We have a few DVCNews members that will be doing tehir first Disney race (Princess half Marathon) next March and several of us who have done one or more DIsney Rces already, going from ToT 13k to the Full marathon.
Just wanted to start a thread fro anyone who has any questions about running and/or walking Disney.
To start, I just got a PM about food on the course for the Princess (or Porncess, as many of us are saying due to the deluge of all things princess from Disney lately) and if I carry my own.
They have Powerade and water at all stops. They are about every 2 miles. Looks like there should be one food station. That usuallly means fruit (bananas and oranges) and Gu.
I take my own. In warm weatehr, I take 2 to 3 oz of water or powerade every 0.5 miles. For teh Minnie, I carried my own. We have an amphipod fuel belt. I put 2 - 8oz bottles on and refilled once or twice. For marathon adn all other races, I am spoiled. DH goes with me and takes the fuel belt. I do carry Gu's and other supplies with me but I must admit they are not as heavy.
As for Gu, I tend to have one every for miles (~45 min). So, waiting until mile 10 woudl not do for me. There are many who can survive a half on Powerade and water alone, although it's not recomended to run any further than a half without more than that). I'm not one of those, though.
Let us know if you have any other questions!

For those that think only runners can do these sorts of races, that isn't so. I am purely a walker (ok - I run downhill letting gravity do some of the work).
It is a GREAT form of exercise for me and my past experience with running is that I HATED it. I might transform into a runner at some point when I am no longer getting anything from my walking, but we will see.
The water during the 1/2 was well spaced. I would take two cups. One went over my head and the other I drank. There were also people there giving out Powerade, so I had to make sure I grabbed water :)
For those of you that have never been in a race, you might be startled to find that your first name is on your bib number. Know why? All along the race, you will get people screaming for you - encouragement with a personal twist. It was amazing to hear such personal cheering!
I will post more things as I think of them too.
Hope others will as well.
Laura
HEY! A place where I can put my weekly ravings about running, life etc.
I should copy my last few emails to a couple folks up here. Could spur some discussion....but they aren't related to Disney running per se. Anyone interested?

I am! Doesn't have to be Disney. WIth so many of us training for Disney events, though, I figured we were justified in calling it Disney RUnning. ;)
I think one thing I wish people would have told me up front is that running hurts sometimes. But that hurt doesn't necessarily = injury. If you think about it, when we start down this path of rediscovering one of our most basic forms of transportation, we're clueless. We're a few generations away from when folks would "run to the next town" and mean it! So, it's not like we've been bred for this lately. ;-)
So yeah, it's not going to be great all the time. Your body will speak up a lot! I like to think there's three stages of this talking...sensation, which in the beginning you might perceive as pain. What would I consider sensation? Well anything that goes away within a mile of rearing its head and doesn't return with a vengeance post-run.
Pain is where you've not done any injury, but you've really asked your body to do something extraordinary. For me, that's what I feel the day after a run when I drink booze at night and don't hydrate properly. ALL my fascia actually aches acutely in the morning (planar fasciitis, ITBS, etc). And it HURTS!
Injury is obviously something that needs to be cared for and coaxed back to health so that you can continue on your path. One thing I will say is that most sports med docs these days embrace an "active recovery" so don't sweat that you might get injured. If you do, you'll still likely be able to cross-train and run some while recovering.
Oh and docs, not all docs run or know a whit about running. So, while they know a lot about whatever their specialty is, if they don't run, they aren't qualified to give you an opinion on your running. I kept my podiatrist, a non-runner, because he said just that to me -- and he said if the time comes, he's got buddy podi-runner who we can conference call in on an appt. The time hasn't come. :) But it's nice to know if it does, I've got a shot at getting good info!
Something to read -- there's a few really good ones out there. I've lost a lot of my bookmarks so I don't have my old favorites...:(

Great info nono!
Pain - One of my rules of dealing with pain is that if everythign hurts, you're ok, if it's one specific area, start paying attention. If it doesn't go away ro gets worse, you may want to look at it. If anything hurts enough that you alter your stride, stop immediately! Running with an altered stride can lead to serious injury fairly quickly.
Motiviation - One of the favorite things I picked up trainign for my fisrrt marathon was teh 10 minute rule. When you really don't want to go out, use the 10-minute rule. Tell yourself that you only have to go for 10 minutes. You can quit after that. usually, you are feeling good after 10 minutes and want to continue. If not, though, just give it up and realize your body needed a rest. Most of the time, though, it's easy to motivate to only do 10 minutes and you will end up doing more.

Yeah, who do I see about a butt transplant? :dizzy:
I am not in the best of moods, so I probably shouldn't even be posting, but I think I need to make a comment on the pain thing.
Just a little background on my situation. Last Sunday had immediate pain in left buttock. Finished run, and was miserable. Have not run since. Did some yoga twice this week, and walked a snail's pace on the treadmill. Finally got in to see the ortho guru of the Armpit today. NOT good news. Instead of going with my self diagnosis of sciatica, he said he think it's a disk and I need a MRI. No exercise until he reads the report. MRI can't be done until Wed. Then he was booked on Friday, and going out of town all of next week. I then totally freaked. You mean you want me to sit on my butt, for 3 weeks, without test results? I can sit on my butt for a specific time period with documented evidence that running can hurt me. Not just waiting to see if it will hurt me. Does that make sense? So I did what any emotionally stable adult does, started crying. I guess I was in such shock, I was really thinking it was just a nerve. Of course, crying in the South to someone's mama still works. :wassat: I was fit in on next Friday before he leaves to go out of town with the P.A. by his appt scheduler who shared her box of kleenex.
I guess I say all of this is to say, running is addictive. Race walking too. When someone tells you it might be taken away from you, you really realize how much you love it. I am going to do these races, I may not finish them, but I am going to do them.
Okay, my pity party is over. Back to race talk.
Yeah, who do I see about a butt transplant? :dizzy:
I got plenty to donate!
Hey, I'm putting $25 on Rozzie's self-diagnosis. Who wants to take that action and bet on the doc's diagnosis of a disk problem????

Rozzie - I will do everything I can to scam out of a run adn cry if someone tells me I can't run. I am so sorry. Did I mention that the osteopath I saw last year told that I really shouldn't run anymore? As long as I keep up with my yoga, I am ok. :hug1::hug1::hug1: WHile I don't want to hurt yourself if it is your back, I'm not betting against nono. Sure sounds like sciatica to me.
Cross training - I do yoga adn bike. Used to do Curves, just no tiem with runnign and yoga. Tomorrow, I will try my first swim to see if I can do a tri in July.
I'll take that bet.
So to add to race talk, who does what for cross training?
GREAT! I got action -- payable in :shots: between the Nov. 1 meet up and then March post-race!
So y'all, I'm jealous of those of you who bike to cross-train. I've barely even been on my Beach Cruiser bike since I had ITBS back 2 yrs ago -- 'cause ITBS is even worse for a cyclist than a runner. Mostly I walk and throw my kids in the air for cross-training. And yoga when I can (2x a week).

Actually - I have a membership at Curves and starting Monday *trumpet blare* I am going to start going again before work. It just gets crazy here during the day and I can't get away, so I need to adjust and go earlier.

