Now I feel guilty about the beautiful WDW weather. :(

DON'T! Enjoy our shared happy place and (expect for talking to us! ;)) forget the 'real world' exists while your are at The World! :thumbsup2:

PS- congrats on making the 8000th post to the Running thread! Please see one of the lead Peacocks for your prize. <jk>

5.6 miles this morning--two loops around the CR and to the end of the MK trail and back. Felt great. Saw more joggers than at an other run--must be all of those folks for food and wine.

Great week of running for me. This week we are just letting our body figure out what pace it wants to run. Well, add that to a week off practically after race, and a cool snap (60s) we are having a blast. This morning turned into a progression run with finishing up at 10K pace. Body feels better than it has ever felt running. Mmmmn. Low miles and lots of rest. :scratchchin:

I am having some serious Disney Envy tonight. :boohoohoo:

It looks like I made the right choice to do the LR yesterday. Everything around the CR was shut down this morning for the Halloween 5k AND i'm dragging from the French Regional Lunch + tequila tasting. If anyone ever has a chance to do the French Regional Lunch I highly recommend it!:D

I'm so happy for you Roz -- feeling so good.

I just had a really good 10.5 mile run. DG I totally recommend the towpath. I started at Peninsula (which had a lot of fall type activities going on -- very quaint) and ran just past Ira Rd. It was full of bikers and runners.

First time I've run in the low 50s since March. I felt over dressed in tights a running jacket gloves and earwarmers as there were several people running in shorts. As my last run on Wed was in the mid 70s I feel I was dressed appropriately especially since my breath was very visible. At the end of my run I had steam coming off my legs. Crazy! I've never seen that before.

A- Way to keep the plan up!

MM- Awesome on the Towpath; my race next week is actually on a different section of it... :silly:

Just got in from my last long-ish run before above 10k. Plan was 4.5 miles, did 4.61 in 45:02.59 (9:46 pace). It was 51 degrees w/ 88% humidity, 56 / 68 at the end. Nothing amazing, but I'm still pretty happy with that; a LOT better than my last few training runs...

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

MM, so happy the hip is better!!

My Achilles/peroneus and ITB ran the run pretty well. I went back to wearing my knee braces and it was pretty flat so that helped. I think the knee braces prevent my lower leg from doing the work of my hip flexors which is what the ART guy said was happening (makes sense). I do feel that muscle
group -- particularly my iliopsoas -- was kinda achy at the end (it's not used to doing work). What's really helping right now--open bar at this wedding reception. :p Coming from the Bible belt I am totally not used to this kind of reception.

A- That's not good; hope the ice helps! :fingerscrossed:

Forgot to mention, last night I picked up two new pairs of New Balance "running" shoes (473 in black and 520 in white/silver) from Kohl's; they were on sale and I haven't seen anything online that screamed out to me. I'm thinking the 473s for casual walking around and the 520s for short 'mill runs- need to see how they feel once I give them a spin... I tried on at least four other pairs of shoes but none of them were winners. I found the Rebok "walking" shoes I tried interesting; if I was just in them they were very comfy and oddly "cushy" in the forefoot, but unless I was really careful when I started walking I began overpronating noticeably watching myself in the store mirror!

LOL on the bible belt. Coming from the heart of the bible belt, I know exactly what you mean. I find that weddings down here are either punch and cake or open bar. Like no in between whatsoever. Makes perfect sense about what you were describing in the leg. I need though to dust off my anatomy book. :p Have fun at the reception!

DG, good luck with the shoes. Have you ever tried Nike Frees? I love them to walk around and do errands in.

Haven't tried the Frees. The arches in most Nike's (including a pair last night) generally feel funny to me; a little too high/sharp I think. They also seem to be pretty limited on what comes in Wide widths (I generally wear a men's ~11.5 size 2E or 4E width); I checked a few websites and it doesn't look like they make any wide Frees... ADIDAS were even worse; I got a pair of trail shoes online (didn't realize that was what they were) and they KILLED my feat; couldn't even use them on the ellip, much less walking or running!

Both pairs of these NBs felt pretty light; I'm looking to try something that seems to have less "support" than the running shoes I've been using so far and see how my bio-mechanics respond. FYI, the running store I went to when I started thought I was only overpronating a little running in the store and didn't while walking, so I'm wondering how much of a support shoe I need... :scratchchin:

So I went to the rec today and did my normal 1800 yard swim. I was running a little late, got there, and ALL the lanes were full! I don't like circle swimming, so I start tapping my foot and waiting... While waiting, 3 people, each having individual unshared lanes, were either hanging on the wall or off the starting blocks for 30 seconds to a minute or more (sometimes even looking directly at me standing there waiting!). One of them went from these stops to slowly walking, and then he stopped mid length and just stood there for over a minute! What the *&^%??? I was really getting pretty, uh, angry at those people. ;) If you don't want to swim, that's fine- just don't tie up a _(*^^$ lap lane, ESPECIALLY if they are all taken and people are waiting! Besides, if ARE there to swim, is it really good for you to swim one, maybe 2 lengths then stop for 30+ seconds? Alternate strokes, walk, something; don't just stop 'dead in the water'! Argh- pet peeve of mine if I hadn't said so before or ya' haven't noticed... Anyway, after about 10 minutes someone left in the two-lane wide area where people sometimes aqua-jog and such, but that is part of the lap pool so I took it. On the plus side, i was able to channel my anger and did the main 1750 yards in 29:05.33; lately I've been more like 30 - 32 minutes for it. :rotfl2: After that I got in 4:21 in the steam room (instead of my goal 10) but had to skip my 5 each in the whirlpool & sauna. Oh well. And while in the shower someone briefly turned off the locker room lights again today! :oweye:

On the more running related side, didn't try the new shoes yet; plan to ask DW to watch me walk and easy run on the mill in each to make sure she doesn't notice any pronating and then I'll move them into active use. :silly:

10-03-2010, 07:57 PM

BTW, I posted in the other thread if I didn't say it here, hope you had a great BD Lisa! Now if only I could fall back asleep for a few more hours yet still wake up and ellip "Monday morning"... :rolleye11:

PS- DW thinks both pairs of shoes looked OK on the mill. I started @ 3 MPH walking, then hit 6, bumped to 7. She said "Faster" (I think she was kidding, but...) I punched the max. 10 MPH button and did a quick sprint in each pair. :silly: 6 minute pace on the mill makes me a little nervous because it seems almost like begging to fall off or hit the wall (literally! :rotfl2:) but nothing bad happened, so for good measure I did it again with the second pair! ;)

She ordered some new shoes today to wear during the CHOC walk (under 2 weeks away now, WOW how time finally is starting to fly 'til DL! :D) and I picked up some sport socks for her. Not sure I mentioned it, but after her 5k we walked together on 8/7/2010 she was fairly sore and had some blister issues. We are hoping the footwear change will prevent a recurrence, esp. since the walk is the second morning of our 5 night DL trip & I'll for one be doing Commando park days! :thumbsup2: (She'll probably enjoy the proximity of VGC and give me some solo missions from time to time)

Incidentally, I'm planning to wear my Mizunos that I usually use for y short runs for the CHOC & the DCA powerwalk morning thingy, then my new NB's (if they break in OK the next 2 weeks) for my daily wear the rest of the time.

