2 x 4 miles this morning...first 4 on the boardwalk alone with Warren Buffett's biography, then the second 4 with Renee on the sand. No complaints!

5 min walking, 5 running, 5 walking, 5 running, 5 walking.

Treadmill with zero incline. Gotta start somewhere.

So far so good. It was so hard to hold back - barely broke a sweat. Made me feel like maybe I'm in ok shape still. Did about 30 minutes of weight training after.

We will see how I feel tomorrow. I'd like to try to hit the pavement, but probably need baby steps.

Thanks for all the support.

Mr. Roz-

Thank you! Doesn't feel like it - but, I'll take it.

Keep waiting for the pain to set in, but so far so good :).

I got 1.82 miles in durin that 25 minutes, but forgot to bring my phone with me, so I didn't get to log it into my Nike+ app. :(

It did feel good, just to be moving again. At this point, I'd have been happy to have gotten back on the elliptical again.

You all have really helped me through this and I sincerely appreciate it.

If I'm not hurting in the morning, I might try to get another 25 minutes in.

Yeah John!!!!!!! We were talking about you on this mornings LR and how happy we both were you were getting back to the roads. Were your ears burning? ;)

Well we had a 13 miler scheduled for this morning and it dawned on me. It's the Princess/Porncess this morning. So I dug out my Princess tech that I never wear. (for some reason it's not one of my go to shirts) We did the hilly route and hit the hills hard. I took one gel with me just in case, didn't know how my body would respond with the new clean lifestyle. Well lo and behold the water fountain was broken, so never could take my gel when I felt like possibly I could use a little of it. So no water or gel for 2 hours in hot/humid weather. I don't know if it was mental, how hot/humid it was or what but by the time I got back to the house I was depleted. Weird, as usually I don't have to fuel now until I get to 15 miles. I even had my weekly treat last night for some extra kcal. ( toasted ezekial bread, topped with 1 TBSP of PB, half of banana) I think it's my body just learning to run on less. I do think I am going to buy some coconut water and replenish with that after LRs. Tosca really likes it after major cardio sessions.

The good news is my body is changing. My tastebuds are changing. Everything is tasting so different. Fruit is so sweet now, carrots are so sweet. I can taste all this natural flavorings in things. It's been 2 weeks now and I am very happy I made the change.

Did have my first serving of flour this morning after LR. We made some cottage cheese pancakes out of one of the EC Cookbooks. Basically its KAF Whole Wheat Flour, Greek yogurt, egg whites, 1% cottage cheese, cinnamon, baking powder, chia seeds, 1 TBSP of Maple Syrup Flakes (allowed, first "allowed" sweetener I have had). We topped them with heated blueberries with water for our syrup, split half a banana and placed on top, and cut up a fresh strawberry. Had Moistened cakes with a dallop of Greek yogurt and unsweetened applesauce. YUMMMYYYYY! :eating: Didn't even miss the butter and syrup. :)

Nope - no burning - but that is sweet of you both to care.

Knee was a little sore this morning, but less than normal without running. So I did the same TM routine as yesterday and then worked on some weight training and some abs.

Still taking the turmeric, just to be safe. Things are progressing nicely.

Anyone got any thoughts on a training program to get me restarted? Yes, I'm getting excited, but will try to take it slow. I think it will be easier to go slow now that I'm skin other workouts.

Y'all have a great Sunday!

John-that is AWESOME news!!! :yahoo: Maybe you want to do a 5k training plan to keep you relatively low mileage? I think Higdon has a couple of good ones.

Rozes--I made a pancake today that would make you smile. I seriously thought "the Rozes would love this" as I ate it.

I did my first "official" LR of this cycle yesterday--5 miles and it felt good! Today, in effort to actually do some weight training other than planks, I went to BodyPump. Wow, that was a good workout. 75 minutes of muscle work. When it got tough I just tried to visualize those PRs. :D

OK Cloudnut -- what's my weather going to be tomorrow?? weather.com is saying 80% chance of rain. accuweather.com is saying 0% after 6 a.m. I need your professional, cloudnut opinion!

'Cause, I just fell apart completely out there in the cold breeze/warm sun/too many cars/some GI issues. Got 1 mile in, and was almost run over 2x in that mile. I realized how many people were in town, and combined with the lack of open rest room facilities, I could see for some serious  if my GI issues were to get serious. I decided I wasn't going to get a medal no matter what today, hero or not... So, I'm gearing up for yoga, stength and stretching instead.

I usually say 1800 yards = "72 lengths or 36 laps - a little over a mile". A lap on the track is all the way around, so a lap in the pool is out and back is what I was always taught.

On my log, I'm still converting this to 2/3 running time, so I get an equivalency of 4 miles for it! :goodvibes:

I love it! But using my hand paddles and short fins I did my main 1750 in 30:15.49 yesterday; so how many mile equivalents do I get? :confused24:

My run on Saturday felt GREAT; 83 minutes of intervals on the mill; I think it called things 8.3 miles when i added in my warm-up and cool down. :)

Not sure about this new forum setup and I've got a meeting momentarily; hope to check in and catch up more soon!!!

Mtg. ended up being quick. :)

Lisa- GL getting things worked out job wise. I can udnerstand feeling responsible and the like; DW has run into similar conundrums where best for us seemed at odds with loyalty to others...

after all if it gets you back to the roads I am sure I would wear high healed clown shoes.

That might be interesting to see... :rotfl2:

JRB- AWESOME on the shoes and getting (literally!) back on your feet!!! :cheerleader: Can't wait to read more. :thumbsup2:

nono- Sorry to read GI issues... :(

I was feeling a bit off late yesterday myself. Started ~2 hours after eating dinner; a terriaki spaghetti squash dish DW thought upset things for me last time she made it. Wondering if it is the rapid and large does of fiber it includes... Could also be a coinky-dink though! ;) Between that, being awakend several times by the storm last night and having some alergy eyes & headache issues I didn't run this AM, but plan to knock out crunches and 39 minutes on 'mill RIGHT AFTER WORK. DW is planning on shopping on her way home, so dinner won't be an immediate threat even if we are both hungry. I'll have to play tomorrow by ear; I might try for AM [Anyone here think 12 hours apart is a bad idea since I'm not used to less than 24ish?] otherwise I'll probably push myself to hit the mill after Praise Team rehearsal. But for now I'll try and just worry about today!

Okay I can't figure out how to do a quote on the new mobile site so I apologize if this comes out wonky.

Jrbdad I agree with CN in starting at the beginning with something like a couch to 5K program (unless your PT prescribes something else) since you've been out so long and had so many injuries.

It didn't show up on the mobile version. But now I'm on the full version, so it's better.

Okay, so to catch everyone up to speed on my latest exploits: Saturday I did 7 miles of intervals: 3min walking and 2 min running. The first half (it was an out and back) I averaged an 11 min mile pace--doing walk/run intervals! The second half it slowed to just under 12 min mile, (since I was running really hard during my run intervals--almost like speed work--and my legs were just getting tired during the runs) but I'm still really happy with it. And, I'm planning on doing it in each of my long runs during the month of March. To me, it almost seems like LR combined with speed work combined with XT (since I use my legs differently when speed walking vs running).

And, I used my applesauce pouch during the run for nutrition. I'm planning on incorporating them more into my LR nutrition.

Well I am now down 7 lbs in 2 weeks. The weight is coming off at a alarmingly fast rate, but I do hope it slows down next week. If not I may have to adjust my kcal intake some. I don't starve, don't feel deprieved, feel great. My long distance runs are going to need to be tinkered with nutriton wise. There is a body part of mine that is shockingly smaller. Can't figure out if this is a good thing, or a bad thing. I will give you one clue, THE Viking may not believe it's a good thing. ;)

DG, how does E prepare the spagetti squash? It's something I want to try--found some great recipes.

Foot was acting weird yesterday so took today off. Feels okay now, going to do hour of yoga and our Dana ab workout. That ab workout is freakin' brutal. When I was running yesterday I could feel every muscle in my abs quivering from soreness. Guess I needed it!

Only ran 2 today. The wind really had it in for me. I won't bore you with the whole thing. But it took two tries outside to get 2 miles in. Total. With a couple of hat chases, stops to adjust the mp3 player because the wind was so loud I couldn't hear it.... It was a case of "I fought the wind, and the wind won!" Tomorrow's another day.

Per DW:

Instead of baking, after I split the squash and scoop out the seeds I microwave it for 7-10 minutes and then scrape out with a fork.