I bet on sciatic nerve issues...a six pack of Yuengling.
I had a partially ruptured disk in my back from a fall and then a car accident kinda finished me off. It didn't hurt near as much as the sciatic nerve problem did...only I did have problems with it 'locking up' meaning that I could get into the jacuzzi but then sometimes couldn't get out. (same with getting in and out of car.) After the car accident I did some PT on it, but felt it was too slow going. Pretty much just waited it out and it finally got better. For me, the disk was definitely lower spine. The sciatic was definitely one side sort of center of my buttock and pushing in on it (like sleeping on a cup) was really the way to get relief. Like Carrie said, the sciatic nerve seemed to be a problem while lying down and not so much walking around. The disk seemed to freeze up at weird times and sort of dull ache at others...but not at all the same kind of pain as the sciatic nerve.
Did I tell ya the one about going to a doc for a neuroma in my foot? He had me walk and then took X rays and THEN told me that I didn't have arthritis, $500 please. You can bet what I told him...or actually what I told my X ABOUT him. There are good docs and bad docs, but for buttdocs you need a masseuse.:yahoo:

Awww Rozaroo I'm sorry about all you're going through. :hug1: I'm so glad you managed to get in next Friday. I'm with everyone else--not a disk, it's a nerve thang. You're going to be a-ok. :FairyGodmother:
I can't tell you how many times people say to me, "How 'bout your knees?" when they see someone of my ahem, age, running.
I've been moving crap 6 working hours a day for a week-- up and down stairs, on and off trucks, big heavy boxes, small furniture, etc. -- by myself, and I have YET to have one person ask me about my knees! WTH???
For the record, my knees are freakin' KILLING ME. Running doesn't hurt my knees. Trying to be a 30 year old burly mover sure does! I had to ice my knees (both of 'em) yesterday.
I really think there's a sickness in our society when a 43 yr old woman who does something for fitness is constantly questioned and subtly discouraged from maintaining fitness. But, when she does something outrageously strenuous which won't have any long term health benefits, well, that's OK. :headbrickwall:
I might transform into a runner at some point when I am no longer getting anything from my walking, but we will see.
Laura
Triple L,
I meant to comment on this earlier. I love your openness to things changing in the future. I never "got it" as far as running 'till I was 40 and Carrie and Mike Scopa kept encouraging me to run. I wasn't ready until then. Some people will never be ready as it won't be their sport. My sister is one of them. She's 8 yrs. older than me, and she loves to walk and lift. She's not closed to it, simply found her thing, and is happy with it. She loves the fact that I run.
BUT, I sure wish more folks were open-minded like you to the possibility that at some point it might just be the right sport for them. :)

I hear ya'. Already now people are jumping on the the "you are destroying your body from running" bandwagon. This society is weird. I hope the knees are doing better for you today. Ice is wonderful, isn't it!
Thanks Mararoo, Carrie, Laura, Gail, CB and everyone else for all the hugs and support. I am much better emotionally today. I am just ready to get this "party started" and get on with the rehab, whatever it is. I have always been bad about waiting around for bad/not so bad news.
CB, after reading your post, and the differences in sciatica and disk pain, I am going to continue to believe it's a nerve thang too. If I am up working, moving around pain is just bothersome. Trying to sleep, sit, lay down, well, I am glad small children are not around.
So for Carrie and nono, on your Yoga, do you do a DVD, class, or just some poses you have picked up on? I was doing some Yoga thing I TIVO'd off fittv. It was a little more advanced than I was, so I NetFlixed a beginners workout, Wang Fi, or something like that. I can't remember her name but it has lots of long stretching poses, not a lot of balance stuff I can't do. My Doc says I can do Yoga as long as it doesn't hurt my area. Err, Sherlock, I am in pain all the time so I guess that's also off the list?? :silly:

Ok, all you runners, what is your choice of running apparel?
Rozzie
06-21-2008, 12:36 PM
Gail, since I'm still on the TM, I just run in nike shorts and a running bra. I might make the jump to skirts and a sleeveless breathable top when I take it outside.
Ok, all you runners, what is your choice of running apparel?
Well, in the winter, I look like either a painter late for work or a skier looking for a mountain. :) I do use a lot of ski clothes in the winter or my old painting gear over running tights, etc.
In the summer, I go for the good stuff. Nike, Adidas, etc. Their singlets really are close to wearing nothing as far as holding heat. I wear tennis skirts mostly as running shorts ride up on me and apparently my thighs are larger than expected for a running skirt. :oweye: I wear the Nike Border (tennis) skirt exclusively at this point for any skirt and it just works for me. It will take you awhile to find the exact gear that works for you.

Gail - Whatever's on teh clearance rack at Dick's. ;) The only must have is my Under Armour compression shorts. BAd chub rub fo me. The only thing I do is make sure whatever I get wicks and that's easy to see on the tag. Many people get Champion gear from Target adn are happy. SOme of teh skirts are fun too. Runningskirts.com and skrtsports.com are fun. tehre's also a Joe's New Balance outlet (you should be able to google it) that has GREAT deals.
LLL - nono's right, you have a great attitude. On the flip side, it's not fo some. If you never get there, tehn it's not for you. Actually, I am faster when I do a combo. Just do what you think is right for you.
When I started running, my MIL had a fit because my face was red when I finished. When I had teh piri formis issues, she told me, "Well, you gave it the old college try." Hello, I had doen 2 marathons at that point, I wasn't going to give up at the first road block. Ugh.

Hi all! I noticed the new thread and Rozzie's woes and since I am such a busybody, I couldn't resist!! I had atrocious sciatica problems for 12 chronic years. An MRI in the eighth year showed a ruptured disc worthy of surgery. I refused at the time, opting for Motrin therapy because I had an infant that I was not willing to give up holding!!! Four years later, I was in such agony (not kidding, hubby put me in homemade traction) that I went back to the neurologist to tell him to cut on me. Another MRI and he said the area had calcified and surgery was no longer an option, that all I had left was spinal block pain therapy...
About a month later, DH was going to a light touch chiropracter for frozen shoulder and I watched the adjustment. This was in 1998, a few months before we married. Anyway...three weeks later, I was pain free and I have never had more than a tiny pain in the area since then. I was very wary of chiropracters but they really can solve the problem of sciatica.
By the way, Carrie, I thought the Princess marathon was March 8? Are you gonna be there after all?

Lisa - Thanks for the clarification. That's what I get for going from memory. I do not plan on doing teh Princess. I am still hoping for a miracle, though. Well, Dizhoni and I have already fully discussed the matter and even though I still maintain that I am not princess material even if I have married the same man at Disney twice (second time wearing a tiara, LOL), I am likely to run the Princess with mom as spectator. Plus, how could I miss a chance to run/walk/whatever with Rozzie and now Laura :) Hope you change your mind or find some moolah!!
Ooops! Nono too...awesome!

Lisa - I am trying to talk her into it. :) She is kinda a tough nut to crack.
Why don't you come down too? I have already told hubby that this is a girls only weekend and he is all for it (hmmm - is he TRYING to get rid of me? nah - actually he has encouraged it for a long time, I just haven't done it!).
I keep thinking about going to see a chiropractor about this sciatica thing. Your post might just have pushed me over the edge. I am also looking for someone here to go see to get a deep tissue massage and see. We went to the zoo yesterday and it wasn't terrible last night, but it did ache some when I first went to bed.
Rozzie - Remember the old adage that medicine is a "practice" and gather as much info on your own as you can. You know we will keep you covered in pixie dust!
As for walking clothes, I have some nike compression shorts (and a loose pair of shorts to wear over them so I dont scare small children! :w00t:), a bra and sleveless nike wicking shirt. I really would like something that is more of a combo for the top so I need to get online and see what I can find. I am *ahem* too well endowed for shopping in a store for things like this. It is incredibly frustrating actually because I end up having to mail things back that don't fit like I think they will or don't feel like I think they will.
BTW - I got all of my nike gear at an outlet store in Orlando. They had a huge selection.
Did any of you sign up for Her Sports at the marathon weekend of years past? I actually like that magazine because it isn't big on fad stuff and covers lots of sports for women. (although most of the women are quite a bit more intense than I). Anyway - this month's magazine had a special insert that reviewed gear for all different kinds of sports (shoes, bibs, shorts, etc). It seemed to cover most major sports - running, biking, swimming, yoga, etc. I am still reviewing it.
I am so glad to have people to talk to about all this and don't feel so much like I am "going it alone" which can be pretty overwhelming.
:hug1: Yous guys rock!

