. Callouses are your friend.
Nope. You and Roz are dead wrong on this one. Callouses simply mean you are wearing shoes you shouldn't. :p
Couldn't resist. And, it's TRUE, too.
So, if you look at pure numbers, today sucked. Luckily, I'm old, so that's not where I stop. And, I'm certainly no pollyanna, so take this for what it is worth.
You spend a year as a runner, training (or drinking, whatever...) and you try to have things set up in your favor. But things come together at the end of the journey for a year., And it is there for you...for the taking.
Then, in the last 12 hours, the diarrhea fairy visits. About 10x (not that I was counting). :oweye: Luckily, our hotel was next to a 24 hr WAWA (soft pretzels) and I had packed a coconut water. Also, WAWA coffee is fabulous, so it was the ultimate test before leaving. I made myself a deal -- if I had to use the port o potty in that way, I wasn't starting.
It all worked out. That's the non-pollyanna point. More tomorrow. I have to get some sleep. Lots of stories, though I only had 1 "date" today on the course.

Congratulations nono! I never look at just numbers (especially since I don't even know yours).
And I know you have you feelings about running shoes but to be fair the summers in middle school and high school that I mainly went barefoot I got some nice callouses then. People who play guitar get callouses on their fingers. Most people have a callous on their finger where they rest their pen/pencil. They happen. Mine are mainly in areas where my foot most often strikes the ground more than from repeated blisters. I think they would be there even if I ran barefoot.
My race shirt is almost finished. I just need to put the race and date on it. I'm planning on wearing it tomorrow during a run to make sure the letters aren't irritating.

I was going to say the same thing. I haven't had a callouses in a long while, but I would get them in the summers being barefoot all the time. (my mother had to beg me to wear shoes on the farm...) Even now, in the summer when I am always outside barefoot, my heels harden up. I think of it as natures way of providing protection on my feet. Now I do think black toes, blister issues, etc are a shoe issue. Or at least I haven't had a black toe or blister since I went to a lighter shoe. (Mizuno Precision) Now if that isn't jinxing myself, I don't know what is!
Nono, I wouldn't worry about the results. I think it's very rare to have a perfect race day. You know, trained up, no injuries/issue areas (I am learning not to use word "injured"), fueled right, body cooperating, winds at our back, no humidity, etc etc etc. Just think of it as a loooong tempo run for Boston. :thumbsup2: Better racing days are in your future. Heck you might get that NYQ time now at OUC. :)
I am VERY happy to report 5 miles this morning. No major pain, just the same tightness. My sports doc emailed me back last night and gave me some pointers to do before and after running--so I took that as the green light to run, or at least try. ;) (he suggested heat, triggerpoint, roll, run, ice) Did not one but 2 yoga videos yesterday and detailed cleaned the oven. Going nuts! The knot was smaller last night, so I agreed to meet Mr. Roz half way on his 10 miler this morning. Just tight, but actually feels better now after running. My magic man is working me in this afternoon to do some more work on it. :fingerscrossed: Staying positive!

Quoting myself because after reading the replies below, I thought I must have mistyped.

I wasn't saying go barefoot, I was saying that shoes don't fit right. And, for the record, I feel "street" shoes are bigger offenders than running shoes. The reason for the tongue sticking out was to be humorous because it's HARD to find the right shoe, or if one doesn't the right sock/shoe combo to minimize the callouses. But, nope, callouses aren't my friend, and with proper footwear and decent footcare*, I say they don't have to exist, esp. as a chronic condition. Even for runners.
*I'm amazed when I talk to runners who never do a darn thing for their feet. Meaning -- no massage, no soak, no cream or oil once in awhile... :confused24: They are the first/last thing in the chain of what we use to do what we like to do. And people treat them like &^%.
So the race, it almost all worked out....but not quite. I haven't downloaded my splits as I'm not home yet, but it was hard to know what pace I was traveling in the early miles as my Garmin was having a hard time getting a lock on my position. I wasn't the only one -- lots of "It's flaking out -- can't tell my pace" comments, followed by the general consensus of "just run easy." I think, though, that we all were moving a bit faster than we had planned through the early miles.
After we got through the rollers of West Philadelphia, my right leg was a bit riled up, so I purposefully rested miles 15-20ish. That was a good plan, because around Mi 17, where we go over the Falls Bridge and back, I suddenly got nauseous. Very...it wasn't going away, and I had visions of getting ill on the side of the race course. :( Having raced as a kid (swim) after an incident like that, I wasn't happy, 'cause this would have been a whole lot longer than 100 meters to the finish! So, I walked about 45 seconds, and then restarted, and I felt fine. I wonder if someone didn't smell badly around me that I wasn't really aware of, but it was affecting me. 'Cause I felt better right away! Freaky.
So my plan was to push the pace back up to normal range from the last turn in Manayunk...and that worked very well, until I think Mi 23. Up to then, I was just about going to snag my 3:59:59...everything was going to work out! :yahoo: I wasn't too tired, felt like I had fueled and watered right despite my GI issues. The only thing that wasn't great was that I was getting cold, but that was manageable for another 5K.
But, then my quad & ITB got remarried. Shotgun ceremony. I had promised myself I could walk through the last few water stops as I had enough time for my goal...and I finally picked up this guy I followed for about 15 miles that had a PowerBar shirt on which he had written "Follow me to the finish." He was from Rockland Co., NY and we chatted the next two miles. I told him he really pulled me along throughout, and he was thrilled that his home made shirt (from 9 years ago) had a positive effect on one runner.:goodvibes: He had missed his goal and was just doing a recovery run in, and I joined him, as my thigh wasn't worth risking. Hence, my one "date."
Anyway, I crossed in 4:09:22, or something like that, and I was freakin' cold!!!! I walked about 6 blocks to meet my family, and here, there was no shirt or sweatshirt in my bag to get into...and the sun went in and the wind started kicking! I felt terrible, but moreso for those still out on the course. Mr Nono luckily had layers on and gave me his Mickey/Goofy/Donald sweatshirt. That, along with a mylar skirt, took me down to the Reading Terminal Market and the Beer Garden. Several other runners found there way in, but it was uncrowded, and the family had sushi, a Po Boy, and treats from the Termini Bakery. :thumbsup2:
Our hotel was a 1 mile walk from the corrals, and right on the race course. It was also right across the street from packet pick up. It wasn't my first choice, but I'm really glad we stayed there. It was the perfect "clubhouse" for the weekend.
Funniest things about yesterday --
* At around mile 11, I hear someone yell my name. Darn if it isn't two women from town...we always pick the same races without knowing it and always see each other on course. They were doing the 1/2 yesterday. It was so cool to see them. Esp. in a crowd of 23,000 or whatever it was.
* Two signs that really cracked me up. One said, "Go, Complete Stranger." And the other said, "If someone tells you that you are 'almost there' before Mile 25, PUNCH THEM." :D
* I did get to High Five the Mayor at the start. My other choice, if I had been on the other side of the corral, was Bart Yasso. :)
Would I recommend the race to others? Sure thing. Can it be a target race? Totally. Probably, out of the marathons I've run so far, the only one I wouldn't recommend as a target race is Twin Cities. Just too many people and only two corrals: Elite and Unwashed Masses. :rotfl2: Also they had too many potholes on the course.

Nono-
Thanks for sharing your race experiences - I really enjoyed that.
Just back from the doctor - either IT Band or stress fracture. MRI next week.
Wants me to keep things low-impact until we get those results back. Unfortunately, I really don't have anything low-impact - just a pair of shoes and the road.

Congrats on the race nono! You are amazing to do it with the GI issues!
So I broke down and called an orthopedic doctor about the hip today. Last night I had convinced myself I should just suck it up, but then this morning my OCD internet searching turned up a long thread of women on Runners World that had similar symptoms to mine...and they all had stress fractures of the pelvis. So yeah, major flip out! I know I can't diagnose myself via the internet, but I had the realization that it's probably better to see a doctor now and know for sure, rather than risk it. I'm trying not to be depressed until I actually see the doctor Wednesday morning, but yeah, it's not a great place I'm at right now.

