I wonder about trying a "non-stability" shoe for my running and see how that works for me. I know I (at least historically) have been an over pronater, but now that I actually run regularly do I still need to try and have my shoes correct for that? :scratchchin:

Have you ever had a gait analysis done? Like I said, even AFTER I had one done and was told I overpronated, the doc and PT DID NOT want to correct for it until I started having serious, sudden, it hurt to walk tendon pain. And if my strenghtening goes well, the doctor thinks I may not need the insoles forever. I'm no longer wearing them in regular shoes.

Have you ever had a gait analysis done?

I had some orthodics made while I was in college and wore them for a while, but I don't remember if they did a full blown gait analysis and even if they did a lot may have changed since then. Other than that I've just been looked at a few times in shoe stores and been told I was fairly neutral when walking but over-pronated some when I ran, so I was steered toward a support shoe. Weight may also factor in, I dunno... :confused24:

I'm looking at a clearance Saucony ProGrid Guide 3 right now; it is still a support shoe but I'm curious to try the brand. :silly: One odd thing; Shoefitr on RW says I should go for an 11, but doesn't specify if an 11 D will work despite my using a 11.5 2E for my fav. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 9 reference shoe...

Anyone know if Shoefitr takes into account the shoe's width (D, 2E, 4E, etc.) in its recommendations, or if it just kinda' ignores that and assumes you will pick the same one in the new shoes? :scratchchin:

Mini-taper starts now! I only have 1.5 mi walking uphill to do tomorrow, and then it's pure rest until race day! I can use it. What a steep run-up.

Now if I can keep my calf connected to its bone. That'd be good...:D

:D Just for the record, I'm not against neutral shoes. Neutral = :thumbsup2: in my world. Neutral makes my heart sing. :cloud9: Motion control and stability (for the masses) gives me the willies!

(Just using lots of smilies to see if we get a last post out of Mr. Roz before he goes international).

 Hey It worked.

Way behind here. Just trying to tie up so many loose ends before I leave. Valentines weekend is only our busiest all year and I have to prepare and plan all that Plus trying to get things together.

Nono thanks for the advice on the trip. I should get my sleep in order by then.

We are supposed to have a 2 hour break each day from 3-5. I plan on getting at least 5-7 miles in around the Tuscan Farmhouse and vineyards. The Rocca Della Machie is in the heart of Tuscany and somewhat off to itself. Lots of rolling hills and such. Look forward to hitting those hard.

I have manged to get a little tendon soreness in my left foot. I am no longer ignoring it and taking it to the Doc tomorrow. I plan on dropping it off there. No way I'm taking a sore foot to Italy with me this week.

John, CN, Nono, DG, and others with shoe issues: I am a former specialty running store manager. If possible, you should find small, independent stores that employ knowledgable runners to fit you with the proper shoes. All types of feet require all types of shoes, so I think there is definitely a need for motion control, stability, and neutral shoes.

If you're curious about whether your shoes are the right kind for you, look at the bottoms. In the forefoot, you should be wearing directly up the center of the sole. If you wear to the outside, you underpronate and may need less support. If you wear to the inside, you overpronate and may need more support. Hope that helps! :goodvibes:

Oh, and almost everybody wears the outside edge of the heel; that is where your foot strikes. :thumbsup2:

nono- Yeah, I also vote for keeping things attached! :thumbsup2:

MrR- GL w/ everything & hope that foot drop off works for you. ;)

SIS- Thanks; I think I've been good on my stability shoes, but I will double check the ones I've got some significant miles on soon... :silly:

So I didn't get my shots until after 3, didn't leave work until after 7:30, and was late to start the net I run. Less than ideal night. Finally ate some dinner after all that and this became a rest day. My hope is to go to bed NOW and run tomorrow morning since I'm busy tomorrow night. More important to me that I get my running days in than my elliptical or swims anyhow, so I decided to prioritize!

I didn't order any shoes but I did grab 2 new pairs of running shorts off Running Warehouse that they had on sale. Truth be told, I need the shorts a lot more right now anyway; I've got two pairs of shoes from Christmas on deck that I've each only run in once for <5 miles so far! (I'm still waiting for me to wear down some of my others a bit more before the new ones go into active rotation...)

Ha! It's a good bet and I am willing to side with you. Especially now the miminal shoe craze is in full swing. (which is a good craze...) I been in shoe hell past couple weeks, everytime I try to get out of my precisions, another shoe messes with my legs. OF course new Precisions are out now, and in describing them they said "more cushioning". :oweye: That's what I liked about them, they were lightweight very neutral trainers with hardly any cushion. :oweye: :oweye: I got one pair left on top of closet. I will probably hoard those as long as I can. I HATE SHOE COMPANIES!!!!!!!!! Oh yes, forgot to add, I overpronate and have very high rigid arches and I run neutral. :-)

Heh, Rozzie, here I thought you were popping in to note that I meant the entire shoe industry (esp. since on our run in Dec., you and Mr. Roz had to listen to my lecture about ill-fitting fashion shoes being such a crock  ).

Anyone ever taken Bee Pollen? My books wants me to sprinkle it on my steel cut oats every morning. Been doing some research and wow, this is a wonder from nature. Anything from increasing metabolism to improving athletic performance and everything in between. I guess it can't hurt? :scratchchin:

Funny you should bring that up! There is a guy at the farmers' market that sells honey and bee pollen and was really pushing it. I might try one of the smaller bottles. I also have recently heard a lot of praise about anti-inflammatory properties of tart cherries and how it is supposed to improve performance.

I would be remiss if I didn't say that Kandi and her DH, John, are 2 of the nicest people you are ever likely to meet.

Nick

Welcome back out of lurkland yourself, NJN!

So is the Fleet Feet store just like an Athlete's Foot or a Foot Locker? Maybe I don't need to waste my time?

