Hey Rob! Glad to hear things are getting better for you. Have a great trip, some of the best running is resort running. :goodvibes:

Lisa, I agree with nono, you have the solid base. Just take it easy and listen to your body. Have you done the Mercedes before? It's one I am thinking about in the future. I heard the full as Red Mt at mile 21? I hope you have a great time. If it were me, I'd probably pencil in 2 10 milers with several short easy recovery runs during the week. But go with what you feel comfortable with and you will do great! :)

Gail, whatever you would like to do concerning the Segway thing. I could go either way, so I'll let you decide. It looks fun for sure.

Rob - Glad things are going well! HAve a great trip!

Lisa - I would think you'll be ok. DOn't push too hard with your traning until then, though. have you done a run since you've been back? Feeling ok?

I did 30 min of swimming last night. I need a lot of work, but am glad I got back swimming again.

Hey -- thought -- bring all your race ideas to the Peacock meeting...something we can all discuss pre- and post-race!

Gail, there's a 5K at the Kennett event -- would be fun for you to do that one too, if you aren't feeling up to the 10K. Pretty low key event, with a nice post-race party.

I have the 5K at the end of April, so I'll see how I am for that one and decide then on the 5K or 10K.

How about we wait until we are down there and see what we feel like doing. Since you have to pay for it when you make ressies it will be better to wait.

COOL!

So, I just got in my 3rd pair of new running shoes...and they seem promising too. Mr Nono swears this order frenzy was in case he got laid off -- so I had gear for the year. There's a grain of truth to that.

I did 4 mi today just because it was so nice out -- took my new Adidas adiZeros out -- they are keepers too. So yeah, Lisa, I have to start running marathons to justify my 6 (possibly 7 if the new ones that came in today are keepers too) sets of running shoes!

Seriously, probably what made me think marathon now is that 4:00:xx on the McMillan calculator. Once I realized that's my qualification time for Boston in my age group that I become later this year, it changed everything for me. And, since I recovered my running consistency in 2008, it is time to build my base in 2009 for some attempts at qualifying for Boston in 2010.

Personally, I want to be running for the rest of my life, so consistent progression forward in the sport is what I'm after. I think there's a big difference between an 18 miler and a marathon, but also don't want to waste the 18 mile training if I happen to fare well though it...October will be a telling time for me. :scared07:

So agree with you nono, I always tell myself I only just begun. I want to run forever too. I might even join the 50 state Marathon club, who knows? ;)

Gail, sounds like a plan on the Segway. If it's meant to be there will be slots open for us. :)

Rozzie's going to be a Marathon Maniac I bet!!! (http://www.marathonmaniacs.com/)

So, I started packing my running bag for FL last night, as I got a satisfactory answer from the folks running the Princess. I'm in. So excited for tomorrow's 14 miler. I've never gone more than 13.1.

So glad you like the shirt. You can be one of hundreds or one of five Carrie. Which one is it going to be???!!! (nothing like a little East Coast "family" squeeze early in the day, eh?) :rotfl2:

In a nutshell, based upon my submission of my time last fall, I should be less likely to encounter a 12 mi. bottleneck in the race. I sure hope. Anyone hear how they are doing the start? Wave? Corral?

Oh, as for the shoes, remember, some I can only wear in winter. Some I can only wear in summer due to my feet changing size with the weather...so it's bad but not as bad as it sounds. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :rolleye11:

I'm trying to talk Joe into going and doing the 1 mile walk. It's not going to be an easy task. He keeps saying he knows he needs to get out and walk but he never does. Maybe if I can get my son, DIL and the kids to go he will come too.

nono...good luck tomorrow with all the wind on your run.

Ok...question on the Garmin....are they accurate or can they be off on your distance?

Rozzie
01-23-2009, 04:13 PM
Gail, Jon (my coach) swears the Garmin's are slightly inaccurate and I believe him. My RP and I have the same model Garmin and very rarely do we report the same distance or pace. I think it is that way especially when it is a cloudy day or a shaded area.

Well today is a great day, got my shirt in mail--too cute! I have a running skirt that is going to go great with it. Also a girl at work offered to cover my morning cases so I can go run without worrying of being interrupted. Yahoo, my karma must be all in line today. :)

Good luck nono on your run, and here's to Laura, Gail, Carrie and Lisa to have a great run/walking weekend! :thumbsup2:

I noticed that when I run through the neighborhood because of the houses and trees also. I did my 45 minutes today at the HS track again and it said that I had a 13:32 pace & 3.32 for my distance. I guess it's because it is out in the open and there isn't any interfince. I have the same one as you do and it does take a while on cloudy days to connect to the satelite. Hope it's not to far off!!

Maybe I'll take my pedometer with my also when I go out and see how they compare on the distance.

nono
01-24-2009, 08:23 AM
Garmins do their best approximation. So depending on how much you run an exact straight line and where the satellites are while you are out...you will get more or less accuracy. What cracks me up is people who moan about a certified race being long because their Garmin said X.

Well, given that it's an approximation like I said above, and then add to it the very unlikely event that the runner ran the exact path for 13.1 or whutever miles that the certifier rode...I'm always amazed how close my Garmin (201 version) is to the actual.

Anyway, I am back from my 14 miles. Whoo hoo. Support team rode by at mile 12 and I made them take Renee so I could run my last 2 in peace. She was being very funky out there, and having to use all my might a couple times to control her when she saw another dog wasn't making morning. Last mi or so I was tightening up a little , but my lungs felt great. Mr Nono, kids and Renee met me at the rendezvous corner with a cup of coffee. Not :biggulp:, but it'll do! :D I loved the run. It is basically miles 8-22 of the Ocean Drive marathon:
http://www.odmarathon.com/map.html

And yeah, Gail, it was somewhat windy -- maybe 20+ out on the causeway and bridges, but it wasn't bad. I think I'm just used to it anymore.

what does a pedometer do exactly? if it's what I'm thinking about. it measures how many steps you are taking, and have taken. am I correct? I have been wanting to buy one of those, does anyone have a suggestion on which one to buy.