Also, last night we used a beef tenderloin instead of pork & she did it as a side dish with broccoli slaw.

I'll probably get this not quite right, but here you go. It's based upon how many miles you generally run in an hour. In an hour, I generally run 6 miles. The equivalency for the 1 hour of swimming for me is 2/3 of that: 4 miles.

withdisneyspirit
03-01-2011, 06:10 AM
Rozzie, haven't you been lighter before than you are right now? Is this body part smaller than it was before when you were lighter? If so, that might be too rapid weight loss. :silly: I am down 14 pounds now but since Jan 14 - still pretty rapid for me :w00t: (2.3 pounds per week). But, I remind myself that the first weigh-in was the day after returning from Disney, lol!

The wind would have won here too yesterday, nono! We had some very bad though short-lived weather. It happened right when Rick picked me up from work. We only wanted the one car so we could go visit my parents... The sky started spewing golf ball size hail on us!! :blech: We rushed home to our garage, lol, and waited about 30 minutes and then went to visit!

Work is unbearable as always and now my old boss is pushing hard for me to go to lunch with him and he wants to recruit me also. It is a miserable situation though because even though I like him, he now works at a place where there are two people that are above him that I simply cannot work for... I am sorry to bore y'all with the details :boohoohoo:

DisneyGeek

nono- Thanks! I actually tried Googling and searching RW some last night but couldn't come up with much. 30 min. swim * 2/3rds = not all that much mileage for me... ;)

Lisa- Bore away if you want / need to!

So I hopped on the mill I normally use (as in last night) this AM and the belt started slipping! :scared07: At first I thought it was me but when i accelerated from a warm-up walk to running it got a LOT worse. I stopped, tried it again- some problem at a few different speeds. Not good. Therefore I switched to our smaller 'mill [the one that seems to run faster and since it is narrower & shorter is harder to use!] and after 15 min. I noticed an odd sound and finally realized the belt was shifting left and starting to rub on the outer rail on it! :oweye: Cut the workout in half and only did 22:30 of intervals. But I got to work a little early with the trash + recycling out, so I guess it wasn't ALL bad... I'm hoping to adjust the belts tomorrow night and then get in normal 45 min. Thursday morning and bump from 45 (cutback week from last Sat's 83) to 60 min. Sat. so total miles are unchanged for the week. :D No swimming Sunday; will be at the theater during the hours the pool is open. Already told DW if we renew season tix (probably still nose bleed seats though!) I want Sunday evening performances, not matinees since we wouldn't get home THAT late on a 'school night' and then I could still go to church and exercise when everything overlaps like it will this weekend... To be fair, back when we bought the sub. though the pool openeed at 9 AM instead of noon, so then there wasn't a conflict, just a BUST morning. :silly:

I'm exhausted. My uncle died unexpectedly and they found him yesterday. I've been with my mom for the past day working on funeral arrangements. Gorgeous afternoon here. Would attempt a double, did 7 miles already this morning but think I am going to chill out on the back porch with the dogs. ;)

Lisa, I am 3 lbs away from my lightest in recent memory. I am beefing up protein to hold onto muscle and feel good. I think I had a LOT of water retention to get rid of too, as I went on that super binge before I started.

Roz-do you think you're going to stay on the no butter/sugar/anything forever? No treats again?

My affair with sugar is OVER. Of course I can have a piece of this or that on very special occasions. (WDW for instance) But to be honest, I am finding that I can live my life without processed white stuff. I can add agave, honey, unsweetened applesauce, maple sugar flakes, etc to baking and get very good results. I haven't added very much at all of the allowed sweeteners yet as I still working on my sweet addiction. It's a serious problem I have, I have something sweet one day and then I crave it more the next day. Endless cycle. Tired of it!

As a diabetic that only manages blood sugar levels through diet and exercise - I admire YOUR diet. Not sure I could go that far, though I'm sure I'd end up feeling better.

Rozzie, have you done a thorough check on agave's value health-wise?

I have! Basically it's like this. Very little amounts on a splurge are fine. Taking it every day in coffee, tea or sweets not good. It produces a insulin response just like sugar. So no, it's not a great alternative for diabetics, but for those trying to avoid processed white stuff it works. Stevia is also off my list. It's good for diabetics, but not good for me on daily basis. By having it in coffee first thing I find that it increases my appetite for more sweet stuff. I don't take coffee every day anymore, do plain green tea in the week--coffee only on weekends.

Basically all naturally occuring added sugars should be taken sparingly. I am trying to limit my exposure to them one time a week. For instance my cottage cheese pancakes need maple sugar flakes, so that is my weekly exposure to it. Very small exposure I might add, 1 TBSP for a batter that makes 6 pancakes. I might increase my exposure as my sugar battle becomes less of a issue.

Rozzie,

If you ever want to understand the science of why it's happening, I think I have a book recommendation for you. I'll know for sure when I'm done reading it in a couple days!

MM,

I didn't see that you PMed me before the change-over. The new notification indicator on this new format doesn't work for 46 yr old eyes! So I just saw that you sent me a message, and I responded last night. (Just mentioning it here in case the new notification indicator doesn't work for younger eyes either! -- I have no data on that though!!!)

Geek,

With the equivalency, I don't get any more miles by getting faster in the water...only by getting faster on the road! Why? Because the primary sport being measured is running. Swimming is just a support mechanism. Now, if it were the opposite, then to Salizar's way of thinking, miles on the road would convert to yardage... I buy it, but not sure it works for the masses.

DS12 was playing baseball last night & got hit by a pitch (left seam marks) on his leg & he pitched until he had to sit with a sore elbow, so he basically bathed in the arnica gel last night & this morning. But he said it helped.

Wow - 2.5 hours at physical therapy today. Glad I have some flexibility at work. Had 3 therapists watching me run, squat, etc. They are all of the opinion that the problem in my knee stems from my old ankle injury.

Said the motion control shoes are definitely helping, but I'm still over-pronating fairly severly. Got new inserts for my everyday shoes. They want me to look into special running orthotics - "super feet" anyone have any experience?

Better than it has been - pain is much less - hoping we can make further corrections.

My inserts (from the PT) are Sole's (http://www.yoursole.com/products/footbeds/signature/karnazes/) I like them a lot, and the PT molded them to my feet.

Thanks! In researching the superfeet insoles it referenced a dealer in my hometown - a FitRight Active store - come to find out they are opening in less than two weeks and will specialize in running, cycling, and triatheletes. They had the Owner's cell phone listed on their website. He was very helpful - said he hopes to have some in tomorrow or Friday & is going to let me come in then. Yes, I'm excited.

Total reshuffling of the schedule. I just figured out that I'm doing WAY more than the plan had originally called for, esp. because I forgot to take anything off my schedule when I added 2 hrs of swimming/week into it. I'm flat out exhausted -- already had a nap and just can't even fathom doing something tonight and then going out for 10 in the morning. So, the slideboarding was cut from tonight's schedule. Unfortunately, it didn't have any great halo effect lift --- I'm still tired!:dizzy:

That is awesome news about your new store opening there, John! :yahoo:

The arnica cream or gel really will help bruising and soreness; that is exactly what it does! It works wonders for me The science is in on this too! I have the oil but I am sure they are all equally helpful.

Here is the update on my job: drama, drama, drama, blah, blah, blah!! That is what I will go with today...:covermouth:

Lisa-booooooo on the work drama. Contiuing to send you happy thoughts!

We went to see the new 25th anniversary tour of Les Miz last night. It was very good, but definitely different than when I had seen it before in NYC. The only bad thing about going was we saw the ads for next season's Broadway Across America tour, and both Lion King and Mary Poppins are part of it! Guess we might be getting season tickets.

Also, is anyone able to access the mobile site? Mine isn't working at all.

Not sure I mentioned it, but DW was sick Tuesday and really bad yesterday (cold / flu stuff). I started fading fast yesterday evening and am not great this morning. Didn't work on either mill last night; went to bed early and took extra vitamin C instead to see if I could dodge or at least minimize being sick! :) Hopefully I'll get the big one adjusted and get in a run tonight; we'll see how I feel...

JRB- Cool on the new store!

cn--I haven't been on the mobile site in a couple of days, but at that time, most of the buttons appeared just for looks and were not at all functional

Okay, so my flight leaves in 12.5 hours for WDW. I've felt very overwhelmed this week feeling I have to balance work, exercise, diet, down-time, sleep, and a very long commute. Taking an inspiration from Karnazes, I started running during my lunch, even if that just meant 10 mins. But, hey, it works! Speaking of Dean Karnazes, I think "50/50" is a great book and would recommend it to any runner, even if you never run a marathon (let alone 50 in 50 days). But is full of little tidbits and lots of inspiration.