After some research, I think I need Motion Control shoes? Particularly due to an old ankle injury. The Runner's World shoe app recommended about 7 different kinds. I'm looking at the Nike Zoom Equalon (sp?).
Posted via Mobile Device

I will put my two cents in about shoes, which you can take or leave and I won't care either way. I've been to Fleet Feet in two different states and I've been to a locally owned running store in my old town of Louisville (which is consistently rated one of the country's top 25) and I wasn't impressed with either. All of the places automatically pulled a bunch of stability shoes out and had me try them on. To be honest, I don't know how much they contributed to injuries--for me I think my hip issues caused more of a problem than shoes as changing shoes hasn't corrected any problems--but I don't know they were right for me. (A complete sort of tangent--I read an article in Runner's World of a small study where they actually "fit" women with stability, motion controlled, and neutral shoes and then . . . well, it will take me too long to type it all out. Check it out here http://peakperformance.runnersworld.com/2010/08/aug-1-what-kind-of-running-shoe-is-most-likely-to-cause-an-injury.html I can totally get the point of the article as it has been my experience. Okay nono, now tear it apart ;))

Anyway, I had a sports med doc tell me don't worry about this kind of shoe or that kind of shoe. Try on as many different shoes as you can and find what works for you. I am applying that to my shoe hunting now. Whatever you do, buy from a place that has a generous shoe return policy. Fleet Feet usually does (just tell them to leave you alone except to keep bringing out shoes) and RoadRunnerSports.com does too. Most running stores let you run a little bit outside or on a TM. But for me, there is a big difference between TM or brief running outside and distance training. And gait analysis on a TM is next to worthless for me. I never can get settled into what feels like a comfortable gait on the TM. If you want a gait analysis and run on the roads, make them watch you run outside on the pavement.

Okay, so that's my opinion. Take it or leave it--it doesn't matter to me. Good luck!

Welcome SISrunner!

Well, I'm still at home. We had a couple of inches fall yesterday right before rush hour and it all became packed into an icy mess. It took me 3 hours and 20 minutes to get home from work. It is usually a 35 min drive. And things aren't much better this morning. Part of the problem (besides mid TN's inability to cope with such weather) is the fact that there are big hills all around middle Tennessee. Traffic is going so slowly that many cars and especially big trucks get stuck halfway up. It's nasty. I shouldn't go in, but if I don't, I have to take PTO. I think I should just suck it up and do so because if I get stuck on the interstate I'm just going to be more angry.

I also feel like crap because my daily trip to the Y couldn't happen yesterday. I'm in withdrawal!

Well, I decided to bite the bullet and just take the day off. I think it is the wisest decision, though I am still frustrated that the organization for which I work puts its staff in the position to either risk safety coming in or use earned vacation time, not to mention their clients, with its "we never close" policy. So ridiculous. I would think they lose more money staying open than actually closing for the day.

I completely forgot to share the latest bit of stupidity I've been contemplating. So, my sister and a friend of hers and I are planning a trip to WDW in October during what would be her fall break. Wouldn't you know but that the W&D half is the night we plan on arriving. Well, you know me when it comes to Disney races (or maybe you don't, but I'm a sucker for them)--especially this one. I have a special place in my heart for this one as it replaced the race that go me started in running, the Race for the Taste 10K. And I want that medal :D

The thing is, I will have to arrive after driving for 12 hours (my sister doesn't want to fly) and I will have just run the Akron full the week before. And you all know how well my last attempt at running a half 6 days after a full went ;) So I haven't decided. But I'm seriously leaning towards it.

Oh, and that day (October 1) is also the 40th anniversary of the opening of WDW!

I have often wondered what over pronation and supination has to do with the surface you run on.
For my first year of running, I ran with support shoes. I was put into a support shoe for pronation based on the wear on my shoe soles.

Incidently, I ran injured or hurting for the most part of that year. We took time out and traveled to a great running store that videoed your run and discovered that I ran neutral. The wear is slightly better and the hurt and injuries are minimal.

Most running stores have a natural assumption that you are running on a perfectly flat surface. Almost all roads are angled for water drainoff. That's why in races you want to be in the center as much as possible. I learned this the hard way during NoLa.

You can work on form, stride and gate and that could benefit you more than some shoes. I say find a make or model that fits great and that you are comfortable in and stay with it.

For shoes, I might have a little more wear on the outside on my 'mill shoes (especially the NBs) but nothing significant, and I don't see much at all on my current outdoor shoes... I might regret it, but perhaps I will ask lil' bro and/or my dad to watch my gait before I buy my next pair of shoes and get their opinion! :covermouth: Did I ever mention little bro. worked in a dedicated running shoe store while he was in college IIRC? Yeah, more droning on about many of my relatives being die hard runners- broken record broken record broken record! ;)

Got out and ran 4 miles after much of the snow and ice melted. It never got above freezing, but the sun was out. Still, that was deceptive as it looked warmer than it actually was. I just couldn't be on the TM when it was sunny out. The TM really seems almost like punishment to me, even though I can run faster on it. At least I feel I'm actually going somewhere outside.

If you will let me to take a detour from running, may I ask if anyone makes food for his or her dogs? I looked into it before but never did anything. I think now I'm at a different place, environmentally/health wise. Or I might try and go for a better quality dog food.

I worked with a dietician at my old hospital that did agility with Border Collies. Those dogs were incredible, also were therapy dogs. Anyhoo, she fed that diet--what's the name of it--where you cook everything natural for them. They never needed their teeth cleaned, their coats glistened, and not one of them ever had any type of allergy. I think she did a lot of chicken necks and veggies. She was very nazi about it.

I tried Bark at the Moon Organic dog food ($$$) but as you know, Greyhounds have zero body fat. (this was after china dog food scare) I took them into vet one visit and all the hounds had lost weight. I didn't really notice, but my vet sure did. You are supposed to always see last 2 ribs on a greyhound for perfect body weight, but there is not a lot of room for error. She said the organic stuff did not have enough crude fat for them and to try something else. I finally settled on Purina One Pro Plan. I don't like the ingredients all that much, but Tater is prone to Gastritis and is super picky and it's the only food I have found that meets both those requirements.

I am very strict with treats. They either get organic apples, carrots, yogurt or clean dog treats from farmers market. (sometimes clean treats from PetSmart that have less than 5 ingredients) Never table scraps from what we are eating. (I try to enforce this with my mom, and she drives me crazy when she goes against my wishes) They LOVE carrots and think they are little pieces of steak.

I would love to have the time to cook up brown rice, chicken necks and veggies for them for every meal. I know some other dog people that do that on SUndays and cook for the week. I have a hard time keeping up with our caloric needs.

Just catching up -- thank you for your opinion on shoe stores.

We have a couple of locally owned stores here, but they focus on football & baseball. We do have Hibbetts and Academy, but I might be just as good with the "Foley-ite" at the outlet store ;).

Hoping to have time to at least go by the Fleet Feet store when we are in South Louisiana. Hoping even more that my knee will be healed by then -- two more weeks.

Feeling a little better -- but I can't tell if that's just because I'm OD'ing on Tumeric :thumbsup2:

So I had a coworker do something fantastically awful today at work. It's a good thing I was only scheduled to work a half day, because I pretty much lost it (this is a big deal, because despite how neurotic I may seem on here, I'm pretty level headed at work). So now I'm trying to decide how to work it out--over a whole bowl of cookie dough and a bottle of wine or with a run. Is there something wrong with me that I see these as two logical options? I'm already drowning my anger with a carb bomb...errr panera bagel.

I did my best to get on here last night and post! I couldn't read the last two pages (they would not open) :confused24: so I gave up and went to read my book! :cloud9:

Yes, the Mercedes Half is tomorrow. Rick and I are still sniffling a bit but hopefully we will be alright! :fingerscrossed: I never got to test my inhaler but I will take it for the race and use it about 30 minutes before. I'm not very proficient at using an inhaler - any tips for me? I'm not worried about time this race...

No order of finish posted at the event, but hey it was a very nice race. Low key, the way I like it. Probably a bit too low key for some folks, but you know, we each have our preferences!

Calf is abouit 95%. Of course, I was so numb (shorts in 36F) that maybe it hurt but I couldn't tell. I was glad to be in those shorts by the end...I think it was about 47F by the end of the race. One of those days where there was no right way to dress because at some point you'd be either freezing or sweating too much.

I did, sort of, accomplish my objective of a progression run. Let's just say the splits at the end were indeed faster than the earlier ones, but it was more like I did my middle splits first, then went back to the slower splits to hang in there, then went to the plan for the end of the race with the fastest times. However, I couldn't quite maintain an 8 min mile at the end...but since I haven't run 13.1 since the OUC in Dec., I'm not upset about that! ;) Then add in 4 weeks of illness, and I'm about as pleased as can be!

Gail, I'll do a real race report tomorrow. Still a little fuzzy on some of the details. I hope overnight to remember more!

Hey Kandi, been meaning to ask you if you want to throw some 2011 goals into the pot. We traditionally all make yearly goals and then at end of year see who did the best reaching them. Our goals are all over the place, the important thing is we left our comfort zone trying to improve upon ourselves. Also I have the Rozzie Marathon weekend Challenge. State a time goal and if you meet it I buy you are tequila shot at the "cave" in Mexico. It doesn't have to to a super fast goal, just some sort of time goal to work toward for the weekend that is measurable. You can probably search this thread to see all our goals for the weekend. No pressure, but it sure is fun to root' each other on to make it. :)

I had a sucky LR today. 13 miler turned into 12.56 miler. It was in the low 20s, I know a heat wave compared to ya'll up North--but I had another episode with my hands. Had my big gloves on and liners on too and it hurt like freakin' hades. Had GI issues too. Miles in the bank, miles in the bank. :blech: I was supposed to be off tomorrow but I need to get out 4.2 in the morning sometime to finish up weekly mileage.

40 hours until new diet starts. On total binge this weekend to prepare. Yeah yeah yeah, that's healthy huh? My goal is to totally shock my metabolism this next week. Cookies in oven now.

Woot Woot! Way to go, nono! Still, I can't believe it's your first age group first place--what races have you been running???

Good luck, Lisa and Rick!

I'm feeling guilty because I didn't run today. Really, I've run pretty good distances (considering where I am in my "training" schedule) 2 days straight and I needed a rest, and I did do yoga this morning, and I spent 3 hours both ways driving to Louisville and back, but ever since I've started going to the Y on a regular basis, I feel like I'm doing something wrong to take a rest day. Now, I know that's not healthy and that rest days (especially for me) are very important. So I need someone just to tell me it's okay I didn't run today. :silly:

Yep this is the first time, and I placed second. I am in a fast age group and live in a fast area I suppose. Though, the closest I ever came to placing previously was the AC half a few years back. I came in 6th in my age group.

Hey Roz, the amazing thing is I'm still 12 lbs. heavier than Rehoboth, and 18 lbs heavier than my goal weight. So, get ready for AC sister! Our shoes will be in flames by the end. :goodvibes:

If I were you, I would start making one day a week a tempo workout. What I am doing to prepare for my 5K on first weekend in March--mile repeats. Warm up a mile, then I will do 2 x 1 mile at my goal pace, then cool down at least a mile. Do a 2 min "active" recovery in between. (no walking) First week, maybe just do one mile repeat and see how it feels. Remember you want to sharpen, not run your goal 5K in training. On other days, do as much "easy" base mileage as your leg will let you. You will have that race on a platter served to you!

Did not do any speed work last week, but this week going back to the old haunted grounds of the track. Going to run 2 miles there, then do some 400s at goal pace, then run home. Then next week do mile repeats as stated above. That's the plan anyway. It's a loooong shot for me to PR this 5K, especially being this heavy as I am now. Right now I will be estatic with a sub 23:00. Had a great 5 miler this morning and had to physically rein myself in every few minutes. My body wanted to fly. Funny how somedays it's easy, and some days it's a victory just to complete the run.

cloudnut220
02-13-2011, 05:36 PM
Roz--there are two immediate goals. This it the first week I'm going to try a fourth day of running. And I want to try one tempo a week. My PT recommended 20 minutes at goal 5k pace. So we'll see how that goes! It's interesting because I'm not really doing a longer run right now, and I'm not supposed to until I get used to the 4 days in a couple of weeks. It's just a weird feeling.

That is so awesome, nono!!!!!! Congrats!!

I bragged about you to people at our after race party that we sat with!!! There are a lot of Disney racers here in Birmingham too. We saw plenty of runners wearing Disney tech shirts.

Rick and I made it through the race today pretty well. It wasn't a PR but it wasn't our slowest race either. I am happy that we did so well considering we were both still very congested on the run. The best part is that I did not have chest constriction, thank God. :goodvibes: The worst part I experienced was terrible cramping in my feet, shins and calves. :( I think we would have had a better time if not for that. It started about mile 6 and went on to the end, so I need to figure out how to prevent this. We had a finish of 3:13:58! I joked to Rick several times that whenever we would come to a run portion it would always be a hill, lol!

The course was as fun as always. :D I remembered to wear my Peacock shirt and everyone was calling my name. I think Rick was a bit jealous so I need to order him his own Peacock shirt very soon!!

The after party was wonderful with two great bands, good food and beer! They even had little debutantes show up (16 year olds or so) and they went around serving everyone cake! I think the cake was in honor of the tenth anniversary of the Mercedes races. All in all, a very fun day! I ate like crazy today :eating: and it is back on task tomorrow. It was the first berserk eating day in a month though and at least it was on a half marathon race day...

Ran (what for me felt like) a fast 2 1/2 mile run today. I didn't time it so I don't really know, but I was huffing and puffing ;) It was a beautiful day for it, too. I got to wear shorts outside and everything.

After sitting my in car for 6 hours yesterday, I had what felt like cramps in my ITB this morning. It seems weird that my ITB should be able to cramp, but I think I had a similar sensation during the marathon.

Looking for a nice half for the spring. The dates I have available are May 14 or the first two weekends in June. Any suggestions? I feel like I should just go ahead and do the country music half the end of April, but I'm not really up to running a crowded, hilly race right now.

Rozzie - I don't set time goals for the Disney races because of doing them back-to-back and I stop to take pictures along the way. I just want to feel great and have fun running them.

I do usually try to beat my previous time in the other marathons I run (or at least not slow down too much). I hope to run around 4:30 for the Pocono marathon and the Via Marathon (Sept. 11).

Are those goals ok?:scratchchin:

I just found out today I might be doing the Caesar Rodney half-marathon on 3/27. I will give a goal when I find out I'm definitely running. I ran a fast (for me) 17-miler today with a woman who is training for Boston and who may be running CR. I think she will make me faster than I would be on my own.

Congrats Lisa and Rick!! Way to push through Lisa with the cramps. Ughh, it really is one of my worst nightmares to cramp up like that. The race sounds great, I really need to put it down on our list for the next year or two. Tell Rick he needs his shirt! I am glad you had a cheat day---we always eat whatever the heck we want after a race. :)

Well I have a few hours left and then the hammer falls with my new clean out. :fingerscrossed: Been cooking all day it seems, as I have to eat several times a day small portions. So I thought I would cook a lot and put a bunch of stuff up in pyrex dishes in the fridge.

Kandi, stop and take pictures in a race?????? Joking of course. I did see this guy in front of me last Jan who had it down pat. He was doing a pretty good clip and would toss the character handler his photopass card about 3 feet away, stop for a nano of a nano second and then take off. He was cracking up and having fun doing it. He was saying he always has a picture/time PR for Disney. (how many pics can he get in faster time than last year) I was like hmmmm....maybe that is something I could try...one day. :D I do still regret not stopping for Jessie in frontierland, there was no one in line too. It's just so hard for me to stop in race, not only mentally but it's hard on my body too. I can't walk through water stops either. I get a rhythm and my body starts wanting to bonk if I disrupt it. I know, I am a strange bird. (we need a strange bird smiley...)

I wish I had stopped for pictures with characters during the HM. Since it was my first race though, I was worried about stopping/starting and--I'll admit it--my total time. I had made a big deal about this being my first half to friends, family, coworker, on the blog, and I didn't want a time that was that far away from what I could actually do. There goes my type A personality getting in the way again...

I'm hoping that if I do it with my sister next year, she won't be so worried about time!

Speaking of my sister, she's still plugging away at couch to 5k, and her boyfriend is doing it too! He was telling me yesterday how much better running is making him feel. I'm trying to get Kori (sis) to post on here, but she's saying she's not sure, since she's technically not a DVC member. I told her it's okay since she still has her DVC kid status!

At the risk of playing devil's advocate to a woman withdrawing from sugar and caffeine. . . I am proud of myself when I have fun at a race, too--and for Disney races that does include taking pictures.

Roz, it looks like the Destin race the weekend of the ESPN 5K. I'm looking more for May/June. A half may not happen at that time this year. I am hoping to do the RC Cola and a moonpie 10 miler in June :silly:

In answer to the what can I eat on week 1, I can actually eat a lot. Low glycemic veggies (spinach, green beans, zuccuni, etc etc), clean proteins-chicken, bison, turkey, some fish etc. Sweet potatoes, quinoa, steel cut oats. Apples, pears, etc. Snacks are tuna with curry, protein drinks.

Next week I can introduce greek yogurts and banana's. I am really excited! (yes the lack of makes you crave it more ;))

Roz, I think Sophia's hot pink velour jogging suit and straw purse should be the official peacock uniform! :silly: (I love that the key would weigh her down, but the purse itself was not a problem, though where would she put her race number if she didn't carry it?!) I'm currently working through all 7 seasons on DVD.

And as for the airstream, you know I told you when we were at AK that's my dream, too! Spooky. . .

CN--I had hoped to be able to be within easy driving distance, but as by that time the humidity is cranked up in the southeast, there aren't very many races nearby. The marine corps historic half (http://www.marinemarathon.com/site7.aspx )Fredericksburg May 15 sounds the most promising. Actually, the VA wine country half sounded the most interesting, but it's sold out.

Well MM, if you decide to do that race, let me know. It's probably more realistic for my race calendar than Seashore Half, unless I'm seriously going to commit to run LRs while I'm in France (which is highly doubtful). And it's more interesting than the other half I was looking at that weekend, which is just in a suburb outside of Baltimore. At least MCM goes through a cute little town. I had previoulsly stayed away from that race because I thought it went through the battlefield (which is SUPER hilly) but it doesn't, so it would be okay!

CN it does look like there is a nice long up hill the last couple of miles ;) but it doesn't look as hilly as many others around the same time.

Knee update - still hurts.

Talked to ortho at our sons' baseball game Monday night & went back to see him today.

Did an ultrasound to rule out a blood clot - thankfully none found.

Leaves us with either a severe muscle strain or acute tendinitis. He says the stress fracture is healed and looked at the MRI again to confirm to tears and the exam today also indicated nothing torn.

So - it is finally on to PT - have an appointment set for a week from today. Didn't realize it would be so hard to get in - but, I've made it this long.

Have I mentioned that I really want to run? Guessing that it has been so long since I've run, I'll have to start over and build up gradually?

Rozzie

So, are you still doing AC? Is there another race that you could do to try and BQ before Sept?

I need to talk to Coach Hardarse when he gets back. Sept and Aug is a hard month to plan for a marathon with us and hurricane season. We lucked out so much with AF, but I lost so much sleep staring at NOAA's tropical weather page the days before it about drove me nuts.

The plan is now to still do AC. I have the time off from work, that Monday and Tuesday after the race. Plus I really want to do it! :D Then there is a idea that is floating around that Nono and I might blaze out the Marathon in Jan and maybe not do Goofy. Everything is upside down now and it's hard to even think of restructuring the next year. There is this Snickers Marathon in early March in GA that I promised a friend I would do too. I was just going to the HM if I BQ'd, but now I might run the full with her too. Heck, why not at this point. She just wants someone to pace her to her first sub 4:00. Not that I am pacing genius but it would be fun to experience that with someone, KWIM? So who knows, but we will figure things out by end of weekend when Mr. I don't want to come home I want to live in Italy lands back in reality.

http://www.vianet.org/events/marathon/index.shtml

It took me a minute or two to figure this out. AC would have been soon enough for Boston race reg. but they upped the date for registration to September? :(

I am sorry, Rozzie that these changes took place, especially the early sign ups for the fastest racers! What is the point of setting a marker to attain if they then decide to give an extreme advantage to the fastest racers??

Are you doing the Snickers this year or are all these races planned for 2012?

I'm glad Mr. Roz is loving his trip but he better get his Peacock *** home soon! :p

I am glad, jrbdad, that you are finally going to get some PT so that the running light can be seen in your tunnel soon!! :cheerleader:

Having a group interview today for a new job (same profession - mortgage loan officer). This bank does business in at least 32 states; I could probably be all the Peacock's loan officer, lol! :D

Team, I have to tell you, I feel like I got of the marketing treadmill this morning. I realized overnight how bought into the hype I have been about Boston. Lisa--good luck! If you can write in MD, I might be talking to you about a refi!

nono--I see what you mean about the "marketing mill". What makes Boston the greatest marathon in the world anyways, except for the fact that they market themselves that way? The rolling registration strikes me as particularly unfair. If you qualify, you should qualify. If they don't want slower (haha...like anyone who BQs is slow!) runners, maybe they should just raise the qualifying even more. That seems better than what they've done--which is essentially making it so you conditionally qualify. Fast people should have to get up early to register, just like people with a lot of DVC points should have to call at 9am when the 11 month window opens (instead of getting that much rumored "special treatment"). But then what do I know, I'll never qualify for Boston.

I do hope you guys still do AC, because I really was planning on doing SOMETHING that day and seeing everyone.

Well I basically combined you and me into a person and showed how someone could be feeling screwed (since so many folks are saying it's a "fair system".) I was really thinking of a current injured runner in FL, but didn't want to name that person in the discussion. And I said that the system will see fair to Canadians, not to Southerners...as Southerners have no choices for races between May - Sept. Well, this person started picking my posts apart, and I know she's a Canadian living in the US, but I didn't think she was serious. Oops... :oweye:

Anyway, yeah, $150 is a bit steep. Also, you'll get qualified, and then you can decide whether or not to go!

Hey hey some data points on the Boston Marathon's registration entries. Apparently, about 2000 people qualify by being given that last :59 seconds (like me! ) So, given that and given that I think there's a number floating around that 6500 folks were shut out of registration this year, with the new qualifying times in effect, technically "everyone" who qualifies and wants to pay the $150 registration fee should fit.

You are a OAK! :thumbsup2:

BTW, how is the leg?

cloudnut220

OAK?

The leg feels great, but I have been taking some advil to try to keep my throat from hurting too bad. I've got this crazy swollen gland on one side of my neck and no other symptoms. Weird right? But I don't think the advil is really masking anything, because when I use the foam roller, I'm not finding any knots :thumbsup2:

I'm just itching to build some mileage. One more week. I actually blogged about being injured yesterday--it's really been a learning experience.

OAK?

.

Did you ever see the movie Tombstone about Wyatt Earp? Don't worry I was complimenting you. :)

Just keep rolling. Try if you can to back off the Advil to keep your leg in check. Do you have a low grade temp? It really sounds like your immune system is doing it's job. You are healthy and eat right so all your defenses should be on guard. When we get tired it's just our bodies telling us it needs a little more rest to fight off whatever is trying to attack. Make some honey tea for your throat. Sip on it throughout the day. Maybe only take advil at night so you can rest easy? Hope you feel better soon.

TRY to get some rest, and no, beer is not good right now. Wheat and yeast are inflammatory ingredients and can make inflammation worse. Okay, you have had your lecture for today. :p

cloudnut220
02-19-2011, 08:22 AM
Never saw that movie.

I've been trying not to take the advil that much, but I needed some before we went to dinner with friends last night and then before bed, because i didn't want to wake up in horrible pain at midnight again (that was not fun on Thursday night). I know the beer was a bad idea, but we went to this fancy beer restaurant with like 100 taps and I couldn't resist :( Nothing tonight at this cookbook event I'm going to. The cookbook event is one reason I'm baking today, and I'm supposed to make a birthday cake for Noel's family party for tomorrow too. We'll see how far I make it though, because these cookies are a real PITA. Everything in this cookbook they're from is a real PITA, so I'm not sure why I'm surprised--but the results are amazing, so I keep going back for more.

When is Mr. Roz due back?

To channel Viking, that's a waste of perfectly good Jack ;) :viking:

Had a wonderful 6 miler this morning. I ran again with my sister's training group (rather, the large group she is helping coach for the Country Music half), so it was around downtown Nashville and the west end--lots of hills (which is good for them, since the course is full of them). I decided I would just focus on form rather than pace. Well, of course, when I have good form I have a faster time, and use less energy doing it--not to mention less pain. :cloud9:

Then I went to church where we're working on planning a community garden. We rent a bed, plan and plant it, and then can share the left-over vegetables with the community. The beds are raised and 10x3, so plenty of space (especially for just one person). I'm so excited, because we're doing it organically! They are hoping to have some one this summer teach us how to can, too.

I'll be heading out to hang with my sister in a little while.

Oh, and for those of you who were here about a year and a half ago when I was first experiementing with during-run/race nutrition (at the guidance of my sister) may remember that I was filling up one of my hydration bottles with natural applesauce. My sister made so much fun of me for doing so, while I told her it would catch on--just wait. Well, she should've listened to me because we could've made some MONEY on that idea. When she was flying back from the Ukraine in January, she saw this little pouch thing of applesauce in the Paris (or maybe Kiev) airport and brought it to me. I was in Publix the other day and just happened to see several flavors of fruit sauce. She's said she's also seen it in Whole Foods, too. Who's laughing now! Seriously, though, I do think I'll try using it on a run.

Well, my sister told me she is in for the Akron marathon--the full distance--despite once swearing never to run another full! It's one of her goals before turning 30 in November (she said her other two were to run a sub-2 hr half and a sub-3 hr olympic distance tri). Oh, and she also knows about my contemplation to run the W&D one week after  (but this time she held her tongue).

Well just a few updates.
I am home safe.
Gained 12 lbs
Have major sweling in my left leg from the flight.
Took over 450 pictures so I'll post one or two later. There is this wonderful sculpture in the plaza of the Vatican that is surrounded by two peacocks. Very cool.
Only ran 7 miles over two days in Tuscany VERY hilly and altitude gave me some issues.
Missed everyone. I'll post my run report Monday. Hope all is well with everyone.

I bet some of that 12 pounds is the swelling in your leg and elsewhere in your body, Mr. Roz! Glad you are home and can't wait to hear more! what did you do with your lovely wife??

I think DG must be extra busy - I hope that is all it is...

Rick and I did the old 5 mile walk trail that leads to ice cream at mile 2.5. I ate a protein bar before we left and because ice cream is not on my diet, I just had a water bottle. By the time we got back to the car, I felt shaky from the exertion, kind of hypoglycemic or something. Isn't that rather stupid? :oweye: Got home and almost overdosed on mixed nuts, lol!! I am in the beginning of a lupus flare so that may have contributed, I guess. :confused24:

Important safety tip: 1.5" inseam split shorts w/o Body Glide = chaffing even if only worn for 16 min. ellip & 27 min. 'mill intervals + warm ups and cool downs... :oweye: At least, that is what I learned last night from personal experience! DW also thinks I look funny in shorts that, well, short! :silly: Beyond that I've been managing to squeeze in exercise most days while I've been awal, around being moderately sick on and off, dental work, and doing some theatrical lighting sub-contracting helping remotely to fix control equipment and programs on a Mardi Gras parade float. Weird stuff going on in Geekland, but other than not having time to catch my breath more good than bad.

Hopefully I won't be a stranger again for a long time. Pan for tonight is to wear compression shorts under said short shorts despite their lining and see if that prevents additional issues w/o use of Glide or similar; I really don't like the greasy feeling that leaves so I try to ONLY use it on runs over 5 miles or 60ish minutes...

OK - PT appointment went great! Two hours, but really felt better after. He took tons of time to walk me through proper stretches and exercises.

He said it looked to him like a combination of my ankle injury causing me to pronate too much along with the shoes.

He felt like I'd be a candidate for motion control (I know Nono).

Wants me to start easing back into it and noting what bothers it.

We shall see. I did the bike at PT and it is slightly sore - not unbearable.

He also wants me to start running both with the traffic and against (not at the same time).

I'm very encouraged. :)

Glad to have you back, DG, but I think I'll side with DW on this one. Most women can't pull off shorts that short. I have a pair that are 2 1/2 in inseams that I will be the first to admit my butt hangs out of them (even though they are comfortable). And I also will admit that I'm not small by any means. Have you tried compression shorts under regular shorts? I find them even more comfortable because they don't move at all when running. And, no chafing (at least not thigh rub. After moving 6 hrs during the marathon, I did--for the first and only time--have chafing at the waistband). I'm not saying that running is about fashion, especially as I tend to look very dorky, but you do want to be comfortable--and not flash anything that is not appropriate for a family friendly race ;)

Was blessed with extra time right before lunch so I could squeeze in 3 miles during lunch. Ran another 2.5 mi (this time on the TM at the Y) before yoga. Yoga was very difficult tonight. We had some new people so the instructor called it a "foundation night." I think it was harder than any of the normal nights. Have you ever tried holding downward facing dog for several minutes? It is not for the faint of heart. But it was good. After my massage yesterday (I am trying to get back into regular massages) and yoga tonight, I feel all wonky.

John, I hurt when I started PT and I'll admit, if I lay off on excercises now and then pick them back up they'll hurt at first! So I would think that's normal.

So I may have seen the stupidest runners ever this morning. They were running three abreast on a city street where there was a lane of traffic in each direction and cars parked on the side. Yeah, not a lot of wiggle room there. I get that the sidewalks are icy, but THREE abreast?

My calves are feeling better today (I think the soreness was a combination of the additional run last week + the fact that I've been trying to adjust my stride not to heel strike too much) but it looks like this might be an unexpected rest or cross day because I might meet a friend who is in town from Portugal for a week.

MM-I've learned from my tendon episode that the no pain while running then pain afterwards is classic strained tendon behaviour :-( See if you can find some achilles tendon strenghtening online--my pain was really helped by doing some heel lifts--to strenghten the whole area before it gets worse.

I'm not so interested in this company. I am about to complete my application and on line resume for the bank I met with last week. :fingerscrossed:

The bank I work for now finally posted their year end quarter results and it was another 49 million dollar loss! :oweye: I've got to get out of there...

DG-Good luck in your review!

Lisa--I hope you get that job with the company you liked!

MM--I'm a bit envious of that add on! Everytime we spend all of our points, I want more.

MM, congrats on your addon! How many points did you get? :goodvibes:

Too many! (120 to be exact)

Okay, so I didn't do anything today. Tomorrow I want to do an easy run before yoga. 7 miles is on the book for Saturday.

CN- Glad you enjoyed your friend time.

nono- Sorry to hear about the double cramp! Glad you knocked out your 1800. I like that distance... :)

MrR- Love the pics!

MM- Hope the healing works out... Where were the 120 points at? :listen: Congrats just the same. :thumbsup2:

Lisa- Good luck with the bank / job hunt!!! :fingerscrossed:

I did 45 minutes of 'mill intervals last night & repeated it again tonight. :D Both went well. Compression shorts under the mini-Minuzos ;) worked. :silly:Review went well to boot today. Tomorrow we are going to Red Lobster for dinner; I got a card for $10 off in the mail last night if I pay with Discover. So I'll be going for some cheddar baked biscuits Friday night... :eating:

DG they are for HHI which is my favorite overall DVC resort.

First tornado warnings of the year.

Okay so the tornado warning was issued for my area half an hour ago and just expired yet the tornado siren just started sounding 5 mins ago as the wind started dying down.

And now it's stopped.

CN did you know "squiggly line" is a meteorological term? I guess that's what I get when the only local channel I now get is the most ridiculous news team.

Yep, getting blown to bits here too, but luckily, it's an easterly wind at the moment. (They are just easier to take from the way our house is situated).

It's supposed to get uglier right when Mr. Nono touches down with winds like we had last Saturday, which was our "dry hurricane" day. I'm sure he'll be thrilled to have to drive home in the mess, but hey, he had a week in Amsterdam, so, well, I feel not too much sympathy! :p

Calves are feeling good. Now for all my weekend mileage! :fingerscrossed:

Just wait til' Spring MM! There will be a Tornado watch everyday and usually I figure out I am in a warning after it's expired. :confused24: Ahh living in the South. We did knock out 6 miles in a downpour this morning with shorts on, so I guess it's the ying and yang of living here. Never got cold!

Nono, help me with this. How many laps is 1800? I thought about you last night--picked up the latest copy of Oxygen magazine. (which I love) Dana Torres is on the cover and she has her ab workout in there. Mr Roz and I are going to do it for 2 weeks ("Get Amazing Torres Abs in 2 weeks!") so we can look like her. :D You are turning into my personal Torres role model. :) Have you thought about those sleeves anymore?

Lisa, good luck with job hunt! Sounds stressful. :hug1:

Coach had an ambitious time-frame for that last night, but the newest gal and I took some serious rests in between and went a little over our hour practice, but we got it done. Lots of variety. The main set was a double of this: 10x 25s (alternating free drill and choice), w/10 sec rest, 2x 125 freestyle (pick-ups on the odd laps) w/20 sec rest, and 1x 250 freestyle.

I forget what we did for warm up and cool down. Did have more leg issues last night, but as I had hoped, getting back on the horse, so to speak, seemed to have helped work out some of the kinks!

MM--Squiggly line is not a standard meteo term...must be something new! :rotfl2: No tornadoes for us (they're pretty unusual in maryland) but we do have those high winds nono was talking about. Supposed to be as bad as last weekend. Not really a big deal for us in Baltimore, but dad was at the beach last weekend and said there was dry sand blowing all over the place and it was really making a mess.

So I never offered a report on my run last night, because well it was embarassing. I was feeling good moving well on the TM and then suddenly I had a horrible immobilizing cramp in my left glute. I jumped off the mill and tried to stretch it out by walking around some. I got it released, but it was still super sore, so I took it as a sign from the universe to cut the workout short. Got home and told Noel, who enjoyed saying "you've got a pain in the arse! hahahaha!" all night. Still feels a little sore this morning (like a charlie horse would be the next day). Seriously, sometimes feel like it's me against my body :(

Ah, let's see. Overall it was 72 lengths of the pool. 1800/25 (yards). I've seen an argument or two about whether a lap is 1 length or 2. Around here, we use it to mean one way...but given that we have a mix of 25 yard, 25 meter, 50 yard and 50 meter pools, we tend to indicate by yardage (meterage) what was done.

On my log, I'm still converting this to 2/3 running time, so I get an equivalency of 4 miles for it! :goodvibes:

Not considering the compression sleeves at the moment because my problems are all swimming-related. I jumped into this workout pretty hot and heavy. I should expect some pain. Now, if it doesn't regulate itself in the next couple weeks, like by March 10, I'll be thinking new thoughts.

Whew! That was a long time for site maintenance.

Signed up earlier today for the Expedition Everest Challenge. One week until I'm at WDW for the ESPN 5K.

Decided I would be smart and NOT run today and do at home yoga instead of the more intense yoga class at the Y. I also am making the point, and letting you all know to hold me accountable, that I am going to walk-run the 7 miler tomorrow morning. I really don't want to do more damage.

So, I finally went to the library yesterday and checked out Dean Karnazes's "50/50" on CD. Now, I will confess, I have no idea who the "big names" in endurance running are. I don't read Runner's World on a regular basis, and it's never been important for me to necessarily know. I find out by being on this thread and going to race expos. So I had no idea who Dean Karnazes was. I found the book by doing a search for Matt Fitzgerald.

Anyway, as odd as it was that I got this audio book yesterday, this morning on Regis and Kelly was the start of Dean's "Run Across America." (Fridays are my day off so I can actually watch Live.) I was intrigued since he started from Sleeping Beauty Castle at DLR. Then, at the end of the show, they announced they were having 5Ks all along his route to run with him. I'm planning on signing up for Indianapolis. It's for a good cause--after starting his 50/50 book, I really know how much it is on his heart to promote running as a cure for illness, especially obesity/childhood obesity.

MM--Can you please post lots and lots of pictures of ESPN the Weekend? Someone I know may be having serious Disney withdraw. Like so bad she had panic about 2013 points this morning. In the interest of friends helping friends, please bring a little piece of WDW back for us! :D

I'll try and remember, CN ;) I used to be really gung-ho about posting very detailed TR with lots of pics, but now it takes all I have to keep up with this thread.

I am very excited that I finally managed to snag a ticket to the special, AP holder only, EE 5 yr anniversary event Saturday night. The day the tickets originally became available--last Friday--I tried for hours, but just kept getting an error message. I learned the tix were all distributed in 5 mins. So when more became available today, I was ready. I admit, I really didn't think I would be much more successful as I kept getting error messages, but after repeatedly hitting subit for 50 mins, success! It'll probably be totally lame, but it's free and a "special event" that I'll actually be at WDW for, so I want to at least give it a whirl.

I realized I won't be able to make the 5K in Indy as I have other plans that weekend. It's probably for the better to not drive 5 hours one way for a 5K that is more expensive than those at WDW (:scared07:) just to turn around and drive back.

The meeting last night at the other firm was 3 HOURS!!!! They had more to offer than I thought but I still think I will be happier striking out on my own (sorta) with my three co-workers. Today was the ultimate in stress because of work and the situation overall and then my 18 year old son complicated it further by breaking off with his girlfriend rather abruptly. They were together just over a year. :( I was in tears several times this morning feeling bad for her. I didn't necessarily see him marrying her but she really leaned on him as one of the most stable people in her life...

To top it all off, I heard a rumor this afternoon that our President of my current bank quit. I wonder if the regulatory agency made him resign. They can do that when a bank is under a cease and desist. I can't say I feel bad about it because he bears responsibility along with other highly placed people for the state of this bank.

My processor is panicked that if I take this job that no one knows about that she will lose her job. She is hovering around me and it is making me feel so awful. My husband and others keep trying to reassure me that its okay to go to the job I want even if others feel their job is in jeopardy...:blech: I know it is true but my Catholic guilt is trying to overwhelm me. The bank that wants to hire us four doesn't want to commit to taking others until they see what our production is and if they need to hire more support staff. I don't blame them because they don't want to hire and then lay off people...:(

Yes, Rozzie, my life has become unbearably stressful. At least, I have my new once a month painting class tomorrow morning. We are going to do watercolors. After that, Rick and I will go for a run.

Lisa-

Sounds like you have choices - that's great :).

MM-

I think it sounds like a blast!

Wish me luck - shoe shopping today :). Can't wait to get fitted. Went to the Nike Outlet yesterday and spent too much money on shorts & t-shirts - so I'd better be able to run again at some point. Will probably give the TM a try tonight at the hotel. PT wants me to "stress" it. But honestly, it still feels pretty stressed.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

OK - 45 minutes & 7 pairs of shoes and 4 different inserts later - the winner is:

Brooks Beast

Big, clunky & motion control. Actually went out and ran the parking lot - no pain!!!!

Hoping to test them on the treadmill later.

I could have spent hours at Fleet Feet. Great store, wonderful service.

Instead - DW & I are now bow shopping for DD10 :).

Nice find John, after all if it gets you back to the roads I am sure I would wear high healed clown shoes. Best of luck with your ease back into training!

Lisa, wow. Just wow. I am glad you have Rick to lean on in times like this.

MM, you don't even know how disappointed I am that I am not going next weekend. :-(

I am having a very unproductive day. Actually I ran 5, did my new ab workout and hand weight workout but now the house is sitting with a 1000 chores waiting on me. Blah.