Rozzie

Whooooooohoo Nono! Good job! :thumbsup2: My 12 is done. Met my RP at 0630, she had to do 14 so she started a little early. (her Half is coming up in 20 days) I was pleasantly surprised how little pain I had. I was expecting my piroformis/sciatica to give me problems, but that pigeon move has been excellent and only now and then I could feel some minor pain. The knees did start talking at 11, but they started talking at around mile 8 last week, so I'm slowly improving, right? My pace was 12:00ish, we took it slow. It rained off and on and the roads would get slick, especially on the downhills. I just can't believe I'm doing this type of mileage, it's always fun when it's a new longest distance. :)

I have to warn you nono, if you keep posting links to that Ocean City thing, I might just show up on your doorstep for it! :D

OH LOL on people complaining on their Garmin distances vs certified courses. My coach says he just wants to hit the roof when someone comes up to him (he is a RD of several local races) after a race to complain about how they either were shorted or vice versa. Like they want their money back based on a Garmin? :confused24: I love my Garmin and I know it isn't pinpoint accuracy, but I love the freedom it gives me to roam all around town.

So Gail how did your run go? Lisa, Carrie, Laura?

:yahoo::yahoo: nono & Roz.....glad you had good runs today.

nono you sure do give Renee a workout. Glad your ride showed up so you didn't have that long walk back.

Roz, glad you're sciatica & knees were better for you this week.

I only had to do 4 miles today and I did take my pedometer with me and the miles were exactly the same on the pedometer as my Garmin. I'm amazed that I did my 4 miles in 55 mins. Quite an improvement for me since I started. It was windy here also. Next weekend is 8 miles for me. I haven't had any problems with my knees (knock on wood) so far and my breathing was better today. Thinking that maybe that is because of the weather being cooler.

I wanted to know what exactly does the pedometer consist of? and what exactly is the difference between the pedometer and the garmins you speak of. Loved hearing about all your runs, ladies!! Now, 12 is done for you Rozzie, that is so awesome! :cheerleader: And nono, you have a new longest run - that is so great - you are on the way to that eighteen miler race!! :yahoo:

I have done two runs since the marathon and both were only about two miles. They were good though and my body seems pretty recovered now :goodvibes:

I did have to go to my MVP doc this past Thursday and it was time for my every other year treadmill stress test! Remember that last time I ended up with an abnormal result and in the end had an arteriogram as a result!!!! Well, this time, I beat my fitness score from age 46 by a pretty good amount. I surprised the girl doing my test. She kept waiting for me to call uncle before I finally told her I was ready to stop :w00t: I've already decided that when I go at age 50, I will beat my 48 year old score, lol! Anyway, the doc said all my tests were perfect and the pesky EKG was great this year :thumbsup2:

I got my shirt too and I was so excited! I ordered a medium and I am glad it fits, there wasn't a lot of extra room :rolleye11: I am part of a Princess running group at Sparkpeople also and they plan to have shirts made. I will likely get a shirt but I will definitely be wearing my Team Peacock shirt in the race :hyper:

Diz, I don't have a pedometer, so I can't comment.

Garmin has so many models it's hard to generalize. But, I'll tell you about my 201 model. I use it to track my elapsed time, distance run and pace. It has many more functions, but those are the three things I use it for everytime I put it on...biggest benefit is that I am not tied to a specific running route planned in advance.

How far are you running presently? If it is less than 10-12 miles per week, you probably don't need to worry about getting anything gadgets yet. Also, there will likely be price drops on them later this year, so waiting until you get your mileage up isn't a bad idea from that perspective either.

It's not because we have more time that we run more. We make the time.

I find the whole "I'm busier than you" excuse rude...Yeah, that's what I think when my alarm goes off at 5 a.m. so I can get my run in before anyone in my family wakes up -- "Good thing I'm not busy." When I see a friend slogging out a run at 10 p.m. having gotten home from his second job, that's what I think..."Good thing he's not busy." I have answered your questions thinking you were starting a running program. No, you were just wasting my time. :headbrickwall: I'm sorry Diz. well, Nono I didn't mean it that way, I do apologize for the misunderstanding. it's not like I am lazy or making excuses for my actions. I very much do value all of your help. I am trying to run more, A LOT more. I used to wake up at 5am mon-sat and run for about 1hr but now I am in the Fire Academy to be a Fire Fighter in which I have to run about 1-2hrs mandatory every day and I run mon, wed, fri during school and I dedicate myself to running tue, thu, sat I am really trying. I didn't want you to get mad at me like that. I really meant no harm. I do want to run A LOT more but I have no one to help or provide guidance for me around my area. I understand if you still don't want to help me, but again I do apologize to everyone that Understood me in the Lazy, making excuses kind of way. I am trying my best, and hope you can still give me advice or guidance now or in the future. I think that is what I understood by your post I am not totally sure but I really do apologize that it came out that way.

Diz,

I had a bad wake up this morning and a whole day of tight schedule looking at me...sorry I "bit" your head off. Please accept my apologies. I've had a few too many folks lately say things like, "Well, you are lucky -- you have the time..." which grates on my last nerve. That's what your post sounded like to me, but I would bet I was projecting some of those other conversations echoing in my head onto the tone of your post.

Anyway, what makes you a runner is not the number of miles you do in a week, just that you do what you can given your schedule. So, if realistically you can't do more, just flat out say, "I'm a runner and with my schedule, I do 7 miles a week." And please be proud of that. But, I really wouldn't buy a Garmin at this point if I were you. Do you know about
www.mapmyrun.com (http://www.mapmyrun.com) ? You can do a pretty good measurement of your route on that. I used it to plot my new course yesterday, and it was only a block off in calculating a 14 mile run. I think that's pretty for a free product, don't you?

OK, I have to go break up a brawl that's erupted in my house...will this day ever end???!!!

Rozzie

Diz, I think I see where nono is coming from. What I suggest is that you make running a priority if it's that important to you. For example I was supposed to go in for 2 hours today for work, and ended up working over 9. My old self would have said "I did enough labor today" and would go home and veg. My new self knows that the guilt I will feel for not running is more unbearable than just being tired. Make sense? I have gotten up at 0245 just to get miles in before work. I'm a little nuts though. ;) My best advice to you is make it a habit, a part of your life, to where you don't feel right if you don't run. Yes you will miss days--that is reality, but the key is being miserable when you miss them. Then you know it is a part of your life. I wish you the best of luck in your journey into running. BTW, I do agree with nono, I would hold on the Garmin until you are upping your mileage.