Haha--I know I'm only running a 5K, but since it's a Disney race, I thought I'd put down my "goals."
best case scenario--sub 30 min
what I believe I'm very capable of doing--30-31 min
worst case--33-34 min (but still is better than my last 2 5Ks)

I so want to sign up for the W&D right now, but I need to let my credit card recover first.

Gail--I wouldn't call my running injury free, but I am trying to be better. In fact, I took today off to let my Achilles rest. Two days of pushing it hard on hills and they (well, the R more than L) was screaming last night. It's better today.

MM-Go get me' Tiger!!! Growwwwllllllll! I think you are in a completly different place now with your running and things are going to start happening for you now. :-) Have a very fun trip. Wish I was going !!

DG, hope you and E have a fast recovery!

Nono, I hear ya'. I have been listening to my body more myself. It has a very nice way of telling us "are you freakin' nuts?" Trying to balance it all out is hard. LMK when you figure out the magic formula.

Nice hilly run tonight, ab workout and hand weight workout followed. Managed a few more push ups than ever before. I HATE pushups! DG, I thought of you when I was doing my squats. I have alway meant to mention that is a very smart thing you incorporate into your workouts. I haven't been doing them enough lately and your posts have inspired me to hop back on the squat train. :-)

Beth, I want your life! I want season tickets for Broadway...major pout.

MM- Have a great trip & awesome race, whatever the clock says!

Roz- Very cool I could help in some way. :)

CN- Roz has a point, I could also go for season tickets to 'real' Broadway shows instead of the 'Broadway Series' shows @ Cleveland's Playhouse Square that we do have. Certainly better than nothing, but just not the same! ;)

I went to bed @ 7:30 and woke up with a big headache. Or perhaps jaw ache is more accurate. The night guard I've started wearing to prevent teeth grinding (goes back to dental work I started at the beginning of the year and trying to prevent me from having to get a bunch of crowns!) and my CPAP mask are fighting each other making my jaw get stuck and be VERY painful in the middle! Feeling like I can't win. I bought a kit to get a custom guard made that is supposed to both take care of grinding AND treat sleep apnea, but I haven't taken the molds yet because DW & I have been sick. Gotta' do that... Well, I'm gonna' grab some ibuprofin and head to bed. I might try guard & no mask for a while and see how that goes.

Well, yesterday was "All cross-training, in a row!" So, I did my slideboarding (10 min), then walked (1 mi), yoga (25 min) and then swam (1 hour). Other than waking up dehydrated, I don't feel any worse for wear. :) But all I've done is come downstairs and sit down, so that's not saying much!

DG-Feel better soon!

MM-Good luck at the race, and go get your 5k goals! I know you can do it!:cheerleader:

Roz-they're the touring versions of Broadway shows--I wish I could afford to go to NYC for real Broadway shows 8 times a year! As it is, I get to go once or twice, and we squeeze in as many shows as possible. We have friends that just moved up there, so we're hoping we can stay with them so we can take the money we would have spent on the hotel and see more shows!

Going to try to squeeze in 6 this morning before my uncle's funeral this afternoon. We're going to Philly this weekend for a beer festival and there's really no where to run by our hotel other than on the mill, so thus the need to try to knock out the LR today.

Waiting for PT - knee is hurting again. Starting to wonder if my running career is over :(.

I used to say "stupid knee" - at least now I know it is really the "stupid ankle." If only I hadn't fallen off that ladder seven years ago.

Sorry to be a downer this morning maybe it's the rain?

cloudnut220

John, don't get discouraged. I know with every injury I've ever had (knee, hip, tendons) I'll always have good days and bad days. My knee injury was almost 13 years ago, and it will still get achy on occasion. And it may be the rain in more ways than one--my old injuries tend to hurt more when it's damp. Your PT knows what he's doing--he'll assess the pain and guide you through.

Sorry for the bad day Jrbdad. Like CN said you'll have good days and bad days even as your injuries continue to heal. I think bad days are important too (no comment on taking my own advice) because they prepare you for the unexpected and worst case scenario as well as teach you a lot. And you're a lot more thankful for the good days and moments when they come.

Ditching CPAP last night did wonders for my jaw. Kept waking up way too frquently and have a (sinus?) headache this morning, but a lot better than yesterday. Weather report shows 47 or 48 degrees and rain tomorrow; might try and bank out my planned 6.3 miles outside (in lieu of scheduled 45 min. mill + 22.5 make-up from Tuesday)... :scratchchin: Don't know about tonight. Really want to make up my 45 min. (~4.2 miles) on the mill that I missed yesterday (by shufflign schedule around and just give up on the ellip & weights from not exercising two days this week) if I can get one working tonight. If I can't, I might do my scheduled weights & ellip so I don't have three unplanned days off in a row! We'll see what happens. DW just txted me she wants to go out for Meixican for dinner :eating: so while that starts to digest I can try and play handyman... :fingerscrossed:

Driving past OKW gets me to remembering: it was one year ago I was here for my first half. I'd say I've come pretty far since then!

Indeed you HAVE! Have fun MM for all of us!

John, what type of feedback does the PT give you?

jrbdad
03-04-2011, 04:16 PM
PT - says that I over-pronate worse than anyone they have ever seen - on the ankle that was injured. Not sure it is even correctable. Back to treatments & rest to get rid of pain/inflammation - then will ramp back up slowly, try just walking - maybe elliptical.

They want me to add an insert to my new motion control shoes to see if that will help.

Now that I'm aware of what's going on - I can actually see my knee moving when I walk or run. It follows the ankle, moving to the inside - so I can see how that constant pounding on the inside of my tibia (?) caused the stress fracture. But now, I think that pronounced movement is stressing the muscles/ligaments in and around the knee.

I asked about braces - none of the PTs felt like a brace would help :(.

When I went for the fitting on the new shoes - the young lady there also said I over pronate worse than anyone she's seen - she measured it as over an inch. Funny how my ankle doesn't hurt.

Anyway - probably more than you all wanted to know/hear. ;)

Thanks for all the support.

Another vote for DG to wear his CPAP. If the mask doesn't fit right get a new mask but don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Anyway thanks for the well wishes. This is my third time staying club level (the other two times I actually booked) and I feel the CM are extremely friendly
here.

Nono at first I thought you were trying to hook me up but I guess you were thinking for you ;) No one on club level here for me but I did have a guy run past me 3 times as I was walking from the race back to YC. I thought "I need a shirt stating Single female seeking Disney loving runner." Hehehe.

In honor of DG I wore my shaahts (that's what I call my short shorts and I quickly saw I've really gained too much weight to be wearing them) and in honor of all the other Peacocks my peacock singlet which has seen better days. I had blocked out how curvy a course through HS can be. Oh well. 60 Degrees at race start and sunny.

I started off fast because I figured I'm gonna go hard or not at all. I probably started a little too fast. First mile was 8:53 then I lost half a minute on the second mile but I made most of it up
in the third (and that was with the one "hill" in the race backstage behind ToT). Finished unofficially at 28:46. I haven't run that fast in a year and a half and that was when I was 10 lbs lighter and uninjured. And I feel good physically. When I started feeling tired I focused on my form and that helped.

Into the shower then off to Chefs de France.

JRB- Wow on being the worst over-pronator so many people have seen!

Roz et all- Point taken on CPAP; might need new mask. We'll see- theoretically the new jaw aligning night guard appliance I'm getting can keep my airway open w/o using the machine though. I hope so; I'm having more skin irritation problems and jaw pain lately from wearing the mask. Perhaps I should try going away from a full face one, but when my allergies were worse I couldn't breath well enough through my nose to use a traditional nasal one like they started me with in 2005. There are also those "nasal pillows" style 'masks', but I'm hoping a dental appliance will work since I have to wear one of those now (and I've been told by multiple dentists for years that I should have been using some type of one!). I'll toss my current mask back on tonight, OK?

