Okay, I was thinking of sending everyone a general PM, but thought it would be easier to just post this question.
Concerning the Porncess. When is your arrival date? I think all of us will be somewhere March 7, night before. I thought it would be fun if we all could get together and have a lowkey dinner somewhere. :eating: I had Olivia's in mind, since a lot of us are staying at/near OKW. If someone else had somewhere else in mind, I am all ears for other opinions. Even maybe Turf Club or something similar. I thought about cooking up (or should I say Mr. Roz cooking up ;)) a pasta dinner in the villa, but we don't check in until March 7. There is always a possibility that the villa takes forever to be ready KWIM.
So what do ya'll think? If you already have plans, no worries. I just thought it would be a lot of fun to see each other the night before. So who wants to join Gail, Scott and I for dinner? In a few days I'll call and make a ressie. I can't believe we are almost at 5 months and counting!
I'm in for dinner and Olivias is good with me!
Did my 8 miles tonight at a 9:01 pace...for 957 calories burned if you can believe a garmin 201. I ran pretty fast 'cause it kept me from heaving my lunch, but I had a secondary motivation. The sun was going to be setting and the sunsets have been spectacular lately. If I ran the first 6 at a good clip, I'd be in perfect viewing area for the last 2 mi so that I could really watch the sky. Worked like a charm. Really beautiful. I need to start taking my camera with me so I can share this stuff. I never tire of the sunrises and sunsets around here.
Oh I should also say I'm becoming a huge fan of the fudge for fuel idea. I forgot my water bottle tonight, and had a salty lunch, so I wasn't set up well for a great run. I got a little square of fudge (about 1/6 of a real piece) at about mi. 5.5 and it really made all the difference for the rest of my run.
Here's there website if anyone wants to try this out:
http://www.fudgekitchens.com/fudge.html
If anyone ends up liking this as fuel, I'll bring fresh stuff for you in March.

I love fudge, but wouldn't it be really messy if you carry it on a run? Might be a nice treat for after the run. Love the peanut butter and chocolate marshmallow myself. Used to love watching them making the fudge and salt water taffy on the boardwalk.
Gail, OK now you'll know how weird I am. If I'm taking a Clif shot block on a run, I bite it in half and wrap each one in wax paper. So, I was figuring on just taking a piece of fudge, cutting it down, and wrapping it up in wax paper. Think it would work?

I just took a clif shot block with me on Sat. for the first time and I wraped mine in foil, so no you aren't weird. I'm not sure that the fudge would stay firm enough during the race. So, I guess you are just going to have to do a test run then so we will know for sure. If I had my choice between the Clif blocks or fudge, well the fudge would win hands down.
I'm going to give it a try for real. I'm also wondering if popping the squares in the freezer would work if it's extra hot out...

I was just going to suggest that! Nono, you may be on to something big here. I can see the advertisement now..."Nono's fudge shots!" :thumbsup2:

Nooooo...if this works, we're keeping this among ourselves! Shhhh! It'll be our secret fuel.
So, I just decided I'm probably not racing the 10 mi race in PA on Oct. 18 that's on my schedule. I just think my sister needs more time to get her house in order...and not have guests. So, now I'm thinking of doing the Atlantic City Half Marathon on Oct. 19. It's not known as a great marathon, but I'd only be running the half, and knowing it's non-greatness going in...well that would help right? Plus, it would give me another opportunity to lay down a time to know how far I'm off from my "peacock prediction" for the Porncess. Thinking, thinking....

LIsa - WTG on the great run!!
Roz - Great job ont eh run and congrats fro being anchor of teh half marathon relay. You will be great!!!! It will be great practive fro March!
nono - OK, it'll be our secret. SOunds soo good. Now I reemeber why I have been really wanting to make my home made fudge lately. ;) Hop eAtlantic City is a great race fr you!
Gail - WTG on feeling good while running!!!
I did my half on Saturday. I have a cold and it was hotter than it was suppoed to be and I basically just sucked. We'll chalk that one off and look to the next one. I ws very sad that my quads were really tight adn gaveme lots of problems. I though my biking was doing good things for them.
Also, I haev lost some of the mental endurance I need fo LRs. Tri's break things up so much better. That's life. Can't PR every race.

