind it to be a location option.
It also APPEARS they are looking to add an attraction without closing an existing one. I really don't consider Camp Mick an attraction, but FotLK is back there (although it belongs in Africa Land)
The 5 year timeline sounds way to long. They need to bring the project to market faster than that.

Considering Avatar 2 is estimated to come out Christmas of 2014 and Avatar 3 a year later, I imagine they're working on having the park operational to coincide with the hype of the sequels. That gives them two years to build the park but I don't know how much time prior was spent in designing. I can't imagine them missing the release date for Avatar 2 if at all possible.

Common sense would tell us all that it would only make sense to have the new land opened in time to coincide with the premiere of the sequel in late 2014. But we are also talking about a company that continues to run movie-themed shows & rides throughout it's parks that are far beyond their expiration date. Captain EO, Honey I Shrunk The Audience, Indiana Jones, etc. What I'm getting to is that I don't believe they will rush this project in anyway in order to make a deadline of the 2nd or 3rd movie's release. What Disney will look at is how long they can make that area pertinent and getting the most interest in it as possible over a very long period of time, well after the movies are an "afterthought" in society. I truly think we won't see the Avatar Land opening until at least early 2016.