Heck Nono, if I dealth with everything you were dealing with that day, I would been lucky to make it in by dark. I am very proud of the way you hung in there AND had a great time.
Is there any member of Team Peacock that is 100% healthy?
John, I vote ITB. Seriously it would seem unlikely to me you could get a stress fx with your weekly mileage. Sounds like your ITB may not like life right now. I also don't think it's a stress fx since you say the pain comes and goes. To me, a stress fx is constant pain. I am not a ortho doc, but did play a ortho nurse in a former life. ;)
Same for you Beth, to be a pelvic fx it would have to be something that is getting worse with every run. Let me tell you, a hip issue can make you feel like someone did slice your pelvis off. :(
I think it's very wise for the both of you to get things checked out though.
I went to the sports doc today and good news and bad news. Good news is I should be fine by race. Bad news is I may not be able to train hard before then. Calf is "full of knots". Knots on knots on knots. I seriously almost fainted when he was trying to manipulate them out. Like I saw stars, worst pain I have ever felt in my life hands down. Have to go back for 5 more visits. HOWEVER, he said he is seeing 3 other runners right now with the exact thing and they are all still running. He thinks that I just have to be more diligent with stretching, rolling etc. I already am a freak about it, I may have to just duct tape a triggerpoint roller to my leg 24/7. I am staying positive. The good news is that I am going to Disney World and seeing my good friends no matter what. :hug1:

Roz-thanks for the words of encouragement. I realize that at around 20 miles a week, with cross training, on an otherwise healthy 28 year old woman who is OCD about stuff like making sure she gets enough calcium and protein, a stress FX is highly unlikely. But I just have that sort of brain that goes to the worst possible thing first (for example, if DH is late it MUST be a car accident) so I would rather have it looked at. I'm hoping it's just a strain or something.
I'm sorry to hear about your calf. Looks like you'll be rolling every hour on the hour?
jrb--I hope you get good news at the doctor too!
Mr. Roz
11-22-2010, 05:01 PM
It appears that I am the only healthy Peacock around these days.:fingerscrossed: (Mental health excluded I hope). I realized I just doomed myself to injury on making that statement alone.:silly: . May have to change the thread temporarily to "Limping Disney"
Seriously though, sorry to hear all the bad news/bad races/bad injuries. I know that all will be better soon.:thumbsup2:
On racing with a Garmin...I have used my watch for races only. I depend on the splits and pace off someone for most of the race. That thinking cost me a a little on an earlier 8K when the runner I was pacing started having a bad run.I used my Garmin for a 10K a few weeks later and am not sold on what I prefer. Any thoughts out there?:listen:
Going a little overboard with the smiles today huh?:scratchchin:
Gotta go make dinner and attend to the infirmed.
Thanks for all the comments on the race...here's the kicker.
My ITB/Quad issue. GONE. I paid for 2 massage sessions, rolled 'till I thought I'd pass out in pain, but apparently what I needed was to bring it to the brink of disaster and back off, like I did yesterday. It's the only thing not hurting tonight.
Running. :headbrickwall: It's a freakin' miracle worker if you can ever figure out its ways.... Double :headbrickwall:.

Beth, I also tend to think the worst. We are so much alike! Its very easy to say "no fx probably" on the other side of keyboard. Heck when I goggled my calf issue I got everything from deadly blood clot, need to write will to compartment syndrome--you will be lucky to/save limb. So yeah Dr. Goggle is scary-but I think its wise for us to research every avenue it could. A educated patient means a enlightened patient. After all, we get one body-and I am going to do everything I can to make sure I am getting best care.
I hope you don't think I was putting "down" your weekly mileage. Sure, people get stress fxs from doing less. Just usually the fx sppears differently. Constant pain that gets worse. But I am also not devaluing your pain....like I said in previous post, a hip issue doesn't have to be a fx to hurt like holy heck. Ask me how I know. I remember laying on the ground in a 18 miler last fall on side of road in tears, refusing to get up. Luckily MR roz was there to beat me with a stick to get me up. In Jan I will tell you another story that changed me...

Nono, running is freaking weird! Like this mornings run, calf felt better after running. After therapy tonight, can barely put pressure on leg.

I didn't think you were putting down the mileage at all. I was just making the point that the rational side of my brain can totally see how this is not likely--but the emotional side, well that's another story! Poor Noel just probably wants a day without tears. He did just ask if he needs to follow me around with a stick though...
I'll remember to ask you the story after we're drinking after Goofy!:biggulp:

Mr. Roz, I think if you can judge your speed, it's best not to rely on a Garmin. I am notoriously bad about being able to accurately judge my speed. I simply can't. Yet. (I have hope!) I can judge effort, but that is so wildly dependent for me on surface, my posture, and the like. So for me, a Garmin, even with its limitations, is necessary for me in a longer race. In a 2 miler or 5K, eh, I'm just trying to run until I die :scared07:, so the watch isn't necessary.

No, Mr Roz you aren't the only healthy Peacock. I've counted myself one of the lucky ones here since I haven't (knock on wood) had any of the injuries that you all have had. Yea, the blister was huge and hurt like hell but it cleared up quickly. And since I had a blister free 8 miler I guess that counts for being healthy. :D

Injured peacock checking in. . .
Monday of marathon week and I ran 20 mins. That's what was on the schedule. It's such a short time (especially given how slow I run) that I sort of wonder what the point is. It did give me a chance to wear my homemade race shirt before the race. It is so cute (I just have to brag)! Peroneus is acting up again.
Sorry Roz but I read your post too quickly to note spelling. Glad you got the clear from your doc.
Nono whenever I'm out on the course I always am annoyed by the "You're almost There"s but then I find those words coming out of my mouth when I stand on the sidelines cheering people on. Exciting about your ITB!

I can't help feeling like I'm doing something wrong. I don't think I should be dealing with injury after injury. Next time I'll take it easier right ;)
5 more days. Weather forecast is back to mostly
sunny with a high of 77 and low of 59. I'm glad my shirt is cute because the rest of me will certainly look like a dork: .compression shorts with bright pink knee high compression socks, two ugly blue knee braces, ACE bandages on the ankles, and an Urkel high water belt. I want to wear tights to cover all but the water belt but sunny upper 70s is just to hot for that. I almost melted in the low 70s. And these tights aren't even lined. I figure though years from now I'll look back and think of how much I pushed through to get there. I just really didn't want to look quite so silly.
And I'm a bit superstitious to show my shirt before the race. (Now how do I do that embarrassed smiley?)

Well, maybe you are doing everything right. :goodvibes:
Is running causing your injuries or simply revealing them? The answer varies by runner. Just something to think about so you don't necessarily feel like you are the problem. Maybe its simply that you are in the middle of a long process.

Lisa - lol. yes, Rick is teh miracle running-attitude-turnaround story of teh century! To think it was only Jan 2009 when he swore he'd never run, right? ;)
Gail - Yay for being blister free! Hope you stay injury free teh rest of training!
nono - Huge congrrats!! What awful conditions for you! You rock! lol about the signs. I ran one half and @ mile 2, someone shouted "I'm not going to lie to you!!!!! You're nowhere near done yet!" Hope your body feels better soon!
John - So sorry abou the doc's diagnosisi. Good luck with the MRIR, hope it's somethign eeasily fixed!!! :hug1:
Roz - :hug1: :hug1: :hug1:Hope you get those knots out soon! BTW, amazing find on the Starbucks SF syrup! :scared07:
Mr. ROz - Good luck dealing with teh injured Roz. ;) ;) Glad you are doing well!
Beth - :hug1:I do hope it's nothign that serious!!! HOpe you didn't get any I told you so's from DH, either. ;)
Craig - Woo hoo fro E doing a race twith you!! BTW, I didn't think of you taking the glory spot, I thought it was good of you to take teh longest leg!
MM- You will eb fine! HOpe this tapeer really does the trick for you and your rock your race!
So, did my 16-miler. Would be good to do a LR not after core. Still, I did it and it was faster than my 14-miler. Was quite sore, though. DOn't think the cold bath offset the nap adn 3-hour car ride. :confused24: Then I go tot listen to my MIL:
"Only 16? SO, it wasn't like the really long one"
"You're sore after a 16-miler after all thhse years of training?"
And I wondered why I avoided girls' weekend for 2 years. Of course, getting yelled at in teh aisle @ TRU was oh-so-fun too!

Nono my peroneus issue I do believe is related to an old sprain. The rest of my problems I equate with doing too much too quickly. If I could increase my mileage as Chi Running guy suggests -- only when I'm ready -- or by only 1% a week as I read in an article in Runners World or take 18 mos to train for the marathon as my sports MD said his informal research suggests (I think they all pretty much come out the same) I do believe I would significantly reduce my injuries. But the way I train now I don't give my muscles and tendons and bones and so forth long enough to adjust to increased stress before putting more on them. Then when I do get injured I still don't feel I am aggressive enough in recovery. But I am not willing to be patient and that's the price I pay. I do appreciate your encouragement.

Calf is "better" and cleared to run. :rocker:
MM, just a nosey question. Why are you racing with water? I will carry a 12 oz plastic bottle of water for the first 10K to fight the water stop crowds (and to make sure I drink enough for the first hour) but after that I just do the water stops. I never want the extra weight. (almost 3 lbs it can be!) Do you usually do the HM with water? :listen: Just whatever you are comfortable with but just wanted to see what your thoughts on it were.
ETA: MM, just trying to help, it seems like you are already having to deal with so much extra stuff for the race!

Ever since the RFTT when I didn't carry my own water and suffered for it I started packing my own water for any race where I'll be running for an hour or more -- from ToT to all three of my halfs. I hydrate frequently especially if it is warm and sunny as it is forecasted to be and I generally find the race provided stops inadequate. I also pack my own gels. I know it is extra weight but it is more important for me to have enough fluids. It makes all the difference in having a good run/race or not. Maybe someday I won't need it but I'd rather be prepared especially since my speed means I'm out on the course longer.
I don't mind the water belt. I wish I could lose the knee and ankle gear. My complaint about the water belt is that it makes my hips/butt look even bigger because of how I wear it.