Oh, I'm in for a Saturday dinner. LLL is to!!! :cheerleader: Olivia's is fine. They do have pasta, right? I've only had breakfast there. ( chocolate berry freanch toast stugg. Yum!)
Penne Pasta with Shrimp - with Asiago Cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, baby spinach, olive oil and garlic $18.99; with grilled Chicken $17.99; as a vegetarian entree $16.49
(from allears)
Or do you need red sauce? If so, we can call ahead and see if they'll put a runner's special on for that night. The manager is pretty accomodating there. (She still remembers you Rozzie!)
Got my 2 lbs. of fudge today on the way to the fish store. It was the "buy two" get a box of salt water taffy promo. Couldn't resist. Interestingly, on the box it says you can freeze indefinitely, but don't refrigerate.
So, I got to work cutting up my squares of fudge into tiny "shots". A lb. of fudge will last a long time! First box is chocolate coconut and pistachio. Second box is cherry vanilla and peanut butter. I feel faster already.
Got new rubber horseshoes for the kids. Gotta take them to the beach to see if they can konk each other on the head with them. Later!
Oh, and just a little arial shot of Olivias before I go:

That made my day nono!! You know how to speak to this girls heart. :) So so far, we have for our big Last Supper---
Rozzie (2)
Gail (1)
Laura/Carrie (2)
Nono (4?)
Just waiting to hear from Lisa to see if she would like to join us. Also I know Stimparoo and the Butler (Mr. Stimpy) will be down, so I am going to automatically include them without hearing from them. They can always decline. :p Who else am I missing? I feel like there is someone else, and my mind has blanked. (a very common occurrence....)
Carrie, sorry about your race. But you finished, right? You are still alive right? Have a piece of fudge--it's all good! :D

Okay, what time is good for everyone? I was going to call today and go ahead and get something on the books. Is the 6pm range good for everybody? Nono, you got little ones so tell me what's best for their schedule. :)
My little ones are not running, so they don't get a vote!
6 is good for me though. Earlier is too much like, well, LUNCH! :eating: :)
Well this week (I book my weeks Mon - Sunday) is a 20 mi week, and I have yet to start! Alarm went off today and I just said "Forget it." So, I will run while the kids nap, as Mr. Nono is in town (luxury). And since it's no longer hot, Ms. Renee can come along. I'll clock 5 mi. 4x between now and Sunday and call it a week. Next week is 26 miles total, so I'll need to be sure to start early in the week!
In fact, here's my schedule totals through Jersey Week:
20, 26, 20, 27.1 (half marathon week), 25, 27, 15. I'm not racing the half-marathon, but using it as a training race. That's why no serious step-down the following week. Also, I'm not kidding myself -- there's no way I'll run more than a couple times while at Disney, and that's with Gail's help, so I had to back-load some miles into that week after the half. Usually, that would be a 20 mph week, but I need to pick up the 5 I'll likely lose at WDW.
My 20 mph weeks are running 4 days only v. 5. I find it has made scheduling my runs so much easier. Finding 5 days when Mr Nono's on the road is sometimes more than a little challenging. Plus, I like only doing a long run every-other week. It doesn't seem to affect my overall performance, and does seem to keep my legs fresh and my mind sane. :silly:
Though I'm doing a 12 mi long run the week before Jersey week in the middle of the night 'cause Mr Nono flies out that morning, so I'm not sure that any of this is sane. Thank goodness for the dog to keep me company!

6 is fine with me Rozzie.
You know - if they had just changed the angle of those round areas on the OKW pool, it would have REALLY been a Mickey! So close as it is.

LLL.....did my x-training at Curves yesterday. I love going there because I have some company while I'm working out. I walk/run by myself so it is mighty boring. I try to remember my ipod on my Sat. LRs it helps some.
nono....I get exhausted just reading about your runs. Don't forget to let us know how the fudge works out.
To me the exhausting part is figuring (and constantly refiguring) the schedule. ;) Getting out there and doing -- well it's my only alone time. Also, it's just less effort than it was in the first two years. Trust me, that part will come!