Hey lots of great news here this morning! Lisa, I haven't decided where I'm staying either, but OKW is probably tops on my list.
One other thing about gear -- in the summer in the humidity (which we have in buckets here at the coast), I find that the top brands singlets or racing shirts are far superior at keeping me cooler than the C9 brand from Target. Also, I really think I got a knock off of an adidas singlet off of Ebay -- it's white and it's a sleeveless oven! So, FWIW, I tell you my woes. But, I sure look like an IRONWOMAN in March running sleeveless in 30 mph wintery winds. :D

ROTFLMAO, nono!!! I've lost my emoticons again... That is what is soooo funny about it: Rozzie, Laura, Nono, me and Carrie at WDW for the princess half-marathon!!!
We may go for BWV or BCV just so we can try something new.
We will also be at WDW in Jan 09 as I signed up for the Full marathon - augghhh! Mom, Dad, Rick and I will stay in a 2bd at OKW. We are waitlisted for SV - BWV but since that is unlikely, we will be hanging out at OKW (which we all dearly love!).
If you did decide to go, Carrie, wouldn't you run? Are you running, nono?
Regarding running wear, I really love Under Armour. I look like a doofus running anytime but winter and even then here in the South because I run clothed more completely due to health issues. So, I like Under Armour heat gear - long sleeves except in real cold weather (under 55, LOL - hey, I am from the South!). Oh, and for the Minnie, I got a black running skirt to wear over my heat gear tights and it made my rear view a bit more attractive, LOL!!!

Hey Lisa, I am so glad to "see" you over here. Soon as I get my MRI results on Friday, I am going to hook up with a chiropractor. I am ready to start feeling better, work really takes it out of my back. Anyhoo, what I was saying, oh yeah, don't be a stranger. Did you ever do a TR for your vow renewal? I don't hang a lot on the DIS, I feel so much more comfortable over here, I get overwhelmed real easy with WISH. Don't get me wrong, they are great and supportive, but I tend to stick with my own folk. ;) It is hilarious, to look at the list for the Porncess and see all of us anti-princessites. :D
So for the Porncess we have...so far...

Mmm, what is this list missing, mmm, Carrie!!!!!! Carrie, we will have a spare couch at OKW you can always crash on for the night too. Really there are no further excuses you can use. :p In case I didn't mention it, I have lassoed Gail kicking and screaming into getting a 2BR at OKW with Scott and I. Well hopefully we'll get in with all the new booking rules.
There is also another bed in the second bedroom if you need somewhere to crash.

Hey guys -- I am still cross-training with moving boxes, beer and hot tubbing, but tonight I think Renee and I will go running. My knee doesn't hurt today at all, so it is time.
I went to a chirunning workshop on Sunday for 7 hrs., and I had a blast! It's so great to get coached again! The trainer is a tri-athlete and his big forte is swimming (I'm a former swimmer). So it was way cool. Also, he has an annual party at his grandmother's home in St. Croix (!) so if we ever want to train up for something a bit different, we could all add St. Croix at some point to our plans. He's also just toying with the idea of virtual coaching -- I'm trying to become his beta 1. I'll let you know how it goes!

Woo hoo nono! Glad you had such a good time. We have a session coming to us but this is an awful summer to try to schedule anything.
As for my tri, it's a beginner and I'm only doing it because I don't want dh to one up me. Plus, there's a lot of cool tri jewelry out there. ANyway, I will likely be dead last out of teh water (1/2/ mile swim), but I shouldn't eb dead int eh water, at least.
Not too worried aout the bike (18 miles). You're sitting, right. How hard could it be? The run is 4.5. I'm sure it won't be easy after all that, but a very doable distance for me.
Oh and I might throw in a half marathon next week. FYI, 3 years ago I would not be able to comprehend being in good enough shape to do a half marathon with just over a week's notice.
I can't wait until ROzzie, Gail, adn Laura get to the point when they start amazing themselves!

I'll go running in St. Croix nono. Sign me up. :)
MRI is complete. Got a phone call at work that the Doc's father died and he was going to have to schedule my MRI results appt for July 16. Errr, had another freak out episode on them, and somehow I got wiggled back in to Friday with the PA. What a long strange trip it's been. I'm going on 12 days without running or any type of exercise by his order. There is no way I'm going until July 16 to get a green light or red light on running. My back only hurts now at work, when I'm moving around 300 lb patients. I am thinking positive.
Love the quotes Laura. :goodvibes:

Thanks Mararoooo. :goodvibes:
Great news! My MRI was normal, so they are thinking just a plain ole' sciatica injury, of which is doing a lot better. I have to have some PT to help strengthen my core to prevent the sciatica from rearing it's ugly head again. The best news was that I am cleared for running. I did get a "running is bad for you" speech mixed in there for good measure. She made a quirp about how runners are going to run anyway, and we keep them in business, LOL. I couldn't help but laugh. I liked the PA a lot, better than the Doc.
I was on W6 of C25K, and she told me to really back up my distance and intensity, not jumping right back where I was mileage/distance wise. Thinking about going back to W4 and starting again from there tonight.
We'll see how it goes... I am going to join a gym this week, and really do some focusing on crosstraining and building up my overall strength. I am just so happy to have my life back. Also I put on 5 lbs in 2 weeks with no exercise. Then again I've been eating like a horse from all the worry and stress--- Not a good combination for sure. :silly:

Yes, I feel like crap now. I'm off my rhythm, but I did run 2x while away in FL. So, now to just get back to it here. Rozzie, one of the things I do when I've missed about a week is I go back to square 1. That's 1 mi of running. Then I do 2 mi the next day out. Then 3. Once I'm back to 3, I'm fine, and slide back into my 20-23 mpw schedule. Also, to me, it isn't worth having to shower again for less than 3 mi, so that motivates me!
BUT, seriously, the night before we left for FL, I ran 1.2 mi and you would have thought if you saw me that I was going to have a heart attack. Then 2.5 the first day out in FL, and it felt good for the last .5 mi. Then I know I'm back. Many runners say they don't hit their groove until mi. 2, so that's why I always encourage beginning runners to get past the 2 mi running mark. I've never had runner's high, but sure get runner's satisfaction from the feeling that kicks in at mi. 2. Seems like many others do too.
Just get out there and do it. You aren't getting more fit thinking about running. Concentrate on the fitness aspect and don't hang the races over your head like a guillotine. :goodvibes:

What's a tri-suit?
It's made to swim bike and run in. It's like 6" compression pants adn a tank. (You can buy them as separates but I got a really good deal on a 1-piece). The bottoms have a little cushion for biking and it's chlorine resistant. There are no changing areas and public changing is against the rules. ;) So, I will likely just put shorts or a skirt over when I come out of the water.

