hey everyone I am a new DVC member as of Feb. at SSR right before they sold out. and I heard of DVC making you buy 160 points for your first time. but i heard of times were 100 could be purchased for the first time. however they were letting me buy only 50 point. and i have never heard of that. so my question is, is it more normal than i think or is it completely unheard of?

There have always been minimum purchase amounts and you are right that DVC is allowing a 50 point buy-in.

Really! I told a friend they had to buy 160 pts because that's what they website posted. 50 is perfect for her. Maybe 75.

What I don't know is if it's limited to certain resorts. And you would pay full price, no discounts.

For so little points I would really consider buying resale. You'd save a ton of money. The real advantage of buying direct is to have the ability to use your points for the Disney Collection, DCL and other Disney Resort Hotels. But with so few points you couldn't afford to stay at those places on points anyway.

it's not limited to any resort, you can go to any of the DVC resorts. Also, yes i would agree it's a waste to pay full price if you would only go to Disney resorts, so buy resale.

however for my wife and my instance, we are new parents to a baby boy and wanted to become a member to go to different places to show him different cultures once he is older. so we wanted to buy small first so we still can go on vacations to WDW which we love to do, then keep adding on once to get more Home Resorts for the DVC resort and more points for Adventures by Disney or DLC or anything else we could use the point's for.

I think what she meant, is that the 50 pt minimum may only be available if you buy at SSR, and not if you buy at BLT or AKV. Once you own, you can always book at any resort (at the 7 month window and if available).

50 its seems so small to me... I don't know if I could ever have enough points!

    HAHA..

    Good luck with your purchase!!

If you can handle the studio's with a baby and plan on vacationing in the Fall / Winter season that you can do a lot with 50 points. Borrowing a 26 poiints from the next year lets you do a 7 night stay at OKW mid-September for 76 points. Then the next year borrow again and by the third year you can vacation elsewhere (seeing those different cultures). I can see the do-ability of that.

Having just bought 25 points, my understanding is that DVC will let you buy a 25 point minimum directly from them but they require a cash purchase (credit cards ok). If you need to finance your purchase, a 50 point minimum is required. This is how it worked for the Boardwalk.
If seeking discounted Disney direct purchases, we were told to buy a larger number of points-these would have minimums.
Bank and Borrow. Good idea. We started with a small point contract 3 yrs ago, less can be more, because we wanted to get an idea of how it all worked and what fits our vacation preferences. Having spent a few nights at the resort, we decided to add a few more points to be able to bank and borrow for a week's stay at our home resort-with a preferred view. Some like being near animals or up in the trees. We prefer looking at Crescent Lake and the Boardwalk.
Don't forget that there are reputable companies renting points and Disney rents a small number of points to add on to a reservation. We will probably rent if we need to add on or want to book a time other than our point stay.

I had not heard of Disney renting points if needed for a reservation before. Would you please give more information regarding this for me. My hubby thought he once read something about it and could not find any additional information how this works.

Would appreciate some feedback on this.

    Thank You,
    Mystic

Disney will rent a small number of points per stay. Sign into your account or call member services for details. dvc-rental.com rents points and is on Facebook with available point updates. The Timeshare Store in Orlando also rents points; go to www.dvc-resales.com to get on their point update list. Whether renting points from an owner or 3rd party, an average would be around $10-12 per point. Points used for last minute trips typically rent for $8.00 per point, just keep in mind this means fewer dvc openings and you might not be able to book your first location choice. Disboards.com used to show postings from owners wanting to rent their points. Not sure if they still do.