MM- WTG on the club upgrade! :woohoodance: That has happened to my parents once or twice @ WL over the years... Too bad I was never with them on those trips. ;) GREAT JOB on the race :cheerleader:, and have fun with that "seeking=" shirt. :thumbsup2: LOL re the shorts... :rotfl2:

Friday night: We cracked open the big mill and found the motor drive belt was slipping and fraying. Readjusted the bracket as a stop-gap, and I got in 45 minutes including my full-tilt 1 min. sprint at the end. :) While I was running DW found a repalcement belt from a store in FL on EBay for $11.99 and it is on its way! :D We ended up w/ scratch-made pizza for dinner she also put together while I was running. (Healthier than Mexican; if we went out I would have ordered fried ice cream and eaten way more tortilla chips than I really should :eating:)

Saturday: Ran 6.73 miles outside at 10:10 average pace! :thumbsup2: Weather was mixed with temps right around 50, but feeling colder from wind & rain. Hands were a titch cold (especially at the start) but the rest of me felt pretty good in just shorts & tech-T. Glad I did it while I could; we have snow on the ground today...

Since I can't get to the pool today I think I'll try and lift upper body weights and do Yoga instead tonight. Give my legs a break after running 2 days in a row, and then start w/ my 'normal' plan Monday morning! Some work I was on call for went fine last night and we checked it this morning so I'm off the hook there, church went well, and now it is about tme to wake up DW & start thinking brunch before we head out to see Shrek!

Had some non-injury related setbacks during the winter:

1) We had A LOT of snow where I live plus it was very cold so running outside was damn near impossible.

2) Running inside was impact because my daughter had a lot of snow days which fell on my scheduled training days. This threw my whole schedule out of wack.

3) I was talking to a friend of mine, who is also a curler and has run the W&D 1/2 marathon in the past and he told me that he does very little training during the curling season.

Given those three factors. I've pushed back the re-start of my training to the end of curling season which is only in couple of weeks. I have a big event in Ottawa around St. Patrick's Day then that's it outside of a couple of league games.

We've booked a 1br at Boardwalk during the W&D 1/2 marathon weekend. So, I've committed to go. Just gotta wait for the weather to break and get back out on the road.

The Rozzie's have some PEACOCKING to do!! 5K this morning, and Mr. Roz and I both PR'd and won our AG. I had 22:01, he had 20:37. I do believe this is his first AG win. We got some super cool heavy beer mugs. It is Mardi Gras, and boy what a after party! I gave away my beer tickets and did not touch any food. (pizza, grits, doughnuts, red beans and rice, etc etc) Another record for me. :p

At first I am ashamed to say I was ticked I didn't make it under 22:00, so close and it's such a pain to see the clock ticking away and you are running your guts out. However, I came 1 second behind a girl on my (old) coach's running team. He was calling the finish line and was screaming at her in the microphone to bear down that someone is about to catch her (yes he gets very spirited into the mike LOL) when he looked and saw it was me---well there are a few moments I will thinking about while I am withering away on my death bed and this will be one of those moments. The look on his face! He also called the awards and made a special comment about how much I had improved when he announced my name. It was a big moment for me to say the least. It took away the disappointment of not reaching my goal of a sub 22:00. I think I would have had that goal but for the last 1.5 miles were heading into a fierce north wind of about 20 mph. But no excuses.

I did have a funny moment on the course. I was trying to pace off my racing pal M, you remember the one that holds the state record in about every catergory for her age. (59) I looked to my right and there was wonderkid, this little guy who holds the state record for 10 year olds in the HM in Alabama. I about lost my pace laughing. Hey, look at me, I am running with state record holders! For the record I edged out the 10 year old in the last push. ;) The 59 year old still kicked my arse and came in 4 seconds ahead of me. She wants us to pace together in the big 10K at end of month, I better get my butt out there doing some tempos, that lady is a machine!!

Welcome Back Timothy Mouse! Do you have access to a TM?

Glad to say that my wife is an Oak! All that beer, pizza, grits, red beans, chicken salad etc. and she just stood there in the cold with her water bottle. Didn't mention the oatmeal raisen cookies either. We are a great team...she gave me her beer tickets and I happily obliged. I believe she has 3 Strongbows hidden around here somewhere. :rotfl2:I dont think there's anything out here except for the runways. It's really sad that I don't know more about Philly since it's so close.

Survived the beer festival last night. I actually didn't drink that much, but I can't say the same for the rest of the group! :rotfl2: now no drinking until after the race next week!

Glad you had a good time. Sorry that we didn't get together.....next time don't wait until the day you are leaving to let us know you are going to be in the neighborhood so we can try to set up a mini-meet.

TM- Welcome back; can't wait to see you @ Marathon Weekend!

Awesome job Rozzies!!! :cheerleader: I loved reading that RR - the coach acknowledging you is priceless. :goodvibes:

CN- Glad you survived the trip. :driver:

nono- You managed to post; with all the problems people are having I think that is enough. ;)

My shines and calves aren't happy with me today... Maybe 2 days back to back with one of them outside when I've acclimated to a mill for the past 2 months wasn't extremely bright... :rolleye11: However, I did do my upper body weights and squats. I've done a bunch of stretches / Yoga up & down dogs on and off today for my lower legs. I'll play my planned 39 min. on the mill tomorrow by ear- but will try to motivate to do it or at least do that time on the ellip. :thumbsup2:

I enjoyed Shrek but feel a little guilty since there are lots of things in it that mocked the Mouse. DW thinks I'm nuts to feel loyalty to Disney like that! :silly:

I think it is getting better. I mostly use it on my iPhone & there for awhile, everytime I'd leave the site and come back - I'd have to log in again. But that seems to be fixed - most of the time ;).

Spent some time e-mailing back & forth with Tim about things last week - I know he'd value your input.

Got my superfeet inserts - and - back to PT again today. Pain isn't quite as bad as it has been, but I found some more turmeric :).

Hope you all have an awesome week & that DG is wearing his cpap mask ;).

DisneyGeek

Lisa- I'm also not impressed with the new format. From my perspective, nothing is better and although I'm indifferent about some changes there are others I don't like... (Including many of the new emoticons! ;))

JRB- GL w/ the inserts!

I used my CPAP last night and with a smaller "3 day disposibile" night guard for my teeth. Slept well, better than w/ larger guard with or without mask. However, the little night guards tend to slide out or at least sideways while I sleep. I ended up with one bite tab where it should be and the other side twisted around in a loop and on the outside of my gums on the same side of my mouth as the properly seated one! :rotfl2: It will be VERY interesting to see how the custom made gizmo fits...

My shine splints are still talking this morning. If anything they were WORSE when I first woke up than last night. :( But I've been doing stretches up against the filing cabinet in my cube a few times already this morning (Glad my neighbor across the isle is out of the office today!) and they seem to be getting at least a little better. On the plus side, I'm not really noticing any ITB issues! :thumbsup2: OK, probably just masked by shines, but hey, I'll try and look on a bright side even if it is a bit delusional. Not sure what I'm going to try and do tonight about exercising. Part of me says: Rest you idiot! and the other side says: Try the mill. If it hurts much more than just walking, try elliptical. If that also hurts more, then try watching TV on the couch instead. :p

I'm not loving the new format either...but hey, this is the first time I've replied to something and not had to log in again, so maybe there's hope! Having my own website, I do understand the need to update.

So I ended up doing an Excercise TV video last night called 20 minute sweat. It was pretty good (mostly weight training) and it really did make me sweat!

I also have a question for the racing experts. I have the 5k next Sunday and I know I should probably rest the day before the race (Saturday). Is there any problem with doing 7 miles on Friday? I did 6 this past Friday. I really don't want to lose a LR this week, since I'm trying to build mileage before my trip! Or is building so close to a race just a bad idea? Any ideas/thoughts/advice appreciated!

Rozzie

Beth, you should be fine for your 5k and LR. Good luck!

cloudnut220
03-07-2011, 01:26 PM
Thanks for the advice Roz! It's amazing that six months ago, I never would have wanted to run 7 then race 36 hours later. I feel like I'm a totally different runner.

nono
03-07-2011, 03:54 PM
Take it easy on the 7 miler pace-wise if you're trying to PR in the 5k. I say that even though I would say this is the first training cycle that I can really accurately predict what paces will work for me during training, and hold to them...so don't worry if you can't figure out what's "easy" for you at this point. :)

Mr. Roz
03-07-2011, 04:31 PM
I agree with the two queen Peaocks. Take it easy on the 7 and you will be fine. The 48 hour mark before you race is the key. Wake the legs up a little the day after with a little 2 miler with some strides in there or just take that day off and nail it on race day.

Back from WDW in what I think was one of the best trips I've had there. That's saying a lot, considering I've been feeling somewhat burnt out on the place this past year.

I'm still having lots of problems with the site--mainly with the mobile one. CN I noticed you posted it was asking you to log on again every time you wanted to post. I'm having the same issue--except I'm already logged in so it won't let me do it again (but won't acknowledge that I am in fact logged in to be able to post). Using my laptop is not as convenient as I have to search for wifi.

I'm not sure if it was my Ghosts I wore for the 5K, or the Chacos I wore at the parks after, or just running wonky for some reason, but my R lateral calf (so not really my gastroc or soleus, but more the peroneus muscle head) is extremely sore. Speaking of my Ghosts, I really love them except that the laces on the L foot hits right above my halcius longus tendon, making it sore and inflamed. I've tried changing the lacing pattern but it doesn't help. I'm thinking I may try the normal width (I bought the narrow width) to see if it helps any. I'd hate to have to give up on a good shoe just because of that "side effect."

Gonna try and post a TR about this weekend. . . Wish me luck! ;)

Thanks nono and Mr. Roz. I appreciate your advice! nono, I do think I'm starting to have a problem with easy. As in now that my brain has reset its definition of hard, it doesn't know where easy is anymore!

I had a really rockin tempo today, despite the fact that I got a late start because I worked late. I'm just feeling so good it makes me nervous. I'm knocking on every piece of wood I pass!

MM--Can't wait for the TR!

MM- Glad you had a great trip, GL w/ the Ghosts, and I'm also looking forward to the TR!

CN- Hope you can find 'easy' and have a good LR & awesome race!

39 min. of intervals on the mill felt OK. Not really any worse than walking at the office. In fact, running @ 6 MPH actually felt better than my final sprint OR walking @ 4 MPH for my warm up or 2.5 cool down. Maybe I should just always run unless I'm seated or standing still... ;) Hopefully I won't regret the workout in the morning! :fingerscrossed: :p

Rozzie

CN, the best thing you can do for yourself for the race is just race it hard. Badaahbing. There is your new 5K pace. Then what I usually do is add 2 minutes to get a nice base/easy pace to that. It's not exact science but it gives you an idea what you should be running on your easy days. One of the worst things you can do with running is run hard every day. Leave the juice in the tank, and just "tap" into it in training on your tempo days. Floor it on races. I love racing!! I used to hate 5Ks but now that I am getting better at them they are kinda fun. Misery, but it's over quick. Not like Marathons, where things tend to last "a little" longer. ;-)

Speaking of Marathons, my virtual training partner in GA posted this on FB tonight. I Love it!!

At mile 20 I thought I was dead.
At mile 22 I wished I was dead.
At mile 24 I knew I was dead.
At mile 26.2 I realized I had become too tough to kill.

MM, looking forward to your report! I am concerned about your shoes for you. I told myself if I PR'd any races this month I would allow myself to purchase a pair of Chacos. Been wanting a pair for over a year now. Hope it all feels better and maybe was just a freak thing? It almost seems like it would be the Chacos you were walking around in, as I can't imagine a pair of shoes having that much residual effect just after one short race. Oh wait, never mind. I did 3 miles in my Frees and was crippled for 3 days.

Took today off, had 6 miles on the books. Will have to adjust around my days off. Just dead tired today. Off work tomorrow for Mardi Gras and plan on 7 plus abs, arms, and possibly some new yoga DVD I got.

I was FREEZING to death and went to the trunk of my car and grabbed all available gear. I was the envy of a few people with my space blanket LOL. The temp was only in the 40s, but with 20mph N wind on the water we were all freezing. The after party though had most of the runners drunk within a hour and dancing to the live DJ, the sober ones still cont. freezing (read me!).

Okay, getting myself pumped up. I have a huge 10K at end of month--I am sure ya'll might remember this 10K as being the "big one" every year that we do. Several 1000 runners do it and it's a invited event with Kenyan, Ethopian, etc runners. I have a chance of cracking the top 10 of my age group. (luckily the invited women are younger ;-)) Last year, I had to work but there were over 200 people just in my AG. I will need to PR to meet this goal, and it will be tough to do--but I am here by publicly laying it out there that this is hereby my goal for all the Peacock world to witness. If I make it, I get the Chacos, if not, byebye chacos.

7 miles done this morning, now it's time for round 2 of fitness work. Hour of core work. Which I will do a hour of core work at least 3x weekly before this race. I will also not put any non clean food item in my mouth til' race day. I will do a hour of the hard arse yoga video a week. I will sleep more. I will do everything I can to make it. If not, I know that I did my very best--and sometimes that will have to be good enough. However, until the day comes, it's GAME ON!!!!!!

For the kick in the butt I need, I am posting this race photo from Sunday and almost catching the racing team member. (black and red uniform she is wearing, not weird dude) Seize the moment!

Beth, too early to worry about where you are staying. It's post-season, so not generally a problem! I am hoping that one of our neighbors who occasionally rents will cough up some keys for a very reasonable price. Just have to wait until they return so we can see what's up.

OK, recipe:

This is for a 2 lb. or L loaf in the Panasonic SD-YD250 (L is their medium size). They much prefer (admonish in several places) that the flour be weighed instead of measured by volume, so I do weigh. I'll include the alternate volume measurements, but I haven't cooked with them.

This is a regular, everyday, bread, for sandwiches, toast, or like us tonight, because I didn't get the hamburger buns made, it was a bun replacement. ;)

Bread Flour 12 1/4 oz (or 2 11/16 c)
Spelt Flour 6 oz (or 1 c)
Salt 2 tsp
dry milk 2 TBSP
butter 2 TBSP
sugar 1 3/4 TBSP
milk 1 1/2 c (I used 1% today)
dry yeast 1 1/4 tsp
chia seed 2 TBSP
rosemary 1 - 1 1/2 TBSP

Use your machine's basic, or white bread setting. If you will mostly be toasting the bread, I'd suggest 1 TBSP of rosemary, as we noticed it is perfumed delicately with the rosemary when lightly toasted. If you are using it as sandwich bread and want to really notice the rosemary, I'd go with the larger dose of rosemary.

I LOVE THIS, Rozzie!!!!!!!

I notice it's y'all without kids worrying about what you look like, as if that makes you fast. I'll give you my kids to babysit for a weekend, and trust me, you'll be amazed at what your reflection looks like in the morning. You'll look 100, but you'll have been through some of the best cross-training of your life. :p

Roz, excellent form in the chute...you'll get there!

Oh, so now you're going to start calling me Grandma Gail :(.....59 isn't old!!!!

I just knew nono and Gail would comment on the lady that looked 100, LOL!! :rotfl2: I don't know though, I think said woman could have been 23 or 24 and had Rozzie! Heck, I could be Rozzie's mom and had her at the ripe old age of 15! Is that about right, Roz? :w00t:

John, I know, and I think that's why I'm so reluctant! It's just refreshing to hear honesty, since I think my whole family is downplaying any "costs" of kids to try to push me over the edge.

How is PT going this week?

Beth-

Wouldn't trade them for anything. DW & I were married for 7 years before we had kids. I was 30 when we had our first. We were living large - but one after another - life has just gotten better. Harder - but better. DS15 just got his learners permit and will be driving before we know it (alone) - that will make some things easier, bu we will worry more.

PT is going good. Back to having much less pain - I'd guess that I'm about 62.5% ;). Have an appointment first thing this morning.

Y'all have a great day!

John- your response makes me smile and panic (j/k!) because 30 is right around the corner. But we'll figure out what works for us, I'm sure.

Good luck in PT. Glad to hear it's going the right direction!

Frankly, your family doesn't get a vote. Will they be there to deal with the all night teething, when you still have to get up and function in the morning? Day, after day? Will they counsel and comfort your dh when he's ready to throw in the towel 6 mo. in because he had NO IDEA how grouchy he is when he doesn't sleep, but he feels it necessary to help out because his wife suddenly looks 100 when she gets out of bed in the morning?!! :w00t:

I believe in a well-informed choice. There are benefits, but believe me, it's a lot of investing first, and depending on the personalities involved, it can be a breeze or it can be a hurricane.

Hey look folks, I finally figured out how to mulitquote on new system. Do I get a star by my name or something?

You'd probably have to PM Tim for that one... ;)

I also know what you mean about airfare creeping up; that certainly happened to us while I waited for the Mouse to announce SWW dates. Oh well, live and learn! :silly: Still ended up buying before formal announcement but my guess was right so it all worked out. :thumbsup2:

Got some more posts to catch up w/ on thread but I have a mtg. in 3 minutes so that'll have to wait.

My planned 45 min. on mill last night went fine again! :D Hopefully no issues w/ weights & ellip tonight. :fingerscrossed: Shines are feeling a lot better the majority of the time now.

Didn't want Roz to feel left out, so I thought I'd play multi-quote with my catch up post! :p

rosemary 1 - 1 1/2 TBSP

If you will mostly be toasting the bread, I'd suggest 1 TBSP of rosemary, as we noticed it is perfumed delicately with the rosemary when lightly toasted. If you are using it as sandwich bread and want to really notice the rosemary, I'd go with the larger dose of rosemary.

 Yuck to that part! I'm not technically allergic since I keep breathing, but let's just say I can't keep Rosemary down in anything but TINY amounts. Same thing happens with non-dairy creamer... But for those who like it, more power to ya'!

nono--not a good ad for kids!! LOL!

But it was validation for why DW & I like being DINKs... ;)

JRB- Glad to hear PT is going well!

DG, do you do toe taps for your shins? While you are sitting at your desk, tap your toes fast like to music x100 times each leg. Your shins will burn but this does wonders when my shins are achey. Usually it shuts them up in a day or two with icing too.

I have very exciting news, going to Disney World!! :thumbsup2:

I'll have to try that; I've been stretching my ankles and holding toes up as high as I can ~30 seconds w/ heels on ground several times a day at my desk but not taps...

May 7-9! I am crashing at a fellow Peacock's room for EE Challenge. ;) I am so excited I can't sit still! I loooooove AK, love EE, and now I will finally be able to check this race out. I hope I don't break my neck at the obstacle portion. I have not a very good track record with that sort of stuff. Staying a extra night (Sunday night) and plan on hitting WF in the morning and driving back home. It's crazy to drive 8 hrs down, stay 60 hrs, drive home. Oh well. We have a Doc out that week so I got approval on it. Just found out! Think I snagged the last standard view at AKV available for Sunday night at lunch break today. Oh and F&G, I haven't been to F&G in 3 or 4 years. Yahhoooie! :yahoo:

ETA: Lost another 2 lbs! Can't even remember the last time I weighed under 130. High School? Tosca says I will slow down weight loss when my body gets to where it wants to be. I have told myself if I get down to 125 this summer (my stopping point) I am buying a bikini. Haven't bought one of those since high school either. Running is going well too, had a super hard interval workout this morning. Having the energy for the runs and putting in at least 1800 kcal a day. It's all just how I am stacking the food and how clean it is is finally letting me break the barrier.

So, when will the bikini be debuted??? You know you'll make it. You gonna run A.C. in it? No one would think twice if you did!

Trying to decide it I'm doing the Ocean Drive Marathon or the Ocean Drive 10 Miler or sitting it out. I thought I was sitting it out, but on my way to church tonight in Cape May, the traffic control signs were already up saying "Expect delays Mar. 27 for the OD Marathon/10 Miler." That's better than any marketing they pay for...it totally pulled at my heartstrings! :cloud9:

So, at the moment, I'm thinking of practicing my AC pace for the first 20 miles for 10 miles (8 min miles)...and then just running 8 more supported miles and ending my personal training run at my parents' friends house, which is along the marathon route, right about mile 18, which is what is scheduled for the weekend. Thoughts?

Hey, neither, just wondering! I have a couple of Aqua Terra suits from Land's End (boy shorts) that I run in on the beach in the summer. I definitely would consider wearing one if it were a warm day in October...but heck, I'm only a pacer that day!

Roz-I'm super jealous that you're going for EE! And to MM too (I think she's the other person, right?). I've always thought that race looked super fun. Too bad I'm out of points :(

The girl on the TM next to me last night had on a pair of exposers. She was tiny and could pull them off, but when she bent over to stretch her hammy...well, it was a good thing those shorts had a liner! She was running in just a sports bra and the shorts, so I doubt she cared. As for running in a bikini, that would have to be the sturdiest bikini bottom ever! Mine never seem to be able to withstand walking without shifting, I can't imagine running in them! But I would consider running in shorts and a sports bra, and I'm starting to prepare myself for the idea for this hot training summer!

Roz- AWESOME on EE- can't wait for a RR! :thumbsup2:

I just want to go on record saying I am NOT going to race or train in a bikini... ;)

However, for Warrior Dash I'm contemplating dressing up in Jedi Knight style leggings and a tunic (but no robes) but still wear running shoes. I'd have E hold my (yet to be purchased) lightsaber but I'd bring it for pre & post photos. How crazy does the team think that would be? I just keep pondering their encouraging warrior costumes and a Jedi w/ a horned warrior helmet & finishers medal after the race amuses me, and I'm already planning to buy make most of that stuff for my MNSSHP Jedi Mickey costume in September... I'll just need to make sure those parts are made out of a washable (and easily sown if torn!) fabric. :silly:

On another race garb note- Are we going to do a new style of team logo shirts in the near future (perhaps with that skull peacock Mr. Roz is using) before the WDW full? If so and the logo is available/decided upon I might try and get one before my 10 miler next month. Otherwise I'll wear my good old one I have so far to date.

My sinuses & teeth (related I think) are bugging me today, but I still plan on hitting the mill. I didn't do weights last not but did the rest of my plan: crunches, ellip, squats. I got pressed for time and since I lifted Sunday but missed over a week I thought the extra days off might be a reasonable choice.

Pretty good actually. I'm just hoping everything goes well on race day :fingerscrossed: I really want to run today and tomorrow, but I'm trying to take it easy, so I'm just going to go for 7 tomorrow (as long as my running route isn't flooded out after the monsoon we're having today!) and do some cross training today.

This is probably the most prepared I've ever been for a race. My running pace has dropped considerably, and I can hold a pace that I thought I would have died at before--it's not fast for you speed demons, but it's fast for me, and I will catch you one day! But yet I'm still nervous that I won't be able to pace myself properly to PR. I know I've reached the point where I have to trust in the training...but yeah...

Your mind is playing tricks on you. YOU ARE READY! Just have a plan for your first mile. Take it easy, but not too easy. (ha!) You don't want your first mile to be your fastest. Do you wear a Garmin? Keep track of your pace and it will be fine. I find that when I first started doing 5Ks I either started out waaay too fast or waay too conservative. Just have a goal. If it's a sub 30, do your first mile in 10:00, then 9:50, then 9:45. (just as a example)

YOU GOT THIS! (oh one more thing, no more DOWN talk of yourself--of course you are going to speed up!!!)

This would be more impressive if she were barefoot. ;)

Had a great swim practice tonight -- 1:1 coaching! Most of the team is in Florida (hey this is NJ, it's a state law that residents must travel to FL at least once a year). After warm-up, he tailored the whole hour to me, and wow, what a workout! Major progress tonight. In between sets, we talked running. :) And, we're both of the opinion that swimmers who run gain running benefit from swim practice in the training mix. Marathon & Beyond's recent article called swimming a "dud" of a cross-training for runners. I definitely think that's true since most runners aren't former competitive swimmers.

I've run in the Ghosts since December and never remembered a problem, so I think it's probably the Chacos. Oh well. My sister will enjoy having them. Unless. . . What size do you wear? I've only worn them twice (both at WDW).

Trust nono to add perspective to our lives. I feel mine has been busy lately, but I know that I'm single and without kids and really have no cause to complain.

WooHoo Roz! See, my sister (who is very muscular but larger than you) has no problem strutting around in a string bikini. I'm letting her rub off on me to a certain degree and making the mental choice to be more confident. I think she can pull them off so well because she is confident. I bought a two piece (non-tankini two piece) around the time of the ToT when I weighed my lowest, expecting to lose more. Needless to say, I've never worn it. . . YET! My goal is 30 lbs before Akron. Already down just over 3 lbs eating clean this week--but I wonder if some of that is just water weight, as I don't think my clothes fit much better.

nono--got my plane tix. See you in a month! (And I'd better see you!!!)

7 done. Flooding only in one spot, but there was trash all over the place from where the water had been. What's happening in Japan, Hawaii and the west coast puts it in perspective. I have a friend that lives near Pebble Beach and his house is under a tsunami warning, and he's seriously freaked out.

Looks like I'll have a more regular training schedule--and work schedule--I just got an email saying effective immediately, all of our overtime is cancelled. I won't mind leaving work as scheduled!

Alright time to stretch and go pickup my packet for Sunday. The goal--don't buy anything at Charm City Run, where the pickup is!

nono--got my plane tix. See you in a month! (And I'd better see you!!!)

Well, the plan was to run so fast that I was just a blur.....