Yeah, that's the part I've been trying to figure out -- what to wear for a duathlon that's a swim/run. Unfortunately, Mr Nono has to be out of town now for it, so I have another year to figure out how I'd do it...this is interesting...I appreciate the post! :)
nono, thanks for the encouragement. I like your idea of working my way back up. When will you start your "training" for the Half? Just wondering if you followed a certain program.
Well, I don't know! My general goal is to run 5 days a week for 23 mi one week, 20 the next. So every other week I have a slightly long-ish run of 7 mi...
Here's how it lays out in an ideal 2 week period:
3 7 5 3 5
5 4 3 5 3
So, in the fall, I'll likely start extending that long run back up to 10 mi once the weather cools off, as I can take Renee with me. I probably will do one 13 miler long run about a month before the race, and then about 10 mi total the week leading up to the race. That way, the 10 +13 are just my regular mileage total for the week.
A big part of the fun for me in running is reading ALL the different theories and training plans, then synthesizing them into my life's realities and building my own plan. My goal for the Porncess is to train well and to have a better experience at the 1/2 than my last one in WDW! I also would like to turn in a time of about 2:00:00, but don't know if that will be possible or not -- it will depend on the traffic on the course (as well as my condition race day, naturally!)

Rozzie - Until April of this year, my half plans were straight from MfM. SO glad you are feeling better. Woo hoo!!
nono - I woudl go for Tri Wear. I think the suit is mostly for the swim and bike (padding). I wouldn't want the heavier padding, as I'd feel it was too much for teh swim. (I'm thinking diaper feel ) I would ratehr have a 2-piece, but that was such a bargain, I coudl not justify almost double for the 2-piece. (Got it at REI.com BTW) I have just been training in a Land's End skirt tankini with runnning bra and comp shorts under. Yeah, I won't make the fashion mags, but it works. You could do a swim tank and bike shorts if you found a lighter pad adn I woudl think tha twould be good. JMO.
Hope everyoen had a good training weekend. I certainly did. DId a half Friday. It was cool outside, so I felt great. (Plus, the tri traning has let me rest my legs w/o getting out of shape). It was a very hilly course adn I got my second best time ever. Woo hoo! FOllowed up with 8 miles on a bike to/from fire works. 30 min swim,. 30 min row adn 60 min bike ride Saturday. Felt like dying the rest of Sat and SUnday, but better today. We'll do a week that's very easy on teh running to make up for the overkill this weeknd.

CONGRATULATIONS CARRIE!
Where do you get all your energy?
I'm on week two of the MfM schedule for walking the half marathon. I'm hoping that I can then do the schedule for walking/run half marathon before the race.
Friday was my cross training day and since Curves was closed I just did the bike at home after cleaning and hosting the 4th Bar-B-Que. Did my walk on Sat. and rested on Sunday.
Well I got 1 mi in this morning, 'cause I needed to get back and straighten up before our (new) cleaning lady arrived. She never arrived because it turns out she was in the hospital and they were taking her off life support today. She had a brain aneurysm yesterday. So shocking, even though I didn't know her well.
Life is short people -- learn to enjoy your training! So, I'm waiting for Mr Nono to get back from next door so that I can go running for my remaining 4...I'm so ready to go RIGHT NOW, and he has no idea, as I normally am not ready at this time. Another set back on the whole training thing this weekend. Been really struggling with Abdominal Pain and nausea since Saturday, a pain I have never had or wish on anyone. Went to the doc today and got some meds, he either thinks it's a ulcer or a bad case of dyspepsia, or my gallbladder. (nothing like the guessing game...) Wants to do a whole bunch of tests, but I'm thinking I am just going to lay low and see if the meds help. Just so frustrating, a few good runs in and then all this happens. But things could always be worse, as nono story points out. I am just tired of feeling like crap, I'm too young to start going downhill.

Just returned from my run...it was dark, but that's OK! Renee got to wear her light up collar, which I swear she L-O-V-E-S! I think she thinks she's Lady (of "and the Tramp"). So I nipped 4 mi in to get a total of 5 for today.
Rozzie, maybe all this movement is moving bad/stagnant stuff out of you? I know my lymphatic system really took a hit at first when I started running...just something for you to think about as you evaluate your symptoms. Hang in there...it's a process...it's not the end of the world! Your body will eventually run out of issues and then you'll just have loads of time to run! :D
Yeah, with respect to my cleaning lady -- she cleaned the new house from top to bottom (took 3 days) to get it ready for us. So, I feel like I have a piece of her here.

Rozzie,
After years of dealing with intermittent heartburn... Debbie (DW) ended up with emergency gall bladder removal last Oct. The were able to do it laposcopicly (sp?) which helps the healing. She was walking (slowly) within a week. She is a new woman now.

However, some people just don't do running. I have firend who have tried to go to a w/r to a r/w ad discover that they're knees can't take it. There's nothing wrong with that. I do recommend tha tyou try Chi Running before you give up on it all together, though if you get to that point. OK, way more than you needed to know. :p
NO Carrie -- you were right...It's a SWIM-RUN du....but alas, it's tomorrow night and Mr Nono will be out of town, so PHOOEY, once again, I'm the one that has to give up my plans. :boohoohoo:
BTW, my money's on Gail evolving into a runner. She has the soul of a runner. Besides, biker/running chicks are the coolest of all*. :goodvibes: Which once again, puts me firmly in dork category, as I've never been on a motorcycle....

Thanks for all the well wishes, I'm doing better today. Still a little woozy but better, I hate working with my Doctor though, as I tried weasling out of my U/S tomorrow and he said I really needed to have it. I just hate tests if they are unnecessary. He just wants to rule out the whole gallbladder issue. But I am feeling confident everything is fine, and will be fine, so much so I'm getting back on the TM tonight. I mean, what's the worse that can happen? ;)

Gail - WHo knows when teh maps will be out. Seems liek fro ToT the maps didn't come out until 3 or 4 months before. Here's teh link for teh marathon map. It sounds like you will just start at teh race track, do a lap, and then head towrsds teh 14 mile mark of teh full marathon and finish teh same as teh full.

The last 3 miles are kind of cool.

Nothing wrong with walking the whole race at all -- how many people ever do that? I was simply speculating that I think you've got runner in ya. The runner in me was well-hidden for 40 years. :silly:
Oh and as for the me being in last place, it's simply FACT. It was a hard pill to swallow for awhile, but when one takes on the stay-at-home-parent role, that's what happens. Your schedule has to be the most flexible to accomodate the family. Oh, and he's not going for work -- he's going to see his M. Well phooey. I looked at the route and if the halfers join in at the 14 mile marker then they don't even get to run through the castle! I think they should start right before the castle and then get driven to mile marker 14.
Aren't ya glad that I'm not a runner?!!!!:yahoo:
CB, you could be a runner around here. My babysitter and I, at the beginning of the season, ran 5 mi so that we ended at the other end of the boardwalk -- then we took the tramcar back and ran the last 1/2 mi back to our houses (same block at the time!).
What's a tramcar?

It was the beginning of the season, so there were about 10 senior citizens total walking the boards...though what you see in that Youtube clip is a pretty small crowd for this time of year.
Carrie,
I have to say, I'm really pleased that the "exciting" part of the race will be at the end. I really was so irritated by all the distractions and was surprised I was! So, dull up front is going to work in my favor. It was nice of Disney to design this race just for me.

OMG nono...... the famously annoying WATCH THE TRAMCAR PLEASE!!! Some things just never change. You know that all the times that I was on the boards when I was a kid I have never been on a tramcar.
Gail, do you remember when it didn't even do the full length of the boardwalk? Now at least it goes all the way to the south end...so we did it on a Thursday night after thinking about it on a Monday evening run. We felt so decadent!
Yesterday, I ran at lunchtime, and in-season, the tramcar can't catch me! It drives slower than a 10 min mile!

No, I was a kid and really didn't have any idea how far they went on the boards. When I was a kid we went to Wildwood, then the Crest and then we went to Long Beach Island when I was older. It's been many, many, many years since I have been back.

