While I'm sure there will be grousing (there is always grousing when things change), the RFID cards were extremely convenient on the Disney Dream. Count me as excited about the change!

I wonder if the RFID allows you to find your "key" if you lose it.

Highly unlikely. The way RFID is being used in this case is very short range. You literally have to touch the key to the reader. That's not to say that a higher-power reader couldn't be used but it's not like they have a cloud around the resorts that lets them see where everyone is.

RFID Key –
08-09-2012,06:46 PM
We are staying at BLT in November on points. I'm sure my room will not be on the 16th floor, will I need a cast member to get to the top of the world lounge? They way the story reads I will.

We were at the AoA resort this morning. They have RFID locks on the rooms and at the main pool. However, we were able to walk into a Lion King Building as the locks to the front doors weren't working, but that could be because today is the first day that section is open. They were still working on electrical wiring even though guests were arriving. And someone left the gate to the main pool wide open so we were able to walk around the Big Blue Pool as well. A CM came over and closed the gate eventually. It sort of reminded me of the security at BLT.

Love the New Keys But... –
08-11-2012,03:24 PM
My wife, daugher and I just got back from our home -BLT- where we stayed from 8/2-8/9. Love the new key system! Very simple to use. Used it in hotel, in elevator and at BLT pool.

Having said that, they need to remind staff to a) say Welcome Home upon DVC Member check-in, b) not ask if this is our first time staying at the Contemporary, c) make eye contact with people checking in and d) SMILE! Big drop off in common courtesy from our 2011 stay.

I like the idea of RFID when my hands are full bringing a snack back to the room; I can just tap my wallet which doesn't need as much dexterity.

WNY- Just FYI, needing a cast member to let you up to TotW if your room wasn't on 16 isn't anything new- there used to be a swipe card slot in the BLT elevators.-Craig

We just stayed at OKW and had RFID cards there too. Extremely short range. You actually had to put cards up against the pad which coincidentally had the new nextgen Mickey logo on it. The same logo that's on the new nextgen fastpass machines being installed throuout the parks and also the new iPad/iPhone Disney World app that shows current wait times (even outside the parks.) The symbol is the outline Mickey head with a circle around it.