Enough rambling; I need to try heading back to bed!

Congrats to all of the W&D racers and Nono! The weather for W&D was about as perfect as an October night in WDW can be. Sadly, I didn't get to see any of the race, since I was pretty ill on Saturday night (as I posted on another thread--I owe a big thank you to the CR/BLT staff). This was on ROTE today and I about fell off my chair. Sounds like a Peacock you know? (cough..cough..)

Taper Time

'I cannot run again today,'
Said little Betty Ann Bengay.
'My quads are cramped.
My nerves are shot.
I think I might have purple snot.
My arch is pulled.
My glutes are sore.
My back it doesn’t bend no more.
My feet they have this awful smell.
I have another black toenail.
My elbow aches each time I pee.
And what’s that grinding in my knee?
I have a stress fracture. In my skull.
My friends, they say, I’m full of bull.
I think I may have pulled a lung.
Eleven miles ain’t a REAL long run!
My legs they are no longer speedy.
My husband thinks I’m really needy.
If I run more will I get faster?
Will micro-tears just cause disaster?
I think that I should carbo-load.
Uh oh. No way. Where’s the commode?
My glycogen is kinda spent.
I know my shin, it needs a splint.
My singlet smells like something funky.
And don’t you think my butt looks chunky?
My IT band no longer bends.
When will this taper ever end?
My hamstrings hurt and--what?
What’s that you say?
You say today is...marathon day?
G'bye. I’m going out to run.'

At the Orlando Airport waiting for my return flight :boohoohoo:

The Wine & Dine Half went well. I made my goal time! :yahoo:
Chip time was 1:59:05. It was a frustrating race for me though - but I'm trying to look on positive side. I started out too hard - we were in Corral A (and very excited to be there) - but I didn't ask what times were included in Corral A - and I think we stood too far forward (should have stood maybe 4/5 of the way back, but we were standing about halfway). So we started out too hard - I tried to pull back a little, but didn't want to slow down too much and miss my goal - plus I wasn't entirely sure how fast I could go. But it made the last 4 miles brutal, I was hangdog (when I get really tired, my head kinda lolls to the left).

The start was fun - Mickey and Minnie were there and they launched us with fireworks. It was awesome to be far enough forward to see it! They had several bands and characters cheering us on during the long road section. AK was neat - they had some red light up arch-type things that we ran through. The paths were a bit narrow - so that was frustrating. And it was more lit then usual, but still a little dark.

I was pretty exhausted and hanging on by the time we got to Hollywood Studios. We ran all around that place. They turned the Osbourne Lights on for us - that was awesome (at least the lights that they already have set up).

Then running by the canal, Beach club and to the finish at International Gateway. They did a good job shepherding us through. A woman asked me if I was alright after I finished - because my legs wobbled a little. I said yes, but she said she'd walk with me for a little while - and frankly, I think that may have been a good idea. But I didn't need a wheel chair or anything - I rested up, drank water, and we walked around the afterparty. It was well done - enjoyed some food and drink - lots of bands playing. But it was really crowded - worse than Friday night at Food & Wine.

all in all - a great experience. Would definitely do it again. I have a few pics and will post when I get a chance.

Cyl-e...I'd love to run through AK at night (love the evening hours there) and how neat that they turned the Osborne lights on at DS.

Tennis ended early this year, not at all the weather, just that most everyone here for the summer left and there weren't enough of us full timers to keep it going. It was good while it lasted tho!

Thanks everyone! It was a fun experience. A night-time race was pretty neat - the temperature was great (although the humidity had me sweating up a storm right away). It was challenging to figure out what to eat, but it all worked out fine.

The after-party was really crowded - kinda took the "exclusive" out of "exclusive after-party." But they had a lot going on - all the kiosks were open and lots of bands (Mo Rockin, Mulch Sweat and Shears, Taiko drummers and others). It was good to walk around after the race.

I haven't uploaded my pics yet - but the ASI pics are up and you can check out my sweaty, lolling head

My bib # is 1507, my husband's is 1510 - they put a great pic of us after the race under his number. I love the photo of us crossing the finish. I managed to kick in a really good sprint to the finish line and look triumphant while crossing!

The only real pic I have on my camera is of our goodie bags and t-shirts. I bought a very cool warm up jacket with Mickey on it as a waiter. Maybe I'll take a pic of that and post it.

We would definitely do the race again - the weather was picture perfect all weekend. I know that that may not happen again. And they did a great job having people cheering us on and bands and such along the way.

Nono, great shots!! Scott and I both commented how you always manage to have the best finish line photos. Looks like you are having a blast, and wasn't that the whole point of the trip? :) Don't feel about AF, we got a lot of peacocking to do at OUC.

Love the arms in the air Cyl-e! Those are great shots of you and your husband. Love that look of determination. Congrats again on meeting your goal. Wish you could swing coming down to OUC with us. I bet there is a 1:55 in you on a cold, flat not as crowded course!! :thumbsup2:

Thanks Cyl-e for your honest thoughts about the race. You are right though, the weather has been perfect down here and very unusual for this time of year. Usually it is still 90s in the day. Goofy I know will be a heat wave record since we all froze to death last Jan. :blech:

I have read about 2 dozen Race reports on W&D and right now we are leaning to not doing it next year. If it fit into our schedule for a fun race, I would like to do it. Right now though our Oct Half is going to be where I go for a major PR to prep for Philly. Night racing and I have a bad bad history. (research my last ToT race, ughhh sick just typing that one out) In it's place we are thinking of doing this race near St George Island Florida that is 3rd weekend of Oct then head down to F&W for 2 days. The race also benefits environmental causes of the Bay which appeals to my tree hugger inner self. ;)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LISA!!!
HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Happy Birthday Lisa! I hope you've had a fabulous time celebrating with your race!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes!! I should have come here too while I was away :oweye: I did spend time on FB

I have sort of caught up but I still don't know how nono did in her race. :confused24:

Rick and I are very glad to have earned our medal. We did not have a very fast time and I think that was mostly due to a flare I am currently in. It started before we left and I might should have started a steroid pack but I didn't and still haven't  When we got going, I was having a hard time recovering from the runs during the walks. I pretty much forced poor Rick to slow down and once he did, I was able to maintain pace pretty well with very little pain.