Not making excuses, but my husband and I have just been out for cocktails, and he thought Diz might want to know what a bad wake up is... (He's got your best interests at heart DIZ!). So, my son hasn't been sleeping for the last 3 nights. What does that mean? Every hour being waked by ear pirecing screams -- and he's inconsolable. So last night I slept with him and he slept from about 3:30 on...my reward? At 5:50 a.m. having my 2 yr old pile drive my face (I kid you not).

NO big deal until you realize that my husband and my 4 yr old D are in the room and I'm screaming bloody murder...and neither of them wake up! I told everyone today...if my husband's on Channel 40's news claiming he knows nothing while someone abducted me, he's not kidding!

Regardless, I got 3 mi in this morning. Slow, recovery miles. My two new books came in about running...One is about Periodization and Nutrition. The other, about Brain training. I'll read a bit then give you my 2 cents. (And the proper titles).

Hey Diz, even without training you are young enough to survive a Tower of Terror race! You in for this October???!!! :yahoo:

Diz, I believe the TOT 13K is Oct 24 this year. I did the race this past year and had a BLAST. It's a great race distance IMHO for starting to run long distances. There is a great after party in the parks till 2am for racers and their families. (read TSM no lines!)

Ohhhhhh guess what???? I got downstaffed today! I guess since I did 9 hours yesterday they didn't want to pay me overtime. Usually I would be bummed, but since I have track tonight I am welcoming the down time. The higher power already sent me a email which was titled "Playtime's Over". We had track off last week since he was in AZ doing the PF Chang--of which he did in 3:27:00, another BQ at the age of 50! However-- I am still wondering how 6 days of running and a 12 mile LR is "playtime'.  I may not be able to walk tomorrow. :blech:

ROZZIE HAVING A COACH.

There. I said it.

This doesn't mean I don't want to hear about what your coach has you doing or anything like that. I just wish I could say, "My coach has me doing..." ;) It just sounds so dern kewl!

You know he does training via email and phone, takes where you are and develops training schedules to achieve the next level. Did I mention his top runner broke a new course record at the local marathon? And his relay team shattered the old record by 8 minutes? Oh, and he believes any female with proper training can run a sub 3:10 marathon? He has trained several people to a BQ via email. ;)

Diz, your entry fee gets you into the after party. Your guests must buy a ticket, I think it was like $40 or something. Mr. Roz reports worth every dime to see me race and finish and ride all the rides he wanted. He's running it next year, it's seeing the race in person that gave him the desire to be not only a runner, but a racer. :thumbsup2:

Diz - DOing some catch up here. First of all. Welcome!! You got good advice on Garmins and it sounds liek mapmyrun will help you. If you can figure out whre ryour mile poitn sare, mapmyrun adn a watch are all you need. We got our Garmin when the distance started going way up adn I had not heard of mapmyrun. Pedometers are good, but you input how long your stride is adn it counts your steps. If your stride changes, than your mileage iwll be off. That's why we went for teh Garmin. Hope to see you at ToT!!!

NOno - WTG on teh 14-miler! That's awesome!

Rozzie- GLad your down time works out well for you today!

Gail - Woo hoo on teh pace! You rock!!!

Lisa - Woo ho on teh streds test and EKG!!! Glad your bodies feeiogn good post-race too!!!

OK, figured out I have a skirt tha tmatches the lettign of my peacock shirt exactly. I did a trial 6 miles yesterady and it worked well, so that will likely be my race gear.

Yes, 6 miles wen well. I hate peopel without track etiquette, butthat's life. Think I'm swimming and doing yoga-laties today. Yeah, I'll be dead come 7:40. :silly:

Thank you for the welcome! what exactly do you mean by how long my strides are? how would I calculate that?
I have also been worrying about my toes on my right foot they are kinda like bent. to me they look like they are an old persons toes. I have been to a foot doctor and he told me that I use my toes to balance myself tooooo much!!! can anyone give me some advice?

Is track etiguette like driving etiquette? like if your slow stay on the right side of the road and stuff like that.

Track ettiquette is more like common sense. Don't go 2-wide on a 2-lane strack, so people can get around you. DOn't stop and chat while on the track. DOn't look out the windows while stopped on teh track....

Diz - No advice on teh toes. SOrry. As for measuring your stride, you can either urn in teh sand and measure or run a meansured distance and count your steps. I don't know of any real tricks for it.

Look out folks, nono has her tape! I do have to ask, what do you mean by "if all goes well?" Like the train running off the tracks, weather, or something running related? :listen:

I had a great track workout tonight. We ran a 5K without being told what exactly what we were doing. Just 8 400's with recovery floats. We beat our 5K PR by over a minute! He did this to prove the point that racing is very much a mental game. Just run fast without thinking! Very creative indeed. :)

Lisa, I forgot to give you props on your excellent test results. Whoowee indeed, that must be a incredible feeling. :goodvibes:

A variety of injuries that we all seem to suffer from at one point or another. Actually, "injury" is probably too strong a word.

Anyway, check this link out to see what we can do with the tape -- crap some of this looks so cool I just want to run around with the tape on me anyway. Makes me think I'll look like a real road warrior.

HOLY CRAP Gail! They are some mighty snazzy shoes! Congratulations! :goodvibes:

Nike Shox -- Diz, I don't wear them, but I am more of a Nike Free/Nike Air Track star girl -- which for most people don't have enough cushioning. I am breaking in some Nike Air Pegasus, but I feel like it is too much shoe for me. It's a classic though, so maybe once I loosen the darn thing up, it'll be better.

All of the majors make some spectacular shoes...sometimes too spectacular, if you believe these folks: http://runningbarefoot.org/

Geepers, they treat their customers right! Now why can't Runningskirts.com and Skirtgoddess do the same thing? I know I have done my part to stimulate the economy by just those 2 websites.

My 6 miles easy yesterday were anything but "easy". It was 75 degrees, sticky, and I was tight as a flitter. Today is my off day, tomorrow is my threshold tempo run. He lowered our tempo (and easy/long pace too for that matter) pace, now it's a 8:55-9:15 pace for tempo. We have to hold that pace 15 minutes x 2, with 4 minute recovery in between. :wassat:

Rozzie, I have a fuel belt that I have two pouches on the side that carry everything you're speaking of. I had carmex, meds, cell phone, camera, lots of food (I carried shot blocks on one side and chopped up clif bars on the other side), a couple kleenex, id and cash for my massage. It is a good idea to have a support team though, especially if you want to hold on to something rather than throw it away on the course and if you carry some special drink that you can refill, etc.

