We asked once at the Concierge Desk what happened to any leftovers that were left in the rooms when someone checks out, and they said housekeeping is allowed to keep it as long as there is a note left giving them permission to. So we always make sure we leave a note, signed and with our room number, that says housekeeping is allowed to take any leftovers they would like. We ALWAYS buy way too much food when we make our grocery run (what if I want "this" while I'm here?- like I'd die if I didn't have the exact right thing at that moment!)

Incidentally, our reason for stopping at the Concierge Desk that day was because we forgot to leave a tip for housekeeping and wanted to make sure they got it- concierge said we could drop it off there and they would make sure it got to housekeeping (I choose to believe the housekeeper did in fact get her tip because I am an optimist, and I believe in the goodness of Disney people). :-)

That's good news. Thanks for sharing this tip.

I sure hope this is correct (I don't doubt your word disneydork, just hoping the CM at concierge gave you the right info). That's exactly what I did with the case of bottled water I didn't use last trip.

I throw out anything opened, but leave unopened in hopes that the staff will take it. Now, I know to leave a note.

I really appreciate all of the comments members have submitted. This is very helpful. We, too, throw away most of the opened stuff. I leave unopened soda, water, tuna on the kitchen counter. Most jars you really can't tell if they've been opened or not so I don't take the risk.

Cleanup has become a lot easier since we got Owners Locker. I bought zip bags and store coffee, sugar, tea, cereal, all those giant containers of sunblock and shampoo. John at OL says they keep the temp at the warehouse below 78-80 degrees, so the stuff keeps quite satisfactorily.

I often thought it would be great if "we" could plan to leave our unopened milk, soda, beer and package of cheese with someone just arriving.

How we handle it now is to approach people that are arriving with suitcases into our building, and ask if they want some unopened items, because we're leaving the next day, and mostly we get a yes.

A couple years back, one nice mom (who was leaving that day) came back into the resort restaurant w/milk and a large amount of assorted food for our family gathering of kids and grandkids. A balloon was also passed from her child to one of my granddaughters, and it was again passed on at the end of our visit! Very sweet!

I wish I knew if housekeeping could take items, as it would be much easier to leave it in the fridge/on counter. However, if it can spoil, they probably don't want it as they are going from room to room cleaning, and no way to keep it fresh. And maybe the big mouse doesn't want his staff toting beer and wine around, either! LOL Would be nice if they had access to a fridge where they could stash stuff. We are especially conscience of waste during the past few years.
