Refuse service to non-DVC? Imagine how well THAT would work out! If you are not DVC and up there then the observation deck will be crammed...esepcially for holidays and bad weather days.... your plan would be abused beyond belief....and would destroy the relaxing atmosphere at the Totwl.
Your comment on VWL is incorrect. It's not locked. (unless something's changed very recently).

However, I do totally agree with your thoughts against allowing everybody up and simply having bartenders refuse service to non-DVC members.
    That would be a disaster.
"Abused beyond belief" is a very acurate assessment.

I can say that for our July 4 trip this year we had to use our keycard to gain entry.... the reason I remember is because it was a pain in the butt for our party as we had just checked in and had not distributed the keys yet and Naturally we became seperated lol

The entrance we used was near the bus depot and you had to step down a couple steps to the door...and it was keycard required.

But you guys got me to question my sanity so I thought I would call and ask the question...I called DVC member services who in turn forwarded me to the Wilderness Lodge who in turn turned me over to the resort security who said Yes I am NOT crazy and yes that they need keycards to enter the building. Not sure when they did this, or whether it always works or whatever....but that was what they said.

    Interesting.
I wonder if this is an old official policy they're enforcing at certain times, or a new one that will limit access from here out.
    Appreciate your follow up Bob.
I'm sure we'll learn more as some of our VWL regulars visit.

At The VWL, all the doors required a key after a certain hour in the evening (11 ? 12 ? PM). We visited VWL in January and had no problem entering at the main door (the big sliding door) or the doors leading out to the pool area. It's possible some of the "smaller", less used doors may require a key all the time, but I really don't recall ever trying to enter thru those doors. I would be shocked if they were locking door the resort similar to BLT. Our DVC membership allows us access to ALL health clubs, including Sturdy Branches.