Rick and I are really not fans of running at night either. The race starts at our bedtime for real... That said, I think it was a really fun race. They had it very well manned with lots of support and cheering. Rick really enjoyed the bands and music. There was a guy playing a Spanish guitar and he was seriously fantastic!!!!!!!!! :yahoo:

They did really mess up though in not having any waves as that made for a very crowded race almost all the way through. Rick and I were forced to really weave in and out when we did our run portions since we do those relatively fast. A couple times we felt forced onto the grass and Rick thinks he might have stressed his ankle a bit because of that.

When we came upon the Osborne Lights all lit up, I was so excited by that - it really energized me. One of the neatest things is that I said to Rick that I thought I had turned fifty. He looked at his watch and said it was 12:02pm! Then, he proceeded to sing Happy Birthday to me while we were in a run portion. :goodvibes: It was so sweet! The medal was extra special too- very pretty. I told Rick on the walk back to our car that I hoped I was strong enough aka recovered enough to hold it up the next day, lol!

We are glad we ran it and may well do it again in the future but night races won't ever be our favorite. We enjoyed the after party but it was very crowded. We waited in line at Canada and New Zealand only and we almost closed the park down just getting those two tastes!

Just got off the 'mil; did 32 minutes w/ WU & CD. Mills still remain evil in my book, but less so than running in the dark and it was all that really fit today's schedule. Time to shower & head to work (yee-hah!)... Tomorrow s/b be a crunches/weights/ellip mix in the AM, rest day & expo for packet pickup Sat. & the 10k Sunday. Will post more details once I have 'em. :D It'll be a busy weekend in Geekdom- besides the race I've got "game night" Friday after work, going to a radio club luncheon (where I'm told I was nominated for getting an award?) OMG, so jealous that Osbourne lights were on. only saw them once (2006)!

OK, my 9-miler was decent Saturday. Better than it has been in a while. Still, my body just about gave out the last half mile. 50 min was ok last night, but I had tromped around int eh woods, climbing over logs and ducking under branches for 2.5 hours for work, so the bod was tired. Off tonight so I can give blood.

Now, we are re-arranging our LRs for our upcoming cruise. That means 10 miles this wekend. I barely made 9. Top it off, we'll be visiting my parents. SO, it will be 10 tough, hilly miles. Ugh. What will eb, will be...

I am thinking I may opt out of yoga tonight. My muscle strain in my arm is still hurting, and every time it feels better I have to go to work. 300 lb patients and the arm play havoc with each other. My yoga instructor likes to do like 1000 planks, downdogs, cobras, not good times for the arm. I am sure Mr Roz will have other ideas though about me skipping out on yoga. He looks forward to it more than me.

Jen, don't put yourself down silly goose. We all started somewhere, and look how far you have come since this time last year? So no more down talk. :poke:

Lisa. :hug1: Sorry you are still hurting. You are so incredibly tough, I will never fault whatever measures you have to do to get some pain relief.

I just ran 16 miles. It was the first time I've run over the half distance (recall I had to run walk the last few miles of my 14 miler two weeks ago). I am embarrassed to say the last mile in particular was all mental. I wanted to stop at every step. But I did
it! I have no idea how except to say I would keep telling myself I'd run to the next quarter mile marker and stop but when I'd get there I'd tell myself I could go to the next. Ok -
so the half marathon is over and I've been a busy but lazy bum all week (no real working out, just lots of walking). Because of my work and curling schedule (yes, curling the ice sport), I don't think it's practical for me to train for a half marathon during the winter. Although I'm not totally convinced about that yet. However - I definitely want to do some races next year - maybe the same series I did this year and I'm really curious to see if I keep up with my running this winter, how much faster I might be next year. I could do some 5ks - and would be curious as to how fast I would run those now.

What should I be doing? Is there a good plan for building base mileage, etc. without specifically training for something? Is there a good 5K plan that someone would suggest? Or a good long-term half marathon plan (taking into account that I'm not likely to run a half for at least 6 months)?

Nice job MM!!! 16 miles sounds like a lot relative to my norms. Who knows, maybe someday I'll run a 5k solid without doing walk intervals, then maybe 10k, perhaps longer... :silly: (Some may recall: Longest I ever ran continuously in my life was 4.76 miles IIRC during a remarkable training run in 2009. All three races (each a 5k) I did last year I ended walking regularly. In training I also broke 30 min. for 5k in 2009, but haven't come close during a race... :boohoohoo: This year I've almost exclusively been doing r/w interval training. 2010 races: Stayed with DW & walked a 5k together, r/w for the AFH, and plan to r/w the Towpath 10k Sunday...)

I feel crummy today; started last night actually. Spacey / out of it mentally, a little dizzy, upset stomach, headache & sinus congestion (Sudafed & ibuprofin helped with those two at least)... Didn't exercise this morning, and REALLY bad timing since I have such a busy weekend. Oh well; hopefully I'll start to feel better soon and everything will turn out to go well and perhaps I'll even have a little fun! :fingerscrossed:

I guess in a way I'm struggling with this as well, or at least I will be once I get back from CA. Until after that trip my biggest goal any more is "Don't get injured!!!" :thumbsup2: That said, I'm hesitant to attempt an answer by sharing my current plans since I've been told I under-train and am not reaching far enough up for my potential... Coming off a big race is hard. I would take this time to have fun--run a little at a not so hurried pace, do
some crosstraining, and enjoy your accomplishment. Take some time to evaluate what you'd like to do next, then set that goal and work towards it. My sister would tell you to enjoy this time off from the intensity of a training schedule as it will keep you from getting burnt out.

DG--your running has to be for you and about you first of all. Don't get sidetracked by trying to run to please other people. We're here for you no matter what you do.

I guess looking back when I first started I used to do the "just run to the next stop sign" then the next then the next, but it's been so long I'd forgotten. Running has seemed somewhat easy lately I guess so that it felt odd to have the feeling my legs couldn't run anymore. I mean I've had to stop from pain and I've wanted to stop because of a bad attitude but today's run reminded me of the horrible RFTT (one year anniversary this Monday!).

Mr Roz is being sent over for a work related trip. I am going to meet him over there for a few days. I am excited but nervous about traveling alone-- learning the language enough to make me fairly independent in such a short amount of time. Oh yeah and it couldn't come at a worst time money wise. We already have 2 trips on the books to WDW Dec and Jan. (warning, we may have to scale down some of our ADRs) As my dad advised today "this is what credit cards are for", and I will figure it out later. All I know now is that he gets one trip over there and we are taking it. :)

Cly-e, my only advice I can give you is don't lose your base. Run for fun and the pleasure of it, but try to keep us some mileage. It's just so hard to start over. I try to have a 25-30 mile base a week at least through out the year. I am taking 2 weeks off after Goofy however. Cool beans on curling. I found it really fun to watch this past Olympics. What part do you do?

