I've worked with servers -- a lot. There's seldom an excuse for massive improper power-related shutdowns. All our servers had standby battery power. If we lost power the standby units would instantly take over. Then you'd manually shut things down, or, more likely, if power wasn't quickly restored the servers would cleanly shutdown by themselves. I recall the major blackout a decade or so ago -- when power was restored all the servers I was in charge of were back up within minutes.

All my computers at home have similar protection. It's pretty eerie when power goes out and the computers don't even blink. Television is protected too. A couple of times I didn't even know the power went out until the backups started sounding alarms. Uninterruptible power supplies (UPSes) are awesome.

Hmmm, after reading bigcu's comments methinks maybe the title of this thread should be changed to 8/10 outrage. Especially since it happened again today.

I agree. Full explanations are still pending and I'll be watching carefully to see what they have to say.

Been with same web host for at least 2 years now. Their customer service is particularly good compared to others I've worked with. Many seem to provide support only when absolutely necessary--these guys have always been ready and willing to help. So I'm not inclined to simply dump them and move on to something else. But obviously there are fixes warranted.

I'd love to hear more about what happened if/when you find out Tim. Makes me wonder if some infrastructure transfer system went out and caused the standby power and/or generator(s) (assuming they had them) to be unable to kick in...

In any case, glad the site is back up and I hope it stays that way!!!

These things happen. When I couldn't get on, I just figured there was a server issue.

BTW, I'm sitting on the couch in my room at the Sharaton Safari, leaching off someones wireless connection. Heading to the pool soon. TTFN.

Personally, I was going through withdrawal during the blackout. During the second blackout I found myself actually going to the DVC News Twitter and Facebook pages to have a look see.

Agreeing with Disneygeek. A good data center will have UPS systems (battery) for momentary blips and short outages (minute or two). However, beefy servers are power hungry but also have lots of redundancy built in. A good data center will capitalize on those redundancies and utilize multiple power supplies in the servers themselves, with each power supply fed by a different circuit. The different circuits would then be fed by different breaker panels, which are in turn fed by different outside transformers. Each server has its own UPS, but when power is lost, those only last so long. That's where diesel generators come in. You have one for each primary circuit, so if circuit A, fed by transformer A, goes out, generator A would kick in until service is restored.

Tim, my question to the hosting provider would be - what redundancies are there, are there UPS and generator capabilities, what are the trigger points, is there a secondary mirrored site in case the worst happens and all power (generators included) goes out? That's what corporations do, so why not a hosting provider that holds businesses hostage when they have issues?

Having a hosting provider that does all those things prevents DVCNews withdrawal!