Not good MM! :( But hopefully she is feeling better by Sunday. Will she be in town the next weekend for the BBQ?
Well I ran 5 miles today. The calf felt great before I ran, tight during the run, and now weird after the run. No sharp shooting pain that I was told that was a sign it was not getting better, but worse. (duh, right?) So I have decided to knock out all speedwork until race and just do easy mileage. It will be a big mystery on how I run, but my new goal is to just be running. I am no longer referring to OUC as my "goal" race, disappointing but hey, that's life.
I still plan to celebrate like a Champ afterwards. :biggulp: Been abstaining from beer for 7 weeks now for the race, so I will really enjoy that beer garden at the finish. :D
Beth, you have inspired Mr Roz and I. We are baking tomorrow, with King Arthurs Flour! Mr Roz is going to try out a carrot cake from Cooking Light and going to use all whole wheat.
Thanksgiving plans for the team? Mr Roz and I are plan hookie!! Too much drama on both sides of family going on, and Thursday is my only day off this week. Work all weekend and really just feel like sticking close to home and vegging. So we are telling each other's family we are going to the other house for the day. Yeah, it's childish, but we like it. :thumbsup2:
MM, I often carry water too in races. For Phila., I picked up a bottle from my team at Mi 14 'cause I didn't like the spacing of the water stops for my Hammer gel ingestion...worked out perfectly.
So, got very ill yesterday afternoon through last night. It was a blast lying on the couch in semi-delerium as a fever took hold having conversations with my Mom who's got dementia...I think she may have asked me if I wanted an ice pack to try to ease my fever symptoms 45-50 times! She couldn't get that I wanted to build my fever to kill whatever bug had taken hold of me. :oweye: (Enduring that was harder than any marathon this year...)
I don't recommend getting ill while having DOMS. I had to dehydrate myself to settle my stomach...then try to get some fluids in me so that the fever could break. Let me say, WOW -- there's a whole 'nuther level of pain past normal DOMS . Good news is the fever breaking and accompanying sweat-fest seems to have done a whole lot of good. I came down the stairs normally this morning!!!

nono--I hope it stays away after this morning! the bug I had in WDW in Oct had one bad night like you described, but then lingering effects.
Roz--I hope your leg feels better! And I know you'll have other halfs!
I think you'll like the King Arthur Flour--I get really consistent results with it. Plus it's unbleached (yes, flour that isn't labeled "unbleached" is whitened with industrial bleach) and they only get their wheat from American farmers, they're employee owned, etc. Great company!
As for our Thanksgiving plans--I'm off to the Delaware seashore after my doctor's appointment. We're cooking the whole meal down there, so I really need to get off the computer and get the turkey, cider, butter, and eggs into the cooler and get the rest of my packed up kitchen into the car. We've got 15 people coming to dinner and I'm cooking--started the job with the cornbread that's in the oven right now (it's going to be stuffing!). Should be fun as long as I don't kill my dad!

Nono - feel better
Beth - enjoy your family time
Knee still hurts, muscles feel very tense -- is this what a taper feels like?
Looked into getting an exercise bike, but have needed roof repairs that take those funds. In fact, that' probably what DW & I will get each other for Christmas.

John - The tense muscles are very much what taper feels like. they are just aching to go, literally. :hug1: We don't have room in our house for work out equipment so I am so glad that we have a community fitness adn aquatic center ta teh HS that is very affordable.
Roz - Thrilled that hte calf is better! Sorry that it's not looking liek teh goal race. You never know what might happen race day. I have had races that I thoguht I was oging easy, but PR'd big time because my body was just happy that day. Good not to get your hopes up, but I'm still hoping for you. Can I come do T-day with you? ;)
MM- I must carry water. Have been in 2 races where they ran out, one of those, they ran out of cups, so at least we could fill our bottles. Plus, I take in fluids very half mile if I go more than 6 or it's hot. Hope your friedn is better soon!
Beth - Good luck with your dad! Hope youa re at least ranking queen of your siblings this weekend, but I am probably dreaming. ;) Cider sounds yummy! Not a family tradition on either side, but I'm thinking it shoudl be.
nono - Oh no!!!! Feel better soon!!!!!
Thanksgiving - Did I mention I returned Sunday from girls' weekend with the ILs? SO looking forward to being back with MIL tomorrow. Oh, and to doing dishes for an hour. WOnder if I'll get any help this year? Friday is a big day, though. At 9 am, I am goign to try to get into BLT for my niece's first trip to WDW! Thn, at 9:15, mom, SIL and I will hit the outlet mall. No tthe opening or wee hours of the morning craziness, just for fun. Rest of teh weekend with my family.

I LOVED your RR, nono! Thank you for always making the effort even when you feel bad!
I think you're gonna look cute no matter what, MM!
Glad you are feeling some better, Rozzie! I sure can't argue that I have been uber healthy either, if only because of a nasty flare  :boohoohoo: Overall, though, I am feeling way better than before! :goodvibes:
I am praying for no stress fractures, Beth and jrbdad!!
Carrie, Rick had to agree with you, lol!
Well, I need to post a HUGE thankyou to Rozzie for talking up the CW-X tights because I got some and they ROCK!!!! :w00t: :yahoo: :cheerleader: I felt so awesome after my run! The soreness was reduced at least by 50%, no joke, during (and most importantly after) my 16 miler on Sunday! I carried my old shoes and some new Nike's  with me and the new Nike's did well except for a Gail-sized blister which is mostly better now. I simply cannot believe the wonder of these tights! They are SO worth the money I paid getting them at Amazon.com. I really want a non-insulated pair to wear for recovery too like Mr. Roz. The only problem would be having to use the restroom, lol! Its like donning a wetsuit, but still, oh so worth it! How's that for a review? :rotfl2:

They are the best thing since wonderbread! One run in them and I was sold and bought another pair. I keep hoping my mediums will last me this winter as I really am hoping to scale back some of my spending. LOL on the wetsuit, I have to lay on a bed to put them on. But yes they are worth the money and effort to me. I know they saved me at NOLA. (a race I should not have been running because of injuries )
Ya'll have my vote of respect for carrying the water. I have gotten to the point where I can't even carry a fuel belt. I have developed quite a adversion to any type of anything on me when I run. I stuff my gels in my bra, and my endurolytes in my shorts.
Tater the greyhound had to have emergency surgery this morning. Absessed tooth that took him out for the count. Poor baby, he's my old one--so I tend to worry even more. Oh and $588 less rich. My Dec TR may be about me eating a can of beans in the villa. :oweye:

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog Roz. I've been wondering about them because I don't recall you mentioning them recently.
Things are busier than usual today at work so I can't think straight to reply to any of the posts.
I actually got up and went running this morning before work. I figured the week before a marathon wasn't the time to chose to run exclusively on the TM. There was something so refreshing and exhilarating to be running in the crisp pre sunrise air--even if it was just for 20 mins. Had a weird moment when I realized the race is just FOUR DAYS AWAY. For some reason four days seems infinitely closer than the five did.

Bday sister, you crack me up! I was just thinking yesterday--I need to get on the thread and find all our resolutions from this year. I couldn't find them either and meant to SMS my personal secretary to see if she could help unearth them. (Mama Gail ;))
Okay, I got a mystery surprise to the first peacock that finds them.

Goals for 2010 for Rozzie:
Run 1800 Miles.
Sub 25:00 5K
Sub 4:18:00 Marathon (guess this means a Fall Marathon :oweye:)
Read 18 Books. (non running goal but very important to me)
I am typing this out after my 4th Bailey's and Coffee. Will reevaluate when sober.

Checking in...went to the sports med dr this morning and I got a very good feeling from her. She's young and a runner and she said (and I quote) "you very clearly love running, so we will do everything to figure out what this is. because you shouldn't have to quit something you love." She thinks a SFX is unlikely after all of the diagnostic twisting, turning and hopping, but she had me go and do x-rays right away just to make sure there isn't something majorly wrong with the joint. She also gave me an RX for PT--to do gait analysis, strengthening, etc. I'm cleared to cross train, and run as long as it's not fast, far, and doesn't hurt more than it has been.
I make it to DE and my dad is pissed that I'm so late--I say to him "um sorry, pelvic xrays weren't really on my agenda" I hope he calms down or this is going to be a loooooong weekend. Especially since my MIL is coming tomorrow. At least my mom's not coming. Currently waiting for the turkey brine to cool enough so the turkey can go in it. Started the dinner rolls, need to start the cheesecake!

TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: 2011 Goals due by Jan 1. Be thinking long and hard about this. I say a rule is you can't put "just finish" unless it's a new distance to you. If it's your first half or full, that is fine. But let's do some measurable goals we can really sink our teeth into. No, it doesn't all have to be race times either. Like I said earlier, one of mine is going to be start running in my Frees and doing more barefoot strides.

Okay, you are cooking everything and he's pissed! Oh my my my. Let him come down to Bama and we will have daughter swap. He will be singing your praises in a hour and begging for the next bus out of my house! I am feeling so happy we chose a extended family free Thanksgiving. Sounds like you found a great Doc! Great she is a runner--and they will understand the insanity of not running. I bet she has you on the road to pain free running in no time at all. I love what my Doc said last night--you have to treat these injuries fresh--sports medicine is more about preventive and well care than sick care. Because when we let things go and try to ignore them...well I know all too well they don't disappear on their own. It takes us being FANATICAL about doing extra things to keep us running. Whatever that might be, XT, yoga, core work, ice, rolling, triggerpoint, massages etc etc etc. Oh one more thing--the whole wheat bread loaf turned out yummy. He sprinkled in some quinoa flakes and then painted the crust with chia seeds like you would poppyseeds. :goodvibes: I wish I could cut you a slice to judge!!
Lisa, I love how Rick is so into this now! :) I am most thankful for a supportive spouse that shares my passion. I know we are so fortunate and will never take it for granted.

