OK, this theme has come up in different books now...but this guy ties disassociation specifically to performance. I've only seen it before in relation to bonking or DNFing races. Here's the quote:
"Sport psychology research has found that faster runners tend to focus their attention on the concrete experience of running during competition, whereas slower runners tend to disassociate their attention from the feel of running and their immediate environment, preferring to make shopping lists and play songs in their heads."
From Brain Training for Runners, by Matt Fitzgerald, p. 42.
That's the psychology of big event-style marathons having entertainment along the way. It's to entertain you and to keep you engaged in the here and now, vs. disassociating. It is to help you finish, esp. if you have the tendency to disassociate.
Now in my case, I love focusing on the actual running, and find the extras distracting. But, now that I understand their purpose, I think I'll tolerate the "noise"a whole lot better.
I have to go back and find the book that did a 4 quadrants of runners and their thought process...something like active associative, passive associative, active disassociative, passive disassociative. It was really eye-opening. But not enough for me to remember where I read it....![]()

Outfit...HA I'm just trying to convince myself I can live without my sunglasses for the morning.
But, I've decided I'm going minimalist. I'm wearing my ooolllllddddd New Balance 825s that are in my locker with 471 mi on them. I have a run scheduled when I arrive to take them for a spin. I have another pair of them here with slightly even more miles on them, so it shouldn't be an issue. But, I am bringing a back up pair of Nike Frees just in case the NBs aged badly in my locker in the last 4 months for some reason.
Outfit. Peacock singlet. Nike skirt (it's either black or dark gray). It has a little pouch on the back that I can slip my phone into... Headband. Armband style mini-phone carrier that flaps and annoys me the whole 13.1 miles. That's where my 2 clif shots will go. And a piece of fudge. I really don't need any of that, but in case I get annoyed or a mess, it gives me something to do. I'll carry a throw-away water bottle filled with (My NEW favorite) a slightly dilluted Goya Coconut Water. This stuff rocks. It has super mini-cubes of young coconut flesh, which has largely eliminated my need for the stuff in the flappy phone carrier. Naturally, wright socks on my feet.
I'm bringing another bottle of water to hydrate while we are waiting to be corralled. I'll have coffee and a small amount of shredded wheat in the room before leaving.
Remember, carb loading isn't the night before the race. It should end 2 nights before the race, so your last dinner that should be tipped towards complex carbs is Friday night.
In my Brain Training for Runners book, I read some good stuff last night that I'll quote here later. We've put in the work. We're ready. Win. Lose. or Draw. We're going to have a heck of an experience out there, and from that we can always draw joy.

Note to self, find nono's book!
You know, running is so psychological. I know that is one area I am always fine tuning. For instance, yesterday on my LR, I left my IPOD at home. Just me alone with all the voices in my head. I thought I would go batty, but I surprised myself. I actually enjoyed listening to the sounds of all the birds, frogs, etc. Plus I could really do a lot of self talk. I needed it too. I found I was more aware of my pace, my breathing, and my form. My coach has challenged me to give up the IPOD (and Garmin for that matter
--- but he will have to pry that my dead stiff fingers...). I'm not saying I'm giving up on music all together, but think I might try to go without for a while. Just see where it lands me sort of thing. I think we are all different, and some people may not get distracted like I get with the IPOD. I spend the whole time shuffling songs, letting the song dictate my pace, etc. It was way too much of my run. Who knows, I may go back to it, just a little break from it is maybe all I need. Just rambling thoughts this morning..
But yes, the book is on my list. Maybe it will help my RP too. She is really going through a difficult time right now concerning track. She has decided she hates it so much she may give up the coaching all together. She kicks butt in it, but she just hates it so. All 3 of us know it's just something psychological that is blocking her from it.

I want a DR hat
I think that site might be where I frequent to prepare for Goofy. Can't decide
- may have to do both!!
Should I wear my WISH hat, Carrie? What are you wearing?
Depending on how warm Sunday is I will be wearing hot gear under armour tights, a running skirt, a NB 3/4 length sleeve running top that is orangey-peach, my peacock singlet, and my WISH hat or lime Nike hat. Running shoes will either be my Saucony Triumph 6's or my newest Asics 1140's. I'll have my fuel belt with water, sport beans, cell phone, camera, meds
, and carmex. I usually take a chopped up clif bar but I am tempted this time to take peanuts and candy corn
I'd probably choke though - I think I'll let Mom bring it for me as an after run snack
My worst fear is not being able to find my way to the right place in the am in my rental car
We're staying at Beach Club and now I wish we were at OKW with all of you and I'd cram into someone's car, LOL.
Its nice to have you here, nono, to keep us educated

I have never run with music - just outside noises
Can't imagine running a long time without my Garmin though! No, I would be so sad without my Garmin to continually refer to!!!

Got 3 miles in, way overdressed just now. Felt GREAT! Right at marathon pace.
Just love saying that. (9:10 btw). I'm about 1 lb. lighter now due to the mucus that's out of me. My body really overreacts on the mucus production, which is why I don't sit this stuff out -- I'd be waiting forever to clear up...
I'll do 2 more on the treadmill later with the heat cranked up. Just preparing myself to sweat.
Better not have a cold front blow into Orlando Saturday night...