Beth, I will take all the advice you can offer on Tuscany. The bike trip sounds fun, but maybe too cold when we are going? Lord, I just thought about biking up hills and my legs got tired. :p GL on your 6 miler! Did you ever figure out what kind of bug you had? We need to figure out a meet up for Jan.

Mr Roz and I have a 5K in the morning. Just a fitness test to see where we are after our recovery time off. I am not expecting much, and hoping not to die before the finish line. Not wearing my Garmin, going on what my body feels. We will use tomorrows race times to calcuate our paces for the next 3 months of our Goofy training cycle. (what's our 5K pace now? 10K pace now? 3000m pace now?)

So I am now a believer in Arthur Lydiard. He said to run faster at shorter distances you must run a lot of miles. As much as your body can take basically. Well this mornings race proved that to the Rozzie family. We both PR'd by over a minute. Me 22:24 (7:13 pace) , Mr Roz 20:42 (6:40 pace). All that was on marathon conditioning, only one speed workout in 3 weeks.

We were both totally shocked, speechless. I did die at the end, horrible side cramp and prayed for a earthquake to strike and swallow me into the road. I guess somehow I held on. Ran with 2 girls who pushed my pace the entire time, we were inches from each other the whole race. Really motivated me to hang on. I beat the younger one in her 20s, but the older one left me in the dust with .25 to go. Her age? 58. She was a total stud too. Age is just a number I tell ya'. Gave me hope that I am going to be doing this for a long long time. That is my ultimate goal anyway. :)

Rozzies- Congrats on the PRs & the win & Italy!!! :cheerleader:

MM- Ouch on the foot; hope it gets better soon... :fingerscrossed:

I'm still feeling crummy on and off. Just woke up from a nap and still BLAH. Race starts in 12 hours and 20 minutes. Not good. But I can move. I WILL finish, it just may end up taking a while though! :D

I wasn't impressed by the Expo. Very little information about parking, shuttles from finish back to the start (10k & halfers are supposed to park @ the start), NOTHING about spectator info. or parking (found some on the website and asking, but people seemed like I was crazy to ask? :confused24:). Shirt doesn't say anything about it being a 10k, but it is kinda' cool. I did catch a glimpse of someone with a black tech shirt and picture of a B-52 on it that looked strangely familiar... :scratchchin: There were only a handful of vendors, but one had Body Glide for $7.99 ($9.99 @ the Dick's Sporting Goods near home so I grabbed a stick) -and- they had New Balance 769 shoes on a clearance sale for $40 in a 11.5 2E! :thumbsup2: So now I got another pair of shoes to break in over the winter... I'm thinking these will be my long indoor run on the mill shoes, and the (lower end) white NBs I bought last week will go to work to be my "Walk with Walt" twice a week ~30 min shoes. (The ones there are getting older). I don't think I have EVER purchased so many pairs of shoes in such a short timespan. :silly:

Alrighty, I'll post tomorrow how things turn out- gonna' hope for the best regarding how I feel and just deal with whatever else happens.

Awesome job on the race Roz! That's great that you were able to break a PR without a watch, just on the feel of your body!:thumbsup2:

My six miler actually morphed into a 6.7 miler after cool down. I felt really great throughout, kept a good pace (with little fluctuation) and finished strong. I hit six miles at just over the one hour mark which really gave me a lift. I beat my previous time on the same route (doing a 5 miler). I did develop a cramp in my mid-calf this afternoon. We were at a festival and I was standing all the time and then when I sat down it totally stiffened on me. I'm going to ice it now and hope for the best since I'm driving to the shore in the morning (sooo much stuff to do before winter and I really want to see all of the migrating birds, so why not take advantage of the holiday on monday) and I need that leg to drive! :fingerscrossed:

We do need to figure out a meet up for January! And Roz, I'll send you my email in case you want to chat about Italy offline.

That is about a minute faster than what McMillan says is equivalent to my AF Half! :yahoo: I misread things though; finishers medals were only for full & half runners... :boohoohoo: Oh well. Still did 10 on 10/10/10 and that was the whole point of picking this race. :silly:

F&W weekend in two weeks.

My feet just hurt in general after that 16 miler; the TV certainly didn't help.

How do I figure the pace I should aim for the marathon? I really need to start practicing starting at a slower pace to try and finish whatever my goal pace should be. I think I may have run a smidge too fast during Friday's run but I don't know.

http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm

The above link will help you figure out what you should be doing each training run in. You are very wise to realize that you need to be thinking of another way to finish up. It helps me a lot to have specific paces for each type of run you I am doing. A 5K pace, 10K pace, HM pace, recovery pace etc. It helps to know what you should be doing your easy/recovery runs in to help your body recover. Going out too fast on a recovery day is just as bad as going too slow on a tempo day.

What I think helps the most is every run under 18 miles is to finish strong. Do the last miles as your fastest miles--even if its only 15 sec a mile faster, just a little faster. Then work up to finishing up at your goal pace maybe about every 3rd week on shorter LRs. This helps you mentally prepare for the pacing you will need for the full. Very important in the full to do your first few miles at your easiest pace or effort of course. By doing most of your LRs as a type of progression run, you are training your body to start slow and end strong in your race. Note I did not say fast, but finish strong. By finishing faster in training runs, you can build the strength to finish strong in your marathon. Because really it's not about what time you finish in, but that you finished your last miles without a death march. Just my 2 cents. Hope your feet get to feeling better. :fingerscrossed:

It's been about 10 days since I ran. Can I count that in the 10-10 game:D?

Congratulations DG! Sounds like you had a great race, despite being under the weather all week.:thumbsup2::D

Roz, the weather is beautiful here this weekend. I'm in my room with the windows open and I can hear the sounds of the marsh (we're on a barrier island between the marsh and the open water) and it's so peaceful. I was actually in Rehoboth Beach Running Company today (I broke down and bought a Stick) and I thought of you guys when I saw the signs up advertising the 2010 Rehoboth Beach marathon!

I will also admit that while running errands we were in Lowes, where I discovered they already have their full Christmas displays up. It was hard to walk out of there without a motion lighted Mickey Mouse for the front yard of the beach house! There was also a large lighted peacock that I thought would look nice!;)

Congrats to Rozzie and Mr. Roz for such amazing times in their 5k! And winning your age group - wow!!!

Thanks for the advice for my post-race training too. That's what I'd like to do - is just keep building a solid base over the winter - so the number of miles/wk is helpful. Is it just straight running - is there a particular pace I should be working on? Should I be doing specific types of runs (like speed, tempos, etc) - or is just putting in the miles enough?

I guess I'm afraid that if I take it too easy and just run a comfortable easy pace, that I'll lose whatever speed I had built up.

I wonder if I may have broken my toe. I can't flex it without pain. I guess it could also be muscular; it is where I've been having a bit of tenderness already. It doesn't hurt all the time. I do admit I am terrified of any injury that could put an end to my marathon dreams.