I'm going to have to think pretty hard about goals. Right now, I really just do want to finish WDW Half :( I never saw this setback coming, and if I don't start really running again soon I'm not sure how much of it i'll run. And to think, two weeks ago I was targeting 2.10.

Goals for 2010:
Finish Goofy 2010 with a time in the Half and Full that earns me all three medals - YES!:goodvibes:
Release 15 very unnecessary pounds - No, although Rick says I moved Ian out of the house and that was releasing more than 15 pounds! He's very bad!!
Add significant strength workouts to my fitness plan - I will start with 90 minutes per week minimum - Sad to say, another fail!
Run the Princess 2010 with a faster time than the Disney Half 2010 - I will have to go and look but I think this was a faster race
(I would like to do the Mercedes Half again this year but I need to wait till I get home to make that decision since it is in early to mid Feburary) - I did the Mercedes Half and then did a PR for the Talladega Half with Rick! :yahoo:

Well a update on the rest of my goals.....
Run 1800 Miles. Not even close, 1463 to date.
Sub 25:00 5K Yes!
Sub 4:18:00 Marathon Yes!
Read 18 Books. 21 books to date. Have 3 left I want to read this month...

You know, I was having the blues too today about OUC. It was supposed to be my endurance race coming out party. But I had to get that funky funk out of me and realize this is not the only Half Marathon you and I will do. We have tons of races left to run, and we need to commit to keeping ourselves healthy. Not pushing ourselves for one race will enable us to run more in the future. Everyone who runs/races has had to scratch, downgrade goals, or whatever for a race. I didn't see this setback either. Last week I had one of the best tempo training run's in recent memory. Then bam! Hang in there, this time next year you can look back at your old posts and really be encouraged about how far you have come. :hug1:

As far as goals go, I think my goal for this year is to set goals. Last year was a little undefined going into the new year other than the Mardis Gras marathon. My goal was to break 4 hours and it took me two marathons to do it. So this year I want to be specific. Only 4 goal races and some set expectations
5K -Sub 20
10K-39 min(I turn 39 next year)
1/2 1:30:00 (or less)
Drum roll pleas.......3:09:00 Marathon at Philly( Or faster)
Get around best race weight possible 160-165
2340 miles run (or more)
As of today I am 214 miles short of 1800 I have what 35 days? Maybe.
B.H.A.G for sure but for me it's the effort in reaching goals I'm striving for. Be the absolute best you can be. If you going to be a bear, be a Grizzly.
From wikipedia on the American Black Bear:
Black bears are not true hibernators, but they do become significantly less active and go into a dormant state during the winter months. This is sometimes referred to as "seasonal lethargy."
Despite their name, black bears show a great deal of color variation. Individual coat colors can range from blond, cinnamon, or light brown to dark chocolate brown or to jet black, with many intermediate variations existing. Bluish tinged black bears occur <snip> White to cream colored black bears occur <snip>
OK, based on the description, I'm definitely a Black Bear. And the color description (and the chart showing the percentage distribution) is quite remeniscent of my family hair coloring! :rotfl2:
I would say at this point my only goal would be that if we happen to get another 4 blizzards this winter and then another summer without a rainy day, I somehow manage to still practice.
That's my other goal. Simply to practice. Not necessarily to train. Running isn't my first priority. Or even my third. It's just a part of our lives, our lifestyle, therefore a practice. I think I had an internal fight going on this past year with training, when it really isn't my priority. In the end, the truth won out. This isn't the time in my life for me to be the priority by training for anything with a certain goal. I've got to be OK with that, or everything suffers. :goodvibes:
Rozzie

Nono, I think everyone goes through different seasons in life. It's nice that you have figured out what season you are in!
I am going to have some BAHG goals myself for 2011. I am still going to chew on them for a few weeks but so far I know one is to BQ! :) I am enjoying training now, and I know that one day I may not enjoying pushing myself like this. So the season I am in right now and to see what I can be if I give 110%. :thumbsup2:
Nono, I think everyone goes through different seasons in life. It's nice that you have figured out what season you are in!
Yeah, but in all honesty, it's a sucky season too...it's so hard to always be last priority...the good thing is that I'm old enough to know that things never stay static. So, my last place now just seems like forever, but it really won't be.
It's nice that you and Scott are pacing similarly -- makes for a whole lot of fun to watch. :yahoo: BTW, my family is already making "crew" plans for you guys next year in Phila. How's 4 or 5 "stations" sound for your emergency needs that day??

You are so wise Nono. I agree, every season is temporary. That is one of the beauty's of life.
As for Philly, I always wondered how it would feel to be a elite runner. WOW! I don't know what to say except I am the luckiest peacock in the World. :hug1: It will be wonderful to have all of you there and sharing either my victory or my...well...maybe I shouldn't type that out. Another new year resolution, more positive attitude. :)
MM, getting close--I am in the middle of writing you a long PM for last minute advice on a first marathon. Are you not lucky to be the recipient of such fine work? :rotfl2:
Tater is not improving. I know people often ask me "what am I running to" or "what am I running from" when they learn how much I run. Well usually I say I am running to something--but today I was very thankful to have running. I laced up my shoes and for a hour I just ran as far and fast as my calf would take me. Something about being able to leave your worries behind for a hour or so. So no, running is not about races, times, PRs, BQs. It is a part of our life, a defense mechanism sometimes, or a ticket to temporary sanity at other times.
Wishing all my Peaocks a VERY Happy Thanksgiving. I am very thankful for each and every one of you here. I know every single person on this thread has helped me, inspired me, and made me laugh when I was in the middle of a bad day this past year.

Anyway:
Happy Thanksgiving Peacocks!
I'm reasonably certain the Turkey is a distant enough cousin of our that we can eat them without being considered cannibals. ;) :eating:
Felt like crap over the weekend and into Monday; called off from work. Still managed to ellip though and hit the mill Tuesday night; run 7 @ 6 MPH walk 1 @ 4 MPH for 29 min. then 1 min. sprint @ 10 MPH to wrap up the workout. Wednesday I saw my allergy doc and got new bottles for my next round of shots; between that and feeling a little iffy I decided to take another rest day (Sunday was the other but it was planned due to schedule conflicts).
I asked Dr. (new one to me; I think she normally works at a different office in the practice) about possibly going off Advair (my Asthma maintenance med). She looked over my records and commented that I was already on the lowest dose they make, and when I pointed out that I only take it once a day instead of twice she said she wasn't sure if the half life would keep it active much over 12 hours so it may not be all that therapeutic a dose anymore. To be sure she said she would have to look at my spirometry, and looked over my test from that day in a little more detail. (After starting new vials of serum they run a more complete test and check BP & pulse instead of the simple analog peak flow they normally do before & after routine shots) She said with those numbers I probably don't need it. So, I'm going to every other day (I skipped this morning for the first time in ages [at least first intentional skip, once or twice a year I might forget to take meds... :rolleye11:]!)
So, after NOT taking asthma meds I ran the same workout as Tuesday on the mill finishing about 20 or 30 minutes ago with no significant breathing differences. :thumbsup2:
Anyway, I gotta' eat a little brunch, shower, make sweet potato casserole, and head to my parents house to see mom, dad, bro, & sil.
Later gang!

Less than 59 hours and counting. . .
I just had to post--I'm super excited to be trying out a MacBook! I never thought I would get tired of being a PC, but I've gotten fed up with Vista's hassles. My cousin is letting me muck about on hers (can you believe they actually get them in public high school?!) Now I just have to save the money to be able to actually buy one. That is one downside to Apple--there aren't mult manufacturers driving down the price.
I could've done better during Thanksgving dinner, but I've certainly done worse. MOst of all I'm working to stay well hydrated.

Later gang!
That is awesome, DG!
I am so happy to hear such great news!!
Still praying very hard for Tater too!!
Don't buy a house in the school district that's giving out those MacBooks. The school taxes you will be on the hook for will delay you getting your own....
Hope the remaining hours are restful for you....

We turned into a full fledged Apple family in the last four months! First the boys with Mac Book Pros, then we bought the IMac right after Mom and Dad gifted me with the IPad. Rick got the IPod touch free with our IMac purchase and fell in love with it too! We are thrilled our PC days are behind us now... :yahoo::goodvibes:

They do--but have you seen what constitutes as a "discount?" I'm not sure it even covers the cost of tax (at least for TN). But, on the other hand, any discount is more than what Apple usually has.
Just saw that the shuttle launch window is now beyond when I will be in FL--Dec 17 at the earliest. So I won't be able to see a launch (unless it gets pushed back so much that it ends up during Marathon Weekend), but I'm still hoping the shuttle will be on the launch pad for me to at least see.