Gail, you are one lucky girl!!! :D

So today is the first day I watched what I ate. I'm reading this book on Nutrition Periodization for Endurance Athletes:
Amazon.com: Nutrition Periodization for Endurance Athletes: Taking Traditional Sports Nutrition to the Next Level: Bob Seebohar: Books

I think I nailed his general requirements for my day. I didn't have a food scale (I do now, thank you Bed, Bath & Beyond) so I have to wait until tomorrow to see if I estimated my roast beef sandwich correctly at lunch. :confused24: I did have to sign up at sparkpeople to get some of the nutritional info I needed...that site is a little much for me. I think over time, I'll be OK with it.

I'm really digging this book. I'm only part way through and can already start to implement nutrition changes. That's really important as G*d knows when I'll actually get all the way through the book!

Ok ya'll they changed the race start time again. It's now starting at 7:00.

Time Change
Sleepy won’t be the only one having a difficult time arising race morning. The start time for the Half Marathon has been changed to 7 a.m. But without the Prince to awaken such a Princess from her deep slumber, you will have to beware of poison apples and also remember that time springs forward the night before the Half Marathon. So set your clocks forward one hour before getting your beauty sleep!

8 achy miles for me this afternoon in 13 degrees...with a sore hip. I just noticed it was tender last night and because my social life is such a whirl, (:rotfl2:) had no time to ice before I had to run again. Did ice it tonight. Also iced my back with digestive track dose of 2 vodka martinis well chilled. I had my massage therapy session today and she worked my back the whole time. Not running, just kid-related agony. It wasn't sweet agony. Just horrible, hair-raising :scared07: from muscles the average massage therapist doesn't even bother with. My parents just got back from WDW last night and were disappointed with the running by the AK resort (cash hotel room Wednesday night). They had been told there was a 5 mile jogging trail when they booked but no cast members knew anything about it while down there. Anyone ever find a good place to run right at that location?

Also, they liked the running at SSR (Studio Mon. & Tues nights) but the themeing was a little too sparse and not "Florida" enough for them. Next trip (next week- jelous!) they are staying at 4 nights at SSR again (dev. points) but plan to go running in the OKW area as they think it's landscaping might be more their style.

Anyone else have suggestions for more "Florida Like" (tropical and dense foliage) plants, besides maybe heading over to Poly? They've said for a long time that Wilderness Lodge (Hotel) is their favorite both inside and on the grounds...

I was thinking of going to the Spa. :D

Nono, pencil Scott and I in for Sea World in Oct. He went recently on business and keep saying how awesome it is, and I haven't been in a 100 years at least. It's something we keep saying we need to do sooner rather than later. (love how I invite ourselves?) Gail, would you like to do Discovery Cove in Oct? :listen: Nono, I bet the dolphins make great babysitters. :thumbsup2:

Carrie, sorry to hear about your grandparents. You and Scott are such good devoted people. Ya'll are the people my family refers to when they say to me "why can't you be like so-so's kids?" Hope you feel better soon too.

DisneyGeek-IMHO, the best running on property is BWV/BCV. Close second is SSR/OKW running/walking path to DTD that connects the two resorts. Gail gives 2 thumbs up for VWL, and I refuse to stay at AKL now that I have learned through various sources that there are no running paths.

DisneyGeek,

At AKV, you are relegated to the gym. I don't know if that will change after all the construction is done.

Diz,

The Spa at SSR is fine, but for me I find the atmosphere lacking. However, the gym is super!

Day off for me! Just some foam rolling, 20 min of yoga and my 10 min of stretching. I'm going to pick up my Mom and bring her down here for SuperBowl.

Been sitting here enjoying my time to myself by adding more races to my "races to run" list. Mr Nono is asking for me to work the Bay to Breakers race in San Francisco into the next couple years. I think we can work it in within the next two years. :)

Bay to Breakers sounds cool, nono! Will Mr. nono run it with you and how many miles/km?

Well, I finally got off my butt and signed up for the Mercedes Half last night. It takes place Feb 15 so I plan to do an 8-10 mile LR this weekend. I may leave in about an hour and go get it done. If not, it will be tomorrow afternoon...having trouble talking myself into running in the cold this morning :scared07: mind you 30-35 degree cold, nothing like most of you experience but then I am a wimpy Alabamian too! :rotfl2:

Mom and I have a studio at Beach Club and did not figure anyone would want to come by there to do a pickup. We are doing a one day car rental because I don't want Mom to schlep all over with me trying to get to the expo - don't want to wear her out on the first day. I'm a bit nervous about driving myself to Epcot on race day. I know its probably easy but I have never driven myself to any of the parks

nono, I think you are going to enjoy this race a lot more now that you will be out front with the other fast girls :yahoo: I hope your hip is better!

Carrie, I hope things get better with your grands :goodvibes:

Well I did it! Warning Peacocking Ahead: I did my first UNOFFICIAL half this morning. 13.1, and did 2 minutes under my goal time for the Porncess. (2:30) So now I know I can do it. I am glad I went the distance as I learned that I need to fuel more during the run. I got the "weakness" again when I got done. (not during) Then I realized I only had 2 sharkies when I was running and 2 flasks of water. So I might experiment next LR with some frozen Hershey Kisses or some Fudge (;)) with my usual clif blocks or sharkies and see if that gives my body the extra sugar boost it needs. This is all about learning what our body likes, right?

WTG Lisa on the Half registeration! I can't wait to hear all about that race, it is one that I would like to do for sure. :)

Wow, Rozzie, that is an awesome time - I bet that is fast enough to run with Carrie :yahoo: Are sharkies the size of clif blocks? If that is true then you ate almost nothing :wassat: Now, I'm all about chocolate though  Except on the full they handed out chocolate at HS and I have to admit that it was a little hard to enjoy at that point in the race...