According to the calculator I should average an 11:36 min mile. That seems a little fast to me. I guess all the other half marathon and shorter distances are what I generally do, but when I ran this pace Friday for my 16 miler I felt wiped. I guess that's why the actual pace for training runs is a little slower.

Official results are up for the TowPath 10k!

I was 311th overall (out of 528) and 23rd in my age group (out of 31). Chip time was 1:01:27.57. :D I didn't stop my watch until after I crossed the second timing mat, so I was hoping it might shave a few seconds down officially from my guesstimate! So I wasn't in the top 50%, but I still did wonderfully against myself- per McMillian it was the best race of my life for equivalent effort at any of the distances I've done... :silly: His calculator also says I can equivalently beat my thus far unmet goal of a sub-30 5k now. Hmmmmmm... :scratchchin: Photos aren't up yet but my bib # was 3271 and eventually they should be at http://www.brightroom.com/view_event.asp?EVENTID=61988

Roz- right now the only thing coming up that I'm registered for in the un-timed fund raising 5k "CHOC Walk" next weekend. Oh yeah, that also means I'll be in Disneyland in a few days!!! :yahoo:

MM- Sure hope the toe turns out to be OK and doesn't end up being a big problem for you race wise!!! :fingerscrossed:

Cyl-e I'm not sure what your Goals are but I like the 35-50 mile range average per week. Right now the week looks like this- Monday off, Tuesday- interval speed work, Wednesday- mile base/recovery run, Thursday- tempo run, Friday off or base run, Saturday medium long base run or race, Sunday long run . Sprinkle in some yoga, strength and core work 2-3 days a week. Lastly have a 3 week build and one week recovery cycle in your training. I try to hold a 40 plus mile average. As NoNo would say "Thats when the magic happens". Hope this helps.

Cly-e, just like Mr Roz said. You don't need to train like a maniac, but I would do at least one tempo run a week. Keeps you in shape and you will be that much ahead of the game when you do start the program. Plus you will be faster!! :goodvibes: Mileage in the bank is a beautiful thing.

All this talk about non-race training is keeping me thinking (Like Gaston- a dangerous passtime, I know?). So currently I'm still leaning toward sticking to my basic plan of running for 30+ minutes on Tuesdays & Thursday & 60+ on Saturdays, then swim Sundays, ellip & crunches Mon., and crunches/weights/short ellip Wed. & Friday. I like doing the cross training and am not ready to try and do more than ~45 minutes during the week including warm up & cool down.

HOWEVER, I am becoming a lot more intent on trying to use 'Mill torture' ;) during the winter to migrate from run/walk intervals to running the whole time, with a goal sustained pace to at least break a 1 hour 10k... I'm very close to averaging that now, so it seems a reasonable goal to switch to as I eliminate the walks. The trick will be slowing down my running to something I can maintain that long and I think the mill will help! :silly: {Not wanting to fall off the back or crash into the front is fairly strong encouragement to run at it's speed :D - so I'll work on setting it at my goal speed and fight the urge to push any buttons! :rotfl2:} I did run the first 12 minutes (1.25 miles) of yesterday's race straight through though, so that was promising. :thumbsup2:

I read (I think in Runners World) that to not lose your base you shouldn't run less than 50% of your longest run and week.

Four miler tonight went pretty well. My foot didn't bother me too much during. Nonetheless I have an appointment with a sports med doc in 2 1/2 weeks. I've been meaning to get established with one but I've been putting it off in fear he will find something and tell me to take a break. I am so neurotic about my running!

I really love running in tights. I just got a pair of short tights that are so comfortable. I'm also glad it's heated back up so I could wear them.

DG good luck on developing your own theory for running. I think it's important. Why do you say you'll
have it in 2 weeks?

I find that a 25 mpw is great for recovery, and at least 30mpw to keep a base for me.

I agree that DG needs his own theory, like you said--we all need our own theory. I think that is what is good about sharing our different ideas/practices, as we can get nuggets from what works for us individually. I know I have picked up a great many nuggets from Nono over the past 2 years. Actually every single peacock member has helped me get to where I am today. Not that I am high and mighty on some mountain top, but I do feel like I am in a better place than where I was this time last year.

Glad your foot is better. You had me scared!!

My arm still hurts. I am being a very bad patient though and refusing to make a appt. I say if it's still hurting this time next month I might make a appt. I think it's just a muscle strain that can't heal because of what I do for a living.

Yea DG!!!!!! (I'm so darn far behind!)

Having a bear of a time trying to transition to my new plan on an in-between two marathon week. Oh, and weekend guests who I didn't know were coming until Friday afternoon. And they came Friday night. :blech: I'm so out of "summer mode" but we managed.

Oh, so I'm trying out a few weeks of Brad Hudson's old people's (masters) marathon training plan if I can get on the horse completely by next week...

My plan for Atlantic City's Marathon this weekend is to walk miles 1, 10, & 19. First one is my warm up. Second one is a whole mile fueling stop. I just HAVE to figure out how to get more nutrition in me, and this will be my way of forcing me to ingest. Mile 19, well, final rest and refuel before the "easy 6.2" to the end.

Best part about this race? Complimentary dinner the night before at Bally's casino, and at the award's ceremony, there's a drawing from all racers for $25,000. Now that's a prize!!!! All for $85. How could I not do my long run during their race?? :)

nono- Sounds like great training run!

Tried out my new New Balance 69s on the 'mill this morning. First impressions are good. I always find I take a little time to get used to the feel of new shoes (even another pair of the same model). I don't see it as 'breaking in' mind you, just acclamation on my part and making sure there aren't any problems. After a 2.5 minute warm up walk @ 4 MPH I did intervals of 6 minutes running @ 6 MPH to 1 min. walking @ 4 MPH. Then when I got to the last minute I maxed the mil to 10 MPH and held that for 60 seconds. Done that a couple times now and although I don't exactly find it easy it is a rewarding way to finish, esp. as long I continue to manage not to fall off! :rotfl2: Ended with an ~3 min. walk slowing from 3 MPH down to 2.5. Totally 36 minutes w/ WU/CD. Happy with that! A step twoards 6.3 MPH for 60 minutes straight excluding WU/CD... ;)

Thanks all for the support on my own goofy (and no, I do NOT mean the Race & Half :silly:) training ideas. :thumbsup2:

DG-Sounds like your theory is coming along, I know you'll figure something out!

nono--Atlantic City sounds like sooooo much fun. Are you in Southern NJ?

