Thanks for noticing the release date for the Pixar stamps. I was so excited about finding the artwork and in a rush to post it on the Forum and I didn't read the entire press release from the USPS.
No, it doesn't surprise me that "Ratatouille" was included in this set. In 2008 it received five Oscar nominations and won the Oscar for best animated film. It was probably more popular with older adults (age 50+), which matches the demographics of the average stamp collector. And stamp collectors generate much needed revenue for the USPS because they buy stamps and don't use them. I also suspect that Disney and USPS would love to issue another series of Pixar stamps in future years. Another issuance could have Mike and Sully, Woody, Jessie, Nemo, the Parr Family, and Flik, to name a few.
The real trick with these Pixar stamps will be trying to find them at your local post office. In the past few years, postmasters have been very reluctant to carry a large and varied stock of commemorative stamps on hand. The more stamps on hand, the more inventory control issues arise at local POs. And stamps that are unsold have to be sent back and destroyed. I usually have to order new stamps from the USPS online site because I rarely see them at my local POs.

I see your point about Ratatouille Wil. I know the film got a lot of critical acclaim (including the Oscar), and although I don't think it was as successful with the general population you are probably right about the demographics. If older folks liked the movie and they are buying the stamps that does make sense to me.
And of course your other point, that there will be more Pixar stamps released, is a good one. I sure hope so, I would LOVE to have Jessie stamps. In fact my one complaint about this is you can't buy just the characters/films you like best. As you probably know, it's been that way since they first started releasing Disney stamps. I for one am sort of "meh" about Cars and Ratatouille, but I adore Up and Wall-E. Hey anyone want to trade once they are released?

I love the stamps! Can't wait for them to come out and hopefully they won't be TOO hard to find!

Mar- I may consider some trades...
Just would seem funny to use a bunch of stamps to mail stamps back & forth so we need to come up w/ a park meet someday (even if it were a while off before our paths meet)!

Second Set of Pixar Stamps Due in 2012 –
04-25-2011,09:44 AM
In its May 9, 2011, issue, Linn's Stamp News is reporting that the United States Postal Service will issue a second set of stamps depicting characters from Pixar films. The USPS has not yet released any information about which animated characters will appear in the second set, nor has it indicated when the set of stamps will be released in 2012.
The first set of five Pixar stamps is scheduled to be released on August 19, 2011, in Anaheim, California. The set of stamps are titled "Send a Hello" and are denominated as 'Forever' stamps, meaning they will always pay the first-class letter rate, which is currently 44 cents. Here is a USPS publicity image of the 2011 Pixar stamps:

I like the idea that these Pixar stamps will be forever stamps. We should buy extra. I noticed some posts that mentioned that it's hard to find the stamps locally. We have found that the local Post Offices don't get in many stamps unless they have a philatelic center attached. Most of those are located in the downtown Post office in larger cities. We usually just order them through the post office website, usps.com. Of course these stamps are still not available even on the website. You can probably preorder them in July though and they'll mail them to after they are released on August 19th.

OK, we know that The subjects of the first set of Pixar stamps will be Lightning McQueen and Mater from "Cars"; Remy and Linguini from "Ratatouille"; Buzz Lightyear and Green Aliens from "Toy Story"; Dug and Mr. Fredrickson from "Up"; and Wall-E from "Wall-E."
What is everyone hoping for on the second set? I'll go with:
1. Sully and Mike from Monsters Inc.
2. Luxo Junior and the Pixar Ball
3. Incredibles
4. Nemo and Crush and/or Dory
5. I would really like to see more TS characters--Jessie, Woody (I wonder why they only used Buzz for the first set?) Potato Head and/or Rex, but I doubt they'll do more TS so I'll say Flik from Bug's Life.
Looking forward to the release of the first set on 5/9!

I think you mean on August 19, 2011. That's when the first set will be released.
From the usps.com website:
The Send a Hello stamps, which go on sale Aug. 19, are a natural outgrowth of the Art of Disney stamp series issued between 2004 and 2008. Originally intended as a series of three annual issuances depicting friendship, celebration, and romance, the Art of Disney stamps proved so popular that the Postal Service expanded the series to include issuances in 2007 and 2008 to celebrate imagination and magic.
Based on that success, the Postal Service was eager to work with the Walt Disney Company again, choosing to explore the Disney*Pixar films, which offer exciting, contemporary characters and strong themes involving family and friends.
This pane of 20 stamps includes five different designs featuring Pixar characters: Lightning McQueen and Mater from Cars (2006); Remy the rat and Linguini from Ratatouille (2007); Buzz Lightyear and two of the green, three-eyed aliens from Toy Story (1995); Carl Fredricksen and Dug from Up (2009); and the robot WALL*E from WALL*E (2008).--Denise