Well, I am excited about my run today too! I did ten miles at a 13:40 pace and it was ultra consistent in that I was virtually dead on that pace for each and every mile :yahoo: Now, is that good enough to keep up with you, Gail, I hope!? I am planning to let you dictate our pace at the race and just try to conform to what you are doing :thumbsup2:

Right, girlie, EAT MORE! I burned 967 calories doing my ten miler today so how many cals do you think you burned doing a Half at that much faster pace than me? I hope you've had some quality food by now cuz ya gotta have fuel for that bod :eating:

AH! My breakfast at the little cafe we eat after every run consisted of 2 scrambled eggs with cheese, cheese grits, sausage patty, raisin toast with strawberry preserves, fruit, and a 20 oz glass of Chocolate Milk. I think I covered what I burned and then some LOL! :D

I really didn't mean to peacock on my time, I just really wanted to see if I could do it. I think I might have a 50% chance of doing it for the Porncess, with the bottlenecking, traffic, bus fumes, etc etc. The only reason I went for the time today was my coach challenged me to try for it.

And Pleeeze Gail, you are doing so awesome, I think out of all of us, I am most proud of you. And I mean that. :goodvibes: You have such a nice steady pace, I can see you smoking by me in a whirlwind.

Nono, how motivating would that be to have Tarzan reeling us in? Gosh we could PR. :D

On a serious note, what is neat about Team Peacock and we have all had our own challenges we have overcome to make it this far. Gosh, I am kinda getting choked up thinking about how far all of us have come. :thumbsup2:

So in figuring out my race plan, here's what sucks: 8 min. miles. To make a day of it, I am thinking I'm going to have to suck up the fact that it'll be a very uneven paced race. So, for a few miles, I have to expect 9-10-11 min miles. To make up for those, I need to hit 8 of the 13.1 miles at a 8 min/mi pace.

Not always possible. Any given Sunday right?

Did my 8 miles today but not in shorts. Had on what I normally wear for the cold and I was very warm except for my feet. Part of the track was still covered with ice and snow so my shoes got soaked when it started to melt. I was going to go more than 8 but my toes were just tooooo cold. But even with the slow down spots from the crap on the track I had a 13:50 pace. Felt good except for the freezing toes.

So, how many miles, Rozzie? We need you to peacock around some more:grin:

Sometimes, I have to wait a bit for the bigger meal so I don't know. I can certainly eat plenty when I get my full appetite back. When I finish, I always get some fruit - it sounds good to me when other things don't. Have to be honest though, the fare after the full marathon was pitiful, except for the fruit. They had these sickly sweet little banana bread muffins (can I say, nutritionally worthless too). I tried them in 2008 after the Half and threw it away after a bite or two because it was sticking on the way down and was way too sweet! I hope they treat princesses a bit better - crossing fingers and toes!!!!! :eating: I will go back to the room for a shower pretty quick! nono it was 51F here but I want to get used to the warmer weather so I decided to sweat it out. (some little birdie told me to try it)

Lisa...I did some running, more in the beginning because of the slow spots from the snow & ice. After it started to melt and my feet got soaked I didn't do a lot of running.

Roz....post race I do what ever ya'll decide to do. Actually we have to do what nono says cause she's the driver.

Lisa, the TOT had those nasty muffins too. Way too sweet and made me sick. I've heard that the offerings at the bigger races are pathetic. WTH? I have to have hot carbs and protein fast or I sink like a ship taking on water. I don't know why I am that way, but something like Pizza is like nectar from the god's. Fruit? No thanks. (except during the run then fruit is great :confused24:) I'm thinking my options are pretty dern limited. I might get Scott to bring me a sack lunch (like turkey wrap from Publix) so I can at least function till' I eat my big refueling meal.

Oh, miles for Jan was 134. :silly: I guess Jan is a long month...but it is still baffling to me to think I ran that much.

Okay, I really just meant to post to nono that I put in the request information verbatim that she requested. So I say we got like a 25% of getting the same area? ;) I plan on trying to be there early, hopefully by 830am to checkin.

I did have a beer after I came home. :biggulp: Is that better?

I don't remember any food post-race previously at the other Disney half, but we were desparate to get to the kids races which were held then over at WWoS. I'm planning on wandering into Epcot. LOL, I spied on you earlier. I figured that had to be you running along the "crest". :) I am all up for post race celebration. I plan to bring baby wipes and a shirt to change into and make a couple hours out of it. I haven't had a drop of alcohol in almost 2 months, and plan to be dry until race day. I am looking forward to falling head first off the wagon. :biggulp:

Gail, thanks for the clarification. I remember you saying that now, but I had a little freak out moment thinking of the 3 of us having to stay the remaining nights in the Villages. :silly:

Oh and nono, my coach believes the same thing on fueling (for himself). He had 1 gel, and 2 peppermints in his last Full. At home he tries to go as long as possible on fueling to train his body to be tough. Then race day he moves back the wall with peppermints. Oh and he does like that guy you mentioned. I figured he would.

I think fueling needs can change over time, too. I needed more clif shots in the past than I do now.

For this half, I'm planning on bringing 2 bottles of coconut water (the Goya brand, 'cause they have itty bitty bits of coconut flesh in them) and just a clif shot or two (for caffeine).

Also, I'm planning on eating and having a cup of coffee race morning, which I did not do last time, as I usually run before I eat. The difference is that I realize I normally don't wait 4 hrs until I run...before I eat.

What time do you guys think the car should leave OKW?

Right now my plan is this. My usual oatmeal and FF milk and some coffee upon waking. Pack a PB and Honey bread pocket in baggie/or Cliff Bar for the wait. Bring a bottled water to sip while we wait. For the race, as of now, I am bringing 1 bag of Strawberry Clif Shot Bloks. 3 at mile 5, 3 at mile 10. Water at the stops, but still have my bottles on me for security. As for what time to leave OKW, I have no idea. :confused24:

Sounds good. First thought is that we leave around 4:30? We wouldn't be parked and out of the car before 5 a.m. with the way they run things. And, they would corral us probably by 6:30 so that's not all that much waiting around time.

Oh geeze. I'm sorry that it'll be such a wake up call for you. I don't mean to be all anal about the :driver: I've just heard nightmare stories of folks getting snarled in traffic, and I don't want that happening to us. Since we don't seem to get a clear picture of registration, etc., I figure we can chill out at the car if it is cold, or outside if it is warm.

I'll have a sheet with me that we can lay down and leave. It's just a sheet, so it's not like a magic numbe bed or anything, but it did the trick last time.

