View Full Version : Just joined DVC--finally

I just joined DVCnews.com forums this am to ask a question about the DVC waitlists, when TJKraz recommended I post a new thread to celebrate joining the DVC. Yesterday I finally took the plunge and bought 100 points at AKV. As I'm single (though I plan to vacation with friends and family) and still in school, I felt I could reasonably afford this much. I have been planning a trip to the GF for Sept for almost a year, and have talked my cousins into going with me (obviously, not much talking needed there), when it became possible for me to buy now when DVC started the 100 point minimum first purchase.

Since I am spending ALL that money on the trip anyway, I thought I might as well buy into the DVC now. Though I know it is not point-efficient for me to stay there, I have planned on the GF for so long, I'm not ready to give it up. Because it cost so many points, and I only have 100/year, we will be splitting our stay between the GF and the VWL. Well, right now it is 3 nights at the GF, one night at OKW, and one night at VWL, being waitlisted for the other night at the VWL. I don't think I'd mind too much having to stay at three resorts--it would just move me one step closer to having stayed at each resort. Anyway, another reason I only bought 100 points is because I had such a hard time deciding on a single home resort, I figure I will end up buying into several different resorts.

Now I'm just waiting to get my member ID to be able to make ressies at the GF. I had requested a use year of Oct 07 (so I could vacation on un-borrowed points sooner), and got it, but when I went to make GF ressies this am, I found out I couldn't because I'm within the 120-day window :(. My guide said she could rewrite my contract to have a use-year of April 08. So I have to wait 6 more months to vacation on un-borrowed points. Oh well, I have 50 years!

And TJKraz, I saw you are counting down to your first Disneyland trip! I lived in SoCal for four years and had an annual pass. You will have so much fun! I think some people who are big fans of WDW are disappointed in DLR because it's smaller and right in the middle of Anaheim. To me, I'm in awe because I think, "Walt was here! Walt actually rode the Matterhorn." (My obsession is pitiful, huh). And thanks for putting together this website. The official Disney DVC website stinks in regards to getting actual, factual information. This website really helped me be informed to make the best decision (my guide kept saying to me, "You know so much! When you ask questions, I have to go find out the answers.").

Sorry this post has been so long. I'm just too excited to be concise!

Yeah, I'm pretty excited. We have a longtime DL vet, and former Cast Member, serving as our tour guide and vacation planner. So I think we're in good hands.

I just hope it doesn't prove to be a letdown for my kids (ages 5 and 7.) I'm looking forward to not having to drive or walk 20 minutes to get to a theme park. But I hope the kids don't start asking "when can we go to the OTHER parks" after we have hit DL and DCA.

We're all happy we were able to help. You'll see a lot of other names here who have all contributed toward making this site the resource that it is.

Congrats on your purchase!!!

Well, I have an update. I was waiting for a rewritten contract with a use year that would allow me to book at the GF for Sept. Turns out the DVC is currently sold out of live inventory for the AKV. My guide told me she put me on a waitlist. Since I still have the Oct 07 use year, I went ahead and reserved OKW 2 BR for the three days I had hoped to stay at the GF (and wait listed at VWL, BCV, BWV). If another use year comes through, then great, otherwise, I guess we'll be staying at in a DVC villa. I'm a little disappointed, just because I had been planning on the GF for so long now. But my cousin, with whom I am going, is being really great. She is saying "We (her three daughters are also coming) are just happy to be able to go, we don't care where we stay," and "If it doesn't work out, maybe it just wasn't meant for you to stay at the GF this time." So, I'm not totally devestated. I had originally joined the DVC knowing I wanted to use points for Sept at the GF (my guide also knew this, but she is being so helpful, I can't totally blame her for my use year mix-up) and was planning on cancelling the DVC if it didn't work out. But my heart is so set on joining, that I'd rather stay somewhere else than go back to my original reservation. I have 50 years to explore the whole place! Plus, even if we pay for the dining plan (we were previously on free dining) and park passes, I still am saving serveral hundred dollars. And, if we do end up staying in a villa, I will still have my Oct 07 use year, and won't have to borrow as many points from 08! So every cloud does have a silver lining.

MatterhornMiss,

I'm sorry your original plans aren't working out, but holy gosh! A 2br at OKW is a good spread-out-and-relax destination! I hope you enjoy! After all, that's what DVC is all about. :)

It's not GF, but with teh group you have, a 2BR will be great. You will get your chance at a GF trip. It's so great to know you'll be coming back fro 50 years!

I agree with PoohsPal. You will have another chance to stay at the GF. i was going to do that for my birthday last year, but decided against it, as I ended up going to DL this past February and needed the points for that. I stayed at VWL instead and loved it.

i have a small contract like you, but did not hear that the contact amount had been reduced. I guess I am just too busy to pay attention!

Welcome to the boards and welcome home!

Yeah, does anyone know how long that takes? I'm off work this week, so I'm mostly at home during the day, which means I can be available for the FedEx delivery person.

It usually takes about a week, but you don't need to sign for the package. Just keep checking your front porch. :)

My paperwork arrived today! The DVC sure did everything they could to idiot-proof everything, huh, with the mickey ears and palm trees. My contract even included the new booking rules and made mention of the DVC resorts in Hawaii and Disneyland, but nothing of the suspected Bay Lake Towers. I'll spend this evening looking through that big box of stuff that came with the paperwork. I'm so glad everything is almost finalized!

I am officially a card-carrying DVC member. My membership card came today! Being a member is so great! I'm satisfied--no need for the DVC to start sending payments. I enjoy it up here on :cloud9:
