I was kidding. ;) Seriously the horse barn is the only place I would ever consider for employment. Get me far far far away from people!

ok, we're booked into AKL for Labor Day weekend! I have a problem, I really have a WDW problem...

I also did something REALLY stupid this morning. I couldn't find my handheld, but I went out for a LR anyways. 7 miles is too far in the sun without water. I think I might order a new one since the old seems to have vanished (if I can find it, I'll just leave one at the beach). Anyone have one of those back pack things?

Beth, u mean a camelback thing that people use to cross deserts? Be careful on overhydrating. Believe it or not, you can train your body to not need so much water when running. The 24 hrs before a long run is best hydration period than during. I only carry water on runs longer than 10 miles in summer, but I trained myself to need less. I was sick of having to use bathroom every mile LOL.

Nice on the AKL booking!

Unfortunately probably wouldn't fit. I have an abnormally large skull. Holds my big brain ;)

I don't want to overhydrate, but sometimes carrying the water bottle gets old. Especially since it takes me longer to run 10 miles than it takes the Rozes.

The cake is iced and ready to go for tomorrow. Which means I have some more time to practice flubbing up my matron of honor speech.

You crack me up! :rotfl2:

Beth, I am quite impressed with this wedding cake hobby of yours. Have you ever thought about starting a home based baking business? You really have incredible talent. :thumbsup2:

I figured out a way to make this marathon training program work. Quality workouts. Do the same amount of effort in half the time. Storms this morning made me miss the morning run, so had to do it after work. Only 4 miles, but I did on a hilly hill route in 99 heat index. For even more fun made it a tempo to get it "over with" faster (managed just above HM pace). I ain't going to lie, I was eating my words about the camelback up that last hill. ;)

Roz, you think I'm kidding. My hat size is bigger than Noel's. When I graduated from HS and College they had to special order me a cap. Luckily a kept my college one for when I finished grad school.

We actually do have a business, Busy B.E. Bakers (sort of). We have a facebook page and a business email. Only problem is, the cake business is sort of saturated and we're not cheap (we're organic/natural where possible). So we've mostly done cakes for friends/family. These last two wedding cakes have been gifts--I don't have the heart to ask a close friend for money for a cake.

On us going to WDW for Labor Day, I should say I owe a BIG thank you to Noel's boss--she's a DVC member too and she was showing Noel pictures from her most recent trip yesterday. When he saw the pictures of the projections on the castle--that's what put him over ;)

Is this new? I am so out of all the new stuff going on. MM and I did enjoy studying the big artist rendering of the new Fantasyland in front of the construction barricade. I have barely read up on all the new stuff.

Funny you are going Labor Day, I had in my mind that I could take a quick trip down there then. But then I remembered I am going 3 weeks before that and it's Art Walk at the restaurant. (Downtown Fairhope opens it's galleries and does wine tastings and art exhibits all night in the shopping district, we get slammed--which is great :))

I get a runner demerit this morning. I was planning on getting up early and going for a quick little jog. Decided to sleep instead--I'm booked solid all day with people trying to make me pretty for this wedding and then cake delivery/finalization. Oh wait, and then the wedding! Since I don't get to have my normal 10pm bedtime, I needed a little extra this am.

In good news, the wonkiness in right leg seems to have worked itself out. Feel fine after the 7 yesterday.:D

There are no demerits in running. You can sleep in one day and it's not the end of the world. There are a thousand days of running ahead, enjoy the extra rest. :)

I have to admit, I am getting excited for AC. Like I am day dreaming of the last 10K on my runs now. That's a good sign, I haven't done that since AF training.

We overslept and paid for it in sweat. Very hot 8 miler done. Had to cool off with the water hose in backyard just to get body temp down. Think we will get up next time when the alarm goes off! I think I survived the weekend. The wedding was beautiful on Saturday--the bride was gorgeous, the weather cooperated and I had many compliments on the cake, my toast (which I ended up not reading, but luckily I had practiced so much I knew what I wanted to say) and my dress. I slept terribly on Saturday night--we were out until almost 1.15 and then I just couldn't get my brain to turn off. I still made it to Body Pump yesterday, which was especially tough since the instructor was doing an extra hard send off class for one of the regulars that is going to Europe for 2 months. Two super sets--yikes!

I got in bed nice and early last night and got up with my 5am alarm to go out and run. And then I went into the bathroom and heard the pouring rain on our skylight. :oweye: Luckily the rain should keep it cool enough for a post work run.

Monster catch up post to follow:

Is it too early to start talking about WDW Marathon weekend plans? I need a little reality escapism. ;)

Never too early to plan! :silly:

We are booked at BLT arriving Fri. Jan. 6, 2012 and departing Wed. Jan. 11, 2012. Haven't purchased airfare yet. DW has to work until at least 2 PM (if she starts @ 6 AM! {I know, sleeping in for Roz...}) so I'm not sure when we'll be able to depart CLE or CAK. We've tossed around taking separate flights down. Neither of us are crazy about that, her more against that than I am. She also has to go back to work on Thursday the 12th. I however am not going back to work until Jan. 17th [assuming MLK remains a co. holiday for me in 2012]. :w00t:

Right now he is thinking we are going back to Italy for research and development trip in 2 years. I can live with that I suppose. ;)

Awesome!

DG--you could probably get away with a name like Craig DG

Hmmmm.......... :scratchchin:

My Dad called tonight and said he was approved to stop his chemo for 3 months till' his next PET scan.

Wow, that is GREAT! Hope the scan is clean. :fingerscrossed:

JRB- GL w/ 5k decision; my though: Walk a mile, run a mile, walk a mile, run across the line... (unless you want to be like me :scared07: and just do intervals the whole time)

nono- Thanks for the vote of split FB personality confidence! Sorry to hear about your aunt and to a lesser extent being over-danced...

Mr. R- You posted here! Nice to read form you. :thumbsup2:

Roz- The Memories castles projects are actually really cool; saw them last month. I could do without the regular guests part, but the animation sequences and all the stock footage and overlays were AMAZING! Definitely worth a watch from the hub before or after Wishes.

Unfortunately probably wouldn't fit. I have an abnormally large skull. Holds my big brain ;)

I guess large brain-ed is a much better reason than thick-headed! :rotfl2:

Glad the leg is getting better!

Glad the weekend turned out well & GL w/ tonight's run.

-------

So computer is still having problems; I've isolated it to the motherboard and have some temporary solutions in place using other hardware I had at home until I get parts. I don't want to blow $$$ buying things I can at least try to get done on warranty, even if that takes another (yikes) week or two.

From memory:

Friday- Crunches, 2/3 normal weights schedule, 30 min. ellip

Sat.- Was up til' 5 AM from "Friday night" working on computer issues and new backup scripts. Made a lot of progress, but sometimes Linux servers & bash scripts are tempramental for ya', especially when you normally code for Windows! HOWEVER, got a little sleep after that then around 6 PM went out and did 7 ish miles outside followed almost immediately by 4 or so on mill. Then around 1 AM (technically Sun. morning) I did a 1 mile walk on mill for a grand total of 12.11. So I got my 12 miler in, just with a LOT more walking than I'd have liked at all phases of it and in a rather odd makeup! I've gone that far or further 4 times before in my life (3 pre-AFh & the half itself) in focused training {as opposed to only walking at WDW that one day } so I'm glad I "Got er' done!"

Sun.- Did my 1800 yard swim. Just under 32 min. for main 1750 but I'm happy with that.

Today- Didn't exercise yet and I'll probably get home late from dinner and computer fixes w/ a friend. Got up around 5:20 AM to finish up some stuff for him and that ended up taking until right down to me heading out the door for work! Sooo, I may have a rest day...

=================

Two questions:

1) Doing my alternating increasing long run / cutback weeks, I have 13 miles of intervals on the training plan for July 2nd. But I just registered for the Aurora 1 miler & (immediately afterword) 5k. I'm leaning twoard doing all of taht and probably my swim July 3rd, taking the swim EASY and then giving whatever I have to the 5k but trying not to expect much. Sound crazy? I'd love to continue my trend of setting McMillian equivalent PRs in each race, but right now I'm heavier than i should be and my marathon training is more important to me than this relatively last minute 5k addition to the plan. I'm thinking that there will be other 5ks in the future if this one turns out to be a flop for me!

2) Weren't we talking about doing a team run @ WDW around the FW/WL area before the half, maybe Thursday or Friday? If that is going to happen later on Friday it may influence my airfare purchase...

Catch everyone later and I hope I didn't miss anyone / anything!

DG, I would push the 13 miler a week and have fun and race the 5k!! Many training plans have races built into them. And you're talking about a run that's 6 months away from your marathon...one week is not going to make a difference.

DG, I would push the 13 miler a week and have fun and race the 5k!!

Hmmm, I just plugged that into my spreadsheet (6 miles June 25th & July 2nd, move the 13 to July 9th) and the results don't look bad. I just might do that... :scratchchin:

FYI, it still has me building to a peek of three 20 milers on Saturday Nov. 3rd, 19th, and Dec. 3rd. Tapering gives me Dec. 10 & 17 @ 10 miles each, Dec. 24th & 25th off (traveling to IL & Christmas itself) then 5 miles on Dec. 31st. {Everything else other than the fluctuating Saturdays is a constant plan from here until the Full except for no "formal" exercise while I'm in WDW since I walk my butt off while doing Commando park time as evidenced on my May trip! :silly:}

Juat popping in. Miss you all. Caught up on about 0.0000001% of what I missed. :(

John - SO glad that you are runnign again. I would definitely go with intervals (but somewhat differently) and try to slowly go up. I have been slowly upping the run portion by a half mile a week. I have been doing something similar. WHen you feel ready to build, do your mil adn tehn add ~ 10 min of intervals. Build up with intervals and then slowly increas your straight run portion. I've gone from 2 miles straight run to 5 adn total disteance is up to 7 miles. I never had to cut out running completley, but I feel your pain.

Lisa - Make Rick get that colonoscopy! My dad and aunt both had colon cancer. If it's found early, it's the most treatable form of cancer. SO incredibly sorry about your pastor. (((hugs))) Hoping that you get the entire room, as I would miss your parents something terrible and so would my parents!

 to all the other Peacocks!

My life: Still waiting on teh job front. I don't do that well. Still in PT 2xs/wk. Not fun. Hav eat home PT stuff too. ABout an hours worth. Not as good getting taht in these days, but do it about 3 xs/wk. Just too much on the legs to add when we are doing 30+ mile bikes adn longer runs and core which incorperates a great deal of my PT work. We are hiutting our max training btwn this week and next (splitting up on account of 4 days coming up to take my niece to WDW :D ) Unfortunately, unless I have a written offer, we can't justify spending the money on teh race. :( SO, we may or may not dbe doing a 70.3 mid July. On teh bright side, doing intervals seems to be a great way for my body to compat the heat.

Hoping that when I figure out what normal is again, to be back regularly. It's just hard right now.

JOhn - DOn't know if it's great, but it's working for me and my PT started me on it.

My advice to John reminded me of some up's I've had. After that downer post, thought I'd share. You all know that I get things done, but if given the choice, I'd choose lazy. The reason I push is because I tried to avoid going with my heart that tells me to stay on teh couch. ;) ANyway, when I first started going over 4 miles, I told my PT I was up for 6 Saturday. (A while back. I was really afraid of it, sad, but didn't have a real reason otn to). He said, "WOuld you be open to runnign 4 adn doing intervals teh last 2?" I'd felt like such a whimp with my mileage that it felt great to know that I was pushin git with 6. Odd, but made me feel good. There was another time wher he told me I could not do core. I had a long run on Satuday and he was going to work me hard Thursday adn I was to rset Friday and SUnday. Really? This from teh man who said it would take no porgress and a session of 3 or 4 PTs all confirring to veen think about telling me to take a break from running? Silly, but felt nice.

Finally, my PT explained all my weaknesses to a coule interns adn saidn, "And despite of that, she still runs marathons adn does triathlons." Yeah, I was beaming. EVen better when 2 of the interns at different times said, "Well, you could still hobble your way through a half. It wouldn't be good for you, but you know you could do it." This soon to be 40 YO took that as a huge compliment from 2 20-somethings. :) So nice being rteated like a real atheltete even if my shape still isn't ther yet.

Oh adn teh head atheltic trainer there has commented on how long I was therew when I do PT adn tehn yoga to kill time before core.

SO, while it's not been a fun journey, it has been wonderful to be treated like a real athelete by people who know atheletes. :D

Carrie--it's so good to see you back!

So I went to the info session for the HM group at the local-ish running store tonight. I have a lot to think about. The group meets twice a week--tuesday night track workouts, sat am long runs. I think I would really benefit from the track workouts...but I know now I'll miss at least half of the 14 group LRs. Knowing that, I have to decide if it's worth the $$ or if I should just really commit myself to doing tempo runs, hills, repeats. The coach is also really gung ho on 5 running workouts a week which worries me and my tendonitis. Finally, she doesn't really seem to think lifting is a good thing, whereas I think it's helped me a lot. Decisions, decisions. Has anyone here ever done a group?

Has anyone here ever done a group?

Does Team Peacock here count? It certainly does in my book. ;) I think you have to listen to yourself, especially on things like the lifting. If that helps you I don't thin you should quit doing it. Maybe you could only do the track part and skip the Sat. stuff altogether? I don't know how inflexible they are at this group. Sounds more annoying than helpful to me to have to try and fit my life around someone else's schedule and a coach's rules plus I like the time to be alone when I exercise. However, I know a lot of other people feel differently so take my opinion FWIW; I'm a Geek who finds typically find cyber contact with people much less threatening and intimidating than live interaction! :silly:

DG--you all are like my running family. But I feel like to get better (faster) I may need someone who is going to scream at me on a track (which is why I looked at the training program). I also need some help on determining what paces I should be running at, etc. I want to run a sub 2 hour half. I know that means tempo runs in the 8:30 range--but how do I get there in training (I know I can run 8.30s, I've done it in races, but I have a hard time maintaining a sub 9 minute pace in training). So unless Coach Hardarse is coming out of retirement...I need something :( But I don't think a group with 65 people that costs me $125 is going to be the solution.

Beth - I have never heard a bad thing about anyone who has joined a group. That said, though, it doesn't osund like you mesh with the coach. IS that group through a local store? Is tehre another local store you could turn to? Or can you ask another store for a private coach. If all you really want is accountability, maybe a coach once a week?

They are starting a local tri grup here. The main force bhind ist is outr PT/core facility. So, we know (and like) everyone adn everyone expects us to join. Well, we'd miss half the LRs, and they may not be our distances, we don't do track work adn have no inclination ot at thehis point, and aren't trilled with how they are doing the bike rides. Plus, Scott and I train together. When we don't run, there are impotant things that we never discuss. Sad, but true. We keep telling them tha twe just want a social membership, especially as I don't know if I want everyone to see me come in last at everything.
For now, we can use $ as an excuse. We'll see.

Is waiting XT?????

I may need someone who is going to scream at me on a track (which is why I looked at the training program).

Huh, that is exactly what I don't want. Reminds me of my dad; part of why I sometimes hesitate (a LOT) to tell him what I'm doing running wise since I know I am literally about half as fast as him at his peek... :silly: I just do NOT want to turn my life so it is ONLY running and do 100 miles a week, etc. But for everyone who that works for go for it! There certainly are worse things in life.

I just HATE that feeling that I am never good enough and always have to change to attempt to meet standards. My training isn't hard enough, I don't adhere to it regidily enough, I need to loose more wait, it never ends!!! So I've made a conscious decision to attempt to not be pressured to be a competitive runner [and keep trying to tell myself that is OK] because then I just feel inadequate in one more thing. Then again, I've felt kind of lousy the last few days and took Monday & yesterday off {came home, ate, went to bed before 7:30...} so the :eeyore: mood I'm in may be negatively impacting my judgement... :embarassed:

Oops, gotta' run to a meeting! :scared07:

DG-I don't want my whole life to be about running, but I would like to find my (reasonable) peak. I don't think I'll ever run a 6-something mile, but hey, to be able to consistently run in the 8s would be nice. I know I can do it. I just need to figure out how.

I think a personal coach would cut into my personal budget a bit more than I would like. I pay for all of my races and running stuff out of my self established "allowance" and I don't think I want to give up all of clothes, nights out, books, and other random crap I buy (sounds shallow, but at least I'm being honest) for a running coach. Yet. So I'll go back to the Brain Training and see if that helps.

I also hope mentioning my personal demons didn't sound judgmental of anyone except maybe the odd relationship I have with my dad and to a lesser extent my brother; sometimes it gets the best of me if I let my guard down, especailly when I'm already not feeling well physically or am stressed out mentally...

Anyway, if someone wants to and can excel at something important to them then by all means give it all you've got and reach your goal! If you can dream it, you can do it. :thumbsup2:

Cloudnut -
I haven't been on this thread for quite some time but thought I'd pop in today. Saw your note about looking for a way to increase your speed and know what speeds to run. I am a big fan of the FIRST running program. I found it randomly online last year (through Runner's World) and that helped me train for a sub 2-hr half. This year I bought the fuller book and have been using it to train - it's very helpful in determining what to do in training. I really like having the structure. And it focuses on just 3 runs/week (with some cross-training, although I have to admit I don't always get the cross-training in). But each run is very focused, and fairly challenging. One is speed intervals, one is a tempo run, and one is a long run. For your goal half marathon - it gives you the training paces for each training run. The half marathon program is an 18-week program, but if you needed to you could shorten it.

It also has a chart that shows what a target half marathon would be given a 5k time (it's got comparables for 5K, 10k, half, and full marathons). The book costs ~$10 on Amazon (which is where I got it). I love it, but I also really like structure - so not sure if everyone would love it. I've been steadily increasing my paces and right now am training for a 1:50 half for the Wine & Dine. If I keep doing well, I'm hoping to increase those paces in a month or so. I also am curious what my "peak" or "plateau" will be.

Book title:

Runner's World Run Less, Run Faster: Become a Faster, Stronger Runner with the Revolutionary FIRST Training Program

Another thought -
if you are running 8:30s in races, a tempo run at that pace would be hard. the tempo paces seem to be a little below what I can do in a race - you know, adrenalin and all that. I think the book explains it.
The training program suggests outdoors and tracks - but I'm a big treadmill runner. So I do my speed intervals and tempos on the treadmill and my long runs outdoors. Helps me maintain the right speed.
I started the program at a particular pace that I thought I could manage and then I reassess every so often and have increased my paces. So you might want to start somewhere under 8:30 for your tempo runs and then work your way up to that.

Anyway - just some thoughts.

Is anyone thinking of doing the Tinkerbell Half?

So I do my speed intervals and tempos on the treadmill and my long runs outdoors.

That is an interesting idea; I may look into that...

I like McMillan's calculators for pace and everything and I've used his Equivalent Effort estimates to set goals, especially for "new to me" distances. Maybe I should look at his info. for other types of workouts and consider milling myself on them. :scratchchin:

I vote for brain training also. I agree about the pace chart..it is very helpful. Motivation is tough to find sometimes. We just need to keep digging,running,moving.. I believe you see what you look for. So I am always looking for things that motivate me. Delight in the mundane if needbe. Don't weigh yourself down with people or things that are anti motivating. Go with your inner coach. Give yourself some good hard mirror time and crank it....

Beth-

Thanks! I hadn't seen that. We are at the Poly on the 3rd & 4th. We used up all our points for our upcoming Christmas - NY trip. Have a voucher for APs, but may not activate them. If not, we will hang out at the resort, go to DTD, maybe DQ -- just relax. My wife is already thinking otherwise -- she says she can't be that close to the Hollywood Brown Derby and NOT get a Cobb Salad. Plus, she'd love to go see Captain EO again. We saw it when it debuted many, many years ago (before kids). She's a big MJ fan.

We have a big "meet" from another board planned for the Poly beach on the 3rd before the fireworks. Should be fun.

I'm so excited about this upcoming trip -- I haven't given ADRs for the holiday trip a single thought. Need to get on that or we will only get QS.

Did I tell you that we have ressies for BOTH Palo & Remy's on the Dream? I'm not good at food pics, but I'll do my best to describe everything.

John, I understand the not wanting to activate APs thing. But I'm also like your wife, and I don't know if I could be that close to the parks and NOT go in! Our Sept trip is supposed to be "relaxed" but we'll see how that goes.

Palo AND Remy...now I'm really jealous! You better report back!!

:rotfl2: Thanks! I tried to get him to come to Marathon Weekend but couldn't sell him on it. I even tried a bit of a guilt trip via my mom about them not coming to any of my races despite all of his/their I was dragged to as a kid and them going to Kevin's even when my dad wasn't his coach {college years}. But maybe someday it'll happen; perhaps I can swing it for Everest if DW & I can do it in 2013...

says she can't be that close to the Hollywood Brown Derby and NOT get a Cobb Salad.

:eating: I'm with her, actually staying at the World and no parks would be painful! DW & I have 7 days each on NE PH MYW tix to use someday (bought as 10 day ones in 2008 before DVC & going the AP route). Might try and use them for 3 park days in Sept. 2014 (every other day; try for AKV-J Con. studio) and the other 4 as 4 park days in Sept. 2015 (BCV- hang out in SAB?). Wow, me actually thinking about spending considerable time checking out resort amenities...

DG, hope you have good workout tonight!

Cyl-e! I am so glad to to "see" you back here! Sounds like you will have that goal race nailed!!!

Beth, Cyl-e has a good point. If 8:30 is your true "fast" race pace, then doing it sustained in a regular workout would be tough tough tough. What I think should be your concentration now is not so much speed work, but building a good solid aerobic base. That will help you cure the tendonitis thing than more speed work. Remember speed work is twice as hard on the body. Build a good solid aerobic base and then running economy comes. REMEMBER: What you do in the summer will totally surprise you when Fall comes. Be prepared to be wowed when the temps cool. So that is why it is good to suffer through the hot temps, as it builds the foundation. Also I am not sure FIRST program would be what I would pick for you at this point in the game (maybe next year?). You are going to need endurance for the double dipper in Jan. I know, I am a broken record, but I do believe there is magic in the miles when it comes to things like Goofy, or a double HM like you got lined up.

I got a lingering calf issue from trying to run in flats. Good thing I got my rehab specialist nearby, Coach Nono has me back on the mend. :thumbsup2:

cloudnut220
06-23-2011, 02:30 PM
Roz, the tendonitis is much better now that I've been running a solid 20-25 miles for about a month straight. Sometimes is will get a little sensitive, then I just give it a little more TLC. Also, 5 miles has become the new easy distance for me and anything less than that sort of feels silly. I do think I may experiment with adding a tiny bit of running to a 5th day (like 2 miles or something) just to get my overall mileage up. We'll see.

But right now I'm focused on these 4 5ks in the next two weeks. I will finish this Championship Series!! If I don't crash and burn there's actually a chance I could place in my AG (the 30-35 ladies are faster than the 25-29 yos)

I hope your calf is okay!

DG, how long have you known me now? And you have to ask if I took pictures?!? Seriously...

I did my first real double workout yesterday...3 miles on the mill, then Body Pump. I didn't load up as much on the squats and the lunges as I normally would, since I have the double races this weekend. Feeling pretty good today! I actually think the leg work (particularly the lunges, which hurt like nobody's business while you're doing them) are helping to strenghten my leg, which is in turn helping with the tendonitis maintenance.

I woke up late but still snuck in 35 min + cool down on the ellip (while re-watching Weird Al music videos of course :silly:) so I feel good about that; two workouts in <12 hours = a good thing?

Plan for tonight: Head home after work, head to our fav local Mexican place :eating: then after dinner see Cars 2 (in Disney Digital 3D!) while I eat more popcorn than I know I should...

Sat: Run 6 miles, then Game Night

Sun: Swim 1800 yards, then take my Dad to Red Lobster for a belated Father's Day celebration
Mon: Hope I don't break the scale when I weight myself! :rotfl2:

Ahh well. I want to lose more, but I'm still down 79.9 pounds form April 11, 2008 and no longer take maintenance Asthma meds, etc. so i could be doing a heck of a lot worse, right? :D

Upside: Got the automated incremental backups working the way I really wanted, instead of the band aid I had done before! Downside: Didn't exercise because I ran myself out of time... Oh well. I didn't think it would take me that long and the errors I was running into were really ticking me off and I didn't want to accept defeat since I was REALLY REALLY REALLY close and knew it; only 1 command was misbehaving and if I copied t out from the script and ran it by hand things worked perfectly. Okay, I'm back. Sorry this is so long coming, but I've been dealing with a migraine for the past day or so, so I've been trying to limit my screen time. But now I'm back.

There is a long version of this recap (with photos) over on the blog: http://www.990square.com/2011/06/back-to-back-weekend-recap/

As I already shared, I was pretty happy with my Saturday AM race. I wasn't expecting to PR with the heat + humidity, but I felt like a pace just under 9 minutes was good considering the conditions. I did have some trouble breathing during the race (I have so many problems with humidity sometimes). We (me, Carlos, Eileen) had a great time after the race playing around in the water park for a few hours, then on our way home we stopped at a place that makes fresh hand dipped donuts where you customize the toppings. The rest of the day was pretty uneventful--did 4th of July shopping and cleaning, then relaxed during dinner with a mojito. I went to bed pretty early (9.30ish) because I knew 5.45 Sunday would come pretty early.

I woke up to a beautiful morning on Sunday. Crisp and cooler than the morning before--probably by only a couple of degrees, but the humidity made a big difference! This race was about half the size of the Saturday race (the lack of a water park lessening the draw) and I took my time to warm up with 2 laps on the track and a good bit of stretching. I had just a bit of soreness from Saturday, which I thought was a good sign. Carlos and I started out pretty slow (we had told ourselves we were just going to take it easy) as we lapped the track and then lapped the stadium. Somewhere just before we left the High School to head out onto the road, I realized Carlos was no longer with me. I looked at my watch and realized I was in the 8:40s and feeling good, so I decided to just go ahead. I started passing the people that had gone out way too fast, and about 3/4s of a mile in I caught up with a high school lacrosse girl (she was wearing her jersey). She was running in the high 8:30s, so I decided to stick with her. I ended up running with her the whole race until we were back at the track where the race finished--and then she and I elbowed it out to the end ;) I'm pretty proud of myself for keeping up with a girl 12 years my junior! When I saw the clock at the end I was pretty much is shock...26.46! Almost a minute faster than the same distance the previous day. I ran negative splits the whole race, with my last mile under 8.30.

I found the girl after the race and chatted with her and her dad, who just happens to be the Mr. Roz look alike (with the same name) that I had seen at the 5 miler in May. She said I kept her going as much as she kept me going--she knew she didn't want to slow up and have me pass her ;) Her dad did think I was in high school though...:oweye:

I learned a lot about myself in these races. It reinforced how much a small difference in weather can make a difference for me. That Roz is right about waking up the fast twitch fibers the day before a race. And mostly, that I can run faster through concentration and will--and that a pacer and knowing the course helps too. I really focused on staying with the girl for the last mile and a half of that race and it worked. It also helped that I had run the last mile and a half as part of the 5 miler, so I knew EXACTLY what I had left to run to reach the finish line.

I know I sound like I'm patting myself on the back, but I'm really proud of running this well in the summer. The age group award was icing on the cake for me. I knew I was getting close to PR fitness, but I expected to only take a few seconds (if anything) off my time during the summer months. And to run a PR after a race the day before...well I think I'm still in shock! If I can keep this fitness up, I think I'll be hitting my goals in the fall ;)

I did a feature change this morning and added unlimited data to my current cell plan. DW & I decided we'd start with that and watch for sales and the like toward getting me a new phone to boot... At DW's suggestion I tried viewing DVCNews from DW's Kindle (the "Experimental" Web Browser function) and although it worked & the screen size was nice, the zooming & scrolling + lack of a mouse or touchscreen made it very inconvenient so I ruled buying myself one and using the free 3G they include ;) out as an option. Considered a full blown tablet as well, but the data plans are EXPENSIVE and most don't have an unlimited option, so I'd be scared to death of looking at a bunch of trip pics form someone and getting a massive horror-story bill the next month! :scared07:

More on topic, I did crunches & 3.3 miles on the mill this morning. Might try and lift weights tonight after work but before dinner & the net, esp. if I get my allergy shots early enough to have a several hour buffer just to be safe.

Time to shower & get to work! :)

I am feeling better this morning, thanks DG! I got up, got my 5 miles in, and then got stuck in HORRIBLE traffic on the way to work. Not one but two interstates shut down from 5 lanes to 1. So my normal 20 minute commute was more like 65 minutes :oweye: Good thing I don't have to work out after work!

DG, I don't know what cell carrier you're with, but I find my Droid X (verizon) to be okay for DVC news viewing. But I prefer using Noel's iPad. He has a wi-fi iPad that he takes to work with him, and then he uses his cell (Droid X) as a mobile hotspot to connect to the internet. MUCH cheaper to pay for unlimited data on the phone and then use it as a hot spot.

Very very limited internet access. Modem fried. 5 year old computer fried at times. Running is bleahhh. Still moving forward, but not losing any weight and its affecting training and motivation. Restaurant will be open and hopefully busy since we need a new AC unit to the tune of $7K. Most restaurants around us will be closed so we are hoping for a captured hungry audience LOL. Looking at the info for the Halloween 5k...it looks like the only place to pick up the bib/packet is at Wide World of Sports on 9/30. From Boardwalk, I would need to take a bus to Downtown Disney or All-Star/Pop and then transfer to a Wide World of Sports Bus and then back. This would take a long time and that's time I would rather be in the park with the family.

Are there anything other times to pick up the bib/packets? If there aren't, do they add direct buses from other resorts to Wide World of Sports on the 30th? Thanks.

If you are eligible for an upgrade on VZ, the netbook + new phone might be cheaper than a tablet + 3g.

The problem is the cost of the data service, not so much the up front device cost. From what I've read Verizon is discontinuing free "tethering" (WiFi Mobile HotSpot) July 7th for current and new customers. The fee will go back to an additional $20 per month for the first 2 GB of data and then incremental charges for use over that. They are also going to be eliminating unlimited data plans. Current subscribers will be grandfathered if they already have a smartphone w/ unlimited data. However, people like me with a feature phone will NOT be grandfathered. DW's phone is currently listed as the "primary line" on our contract and therefore is eligible for a promotional upgrade now. Mine isn't until December. I've contacted V to see if we can get the primary status moved to mine. If we can, then I'll probably go ahead and buy a smartphone over the weekend so I can sneak in under the wire and get grandfathered in! Hopefully I can find a phone I like that works well enough for browsing here, Twitter, and the DisneyParks Blog at lunch w/o having to buy and get data service one way or another for a separate device, even if that would give me a larger screen... :silly: I really like having a physical QWERTY keyboard on my current Samsung Rogue, so I'm leaning toward grabbing a Motorola Droid 2 Global. It runs $150 with the current discounts if I buy it online (free shipping at least!). However, it is 3G and I'd love a 4G model, but they don't offer any LTE sliders at the moment. I tossed around an iPhone since there are external Bluetooth keyboards that snap on to them and I'll admit some of their other gadgets and apps are cool, BUT it costs more, is still just 3G, and I've had a grudge against Apple since they discontinued the Apple II line when I was in Jr. High and have refused to buy their products because of it (I had a LOADED Apple IIgs back then and everyone dropped development when A went Mac-only).

Ohhhh- DW just finished making dinner! :eating: I'll be back. ;)

cloudnut220
06-30-2011, 05:41 PM
DG, we pay $20 a month for tethering, but it's still cheaper than having a data plan for the iPad. All DROIDs have Bluetooth, so you can hook up an external keyboard. We have one bluetooth keyboard that we use with our DROID Xs and the iPad. We also use the bluetooth on the DROIDs to stream pandora to our iPad bluetooth speakers.

If you can't get them to switch your phones, sign up for a new line now to get a phone, then cancel your line in Dec.

TM-I think I might go with the Taxi route if heading to a host hotel isn't convenient for you to do packet pickup... I'm normally all for Disney transpo but after the ToT 5k post race party I grabbed a cab back to WL/VWL and it was cheap and easy! (Also my only choice since DD was closed, but that isn't the point here :rolleye11:)

CN- Thanks for the input on the VZ schemes! :) Do you ever go over 2GB with the tethering? I've never really tried to meter bandwidth for browsin' and a streamin' so I'm not sure how much would be "enough"... I know the Droids have BT & support HID profiles, but if I can get a phone that has the slider built in so I don't need an extra gadget or charger to bring with me (esp. while traveling!) that would be ideal. :thumbsup2:

No swim yesterday, just didn't fit in the schedule... But I often take the day before a race as a rest day anyway so that's really OK.

As for the race, I don't have official results yet, but from my Garmin:

"1 miler": 1.03 miles in 11:10 {Technically a PR since I never did a 1 mile race (except maybe as a little kid?) before!}
"5k": 3.16 miles in 32:43 {Not my fastest or my slowest}

It was a hilly course and I'm heavier than I'd like + haven't been running a lot or well recently, so with all that in mind those are actually pretty good results! :woohoodance: Besides, I beat my SIL Kelly in the 5k and she didn't even do the mile race first! ;)

The starting lines were NOT well marked and although the race was chip timed I never saw start mats so maybe they won't be calculating a chip vs. gun time. That is OK, but my gun time will probably be several seconds slower than my Garmin above since I was trying to est. chip time and guess where I crossed the line formed by the leaders.

My little bro. Kevin came but didn't run. All three of us wore our Team K4C shirts though; I got front & back pics using the cameras self timer & propping it up on K's car. :silly: I'll try and get them up shortly. DW & her dad showed up later (I road w/ K&K) and were at the finish when I came in. Getting close when I decided to start my sprint I picked a target runner ahead of me and decided I was going to beat him in. DW said she could see him hear me coming and tried not to let me, but I maxed at 4:28 pace and "Got er' done"! :cheerleader: Water stops just before the 1 & 2 mile marks and they were clearly marked w/ people calling out times. A number families sitting on their driveways cheering for people.

They had these flat 1.5x2" or so card stock-ish chips to lace into our shoes and they did collect them at the finish of the 5k. Never saw chips exactly like those... I wasn't crazy about stopping at the tail of the chute, but it was OK & didn't take too long then I went right back to walking things off.

This was the 27th annual for the race, and since it is in my home town and the start [& finish] is about an 8 minute drive away (on the street in front of the community theater I periodically do shows at actually) I just might do it again. Maybe I can set an annual goal to try and beat my time in it year over year, esp. if they keep the same course... :scratchchin: Entry fee to do both races was only $18 preregistering {$20.29 after online processing fees}, and I got what looks like a pretty nice "moisture control" shirt for that.

All & all it wasn't a bad event; definitely nice to get my sched. 4 mile run for the day on the books if nothing else! :rotfl2:

DG, nice pics! We love the one of you with both feet off the ground. When do you officially start stepping things up for the full? I love the peacock medal. Nice race!!

Beth, the series you are doing sounds super cool. I think my favorite one you have described is the water park one. We have nothing that cool down here.

Nono, how is the quad? :listen:

Things are okay here. 13 miler was very hard yesterday and I had weirdo episode on last uphill mile where the whole world starting spinning and I had to walk just to take a breath in. Very bad side pain, just super weird. The heat and humidity is insane down here and I just feel I am not cardiovascular in tune to what I am trying to do as I was last summer. I still managed a little bit above what I want my MP to be for AC so maybe all is not lost.

DG - love the pictures - looks like a great time!
You are all very inspiring with your dedication and spirit.

Have had two relatively frustrating runs recently. Can different shoes make you slower? Last year I ran in Mizunos Wave Riders (or is it Wave Runners, can't recall) - and I loved them. It was time to get new shoes, so I went to our local running store and asked to get the same pair. They didn't fit quite the same (although I didn't have my old shoes with me) - but I sized up a half a size and bought them. I compared them to my old ones and it looks like they're made differently (different shape). I stupidly brought them with me on an away weekend when I had planned to do a 9 mi run - so it was either run in them or don't run. I did the 9 miler in them, and chafed the crap out of the back of my heels. So I brought them back to the running store and they were willing to replace them (despite my having worn them for a run already) - and the guy brought out a pair of Air Pegasus and exchanged those for me. They feel ok - but really roomy in the toe box (is that a problem?).

I've worn them for two runs now and both have been somewhat slower than I'd like / am used to.
The first was a 9mile run on Sunday - which was slower than the week before (and felt way harder too) - there were some mitigating factors - I had gone on a hike the day before and my legs were still a little tired from a strength workout on Friday. The second run was on the treadmill this morning - I did some speed intervals (3x1600) - and while I've never done this exact workout, this is the first speed workout in my training regimen that I wasn't able to complete as specified (the specified speeds and distance). I had to take a break.

So I'm a little frustrated. I was hoping, albeit probably foolishly, that I could increase the speed again next week. But given today's workout, that's not in the cards. So, realistically, I won't hit my ultimate goal (I was fantasizing about running a 1:45 half marathon at the Wine & Dine; I'm currently training at paces that are supposed to have me run a 1:50).

I shouldn't be so frustrated as a 1:50 (if I manage to run it) is a significant improvement over my time last year. But my husband, who ran with me last year, is running even faster - he's on track for a 1:44. I know, he's a man - sometimes I get so annoyed at being a woman

Okay - done with my rant/ramble. If I can blame it on the shoes, all the better...

Cyl-e, first off, Mizuno changes the models all time. (every year they change wave rider a little bit) I also run in Mizunos and love the Precisions but right now they are not available at RW so I am running in my old Wave Riders. The Air Peagus are going to be boxier and not have the feel of Mizuno by a long shot. They are heavier too, which will make your runs and effort seem sluggish. JMHO though.

On the HM goals. Don't sell yourself short on a 1:45. My only concern with that time would be you getting up front and staying up front to avoid the congestion at a Disney race. My fastest HM is a non Disney race where I could spread out. The thing with HMs as you know is that you can lose your goal fast by not staying on pace. Sometimes in a marathon you have time to regroup and get back on track. My PR in the HM is a 1:43:xx last Dec, and I know I was not training at that pace consistently. I would do lots of endurance work on Fridays, sustained pace training at marathon, HM, 10K paces, but not for over a few miles for HM pacing. Then on Weds was intervals where my leg turnover was the focus. mile repeats at 10k, 5k, etc paces. I still was VERY shocked to do as well as I did last Dec to get that considering I was on those stupid bricks and had a weird calf issue. I don't think I did any speedwork 3 weeks prior (which I still think that saved my race instead of pushing myself into something my calf was not ready for). To sum up, magical things can happen on race day. You are putting in the work now. My big recommendation if you were to ask me is to finish all your LRs hard. Push the last miles hard. Progression runs. I think those really helped me last season. Most importantly, obsess over your time goal if it's important to you. Chant 1:45...1:45 as you run through these never ending summer days. Kick your husbands butt!!! :thumbsup2:

This season for me is going to be quite interesting. Racing season picks up in 5 weeks and I am 8 lbs heavier and barely breaking 30 mile weeks. I know I can't expect the same results as last year but it's hard to imagine how much fitness I have lost until I get out there and get my arse handed to me. I had a major food hangover this morning and cut my 7 miler into 4 miles. Nice. :blech:

Thanks so much for your comments Rozzie - I think they are brilliant!
My shoes have made me feel somewhat sluggish - but I was thinking that it couldn't be the shoes.
I looked online to see if anyone is still selling the WaveRider 13s (my pair from last year) and I've found a source through Amazon - so I think I might order a pair (or two).
When those run out - what would you recommend if the WaveRiders are different? Try other Mizuno's? How do I know which shoes will feel best? I always feel befuddled at the running store (and the guy helping me was no help - I think he thinks that any shoe is fine - and yes, it's a running specialty store - won't go there again).

Well - I won't give up yet on the 1:45 goal - but I also need to prepare myself to be happy with a 1:50 or so. Don't want to improve that much (last year I ran 1:59:05) and emerge disappointed! Last year - I felt that the race was okay in terms of crowds. We were in Corral A - which was great and we started about halfway up in the corral. That actually was a little too far up for me last year, as I started out a little too fast. But I was really appreciative of the corraling -as everyone in Corral A was running at a good clip - so no waiting and dodging (or very limited). I didn't find the crowds to be a factor except a little in AK. So hopefully, with a faster pace (so fewer people in front of me), that will be even better this year. I have a Garmin 305 which helps me to maintain my pace - I just need to not be quite as ambitious in the first half - as I have a tendency to go out too hard and then have a slower second half (and a gasp-y second half :blech:). If I don't hit it for this race - hopefully I still have room for improvement in me and could train for the Tinkerbell Half and do it there. The one nice thing about the Disney races (at least based on last year's Wine and Dine) is that they're on the slower side as far as the field is concerned - so if the same "crowd" shows up (I know it won't be the same people, but I'm just using it as a benchmark) 1:45 would put my in contention for an age group prize - which would be unbelievable and amazing. I've never thought of myself as someone who might be able to get an age group prize in any race.

That's one of my life goals now - to get an age group award in some race. Of course, part of the strategy is to find smaller or slower races where I have a better shot
I just hope I have enough potential in me to get fast enough.

Hey guys, finally back. I was having serious issues getting into the site all weekend (the new netbook couldn't get me into DVCNews, but Tim straightened it out!). Long and short of it is, the weekend was awesome. So much fun with fireworks on the beach every night. I did have one sort of fly at my head Saturday night (of course I was a bit out of it thanks to some tequila, so I was surprisingly not freaked out) but everything is okay. And I got my miles in yesterday and today--so 10 in the bank so far this week!

DG--Congrats on your race, sounds like a fun one!

MG--woohoo for your grandson!!

Roz--what kind of laptop did you get? I hope we'll see you around more!

c-yle--good luck with the shoe issues. I was breaking in a new pair this weekend and it was generally good, but they did feel a little weird, which is never a good thing. And if you ever want to place, you should come race with me in DE! I almost placed AGAIN this weekend, and you're way faster than me!

John--I'm so jealous of the fireworks. But I was happy to see the Disney Blog filmed the display and put it online! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SemLkzLWKA&feature=player_embedded (it's worth a watch!)

CN- Glad you are doing well. :goodvibes: I wasn't able to log in to DVCNews form my (old) phone at all yesterday; every time I tried to hit the website it started to load and then the phone would reboot! :scared07: Worked fine from my desktop once I got home last night though.

Roz- I'm also curious, what kind of birthchristmas gift did you get? As for training, I'm theoretically working on my plan for the full now; slow, steady progression of alternating long & cutback Saturdays from here until my taper. I don't have my spreadsheet open at the moment but I think my plan for Sat. is 13 miles...

Unfortunately, I felt LOUSY last night and went to bed around 8:30. Still not feeling so hot today; stomach is a little upset and my head was killing me. Did a saline sinus rinse and that helped the head, but I'm still feeling a little spacey and get dizzy if I move too fast. Yesterday was a rest day since I felt terrible, I hope today doesn't become one also but it will be what it will be. I e-mailed my boss that I'm working form home (starting in about an hour) because I'm not comfortable trying to drive feeling like this. On an ironic but positive note, I think my new phone should be delivered today so I'll be here to sign for it, rather than need to have FedEx hold it for pickup at their warehouse! :silly: Hopefully I won't fall over when I stand up to answer the door... To that end, I need to take the trash and recycling to the curb so that will give me some standing and walking practice; hopefully I'll succeed.

Well my new laptop is bouncing me out of my bank's website. Maybe it's a hint that I need to rein the spending in. I got a HP with a 640 hard drive. I got a good deal at Sam's, it was a extra $125 off one day only sale. The Nono's had me all lined up with a sweet laptop of the lenevo brand, but I missed the online sale when I cheapened out--thinking I could fix all my problems with a new modem.

We had a good speed workout today. One of those workouts where when I started I didn't think I would be able to finish it. 10 x 400 @ 5k pace. (2 min recov) We have decided to just do one day of speed a week, instead of two last cycle. One week it will be intervals, the next week it will be sustained pace training. I am at the point now where it's just going to have to be enough. I am working another 60 hr week this week and don't have a lot of energy to spare. I know Mr Roz doesn't!

I saw that the Princess HM registration opened today. Any takers?

DG, hope you feel better! Have fun with your phone. You will have to get the Mobile park app for droids now. I don't have it but I hear it's cool, or at least the iphone version is. (not that I have a iphone...)

I am looking forward to my bday trip with MM next month. I will have a solo day before MM arrives, anybody have any fun ideas? Plan to arrive around 2pm, hit WF and then check in. I have the whole night free. Soooo what would you do with a solo night to yourself? :listen:

Thanks Roz! FYI, I bought Mobile Magic last night; the Droid version is just a one-time $1.99 purchase; much easier than the $10 every 6 months when I tried it before, especially since I was worried about data bandwidth and the phone itself didn't have the horsepower to run it well. :silly: I'm starting to feel better but still not quite right. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be close enough to 100% that I'll get on the ellip & weights then run Saturday. Time will tell!

Glad you had a good run and hopefully you can get your new notebook to stop fighting with your bank.

Roz- Glad HP is helping out!

CN- Glad you reposted; I was going to ask what hood tips were... :rolleye11:

So I woke up with a headache again but not as bad as some days this week. Moving a little slow but I got dressed and went into our "home gym & Craftful spot" (middle bedroom) there were more things out of place than I thought from DW's borther & future SIL staying there last weekend. By the time I got things put away (so I wouldn't fling sweat all over the air matress, get fans & such moved so they wouldn't get hit while using the ellip...) It was quarter after and I realized I didn't have time to exercise, shower, and make make it to work even close to on time. I usually try to be DONE w/ my workout (& ideally done stretching & what not) by 7:30! So now I have the room ready to use again at least. Hopefully I will get myself in there right after work! I think I am going to amend my plans to this:

Fri night: Crunches + 45 min. ellip
Sat morning: "Run" ~6.5 miles (including WU/CD)
Sun afternoon: Swim 1800 yards & count calories for the first time in weeks...

Monday: Push myself to get back into a healthy eating AND exercise routine again for the entire week!!!

Then I will adjust my training plan moving the 13 miler planned for Saturday to next week; I need to get back on track with the longs but just don't think I'm ready to do it right now after 3 days of doing nothing & feeling sick + the week or two before that being rough running and LOTS of walking. Can anyone remind me what possessed me to think doing a full in 6 months was a good idea? ;) I know how happy I'll feel when I succeed, but right now it seems daunting.

I wasn't feeling especially motivated at first, but I pushed myself over the hump and banged out 210 crunches and 45 min. (plus 1.5 min. cool down) on the elliptical, half of it backwards! :thumbsup2: Nice to break my lazy streak. :D

Wow, run today felt ROUGH despite only being 73 degrees. However, I got 'er done! :cheerleader: I stopped my Garmin a bit late (noticed it was still running on my cool down 'lap' while I took off my shoes and grabbed an EAS Edge, etc.

So including that extended cool down I did 6.71 miles in 1h 22m 11 sec burning 1159 kcal. Definitely not my fastest but I'll take it! :thumbsup2:

So, not sure what others would think but I have a new personal 'fight song' that I think might work for the team- the title is Peacock! :rotfl2: Any other Katy Perry fans out there? :silly:

DG, it seem like you are going through what I just am getting out of. I had about 2 months of bad eating (which made me feel even worse) and almost what I would call a resentment toward anything that required physical effort. I think we all have these phases, they are a normal part of life. The most important thing is that you keep it a phase and can snap out of it just for sanity sake. Mine lasted longer than usual and I really think it was just from stress and the emotional rollercoster of such a life change. So mine has been tougher to shake since I let myself turn into a roving eating machine for 2 months. Usually I just have a bad week or two, like vacation for example. So it's been "fun" to adjust back to my normal routine. Hang in there, it will get better.

If I can make suggestion, surround yourself with reminders of your goal. I cut out of a magazine (well mygifted Boston marathon program) 2 advertisements for AC. One I taped to my locker at work, and the other the fridge. Both advertisement reminders have the date of the race front and center and forces me to accept the reality of what I have committed to. The sacrifices today in training will all be worth it when you cross that finish line for the first time. Believe me, you want your first marathon to be a good experience, and you will want to head into with the confidence of a strong training cycle. Heck, I did the infamous final 10K death march/stagger in NOLA and I never ever want to experience that AGAIN! :blech:

Roz- Thanks! I 100% agree about the rut & am starting to pull myself out of it as well. Just need to take things one step at a time (literally & metaphorically) and be happy I have 6 months from yesterday to be prepped for the full. Plenty of time I think, especially if I start buckling down now. :thumbsup2: Although I was slowing down and feeling things, I know I COULD have done more if I had to. Next week (double the distance planned! :scared07:) will be rough, but I've done it before and I'm confident that if I am mindful of pace and extending walk ratios when i need to I CAN & WILL do it. :D

Oh Beth that reminds me of the funniest story. I remember this girl I used to run some with and I were going up the last hill in a 5K. She was suffering and told me to go on. I refused to leave her and did my drill sgt speech (ask MM) and got her into another drive to the chute. She took off and finished a few seconds ahead of me. At the reward ceremony, imagine my shock when I found out she was in my AG and took 1st. My head whipped around and was "WTF!"" Classic peacock moment. I usually don't care about my ranking in my AG as long as I place, but this 5K is the only one of the year where I drool over the awards. Hand blown pottery pieces and the 1st place award is freaking awesome. The 2nd place piece was like 75% smaller. There is always this year! Even though it's 3 weeks before AC....which is usually a big no-no.

Congrats on a great race and Have fun at the beach! I love following your races this summer. A "tad" jealous!!

Back on dry land - went to the Earl for lunch & the family voted on a couple more days at WDW. Called the AP line and we are now at the Boardwalk :).

I did workout on the cruise. The fitness room was small, but had everything. Knee is still acting up, so I didnt get to do the 5K on Castaway Cay, but we booked two more cruises while onboard to get the discount - so there is always next year.

We got soooo lucky on the cruise and got upgraded to Concierge level for $375. It was sweet.

Remy was the best meal ever! Palo a close second. I gained about 3 pounds :(.

Will be working on a TR when we get home.

cloudnut220

The women need to go first next year because it warmed up significantly from the time the men started at 7.30 to when the women started at 8.15. And next year we want to run when it's just a little bit cooler.

This race actually did have a woman's tee--a really nice New Balance one. It might be my new favorite race t-shirt:

Why do the women and men run at different times? I meant a women's tee as in golf. (head start....) That would seem to take all the fun out of a race for me----my favorite part is "outchicking" the guys in the final stretch.

cloudnut220
07-10-2011, 06:14 PM
clearly I've never played golf

I think the two races this has something to do with the history of the event. The RD was giving a bit of history and apparently the men's race was on a national circuit back in the 80s (with Road Runners Club of America) and they wouldn't let women compete. So the RD at the time started a separate women's event. It was actually kind of fun--I don't think I would want it to be that way all the time, but we got to watch the whole men's event and it was a good race. There is one SUPER fast guy and he cleaned up.

4 very hard-fought miles on the TM this morning in 80F with 105% H. Not a breath of air moving, which stunk, because we were getting blown out of bed most of last night with 30+ mph gusts (that were 13 mph and steady if you ask accu-weather... :oweye: ). Got it done, and finally feel like my legs are starting to get under me.

I was reading Marathon and Beyond on the beach yesterday afternoon, and I had a bit of a revelation. I think becoming a Maniac changed my perspective on running races. It's more like going skiing for me now: a bad marathon is still a better than a bad day at work. The marathon is simply the mountain. I don't feel like racing to near death, and dealing with the recovery. I just want to keep steady and s-l-o-w-l-y improve. I do want to move to consistently being able to deliver a 4 hr performance with comfort, and basically no recovery. I want to be able to reel off about 5 a year without a thought.

Now, this doesn't mean I don't want to go sub 4 in A.C. I do. And, ultimately, at least 1-2x a year. Maybe by quite a few minutes. :thumbsup2: But I think I need to widen my focus a bit to get the big picture of where I'm comfortable, and it'll help me train better than using 1 plan for x weeks to try to achieve 3:xx:xx.

nono
07-12-2011, 06:40 AM
To continue my thinking....I think racing up to a half marathon is fun, so I'll definitely be pushing myself still in the other races. I need to come up with a word for my marathon approach, because it's more focused than just participating, but not all out racing to exhaustion...

Back from an extended weekend in Cape Cod. Despite fitting in an 11 mile run (and 3 games of some not-so-good curling), my out-of-control eating won me a weight gain (ding, ding, ding - you are a winner!). Not too bad - like 1.5-2 lbs. Just need to go back to being good for a couple of weeks. Although that really irks me - I really want to be able to eat what I want, this being good thing, especially how much I have to be good - basically sucks.

I recall last year some of you mentioning your favorite running fuels - could someone recap that? We tried out some stinger products on the weekend - b/c that's what the Falmouth bike store had available. But I'm curious what others use.

Rozzie
07-12-2011, 10:51 AM
Cly-e, Mr Roz does stingers, and I usually do Hammer's. We like to use cleaner fuel as I feel it is easier on the GI. I did experiment with my homemade larabar's this past Sunday which I quickly discovered may have too much fiber. (Yikes)

Nono, I see where you are coming from. My whole thing is I don't want to crash the last 10k. I did that once and it was the most horrible experience of my life. So my main goal is to finish strong. Second goal is always under 4 hours for the simple fact my body falls to crap after 4 hours. I find it easier on my body to not be out there so long. Happy body equals happy runner. As for Boston goals, I do want to get there. I am not saying I would be a complete runner only if I run there, but it is always on the back of my mind...no matter how hard I pretend it is off the books. So now I may be on the 5 years from now BQ plan. I don't have the discipline or time now. ;-)

We've got my 7 year old niece! This is the first time we've ever been allowed to keep her, and it's exciting and a little scary. There were a few tears when we rolled away from her parents last night, but since then, she seems fine. We're going to the new American Girl Store in "DC" (I say "DC" since the store is in Tyson's Corner VIRGINIA--20 miles outside of DC) today for shopping and lunch, then heading to the beach!

I think my leg is better. Now I'm just trying to decide how much time to give it to make sure it's REALLY better. It's killing me not to run right now. The past two days have been perfect--temps in the 80s, low humidity. Of course next week it's supposed to be 100...

nono, please add my name to the list. I am so sorry to hear this news about Mr. nono's job. I didn't realize it was a new job. This always brings it home to me that I better be grateful to have a job, even one I don't enjoy doing anymore. I am sending super strong energy for the best window to open now for him.

Rick found a replacement car finally and I have been having lots of chiropractic and massage care to get over the accident. Other than that, we welcomed a new nephew into the world yesterday and we are taking a road trip to Atlanta today to meet him :w00t: I've missed you all but I haven't been the greatest of company lately with pain and work stress.

Oh, one more piece of great news is that 19 year old son Ian earned a $10,700 scholarship yesterday from his university!! :cheerleader: He was invited to compete on the basis of a 3.9 freshman average. Only young people that did well academically as first year students but came into school with low-ish ACT scores were invited to write an essay regarding how the funds would improve their college experience. I am extremely proud of him!!!!

DG, I did post pictures of AG place on FB. Not "can't be missed pictures of the stuff" but in the moment pictures I took on my phone of my niece in the restaurant. Until there is an easy way for me to put mobile photos on DVCNews, it's going to stay like that. I'll try to remember to post a few here.

Lisa, whhooeee about the the extra school mooolaaa! It is great that they are giving freshmen a chance to excel and prove themselves. I was always hanging on by a thread on a sliding scale. Good grades vs. not so hot ACT score. I think I made the minimum ACT to get into Auburn. Had serious test anxiety and talk myself right out of everything. Funny thing is, I didn't get into Nursing school on my first try on the entrance exam. I got in the second time and had a 4.0 in all my nursing classes. Just goes to show how stupid standardized testing is in a lot of real world cases. I eventually broke the curse of test anxiety and passed my boards on the first try. Okay this was way too much info but I just think it's so cool that there is a program now that is not so heavy on ACT scores. I hate to hear you are having so much pain still from the accident. Thank goodness you have the right support team up there to get you back on the roads. Congrats on the new Nephew. Exciting stuff!

Beth, did you take your doll to the store? :listen: Glad to hear the pain is going away. Piriformis issues are one of those things that comes and goes with me. The trick is finding what your body wants to get it to go away. Sounds like you are on to a good rehab plan!

DG, I was wondering where you got your new avatar. I used to love Figment as a child. I remember when the ride (the one and only original LOL) was a big hit and standing line forever to meet Figment afterward. I think almost all my childhood WDW memories are standing in line in the hot summer sun LOL.

Speed day went okay yesterday. Mile repeats in prepping for time trial tomorrow. We shall see.

Nono, you will have to forgive me--I have no recollection on time. What happened 6 months ago I think happened yesterday and vice versa. I just hate this happened. Like you said, life is never ever dull.

Wishing Carrie a great race Sunday!! Looks like from FB she and Scott are doing another half Ironman. Wow!

Training log: Target was 13 miles. Actual: 8.21 outside then 5 on the mill = 13.21 total! :woohoodance: I'm actually feeling really good after it, mentally and physically. Tired of course, but that's to be expected. Kind of workout I really needed; got me back to thinking "Yeah, I can do the Mickey!" :thumbsup2: Total time for the 13.21 was 2 hours 37 minutes 54 seconds excluding the approximately 6 min. 2 sec transition when I came inside, changed shoes, and started up the mill. :run: Downed 6 propels and 4 or 5 fruit gems during that time and burned 2,211 kcals. That might cover the popcorn from last night! :rotfl2: I think it was about 85 when I started outside, and the analog thermometer in our home gym read about 80 & 80% humidity at the end; if temps were in the 60s I might have really rocked a half; at 30 seconds for each 5 degrees over 60 that means breaking 2:10 might not have been out of the question... :)

Well I didn't know what to expect for todays time trial. Ate a bunch of kcal last night, 2 glasses of wine and a beer at engagement party at restaurant. Plus sugary Italian creme cake (which I am dying for Beth to try, its out of this world!) which sugar always seems to make me way sluggish.

Well lo' and behold managed to get very close to my 5k PR, only 30 seconds slower. It was 84% humidity to and my PR was in the cold of Feb. To say I am encouraged is a understatement. Now I know I can hold on to fast twitch but I have GOT TO get my endurance up before AC. I still feel like dying at the end of LRs. But now I know what paces to aim for in training, and maybe what goals to come up with for big 5K first week in August. Maybe not PR as it will be HOT and after work but still have respectable time--hoping to place in my AG. Which my new AG means I have to be under 23:00. (today was 22:32, PR is 22:01) I still have a lot of work ahead but as Beth predicted, it has lighted the fire I needed!! Now to get my calves to forgive me--they are on fire for doing it in my flats. :oweye:

I also broke out my hard arse power yoga DVD last night before the party for extra kcal burn. Got totally exposed on how much I am neglecting that whole area of my training. I always do 10 minutes of yoga after each run, the same sun salutations but whoa nelly. Now I know it's no substitute for a good yoga burn.

Wow - lots of news since I last checked in
I'm guessing by now that Carrie has finished her half Ironman - I'm really interested to hear how it went, etc. DH and I have declared that we are going to do a half Ironman in our 40s - so we'll try out a shorter tri next year and maybe work our way up to a half Ironman the year after. That's the current plan.

Rozzie - awesome on the time trial. You always blow me away with how fast you are. And, it's good to know that even the most disciplined and amazing succumb to sugar and alcohol! I had always admired how good you were with your diet and felt wholly inadequate b/c I just couldn't give up my sweet tooth. Now I know it's ok and you can still be kick ass!

Nono - so sorry to hear about your hubbie's job. Here's hoping it works out for the better!

I hope I'll get to meet some of you at the Wine & Dine. We're currently planning on joining the others in the Oct 1 meet-up at pirates. I'd love to meet all of you at the January events - but that just never works with curling season - it's the weekend of the major qualifying playdowns (at least on the men's side) - so DH will be busy and I may be as well. But we're 95% certain that we'll do Tinkerbell this year. We've been wanting to get out to Disneyland and check out all the stuff out there that isn't at WDW.

Ok - I'm talkative b/c DH has just left town for work for a week, so I guess I'm a little bit of a lonely girl.
Take care all - and have a great rest of your weekend

07-17-2011, 02:24 PM
Hi cyl-e, good luck surviving the loneliness! My DW will be in a similar boat Tuesday night; I'm going on an overnight business trip and she says she doesn't sleep very well when I'm not home...

At the moment I'm thinking I'll have 2 rest days this week. I had fully intended to go swimming today, but what I originally though was a bug bite has started to look more like ringworm and has spread to several patches on my upper torso. Started treating w/ Lotamin & tea tree oil soap last night, but if are correct in that diagnosis I certainly don't want to infect anyone else. I've read things ranging from OK to swim with it, wait at least 24 hours from commencement of treat, to NONE until fully cleared up. Therefore I'm not sure what I'll do next weekend pool-wise; cross that bridge later! I'm trying to do carry-on only for above business trip (and personal item has to be my notebook bag since I'm presenting briefly during one of the meetings). Company policy now requires I wear a suit when meeting with clients (so we had to buy a new one and shirts, etc. since I am several sizes smaller than my old dress clothes fit properly!) so with those goodies I don't think I'll have room in a single overhead-bin sized bag for running shoes, shorts, compression shorts, and a T-shirt... :( Flight isn't scheduled to arrive until 10:30 PM, so it'll be AWFULLY late by the time I get home! Ahh well. I'll just try and make SURE I get my butt in gear and exercise the rest of the week!

 Just occurred to me; I should lift upper body weights today! :oweye: Keeps me off my legs and feet as I try to the day after my long runs, but still gets SOME exercise done. :thumbsup2: So that leaves me with just one day off, which seems easier to swallow. Even better- DW just told me she's about to try and do a 2.8 mile walk on the mill; dry run for her leg of the team relay in about 2 months.

cly-e, you flatter me way too much than I am deserving. The truth of the matter is that I am officially up 9 lbs from March this year. To get back down to that weight I was I would absolutely have to give up every morsel of sugar and alcohol....and eat way low calories. It can be done but it's very hard for me to maintain that weight and live a halfway normal life. So now I am strict during M-F and let loose on the weekends. A piece of cake, a beer, pizza, etc. This week has been a little different as I had some social engagements that was hard to refuse the fun stuff. I still believe in eating REAL food. Even if its high calorie food. No twinkies or high processed things. Luckily most of my cheating comes from our restaurant where I know that every ingredient is real. We even make our own dough by hand and toss it to order. I can't wait to read about your Tinkerbell experience. I hate I won't be able to see you PR at W&D. :thumbsup2:

DG, have a good trip. Isn't it fun to "have" to buy new clothes because you are smaller. That is one of my favorite parts. ;) Now I have to maintain all the smaller clothes I bought last spring LOL. Can't afford to start going up sizes!

So yeah, I ran today (2 very easy miles). And I rode my bike for about 40 minutes. And I didn't have any screaming pain during either, but now i'm sore. Noel thinks that's normal after a layoff, and frankly the area is always a little sore after bike riding, but it worries me. I'm not sure if I should be doing just the ellip or what. I feel like such a whiner, but it's killing me not to run. I had reached my best running shape ever and then this happens. With a half six weeks from today, another one in 9 weeks, then another a month later. I really hope this does not mean a season cancel :( I'm going to sit on the tennis ball and see how I feel in the morning.

Have any other runners had experience with this? Guy's running the F&W 1/2 Marathon. He also takes Crestor for cholesterol. Well, this morning his doctor told him to suspend taking Crestor for a few days before the race because Crestor causes muscle cramps, and he doesn't need that problem running a half-marathon. Anyone heard of this?

Yes all Statin drugs (Cresto, Lipator, etc) can cause muscle cramps - they all carry that as a side effect. Some people have had the medicine attack their muscles to the point that they can't take the drug at all.

Got in an uneventful 3.2 miles on the mill this morning.

Saw the Dr. yesterday & he said the 'rash' patches were NOT ringworm but rather putyriasis rosea. Gave me an antibiotic and script for a steroid creme (I skipped the creme) and then I find out my insurance got messed up [presumable when we took DW off it since she is now covered from her employer] & my coverage was canceled 6/30! :scared07: Then on top of that while flossing my teeth last night the floss got stuck and I think part of a filling cracked or is coming loose because now it is sensitive to cold liquids! :oweye: But all this stuff can get worked out, hopefully the trip will go smoothly here on out... :fingercrossed:

dg - glad to hear that it's not ringworm! i have never seen ringworm and doubt I would recognize the symptoms...

signed up for the Tinkerbell half last night - and reserved hotel and theme park tix
my goal would be to hit 1:45 for the Tinkerbell
have to say - I was a little discouraged, b/c I started checking out race results from the Princess half last several years and also the Disneyland half - and in my age group - 1:45 only gets you to maybe top 20. Wine &Dine must have been particularly slow last year, as 1:45 got you to 3rd or 4th in my age group. Looks like you need to be in the 1:30s to get an age group award - that seems outside of the realm of possibility for me. Certainly anytime soon, and perhaps ever. Oh well - I'll just have to find a smaller race near home to try and get my age group award. People are freakin' fast. 1:30 is just under 7 min/mile - for a half - wow. I've always just run for my own self-improvement, don't know why I got all hopeful about age group awards...

Rozzie
07-19-2011, 03:08 PM
Cyl-e, I see AG awards as a true fitness indication of how I am doing. My old coach always said not to worry about your actual placement in the race, but to judge yourself against your peers. What someone your age is doing. That has always stuck with me. It is addicting to see yourself steadily getting closer and closer to a AG award. Do you do a lot of local races? That is when it's fun for me. To race against the same people all season, sometimes you beat them--sometimes they beat you. Sometimes I place, sometimes I don't. Usually my AG is just insane , where only seconds separate a award or not. I would lie if I told you AG placing is not important to me. The more competitive the race, the better. I don't dream of a top 3 at big races, but races I like to be in a certain percentile above above women my age. That being said, remember you get one body. Don't be so focused on AG placing in that that is deemed a failure if you don't place. I like to focus onmy actual big hairy arse goals. Three goals for each race is good. One perfect weather perfect race goal, a okie dokie race goal, and I at least I did this goal. Not all or nothing.

Mr Roz and I did a 8 miler before work this morning. Left house around 0320. On one of the county country road's we saw 3 police cars whiz by us doing about 100mph with all lights blazing. Imagine our surprise to see when we back to house that it was our house they were racing too. Some thugs were trying to break into our neighbors car and our car while we were gone. They nagged the guys and had them all face down in handcuffs (4 guys) when we were finishing up our run. Who says we need cable!

cloudnut220
07-19-2011, 04:29 PM
Cyle, I agree with Roz. My first AG award (it was in a small race) was such a motivator for me. Of course, it may have made me run myself to an injury (the injury happened the day I missed an AG place by 2 SECONDS!!!!) :w00t:

I do think it's feeling better. I decided to take today off. I had about an hour of workout yesterday and Sunday, and I'm just being cautious. I think I might do some yoga.

How does it feel today Beth? I was always able to run through my piriformis issues. I just stayed off hills and no speedwork. I was told that active recovery's are best for that issue as it keeps it stretched out. Hills tighten, along with speed. I do know how painful it can be. The worst was when I was training for Rehoboth and I couldn't sit down--even to drive. One 18 miler I had to lay on the side of the road in pigeon just to make it back to my car. But from what I have researched and understand, you can run through piriformis--which is one of the few running issues you can run through. Just remember to live on the ball, pigeon, yoga til' you are sick of it. If you are driving down the road, keep your leg parallell straight ahead, not swung out to the side. Also sleep in a neutral position, do not lift your knee up. (this is very hard for me as I am a side sleeper) I still get it every few months. I don't let up on my mileage but devote a ton of time to therapy work. It usually goes away in a few days or a couple of weeks. I have a touch of it now. Just enough pain to wake me at night. Nothing too bad. (knocking on wood)

Another thought, when I started dynamic stretching my flexors before speed work/races I noticed a huge improvement.

I really guessed on it being full -- due to the time of year and just messing around on the DCL website and couldn't find a stateroom for any number of passengers.

Good luck on the cabana -- you will need to be ready to book it as soon as your window opens. My theory is that all of them go to the platinum castaway club members or concierge passengers since they can book at 120 days. We got lucky that we were staying concierge and someone cancelled.

After doing some more research this am I do wonder if it might be piriformis. The biggest thing for me is the pain is deep, and its often worse when i'm sitting. Also, I can't find a tender spot anywhere, which I should be able to find if it was a strain.

withdisneyspirit
07-21-2011, 07:30 AM
If it happens to be sciatic in nature, Beth, I highly recommend chiropractic. I use a guy who does Network Spinal Analysis and he doesn't manipulate or crack me and it was super for healing sciatic. Otherwise, you may want to get a sports massage and that person should be able to isolate the problem so you will know for sure what it is.

Nono-

I'm sure you are right. I had some minor soreness pre-cruise and very little during the cruise, some after. I ran 1.5 miles last Saturday, but that's really all I've done. It's almost like it is slightly weather related. The humidity here has been through the roof.

Its pretty frustrating though. Guess I'll completely stop running - at least for awhile.

Rozzie

Beth, sit on the tennis ball. Roll around and if you find a spot that makes you want to scream, cry and shoot somebody dead. You will know with this test if it's piriformis or not, as it will be in one small centralized area. What actually happens is that it compresses the sciatic nerve. I also cannot recommend enough finding a good sport chiropracter. My magic man is the only one that can make it go away when it gets really bad. Luckily the past year it's just liveable pain. I used to have the pain to sit, and it is miserable.

Nono, good to see you on the mileage!

So I didn't find a scream spot but I did find a spot that hurt terribly. Sat on it and got it to relax some. So should I just do this every day?

When I am having a issue, I do it everyday, several times a day. I take it to work and roll myself up against a wall several times a day. Yeah I get a couple of weird looks from the Docs but now they are used to "all my weird crap" I do to keep running. I keep a tennis ball at work in my locker actually.

Big speed workout this morning. 4 miles @ 10K pace. (which was my OUC pace last year, but we are not going to visit that reality yet...) All together almost 8 miles before work. I realized something this morning. 1) No more than 2 speed workouts a week 2) You have to live the mile you are in now. Okay, Ryan Hall actually came up with #2 but it popped in my head when I really wanted to puke around mile 3. My pace slowed a few seconds but my form straightened out and I felt my body relaxing. I think that kid might be on to something. :p

Just witnessed a gorgeous sunrise out of our picture window. WOW!

How early do you get to bed, Rozzie, to pull off these insanely early runs?? It is obvious to me that you are so much more determined than I am. I feel like a wuss next to you, lol!! Just felt a need to share that...

Beth, I am glad you are finding out where the pain is. That really is the key! Good luck with the tennis ball although it sounds very painful - ouch!

I am doing okay but I still have problems in my neck and shoulders and lately in my lower back. I think sometimes when i am in pain, however, it can get worse with inactivity. The catch 22 in action. I have been living at the chiropracter and the massage therapist and I do feel like it is healing finally.:fingerscrossed: My last really bad day was Monday. I have problems turning my head to the left which really infringes on driving.

Nono, good to see you on the mileage!

Roz, I just have to get to 10 comfortably on the sand, and then all will be good. I think I'm going to run the Sea Isle 10 Mile Sand race in my Vibrams (a couple passes on the boardwalk...)

I'm with Lisa -
I can't believe the hour you went running at, Roz
I'm so proud of myself when I get up at 5:45 to go work out - I never thought I'd do anything in the 5's.
I can't imagine doing what you do...

Well first off it's a way of like down here. I know other people who do it. With the extreme heat you have to beat the sun. Either day or night. We have a lot of running friends that wait for the sun to go down, but I have to get up anyway at 430am to go to work, what is another hour to hour and half of lost sleep. I am lucky that I have a job that I can be home most days by 3pm that allows me to take a nap when I get in---or if no nap go to bed by 830pm.

So has anyone melted yet up North? Weather can be so relative. It's amazing how the weather can afffect us when we are not used to the extremes. I know 5 days in a row of below freezing temps and I about go nuts. :silly:

It's only 99 F here. So while the air conditioning is on in the house (for the wallpapering), I drove dd to and from swim practice with the windows down. Ahhhhh, the ocean's breeze!

From the posts of FB it seems some your neighbors are not faring as well as you. :D

I have a very non-scientific theory on heat and running. People that live inside in cooler AC temps are not able to acculmate to humidity. Or it takes a much longer period of time. It's why we keep our AC on 84 during day, and 80 during the night. If we drive to our favorite LR spot on Sunday mornings, we roll the windows down and let our bodies stay at the same temp during the drive. To go from cold blasting AC, then hop out in 100 degree real feel weather is just not a smart thing to do. Your thermoregulation of your brain just flips out. I think that is why you have always done so well in hot weather running. You live your life at a natural temp. :thumbsup2:

5 1/2 miles of running in the ocean this morning. And then some diving in the waves to boot! Ocean feels COLD! So refreshing! So, anyone who lives within a couple miles of me who's complaining should just go dunk him/herself in the water. For the folks inland, heck, I totally feel for them. Inland the same temp is just so darn oppressive!

Got a little bit more mileage to do later after some wallpapering, and tomorrow is shaping up to be a double as well. I think we might be having a date-night run tomorrow night. :goodvibes:
