Nono, thanks for a great trip report!! Rozzie is right, you have organized yourself far better than I ever have. I am beginning to be more aware of my pace now that I have a Garmin :yahoo: Maybe I can gain in this area too!

Rozzie, that is so very cool about Scott's goal to do the half! You know, that 2010 Half is likely to have a cool 10th anniversary medal also!!! I've been trying so hard to convince my DH to do this with me :D I haven't got him on board though but I sure told him about Scott :goodvibes:

You are right, Gail! Team Peacock is the best! I love being here with y'all on the Running Disney thread

So did you learn all this stuff on your own, from a book, or a mixture? Like where in heck did you learn about coconut water?

Well, I'd like to read books on running, but with my life, I have no real time to do so.

Mostly, I just try to hang out with health nuts, read online about running, and apply what I know from other sports to running. It was likely a health nut that told me about the coconut water. :thumbsup2:

Yes, everyone who attempts is a winner as far as I'm concerned.

However, you've done something most of us have yet to accomplish: place in your age group! :yahoo: So, pretty much, you are top Peacock.

Yep, it's official, Gail is the top Peacock!!!! :thumbsup2:

Thank you all!!

I forgot to mention that when I was over my son & Dil's for dinner on Sunday, I found out that my grandson got a 1st place medal on the kids Broad Street Run in Philly. I asked him how far did he run and he said it was a lot. He was 3 1/2 at the time of the run. I knew my son did the run but I didn't know about my grandson and his medal. He was so cute explaining how he ran past the two kids in front of him to win.

Gail that is so cool that you have 3 generations of runners! You guys get to relate to each other in more than just the traditional manner. You also bond as athletes. Very very cool! :goodvibes:

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever. --Lance Armstrong

I am sure you all have read that before, but I just came across this quote. It really spoke to me, I also thought of all of my fellow Peacocks too. :)

I know some people are "Armstronged" out, but I can't get enough of the dude. Maybe it's my new passion for running, or my new job where I am around really sick cancer patients all the time, I don't know. But I am loving his quotes!

Rozzie,

I think folks like him are modern prophets. People who are radicals, who defy the "conventional wisdom" and show us what is possible.

If we can only see our way through to believe!

OK, I got up early today and wrote up my training plan all the way through the winter.

Gail, there is almost nothing I would be more proud of than inspiring someone else to take up exercise of any type!!! :goodvibes:

I am not Armstronged out and I think that is a fabulous quote! He had every reason to give up and every reason not to! He made the right choice and will always be a role model for me as a consequence!! :goodvibes:

Nono, you crack me up using 13.1 miles as a training run for a ten miler

It's coming....

Well for a race that’s only in its 5th year, has 3,000 entrants and is on the same day as many other big races, the Grand Rapids Marathon goes into PR Big Time! As you can see, they had a very fun theme for this year.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/PoohsPal/GR%20Half%2008/IMG_1348.jpg

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/PoohsPal/GR%20Half%2008/IMG_1346.jpg

We went to the expo Saturday and were impressed.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/PoohsPal/GR%20Half%2008/IMG_1347.jpg

They had some great stuff from the vendors, and I picked up the cutes long sleeved tech shirt with an oval on it that said iRun 26.2. Our race packets were great and we got a ton of free stuff, including really nice socks with the race logo. We got a race poster too.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/PoohsPal/GR%20Half%2008/IMG_1364.jpg

They did their pace groups a little different. It was all by stars. There was a Penguin Brigade at 4:44. What do you know? That’s a 2:22 half. That’s would be my PR.

We left, just as the kids were starting to get ready for their marathon. (They run 25 on their own and finish the last 1.2 at the race. They got medals like ours and even the bagels and fruit and stuff.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/PoohsPal/GR%20Half%2008/IMG_1349-1.jpg

They even lowered the start/finish line for them! Too cute!

I don’t know why, but we were both feeling like it was a big race. Maybe the expo or something. We were way too nervous for a local half, though. Sleep was just like at WDW. WTH?

So, finally it was time to go. It was a little chilly, but that's great for me. I told Scott about my dream pace of 10:45, which Craig had reinforced in my brain, but had been lingering in the back of my mind too. My current PR was 10:50.

We get there and it was a decent crowd.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/PoohsPal/GR%20Half%2008/IMG_1355.jpg
]

We lined up between the Penguin Brigade and Al Gores’ Unfortunate Pace Group (4:58)

We never heard the National Anthem or go or anything, but eventually, we started to move. It was crowded and we started slower then usual, but picked it up ok. Here’s the big city skyline, lol.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/PoohsPal/GR%20Half%2008/IMG_1356.jpg

Was feeling pretty good. At mile 4, I was a minute ahead, averaging 10:30. :O Scott asked if we were going to go for a 10:40 pace. I laughed. From 5 to 6, all downhill and pace was low 10s. :-O Scott needed a potty stop at 10 and kept apologizing. OMG. He wanted me to keep running and he'd give me a bottle and try to catch up. No way.

So, I did walk while he stopped. Adjusted clothing and such, stretched. Took some pix of the park. No biggie.

He caught me and pace was bad (11:30ish), but that's life. Next mile I had to Gu (and that makes me slow) and we had a big uphill. So, better, but not great. ~10:45. Still, it's now mile 8 and we're ahead by 1:40. Ave pace about 10:35. :O Scott had set that as an evaluation point. We were doing awesome and on the prettiest part of the course. Bike path through the woods, next to the river.

Right about then a girl passed us. We chatted with her a bit and she moved on. Then, she was at the side of the road with a calf cramp. She said she was ok. Mile 9 was back to about 10:25. Woo hoo!!!! Just before 10 there was a spot in the path where roots had pushed up the asphalt. I saw it and thought I stepped over. Obviously, my legs and brain were no longer in sync, as I hit. Thought I'd caught myself but then just flew. Don't know how that happened but Scott saw it too. All I could think as I was going down was how I dreaded hitting and wondered how a WISH friend has taken a fall like this and finished a full. I landed with a whoosh as al the air left my lungs. I was telling Scott I'd be ok as soon as I could breathe again. The girl we had talked to made sure I was ok. Scott made me get up right away. Good thing, as I may have laid there and wallowed forever. A guy offered me Advil. Another woman asked if I was ok and what happened, as I was walking and trying to breathe again. I told her and she told me I have to pick my feet up. (Did I mention I thought I had? Thought that was a bit snotty.)

So, after I was almost back to breathing normal, I made myself run. I had a bad mile, obviously, and was really bummed. My left knee hurt and, the heels of my hand hurt. I just kept thinking how my WISH friend always gets back. Then, just after I start up again, there are some inspirational signs from the store where I bought my fun new shirt at the expo. Very cool.

So, I turn the corner and there’s an overpass we go under. They have huge speakers under it that just start booming. What? Rocky! OMG. I know that was put there for me. I start flying. The girl who sold me my shirt is high 5-ing me before the over pass. I was careful not to use my whole hand but that was too cool. We had an uphill I was dreading, but lots of fans. All I could think was that I was gonna' try to get back on track for my friends who don't give up.

So, I'm flying. Get up the hill and pace was coming back. Pass the guy who offered me Advil and he was so kind. Very happy to see that I was doing ok. Small downhill then up again and I was back to 10:15 for the half mile (10 to 10.5, I think). So, Scott looks at me and reminded me that we PR'd our 1st marathon when I fell. He's now telling me that next time I start running poorly, he's going to push me down. Nice. lol.

I just kept picking up steam from there, even though I was getting tired. I was back to low 10s for the last mile. About a block before the finish, the Penguin Brigade catches us. I was afraid that meant I was slow, but knew they had to be fast. Then a couple people pass and tell the others to come up (in front of us). She says they’ll slow down when the others get up there. Grrr… So, there’s now a line of 4 that have passed me and slowed down right before the finish. How rude!!!! So, I put on the gas. Don’ tick me off when I’ve been through what I have, but it hurts me to have an angry attitude towards Penguins, even though it was just a pace group and was not sanctioned by the Penguin or anything.

So, low 9s for the last 0.2. :O :O Forgive me for being vain, but I am so proud of myself for not using it as an excuse to give up. That would be my style. I think it's one of my biggest personal victories, as well as smashing the heck out of my PR.

Garmin: 2:19, 10:30 pace. OMG
Chip: 2:19:10, 10:35.5 pace. Not as good, but still blew away my PR pace by almost 15 sec and my “dream pace” by almost 10!!!

Monday was rough, as I was feeling the brunt of my fall, btu much better now. My knee only hurts to touch. It run fine! :D

What a inspirational race report! A lot of people would have just sat in the road, but to get back up and PR! Wow, you are a Peacock!!!!! :yahoo: Oh, and LOL on the Mickey reference. Me? Whatcha smokin'??? :D

I leave Friday after work for WDW. Nervous yet excited about the ToT. I am excited about the race, but nervous about finding packet pick up, figuring out where to go, etc. I know it will all fall into place once I get there. We will have our laptop there, hopefully it will pretend to be a functioning reliable laptop while down there and let me post a race report.

I think it is the tights with the skirt! I'm a bit pear shaped and also hourglass shaped, so I'm not what I consider a runner's build. Don't get me wrong, I like my body (My sister says I'm the only woman she knows who has ever said that). It's just not an elite athlete's body. Nono--love the outfit and the smile on your face. You really look like you love running. :goodvibes:

Lisa--WTG on the tempo! It sounds like your training is getting better and better. :)

Carrie--I haven't quite decided on my outfit. I know it's my black running skirt, but it's either a hotpink/black tank or a teal tank. They will probably be able to spot me better by the fact I'll be the only sole wearing their water belt. I really need to carry some extra stuff with me (cliff block, cell phone in case I can't find Scott, and some cut up moleskin--long story on that) so I need my Nathan belt. I figure I'll carry my water, I feel naked without it now and it might help my nerves. Plus, this is weird, I spit a lot sometimes when I run and it helps to have a swallow of water afterward. I know, the picture of grace and elegance. :silly:

Gail-- don't feel bad, this week is nuts. You will have plenty of walking next week, plus we are still a month out from when our 1/2 training begins.

Well it was raining sideways after work so I got on the TM at the gym, but started getting nervous as my sciatica was really start to talk to me. Jumped off and went over to indoor track where it felt better. WTH is up with that? I just think my body hates the TM. Anyhoo, I did 3 miles or so. I think I can go the distance on the ToT, but my mind is trying to play games with me. I just tell it to STFU and then things are better. ;)

Gail, it is so hard when you are building your base, but I promise over time it gets easier.

Thanks for the comments on my smiling. I do run like that all the time. The only time I ran crying was mi 12 to 13.1 at WDW when I could finally run. (I had been hemmed in the whole time before that).

I'm looking forward to this next time...glad to NOT be at an "official" hotel with transportation and all that. We can have Jimmy tunes in the car and chill out in a more appropriate way! :)

I'm looking forward to this next time...glad to NOT be at an "official" hotel with transportation and all that. We can have Jimmy tunes in the car and chill out in a more appropriate way! :)

Wow nono, I can't imagine being hemmed for all that mileage. Hopefully the Richard Petty thing will help spread things out. Though all the stories I read about the traffic in the Jan race makes me want to skip it and just stick to the Porncess each year. Glad your foot is feeling better. I always smile when picture you and Renee on your runs. :goodvibes:

So agree on the Jimmy tunes. I'm happy too not to be at a "official" hotel and all the hoopla. I just want to be in a nice relaxed environment night before the race, I can't think of a better place for that than OKW!

I don't have a clue! I think I'm going to do "it" on Sun/Tues/Thurs/Sat...I'm up for anywhere....

I had to bag a run today (just got home from the day at Mom's and the island is flooding -- not going to be a hero with my foot hurting), so I'll have to do 7s, but again, to do most of it together would be cool!

I'm sorry about your foot, nono!

Well, I got my 12 miles done today - I can't say it was pretty though. I actually felt good through mile ten. Miles 11 and 12...I kinda just gutted them out! One thing I did real different is I tried to do a slow sustained jog. I decided this rather spontaneously and was able to do 45 minutes without a walk break. Overall, in three hours, I jogged about 2 hours and twenty minutes of it and walked only 40 minutes! That is a big change for me but it slowed me way down. It was either that or the fact that I am still sick and that slowed me down. Last week, I was a minute and twenty seconds faster per mile with average heart rate of 136. This week, my average heart rate was 149!! So, sickness definitely affected me. I was a little down on how slow I was :(

Now that I have whined about it, I am going to focus on the positive that I was able to jog twice as much as last week and that I got my 12 miles in while sick :yahoo: Thanks for putting up with me, girls!!

Only have a second, but just wanted to report I DID IT!

Haven't gone to look at the official, but it was close to 1:33:30ish. Averaged about a 11:30 pace. I couldn't believe it when I finished, and had some gas still in the engine where I could sprint the last 1/2 mile. It was a awesome race, everyone was commenting on how much better this year was than last years. Got in at 0200 and iced my knees for a while, my knees were barking for sure. I promise I'll write a better race report in detail in a day or two when things calm down. Checking out of BCV now and headed to BWV for 5 nights. Wish you were all here! Maybe next year? Team Peacock does the Tower? :D

CONGRATULATIONS ROZZIE!!!! I never doubted you'd do well!!!!!!! I was thinking of you while I was out there at dawn getting my 7 miler in...typical noreaster style storm -- it's clear and beautiful here this morning. Yes the thunder and lightening was very weird, Lisa, at this time of the year, as it wasn't a temp change coming through. :confused24: That's the only time we generally get it -- if a wild temp change is coming, and even then, most the time, those just blow on in without a lot of fanfare.

Well we got up and ran 3 miles before daylight on the "boards" this morning. I kept thinking of nono for some reason...hehehe. Scott did great and it was his longest distance yet and never had to walk. He is so motivated seeing this race in person. I was really surprised the number of runners up and running in the dark. Yes we get up way too early on vacation, we can't help it...but don't ask if we have gotten a lot done. I think we have done 4 rides in almost 3 days? 7 miles in this morning around the Boardwalk, down to The Studios, etc. The Boardwalk area is definitely the most runner-friendly area of WDW, IMHO. Mr Nono is out now getting his miles in.

So, while I was doing laps I realized why I don't like to run a certain amount of time when training. I CAN'T BEND TIME. But, with the appropriate amount of effort, I can get my run in quicker if I'm running for miles. So there, the key to my psyche. It could totally work in reverse too, just not for my brain. :goodvibes:

PoohsPal
11-03-2008, 09:00 AM
nono - Great job on gettign those miles in!!

I prefer miles to time, because there seems to be no reward for running faster on a timed run. DH has set up a new policy fro his solo runs adn I think I may follow. You set a goal pace. If you are meeting that on teh way out, you turn around a a pre-determined point. For example, if he's doing a 45 min run, we would usually run just over 4 miles during that time. So, before the run, he will tell himself that he gets to turn-around at the 2 mile mark if he's doing a 10 min pace. If he keeps that pace up, he only has a 40 min run. So the faster he goes, the more minutes he can cut off his run. It's got to be a significant goal pace, though.

WOo hoo!! I ordered some patches from goengo.com (http://www.goengo.com) last week. The stick on your shoe or insole wherever it rubs. For me, I put it on the rub spot in my orthodics. It's like a really smooth teflon. Between that, a few rest days on teh blister and a band aid that stuck well, I was golden Saturday. DId my 12-miler in 2:14 without any irritation. Yay!!!!!!

BTW, teh good band aid was Band-Aids's blister bandage. They stay on for several days (yes, you're supposed to leave them on that long). With the right blister, they work wonders. However, tehy have a medicated pad that swells up. Most of the time, it's extra cushioning. A few times, though, I have found it creates more pressure and irritates teh spot. So, if you use tehm, put them on when you have several hours (or overnight) pre-run, so that you can tell if it will help or hurt before you run.

Great pics, Rozzie!!! You look so cute in your running skirt :cheerleader:

Sorry for being MIA again. Partly it was my subscription to the thread getting dropped again :wassat: and the rest was being too busy!!

I did do my six mile run this past weekend. It was a frustrating run. We picked a park we had walked at before but for a run, it stunk big-time. It was a gravel type trail and it has several harsh slants in it that made my left knee hurt. I also tied a shoe too tight and got a very bad pain on the front of my ankle. It bruised and looked like I had bruised a vein or something. I had to walk more on my last mile because of it

Anyway, I am hoping very much to have a good 14 miler this weekend. I am overdue and I will be sure to pick a spot that is good for running!! :thumbsup2:

Today, I spent all day in the Cullman area attending a funeral for my SIL's dad. I am glad to be home but I feel so bad for her losing her dad :( I truly cannot imagine how hard it must be!!!!

Scott had a party ticket and got to see me several times in the race inside MGM. Even saw me at the finish too. Kinda special as this was the first race of mine he has attended. The after party was great this year, hardly any waits for anything. Some DisneyRunning folk said they rode TSM 4 times in a row without getting off, but finally their hands got tired.

Carrie, I really thought this race was too late for me. I am usually in bed by 830 pm at the latest. I was surprised that I stayed up till 0200, well then again I had a big ole' power nap before hand. Were you really tired for last year's race?

In case anyone is in the mood to shop for winter running stuff this morning, Skirtgoddess has a code out! The code is DisneyR and it gets you 15% off. The re/de capritightsskirts thingys are real popular on DisneyRunning, everyone swears by them over there (of course they are already out of my size), oh and the courage shirts are real popular too. I myself am going to get another black skirt (commitment) and the mayan blue (that just sounds fast for some reason :D) courage shirt. It's part of my Christmas, it's nice having the agreement that I buy what I want and put a sticker from Mr. Roz under the tree.

We wre teh farthest building from CH. Seemed forever. I think I hated taht I had to walk around teh parking lot. First place we have ever disliked on site. In fact, next time I reserve SSR, I will likely request not Paddock or Grand Stands, adn I have never made a request before. lol, we loved Carousel. Loved taking teh bridge to CH. That was was fine. Okay gotta question, how many times a week do you run? I currently only run 3x a week. 2 off days, 2 cross training days. This is my dilemma, I really feel like I could run more now, and want to run more. So I am thinking of doing this.

M-Run (short)
Tues-Crosstrain
Wed-Run (short)
Thurs-Run
Fri-Crosstrain
Sat-LR

The Penguin plan has Wed as a off day. And am I the only one that hates XT? I think I'm going back to Yoga and I will enjoy that more. I hate the stair machines at the gym. :blech:

I'm still alive, girls!!! I had a confidence issue Saturday. I did my 14 mile training run that Carrie was so interested in. I did great for the first ten miles (I was flying high), then I did okay for the next two miles and then....I walked the last two miles...to my great chagrin (and feeling so low). I started out feeling so confident and by the end, I was totally second guessing my ability to do a marathon  In my defense, the reason I slowed down to a walk was that the bruised nerve from the week before started acting up again around mile 11 and I just felt it was getting worse. That and my hip knees and ankles were mad at me - I don't know why :rotfl2:

The funny thing is, that as I got more distance from the run, I started to feel better about myself and reached for the positive. It was my longest run ever and I recuperated almost immediately from doing more than a half-marathon :D I barely feel any tightness in my knees going down stairs and no soreness sitting down or getting up. This is a clear sign that I have a more advanced fitness level. So, I have been working at rebuilding confidence now.

I really wish I could do the October trip that y'all are discussing...I don't think we can since we are going to HHI in June but I am not going to rule it out yet.
So, I AM going to keep forging ahead to my first marathon in 2009 - YAY!

Rozzie, I was surprised at how good I felt when I went to a Mon-Fri schedule of 5 days in a row running with 2 days off for the summer. I vote for you to give it a try -- do an extra 2 or 3 miler for a couple weeks and see what you think! :cheerleader: As for cross-training, I don't do it, unless you count carrying the kids around. I think yoga is a cross-training, and probably one of the best for runners. Just an opinion, but yoga seems to right a lot of tightness caused by running.

Oh Lisa, I so look up to you for attempting the Full. I know you are going to do awesome. I can't imagine doing 26.2 miles, much less 14 that you just did this weekend. Secretly you are motivating me to consider giving it a try though. I know Scott is doing the 1/2 in 2010, there is this little devil on my shoulder telling me I should go for the full in 2010. Every time I read one of your posts I feel myself inching for toward it. Go Lisa! :cheerleader:

Nono, I think I am going to go for more running days. Probably get a yoga DVD just to do at home on the XT days. My gym only has classes in the morning when I'm working, and the night classes at private studio's are a arm and a leg.

I cross train on my recumbent bike and do strength training. I agree with nono (a common theme :p) that yoga and strength training are very good cross training tools for runners. I especially try to focus on all the muscles that attach to the knees and protect the knees while running :thumbsup2:

Guiness is a great beer, esp. for women. High in iron. And not too high in carbs without resorting to GMO. But, seriously, on tough races, I chant: "Beer. Beer. Beer." Out loud. Makes a lot of runners laugh. Makes a lot of them run faster too. I love .

OK, Lisa, that's weird. My H had one at dinner tonight too! :biggulp:

Oh, I didn't know if everyone is aware of this tool from Runner's World:

http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/smartcoach/0,7148,s6-238-277-278-0-0-0-0,00.html?starf=&lrdy=0&slen=16&trainstart=ds1226905242813&startf=checkforward&hour=0&mins=0&secs=0&rlen=fivk&rdst=fivk&mpwe=11&diff=mod#definitions

It'll put together training plans for you up to 16 weeks out. I love it because it shows you different levels of training with just a click of a button. Since I can't sleep tonight, I just checked my 16 week plan against their moderate plan, and I'm being a bit wussy total miles wise, but I'll be running my training runs faster than it would want me to be doing.

So, I'm thinking that'll even things out. I'll find out at the Porncess, eh? ;)

Ooh, cool, nono! I was awake for good at 4:20am :( so I am now playing on your training plan. It even let me put in a 9 week training plan to prepare for my marathon!

The longer you have to prepare though, the harder it works you. MfM is more realistic for someone like me. The LR's on a 16 week plan toward the end on Runner's World look like this: 14, 16, 5, 18, 20 16, 6, 20, 12, 8 and then the 26.2 :scared07: I don't think I can manage that kind of mileage

You've already unlocked the key! And without a full-night's sleep. :rotfl2: I think what's great about the tool is that you can use it to your benefit just to see what other coaches would do with you. And, I love that you can do a shorter than 16 week plan. I used it last summer for a 2 week plan to get ready for my 10 mi sand run, and while it wasn't my best result (how could it be with a 2 week prep!), it gave me a way to do the best with what little time I had.

Also, I will say this again for the record: training for a 1/2 marathon is way different than training for a marathon. So realize, I'm always approaching this in terms of the Porncess...not anything else. :)

nono

OK, Dad talking ;):

Maybe, maybe not. If you combine it with the body-sensing you've developed in your years of running (in other words, knowing when to back off or pour it on more), you might be surprised at how closely you could follow it. But again, realize, I'm not looking at this for anything past a 1/2 marathon length. And usually not a 16 week plan. And not past "moderate" mode. :goodvibes:

I do agree in part with you nono that it encourages good mid-week training runs too. I really liked how it gave me a tempo run pace to shoot for and a long run pace. It was geared to my 3 hour half marathon pace and I really appreciate knowing the paces I should shoot for. In fact, I used it this am for my quasi 2 mile tempo run. :rotfl2: Its all I had time for but I ended up doing a 12:35 pace instead of my usual 13 - 13:30 pace :D

Dad's right. RW articles just don't seem geared to racing my way would be a much better way of putting it.

Got my Porncess Diary today too. Too cute. I am really getting stoked. :)

Lisa good luck with your own little Marathon this weekend. The thought of what you are going to do exhausts me.

Speaking of RW, I got my first 2 magazines in the mail this week. I really liked the articles, maybe not so much the training regimens. There was a really good article about why Marathoners have dropped dead. It is a question that has plagued me for many years. Very informative and really interesting. (Just to relax everyone, running is still very good for you, LOL ;))

Carrie, if I had done what you did this year, I would feel top of the world. You have accomplished so much. :thumbsup2:

Still got the pain in the a$$ cough. The coughing is irritating but the worst part now is that my stomache muscles and chest hurt from all the coughing. It is getting better and not coughing as much. I'm really po'd that I didn't get out this week except for that one mile walk I did with Maggie. I have the grandkids tomorrow for the day so I'll be getting a lot of CT done. I haven't seen them since we got back so it will be fun. If it stops raining tomorrow after the kids are gone, maybe I can get out for a little while. Sunday is training day for Maggie. After being away from her for 2 weeks she really needs to go badly. She's being the bad child and trying to see if mommy feels guilty for leaving her for so long by doing things she knows she isn't suppose to do. She is driving me :silly:

BECAUSE RUNNING IS GOOD FOR YOU!!!!! :thumbsup2::thumbsup2::thumbsup2:

Didn't you just say that 2 paragraphs back in the same post? It's also good at postponing dementia, which is really good, 'cause you and I are sure gonna get it. :D But have no fear. We'll be at OKW sittin' at the Suitcase, after a run, and trying to remember Capt'n Wahoo's name. And telling the young whippersnappers what it was like "in the old days." And ordering Sultry Seahorses....

Soooo, how safe do you feel when you run alone? To be honest, I used to feel fine, as long as it's daylight and I had a cellphone. Yesterday though changed things. A girl was abducted from a parking lot and found in the lot behind yesterday. Raped and murdered. All this took place less than a mile from my running path uptown. It's a safe community, a false sense of security I suppose. I try to run around people, but it's a long path and I can't say that there is always people around.

On the other hand, I don't want to live my life in fear. A victim to fear. I just can't live my life that way. So I compromised with Scott, and promised I wouldn't run alone until this psycho is found. Usually I am with my running buddies, but sometimes our schedules conflict. I guess I'm just talking out loud. It is freaky to think, how your life can be over in a instant like that. We could also die in car accidents, and I still drive. I just don't know the happy medium. I actually like to run alone, alone with my thoughts sort of thing.

Just wondering what safety things the other Peacocks take while running alone.

I usually run with Renee. And around here, in the off-season, the cops stalk me (for real, and I'm hoping in a good way).

Read The Gift of Fear by Gavin DeBecker. He's got great advice on how to listen to your instinct to be more aware when something's going wrong.

Advice from my dear departed Dad, who lived most of his life in bad areas:
Don't always run at the same time and in the same, predictable path. If you always run by the weirdo's house at 5 pm on T/Th, when he's going to go off, he knows when to come get you...if you're just an "occasional" and not a "predictable" you are less likely a target (not completely safe, just tipping the odds in your favor).

Some folks run with pepper spray. I'm afraid I'd end up hurting myself with it. I've also taken self-defense courses in the past, but just hope that if my time comes, being crazy myself might just save me...

GAIL: Warm liquids will help the cough; cold drinks will aggravate it. I have even been known to drink hot water when away from home to calm my esophagus. :)

ROZZIE: I agree with Scott!!!! I realize Dad/nono has good advice but that is a lot close for comfort!! My sister's husband bought her a taser and she had a background check and training on how to effectively protect herself with it. :scared07: Pepper spray is a good option also. Please be safe!!!!!!!!!!!!

NONO: I am glad the cops are stalking you :rotfl2:

LLLOVELL: Laura is in the house! :w00t: I, for one, would like to hear how you are

I am sleep deprived from my teen youth trip but still alive. I got a half hour worth of sleep on Thursday night. We slept on the floor at the Atlanta youth's church and the bus came and picked us up at 6am 5am my time) What kept me sleepless was two other sponsors that snored like freight trains all night long :blech:

I am glad I went and it was great to see all the spiritual growth taking place in these teens. We were kept supremely busy, however, and my free time was partly taken by over scheduling or running late. I did not run after all as I would not have had time to clean up and change etc... Instead, I did a brisk walk patrolling the grounds during what was left of the free time. I signed up for this duty knowing it was a good chance to get a workout.

Anyway, I plan a bit longer than usual run tomorrow to help make up for it

Training question:

Who does tempo runs, and what do you do for your Tempo run?

I did my first ever one today, and don't know if I did it right. Just went at a faster pace for a shorter distance. Tried to do 3 miles under 30 minutes. I did it, but it was hard up the hills. I haven't run that fast since that 5K last September. Anyhoo, I don't even know if I did it right LOL. Just seems like every book I pick up it talks about the importance of doing them.

Lisa, you are a braver soul than me. Just think--- you are going to have some great karma for sacrificing your time for such a good purpose. :thumbsup2:

Laura/Carrie-- thanks for updating us on the course. :) Not that I know the Jan 1/2 route, but it sounds fun. So basically we hit every park except MK, right?

Oh, and I forgot the number 1 reason why nothing goes wrong when I'm running -- 'cause I am always wearing my RoadID, complete with my Blue Cross/Blue Shield info right on it. It's like insurance -- have it, you'll never need it. The day you don't...... So, wear you ROADID! No excuses:

Been doing my 7 mi every-other-day thing. So far, so good. No tempos right now Rozzie. Best advice I got from old farts in the masters running forums is to make sure you do a mi warm up and mi cool down (in other words, if it is a 4 mi run, only mi 2 & 3 would be at tempo pace). My tempo paces aren't usually more than 15-25 sec/mi faster than my averages for the last couple weeks. Does that make sense?

Not to be tacky and quote myself lol but Carrie found out over the weekend that the Princess route is the same as the 1/2. Starts at the MK (but 5 miles or so around on the roads first) and then in the park and through the Castle. So - they must have changed their minds if it was going to be a different route than the 1/2.

Going under the bridge and back up at the Contemporary about killed me!

I am doing ok ladies. Gaining weight instead of losing. Not exercising enough to get ready for this race, so the Princess will have to be mine to finish. Work is just awful. Quite stressful to be honest and I think I have been stress eating without even thinking about it. Finding time to exercise hasn't been my thing.

I am feeling blah today - so down on myself but the reality is that I haven't made time to train properly so who knows what the 1/2 will bring. I am very excited to see so many of you doing so well!

According to the rep at teh expo, they changed it because there were so many complaints about a princess race that did not go through teh castle.

nono - I thought your biggest problem with it was crowding. My guess is that this race will not be nearly as big as January, so it should not be as bad.

Personally, I hate the last half of teh marathon course adn am very grateful that it's changing. Now, part of that hate is because I've already run 13 when I hit it, but that stretch to AK is long an bo-ring! The paths in AK hurt my feet. The stretch to MGM has 2 big hills disguised as over passes. Nothing to really get me excited. JMO.

Even with less entrants, it'll be way crowded because of the start. Also, a good portion of the race will still be crowded and canted to the right hand side, as there were lots of stretches only in the right hand lane -- not two lanes. That's asking for ITBS.

I'm out. Not interested in doing that again. To do so would mean that all my criticism was just gripes. It wasn't. Running through the Castle? We need to have a lousy course for that 10 sec????? I don't get it.

I'll start inquiring about my refund now, as the only reason I was giving Disney another chance was because of the promise of starting at the Speedway with the hope of loosening things up quickly. That's the only reason I was willing to waste my husband's money on something like this.

Sorry Peacocks. :(

There are only 10,000 people allowed to run Princess vs 20,000 for Jan 1/2.

I just heard from my Disney source that Disney allowed them to run through MK. Disney doesn't like events at MK and that's why it wasn't set that way before. The course is still being finalized so I will know more today or tomorrow.

I took a look at mapmyrun, and it would be fairly easy for anyone with a little imagination to plot a variety of courses that wouldn't be the same old same old.

I did one that started at Richard Petty, went through the MK, down the back road to AK and the finished up nicely in 13.1 at The Studios. Surely others closer to the race would be even better equipped to plot routes.

Hmmm--sunrise is about 6:45 a.m. that day...and as one who runs often before sunrise, it's light out before the sun actually "rises". I checked this site for the data points.
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/astronomy.html?n=867&month=3&year=2009&obj=sun&afl=-11&day=1

A lap at the racetrack would take a bit of time -- seems like not too much darkness to really deal with...at most 10 min worth for the front of the packers.

Look - it's their race, they can do what they want. However, I bought with the premise it was one thing, so I'm hoping they realize that it isn't what I bought and give me a "no hassle" return. It would be great for them to come up with something that isn't just a repeat course. If they do, I'm willing to give it a chance. Otherwise, it'll just be the kids doing their races, I guess. Or maybe we'll change our dates all together.

DH and I were on teh indoor track. After a bit, a guy starts running. The man is all muscle and blows by us like we were standing still. ALways makes my pride take a dive. Yes, I am faster than a few of you here, have finished 3 full marathons adn I still let that stuff get to me. Anyway, he stops and starts walking with his wife. As we pass he calls out, "Aren't you guys ever gonna' stop?" We were blown away. the man was 10x's faster than us, but impressed by our time out there. You know what? We were only doing a 40 min run. Basically, teh shortest distance we go.

So, you know what? All of you have done more than that and this Mr. Muscles would have been as impressed by all of you as I am. DOn't think it's easy, just because you're slow.

I did realize this. Sadly, for me, my lung capacity is stronger than my body and joints are. I swear I could keep going and maybe go faster but everything begins to hurt. That 12 mile mark on my last LR really took its toll. I hope my 16 miler is better. I do believe I still have room to grow my fitness though: I just have to grow it in smaller increments

Ladies, I guarantee you what you do is much harder than what I do. Hence, why I don't want to do it!

I'm telling you - walking 4 with Gail almost put me O-U-T. I could have run 7-10 mi and not felt that bad... I swear it's a dirty little secret that the elites try to keep to themselves: running faster is much easier.

The hard part is training to get faster. Esp. if your lungs aren't ready. I think that's been my big change this year...my lungs are really in shape now, and the body simply can follow.

Sorry nono....should have walked my normal faster pace, but that still wouldn't have helped you. I'm just waiting for my lungs to be ready because my body has been fine so far. And now it is going to take a bit longer because of this coughing crap. I was going to try and get out today but I slept forever this morning. Well, it seemed like forever anyway. I sue do hate being sick.

Gail - If you slept that late, your body needed it/ Hope you are doign ebtter soon!!!!

LIsa - Ugh, I hope that it was just a bad day for you adn your 16-miler is not as big of a struggle. Is it time to increse walking intervals?

I know where you are coming from. I think I'm at least 2 years out from building enough base to run a marathon, and even then, I don't know that I'll do it. I'm targeting an 18 mile race next Sept/Oct and see how that goes. It might be too soon for me to try it, and I'm mentally willing to drop it from my calendar if the training is going poorly.

Speaking of changing minds, rumor is the P&PP's are canceled also. Gailaroo guess we gotta make other plans to celebrate that night?

This is all kinda weird. :confused24:

I can't see that it would be a good idea for them to cancel the party because of all the money they have collected already from the registrations for the race. It would be a lot of aggrevaton on their part to have to refund the money and a lot of unhappy people who were looking forward to the party.

Here is the new official Disney site for the weekend. They no longer have anything about the race course on here, but they do mention tickets for a post-race Party. They are not calling it the P&PP anymore. So looks like they are having a party still but we just don't know the theme.

My point exactly because you and I will both see that route as part of our full in January. I can't believe they would make it the same. Laura will be doing it twice too, right?

Yep. I would be doing it twice.

I just wanted to wish everyone the best of luck in your 1/2 Marathons! Reading a bit on this thread made me wish I could be there to cheer you on. And it's also making me feel very jealous!

I'd been avoiding looking at the Marathon threads because I knew I couldn't possibly participate after my AT surgery last March. :silly: Heh, 7 months post and I can walk 2 miles at 3.3mph, but still struggling with strength in my leg so can't do much more than that yet. I am on the home stretch though and my schedule calls for getting up to 4 miles at a time by the end of Feb and then holding there for 4-6 months or so to really condition my foot, ankle and leg back to regular walking. I have a 10k in my plans for August '09.

IF and only IF that is successful, I might consider training again for a 1/2, maybe the 2010 Princess (:ermm: er did I spell that right?) is in my future. :woohoodance:

At least I'm getting to the point where I'm feeling the surgery was the right thing to do! I can actually go 15 minutes on the elliptical now without pain! I haven't been able to do that since Feb '07! :yahoo:

And I'm including this guy just because he's cute! :broc:

Hey there Nancy!!! Good to see you.

It sounds like your recovery is going well, even if it feels very slow at times. I am glad to hear that! Continued success on that front and you will be outpacing me in no time :)

Hope all other things are going well for you and yours.

I haven't heard back from my contacts(official and unofficial) at Disney. Add that with pretty new website with course info remove and "just check back later" Disney line, I don't think they know what they are going to do.

Good to see you Nancy! FYI - originally, porncess started asone of my infamous typos. Nono had a great definition of it standing for teh overuse of teh princess theme, though, and it stuck.

Way to go on sticking with teh exercise, even though it's been a long slow road. :cheerleader: Feel free to stick around and let us know your progress.

Thanks Robert for the update. Hopefully we will hear something soon!

Hey Nancy! Keep on the steady path to recovery, and I bet you will be stronger than ever!! :goodvibes:

Speaking of recovery, my hamstrings been hurting this week, so I've taken it slow. Lots of walking, stretching, and they are feeling better. Supposed to be 29 for our LR tomorrow morning, right now I am counting 3 layers that I'll be wearing. We don't like it this cold down here! :blech: Going to to run most of it, I'll back off If I start feeling them again.

You know I'm really hoping that because it turns out this "injury" was just brewing for years. All the subtle signs that I just brushed off before are now gone.

I'm going to let you guys inspire me as I head into the next phase and remind me of why I went thru this! :)

Thanks for the warm welcome back!

kathleena,

You hang in there. You'll heal!!!

Out for 7 1/4 mi this morning to get rid of the sickness that the rest of the family has infected me with...those rats! Felt like dreck mi 1-2, felt great the rest of the way. Left most of my cold in a trashcan at about mi 3. Sorry, but I'll never be one of those runners who can do a snotrocket  -- I dutifully packed a bunch of tissues and used 'em all and seriously, left my cold in North Wildwood. :woohoodance:

Hoping all are having good runs this weekend! (p.s., even if you only run 1/1000 of your outing, I consider you a runner.)

I did 7 miles yesterday in the bitter cold, or what's cold as crap to me. ;) I think the temp at the start was hovering around 32. My hammies did great though, did some extra stretching at the end and no soreness today. I guess I learned I may just no be up yet to back to back runs. Drats, as I really liked doing the schedule that way. Oh well, it could always be worse. :)

In other news, went to a kick butt running store yesterday (Pensacola Laura) and scored some shoes on sale. Oh yeah, and some capri's too. They felt great on and they were 50% off, thought they would be good for when it's between skirt and tights weather. The staff were awesome and so knowledgeable, and they had every running gadget, supplement, outfits, insoles known to man. PLUS they had their own cardiac lab in back of store. A cardiologist on staff perfomrs stress tests, Echo's, and several other important performance tests. I didn't want to leave this place, it was better than a theme park, LOL! :D So worth the hour drive.

Way to go, Rozzie, on the seven mile run :cheerleader: Nono's right, I believe you will go very far with this :goodvibes:

Well, I did my 16 miler on Friday and dang it was COLD  It was not 32 though! It was low 40's and very windy. Rick only lasted about 5.5 miles and he hopped into the car to listen to music, LOL! By the end, I thought I was close to frostbite because my hands (even in gloves) were so cold! In comparison to my 14 miler, I think I did okay. This time I did a 3/2 - more walk than run. It worked out to about the same speed as the 14 mile run. I was very achy though, by the 13.5 mile mark and walked most of the last couple miles again. It is still hard to conceptualize another ten miles added on but I am very determined to see it through :thumbsup2:

I am still working on nutrition too. This time, I was starving by the end of the run. I had chopped up a traditional clif bar into bite size pieces and it was not enough. Not sure if it was the cold or what. Also, still suffering from foot cramps a lot. I ate banana as part of my brekkie that day and another as a pre run snack about an hour or so before the run. I also drank water regularly??

nono

Lisa,

I find I need way more water than the average Joe. Probably approaching the hyponatremia levels. Really. But unless my urine is very close to clear, I find that I get all sorts of myofascial problems: ITB & PF pain, to name two. That's why I supplement with clif shot bloks and coconut water (besides the fudge :thumbsup2:) when I'm doing runs longer than 7 miles. I find if I start drinking at mile 3, my body can process and use the liquids without filling up my bladder enough to matter. So basically rely on the supplements during the run to keep me from possibly keeling over. So far, so good. :D

Good luck tinkering with the fueling-on-the-run piece of the puzzle. You figure out what works best for you!

LIsa - WOo hooo!!!!! :cheerleader::cheerleader: I know this sounds dumb, but are your shoes too tight? That's what does it fo rme. I do mine so loose that you'd think my heels would blister, but they don't and it works well for me. :confused24:

Nancy - :tink: SOunds liek a very good sign. Let's keep hoping that you will be much stronger!!!

Rozzie - You are an ACE! I have been sooooo impressed with your times! You are gonna' kick porncess hiney! :rotfl2:(yeah, not very DIsney of me.) Be good to those hammys, tehy can cause a world of hurt.

nono - Hope you're feeling much better!!! lol. I can't do teh snot rocket. Scott put grommets in soem wash cloths, so I sub tehm out for a sponge int eh winter and have a snot rag on my arm. Tacky, but I go through Kleenex like crazy and this is much easier fro me.

Saturday was teh dreaded 16-miler. Dreaded because we had done 13 pretty hard on SUnday, my hammy was acting up, Scott's achillies was acting up a bit, it was 24 degrees (coldest run this year), it was a Yak Trax run and those can be hard on teh feet, and we had not done a 14-miler due to SAT, so teh jump to 16 seemed huge. Yes, we had plenty of excuses to not pull this one off. There were a few times I told myself perhaps I'd walk. (Maybe on the pair of bridges where it was snow over rutted ice) Then, I told myself that if I walkd then, it'd be easier to walk durign the marathon. I really want to PR or at least get close to our first marathon this year. I had told myself all week that I would not push if I risked hurting anything. Well, everything pretty much hurt equally, so, per my own test of when to push and when not to, it was safe to keeep going. Our pace was far from stellar, but we did it and were fairly consistent, except for teh pair of bnidges. My hammy did MUCH better than expected too! I am so stinking proud of us. That was a huge milestone.

Where's Gail?

Laura - Things gettign any better in teh training dept for you?