So I just realized, when I opened my email and found my eRegistration ticket, that my first competitive race (as an adult) is this weekend! Even though I signed up for this before I was officially training for the WDW half, it fits perfectly with my training schedule (Higdon recommends runners do a 5k and 10k while training). Only bad thing right now is DH is also doing the race and let's just say he hasn't been as diligent with his C25k as I've been with half training...so I'm not sure how he's going to do. Originally we were planning on running together, but now he's telling me I should just go ahead and run and meet him at the finish. I feel bad about leaving him, so I'm not sure what to do.

Beth, well I will tell you my feelings about spouses in races. If he has not put forth the effort you have in training, why should you give up your race? I know I would never ask anyone to pull up and give up a good race time just because I was slower. You enter the race as individuals and should each run your own race. Scott has beaten me in races, I have beat him in races. Its all good at end of day. Hope you have a great race!! GL!

CN- I have only entered one "race" w/ DW so far, but the plan was always for us to do it together. She pretty much bailed on her C25k plans after week 2 or 3, but we still stuck together for it despite her walking the whole thing. It was her first 5k and my 'job' was to make sure she met her goals of finishing in under an hour and not being last. She had said she didn't want to hold me back, but I wanted to support her venturing out of her comfort zone and attempting a 5k- she was really nervous! That said, I knew I could guarantee that worst case was she'd be 2nd last (I would have fallen on my sword if necessary and stopped for a bit @ the 3 mile mark and just stare at the finish line until she crossed it; luckily it didn't come to that! ;)) and I paced her to keep her under 60 minutes- we actually finished with several to spare. :D

BUT, I agree w/ Rozzie that if you entered this as an actual RACE and especially since this is a waypoint in your half training plan then you still putting forth your best effort and splitting up is perfectly acceptable and quite possibly the right thing to do. That is especially true since he decided not to train adequately and says he is OK with you going off on your own. For better or worse (and I don't always like to admit it to be sure!) choices have consequences...

GL deciding how to handle it- I don't think there is an absolute right or wrong answer! :fingerscrossed:

I asked him again and it seems he really just wants me to beat our friend that also entered the race with us. The friend and I ran together when we were in Florida and he was huffing and puffing, so I should be able to do that.

Now the other question--do I try to run this thing the whole way through, even though I've been training as a run walk? Is there a big chance of injury if I do try to run? Sorry, I'm such a newbie!

Personally I'd follow the "nothing new on race day" montra and still plan for a run/walk since that is how you trained. Perhaps run a little faster (use that race day adrenaline! :thumbsup2:) and/or for a longer ratio, but still R/W...

Granted I pushed that advice to the extreme for my 10k, but succeeded with it. Since it was my last race of the season and I had already been feeling lousy on and off (but was doing OK at the start) I decided to go for broke. :silly: If I had other events I was actively preparing for later I would have been more cautious, but I'm not a hard core competitor and in fact still try NOT to be, so take my opinion FWIW!

Now the other question--do I try to run this thing the whole way through, even though I've been training as a run walk? Is there a big chance of injury if I do try to run? Sorry, I'm such a newbie!

DH's ultimate goal is to do a half Ironman. ;) I keep telling him that he needs to actually train to run longer distances if that's the goal, but he is resistant and starts grumbling about "torture". I'm going to keep on him though--I would love for us to do a long race together one day. :D In his defense, he is 40 (nothing against that, it's been an awesome age for him so far!) so it's harder for him to get started with the running than it was for me in my late 20s, but I do like to remind him that age is truly just a number.

So Mr. Roz, that's a vote for giving it my all?

PS-My boss just found out that I'm doing the Disney Half and she made a really big deal out of it. Like a "wow, that will be such an amazing accomplishment, let us know about your progress" big deal. It's nice to feel like the folks at work don't think I'm super crazy!

Tell your DH that I did my first 1/2 marathon at the age of 56 so there's no excuse. Did the USAF half in Sept. a week shy of my 58th birthday.

Any time goals for the Chocolate walk? :D

Lets see- how about sub 1.5 hours? :confused24: Since I will be sticking w/ DW and I think the walk rules probably include things like "Play nice", "No running", and "Do not push or shove others" (it is a children's hospital benefit after all ;)) [plus I want to try and stay with "Team MousePlanet (http://www.chocwalk.net/mouseplanet)" so we can be in their group picture on Main Street] it is really kinda' hard to plan a time... Plus I might want to take character pics and such along the way to boot!

FYI on TMP: They are giving us each a free MP hat :goodvibes: & more importantly AVP (The Team's leader and a moderate on (plus founder of?) MousePlanet.com) is doing packet pickup for everyone (which is very good since we won't be in the Anaheim area in time to do it ourselves!). Since both of those things are WAYYY cool, I feel a little obligated to actually try and 'participate' with them! :silly:

The team has raised over $10k for CHOC and currently has 78 members, so it seems to be a pretty good group to have hooked up with. Naturally Peacock & DVCNews events & meets are better, but since no one else from here will be @ CHOC ya' gotta' do what ya' gotta do! :D

EDIT: I just noticed your joke was about Chocolate, not CHOC! :oweye: So to that end, I read today that Paradise Pier also makes a Kitchen Sink Sundae. :eating: So, if we do a "Chocolate walk" over there from VGC to try one, my walk goal would be < 5 minutes each way, and my eating goal would be < 2 hours...

Jen, you really really really need to get a foam roller. They are under $20 and free shipping from Running Warehouse and think they are worth the investment. Just think of every thing else you might spend $20 on and I think you will find it's worth the investment. You probably have some type of knot in there that is dying to get worked out. I get them and they instantly feel better when I roll them out. Before I roll them out, it is agony.

I think I told you this already, but biking in Tuscany is HARD. But soooo worth it. We had this german woman in our group when we did it and she put us all to shame!

athenna--I second Roz's recommendation on a roller. I bought a Stick last weekend and it's awesome. So saves my calves.

Just got home from the Baltimore Marathon expo. It was on the club level of the Ravens stadium, so it felt really cramped. My running store had some good deals on Brooks stuff, so I got a long sleeved tee. Also got some gels to try out, after a very frustrating discussion with one of the store employees. Sometimes I think running store employees forget some of us might just be getting into the sport. Sadly no discounts on Under Armour (which I love--especially since the company is Baltimore based) even though they're one of the premier sponsors of the event. I picked up for me, DH, and our friend, so I didn't even get to check out the bag. Going to do that now...

Ok - so, we've done a number of bike trips in the past, and my training for those was, well, uh, nothing. So my training goal for this bike trip, now that I'm 40, is to do, well, more than nothing.

My first bike trip (in France with my sister) was pretty decent mileage and I recall my leg muscles hurting so much during the middle of the week that I couldn't sleep. One would think I would learn from that...

We are going to New Zealand - have wanted to do so for many years. I'm not quite sure what the daily mileage will be - New Zealand tends to have more serious biking, but we're going with a company (VBT) that I view as less serious and lower mileage - so it will be moderate, I suspect.

We've been trying to bike on the weekends at least one day for a good 1.5hrs. We haven't done any hills - which we really should to get ourselves conditioned. And I'm starting to go to spinning classes - I'm going to try to spin once a week and bike ride on the weekend. Plus running. If you do spinning - the one thing I'd recommend is not spending a lot of time out of the saddle - spin instructors love to get out of the saddle (relieves the boredom?), but I don't think that mimics real bike riding very much. I don't spend much time out of the saddle at all when bike riding - so I tend to stay sitting, crank up the resistance to work my legs.

I'm sure it will still not be what they would recommend for training - but, heck, it's more than I've done in the past!

We did do one trip in Tuscany - and it is all rolling hill - there is no flat. Or I should say- that is the Tuscan flat. But a beautiful place. And the food is oh, so delicious...

So, I guess I might be doing a race without my feathers in 11 months... ;) Sorry gang! I just texted him to see if he'd be OK w/ me being the team captain; I want to use the name "Jedi Geeks". We have another friend of ours we just started running recently (he did his first half-marathon @ the Towpath this past Sunday; we say each other around 1.25 miles because parts of the half & 10k courses were shared) and we might ask him to fill out the team. Run at least one relay (I'm looking at a 2 person 10 miler as well as the 5 person ARR marathon ones)
Do a 5k in under 30 minutes, running the whole thing
Do a 10k in under an hour

Definite Woohoo! It's a good investment, since you are having so many pains that should be eased by it. Something to remember -- you are working your body in a new way. Nothing wrong with giving it a little TLC too (even though the first time you roll, you will not :scared07: be thinking TLC!)

"Experienced runners get different injuries than beginners. Beginners are famous for shin splints and runner's knee. Long-time runners work for their injuries. The most common injuries seen in experienced runners are muscle knots or 'trigger points'."

See - you're an experienced runner!

Do you have an old pair of sweat socks lying around? Cut the feet out and make cheap, throw-away arm warmers. You'll be glad you did. Also make yourself a garbage bag dress. It helps cut the windchill. You can discard right at gun time.

I wouldn't go with something you haven't worn, plus it is supposed to heat up enough that you might end up warm in long sleeves. If the wind dies at all and the sun is out, it could be rough.

Rest seems to have made my leg feel better, but I haven't tested that out yet. So I'm going to the track later and see how it feels...I can't promise I can do the sceduled 7 miler, but we'll see what happens.

Thanks team!

I went I went! 4:49 and change. (according to my garmin). One of these days, this has to be my target race. It is definitely a fast course! Had a GREAT time...much more my style. (Course wasn't crowded and people weren't yelling from the sidelines all the time!)

Definite progress over 2 weeks ago. Whew!

I'll write up a report and post a link to it. Did I ever post my link to Twin Cities? (I kind of went into a 2 week coma, esp. with everyone in my house but me getting sick this week...)

But the short story is fueling went well!
-No water from 1 hr before. I did have a banana at Caesars for $1.50!
-Coconut water (and water -- that's been missing!) for the first 9.5 miles. About 12 oz. coconut water.

Then I decided what the hell, I'll try new stuff during the marathon, because it is only a training run. My girlfriend from high school gave me a Hammer gel a year ago, and I still had it. Our running store only carries them. I decided it was time to try them. So....

-1 Hammer gel in Mile 10 (espresso w/caffeine)
-about 25 goldfish (whole grain)

Water consistently from this point.

-1 Hammer gel in Mile 19 (apple cinnamon, no caffeine) with water.

Family was at mi 21. I stopped and chatted a bit. I had another swig of coconut water, a few more goldfish, and that was it except for water. It seemed about right. :goodvibes:

Nono, I only use Hammer products. Good safe clean product. Really like their recovery drink too. None of the junk, all nature's fuel. :goodvibes: Sounds like a great training run!! :thumbsup2:

Beth, loved the peacock tree!! Mama Gail, Scott and I bought some peacocks in Germany when we were there in Jan. I still have 1 of them, the other one fell victim to Peter the dog. Sigh....

Awesome race nono! Did you carry the coconut water and goldfish with you? I just bought a bunch of gels at the Baltimore expo, no Hammer though, just Clif (which I was happy to see are also sold at our Whole Foods).

In case anyone is interested in more 5k recap (with pictures!) I've posted over at the blog: http://www.990square.com/2010/10/baltimore-running-festival-2010/

Clif is good too. Just want to stay away from GUs if you are avoiding artifical stuff. I personally just like Hammer better, but it's good to try a little bit of everthing and see your favorite.

You and me both! :blech:

I have a little success to share today. Went for a 12 mile progression run with Coach Hardarse (Mr. Roz) and lived to tell the tale. Boy he will shred you if you give him long enough leash. He decided for "fun" we will do our normal long run backwards so we get all the hills at the end--all the while I am trying to hang on to the progression. Did manage a 7:45 my last mile. Big confidence booster but my calves haaaaaate me now.

Very nice blog, Beth! I like your pictures too; I am still blown away by your speedy self! :yahoo:

nono, I definitely would love to read write ups of both your last marathons; please link for us :goodvibes:

Rozzie, you and Coach Hardarse  are unbelievable! I wish Rick and I could egg each other on to the heights that you two do! :w00t:

Well, since honesty is always the best policy, Rick and I finally decided to skip our ten miler this weekend because of my flare and the fact that the plumbing problem seriously trashed our schedule. Youngest son was in to visit which further messed up Sunday. We are still on track for marathon training though because of our 13.1 mile run at Disney. We are just going to pick up with the plan next week. I told Rick no skipped runs from here on; we definitely cannot afford to if he is going to be ready!

Regarding the flare, I gave in to the steroids and surprisingly, I have yet to feel better really. They have helped a bit but certainly thought I would be more improved by now :confused24: I am going to add to my weekly workouts since I have been rather lax lately on those and hope that this will add to my fitness level. :fingerscrossed:

Awesome race nono! Did you carry the coconut water and goldfish with you?

I carried the coconut water from the start in a reunsable container and dropped it off into my bag with Mr. Nono at Mile 9.5. Then I picked up my baggie of goldfish. I ate 1/2 of them, and then stashed them in my armpocket (http://www.armpocket.com/). My gels were in my new racebelt, which worked out well. I forget which the shop ordered for me, but it worked just right, and was easy to adjust along the way. My family met me again at mi. 21, but that was mostly for fun!

Here's a couple of contrasting pics from the last two weeks:

Twin Cities, Mi 21.5:

Atlantic City, Mi 21:
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d51/nono_33/P1000371compressed.jpg

Yesterday, I was definitely feeling much better at the same time! My husband felt confident enough to let me run to the finish and go home by myself (kids were dragging). At Twin Cities, he was waiting right at the end of the chute, looking worried. I don't think I look that bad in the first photo, but it is nice that he was concerned!

Meanwhile, in Anaheim: Trip got off to an annoying start after we left LAX, but is going much better now. FYI, I've started a shell thread of a trip report (http://dvcnews.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6837)and am Tweeting (http://twitter.com/DISVCGeek)about things live throughout the day.

CHOC walk seemed short (2.60 - 2.80 miles: I forget which plus I found the finish rather ambiguous), but I need to download my Garmin @ home to get a better idea. BTW, they actually did announce "This is not a race so NO RUNNING during the walk" during the opening ceremony right before a go... I thought I was (mostly) joking about that before.

This morning I showed up for the Get Up & Go Power Walk (registered yesterday afternoon) as did a Mouse Cop on the inside of the gate + two other walkers (who said they signed up last night about 10:15) but no other Disney employee did- so it was canceled w/o any notice. Rather frustrating; wish they would have left me a voice message on the room phone or something but oh well. So, since I was already dressed for it I ran 3.19 miles instead! :silly: Again, I'll post more detials once I d/l Garmin and have fun following both the CHOC and this run's routes on Google Earth...

With a little luck they will do a GU&G Wednesday morning AND NOT CANCEL IT  but if not I'll make due. Besides, I'll be older then so I may need more rest... ;)

Later gang & I hope everyone has a good rest of the week; I may not be online much again until I get home.

I need to lose a bit of weight so that it fits comfortably, but that is the plan. It is a Peacock event. And, it isn't a marathon, so no conflicts! :D

Boston Marathon opened and closed today. They were having registration problems in the first hour (which I excpected). Got my verification around 10 a.m. Now, to train.

Rozzie, I felt pretty bad last night, even crawled from my den to the stairs! Woke up at 2:30 a.m. and spent a couple hours awake, finally slept a bit. Other than my quads, which took a beating, and some out edge achilles pain, today, I feel fine. I have a lot of work to do in the next month before Phila...but first I need to rest and cross-train this week. I'm feeling good about the overall plan, but it's all a crapshoot! ;)

Nono--You definitely look more alert in that second picture! Do you think your big difference was fueling?

I'm pretty sore now. Left work late + chance of rain = torture session on the mill, which always seems to leave me sore. Throw in the fact that I was still a bit sore from Saturday, and my body made it 3.7 miles before crying uncle. The main thing that made me stop was some pain in my hip, which was new. So I figured it was time to get off and do some long stretching. Seemed to help.

Nono--You definitely look more alert in that second picture! Do you think your big difference was fueling?

Oh yea! Fueling. Sleep. Having run some more miles with more rest... I ran TCM after driving overnight Thursday night with only 1.5 hrs sleep, then only had about 4 hours sleep Saturday night before the race. I had only peaked at a 14 mile long run with a 4 mile recovery later in the day the weekend before...and then not really being able to ingest much...oh yeah, that mattered!:D I guess it was really a disaster in the making, but I just took it easy and had a fun day. It really then helped me for Atlantic City!

I had an inkling that the ingredients that make the chews or blocks solidify might be the problem, which is why I was willing to try something new with the gel during the race. So far, my theory holds, but who knows??

I am going with a similar plan for fueling during Philadelphia. Going to add one more gel to the mix, I think. I have a month to obsess on this though, so who knows! :silly:

I need to figure out a running solution now that it's getting dark so early--I don't know if I can handle two runs a week on the mill. It's not that I wouldn't mind running in the dark, I'm worried about safety.

Also, I'm hoping one of you Disney Marathon veterans can offer me some advice on this one...my coworker who is also running the WDW Half sent me this link http://adisneyworldsports.disney.go.com/media/ewwos/pdf/sports/rundisney/RaceRetreatWDW.pdf for the "VIP tent" at the Half. Is there a reason this is a bad idea?

athenna--the only bad thing is it's going to be $75 to get my husband in the tent too. ah well.

I might as well just start wiring Disney money out of my paycheck. Between this and the D23 event, it's going to be an expensive 5 weeks for me at the world!

cloudnut220
10-19-2010, 11:03 AM
and since I'm all full of questions today, I have another one. This one is a bit more serious than the last, so...

My friend who ran the 5k with me wants to do a 10k now. I was thinking about signing up for one on 11/14 and I told him, and now he's thinking of doing it too. I know he's an adult and can do what he wants, but should I try to talk him out of it? He sort of running trained for the 5k--he also plays ultimate frisbee twice a week and works out with a trainer--but not really. Is the jump to a 10k just too much at this point...we really only have 3 1/2 weeks before the race. I feel like I can do it (the training plan I'm on actually says I should run a 10k in 2 1/2 weeks, but I figure I'm okay to do it a week later) but I just don't want him to get hurt (literally).

nono
10-19-2010, 11:35 AM
cloudnut, I don't know....I'd let him make up his own mind. After all, if he wants a professional to evaluate his idea, he'd consult a professional coach. As a friend, he's probably looking to you for support and well, some :cheerleader:.:cheerleader: .

If you are worried about his potential for hurting himself, maybe forward him articles from runnersworld, etc. that talk about common injuries. That way he's informed.

P.S. The Atlantic Ctiy medal is also a bottle opener. My dh noticed that immediately. I used it today to open a Mexican Coke. I'm in love. Now I have a reason to carry my medal with me all the time. It's also a survival tool!

CN- The Tent would have been great last year during the record cold but the price is too steep for me and it closes at 530 am. too much money for too little time.

I think the 10 k is in a perfect time frame. I think you should put in a 7-10 mile long run in this weekend or next. A good work out early next week would be 5x1 mile @ 10k pace with 2 minute recovery between each repeat. Based on your time from your 5 k you could do a 9:40-9:50 minute mile pace. Try that work out @ 9:40 pace and see how it goes. It will determine where you are and what you should do. I say go for it and leave him in the dust again.:driver:

Jen...only you know if you will be able to do your 4 miler this weekend. Listen to your body and if you feel well enough to go out then do it. You don't have to go to the track feeling like you have to get a really good time.

Rozzie
10-21-2010, 01:58 PM
What I usually do Jen when I can't decide to run or not is to go out for 10 min. If I feel okay, I keep going another 10 min, and so on. I think I picked that up from Carrie. You just don't know how you are going to feel until you get out there. I know sometimes I feel better after being out there, and sometimes I feel worse. I would rest today and tomorrow and then reevaluate.

Sorry you are having such a bad time with things. Your life seems like mine, when it rains, it pours. Just know that all this shall pass away. You won't always be unemployed, there will be a job. This is just a temporary thing. Just don't give up on the job search, make a little progress everyday for finding a way out. You will get out, promise. :hug1:

I have one thing to add, Jen. If you get out there and do some or even up to 4 miles, I believe you should go without your watch. Let your body dictate your speed because you have been sick and because your calf has been injured.