But, I think the cheer sections are going to be where I'm gasping for air, so we'll see each other. And also aferwards for a shot I hope! LOL :drunkard:

Mr. Roz or Rozzie, can you guys give me your start date and position for training for A.C., if you are using the framework of Brain Training? I seem to recall I committed to following the same path for training, so I don't want to go filling in my spreadsheet too far past Boston with my own ideas and end up out=of-sync to pace Rozzie. :oweye:

MrR- I can't blame the guy in that picture for looking; had I been there I would have been too!

Mill time was fine last night. Ball of my right foot (just behind the base of my toes, mostly centered) started hurting out of the blue yesterday morning though. Not really sure what is going on there. No new shoes or anything for quite a while. I think it was after I tried doing some "toe walking" that I found online as being good for shins. There doesn't seem to be anything visibly odd about the area. Something to just keep paying attention to I guess.

CN- You'll do great, and I guess I'm happy for you about the OT. GL w/ the taxes. I'm waiting for my refunds. Plan to pay off my BLT loan once they come in. :) Not as exciting as even more points would have been, but every so often I need to be responsible, especially since E's side work got slashed 2 months ago and is teetering between a possible (at least partial) comeback and outright elimination, so I have to budget for nothing there and then be happy when we got something. ;) One annoying thing; our city uses a group tax collection company and they won't give you your refund until after you pay at least your first quarter's estimated local taxes. Normally the payment is due at the end of April (they use quarter dates, not Federal tax dates just to keep things even more interesting), but why would I want to wait an extra month to get back the money I already had to pay them? That prepayment was direct debited from my checking account the business day after I filed electronically, but no refund yet. Why the heck won't they just let you credit part of your refund toward next year's taxes and request the remainder back in cash? That bugged me, but at least it was under $200 that they required me to pre-pay now...

Our rains turned back to snow by us. Drive in to work took about twice as long as usual, and DW slid into a curb and said there wasn't any damage she could find but she wonders if she'll need a wheel alignment. Always something... But no injuries, so that is the important thing.

My plan is to do crunches, weights, ellip & squats after work tonight, then tomorrow is targeted for a long mill session (a bit over 8 miles). Hopefully all my body parts will cooperate for both and I might even survive the time change and make it to the pool Sunday!

Take care everyone! :thumbsup2:

Nono will post the dates this weekend.

Cool -- couple weeks to recover from Boston. I'll probably have to be Level 2 just because of the reality of my life. Where in the program are we starting? Week 1?

I'm thinking my Tues/Thurs swimming will fit in well as I was looking over Level 2 today. I know I'll be looking forward to Mondays! :)

I did my new yoga dvd tonight. It's cool as it's full of express target areas, or full body workouts. 10 different sessions. I did a 10 minute ab segment and then a 18 min express full body pilates. I thought of Nono, as the pilates one was a lot of swimming moves. Pretty cool stuff and it was not like it was so exhaustive, but at the same time a great mini workout.

So now I'm back to thinking about what I want to do on Marathon weekend next year. I'm reading elsewhere that there's going to be a special inaugural medal for the relay...and that space will be VERY limited. Hmm. Just talked to Noel, and I think he would really like for us to do the half together, so the question is should I try to do goofy (or would that kill me) or should I try to find a relay partner. Or should I just tell Noel too bad, I'm doing the marathon. I just love the idea of crossing the finish line with him!

Perhaps shorts (shaahts) are more important in a short race. Maybe race length should relate to inseam length? :confused24: [Note to self: Watch more female sprinters... :covermouth: ;)]

Sorry you had a rough night though... Hope the run goes well. :fingerscrossed:

Lisa- Continued GL on the job front. When my company was sold last year we later found out a certain % of employees had to come through or the sale would be stopped, so you just might be onto something with the cash. I wish we would have been retained that aggressively though! :silly:

CN- I'd probably try and do the half together & then do the marathon relay. Goofy sounds neat but I want at least a few fulls under my belt before I'd attempt it. I love things like the Roz's crossing together and what not, and I wouldn't skip that opportunity if it presented itself. I keep trying to encourage E and I've told her many times I'll stick with her if she wants for the DL half if she does indeed do it in 2012. As long as I don't get swept and I get my Coast to Coast medal it'll all be good. But I can understand if you have your heart set on doing the Mickey in 2012 and the relay just won't cut it for ya...

Last night I bought some Champion mesh shorts w/ an 8" or so inseam from Kohl's and ordered some new Under Armor compression shorts to go with them. So I'm heading back to something more tried and true for my training runs! :rolleye11:

I really like the front of mine but it is a XXL and I really want to get an XL made up, and lately I'm leaning toward doing it for the Cleveland 10 Miler I'm in April 23rd. However, if I get a new Peacock shirt made up I also want to wear it for the Full next year! So if a number of us will be sporting the MrR Peacock Skull, I'm gunna' get that.

Please give me your votes ASAP so I can get an order in and hopefully have Running Bannna (http://runningbanana.com/) print it in time. :fingerscrossed:

Beth, Pleazzzzze. I have a finish line photo from Princess 09 that makes your pic look like Nike Ad material. Mr Roz and I crack up about that photo all the time. It's so bad I think I deleted it from the mainframe of the computer. Let's just say it's the picture that made a huge lightbulb go off. Not only was I fat and had horrible form, I was sucking wind and needed to get in better shape. :blech:

14 miler was okay today. Perfect weather but Achilees decided to screw with me today. Had to bypass a lot of hills we usually try to hammer out. About to go start another yoga dvd and pamper it today. So weird how out of the blue it acts up. :(

Nono, the Boston countdown is on! You know I am getting a pic made in your jacket in Oct. ;) Hey if you can't make it there, have fast friends who can!! We are actually starting program a week earlier than first reported by Mr. Roz. We negotiated a off week so the weekend we are down in Orlando for my bday we don't have to do a huge LR then drive home again. We are making it a free week, where we get up and run whatever we feel like as long as it's around 35 miles for the week. What I am planning on doing is bouncing between level 2 and 3, with mostly being in level 2.

Lisa, I know I have said it before--but I will say it again. THIS SUCKS! I can't imagine dealing with all that plus normal life stressors. Are you thinking of taking the other job if they offer it?

DG, let us know what you decide on ordering of shorts. We are clueless when it comes to zipart and things like that. (think Forrest Gump)

Beth, forgot to add my thoughts on your marathon debate. Do you think Noel is serious about training and doing it? Maybe this will be the push he needs? It's a hard decision. It is very fun to cross the line with your SO/spouse/partner. I know in a way I am kinda sad about not doing Goofy, but excited about rocking it out with Coach Nono. The money we will save in registration fees will help pay for Scott's V&A bday dinner--so it's a decision that made the most sense for us.

Speaking of dinners, DG, when you can, PM me what's going on with the banquet. Or if there is no news, PM when there is some new activity on the planning. I appreciate you and E doing all that you have done with all that.

I've been really concentrating on form lately--especially leaning forward. That automatically makes me go faster because I'm not fighting gravity, but letting it do more work for me. I'm also working to pick my legs up more by moving more at the hip, particularly bringing them back more. I have to say I was worried about creating a longer stride with my ITB issues, but it has actually felt like less work (once I get into a rhythm) than fighting gravity and trying to minimize my stride. Plus, I remmember Chi Running guy talking about how kids naturally have a great stride. Well, this kid may have been too old for me to follow, but early in the race when I was starting to get tired, I found myself behind a kid maybe around 11 years old. His feet were almost coming up to his behind when he ran, so I decided to try and emulate him more. My hips need to be doing more of the work. I really think that's my whole problem--weak hips and glutes. I've been trying to strengthen them more, but I've been somewhat lax the past week or two.

As for taking pictures, I think my whole goal in running is just to look as dorky as possible. So I'll wear the bright yellow reflective vest or the knee high neon pink compression socks with teeny shorts. Then when the photog is visible, I smile and stick out my arms and somehow it works. I think it's like in theatre--you have to be somewhat exaggerated so that it looks normal to the people in the back row. I think I just look goofy (but happy, so it's okay), but I do appreciate everyone's comments.

MM, have you thought about getting Matt Fitzgeralds book Brain Training? It really seems like you could really get deep into his form training. I am not exaggerating when I say that book really was a turn in the road for me regarding form and speeding up.

Butt kick drills are great to do after running to fire up your glutes. I also have weak hips, but trying everything I can lately to correct that. (more yoga, squats with weights, etc) It's amazing how important strong hips are in running. I would dare say it makes or breaks you. (or should I say makes or breaks me!!)