Back from dinner and catching up now---
*I'm amazed when I talk to runners who never do a darn thing for their feet. Meaning -- no massage, no soak, no cream or oil once in awhile...
Feet need oil? Like massage oil or what? I honestly thought that sort of 'pedicure stuff' (my mental image at the moment) was basically cosmetic, but I THINK you might be serious, and if so, I'm seriously confused... :confused24: Nothing new there though! :silly:
As for the race, awesome you finished despite all the bodily rebellion!!!
On racing with a Garmin...I have used my watch for races only. ... and am not sold on what I prefer. Any thoughts out there?:listen:
Garmin left wrist - track most data on it. Stopwatch (Timex Ironman Wristwatch) right wrist- track mile splits and attempt to watch chip time on it... Works for this Geek!
Beth, I would share "mystery" story now, but I need at least 3 drinks in me to tell it. Oh and all of audience needs at least 4 drinks to hear it LMAO!
Over what period of time for the audience? :confused24: I'm curious about this story, but have never had more than 3 servings of alcohol in a 24 hour period in my life so 4 in a sitting of only a few hours (as I'm guessing you mean) is plum out for me... Wait a sec; could I do like a non-alcoholic sparkling juice or perhaps load up on a ton or SPICY Virgin Mary's? :biggulp:
Roz- Sorry to hear about Tater!!! :(
Gail- Thanks for looking up our goal posts. :thumbsup2: I got the 10k in, doing pretty well all in all on exercise, lowest I got was 214.0 on Aug. 8th, but I'm staying at or under 225 almost all the time so that is pretty acceptable... But that doesn't mean I'm giving up, still have over a month! (I say without weighing myself post Thanksgiving dinner ;))
CN & JRB- Hope you both are on the more minor side of your injury spectrums and continue to recover soon!!!
Good luck to everyone who is having 'relative issues' or who is trying to recuperate from the ones they had.
MM- Sorry to hear about the cramp issues and all the other taper trouble. Have a great race and I hope it isn't too long before you get that Mac you want! :fingerscrossed:
PP & Lisa- Thanks for the good wishes. :goodvibes:
Talking about shoes after dinner; my bro has tried running barefoot occasionally (which my dad hates) and when he was running in college Kev had some 4 oz. Rebocks (IIRC) that were only good for 3 track races. He said they seemed nice, especially since the college paid for them! :rotfl2: OTOH, my dad said he knows you aren't supposed to, but he probably has over 5k miles on his favorite marathon shoes and well over a thousand on two of his other shorter-distance favorites... Did I ever mention that sometimes I think my family is NUTS too, just in different ways than other peoples?
DW & Izzy are sleeping now, Baby is grooming on the printer (I keep a towel on it so she doesn't leave fur inside). Time for bed!

DG, I sure hope you can get off the asthma med for good. :) Holy Moly on your dad's shoe mileage.
MM, I have gotten those cramps before. Maybe once a month I wake up with them. I will eat a baked potato or banana the next day. I don't know if it's K+ related, but it seems to help my mind and I will not have them for a while.
Lisa, I so want to go Apple. I am actually looking for a ereader for Santa to bring me. I would loooove a Ipad but the cost gets me. Our computer is dying and I know it would make most sense financially to get a Mac. Just can't seem to dig up the money with this trip to Italy on the horizon.
I may go with the new Nook Color. I played with it in the store and it seems really cool. Maybe our resident Geek can share his thoughts on it. :listen:
Well off to work I go. Yep on call all weekend. :blech: I did have a great run this morning, pace felt easy and no issues with calf. :fingerscrossed:
Feet need oil? Like massage oil or what? I honestly thought that sort of 'pedicure stuff' (my mental image at the moment) was basically cosmetic, but I THINK you might be serious, and if so, I'm seriously confused...
I say feet need attention. Just like other parts of your body do. Cosmetic? Interesting label. Most good cosmetic treatments at a spa or salon has an element of healthy care that is given as well. Massage, skin care, etc. to support good health. That's the part I mean, not the painting the toenails part! Most things these days that have a totally "pampering" aspect to them have an opposite end of the continuum that is fundamental health care.
The skin is our largest organ. It protects our muscles and ligaments. Oh, and our feet, if I'm remembering correctly, have 25+ bones, and 100+ muscles/ligaments/tendons (I think it's all three that combine to get to 100).
So yeah, I think a couple times a month you should "Sit down and shake hands with your foot." <-- Probably the most relevant thought my Mother said to me. (Not that she doesn't have a lot of good observations, it's just that our interests are different.)
If you have some massage oil, do that once a month or so while giving your feet a little massage. Or if you are tired, just put some oil on and put some socks on and go to bed. Or cream. Whatever's around, or whatever Santa might put in your stocking! ;) Being a guy, you probably don't get these little "spa" gifts from people in your life, but I do. A little foot treatment now and then is a great way to use up the gifts! :)
I had a whopper of a blister at the same time as my shell puncture wound. That was the beginning of September. I got to show them off at Twin Cities as they were still healing. Next week, I can show the current state at OUC. There's no callouses. Completely healed and have done a couple marathons since. So the skin's had a workout!
My footcare habit started long before running though. Street shoes are positively evil! What professionals are allowed to sell to the general public is crazy. When I moved to NYC, I had to throw out 3/4 of my shoes. And wow, in NYC, I found out I can buy shoes that don't beat the crap out of my feet, including heels. It was a real eye opener. Dr. Scholl wouldn't have half the business it has if shoe manufacturers made shoes well-fitting.
:rotfl2: OTOH, my dad said he knows you aren't supposed to, but he probably has over 5k miles on his favorite marathon shoes and well over a thousand on two of his other shorter-distance favorites...
Your father is in denial. He is essentially barefoot running. ;) :goodvibes:

Have a great safe trip down MM. Remember to keep me posted, K? I will be on pins and needles. Feel free to text me if you feel like "chattin". :goodvibes:
Okay Northern friends, how in the heck do you keep hands warm? I had another one of my famous "episodes" with my hands this morning. Yeah it was 32 degrees, had on gloves, but got the needle/knives feeling, then the throbbing. Had this happen a few time last winter. Tomorrow I think I will do 2 pair and a pair of socks, but goodness--I was in so much pain I was doubled over crying. Yeah crying. Also lost the ability to move my digits for several mintues after I returned home. Give me your best tips on how to keep this from happening again. I think some of my problem is that I naturally have cold hands, even on the hottest day people/patients will comment how my hands feel like ice cubes. I guess I don't have good circulation in my hands, and it makes it double sensitive to cold? I don't know! :scratchchin:

Roz, do you have Reynaud's??
If you aren't seeing symptoms of that, then perhaps you need the exercise we used to use in ski practice...I'll try to 'splain.
So, you basically keep your elbow straight and windmill your arm around at a very high velocity. It forces blood towards your extremities. I thought my ski coach was nuts when she first taught us it, but I still use it today. She was French Canadian...she knew cold! ;)
Have fun MM. See you on the other side!!

Haven't heard of that one for quite a while. My ex has it; she actually has a handicapped tag for her car and needs her remote starter (to preheat the car) + gloves fall to mid spring as it has gotten worse over the years... It is kinda' funny how I used to be half-naked on long car trip[s trying to keep her warm and now I'm the one in a heavy coat with E in just a T-shirt on the road sometimes since I'm starting to melt her! :rotfl2:

Thanks Jen and nono. And nono I hope a you are prepared to help me polish off the bottle of Jack Daniels I'm planning on bringing Saturday. I hope you're not already abstaining for Boston.
Well I'm sitting at the gate an hour before scheduled take off. This is usually just about the time I would normally be running from my car to the economy lot shuttle but with all the talk about the new scanners I didn't want to take any chances at missing my flight. Nashville has the millimeter wave scanners. The only real issue is that travelers didn't know what they were doing and weren't listening to instructions to know. When the TSA workers say take everything out of your pockets including paper because the machine will pick it up they mean it. So there was a little bit of back up as the people in front of me had to get patted down anyway for that reason. The worker had me worried that my KT tape might cause a problem but I got through fine.

We did our Huff Puff and Race for Pumpkin Pie this morning in Rehoboth. No pain when I woke up so I decided to do it but take it easy. It was hard to hold back, but I didn't have any pain, just some stiffness. Finished right at 30 minutes. DH finished right around 37--shaving 6 minutes off his last 5k time. I was so proud of him! This was a major confidence booster for me...I can still run!

Hey, wear whatever you need to keep warm. I do wear ski gear in the winter. When the wind chill is around 0F. OK, Raynaud's (we're both spelling it wrong!!!) doesn't always have blanching apparently. Red or blue is also associated with the fingertips too. I had a friend who had it and still managed to ski, so it isn't a dealbreaker. Just a ball-buster with the pain!