Post-race food. ToT had cookies adn such after it. I remember that being one of the better ones. Marathon tends to have bagels adn muffins and bananas and oranges. I am fuzzy on it, as I can't eat solid food for a while after I run.

As fro gettign food in Epcot, I'd rather go back and shower and then get real food, but I can be flexible.

nono - Didn't mean to ignore you. Laura and I will be at AS, so we can bus it from there. Plus, it's out of your way. thansk for teh offer, though!

OMG Nono, you are not anal whatsoever! If I were alone and going to the race by myself, I'd probably be there by 3am. You have to remember I am used to getting up at 430 everyday for work. It is not a problem at all, actually I probably won't sleep at all. I just appreciate you driving, and feel better about us leaving early---I am a paranoid freak about traffic. Can you imagine all this work and preparation and miss the race!? Now I would go postal for sure. :silly:

OK, I decided to add two things to my list.

First is the Rehoboth Beach Marathon in November. Here's the link:

http://www.rbmarathon.com/

(:rotfl2:)

And, then I've decided in addition to the Shamrock in March of 2010, I'm going to go for the Ocean Drive Marathon in March of 2010, as my attempt to qualify for Marathon Maniac status.

Also, I think I'm going to set a "coastal" goal of 10 Coast Marathons for myself. If I get through those 3, I'll be on my way! I will have the Huntington Beach Surf City Marathon as part of those 10. Here's that one, near Disneyland:

All of this is subject to change as I ramp my mileage and see how I feel. :)

Actually, they are back-to-back Sundays. :D

Well, all of this may fall apart depending upon how the family support goes. Mr Nono has committed, and we're both interested to see how my base-building goes. It may not go well, and I'm willing to scale back if that's the case.

Yeah, the "Mom" mileage issue is still in play. This will be my experiment to figure out if there's a sweet spot where I can train with a reasonable amount of miles and comfortably run marathons. It'll be fun to find out!

See what I mean? Missed marketing opportunity. Maybe it's in the works.

Gail, I heard that 3 day walk commercial yesterday. There was a really odd piece of copy in it -- can't remember it exactly, but it was something like, "This is your way to take a stand against breast cancer." It was so odd that I was shaking my head wondering two things:

1. Is breast cancer really like the neighborhood bully, and you can show it who is boss via a show of force?
2. Who really takes a stand for breast cancer?

Again it was just an odd piece of copy, but really made me :confused24: for several miles of my drive. So, no I wasn't thinking about what three, 20 mile days would be like. Now I am. :)

Gail - Not sure that I'll ever get to teh 3-day walk. It's $$$$$$ (over $1000 IIRC) and doesn't sound like great accomodations. Still a good cause and an adventure. I bet you're in good enough shape now if you didn't try to do it at race pace.

Not that I'm planning on doing this now but here is some info on the Breast Cancer 3-day walk.

Single walker registration fee is $90.00 but you must raise a minimum donations of $2,300.00.

About the Event
1. What is the Breast Cancer 3-Day?
Thousands of women and men come together, each raising money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. Then they take their commitment to end breast cancer one step further and walk 60 miles over the course of three days.
Eighty-five percent of the net proceeds of this event go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Every advancement in breast cancer research, treatment, education and prevention in the last 25 years has been touched by a Komen for the Cure grant.
The remaining fifteen percent of net funds goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund to provide a permanent endowment for ongoing support of breast cancer initiatives.
2. Before You Register: The Important Things to Know

In order to register for the Breast Cancer 3-Day as a walker, you must be 16 years old by the end of this year (2009). Minors 16 and 17 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also registered for the event (no more than 2 minors per adult).
All walkers must agree to raise a minimum of $2,300 for the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, in order to walk. If you haven’t raised the minimum requirement by the time you check in for the event, you can make a donation to your own fundraising account, put up a credit card to insure the balance and allow yourself four weeks after the event to continue to fundraise, or you can choose not to participate in the event.
Each walker (whether you are on a team or not) is responsible for her or his own fundraising commitment in order to participate.
The registration fee and all donations are non-refundable and non-transferable.
All participants must have medical insurance at the time of the event in order to participate. If you do not currently have insurance, click here for information on how to obtain temporary insurance. (http://www.the3day.org/site/PageServer?pagename=OCI_Insurance)
3. How do I register for the Breast Cancer 3-Day?
Go to the Register page (http://www.the3day.org/site/PageServer?pagename=register), select your Breast Cancer 3-Day location and complete the form. You will be guided through the registration process. Once your transaction is complete, you will receive a confirmation email receipt. If you don't wish to register online, call 800.996.3DAY and we will be happy to take your registration over the phone.
4. How far do we walk?
The Breast Cancer 3-Day route covers approximately 15-22 miles each day for three days in a row, totaling approximately 60 miles.
5. What if I can’t walk that far?
If you are unable to continue walking while out on the route, one of our support vehicles will transport you to the next pit stop, or ahead to camp, where you can rest and get medical attention if you need it. Your safety is always our first concern.
6. Where do we spend the night?
After a long day's journey, you’ll spend the evening at the Breast Cancer 3-Day camp with your fellow walkers and crew members. We provide you with with a 2-person sleeping tent to share.
Camp will consist of many different areas, including dining tents, where you will eat dinner and breakfast, and shower and sink trucks for washing up. There will be a “3-Day Café” for relaxation and socialization, a stage for nightly announcements and entertainment and much more.
Part of what makes the Breast Cancer 3-Day such a memorable experience is the unique community that is formed at camp. For security concerns and because of parking and space limitations, our camp is not designed to accommodate family and friends. We ask that you adhere to a “no visitors in camp” rule. If you have a special reason for needing to meet someone while at the Breast Cancer 3-Day campsite, please contact us for more information.
7. Is there a minimum age requirement to register for the Breast Cancer 3-Day?
Walkers must be at least 16 years of age by the end of this year (2009) in order to participate. Minors 16 and 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult who is also registered for the event (no more than 2 minors per adult). Crew members must be at least 18 years of age by the date of the event in order to participate.
Volunteers must be at least 10 years old in order to volunteer for the Breast Cancer 3-Day. Minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult while volunteering on the event (no more than 5 minors per adult for ages 10-16, 10 minors per adult for ages 16-18).
8. Is there an insurance requirement to register for the Breast Cancer 3-Day?
Yes. All registered walkers and crew members must have personal health insurance during the time that the event takes place in order to participate. Though the Breast Cancer 3-Day provides emergency medical services without charge, personal health insurance is needed to cover the cost of any medical care received away from the event. For example: if emergency room or ambulance transport is necessary, insurance coverage may apply. Check with your insurance company for the terms of your individual policy. If you do not currently have insurance, click here for information on how to obtain temporary insurance. (http://www.the3day.org/site/PageServer?pagename=OCI_Insurance)
9. Do I need permission from my doctor in order to participate?
Walkers and crew members of the Breast Cancer 3-Day who have significant medical history (or are pregnant) are asked to discuss their participation with their personal physician and get a letter of authorization in order to participate. For walkers and crew who are pregnant, this letter must be provided by their obstetrician. The Medical History Form that all participants will be required to fill out during the online check-in process specifies what significant medical histories require this note.
10. Do I have to carry all my gear while I am walking?
No. The Breast Cancer 3-Day Crew will transport your gear and tent for you to camp. You’ll just need to pick it up from the gear truck when you arrive at camp after walking. If the weather forecast is favorable, on Saturday morning, you can leave your gear in your tent, since you’ll be returning to your home away from home that night. As the sun comes up on the third day, you can re-pack your bag, fold up your tent, load it on the gear truck and begin the final day. The crew will transport your gear to the Closing Ceremony location for you while you’re walking.
11. I live outside the United States. Can I participate in the event?
Yes. You do not need to live inside the U.S. to participate in the Breast Cancer 3-Day.
12. Where can I find information about the financial results of the Breast Cancer 3-Day Series?
Each year, after all of the financial results of an event series are audited, a report card is issued. Click here to download a copy of the 2007 Breast Cancer 3-Day Report Card: Our Commitment to Action & Return to Charity Information. (http://www.the3day.org/site/DocServer/3-Day_Report_Card_11_07.pdf?docID=341)