As for the race, they can have it on a dirt path to no where and I'll be happy to have it under my belt and complete. I could be running a Half here in Mobile where you dodge stray gunfire and sewage smells. :blech:
I still felt like crap last night, but as I was laying on the couch feeling sorry for myself I had this big lightbulb go off. If I didn't get up and run, I was never going to again. I knew that if I got any more behind in my training I was really just going to throw in the coward towel, so I got off my arse and did my W6 of my extended beyond extended C25K program. OMG, I ran so slow, like a 15:00 pace, and it was misery, but it was a great feeling to finish it. Still felt like crap afterwards, but really nothing lost on that. I figured I will feel like crap if I run or don't, so might as well!! Really it was a line in the sand, and I can't say how much it helped my attitude. Amazing what it can do for you. :)
Oh, no gallstones, had my U/S today. So now it's either a bad arse case of GERD or a ulcer. Both I can run with! ;)

Can I ride the tram both ways and just cheer you on Nono?
Well, no I couldn't ...that repetitious watch out for the tram recording would drive me totallly insane...the drivers must all be deaf or wish they were!
I've hit a low...went to SENIOR tennis today and STILL had the dizzies and had to quit early. I haven't been consistent with my treadmill walks either this last week. I need to get a life. Temps hit 85 here today and at 9500 feet that is HOT. In the old days the temps never got about 79 in the summer. Here's a question: If I'm drinking plenty of water when the temp is high (for here)...but getting more spells (I think) when its hot or I'm hot...could I be missing something like sodium or potassium? Tho I'm not sure what they are, could it be an electrolyte imbalance? Since the doc hasn't called me (and I thought he was supposed to) I'm kinda left in the dark here as to what I should do. (and yes, mom, I ate breakfast and no coffeE!!!)
Rox, glad you're not having gallstone probs tho I certainly don't like the idea of your having ulcers...eww!!!! Random thouight: did they test for preggers?
Gail...you are so BRAVE to be doing this and I applaud you!
CB,
They only play the "loop" of "Watch the tramcar" when someone is obliviously in their way, so it isn't a constant thing. For instance, at certain points in my run a couple days back, I had to keep jumping into the tramcar "lane" (concrete) to avoid thick knots of people on the boards.* I was running same direction as the tramcar, and sometimes, he was pretty close on my tail. Never heard the "loop" at all. It's all operated by the driver. :)
*Somehow, some tourists think a runner coming at them is going to spontaneously mug them, and get appropriately scared when one gets within 2 board lengths...so I do my best to avoid that situation as it breaks the mood!

CB - I would try electrolytes. Can't hurt. Are you eating enough? (Probably been over this, but my brain isn't retaining info like it used to).
Rozie - GLad it's not gallstones, but wish you were feeling better! Good for you ont the run.
Did 60 min bike last night and 15 min run. better than Monday, but still a tough run. Ugh.
Last night I had my first "milk run." I did 3.25 mi with the last 3/4 mi carrying a 1/2 gallon of milk and a quart of kefir. Not the easiest thing I've ever done. Carrying them knocked my pace down by a full minute (not that it matters, just interesting). BUT, it was evening, lots of folks were out on their porches, so I had quite a few positive comments :cheerleader: that fueled me to keep going.
So, now I just need to put in an easy 5.25 mi tomorrow and I'll be back to my first 20 mi week in about 4 weeks.

OK - for someone NOT in the know...a milk run is to build up strength and to make your training a bit more difficult?
I have never heard of this (or if I have, something else has pushed it from the brain cells).
:cheerleader: Glad for the postive comments Nono.

I should set a new record for the longest time for completion (I should be on my last week now, but instead only on week 6 :blech:) of the actual C25K program, but I guess as long as I finish it I won't beat myself up too bad.
Going off to check some skirts out now! :)

The running skirts are the same as what I use for tennis.
I just bought a few on ebay new with tags for $15-20 plus shipping.
Nike is pretty true to size but some of the other brands made in Asia run a size small.
CB, most of my skirts are Nike Border skirts (tennis). I'm definitely going to try the Adidas and Nike ones that are now branded and slightly adjusted for running. Ironically, I can't stand the skirt I got from runningskirts....too tight for the supposed size and makes me look like a cow.

I have a couple border skirts and bought 2 of those on ebay...The Nike one is pretty heavy feeling, but the FEI ones are very light weight and the shorts are shorter than the Nikes(tho not so good for my size as I need more compression IYKWIM)

It has just been to hot and the hot flashes don't help either. Today I did get lucky and got my walk in after the rain while it was still cool out.

I'm with nono. You'll be fine Rozzie. Rces are tools to keep me motivated and rewards at teh end of training. Your big goal is not until April. Our goal for our first marathon was ot finish. That goal makes races fmore fun. We wanted to run teh whole thing but started with a w/r, then went to r/w then to full run. We knew that at any point in time, we may not make the switch and we would eb fine with that. Nothing wrong with walkinh. Plus, doing a r/w tends to be faster than all run. BTYW, if you add 10% to your LR per week, you are up to 8.6 miles fro ToT. Right on track!
I was supposed to be 45 bike and 40 run last night, but a strom made teh 2nd half of our bike extra fast adn nixed our run. :-( Tonight is 30 or 35 min swim, tomorrow is our practice mini tri (20 min swim, 40 min bike, 20 min run). Not a big deal, except dh wants to work a half day and tehn head to MN after. Can't compain to him, but the plan stinks. When I first thought about doing this I thought that I was :silly:, but now that I have started doing it I know that I will be able to finish. Today was the first day that I went to the mall to do my walking because of the heat. It was so nice not getting overheated and being able to walk for the whole time that I was suppose to do. The hardest part about today was when I had to slow down for my cooldown walk. Body kept wanting to go faster and walk longer. But, I just did what the training schedule said.

M-T-T: 8-3-4 S night, race night: 10

Well you SHOULD. Time for a pedic:yahoo:ure!!!!! Lets all go tomorrow!!!!!
Some easy ideas for giving your feet some attention:
Soak 'em for 15 min. once in awhile.
Use some oil or lotion and give them a rub a couple times a week.
Use a footstool or hassack or recliner and put them up for a few minutes here and there.
More involved:
As CB suggests, get a pedicure.
Book a 1/2 hour reflexology session with a massage therapist.
Buy some recovery sandals from one of the big names in sports shoes.

Gail and I are seated in lawn chairs waiting patiently in line to book a OKW 2BR. I have a ressie at SSR, 1BR right now just in case. Gail called the other day MS and asked a few things (we are linking ressies for 1st time and ya'll know how I get easily confused) and the lady said availability was looking good for 2BRs. Then again, we know how that changes on a dime.
We picked OKW for the lower points, I couldn't believe how much higher this season was. Plus it's OKW. :goodvibes:

I think I'm going to arrive on Thurs the 5th. So, I have no idea when I'm supposed to call, but figured I'd give it a shot on the 5th...
As for long runs, I used to rest the day after. However, since I spend time watching good masters runners' logs (mostly on runningahead), they usually do a "recovery" or short run at an easy pace the next day. I've started doing this and find it awesome to keep me strong, and surprisingly loose and limber. Try it and see if it works for you.

I was confused on a spreadsheet Carrie emailed me that had LR's and a short run back to back. Found out my printer was printing it out wrong, but on the other hand, I like your idea of the whole loose and limber thing. It does seem I get real tight after a long (for me) run. No problem. I'm working on dehydrating myself with a bottle of homemade wine from my new next door neighbor. That along with an hour long crying jag sure make me glad tomorrow is a rest day. I'd be one big cramp if I tried to run or walk.