CN- Congrats on the finish & WTG to your DH!!!
Roz- Have fun with you new running fashion trendsetting!
Today was a no o-Adair day & plan was 63 minutes on the mill. Got up, light breakfast, and got started. Was doing 6 min. @ 10 MPH, 1 min. @ 4 then around 25ish minutes in my shins started yelling at me... :confused24: I dropped to a walk for a couple minutes then actually stopped things and rubbed each shin for several seconds. Back on the clock and began with a slow walk, felt fine after ~2 minutes, so I went back into 3 or 4 min. runs to 1 min. walks. Finished by doing 30 seconds (instead of 1 min.) @ 10 MPH. Grand total with WU & CD was a little over 6 miles, but I got my time in. Breathing was slightly labored at some points, but definitely nothing I'd consider as asthma attack. So all in all pretty good. After I finished I massaged my shins and the bottoms of feet (ala nono!) in between ITB stretches. Besides, I watched almost 2 episodes of TNG, so how could that be bad? ;) It is interesting, I put a thermometer / hydrometer in the room and from the time I started until I finished I think the temp went up 3 degrees and humidity nearly 20%! Good things I ran a small fan pointing at the mill as well as the ceiling fan or it could have been a fire hazard... :rotfl2:
Ate some more, showered, and went and dropped a unit of blood for the Red Cross. Got a T-shirt! :thumbsup2: Actually, they gave DW & I each one (she also donated) but they only had XLs so that means I got two shirts. :D That was my 3rd time, so I suppose it may be the charm. Came home and ate lunch then took a nap watching Disney Channel while DW & Izzy went out for a doggy play date. I expect them home soon. I think I might donate blood again as close to the 8 week mark I can since that will be about 3 months before my 10 miler; I think that ought to be enough recovery time... :scratchchin: Then I don't think I'll donate again for about a year- wait until just after the 2012 WDW Full. :silly:

I'm at the hotel for the evening. I have set 3 alarm clocks and requested a wake up call. I'm planning on being on the first shuttle at 4:30 (there are only 2 scheduled)--I have come this far; there is no way I'm going to miss it now.
The race expo was really small, but nice. Since I figured I will never have another first marathon, I splurged on a brooks logo running shirt (we got a long sleeved brooks tee as part of the registration, but there is a huge difference in quality) and a generic 26.2 ornament with a pink flamingo on it. (I'm going to ask my sister to paint the race name and date on the other side). I was sad that the shuttle wasn't on the launch pad, but since the launch date has been pushed back so much, no telling where it is.
Oh, the medal is awesome. It's a great size, nice and heavy, and has is on a beautiful ribbon with astronauts on it.
I spoke with Scott on the phone, but I think we just missed each other at the expo. They were doing the tour of Kennedy Space Center (I didn't feel like paying $36 for something I couldn't focus very well on) and then the pasta dinner, so we're hoping to connect tomorrow.
Did an easy 20 min jog about half an hour ago. My body feels pretty good. I have a horrible headache--I think from the flight and the anxiety (all though right now my anxiety is pretty low) and the poor sleep last night.
I soooooo appreciate everybody's support. I can't wait to see the Peacocks that will be at WDW next weekend (and then maybe see a few more in January). You guys are awesome. :hug1:

MM, sounds like the great reviews that I have read for this race are living up to it. I have also read it has GREAT on course support and gorgeous surroundings. This time tomorrow night you will be a MARATHONER! :yahoo:
Don't feel bad about the expo purchases. Mr Roz and I always buy a special race shirt/jacket/whatever in addition to race tees. I like to think of it as a memory I can always have in front of me. Also it's nice to wear them to other races and see how many people come up and and talk about the race you are wearing. I had several people in Ohio come up to me and comment on my Nola sweater I was wearing. :)

THe one thing I've read about the race that is worrisome is that the road is really cambered--my ITB is aching just thinking about it. The weather today would've been perfect for the race--completely overcast, breezy, temps in the mid to upper 60s for highs (which caused many people to complain "It's cold." Makes me wonder if they've been training in central America). Of course for tomorrow it is supposed to be sunny; race start temps in the mid to upper 50s, with midday temps in the mid to upper 70s. Oh well. I've trained in that sort of weather, so I know I can make it.
I've got my gear laid out for tomorrow, but I am afraid I'm missing something. It's probably just nerves.

Heard from MM this morning, she seemed in good spirits! I hate this race has no tracking. How in the heck are we supposed to keep up with our peeps? :oweye:
My 14 miler this morning last about 12 minutes. Mr Roz's ankle had weird pains and we turned around and walked home. It was dark and cold so I cuddled up to blanket while supervising his therapy on his ankle. So my options are:
Try later on today, for 14.
Do it tomorrow after work.
I would just shoot for this afternoon but on call. I might text the Doc I am working with before I head out and see if he has anything on the books. I just hate going out not knowing if I will be beeped. Coupled with the fact I have only 30 min to get to hospital and I am 29 minutes from door to door.

Can you run a route to the hospital and lap it until you are done and have Mr. Roz pick you up if you don't get beeped? Or do you have to show up showered? :(

Oh, I wish I had made it on last night to give you one more best wish, MM! I am sure you won't need it though :goodvibes: I can't wait to hear about your first marathon! I love that new name, Marathon Miss!
Rick has come down with a cold and when he gets sick, he goes to bed immediately! :p I am definitely on my own this afternoon for my 8 mile run. Can't wait to put those tights on again though - maybe I will try the bed, Rozzie, for the donning of them, LOL!

I WISH! The hospital is 16 miles away. I would have to run on the the Bayway, which is highly illegal. If I wasn't arrested/killed on there, I would be flattened in the tunnel that is about 20 feet wide. No showering is not required, but I have gotten a great number of comments when I show up in running shorts. Especially when I bend oveer to hook up equipment, so I keep extra scrubs in car. I could run around hospital, but the sidewalks are F'ed up so bad with all the oaks cracking them up. Bad for my hip too, and oh yeah, it's in not the nicest area in town KWIM.
Lisa, I have my tights on now, all ready to go! Want to drive down to the Coast and we knock this out together? :D

I'm sitting in an ice bath right now but it's not very cold. I still think it is probably better than nothing. I'll take another at WDW.

I can't speak for everyone who has completed a marathon, but after my first one I wanted to puke for a few hours afterwards. I think these are all very normal reactions to such a event. I think it's one of those things until you do it, you really don't understand the flood of emotions.
Have fun at WDW. Can't wait to celebrate with you in person. :biggulp:

Okay, now that my pride has been left back in the ice water going down the drain, I can look with less clouded vision on my accomplishment. I can now admit to myself that despite having to walk half my 20 miler and the last 3rd of my subsequent 11 miler, for some reason I thought my ITB would magically behave better on the course. I also think that even though I never acknowledged it, I had some delusion that I would come in faster than the time I put on my registration form.
Well, obviously none of that happened. My ITB started complaining loudly around mile 9 or 10. But I couldn't really do walk/run intervals, as it wouldn't want to get started again if I decided to walk. So I made the decision I would run as long as I could, because I knew when I had to stop I wouldn't be able to go again. I made it past mile 17 when I felt the entire outside of my right leg tighten up. I decided I should stop and stretch. Well, then I couldn't go again. Having stopped for a couple of minutes, my ITB wouldn't support me anymore. So I was forced to walk. I tried running a few times, but couldn't make it any longer than 4 minutes or so. Mentally I felt really good, and felt I should push myself more--but I just couldn't get the ITB to move. It was frozen-like. But after allowing it to recover several minutes from my running attempts, I could power walk pretty good. I decided that whatever I could do, I should do it to the best of my ability. I was walking faster than my last few miles of running, so that was good.
My official time was 6:05:28. I was 755 out of 803 finishers. At first I was bummed about that time, but it equals about a 13:56 or 13:57 average pace, so I was excited to know I had kept under a 14 min average mile even walking a little more than a 1/3 of the course.
And, I ran more than I did on my 20 miler and didn't have to walk any longer than I did then. So I don't know why I'm beating myself up so much. I finished. I was hard. I don't know why I expected it to be easy. If it were easy, more than 1% of the population would do one.
I'll comment on the actual course and post pictures later. It may not be until Wednesday because we are staying on the BWI side first before moving to BWV and I don't want to pay for internet.
I really appreciate everyone's encouragement. You guys are so special to me. I'm glad I get to see several of you this coming weekend.

Oh--and despite my initial reaction to my time and my pain, at no time did I ever think I wouldn't do another marathon. I did think that I should've given myself more time to prepare, but if I had waited until I could do an entire training program without pain I would've probably never ran one. If anything, my initial disappointment helped spur me on to do another one--to kick the distance even harder in the ass. You're right, nono. I didn't let the course conquer me. And I'm still alive. I guess the first guy to run the distance can't even say that ;)
DG, I'll let you know when I sign up for Akron. I think that will be my one marathon next year. I'll do some halfs, but I really want to try and take it slower and let my body recover. Plus, Akron has some HILLS.
And I'll look at my goals for this year and come up with some for 2011.

Ain't that the truth sister! I love the quote "Think life is hard? Do a Marathon." But you are now in the club. The feeling of family out there on the course; knowing everybody around you trained for this day for a very long time--I love that. You look right, look left, and know that everyone is having some type of issue they are dealing with. Mentally or Physically.
Just start daydreamin' now about how much fun it is to bust that new PR out of the park!! :thumbsup2:

Got in an uneventful swim today (1800 yards of laps then 5 min. whirlpool, 10 steam room, and 5 sauna :)) - but that's a good thing! My main 1750 took 30:47.97 so no notable impact from blood donation yesterday. :D Felt good the whole time to boot! :w00t: Only odd thing was while doing an ITB stretch in the steam room :silly: I must have moved my right wrist funky and pinched something; part of my palm and lower thumb got intermittently numb and tingly for a few hours... Any thoughts on something I should take for immune boosting? I'm worried about getting sick after the race.
Also I feel really cold. Is that just because I was in the sun or can the distance do that?

MM-Echinacea does wonders for me. Especially in the tea form, take it about 5x a day. I usally take it week prior, and week after. If no tea, take the capsule form. Also I up my Vit C before and after a Marathon to help my immune system stay strong. Throw in some sunshine (vit D) and I bet you will be just fine!
Beth, glad to hear the hips are behaving!
John, when do you hear about your ITB/fx?
Thanks everybody!

I get very cold after some races...don't worry about getting sick. As Rozzie said, get out and soak up some Vitamin D today! Don't put on sunscreen for about 20 min. if you're into sunscreen. Just take it gently today, but do walk and swim. A bit of movement is a huge help for the lymphatic system! Also, if you want to grab something else while picking up the tea, get some fish/crill or other oil to bring the inflammation down. That should help make you more comfortable.
Hang in there. I had a rough recovery this past week after Philly. But after 4 days, I honestly forgot I had just run a marathon (that may have been the Thanksgiving wine helping. )

Congratulations, Marathon Miss!!!!!!!!
You did awesome on your first marathon! Think what you can do without your ITB trying to spoil the fun!
Lisa, the klutzy girl appeared again yesterday. I was meeting Ian at Cracker Barrel before church yesterday. Instead of watching where I was going I was trying to see if he had already exited his car and I walked right into one of those big rocking chairs and cut the top of my foot pretty badly. I was wearing a Mary Jane type shoe, hence the bare top. :boohoohoo: Cracker Barrel only has bandaids in case you have ever wondered. Anyway, I went home after breakfast, cleaned it up better, bandaged myself and went to church. After church, I had an errand and then brought some food home to the sick boy (Rick). I could tell Rick wasn't keen on my trying to run anyway; I had to promise I would stop if I had any pain. Everything was fine though but since it was so late, I only knocked out five miles instead!

Got moving quickly and no snooze bar this morning so I banged out 42 minutes on the ellip instead of my base of 30. :D This time I guess I'm having a nono style 'invigorated' reaction to having a blood change... ;) Also did my planned crunches / squats / ITB stretching. Nothing is up for 2012 yet; dates are available for 2011 so you could make a guess based on 2010 and 2011 dates. I think you are talking about "Mickey's Halloween 5K (http://adisneyworldsports.disney.go.com/media/ewwos/pdf/sports/rundisney/Mickey%27sHalloween5KFRI1.pdf)" which is included here:
http://espnwwos.disney.go.com/events/rundisney/wine-and-dine-half-marathon/
My GUESS is that it will be Saturday Sept. 29th in 2012, but maybe Oct. 6th instead, IF they have one in the fall. With only two years to look at it is a bit of a shot in the dark...

Some thoughts on the Space Coast: First of all the two biggest beefs I had. 1. The course was run through residential neighborhoods and open to local traffic. Because the course was essentially a north out and back followed by the south out and back of the half this meant there were runners on both sides of the road with big vehicles trying to weave around them. Some drivers wouldn't pass even when there was an opportunity and would just annoyingly and unsafely follow closely behind runners while other times cars would be driving too fast. It was not good. 2. Even though the course was open for 7 hours and I finished with over an hour still left many of the water stop volunteers started wandering away from the tables after the middle of the pack passed by. This meant for most of the water stops the last 7 miles (and they did have them almost every mile or miles and a half) we would have to run over to the table to get water. And most of the photogs also left the course. Upsetting when I wanted lots of documentation of my first marathon.

Good points: The course was along a river where an occasional dolphin frolicked in the waves. There was a nice pancake breakfast at the end. They called your name and your clock time as you approached the finish. The medals are so nice. The race was really small (probably less than 3000 for both the full and the half) so the course was not crowded. There was a big screen with a space shuttle lift off for countdown (which I couldn't really see back in the back). There were plenty of water stations and many of them had gu (though I was so hot and a bit nauseated that the second half I just used gatorade for electrolyte replacement). It was really nice coming into the park at the end to hear everyone cheering for me. At one point someone yelled something about joining the 26.2 club and I lost it at that point. After 26 miles though it is very hard to cry and be able to breathe effectively. There were plenty of port o pots.

Roz - I really like Mazilla and Saucaony "convertaibles". They are gloves on teh inside adn have a mitten wind breaking shell on the outsidfe. Once your hands warm up, you Peel teh mitten back and tuck it in a little pocket on the glove itself and you have glocves. I find teh wind break layer makes the most difference int eh cold. If it's really, really cold, I'll add a very thin liner. HTH! OCngrats on teh Kindle BTW!

Running out of time for this trip:( JetBlue will charge us $100pp to cancel, which I knew. If I can delay the trip, they also charge the difference in price if the new one is more.
I called DVC, they said even though they are closed for upgrade tomorrow, they will still be there and they can still help me if I need to cancel the whole trip or part of it.

Ugh; started a post and mis-clicked, losing it...
A- Especially if your dad wants you to go, is there anything you can do to help him by staying? :confused24: I think attitude play s big role in recovery, and he feels guilty about making you postpone your trip and possibly incur heavy fees in doing so that could make him worse. I'm just trying to toss out that there that from my perspective it might not be selfish at all to go, but I don't have a clear picture of your family dynamic to know if that is truly an option for you or not. In any case, Happy Birthday; please try and have some fun! :cheerleader:

PP- Thanks! Tomorrow will be interesting; no inhailer scheduled but I am getting allergy shots plus the high is predicted at 32 degrees. I'm very curious what my peak flow #s will look like with that combo; but hoping for something good and at least above "normal" (640ish from some charts I've seen) if not closer to my previous standard of 700 - 750 depending on the day and temp. :silly:
Really tired after work and took a short nap on the couch. Oh--and despite my initial reaction to my time and my pain, at no time did I ever think I wouldn't do another marathon. You rock!!!! I cannot say that. Spent at least 3 days saying never again. I am thrilled fro you!!!!!!! I know how you trianed with a lot of walking, but it's so devatstating to hit a point int eh race where you know you are done running. You think about how it will take forever to finish. You still had a great pace, though. Way to go! Plus, this shoudl make it a little easier to set a new PR. ;) I have yet to get as good a time as the first time. Congratulations!!!!!!!!! :cheerleader::cheerleader::cheerleader:

Glad that MS will at least be available for you tomorrow, so you fdon't have to decide today. Praying taht they will find out what's wrong soon, there will be a relatively wasy fix adn you will be enroute to WDW as scheduled!!!!! Please do somethign for yourself today, it is your birthday. Even if it's a little thing. :hug1:
John - :hug1:Hang in there! SO hard to be here when you can be out & about liek the rest of us.
Beth - So glad things are feeeling better!!!!!
Roz - Hope teh foot's ok now. Ouch!!! There's one vote agains bareofot running. ;) (not that that's how you did it)
nono - Hope you're feeling better this week!
LIsa - Hope Rick is ok adn your foot heals quickly! Wish I could think of an easy way to let it heal or anything to help. :hug1:
Did an 8-miler this weekend. Coldest run of the year. Boy did it take a while for those lungs to warm up. Plus, I was at my parents and it was the hilly course. First 3 minutes I wanted to turn back, next think I knew, there were 2.5 miles to go. Legs felt pretty good and was happy with my pace for teh conditions! Yay!!! Now....for this weekend's 18-miler.... :scared07: SHoudl be able to do it Saturday mornign when fresh. hope that helps.

Well, if he is ill and can't take care of himself, I have to stay. He has a great attitude and is telling me to go, thats not the problem.

Ok, here's the latest, FINALLY a Dr came to see him...She said she doesn't think it's pnuemonia at all now:confused24: She thinks he has some kind of gastro virus thing..He was able to eat breakfast and lunch..He is saying his stomach still hurts but not as bad. She said she's 90% sure we can still go to WDW:cheerleader:But she's keeping him overnight tonight (we figured as much) keeping him on antibiotics tonight and ordering some other kind of test to look at his stomach again just to be sure. She think's he'll be ok to come home tomorrow night...As long as he can be on his own, she thinks we can go:fingerscrossed:

Thanks, all....I'm still not as optimistic as the Dr is...I just don't know that it's enough time...If he comes home tomorrow night, how do I REALLY know he'll be ok for me to be gone as of 4am Thurs morn? I sound like a paranoid freak:grin: but I know how my father is, and I know how slow everything works @ hospitals.
I did call JetBlue for the heck of it....To change from Thurs to Fri is $184 extra pp, $50 pp change fee and the rest is the difference in price, but it's the cheapest flight Fri...Sigh.

A- I'm still confused & probably missed something- Feel free not to answer & I hope I don't sound like I'm prying into personal stuff, but are you usually a primary caregiver for your dad? :confused24: Or perhaps this is just a special occurrence because he is sick and no one else happens to be available in case of emergency? I'm just not following why you need to be in town because he is sick...
DG, there comes a point where our parents are too old to navigate the world by themselves. Mine could sort of do it together, but then my Dad died. No way my Mom could do it on her own. She chose to stay at the nursing home she entered with my Dad in hospice. My sister and I were both willing to take her in, but she chose to have others take care of her (plus it's a really nice nursing home -- not fancy, simply good people).
Jen, hang in there. :hug1:
OK, I packed 3 people in under 1 hour last night. When we come to the BBQ looking like we shopped at a yard sale, you'll understand why.

I am the primary caregiver. He can normally take care of himself while we're at WDW, my he does have some mental capabilities that are lacking..Like common sense sometimes eludes him, I'm not being cruel, it's just a fact...Like calling and waking me up @ 6:30am to tell me something, knowing I haven't been sleeping well in weeks..Stuff like that..He's forgetful, but thats due to some treatments he's had to take, I am NOT getting into that here.

My father says he feels fine, there is just 1 issue they need to take care of, and me being there isn't going to make it any better or worse. So I'm sending my friend Shirley that lives around the corner, to come pick up my father from the hospital..He thinks they're keeping him until Fri now, when orig he was getting out tonight. Sigh. But as everyone keeps telling me, try to get rid of the guilt and just go...He doent feel sick, and he's telling me to go.
Boarding passes all printed, bags all packed...Just need to food shop for him and I'm done.
Gotta remind Scott to wake me up and get me off the plane:rotfl2:

Okay, gotta' head to work... BTW CN- it snowed here overnight. No accumulation on pavement, but have some on grass, roofs, cars, etc. I was surprised to hear yesterday that our previous snows yielded no official Cleveland accumulation and that having none since March 25th was the 2nd longest stretch we've had. I'm so glad you're coming Jen!
Postmarathon blues are in full force today. My massage from Shannon helped a bit. I just want to cry. Seeing runners on the boardwalk and around the resorts doesn't help.
And while yesterday I felt I could walk 13.1 miles on Saturday this morning I woke up knowing wisdom tells me I don't need to put that kind of stress on my body right now. My ego is fighting but I want to listen to common sense this time. I may do the 5K and cheer everyone on. Sorry Gail I would love to walk with you but maintaining a 15 min pace for 13 miles is too much to ask my body to do and still be on speaking terms.

Geek, put this in your equation. ;) These are aging MEN. Men who've spent their entire lives telling others (esp. their little girls) what to do. The role reversal is extremely uncomfortable for them. And challenging for the adult daughters. (Not that I know anything about this, but 2 years after my Dad's been dead, I'm ready to :biggulp: just remembering those days...)

Since normal for my height & age is around 640, I think I'm progressing just fine with going off the steroid / long acting bronchodilator asthma combo more quickly referred to as Advair! :yahoo:

My DW has a thing for dishes - we have two different sets of Disney Christmas dishes and a set of "everyday" Disney dishes that we use, well - everyday :).
We've not been to a MVMCP either - but got to experience most of it while there for Christmas last year. Love the time of year - don't care for the crowds. Gotta take the good with the bad. Thinking maybe a trip between Christmas and New Years next year after our pouts reload.

I ran all 4 miles outside! I do think I might need long tights though...I was pretty numb when I got back! My hip seems to bother me a lot less when I run outside--I think it's because I regulate my own speed. I almost wiped out once on the uneven sidewalks, but overall it was okay, and I thought my pacing was good considering the hills. I also talked to my doctor today, and she told me I can keep running as long as the pain doesn't get worse.

Well MM, I have to be selfish. You should come do the OUC with all of us! ;) Seriously I think it's going to be a great race. I have also heard some super good things about Space Coast. (incredible course, unique medal, friendly organized staff) That's on our list too. I think you should be able to trot the OUC a week after.
And because of the banter back and forth, I wanted to go back and make sure I remembered this correctly. I did swear that someone (not to mention any names, but you can read it in the quote ;) ) initially thought doing a half 6 days after one's first full would be doable, and I have found the proof!
DG, as to the pain of the full, mine was really nothing that I hadn't been experiencing in training. I never had the moment I had read/heard about about feeling like I couldn't go on or feeling like I was having to carry a refrigerator around. No--my ITB forced me to walk before I could get to the point. So I'm frustrated and confused about my time and performance. I feel if I had really given it all I could, I wouldn't be able to walk, and I would've felt that "wall" trying to hit me (since it's a mental thing). I feel like I gave up (or gave in), because of the way I feel and because of the fact I can walk around Disney with just a minimal amt of discomfort and run 20 and 30 mins a few days after.
So here's what I have come up with. I realized when I got here to WDW, that it was just over 13 months ago that I ran my first major race ever--the RFTT 10K. In that time, I have done 3 halfs and now my first full. In fact, I just did my first half just under 9 months ago (and that was while I was only half recovered from an injury from 4 months prior). For someone who was never active AT ALL until the end of March 2009, that is a lot of demand on the body. (Maybe it would be no problem for someone used to moving and being fit, but that wasn't me.) I believe that under all that stress, my body did the best it could that day. Maybe mentally I could've done more. But physically I wasn't able to. A big part of me wishes I would've been more sensible and patient and taken maybe at least 8 or 9 months (instead of 5) to train for the full. I don't like feeling I did a half-assed job just to get it done with by the end of this year (since I set that goal the end of last year). Plus, I don't like doubting my performance. If I had been better trained, would the outcome have been different? I don't know. Maybe, maybe not.
I'm struggling with that impatience to prove I can do it vs the common sense that I need to take it slow right now. Most of the day I feel I could eek out a half marathon on Saturday. It wouldn't be pretty, and I probably wouldn't like how I feel during and after--but it would get done. But I know that if I really want to be able to run injury-free, I can't keep doing stupid stuff like that. This running thing is definitely a learning process, and I'm the type of person who apparently likes to learn by making mistakes of her own than listening to others when they tell me.
Shutterfly is having some issues. I'm working on it

What was the date of that post MM? Ha! :D I still stand by my ulitmate advice is to listen to your body. When I say "Trot" I mean a slow shuffle, mixed with walking. BUT after the ITB issues you have experienced leading up to this race, I am officially backing off the "able to trot" advice and going with doing whatever is best for your body. I am allowed to change my mind! ;)
Beth, I got Stablyx 3/4 and Peform Pro full tights.

Love the pictures -- thanks for posting.
What a great smile :)
I know you must be proud of the medal -- quite an accomplishment.
Again, way to go -- I'll just sit here and :cheerleader: as I wait for my knee to heal (hopefully).

Thanks about the pictures.
And go back and read what I was posting 10 or 11 months ago--not much different from yours. I was sidelined with ITBS (but on the left side--currently I am having right ITBS) and unsure if I would make it back. (Though, after my above post, I'm probably not the best role model of what to do.)

Does sound very similar -- I've learned so much during this down time.
Hopefully, I can learn from my mistakes earlier rather than later.
Say what you want to about yourself -- you finished.
Did you read the back of your shirt? :p:thumbsup2:

Carrie-
My DW has a thing for dishes - we have two different sets of Disney Christmas dishes and a set of "everyday" Disney dishes that we use, well - everyday :).

I bought everyday Mickey dishes from disneyshopping.com! they always have disney dishes and I also have a thing for dishes! =)
Didn't exercise yesterday; had to stay late at work and had my HAM net so it would have been ~9 PM before I could start and doing so that late tends to throw me off even more than I usually am! ;) Hopefully tonight after work I'll get in 30 min. of mill torture and I might even go for my afternoon semi-weekly walk... :silly: At the moment it is 25 degrees here, so if my friend decides to cancel it I won't fight him though... :tomato:
If I haven't told you, DG, Rick is a HAM too! He's got the highest/hardest license (Extra?) and his call sign is WW4FLY. He wanted one that had something to do with flying since he is a pilot by trade
Just saw Jen at Off Kilter! She made it. She was the first Peacock to see my beautiful medal. Ran for 30 mins this am.

Yay!!!!!!! LOVE the pictures of the medal and your shirt, MM :yahoo:
CWX tights!! Get a RW gift card for 20% off, then use ROTED code for additional 15% off. Waaallaaa! They are great for the hips.
I can't run on a TM, it KILLS me hips. I can't find a natural stride to save my life. I can do maybe one run or two every few months if I am desperate, but I try to avoid TM at all cost. Just me and my wacky jacky hips. :silly:
I like that discount - I'll have to see the cost with the gift card plus ROTED compared to Amazon! I have to agree, Rozzie, that over time I realizethat my body doesn't like the TM and how it dictates everything instead of my own body deciding and that ends up making me feel bad!

Lisa, how is your foot? Nice cold weather patten now should work nicely for our tights. ;)
The foot is slow healing but it is doing better! It has to be better for my 18 miler this weekend! :fingerscrossed: I am so happy about those tights; I want another pair and I'm gonna get Rick some! I should have done it already :oweye:
I went to the dermatologist for a full body skin scan and she decided to take a small mole off the back of my upper thigh. I really didn't expect it but my 52 year old sis had melanoma on her arm and my dad has had innumerable squamous and basal cancers treated through the years. I have been very careful about sun and I know that it is really impossible to be 100% safe! I had a couple of really bad burns in childhood too...:( Hopefully, its nothing but I am choosing not to tell close family and worry them at this point so y'all are my family for the next few days :goodvibes:

Lisa, I had a mole removed a few months ago on my stomach. It looked concerning, and I took a poll @ work with the docs and they all agreed it was nothing. One even made fun of me and said it was a freckle. Yeah, you know where this is going. Came back pre-melanoma. I freaked out at first until my derm told me the people who are vigilant about skin safety and go and get regular checkups very rarely get something advanced. Its the people who put their head in sand and ignore things for years that get into serious trouble. But I understand the anxiety you are dealing with. We are here for you every step of the way. (Hug)
This reminds me, I think I forgot my non-carcogenic hippie expensive sunscreen. Drats...