Yes, that would be great! I'd be willing to hire him long distance, except I think I'd just frustrate the hell out of him, due to my ever changing schedule, etc. However, I did get my newest running book in today which promises that I can learn the "secrets of adaptive running" and "how to be your own best coach." So, there's hope if Brad Hudson is right! :D

I did get my 3 miler in at dusk today on the sand with Renee in the snow. AND, a girl I knew from high school (and possibly grade school -- the details are fuzzy!) friended me on Facebook -- I could tell just by her photo she's a marathoner. I thought it was a sign since I fessed up here today!

Welcome to our newest Peacock! So glad you joined us Laura. :goodvibes: The only rule is that you must report every success you have, big or small. :) After all, we are PEACOCKS!

Well, here I go again. I'm getting up at 0300 to get my miles in before work. My RP is having to have a medical procedure and won't be able to run after work. I'm on call so actually I am happy to get it done in the morning time, that way I know I don't have the risk being interrupted with a case. Especially since it's a tempo run. Oh but the best part about tomorrow it's going to be 21! Yikesaroo!

Anyway, I spent $100 at Academy on the way home. But I got some loot. Finally found sportbeans and the cliff shots and bloks. Bought a few of each, no more having to order from Amazon for my fuel! Bought a GU too and going to do some experimenting on my last few LR's. Swapped running for yoga and other loosening exercises as I couldn't face 5 F wind chill. Good thing I just bagged it -- we got down to 0 windchill this afternoon. BRRRRR! I can't take it anymore!

BUT, YAHOO! :yahoo: My Suzanne Somers Thighmaster came in. I know, you are all probablly :rotfl2: right now, but wait! This is to help cure my Runner's Knee. My inside quad muscle (forget what it is right now) is not very strong, which is helping my knee mistrack. My massage therapist figured it was worth a shot! And, if my legs look better, well there's a bonus!

Tonight is officially "I Shot Six Holes in My Freezer" night. Where I drink and dance around for hours and pass out and wake up tomorrow in a much better mood. :D Now if my dance partner (the adult-sized one) would just finish work....

I know what you mean about the cold nono. I'm soooooo ready for it to go away now.

I went to Curves today. The one that I go to just had the machines hooked up with the new Smart system. You get a personal programed key that you put into the unit on the machine and it records your workout and lets you see if you are working as hard as you should. When you are done your 3 times around the circuit you put it in the computer and it shows you what you did and what you need to work on. It really makes you get back to what you should be doing on the machines. I now have my own personal trainer at Curves but without the yelling.

Hey that is awesome! Feedback is so gosh darn important when we're doing this. BTW, I have to really recommend the nutrition book I'm reading...

Amazon.com: Nutrition Periodization for Endurance Athletes: Taking Traditional Sports Nutrition to the Next Level: Bob Seebohar: Books

It has really helped me balance my intake and I feel good (well other than the weather). But I certainly have enough energy and feel I have a map as to how much I should be eating...

Nono, does the knee seem to be getting better, or about the same? Lots of pain when you run? :listen:

Gail, that training machine card sounds awesome. Weight training is a big weakness of mine, I would love to have access to something like that.

My run went well, though my fingers at the end felt like knives going through them. Weird, I had gloves on too. Luckily it does not get that cold too often. I guess the wind chill was in the 10's? I don't see how you Northern runners do it up there! :silly:

No. Just a gentle ache, mostly when I do other things, esp. lots of stairs. I've been doing some basic exercises from Merck (!):
http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec05/ch075/ch075f.html

And I swear they've kept me on the road. So, I haven't been taping, but probably should. But, I didn't want me to get lazy and just rely on it, so I'm using tape as my back-up as my mileage goes from 30-40 mpw.

Ahhh, 7 frozen miles this morning! But, temps are scheduled to go up up up this weekend! :yahoo: It was 17 F this morning, but no wind, so overall, not impossible. Honestly, if a breath of air had kicked up, I'd have turned around so fast and quit. I am in full-swing of my February blues. Punctuated by the kids mistakenly setting Mr Nono's alarm last night, so at 4:45 the clock went off. Exactly 1 hr. before my alarm should have gone off. :boohoohoo: But hey, it's practice for next month right?

I'm getting my aerodynamic haircut today...gotta do what I can to shave the seconds off my time. (kidding!) But seriously, with more miles and sometimes having to jam them in with other things pending on my schedule, the hair has to go!