I have been doing the walking training plan in the back of MfM and I'm suppose to rest on Wed. & Sunday. Sat. is my LW day and I have been taking Maggie to a class on Sundays for a while now. We have the class outside at a park and after we are done trying to teach our dogs obedience :rotfl2:we take them for a walk on the path at the park. So for the hour or so while we are working with the dogs and the short walk after it really helps for Mondays walk.
Roz, did you get your bike yet?
Rozzie
07-26-2008, 01:50 PM
Gail-No bike yet, I guess I'll have to ask the birthday santa for it. I wanted a Garmin, but I can't justify it right now as I'm still on the TM. In other news, I graduated myself early from the C25K (2 weeks) to start a training program Carrie emailed me that will help me push up my mileage for the ToT race. It's fast approaching, only 14 weeks!! Have I lost my mind? :blech:
Also Gail that is great about you taking your pup to the class. Peter needs a team of trainers around the clock, he is getting bad. I know it's because he doesn't have the outlet anymore since we don't go to the dog park when it's 120 degrees outside. Soon as it cools off some he's going to be my new running buddy and I bet I'll see a different dog.

Well, today I was suppose to do 5 miles but I only did 4 1/2 because the mall opened and there were to many people to dodge. Although the temp wasn't to bad the humitity was really high so I opted not to walk outside. I'm still not up to the pace that I need to be for the race but I'm down to just having to shave off 2 minutes a mile now. Since I'm hoping to walk/run the race that shouldn't be a problem. Who would have thunk that I would enjoy doing this so much. :confused24:
I usually go to Curves for my cross training but friday I had my hair done so I had to ride the bike at home. I got it for Joe but guess who doesn't use it. I don't have a TM so that is why I go to the mall. You should teach Peter how to use the TM.

Feeling much better. My Doc thinks I had a plain ole' stomach ulcer that healed on it's own. Yahoo!
Yep, I do need to probably do some TM training with Peter. I wonder how long it would take him to get it. The dogs with Cesar look like such naturals when they do it. Don't get me wrong, he's a good boy, just with bad habits--mainly chewing anything that is standing still. He just needs to RUN, his walks don't do a dent in his energy.
Well tomorrow AM, I am going to take a chance and sneak on the TM. I'm on call and have to report to the hospital in 30 minutes when they beep me. But, I can't get behind anymore on my running, so I'll can be there, I'll just be stinky. :p
Got my 8 miles in today. I know, I know, not the schedule I published here earlier in the week, but well, with the whole parent thing going on and mr Nono traveling soon, I decided to get this long run over with this morning.

Well I never got my run in this morning, got awakened by the telephone calling me in at 5am. Got home and exhausted, and now my mom is coming over to bring one of her cars to store in our garage and then Aunt is coming over right after to pick up couch.
Guess it'll be a late night run.
Rozzie,
It was truly a breakthrough for me this year when I learned to run late in the day (9 - 10 pm or so). If you can get through it once or twice, then you know you can do it, and it really opens up your schedule. Not only that, but a post-run late night shower, followed by bed, just somehow seems so peaceful and well, just right! :goodvibes:
Well, Mr Nono's heading back home. Now he leaves at about 5 a.m. tomorrow for his flight as his got cancelled tonight. Luckily, he was only 1/2way to Newark when he got word. So, we'll all attempt to go out to dinner tonight. So, now I have to decide if I'll get up super-early and do my little 2 mi run before he goes, or just do laps on the beach barefoot tomorrow night with the kids 'till the Garmin clocks 2 mi. Decisions decisions. But, I think the beach at the end of the day will win.

Mickey (Gail),
I keep forgetting to ask -- how are your shoes treating you? I just ordered a pair blind on the 'net (I am losing it for sure). They are the New Balance 790s I think. Here's a link -- didn't buy them here, just a good pic:
http://www.shoestation.com/shoestation/product.asp?dept_id=3254&pf_id=PAAAAADAPCLALEFB&ad_id=froogle&key_id=PAAAAADAPCLALEFB&
I'm thinking they'll be good for taking my beach runs longer and of course I'll still probably take them off and run barefoot for a good portion.
Now, they just have to suit my feet!

They both feel great. I like the 805's a little more then the 902's right now, but maybe a month from now that will change. At least they are both comfortable since I changed out the stinky insoles they put in them. I have to put soft soles in my shoes or I will have very sore feet the next day.

Hey all! I had a week fgrom you-know-where last week, but I am starting to surface again.
Great job to everyone on teh progress!
Gail - I am so glad you are enjoying this journey.
Nono's pampering your feet talk reminded me to warn you. Once you guys get into longer runs ~8 to 10 miles, nix the pedicures or inform them to be gentle on your callouses. Those callousees will prevent blisters. If you remove tehm, that will be bad. Kind of a bummer, but you don't want to completely take off what your feet made to protect themselves.
Did my first tri on Saturday. Had some unfortunate events that put a damper on things, but I still did better than expected.

Hope the race went well nono!
10 miles mostly on the sand...finished off goal of 1:31:00 by coming in at 1:31:47...but by mile 2 I wanted to quit as it was very hot and I had abdominal cramps. This race was wall to wall spectators -- very fun as I felt like I was at the Boston Marathon. In addition to all the real water stops, spectators provided tons of other goodies -- incluing oranges, more water, beer, gatorade, bananas, etc. It was truly awesome. We finished down the chute in the ocean up to our calves. Hysterical!
Coming out the other end of the chute, there was a non-stop line of running shoes near the water's edge and lots of finished runners cooling off in the surf. D & I went swimming and it felt GREAT as the ocean is not at normal Aug. temps. Much cooler than usual.
We walked the 8 blocks or so to our friends' place to a post-race party, and it was very nice to reconnect with old friends. I love running and racing. It gets you out. It tests you. It's fun to party afterwards! :yahoo:

Well I joined the health club at the Hospital. A bunch of my coworkers go there right after work and I thought it would be good motivation. I did some cycle thing for 30 min for my XT and it felt great! Was supposed to run tomorrow with some coworkers, but remembered I had a Dr appt I keep rescheduling that I better keep. (GYN to get my slip for my annual mammogram)
I started freaking out about the whole race coming up, but figured I can only do what I can do. The month of July was a wash, with my back, stomach ulcer, and "the move", but that I have 2.5 months to get my mileage from 3 miles to 8 miles. We'll see! But I decided not to freak out about it anymore. What will be, will be.
3 to 8, in 10 weeks? CRAP that's doable...

I ran Wed, running today, and will probably run tomorrow. I usually don't do back to back but feel it's necessary to get the mileage in this week. Thanks for the encouragement nono! :)

Sooooooo guess what I did tonight? Ran outside in the heat. I survived! Man, my area is full of hills, it really messes up my pace. I go so slow up hills, old people with walkers are telling me to move it. But I something neat happened, I fell in love with running again by going outside. It was getting really stagnant on the TM and I needed a change. I can't wait till it cools some and I can start taking Peter with me. :dog5:

Right now I just carry a water bottle with G2 in it but I will be getting a belt at some time. I can't walk for a long distance without taking something with me either.
I carry water (or a dollar to buy a bottle of water) on any run longer than 1 hour. Though, once this summer, after 2 mi, I had to come back to the house and get a glass of water before continuing.
When we run at night in the spring and fall, we stash some water bottles for our long runs in a couple places, as we know there's no one who would bother with them. This time of year, no way!

Well I did my first official LR yesterday, 3.5 miles with doing a 4:1 interval. Did it on the TM, so I could accurately keep track until my Garmin gets here tomorrow. (yahoo!) I am glad today is rest day. I know there are some that don't like doing intervals, I'm just so out of shape, It helps keep me going knowing I only have to do 4 minutes at a time. Maybe one day I'll get to running straight.
I know there are some that don't like doing intervals,
That would be me! :D To be clear, I believe in walk breaks, but when *you* deterimine you need them, not when some schedule dictates. I am really into body sensing, and if you want to walk sooner -- do it. Maybe you'll string together 7-8 min. later if you walk earlier. I think intervals are fine when you are a beginner, but really Rozzie, once you have your first race under ya, you're an intermediate! :cheerleader: So just keep my stoopid opinion in the back of your head and re-evaluate it when you feel it is time.
And, if you want to be hard-core, don't count the walking breaks towards total mileage. ;)
The way you and Gail have attacked this goal, I really don't think you guys are already advanced beginners progressing quickly to intermediates. Once you are there, you're a runner for life! I admire both of you and your passion for this.
Rozzie
08-10-2008, 04:57 PM
Good thoughts nono (like always!) on the whole body sensing thing. I guess I am so new at this I don't trust my thoughts. I am really bad at talking myself out of things, and if I have a plan before I start, and a goal, then I usually do better. I wish I had a inch of the self discipline that you have! :)
So for another question, does anyone take food with them on runs? Like those little Cliff shot things or the sort on LR's. Seems there is a whole industry on just energy snacks for runners. Sure I don't need them now on my puny distances, but was wondering when I start training for the "big one".

Ugh, my Garmin thoughts came too late for ROzzie. Giolf outing Friday, then I went straight ot teh ILs.
ROz - I have that belt. We love it. I take a drink every half mile in teh heat. I have low blood sugar, although not low enough tobe considered low for real. I Gu every 45 min. Switched from Powerade to Cytomax for the tri, though, I I think I could get away with Gu-ing less now. Must experiment. Hooray fro the 12 pounds!
I finally got a run in again. Been too hot since the tri. We didn't pack liquids because it was cold when we started. :( Bad choice. I had to walk about half a mile because it was so hot adn sunny adn I don't do heat. Still, the legs held up fine.
We love clif shot blocks in our house. D runs around the block and insists on getting one. I like 'em 'cause they are somewhat organic. Only use them on runs of about 10 mi now just because it's nice to have a treat out there :D, but in a race, like the 10 mi sand run I just did, I fuel at mi 5 and then again at 8. (1 block total -- I eat 1/2 then the other 1/2). Oh oh oh, and they have some with caffeine, which I love, 'cause my long runs happen before coffee and I get kinda cranky at about mi 8 without the block. So, I guess I do have a reason, but it's not for fuel. I got my thighs for that. Probably enough fuel for a few more seasons. ;)
It is great to practice with a supplement for awhile before you race so you know how your bod handles them.
Rozzie, the discipline will come. You already know you like the running and how it makes you feel about yourself. So, soon, when you miss runs or let yourself walk too much, you'll realize you're only cheating yourself. I read a neat article on Will Smith and he said something like it's your personal devil that starts telling you "Maybe I should only run 3 mi today" when you know you're scheduled for 5 mi. He equated it to people traveling cheating on their spouse -- "Well, s/he will never find out, and it's just this once." It was a powerful message to me. Yeah, no one would ever find out, but you know, and you know you've diminished yourself somewhat by doing it. So, I often think of Will Smith when I'm out there running.

Yes I am, thank you. Coughing is almost gone now. I did get out and walk some on Sat. and today.
From Reuters:
WASHINGTON - People who want to live a long and healthy life might want to take up running.
A study published on Monday shows middle-aged members of a runner's club were half as likely to die over a 20-year period as people who did not run.
Running reduced the risk not only of heart disease, but of cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, researchers at Stanford University in California found.

Yeah Gail I know that look well. The "YOU are going to do a 13 mile race?" With the lovely emphasis on the "you" for good measure.
Well I had a good afternoon, I ran with some work buddies after we got out. We went 3.7 miles, probably walked for .5 out of that. They have a lot of running experience, and have done local races, and one girl has a super fast pace. Well superfast for me is 10:00, and it really made a lot of difference in running with people outdoors. How much better it is when someone is in front keeping the pace! It was hot as hades, but we ran over to the historic district with the big nice homes and the shade of the Oak Trees. But getting there meant running from the hospital via the hood in the blazing sun at 1:30pm on a August Alabama afternoon. I always questioned the sanity of people who run in the heat of the day in summers, never thought I'd be one of them, LOL! :silly: Oh yeah I broke out my Garmin and instantly fell in love!!!!!!!

That's great that you have some people to run with Roz. I know that I can't be out in the heat in the summer so that is why I started going to the mall. The past few times that I have been able to go and walk was outside though. I've missed my Sat. runs the past two weekends because of out trips to be with the family. I have to drop Maggie off to get groomed on Sat. so I'll be able to go out while she is there. It really will be better when I can start going out all the time so that I can start to run also.
Yee ha -- youz guys are doing great!
Missed my 7 miler today (wah wah wah whatever) but did get in 3.5 barefoot on the sand instead. Then drove to PA and saw my parents fight, and then was involved in a car accident just after I left them. Everyone is fine, 'cept for the rim on my car with only 3600 mi on it. :boohoohoo: But in the scheme of things, W(ho)TF cares? The girls were very young in the car, and couldn't believe how "cool" I was, esp. with 2 kiddos in the car. I said to the girl, "Did you do this on purpose?" Of course she didn't, so I told her I didn't see the point in getting all upset when it wasn't her intention to hit my car.
I also left her parents a message so hopefully she didn't get in too much trouble for busting up the car.
Anyways, I gotta get back to Dr. Landshark...:biggulp:

I slept while Scott ran. :( We have been going at a killer speed lately, though, and I haven't been sleeping well./ Plus, there's a wisher/one of my minnie girls in town with her family, so I know i'll be up late tonight. Will go for an 8-miler in the am.
Rozzie - So what Garmin did you get??????
Gail - How's teh XT with the grand kids going???

Nono - I am so glad that you are ok. You are an amazing person and perhaps some of what you just showed those girls will be something they can remember too. Handling life well is huge!
Ok - Once Carrie committed - so did I!!! I am on the hook for both the race and the plane ticket now - so no backing out!

Did someone steal my shopping cart????
Tried to register adn my shopping cart is not available. Now, who took my cart!
Hey, poking my head in to report that YES, I did get my new trail shoes in in a 1/2 size larger. Took them out for 3.5 this morning for a bit of everything I could find in a 3.5 mi loop: concrete, pavers, boardwalk, blacktop, soft sand, groomed sand, hard pack sand, grass. These shoes rock. While they are OK on the concrete and blacktop, they are amazing on the sand and grass. In the super-soft, windblown sand, I still sank and ran slow, but on the other surfaces it was like a whole new world. :)
For the record, I got the New Balance 790s. Oh, and there's now a New Balance 800, the first ChiRunning shoe. Not going to try that one until it gets under $100. :D
Glad everyone's lining up for the Porncess. Now let's figure out how we can wager on this little event.