Well that's fine because I could put a float week in when we go in early September. So we'll be out of sync for about 3 weeks and then back on the same schedule. I like to think of mine as Level 2 + Not-Active Recovery swims. The only way to justify having my swimming in the mix is to fit it into "Active Recovery" mode (since swimming doesn't fit Matt's other two cross-training conditions in Brain Training). Problem is, the way Coach is working us, and the way I've taken back to the water and getting more powerful, it's about double what Matt suggests at a Level 2. But then again, it is only swimming. :p It's not like it's real training.

Okay I just ordered Brain Training. Since my marathon relay team for Baltimore is pretty close to falling apart and I like the plan of virtually training with you all, I'm going to check it out and let you know if I'm in. I really like the idea of a fall marathon. It would take some of the pressure/planning off Disney. It also jives a bit better with my current schedule.

If I did the half with Noel at Disney, it would be a slow half. I expect he would do something like a 12mm (or maybe a bit slower pace) so it wouldn't really be racing for me. I would do it with him more so we could be together, and to help encourage him for the tri he's planning to do next April. As far as doing the relay...well I don't have a partner. And seeing how well the Baltimore relay team is going, yeah...

Mr. Roz--how about I get it blown up, and then Noel can ride in front of me on a bike while I LR? Good motivator.

MM-I've also been working on form recently. And it's really helping. I've been a bit lax on the hip strength/PT, and I'm feeling it! No good!

I think it's like in theatre--you have to be somewhat exaggerated so that it looks normal to the people in the back row.

But what if you are the tech Geek who is generally already in the booth BEHIND the back row? :silly: Maybe that is part of why being "onstage" and getting ym pic snapped while trying to run seems so weird and foreign to me... :scratchchin:

Got on the mill and did my 92 minutes of intervals. Did some more walking than planned in the final 19 minutes cause' I was getting wiped out, but including WU & CD I bagged exactly 9 miles. :D Also learned something interesting: When our TM hits 100 minutes, it automatically STOPS! :scared07: But it retains miles & calories so I just have to hit a speed button and it resumes. Just something to be careful about when the time comes... I wonder what it will do if it hits 10 miles? I know that @ 1000 kcals it drops to 000 but then keeps counting (so at the end of today's workout it read 529 but *I* know it meant 1529. Conveniently I think I can figure out to the nearest thousand how much I burned pretty easily! :rolleye11:)

DW was googling and looking + pressing on my right foot and we think it might be flexor tendinitis I kicked off Thursday morning. I'm icing my foot for the second time post run now. It usually only hurts when I flex, and actually remains worse when walking than running. Always something. I'm choosing NOT to take it as a sign about perhaps not doing the full in Jan. The shin splints early this week and now my ticked off tendon are just training costs. As long as I get them out of the way NOW, before the races I have coming up its all good. :thumbsup2:

Got a few more posts to catch up on, just wanted to toss that out there so far.

PS- Roz, I PMed you before I finished writing this.

Beth, I think you would gain tons from Brain Train. I am glad you are considering it a option! I am very much liking your AC debut too. I think you will find it fun to share Noel's accomplishments in the relay. I admire your ability to scale down your expectations of the weekend to include him.

MM, do you remember what Matt said he changed his mind on? It is funny to read several of his books in a row. I dusted off his book Nutrition for Runners or whatever it's called. He changed his mind on several things from that book to brain train timeline. I think he is a very flexible person that is always in discovery mode and when he gets something "new" into his veins he writes about it. As with everything with running, I take some of his stuff as the gold standard, and some other of his stuff as "does not apply to me" column. For example, I know he talked about running dehydrated was a good training tool at times and that plain does not work for me. I have taught my body however to require less water than before, but believe in being hydrated well before my run even begins. On the other hand, I have taken his glycogen depleted workout theory to heart as I believe I have gained a lot in this dept. Needing less fuel in training, and responding to increased fuel in races. But some folks might find the opposite works for them. I just like reading his ideas, he really covers the gray areas of running well. We just have to figure out which side of the fence works best for us.

What does work for me his how he plans out his training and different levels with pacing goals. Before I committed myself to BT last summer, I just had "run fast" "run slower" to go by. I like his concentrated specific endurance pacing training. I feel like it has helped me discover what I should be doing in 5Ks, 10Ks time wise. Until I ran those paces, I had never would allow myself to believe I could race at those paces he said I could do. Goes back to the mind/brain train--and I am the most MENTAL nutcase out there!

So saying all that, I think it's just one of those things that you either like or don't like.

DG, don't let these setbacks scare you away from the Full. Heck, I certainly don't! (leg covered in ice as I type LOL) As I told myself today when I was getting cranky about my calf, it's better to condition the body now to upped training then trying to condition it during the actual program next month. That's what base building is all about! Getting used to the strain of training. Hope you feel better. I have had that flexor tendonitis before, just lots of ice and downdogs. It gets better, PROMISE!

correction--sharing in Noel's accomplishments would be for the half, and then I might think about running the relay, if I could find a partner. But since i'm guessing everyone I know is running the full...yeah...I may not have any luck with that!

Thanks for all of your encouragement on brain training. I'm already doing a bit of brain training myself by just telling myself to just suck it up more mentally during workouts. Because it's my brain holding me back, not my body.

Okay, so I went back to the book and wanted to correct some of the things I said. First, Fitzgerald writes about Brain Training in the Preface, not the Introduction. Second he writes "now and again I discover errors in my previous beliefs or I simply change my mind about past ideas. Sometimes I go so far as to wish I had never written some of the ariticles and books I've written." At this point he doesn't specifically point out Brain Training--that comes a couple of paragraphs later:

"I believe this books marks a culmination. It certainly contradicts things I have written in the past, not least in 'Brain Training for Runners' which I now view as a sort of rough draft of the present volume. . ." blah blah blah several sentences about the power of the brain and then new research "it suggests that the best possible way to improve over the long term is to run almost completely by feel." And a couple of paragraphs later: "Previously, I tried to identify a universal 'best way to train' to harness the full power of the brain. But the most common feature in the training of the most successful runners is not a particular method but a reliance on mind-body communication to learn which methods work best for the individual, to chose the right workout to do each day, to pace optimally through hard workouts and races, to push through performance barriers, and so forth." (which I think compliments Dean Karnazes' saying of "Listen to everyone but follow no one.")

I hope that helps. I do have to admit I've put the book aside temporarily while I read 2 other books--one on dealing basically with food addiction and the other on gardening (because we break ground at the church's community garden in 2 weeks), but I am looking forward to getting back to it. One chapter farther along in the book sounds particularly interesting: "The Gift of Injury" since I am beginning to see how injury can be a blessing. The next chapter also sounds promising: "Anger, Fear, and Speed," though it's probably not what those 3 words mean to me.

13 miles in 2:10:36 tonight...caught the sunset over Sunset Lake (not as easy to do as it sounds based upon trying to run 13 miles on a 5 mi island and not crossing a bridge). Delightful! I ran it easy easy easy, but my first 5 were speedier than anticipated, even coming back into a stiff wind (that weather.com said didn't affect our temps at all :covermouth: ).

The Run preface, and frankly a whole lot of the book, is available via "Look Inside" on Amazon.

I would want to read Brain Training first, but I'm anal like that. With certain iterative authors, I like to follow the peeling back of the onion.... :thumbsup2:

BTW, while I was out running, while not daydreaming about a new vehicle, I realized I get a frickin' 6 day rest before I have to train for A.C. Harumppph.

So I think this is the book being referred to as the latest by Fitz, right? http://www.amazon.com/RUN-Mind-Body-Method-Running-Feel/dp/1934030570/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1299999490&sr=1-2 I must admit the title sounds very interesting to me...

Roz- Thanks for the vote of confidence, & I totally agree! :)

nono- Sounds like a great run. And your easy is faster than my better than hoped half marathon debut... ;)

I need to head to bed. Funny- in the last 30 seconds while typing this my clock says an hour passed! Don't forget to change your clocks everyone!!!

Can't I be grumpy about something? :p Actually, it's grump-transference. By accident yesterday, I think we ran into the vehicle we really want to get as our next vehicle...

But what we like about it isn't available in the used models...and we just spent like a billion dollars to get our other car fixed....but it would be a great vehicle as the kids grew and perfect for road trips to WDW and to races as I try to pick up more of my 50 states...And we don't have the money budgeted for it....but now I want to figure out how to get it before our Sept. trip....AAAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!

Anyway, went to bed at (time-adjusted) 1 a.m. and am up at 6...no nap yesterday either....so I think I'll take Renee to the beach and strip down and soak my legs in the ocean, which is about 43F rght now.