Well I'm not exactly at the "running" stage yet- I'm still in "brisk walking" phase!

But I have NEVER been interested in wherever I am staying if they have a fitness center or not- Until now- :) So hoping to get on the treadmill while I am in Florida. EVERYTHING we are going to be doing is within walking distance of the Hotel so will be giving the sneakers a good workout!

At first I didn't think I was ever going to get moving any faster but here I am under the pace needed and totally amazed that I actually did 8 miles last Sunday and felt really good when I was done. Well, I need to drop 10 lbs., and the holidays sure didn't help me out any there. So, Mr Nono has ponied up a shopping spree if I can lose 10 lbs. in the spring. Summer clothes! Have a great run tomorrow nono.

Oh nono....the only reason that I got 3 Bonita's is because none of them were over $14.00. Actually one of them was only $6.99. Plus free shipping and the free shipping is for the whole month. Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge

Rozzie
02-06-2009, 06:36 PM
Yep, my 3 Bonita's were less than one skirt from SkirtGoddess. Free shipping too. Winky wink. ;)

Well, my LR is up in the air for tomorrow. My RP had to have a colonoscopy today, and wants to wait and see if she feels up to double digits tomorrow. We may delay it to Sunday. Usually she can run the day after her colonoscopy's---she has to have one every year because of her Crohn's. Sadly enough she has developed runner's colitis now, and may have to scale back her miles and do some adjustments. Anyway I say all this to ask if anyone has ever known anyone who had runner's colitis? Think I might do some research tonight online.

Oh I almost forgot, scheduled for 13 miles, I'll get in sometime before Monday. :)

Hope everyone is getting their runs/brisk walks in... :yahoo:

I did my 11 miles today. Felt fine -- glad I didn't have to go more. Could have, but glad I didn't have to do so. Probably not the best idea to fartlek during my 7 miler yesterday  but hey it all worked out!

I really like my long runs and think they add a lot to my running via mental fortitude. Today I didn't even look at my watch for until I was 1:28:00 into the run. Of course, after having to run up the three bridges (and I mean RUN since there's no pedestrian area), I couldn't see straight for awhile. :rotfl2: Seriously, my only hills, and I have to do them at my fastest pace just to avoid causing an accident. Good training though.

Today, since I was going 11, I did bring 1 coconut water, but I skipped all the other stuff like a clif shot or fudge (Renee ate the whole pound last week so I'm out). Even with the warmer weather, I didn't need anything else.

Now if the kids would just go take a nap so I can get into the hot tub....:hottub:

Did 13.1 this morning. Thing my time was 2:28:09, a few seconds slower than last week but there was quite a bit of hill work in there. I did some 1/2 Gatorade 1/2 water in my fuel belt and took 3 cliff blocks and felt a lot better afterward. (no low sugar weakness) Only slight knee pain at the end. Sat down to my big hearty breakfast, got back up to a nagging calf pain. Almost feels like a strain. I have tomorrow off, I rolled it and will ice it, not too worried about it.

Oh, wore my complete race outfit and everything felt good. The Peacock shirt did perfect. :thumbsup2:

Last night, I pretended I still drink regularly, and it really, really messed up my system. My whole body is wracked with pain, and I am going to attempt to eat now -- first time that didn't work out.

Wine has not been my friend since I started running. It's now on the mortal enemy list.

Oh yeah. You don't want to do that, 'cause we'll take pictures...

Look, just get all the crappy runs out of the way now, everyone. OK??!! OK! :cheerleader:

BTW, Rozzie, who said recovery runs were supposed to be hard? :listen: I thought recovery meant easy? Am I affused?

Instead of days "off" we have recovery runs at a slower pace. I actually feel better when they are over with, much looser than when I started. They are just miserable sometimes. My coach always says not to worry if you feel like crap on your recovery runs, as that just means you worked "appropriately" on the day before. Wed's are a complete day off from running, as he believes the body responds to running hard in 48 hour cycles. Now if you were injured (or pain that is not relieved with ice, Ibuprofen, vit C, and rolling with a foam roller you may get out of a recovery run) I do have to say he has made a believer out of me, I would not have ever believed I could run 6 days a week. But somehow I am! :)

Oh BTW, I would not worry another minute about the porncess, you body has done this hundred's of times, you got this in the bag Carrie! :thumbsup2:

Ah, gotcha Rozzie. Well, he's probably right -- I don't really work myself full out ever, so my recoveries always feel GREAT! :oweye: See, he'd hate to coach me. I always leave something in the tank.

I always find my recovery run the day after my long run the best of the week! Though I have a hard time hitting my target "recovery" pace (I'm using McMillan's paces based upon my last half, which predicted my recent simulated 5K to within 4 sec).

Haven't run yet today. I have 3 to do, so I'm going to do them during Renee's "walk." It's speedwork, which will make her very happy! (10 min mi warm up, then two 8 min miles).

Confession time -- I am a cakeaholic. Seriously. I understood intellectually alcoholism, but never "knew" the desire. These birthday cakes we get here are AWESOME, and I literally can't stop eating them until they are done. Strap on the feedbag, I still have half of a 1/4 sheet cake left!!! I seriously have to not have these in the house, as I can not control myself. :blech:

nono - I am not really a cake person, so I'll have to tryto saty away from teh ones yuo have their. I don't need another addiciton. ;)

ROzzie? 6Days/week? :love30:

I took lsat night off. I discussed with dh a bit and if I did drills, those are even harder on my legs. The weay I felt in teh am, I would have told anyone else to listen to their body and igve it a break. FOr once, I took my own advice.

LIsa - How's your dad?

Gail - ALl ok in the workout world?

I have only with a tremendous amount of discipline, so far, avoided the cake today. I'm not a sweets person period, so this whole thing is really :confused24:. But I am almost completely powerless against it.

Did 1.5 of my 3 last night. Everything was wrong, esp. that there was traffic at 8:30 pm and the winds were UP! I felt scared running the streets because I couldn't hear traffic -- remember I'm crossing a block every 0.05 mi...so even with running against traffic, there's so many turning situations.

Anyway, went out and did the remaining 1.5 this morning. My hip is all achy. Was last night too. Got some trigger points I'm working on...

Going to make the pilgramage to my dentist with the kids :scared07: today. Hoping to talk him into running the OD 10 Miler with me...