LMAO -- I did that last summer on the boardwalk -- though around here, in the morning, that's not so unusual.
As for wagering, I was thinking more along the lines of whomever busts out their finish by the most...that type of thing...and maybe we could give that person a prize. Not like gambling so much, just something fun to reward the person who excels on that day. :yahoo:

I'm depressed. 3 weeks two days and I'm still a hobbling, infected, nerve damaged mess. NO exercise. Nada, Nothing, Zero, And to think I played tennis every day . And then there was snow on I-70 up at the tunnel this morning. Summer sure is short in the Summit. So I'm just a veggie blob and all my hopes of losing weight and getting back to me ole figga are gone. And my appeal attorney quit, no reason, no advance warning, nuttin. Sigh. Not sure why I posted here, but I like to read about all your running adventures and I guess it just finally got to me. So bad, that I'm drinking a lemondrop martini and I don't think I ever drink alone.
Oh, CB, part of being a runner (or any athlete) is having to deal with being benched sometimes. And, really, when you are benched, there's nothing better than a martini! :hug1:
I would hesitate to throw out all your plans though...it's just not on the timeline you thought it would be. Here's my question to ya: Did you get to be a "veggie blob" in a few weeks? Or was it a gradual process? I'm guessing it was gradual. So, given the fact you've had a serious accident, from which you have to heal, can you give yourself a break and let the healing come first and accept a gradual path back to where you want to be? Accepting and not pressing have been lessons I've struggled with for most of my life, so I'm certainly not preaching from on high. Just suggesting so you can find what's right for you.
Heck, I only ran 2 mi this morning instead of 7, as a super tight knee and nausea trumped Will Smith's admonitions ;). I am not unhappy. Tomorrow is another day and because of my decision today, I'll be out there tomorrow. (Unless I get run over by a bus today, but then I'll be exploring the next realm, so that'll be a whole new adventure!)

I vote that nono publishes a motivation book for all of us!
CB, when I was sidelined last month I was miserable. And it even wasn't anything like you are experiencing. But if it did teach me one thing, it was to really cherish (and take advantage) the days where I was healthy enough to exercise but didn't. I got really depressed, but somehow making new goals of when I did get back to it helped me. And it was hard to get on the bandwagon after it was over, but soon enough I was right back to where I was before the injury. So I ramble all of this to say is that you won't be sidelined forever, this is just temporary, you were very active before and that will help you heal. Nerve injuries take time, sometimes longer than we think, but you WILL get back. And better than ever! :)
Well I am about 4 hours late for my run, and it's already in the high 80s with humidity in the 400%'s so I better get crackin'.

Hi, its Lisa posting on my mom's username!! Yay for everyone signed up for the Princess! I tried to quote Carrie's revelation of buying plane tickets and my post never made it
Mom and I have ressies at Beach Club for March
Also, are any runners here planning a smaller meet for January like last time when we did Ghirardelli's in '08? Dizhoni and I are planning dining for Jan'09 :goodvibes:
Anyone have any suggestions on diet? I haven't posted here mainly because I've never been much of a runner, but have been running this year. I'm up to 8 miles. I range from 4-8 miles 5-6 days a week, although when school starts (teacher) it may be more like 4 days a week. I was on WW and not getting results. I'm reading up on different diets. I really only need to lose about 15 lbs. to get to my goal. Any suggestions? Oh, I might add, I am registered for the WDW marathon!

Jen, you say you are not much of a runner and you are up to 8 miles???? I am only up to 3.5, you are my new hero! Have fun posting here, hopefully someone can help you along with diets. I try to stay towards whole grain/whole wheat carbs when I have them, and it has helped me drop a dress size with running. I really don't diet anymore, I tried all of them and never could stick with them. Failed miserable. I admire anyone who can lose weight on those programs, it must take a lot of dedication.
Good luck with the Marathon in Jan! :)
Speaking on Marathon, is anyone watching the Olympic Marathon right now? Holy Double Craparooo, those chicks are FAST!

Thanks Roz and Nono...I'm actually getting a little feeling back today and the burning isn't bad at all....I know I'm whining but all my exercise habits center around using my legs. I guess I should so upper body and situps at least, but I've just felt near to giving up altogether. This taught me to get out there and USE IT when I get back to normal..no more lazy days.

I know!!!! When she entered the stadium I got such goosebumps! I can't imagine that pace for that long. We stayed up late to watch Phelps last night Live win his 8th, he is absolutely amazing. I think I am going to go through withdrawal when the Olympics are over, I am so addicted to watching him. :D
Well I still have 5 or 7 mi hanging over my head that have to get done by midnight tonight. I'm so cried out from last night after I got home from seeing my Dad. His buddy (and wife) were there and we all spent the afternoon there. My Dad is dying right before our eyes. It won't be long now.
I wish I could have taken a picture of the two of them yesterday for everyone here to see. Same age. One works out. Other ignored all the warnings his body gave him over a lifetime. Same age. One looks like images we used to see of Mother Teresa's work - skinny old person dying (not on the street, but otherwise, the same). Other one, healthy, sensient, vital. Same age.
And, my Dad's buddy has absorbed horrible stress over the last couple years, including his son dying at age 40, and has celiac disease. His wife battled breast cancer many years ago. So these aren't blessed people who never had setbacks.
I look at Phelps, and Torres and others and just LOVE seeing folks exceling so much. We can all excel in our own ways! We all are given the gift. What are you going to do with yours?
For me, I'm going to keep running and keep active, and set an example for the next generation. Walking softly on this earth for as long as I'm given.

Nono, your post really hit home for me. I have been lecturing my mom forever about staying active, even more so this week. Here her sister is dead, and drifted away right before our eyes from a unhealthy lifestyle and zero physical activity. I wish there was a way to beat it over her head, but it's like leading a horse to water to make them drink. Frustrating in the worst way. I know I ain't the best example, but this year a light has really gone off about the way to age slowly and gracefully is really to fight it. Fight it with physical activity, eating decent, and a general attitude that favors living life with a laugh and a smile.
I just wish nono I was there to give you a hug and to help you through all of this. :( It must be so difficult, I can't imagine, and trying to balance your mom's issues at the same time.
Also I am glad you mentioned Torres, I want her poster up in my room like a little kid. That woman, with what she has accomplished, really does show that age is just a number. I love it!!!!!!! :goodvibes:

Okay, I have to mail order Clif blocks/shots or something like it to help with my LR's coming up. I found this http://www.rei.com/product/729407 (the margarita one with sodium) that has a little extra sodium. I am nervous about sodium loss and hyponatremia--maybe I am a freak but I've read that women are at high risk with 1/2 marathons and taking the full time. I already output lots of salt, my dogs think I'm a salt lick after workouts.
Also, I was thinking of taking one about every 60 minutes. Sound reasonable?

Oh Nono, I'm so sad that you are losing your dad in such and agonizing way. He probably doesn't think about the regrets that you are feeling for him...I don't think his generation knew the link between exercising both mind and body so as to age well. We have no such excuse for us and our kids. But I feel that it is some terrible sad for you to realize that his last years could have been oh so much better and longer. Sending you big hugs.
I think kids who have active parents who don't let the kids slouch around watching tv and playing video games are so lucky. I remember how I 'adopted' a French exchange student who wasn't 'working out' in her assigned exchange home. The host mom was beside herself because of the video game that seemed to go everywhere with this kid. I was called as the host of last resort.:D Anyhow, it worked out well because my kid was so active that the French girl had to drop her little video game habit to keep up. Plus, I had rules and one of them was no video games while we were doing an activity. I think my kid ended up being so busy with athletics and dance in grade and high school that she did veg out in college. But now she is back to her old ways and works out in a variety of ways every day . I was extremely active until I hit my late 40's and then had too much chauffeuring duties to do my usual things. I admit that it is hard to get back into the flow; yet it is so important to do so. Which is why I keep reading the running thread ...for motivation and to cheer:cheerleader:.
Creepy trespasser was just tromping on my property with a shovel just outside my house. If he didn't carry a shovel I swear I would borrow a guard pit bull and let him have at it. This is getting ridiculous and I hope it ends soon.
