Enjoy a nice recovery and taper Roz!

He he--just got done with one race and signing up for runner tracking on the next. W&D tracking available: http://www.xacte.com/templates/disney/winedine/

It's amazing, but by the end of the day on Saturday, the edge of feeling I was going to die during the race was smoothing out and I'm already getting the stupid idea I can run faster and farther in the next  Crazy I tell you; I hope the lack of glucose and oxygen to my brain during almost 6 hours doesn't have any permenant effects.

16 on the TM didn't happen. Less did, but my family was losing its collective mind and wanted some attention from me. On my 3rd set, I just couldn't move.

Going to try for it again on Wednesday. I am trying to watch a movie while running on it, and it's going OK, but I'm not engaged enough...maybe later I will be. If not, maybe I should just watch My Cousin Vinny.

Well whatever you do, I would warn against doing a 20 miler in under 3 hours. This whole running gig is a lot of trial and error, and uh, I think I did a major error!

Oh well, live and learn. If I am out for the race that opens up my schedule for more quality drinking time. :biggulp:

You have 3 weeks to heal. You will be fine......no excuses just so you can have more :biggulp: time either. You'll have plenty of time for that.

Didn't get my 10 miler done over the weekend....had the g-kids. Figure I will do it this weekend.

In all seriousness, I am a bit worried. It definitely feels muscular (which last time meant three weeks with no running and all cross training). That would give me a week to run before AC. Since I had a half 4 weeks prior I'm not sure how my fitness would be to do a whole half, or if I should drop to the 10k :( I will discuss all of these things with the doctor--she's really good about considering races in recovery plans.

Well I've decided I'm not tapering, just doing a 1 week fall off the cliff. I am once again (for about the 15th place on my toes -- I"m seriously running out of places) getting all blistered up. This has never happened before, and I've been battling it all summer. It's one of the reasons I've been doing so much barefoot sand running...

If this isn't going to be a serious race, we should think about what to do the day before -- food & wine and such. If we suddenly get all serious, then we can do food & beer. :p

Enjoy a nice recovery and taper Roz!

.

I am! I dragged my leg behind me like a monster all day at work. Bruising, swelling, the whole 9 yards. Then I had a 60 min intense myofascial massage on the area, plus 30 minutes of my sport doc digging into my tendon, bone, muscle, fat, anything he could find. He said all he felt was garbage. (term for serious old scar tissue) I lost count on how much profanity I used. Mama Mia!!!! I couldn't end the day this way.

So I headed up to the restaurant and sat outside at my favorite table. Nice fall breeze. Lance Armstrong bio in hand. Oh, a server made a mistake and opened up my favorite $65 dollar bottle of wine that we do not sell by the glass? I'll take a glass and happily drink the error. Mr Roz cooked up my new favorite (chicken with kale, butternut squash and pancetta) and I sipped and dog/people watched on the street. Then I came home to a nice luxurious looong epsom salt soak. Nice cab and Lance Armstrong bio in hand. (is he human?) Icing now.

Gotta love my sport Doc. He said active recovery for 2 days, then back to the roads. Tib/Fib overuse/inflammation with some tendonitis for fun. He prescribed yoga and more yoga for 2 days. We shall see. It is liberating not to be freaking out about the race. :thumbsup2:

I have never done a marathon with a hangover before. This could be a new experience for my journal. :scratchchin:

3 weeks? Wowser.

Have you considered massage and ART? (active release technique). I don't know what you have but maybe 3 weeks is a little long? That is almost the length of stress fracture recoveries. Just trying to help you not freak out. I guess the most important thing is to not run with pain. Take a few days then test. Pain? Back to bike. No pain? Then mabye some light easy mileage is okay.

Hang in there! What will be will be. Maybe we will be like the Night of the walking wounded arriving.

Now, now, now....

A couple glasses of wine early in the night is what I was thinking. We can have happy hour early and a dry dinner. Or not. Whatever will get folks to the finish line. We could even have our own beer stop set up along the course... You know, to keep the pain away!

Hate to hear so many are hurting, but I do like the various treatment plans ;).

Let's see - 2 on Saturday, 3 on Sunday, 2 tonight - 7 total. That leaves me 5 for Tuesday - Friday. Should be doable. Trying to VERY slowly up the pace - but not stressing about it. I don't have to tell you all how much better I feel physically & mentally.

Haven't taken anything for pain or inflammation for nearly a week :).

Okay I am feeling no pain. LMAO about my appt with my sport doc today. (BTW who is still major athlete, granted he's moved on to cycling and short distance)

Dr.J: It's swollen with bruising. It is full of garbage. What mileage did you do on your LR this weekend?
Me: 20.
Dr.J: Classic overuse.
Me: Overuse of what?
Dr.J: I can barely touch it. (HOLD STILL!)
Me: Like overuse of of a gait disturbance? My form?
Dr. J: No like OVERUSE.
Me: It didn't hurt until I sobered up this morning.
Dr.J: Classic. (rolls eyes and chuckles)
Me: Classic what? What did I overuse?
Dr.J: Repeat after me. 20 miles.
Me: So do I have tomorrow off?

As I leave he is laughing to his next patient and mumbles... "Long distance runners--- golden job security"....

 ;)

You know me too well! I woke up at 0320. (normal wakeup time) Luckily I managed to fall back asleep until alarm.

I am cautiously optimistic today. Swelling is down and I have no limp, almost no pain. But it's still tender and feels weak. Just finished up some light yoga and will do some more tonight. Icing now, preparing for the day.

It seems I missed quite the party last night ;)

John I'm glad you're feeling alright, and Roz, you'll be okay. Thanks for your encouraging words on my foot. It's just for my own peace of mind that I'll go to the doctor. My doc is good, she NEVER recommends straight time off, always active recovery. She gets it.

In other news, a blogger I follow just got into Boston with a 3.37.XX. She was in the last group that could enter. It does seem like a bit of a crapshoot though, since her husband qualified with a 3.09.XX and is still waiting to hear if he got in. So yeah...seems pretty random.

Yeah you all got busy with the posting after I went to bed!

Yea Roz! Have a nice easy taper and you'll be feeling great for the race!

CN I frequently do a drop off taper because of pain (or more likely just because I'm tired of running at that point). If you forget my performance in the full, it seems to be just fine for other races ;) Really though I an learning that erring on the side of rest is probably what's best--for me at least.

Wow, lots a posting since yesterday!

Glad most if not all of ya' are doing better & got good news from docs where applicable.

I've only taken Nyquil once in the past 4 days & no other drugs! :) Sinuses still a bit full on & off, but cough almost totally gone finally!!!

Swim Sun was slow but felt pretty good. Yesterday no formal exercise (despite no drugs slept like a brick & plans after work) and today might be a repeat... :(

Hopefully get in something tomorrow morning before work. Shoulder pain is happening more often though; I might skip weights (even though it usually doesn't hurt more when I lift) & perhaps even make a Dr appt if it isn't better (or at least getting that way) SOON.

I will be at the Pirates meet at 2pm also, Cyl-e with DH - so excited about visiting MK for the actual 40th. We can plan to see each other at the P tent too before the race.: P tent? What is a P tent?So excited already. The weather forecast has been improving both for raceday and the week following when we'll be at the World. Can not wait. Just two more days of work in the way.

At the start and finish there will be awnings/tents set up for people to meet up--an easy way to reconnect with friends/family in all the crowd. They are labelled alphabetically and we usually meet at the one for letter P for Peacock.

Congrats on the good news CN. Really at this late in the training though I would just take the days completely off and make sure your foot had all the time needed to heal without doing weight bearing exercises.

Forgot to say yesterday I ran 2 miles. First time running since the race and it was so awkward. Still managed to maintain a 10 min mile though I was working sooooo hard to do so. I felt my legs were bending backwards.

As always, I'm envious of your pictures MM! You are always happy and smiling, I always look like I'm dying in any official photos! The blue line reminds me of Paris--they do that for the marathon there as well! I remember taking a picture of it when I ran the 5k.

I know I'll go back out there and run again before the race. Especially if the foot keeps feeling better. 4 weeks is too much taper for me! I'm starting to get angry at runners on the street again, which means mentally, I'm ready to run :D

MatterhornMiss
09-27-2011, 07:10 PM
Oh, there's one pic where I look like I'm dying. . . Looking at it, it looks like the part we ran through the grounds of this mansion from one of the rubber millionaires. It was around mile 22 I think--the peak of my downtroddenness. I was trying to run because it was at that point I overheard the course support calling it quits and I was afraid to get swept. I don't even remember the photographer being there. Look at that pic and see how I looked for 7 miles. You can also tell I was so tired in the pics--even the ones where I was smiling--because I stopped putting my arms in the air and just gave thumbs up. It took too much breath to even say thank you to the volunteers.

I just meant the 2 days the doc recommended you get on the elliptical. After that, it's between you and your body. :thumbsup2:

As always your pics are great MM; I'd never know you were having trouble from them and I didn't realize you had such a rough race when I saw you at the finish. As CN eluded, do you just ALWAYS smile? (OK, except for that one lone pic at Stan Hewwitt; funny, I saw that photographer on the out portion of the loop so I made sure to ignore my abdomin and run & wave to him coming back!) Glad you got in your 2, backwards legs or not!

Anyway, Team K4C Hurricanes was bib # 8193. There are a couple pics of Jim, a bunch of me, and NONE of Kevin or Kelly. Go figure...

Well, right shoulder is still acting up depending on exactly how I move. Sometimes it feels fine, sometimes hurts no matter how much or little weight my arm is bearing at the time, all based on position- worst is when I reach behind my back. So, I'm heading upstairs to shoot for 3.1 on the mill, no weights or crunches. I worked after hours from home on a test last night so I even have a legit reason to come in to work at "about 11" like I e-mailed my boss I plan to!!! :rotfl2:

Knocked out 3.2 miles on the mill before work (no weights or crunches) & felt pretty good. Occasional ITB twinge but NOTHING unusual; two? short coughing spells but also not major! :)

At allergy doc now waiting to make sure I keep breathing post shots; 10 min & so far so good. Pre injection peak flow was 650-660; not too bad considering I still have a little sinus congestion.

Happy Anniversary John!!! 22 years is amazing - here's to many more!

I definitely am fine with you guys tracking me - it's nice to know people are "following." Although - I won't be hurt if you don't stay up that late!

I'm very excited - although today, it's turned into anxiety - feeling like I don't have enough time to get everything I need to get done, done. But - I'm sure it will all work out.

My original target (that I was training for) was to run 8:20 min/mile. After this past month of repeated illness and somewhat shortened training, my performance at the 20K on Labor Day, and my most recent 8 mile run - I think I need to be a little more conservative than that. My last 8 mi run - I went out too fast and died. I went out just under 8:20 - which was ambitious given that it wasn't a race - but I was feeling good. My legs felt fine the whole way - but the humidity (it was in the 90%s) just wiped me out and I couldn't keep my heart rate anywhere reasonable. I don't want to have a miserable race and I really want to run it smart - I don't want to have horribly slow splits on the second half, just hanging on for dear life. So I'm thinking I should target 8:30s.
I'll see what the weather holds. I did do a 10 mi run at 8:25 when I was healthy on Sep 10, and the weather was good (mid-60s temps, don't know humidity - but it felt fine). Weather forecast for Saturday is looking reasonable - temp around 68-70 when we start, humidity in the 60%s (weather.com and accuweather disagree but the range is like 56-70%). Some wind - 5-15mph.

I know - I'm clearly obsessing. I really want to run the best that I can - I don't want to go out too hard and die, but I don't want to be too conservative either. I've been training to hit the 8:20 - and I know in good conditions (both weather and me) I've run runs that leave me feeling confident. But I've also had disastrous runs (and recently). I guess if I go out and try to keep my pace around 8:25/8:30 - I'm hoping that will be ok. It will depend on the weather - so I'll have to adjust based on what it feels like that day.

Ok - I'm sure you all didn't need to hear the insane ramblings of an over-obsessed mind...

cyl-e, don't feel bad about talking it out here at all! We're the perfect people to listen, since we've all been there!

My advice would be start out your first mile or two at a more conservative pace and then to see how you're feeling. That race day adrenaline may kick in and you may be able to kick it, or you may feel like an 8.30-8.35 is more where you belong. I know during my last half I started out trying to be conservative with a 9.40 pace with the goal of settling in around 9.30. I had a hard time holding myself back, so I knew 9.30 was the sweet spot. And I ended up running the whole thing with an average pace of 9.31. So listen to your body :)

Happy Anniversary John! Got a big celebration planned? :listen:

Cyl-e, I like Beth's advice. Just go into your first mile or two relaxed. Let your body dictate on where to go next. Have your 3 goals in your head. Your supreme ultimate perfect body perfect weather race goal, your alrighty then that was a good race goal, and a third goal of what you want to at least do. They can be really close too. I know for AC I (well was before this tib/fib thing) my 3 goals were sub 3:55, sub 4:00, sub 4:10. Just remember to RELAX, especially if you are worried about your problem area. I am a firm believer in the mental game when it comes to racing with recovering injuries.

Well I finally got out there this morning and did 3 miles. Some weirdness for sure but pain level was like 1 or 2. Hoping for 5 tomorrow and get back healthy and get a longer LR in on Sunday. (no not 20....) :silly:

Beth-

You are right - no doubt. Easy for me to say now with our youngest at 10.

Our boys are 26 months apart and often pass for twins - they act like it too. Almost 36 months between our younger son and his sister - but it's neat to see their interaction too. Of course, they are all pretty close. I made a comment the other night about DD10 having a boyfriend one day and DS15 said, "not until I approve!"

My thoughts exactly! I think twins first is really rough. Twins after 1 or 2 doesn't seem to do a family in as much.

John, enjoy your Anniversary, however it works out!

Good luck to all the Peacocks racing this weekend. I just got back from 4 miles run in 2/10 increments on the beach, but it was NOT ON THE TREADMILL! I haven't been having much luck on it, and the sun came out here for about 45 min, and it was soooo worth it to get out there. Our weather has been just awful since we returned. This was the first sun. And it's been all low clouds and 100% mist. Just a big bummer as September is usually our finest weather month.

What a score! I love quotes like yours John. I always think of them when parents say to me they couldn't homeschool. I'm convinced all parents homeschool. It's just the percentages that are different. :)

Last night I made it through about 45 min of swim practice. My shoulder gave out. But, that's way better than previous attempts and it simply gave out, with no residual pain. I feel good today, despite waking up at 4 a.m. Oh, well, the sun is also out today. Thank G*d!

Nono-

:) Hadn't thought about it like that. We have something every night. Spelling words, math, book discussion, calling out notecards, etc. We take it for granted that is normal. DS15 as a sophomore has become pretty independent, but we still help some. Honestly, from time to time the kids help each other. That really makes us feel good to see that.

I did nothing yesterday and by the end of the day I could tell it in the way I felt physically (sluggish) and mentally (Not easy to get along with - at work anyway). Temporarily picked up more responsibilities at work and it's been a load! Hope to make up for it today and this weekend.

Have a good one.

If any W&Ders are still around, what time did we say we'd meet at the P tent?

No time to run today before leaving. Wednesday my run felt pretty good until I stopped running. I can tell my body is not recovered yet. I really want to be smart tomorrow but the smart thing would probably be not to run. Oh well.

I'm not sure if I have a bug or just post marathon issues but some GI troubles here and some dizziness. I'm not being strict about eating yet still losing weight. I really must have burned through a lot.

Nono- hoping you feel better.

OK -- did 11.95 miles last week :cheerleader: Hoping for 15 this week with my rotating schedule. Did 4.14 miles this morning -- longest run since coming back. This was after that wicked set of jump rope, push-ups, etc. Ended the run up hill -- about 200 yards at a 45 degree incline -- sprinted. :blech: Then had 1/4 mile left to get back to the house. Did the whole thing with an average pace of 9:17/mile -- not bad for me. Threw in an extra 75 jump ropes for good measure.

Would love to get in at least 3 miles tomorrow, preferably 4 -- will make it easier to get the rest in during the week. I know I will be out of town at least one day next week and it will be about impossible for me to run that day.

Beautiful weather here. Weird though - middle school football game Thursday night was almost 100 degrees. Varsity game last night was in the high 50s. Nice and cool this morning too -- mid 60s.

Ya'll enjoy your weekend.

Best wishes to all those racing this weekend. After my 4 miles today, I don't really see how you do it :). :thumbsup2:

JRB- 45 degree incline? That sounds like a killer; as does the coordination required to jump rope w/o tripping oneself! :rotfl2: I hope the training continues to ramp up well & good luck w/ the extra responsibilities @ work. :fignerscrossed:

DW things I should bite the bullet and buy the "Marathon Weekend - The Race Retreat" package for myself since she's already got Platinum Cheer Squad. I must admit private restrooms and a temperature controlled tent sound nice... I don't remember, has anyone who's actually been to Marathon Weekend ever done this or noticed enough to have an opinion on weather or not it is a total waste of time & money?

This morning I called MS and booked us our Labor Day Weekend 2012 6 nights in a VGC studio; so we're moving along on my Coast to Coast challenge plans. The RunDisney CM @ the Akron Marathon Expo said he thought registration would open for the DL half around January.

My plan calls for 8 miles today, and I did nuthin' last night (DW wanted to go out for dinner after work and I admittedly wasn't too hard to convince; bought a $25 gift certificate to an Indian place between our offices for $2 from a discount program at my work. We liked it; even grabbed one of their carry-out menus. :eating: Nan = good! :)) plus only 2 miles Thursday, so I really need to get myself back on track. Luckily my weight isn't too bad under those circumstances; 236.0 even this morning.

Weather forecast says temp is just under 50, some rain, feeling a little over 40. What to wear? Or should I go 'mill? :covermouth: Just so long as I get it in one way or the other it'll be good in my book! :thumbsup2:

We had a great 6 miler this morning. Leg feels so much better after some more therapy work at Dr. J's. He concentrated a long time on my hip socket. Amazing what a difference it made. Anyhoo, back to the run. Come to find out they were having this 5K at the local Y. The last part of the course was the last 2 miles of our favorite 6 mile loop. Well it was super hero themed, and several participants were dressed as various superhero's. We had great fun spotting someone and picking them off. "Look!! Wonder woman ahead, you are not going to let her beat you are you???" One of those silly things I guess that you just had to see us running in a pack of capes and sequins.

Good luck Team Peacock! Can't wait to to some serious tracking tonight!! :thumbsup2:

Quick after race post
Had a great run - conditions couldn't have been better - 69 deg, humidity in the 50-60%, not much wind. I started too far back in the corral and was seriously gated by other runners for the first mile. But felt great, hit my target and finished in 1:50:33, 8:26 min/mi. Think if I has started further up, that I could have hit my dream goal of sub 1:50, but I'll take it given the difficult Sep I had.
Withdisneyspirit - so glad to meet you today. No worries about the p tent, hope your run was good too.
They improved a lot about this race from last year and the afterparty was great - amazing access to rides.
Will write more later - although it could be a few days as our friends arrive tomorrow - so not sure when I'll log back on.

I've got some good news to report--7 miles this morning, and 4 on friday. I haven't said anything about it because I didn't want to jinx it, but I'm feeling pretty good. No pain during the run, but it is a little sore now (but I think that's to be expected). Even hit the target LR pace (friday's run was slow, but that was on purpose). We biked 12 miles yesterday and no issues after that, other than it aching a bit during during our bonfire last night (but it was cold and damp so my feet were just generally hurting). So I'm thinking AC half is good to go :thumbsup2:

This has been a fantastic weekend. My friend Jen and her husband were down at the beach with us. Biking yesterday (with some post bike time at Dogfish) cooking good food all weekend, pumpkin beer tasting (7 kinds) last night before the bonfire and Jen ran with me this morning :) Such a good time!

As for Wine and Dine next year--i'm trying to convince my sister to hold her wedding the last week in September so I can run it. It would be fun if lots of Peacocks were there!

Happy Birthday Lisa!

OK did 4.34 miles yesterday - finishing again with that nasty hill. My knee hurts, but still no more than usual. That means I get 6.5 miles the rest of the week. Probably just get in one or two (depending on the day) in during lunch. I know I'm out of town one day - so no way to do it then.

Quick question - my longest run ever is 5.16 miles - I think that may have been when I suffered the stress fracture last November. I really think I could have done 6 miles either Sat or Sunday. Should I go for it one weekend?

Happy Monday!

OK, I'm out for the AC Marathon. I'm downgrading to the 10K. Yep, the 10K, so that I'll be racing. Too many things fell apart (issues with my Mom, issues with the kids)* that just make it foolish to bother participaing. I don't want to throw what training I've done completely out the window, and the way to salvage that for me is to race, really race, a shorter distance.

So 10K it is. I believe my 10K PR is a 54:33. OK, gotta go recruit some fast twitch muscles.

John, have you thought about doing something like training for a short race to help you get back at it? At 10k might be a good distance, and a schedule can help you build slowly (http://www.halhigdon.com/10ktraining/10knovice.htm). Just an idea.

So a little more on my decision to give up on the marathon for the fall. I was very excited after talking to Rozzie about taking a shot at a 4:00:00 pace. Looked at my schedule, and realized my training wasn't awful, and if I got in my last two back-to-back long run/medium-long run, I had a shot.

Well, it would have probably worked. But I have relatives! Between my younger getting sick and needing endless cuddle time, and my elderly Mom's glasses getting ready early (it takes a day to get there, visit, and return), my schedule got blown. (Again).

I realized I could take a shot at it, but it would likely blow my schedule for January, and I'd be setting myself up for another round of the exact same thing! So, I decided not to do that. I'm very disappointed, because I really feel like even with a bad training cycle, Atlantic City always delivers me a good result. But at the same time, I didn't want to have to downgrade to the half in WDW (if they even allow that).:scared07: My goodness, no one wants to hear me belly-ache about that one for another year or so, so I think it's an all-around good decision!

I don't personally know the person (there are 6,000 of us here) but it's scary. And being on lockdown yesterday afternoon was not fun. Sunday night we fly home on the redeye arriving CLE @ 6:17 AM Monday. We'll come home, DW crash a few hours (luckily she sleeps well on planes) then she'll have to go to work; no PTO available. :( I'm taking Monday & maybe Tuesday off 'cause I have 2 days that I have to use or loose before the end of the calendar year. Should be fun, I'm just afraid of the CC bill; between DW's airfare and the Ka + BD tix I already dropped over $1k tonight!!! :scared07:

Oh yeah, we're staying 3 nights in a pyramid room at the Luxor. True we won't be at the hotel overnight that 3rd night, but with the flight not leaving until 11:25 PM and the hotel being less than 6 miles from the airport we decided to splurge [like the rest of the trip isn't enough already :oweye:] and still have a room so we could head to the pool and such after brunch, etc. since we'll have quite a few hours to spend...

6 miles with 2x 1 mi "comfortably fast" speed. They were in the 8s...but my garmin is all screwed up and sometimes taking laps at the 1/2 mi and sometimes not. So, I have no clear call as to what those 2 miles were! Overall was 56:02... So if I can do 2/10 more length in 3 minutes less overall, I have the house record. It's no guarantee.

DG, that sounds fun! I just saw a groupon for hotel deal in LV (2 nights at Hard Rock for $298), so Noel and I talked briefly about going, but I think it's too much for us right now. We're going to try to sneak to Europe around my birthday, then hopefully doing a Holy Lands/Eastern Med cruise next fall. So we're saving up for the big trips!

Thanks all & yes, water will be a good thing for the run. Not sure what I'll be doing exercise wise the other days; need more details on conf sched, etc. b4 I can plan that out + some I may even play by ear.

CN- Those big trips sound like fun! After DW & make it to all 50 states together (& maybe before as long as we still knock off 1 new one annually) we want to get back to Europe (never been together) & also do some tropical dive trips, etc....

Some of us need big trips to dream about. They keep us sane in cube farm land. We don't have the guts to dream big and leap like you and Mr. Roz did with the restaurant.

Anyone here of Virgin Healthmiles program? New benefit from our company. We pay $2.50/paycheck & get a pedometer. As we accumulate steps and log in our progress on their site, we accumulate "healthmiles" that can be redeemed for up to $400/year.

Trying to figure out whether to signup or not. Supposed to be a way to get us desk jockeys out & moving around. Which I'm doing anyway - so I'm thinking - why not do it?

Noel's work has something similar. We get credits for joining a gym, having an annual physical, and gets points for doing certain activities at work. Our reward is not as nice as yours though.

At Mr Roz's old job, we got a $250 credit if we could provide documentation of gym membership, running coach, WW meetings, etc. I think it's awesome when a company puts some money where their mouth is. Study after study shows it will save them more money in the long run.

Beth, I hope I didn't come across Miss sour pants. I have so much to be thankful for. I just wish one of those things was a trip to Europe. Seriously we might have a wine tour on the books in a year or two. Sponsored by one of our distributors but it's still in the dream phase.

Well I can't decide if I am really injured or got the prerace jitters. I hit a run hard last night and my same area in the leg really started to hurt so I cut it short. Woke up this morning to pain in my hip and some swelling. Ahhh, marathon time is upon us once again. ;)

We're all walking wounded. I think I may have done a bit too much squat weight at pump last night...my hamstrings and quads ARE NOT happy this morning. I also spent about 20 minutes on the treadmill last night doing a nice slow run/walk to lossen myself up.

So if I'm really going to take the plunge and do this marathon thing, I'm wondering if I should do it ON my 30th birthday next March--there are two races--RnR DC (which I have a $10 off promo code for, thanks to the scathing review/survey I filled out for Philly) and the the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon in VA Beach which is about the same price, but I would have to get a hotel room for it. But doing an actual marathon scares me SO MUCH. I could also do the dolphin challenge at the Shamrock--8k and Half. It also looks like we will be flying transatlantic sometime that next week...is that really bad for the legs (meaning racing a marathon then flying 6 hours?)

nono

I've done the Shamrock. Well worth it. Every agonizing minute from Mi 16 onward (apparently I was allergic to something starting to bloom on the mini-hill on the way into the Fort. The part I was anticipating enjoying the most. Enjoyment went to zero when I had to walk most of it, 'cause I couldn't catch a full breath of air!) It's a great race!

Quick light workout at lunch - really wanted to log some mileage.

My gym isn't far from my office and is in the back of an upscale residential subdivision. Yesterday I got off the gym's trail and just ran the neighborhood (a small corner near the gym) - did about 1.5 miles yesterday. Enjoyed it so much that after my workout I took off again - doubled around a couple of streets, added another loop - before I knew it I'd gone 3.23 miles in 28:27 - ave pace of 8:47. That's pretty quick for me. Then my Nike+ app "says" "congratulations - you just beat your personal best for the 5K.". That felt pretty good :). Granted there were absolutely no hills - but that's OK.

Tomorrow is the last day of my 15 mile week :( and I only have about a mike left (better than nothing). Maybe I'll do a longer core workout tomorrow?

Just had to share :).

Yeah - definitely has helped. Hurting a little more today, but not unbearable. I have popped a couple of the bromelain today though.

I really feel like I'm shuffling? But I was pretty proud of that pace today. I'd love to find someone that could look what I'm doing and offer some suggestions/advice.

Honestly, I checked, I only have 1/2 mile available for tomorrow. May "push the envelope" and do one mile anyway ;).

John, the Kenyans do what can be described as "scooting", or that is how I keep reading in articles. They broke the mold and got away from the longer the stride the better. The thing with them is when they lean forward they got a very nice butt kick that builds power. It's hard to visualize or describe until you see them in action. I love seeing them run. Matt Fitzgerald describes the practice as "running on water". Smooth glides over the pavement.

Beth, just to prove what a great friend I am--I joined you in overdoing it on crosstraining. Doc gave me a hip flexability program and a $30 strap (which I am sure is at walmart for $5..if I ever went into a Walmart..) and 30 min later I have no feeling in both hams, hips, knees and quads.

I wonder if at this point I should just stop the insanity, put my feet up and grab a beer. :oweye: Heck, I might start my AC drinkathon on the plane ride up there.

sounds like my friends at (in)accuweather. I don't think I've told you all, this Cloudnut is signed up for National Weather Service training next Tuesday night (fingers crossed I make it since it's in DC). So I'll go from hobbyist to trained spotter!

Just over 4 miles tonight. Would have been more but I'm having some GI issues thanks to some bad decisions. Yeah I made some :(

We're all booked up for our Ireland trip. It was a bit ridiculous doing the booking, since our friends Carlos and Eileen are going too but they wanted to go early so they could visit Carlos' family in Spain. So it only took me 4 phone calls to book :oweye: And the woman still manage to mispell their last name on one of the reservations (just one, not both, which is the REAL kicker) :oweye::oweye:. Still we got an amazing deal with this company, so it's worth it. 8 nights hotel, rental car, airfare, and six nights of the hotel is a country manor where we have a three bedroom villa, all for $1100/person? You see Beth, that is what is so cool living in civilization. You get amazing deals that includes airfare. I can't even get a plane ticket to ORLANDO for under $300 in Jan. It's always been my biggest argument about moving to a larger city, I could actually have decent airfare to see the world. It sounds like a awesome trip. You only turn 30 once. Did I mention we were doing that? E & Izzy are doing the 1 miler, and I'm doing the 5k. I'm going to walk the first 1/2 mile or so while the courses are the same, then I'll do intervals to complete the 5k while they finish the mile. Then after I finish I might go ahead and run another 5 miles in the general area depending on the weather, how they're doing, what they find to do at the event, etc...

Here's to a fun time!

BTW, E & I both have FitBit Ultras now; that company has GREAT customer service and I love their products. If anyone is ever on the market for a uber-pedometer, I HIGHLY recommend them! Please don't mention this to Mr Nono until Sunday. If he hears about it Saturday night, I will get no sleep before the race as he'll have me up all night yakking about it. He really wants to go to Ireland!

Mr Nono's plane just landed in Newark, so in a couple hours, after kids' swim practice, I'll be out for 6 miles of intervals. I think it'll be mile repeats at an attempted 10K or slightly faster pace. Tomorrow will be a long run recovery run of 10 miles.

I slept in til' 530 (my only day to sleep in and that is the best I can do) and now on porch sipping coffee. Angel and I went out to get the paper and ran into my neighbor (of course I was in my nightgown) who is training for a 50 mile ultra. He had his miners cap all lite up, his camelback and said he couldn't come back for 4 hours no matter what. I thought, golly! What dedication and insantiy to be up in the dark running on a weekend...and then I thought about that statement...:silly:

We had a record night last night at the restaurant and Mr Roz begged to sleep in til' 7am, we will probably run 5 or 6, and then 10 slow miles on tap for tomorrow.

I am sore, but good sore in my core from 2 days of yoga and that wicked band thing. Just makes me realize that I have really dropped the ball on my supplemental training this time around. Starting Nov 1 it will be time to buckle down and get serious.

Looking for a race to BQ attempt in 2012, late fall or early winter. Possibly early spring 13'. Anybody got any suggestions? Rocket City here in Huntsville supposed to be a great race, but I am really saving that until after I BQ. My next goal after the BQ (which may take a decade...) is to the 3 in 3 Alabama Challenge. The three AL marathons in 3 months, Dec is RocketCity, Jan is First Light (our area), and Feb is Mercedes in Bham (Lisa's area). It is very strange to be approaching your 6th marathon with none of them being in your home state. Go figure! :)

Roz, I really want to run VA Beach the weekend of my birthday. I didn't love DC last year and although some of the logistical issues should be better now that it's a RnR race, I'm just not sure about it. DC is only 45 miles from home, as opposed to the 5 hours to VA beach. Are you trying to BQ for 2014?

Back from the dash. E didn't want to stick around, so I still need to put in another 5ish miles sometime today.

So, Garmin said I did 3.08 miles in 39:00.95 {3.29 miles / 45:00.53 if I include 89.25 feet to get to the line from when the bell went off & my post finish cool down walk} for the "5k". If I subtract out the portion I walked w/ DW & Izzball then I have 2.46 miles in 25:43.22, or 10:27 pace. Not outstanding but definitely not terrible. I'm happy with it since I was doing this as a family event, not a race for me.

I thought the course was well marked (or at least staffed) and was happy that although some were noisy the dogs were well behaved. DW heard about 2 people who's dogs "went down" on the 5k course, perhaps because it was too long and or hot for them. One was a bulldog. Hopefully they're OK! :fingercrossed: She also said she say one guy walking and his dog slipped out of its collar but he didn't notice at first until someone pointed it out to him that his dog was over there and he was holding only a leash & collar!

All in all an interesting event & E thanked more for going with her. She liked that Izzy could go & participate and said she'd do it again.

Hopefully I got some decent pics. It wasn't chip timed but I am curious about the final results; I know I passed a bunch of people once the courses split off, so I wasn't last overall at least! :silly:

Going to grab some lunch & head to a running store we got a Groupon for shortly; I haven't shopped there before...

hmm southwest is running a big fare sale right now, so I think I may go down for Marathon weekend a day early (weds, not thursday) to go to WWoHP with my sister and her fiance. They're going to be at AKL and they're willing to let me stay. And I can save $25 + bag fees by flying Southwest a day early. WIN! I figure park touring should be okay on weds before the race.

Rozzie

DG, the race sounds fun! Hope the dogs are okay that may not been in shape for it. I do have to say I shudder sometimes when I see people running with their dogs and the dogs look superwinded. I think some dogs are built for running long distance (like Peacock canine champion Renee) and some are not. I did see someone running with their greyhound the other day going to work and I almost pulled over and chewed him out. One thing about the breed is they are NOT built for distance and will usually have a cardiac event very easily when pushed beyond their cardiovascular endurance. Worlds best sprinters they are, but they are very big couch potato's. Actually there is a saying out there that is on a lot of shirts--Greyhounds, worlds fastest couch potato. ;)

When do you start back your LR schedule?

Beth, anyone is welcome for First Light! It's not much of a race, and it's not a PR course. Very hilly area around 13-18. Yep, believe it or not there are very hilly areas around here. One benefit of being on the coast of the bay, you have all the elevation changes vs being on coast of the Gulf. (pancake flat) It's cheap, around $50, you get shirt, medal is handmade by a special needs adult organization, hot food and all the cold beer you want at the end. Only bad thing is it's always the weekend of Marathon weekend in Jan so we never do it.

I hear ya' on race costs. Mr Roz is really itching to go back to NOLA in March but the hotel fees eat you alive. Most of them are 2 night min, and jack up prices. It's a little over 2 hours away and almost too far to drive before the race, find a decent place to park, etc. I guess we could stay at his sisters in MS, which would bring us a hour closer. MMnnn.

It is your 30th and your first marathon--if you are still thinking of doing the full. You certainly don't have to do a marathon, plenty of runners don't. I just wish every runner experienced if only once that feeling of crossing that finish line. It is the most amazing feeling when you can truly say you can do anything--you have run a marathon! I know it changed my confidence level in every area of my life. I didnt do my first one until 34. So you have plenty of time! It's not like if you get a certain age you are no longer allowed to attempt one.

I had a great 6 miler. The healthy eating, yoga this week really paid off. One of the best runs I can remember in a looong while. Tomorrow may not be so hot, as I cheated up at the restaurant for lunch.

Don't ask me why, but I'm super nervous about signing up for a full and even more nervous about training for it alone. I know tons of people do it and I've trained for three halfs alone but the full just makes me all jittery. And I'm not really sure how I would manage 10 mile midweek runs without going batty. So I'm still thinking. It's definitely something I want to do...I just need to convince myself I CAN DO IT. So it's all a mental game at this point ;-)

NOLA sounds awesome and I would love to do it one day.

But doing an actual marathon scares me SO MUCH.

I hear that! My advice there: Just register; committing to it (and my first half marathon before that) still left me feeling crazy but also helped inspire some confidence and kick in my stubborn resolve. HOWEVER, we'll see if it truly applies to a full in January, won't we? ;)

Bought some a pair of Adidas Supernova Sequence 4M shoes (in size 12.5 medium; most brands I've been getting an 11.5 2E or 4E?), Body Glide, and 3 flavors of GU from Cleveland Running Co. (http://clevelandrunning.com/) earlier, using my $40 (for $20) Groupon and another $93.34 on top of that. They just opened in July & I liked the guy I talked to. Store had a newton technical rep visiting and doing mini individual clinics outside, and besides carrying their shoes they also do Vibram. Part of me occasionally ponders trying something along one of those lines after the full- MAYBE. :silly: The store's employee (owner?) thought I'd be wise to NOT attempt any change that dramatic so close to my first full. Made a LOT of sense to me and earned him points in my book!

I wasn't feeling a run tonight but I did knock out a 5 mile powerwalk outside. So I got my total distance in for the day and averaged well under the 16 min. pace requirement for the Mickey. I think that is my training goal now: Barring injury, get the training miles in somehow: run, walk, or crawl and shoot for sub-16 pace! :thumbsup2:

On another note: Nathan's Famous brand makes Pickled Tomatoes. :eating: I *LOVE* those things; bought a jar Sunday night from the Jewish deli my friend took me to for dinner. I've had them twice at that restaurant but I didn't realize they sold them by the jar before or that they weren't house made! :oweye: Also on the food topic, DW & I are doing to a bacon themed wine tasting next week; they added an Oct. 13th date for this: It’s All About The “Bacon” (http://thelurebistro.com/pdf/october17_2011.pdf) If it were closer to NJ I probably would have invited Viking... ;)

:cheerleader: AWESOME job- you sure kick my butt speed wise!!! I'm really happy your recovery is going well finally. :woohoodance:

Roz- I'm planning on getting back to ramping up alternating Saturday long runs and intermediates next week with my first a 17 miler... :scared07: I have to juggle some days around travel the Vegas trip is a bit of an unkown, but I'm shooting for peaking with one or two 20 milers on my "long days" before going into my taper. I'm also not planning mid week longs still. My intent isn't all that different from some of the Penguin's plans I glanced over in Marathoning for Mortals IIRC. THe rest of the week stands with a goal of 4 miles Monday, 4.5 Tuesday & Thursday, Weights & 3.1 Wednesday, Weights & 35 min. ellip Friday, and 1800 yard swim on Sundays. Also 210 crunches M-W-F. To give my right shoulder a little more recoup time I'm probably going to pass on the weights until Oct. 23rd; the pool is closed that day for maintenance. Then I plan to do a week of 1 set per day. After Vegas then another week of 1 set, then 2 sets, then back to 3 sets which is what I've always had as my main goal... If my shoulder is STILL bothering me after Jan. then I'll go see a doc about it; maybe sooner if it suddenly gets worse.

Anywho, glad you are have a great weekend at the restaurant and great to hear on your good 6 followed by another low pain 5! :thumbsup2:

I know it's a week late, but I thought I might post a bit about my race report from W&D.

First of all, I have to say, I think Akron Marathon has now moved up to be the most organized race I've ever run, after the debacle in Epcot parking lot for W&D.

The start of the race was at WWoS, but we were to park at Epcot and be bussed over. I left VWL around 8pm, arrived at Epcot very shortly after, and waited in a line that would rival TSM. An hour later, I finally arrived at WWoS, just in time to drop the bag at bag check, hit the port o potties, and get to my corral. Downside--didn't get to meet with Lisa and Rick or cyl-e before the race. Upside--minimal waiting in the corral before the start.

Okay, so the Akron marathon/half/relay had only slightly fewer runners at the start compared with W&D, but they managed to get everybody across the start in under 10 minutes, and I didn't feel it was too crowded. Why was it with 5 corrals at W&D it took 25 minutes and still didn't seem to be enough time to get one corral across before the next was to start?

As to the race, well, I was a week out from a marathon, still not recovered in my legs or GI tract from that one (and I don't think replenished nutrionally either), and had given no thought mentally to what I would do for W&D. Turns out that is exactly the place I should be for every race--at least the last bit--as my over analyzing and pressure I put on myself during a race just about does me in. My preparation for this race: while in the corral praying that God would set a pace I could manage, and that's exactly what happened. I really did not focus on my time; I hit the split button on my watch, but other than the mile markers was not paying attention to my pace.

I enjoyed that they put some of the Spectromagic floats on the course. There were also my beloved turtle/bumble bee/snail floats from the Main St Electrical parade in the AK parking lot. And I heard the song Dynamite at least 5 times (not joking on that) during the course, which always made me think of Roz encouraging me and pushing me during the EEC. Oh, and one of the Spectromagic floats--the Peacock! It was somewhere around 7.5 miles, and it was at the bottom of an incline, so I got to stare at it a long time for inspiration. Did you all know that float gobbles?

I really felt so much at ease during the race, and not stressed, that it reminded me of the joy I used to get when I first started running, and that I've had just a few times since. And what's even more amazing, and that I can't believe but am so thankful, I finished in a time just 1 minute 30 seconds slower than my fastest ever half. (Fastest was DLR half last year at 2:24:10; this race was 2:25:40)

Of course, my GI tract was the most upset and I had to put up with it throwing a fit for the next 18 hours. I'm really struggling with the nutrion aspect of endurance racing. I'm trying to do more natural--applesauce or mashed bananas instead of gu, and OJ instead of sports drinks, but that still doesn't seem right.

And it was really great to be able to see Lisa and Rick at the finish. Happy belated birthday, Lisa! I hope you had a great birthday celebration and enjoyed VWL!

Great report MM! I love how they place the spectro floats out. I will give you a hint, you will see them again for the full. :) I think we can all learn a lot from your RR, how to just go with the flow and not be burdened so much with the "overthinking". Or at least I can learn a lot!

Our taper is in full swing down here. Beer, wine, food, porch sitting, lots of football. Did a nice 10 miler this morning, lots of hills, and hit them harder than I had planned but oh well. I am telling ya'll, next week will be a crapshoot. I still can't believe it's less than a week away. I did have a mystery bruise on top of my foot from run today that is sore but not painful. At this point all I can do is laugh. ;)

DG, nice job on the swim. :thumbsup2:

Hi everyone! I'm back from vacation - and just spent time catching up on this thread.
Glad to see MM's race report - although sorry to hear about the organizational issues. It's funny how different the experiences can be - I've seen others complain about the bus service from Epcot too. We had the easiest time of it. I felt like they really worked to address a lot of the issues from last year - although there are still a few things to iron out. We picked up the bus at BW - and we went down to the bus stop around 7pm (when they first started running) - walked onto the bus and the bus left - we were at WWoS by like 7:15 or so. They had a fairly entertaining DJ working the stage there - so that kept us entertained. The bag check was really organized - much better than last year - it was a snap on both ends. Plenty of porta-potties at the staging area. They did a wave start with the corrals - I think this was to address the issues of crowding, etc. I thought it was a good idea - but it sounds like maybe not so much from MM's report. We're lucky enough to be in corral A - so I couldn't really tell the impact. There seemed to be a little less entertainment on the course than last year - although I thought there were more people cheering us on in certain sections - which was fun. They moved the finish which eased congestion heading into the afterparty - but last year's finish was more satisfying from a runner's perspective. It was just outside international gateway - so I knew exactly where it was and there were people lining the route all the way to the finish. This year it was somewhere near the parking lot in front of Epcot - so there was no way to know ahead of time exactly where it was or how long - and the course was really zig-zaggy leading up to it. The crowds were lining the BW area, but stopped once we headed backstage - so there were no people for like the last 0.5 mile - which was sad. That last bit felt extremely long - even after the 13 mile marker, I was still wondering where the finish was :)

We got our stuff easily and headed into the after party. Which was also much improved from last year - they opened up the front of the park and a bunch of the rides. I'm not sure if many people took advantage of that though. The lines were non-existent for rides. It was one of the neatest experiences. We went on Soarin' first - and got to ride it virtually alone - they seated just a handful of people in the best row in the house (according to the cast member) - which is the middle row of the middle hang glider. And a few people in the middle row of the right hang glider. And away we went. So cool to be smack dab in the middle of the screen, no dangling feet above your head. Felt like a private showing. Completely energized by that - we headed to the Seas and hopped on Seas with Nemo. Then we went into Crush - which I loved - because there were only 6 of us in there - all adults. So WE sat on the floor in front of Crush and he talked with each one of us! For me, that was totally cool to get to do something that we would never normally be able to do (as normally it's just the kids in front). Two of the audience members were also cast members who work that pavilion - so they knew a few funny things - like they said that they heard that turtles are really good dancers and asked Crush to demonstrate a few moves - which was hysterical. We finished off by going on Imagination and playing with all of the interactive stations at the end (again the ones that are always crowded with kids). So we had a blast.

We then headed to World Showcase to get a bite. And that place was packed, and the lines for the kiosks were still long. I think most people just skipped past Future World and went into World Showcase - so they may feel that the party was still overcrowded. We got a bite to eat and then headed home.

Everything went really smoothly for us the whole time. I also had some GI troubles after the race - kept me up most of the night, so I was a walking zombie the next day.

Food & Wine festival was great - we had a fabulous week and ate a ton of food.

Good luck to everyone in the AC races!!!

MM and Cyle, its interesting to read your Wine and Dine recaps! I'm hoping to do it one year (next year if my sister schedules her wedding properly ;)??)

9 miles yesterday and 3 miles today. Nothing out of the ordinary, although yesterday was harder than I would have liked and my piriformis made a bit of noise so I walked some at the end (trying to be conservative!) I'm as ready as I'm going to get for AC :) I also managed to paint our bedroom between yesterday and today, so I'm feeling pretty proud of myself, even if I didn't get as much cleaning done in the rest of the house as I would have liked.

And apparently, I really need to get with this marathon thing. I mean if this woman can do it and then have a baby afterwards...http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-photo-finish-woman-gives-birth-after-running-and-walking-marathon-20111010,0,7434614.story

Is today a holiday? Who knew. Seriously I had stuff to mail! :oweye:

We got through our 10 miler okay. Bruise is better on my foot. Taped it up and wore my Frees to work today.

Went to Publix and bought a few wholesome snacks for the plane. (Ezekial bread for our honey/PBs sandwiches which we love the day before a marathon, almonds, dried fruit). Won't be long. Guess I need to figure out what I am wearing now and actually start packing. It's a slam crazy busy week down here.

Cyl-e, thanks for the RR! I am almost 100% on this race next year. We might have some company my brother and his wife just started the C25K and want to do this race for something to work too. I am wicked jealous with your private turtle talk. That is one of my favorite things to do at FW and we haven't done it in a few years. The crowds are always crazy when we go. I would have loved to see that dance!! Congrats again on a great race!

I like red meat - oh wait, I won't be there :(. Y'all have fun :). Today was one of "those" days - didn't want to go to the gym. Went, worked out, didn't want to run, did - afterwards, glad I did. Just a light workout today - mostly core. Did heavy weights yesterday. Only 2 miles today - pace was slower than usual - could have turned in at 1.5 miles - but got the other 1/2 done. This is my 12 mile week - so I only have 2 miles left for Wed - Friday. Probably take one day off - maybe Thursday. Maybe I'll try to go fast for 1 mike on Wed & Fri - well - fast for me ;).

OK, here's what Roz and I thought about -- let's skip the official pre-race dinner, but have our own up there in AC after we pick up packets. I don't want to be unkind, but while the food was good for the pre-race dinner, it just really was a complete goat rodeo. There's about zero chance all of us would get to sit together, and I don't know, you guys are all traveling to get here, let's hang out! There's likely other "runners specials" available that night. Does that work OK for you? It'll mean an early dinner, but therefore probably no problem getting in someplace.

As for parking, Trump Plaza or Caesar's would be easiest. Straight into town off the Expressway. Bally's is just "upbeach" from Caesars...so if you are facing the ocean, turn left. There's also connectors from Caesar's to Bally's, if I'm recalling correctly. Possibly also connectors from Trump to Caesars...

From your lips to G*ds ears! I do feel comforted in a small way that we are connecting through Memphis not ATL--although we only have 41 minutes to do that. Also we are first flight out of Gulfport, which is another 2 small percentage points in our favor that we make our connection. Remember the fiasco getting to AF last year? At least I have my flight and my dogs will be taken care of. Still haven't unpacked from last week at WDW. Just tell me where to be when and I'll be there.

Which race are you doing?

I'm guessing we should just plan on meeting you all in AC? What time?

Beth, why don't you guys sync up here in Wildwood, since you have to be out so early from your place? You can drop your stuff here while you are waiting for your place to be ready and hang out or take a walk, whatever...

I was figuring we'd have Gail text us when we should take off for A.C., once the Rozzies have landed and they were heading our way.

So who is keeping tabs on the weather? I looked again and it still had same forecast. Just trying to get my mind wrapped around throwaways, etc.

ITB is aching today. I think a weather front is coming through or maybe the barometric pressure has changed.

Watching along on all this AC stuff... GL everyone- especially the Rozzes with their flights! :scared07:

Shins still aren't very happy if I started going much faster than 4 MPH on the mill, so I did a 3.2 mile powerwalk. They felt fine when I backed the speed down. Maybe I need to get one of those foam rollers or a "Stick" to work on them plus my shoulder. :scratchchin:

PS- When you ship me some red meat, would you mind tossing in a few of CN's cookies? :eating: :rotfl2: I hope there will be team grub in January! :thumbsup2: :fingerscrossed:

BTW, will we be doing new Team Peacock shirts before then? I'd love to have one since my wold one got pretty well stained at Warrior Dash; the last 3 races I've been in I wasn't sporting my feathers... :(

Yes, and, um, some running gear...

And bathing suits for anyone who wants to get into the hot tub. NO, we don't go sans suits here... (Now the Viking will be changing his plans to stalk us.)

I started today in shorts and a sleveless shirt. Right now, it feels like a nor'easter is about to let loose and the temps are definitely fall-like. If the rain can just get here and flood us out for a few hours, the weekend should hold...

Yea! Beth and I get to hang out and lament the 1/2 marathon we didn't run. (Which is pretty much when my training completely derailed...)

Just received confirmation back from the AC folks that I'm good for the 10K! Now, to finish some speedwork. Wish the kids would get done their schoolwork!!!

All the planning sounds like fun and leaves me envious :)
Especially the mention of cookies...

Good luck to all of you - sounds like a blast. Definitely report back on how it all went. Is there runner tracking? I didn't see it on the website.

Just getting back in the swing of training - although I had to stop today - somehow tweaked something in my lower back - either during my run Monday or curling practice at night. Running definitely aggravated it - good thing I stopped as it was screaming afterwards. So - I'm resting, using a heat pad, stretching, etc. Hopefully will be gone in a couple of days so I can pick up training again.

Still feeling borderline crappy so giving myself another day off. I would much rather rest now than be sick this weekend. Scratchy throats and sleepiness can go away with taking it easy right?

Not feeling too bad to go to the store where I secured cookie ingredients and 4 bottles of wine for the party. But now thinking again...probably should have got more! ;-)

Dern! I wish there was not this liquid rule in carry-ons, we could totally supply the whole weekend at COST! We have some making up to do in Jan. :thumbsup2:

Get some rest Beth! Rest is best this close. Get some echinacea and some zinc. (you knew I was going to say that...)

I am clueless on what to pack. The weather actually looks chilly to me and my thin skin. I figure if I don't bring enough I can always raid Nono's closet. ;)

Considering one of your pullovers is hanging in there, you should! :woohoodance: Well, my predicted Nor'easter just went through in the last two hours. Sideways rain, and chilling temps. It'll probably get hot for Sunday. :p

Roz, bring sleeves, it'll be no worse than Rehoboth...

Well Rehoboth was a perfect day of perfect weather. I think I may bring my race shirt to sling on after I am done just to celebrate that special day of memories. :goodvibes:

I am packing sleeves, maybe some throw away gloves too. This southern gal may look ridiculous but I like to stay warm when waiting for the gun.

Cyl-e, hope your back feels better! Is the Jan relay your next race? :listen:

Well after careful deliberation I have decided not to bring the exposers. They are my favorite lucky race shorts, from AF to Goofy, but with the 8 lb weight gain, they are...eh...the ultimate exposers. I still wear them here where I don't give a heck but thought maybe the Peacock team would appreciate NOT seeing my buns.

So now I am going as Little Miss Mismatch. Peacock singlet, red shorts or lime green shorts, and dark green sleeves. I really want to wear the red shorts but they have no pockets for my gels. I hate wearing fuel belts. So lime green it might be.

So if I am analyzing the color of my shorts then I guess I should put my goals out there. They have changed drastically since the spring but here they are...

Platinum: Sub 3:57:00 (I'll buy the first round if this happens)
Gold: Sub 4:00:00 (I think I might have 50/50 chance, IF things go okay....)
Silver: Sub 4:05:00 (more like reality)
Bronze: Sub 4:10:00 (very much reality)
Aged Rust: Sub 4:15:00 (sigh...probably more like it)

I did "talk" to the 4:00 pacer on FB. She reminds me a lot of my 4:00 pacer at AF. She seems like a very hyper cheerleader talker (which usually annoys me but in marathons is a G*d send when I start getting tired) I know some people don't like pace groups. My philosophy is if you can't beat em' join them. We plan to run behind the group for first few miles, run with group for about 15 miles, then HOPEFULLY run in front of group for last 10K) Nono did mention the boardwalk will be open when we come through so I am a little nervous about having a flashback to my MGM throwdown with that lady at the hat. So if I run in large pack, maybe people will get out of my way!!

Oh, I need goals for Sunday? I'm typing this without my reading glasses, so hopefully you'll be able to read this.

OK, here goes:

Platinum: Win my age group :p
Gold: 0:50:00 or better
Silver: 0:53:17 For house 10K record
Bronze: 0:54:32 For my PR

It's a big gap between silver and gold. Oh well. Such is life.

I think my platinum goal is to not be sick. Seriously.

I'm really disappointed with how this is shaping up. As late as Monday I had hopes of salvaging this race when my shake out went pretty well. But as the days go on and I'm feeling worse it's not looking good  I have zero energy today, even after 10+ hours of sleep last night. But I'm trying to be positive and know that the real point of this race is to see you all. And to have a week where I get to see my Peacocks and then go to Disney World! Oh the excitement!!

CN, you need to start drinking. Stat!

Oh, and no breathing on me 'till after the race, OK? :p

Well, my warm up for today's time trial is done. Just the warm up. Dern push tide made it impossible to do jack out there. I was sinking about 2" each step. But in about 2 hours the sand will be nice and hard as the tide receeds, so then will be the trial. Then swim team tonight as a warm down.

Don't worry, I won't breathe on anyone! I'm pretty annoyed I got sick at all...the woman in the cube next to me seems to get EVERYTHING (she has a first grader) and normally my vitamin shield is enough. Hazards of working in an office I suppose...

YUCK! Spray her down with Lysol! ;)

I'm serious about the drinking. Make some "Witches Brew" which in our house is honey, lemon, whiskey and a wee sprinkling of cayenne pepper. Sip or shoot, as you desire. :thumbsup2:

Beth, you have done the only thing you could have done. If you would have tried to run than you probably would be so sick at this point you would have been a DNS.

Nono, it's cool that you have a shot at your age group. I love 10Ks. There is a 10K 2 weeks after we get back we are probably going to skip. I am so far away from last years time that I think it would just discourage me. :blech:

5 miles today on the sand, and then tonight 2500 yds. in the pool. My shoulder finally made it through an entire practice.

Oh, and for anyone coming to my house, please don't expect the Taj Mahal. Think more like: locker room at the beach, OK?

Roz, I don't think I really have a shot at my age group...If I have a spectacular day I might have a shot at my 50:50...it wasn't exactly encouraging today out on the sand. My left hip isn't really happy.