Me, me, me too!!!!! I know my mom would love to do this, please count us in your totals, Rozzie!! Somehow, I lost my way again. I think I am gonna put this thread in my calendar for my phone so I can remember to check daily!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :silly: I just love this thread :D
Thanks for all the congrats on my slow jogging :goodvibes: kinda silly to be so excited about it! I did do my LR this past Saturday of six miles and all went well. I did the whole thing in fast intervals on my TM because it made it go by less tediously. It was hot here still for a run outside. This Saturday is the real deal in my MFM training....I have to run eight miles  It has been a while since I did that many! In training, I have never run more than ten miles and I did that only once last December :scared07:
Oh, and nono, I LOVE the idea of fudge shots and that first flavor you mentioned sounds so delicious!!!! :eating: Count me in for the secret fuel too and I think freezing it is an awesome idea.
Carrie, sorry you had such a challenging half marathon - but you did it right?! That makes it fabulous training for future PR's  Have you been focusing on stretching your quads and hamstrings after those bike rides?
I am glad you are healing well, Gail and I am really starting to look forward to this Princess race since all of you will be there (waving at Laura too!) :yahoo:

Roz - Thansk so much for handling teh ressies. Oh, and I think I will make "have a piece of fudge, it's all good" my new motto!
Lisa - nothing silly about celbrating victories! That's what we're here for! *hanign my head in shame* No, I have not been good at stretching adn have not gotten to yoga in a while. lesson learned. :(
nono - Your life in general makes me tired, let alone your workouts.
LLL - Hope you can find that motivation. Do we have to rev up teh nothing bus again? ;)
Gail - I really miss Curves. Finally quit last year as with running 3 to 4 times a week, and doign yoga, I coudl not get there.
Well, I have been on teh DL. Got my sinus infection diagnosed yesterday. Feeling much better, except my teeth hurt adn energy ws way low. head for scrapping weekend around 11:30 today. So, I will rest until Saturdya and then maybe just do an hour. Have a great weekend everyone!
Motivation? Did somebody say motivation? I need to know where the motivation store is...
I don't have much motivation. What I have is discipline. And guilt. And an overwhelming CHEAP gene.
Discipline. Yeah -- since I create my schedule, I have to to do it. Period. I almost NEVER want to go for my run unless the kids and Mr. Nono are driving me crazy. But discipline says, "You committed to it on the schedule." And I go do it.
Guilt. Oh yeah. On the days I ever skip (where it can't be made up in the same week) boy do I get feeling heaps of guilt. I don't like that feeling, so I avoid it when I can.
Cheap gene. Says, "I'm not buying you new clothes when you own all these functional, non-stretching clothes. If you go running, you burn a little under a hundred calories a mile. Look at all these clothes. Put your running shoes on."
What would motivation be like? To me it would be: "Ahhhh, it's time to run. Let's go!!!! Think how great it'll be after the first mile, when you are all warmed up. Look at the surf, the pretty sky. Think how great you'll feel at the end. Your body is a temple -- keep it functioning well by running."
I just :rotfl2: reading the previous paragraph, but that's what I'd like my brain to think. I want motivational/inspirational thinking and I want to know where to buy it!

My hardest times were when it was soooooo hot outside. It was a real chore and I had to keep telling myself that if you don't keep going you will have to start all over from the begining again. Was not going to happen!
But, today was not one of those days because it was in the low 60's and a nice breeze (a little strong once in a while) and I felt great. I did run a little bit in my 40 mins. I was suppose to do for 2.47 miles. Not setting the world on fire but if anyone told me I would be doing this at all this time last year I would have told them they were crazy. :silly:

Gail, I think you are doing awesome! Every time I feel l like I am not getting enough distance in, I also look back on last year. Mmmn, what was my distance last year? Uh, zero! :D
Lisa, I think we have to celebrate every success we have in life. I think really that is what life is all about. Celebration, we have so much to be thankful for. Every step we take, is a step toward a better self. That's how I look at it anyway. ;)
nono, what drives me is guilt also. I have always been guilt driven so that is no surprise there. I too wish I had motivation to drive me, but until then I'll be in the guiltmobile.
Carrie, hope you are feeling better soon, I hate getting that stuff. Really makes every thing I have to do a huge effort. :(

I agree with everyone that motivation is not what keeps me moving, putting one foot in front of the other! Nono's comments actually motivated me (LOL) to go look for quotes - I just love quotes because they can be so inspiring. So get ready, because I saved a huge number of quotes to a word document tonight and I am gonna use them here and at Sparkpeople :D For starters:
" Desire is the key to motivation, but it's the determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal, a commitment to excellence, that will enable you to attain the success you seek."
Mario Andretti
I ran this morning and added six more minutes to my continuous run for 26 minutes; I did the two miles in 25:50. Its all a mind game too, huh, nono?! This Saturday is my eight miler and I am actually getting a bit excited for it and the fear is fading a bit :w00t:

Lisa, I love quotes--like you couldn't tell that from my signature. I like Anon's quote of "Enjoy Life, there is plenty of time to be dead". I think a lot of people take their life for granted. I know I used to. Running has helped me so much with my attitude. It is true they say it's a emotional shot in the arm. :thumbsup2:

OK. Advice you didn't ask for...
Put your number on the front of you.
Don't line up at the front of the pack.
Don't line up at the back of the pack.
Smile for the cameras.
Try to go out slow.
When you realize you did not go out slow and your lungs want to burst, just slow down. You may not actually have to walk if you just slow down.
If you're wondering where to walk, try to do so through the water station(s). It's always a good idea to walk through them, and you won't impact runners around you.
Relax -- and HAVE FUN!!!!!!! :yahoo:

Well, I just signed up for a 5K in Oct. the weekend before we leave for Disney.:silly: It benefits the Animal Coalition of Delaware County.
nono, it is at Ridley Creek State Park. They also have a 1 mile walk that you can walk with your dog. I was thinking about doing that one but decided that I wanted to try the 5K instead.

Nono, I need all the advice I can get my hands on! I am doing it with my running partner, and I am happy to have her there tomorrow for sure. I know I won't be able to keep her pace, and I kept telling myself all day today "just keep right" "just keep right". :D My plan you ask? Just pretend, or try to pretend it's a normal running day. Start slow, concentrate on my breathing and if there is anything left in the tank at the end than "race" the last 1/2 mile or so. I am hoping I don't have to stop for water, as I am really trying to train my body to not require it for at least 3 miles. I don't drink when I run 3 milers, so hopefully I won't have to tomorrow. I will be on cloud nine if I get under 35:00. That's a long shot, but thought it would be fun to at least have something in my mind to shoot for.

I'm back, and best of all, I survived! And I am pleased to report I beat my goal, nonofficial time was 29:43. :) I about died at the end, when I could see the finish and knew I was so close to a sub 30. I can truly say it was the most physical effort I have ever put into anything my entire life, the last 1/10 of a mile. I knew I overran it, and I kinda cheated in that I was running with my running partner who was my pace rabbit. Did get a really cool North Face Tech shirt, and red beans and rice and Gumbo at the end. (I think I might like Armpit races, evidently that is the 2 food staples down there for post race eating) The race itself had about 500 people. It spread out nice, and there were a lot of kids too. Really cute to see them. All in all, it was a absolute blast, and I am officially 100% hooked! Sorry so pics to share, my better half was working. Just imagine me all pasty and my tongue hanging out at the finish. :D

Waiting to hear about your run, Rozzie :goodvibes:
I had a rough time this morning but I got my eight miles done. I started cramping in my toes at about 5.6 miles and it never got better. I prolly cramped about 25 different times till mile eight was done. :confused24: I take vitamins and I was drinking water all the way through the run - about 25 ounces, I guess. Maybe, I should take potassium supplements?? I haven't suffered that long during a run :blech:
On the plus side, I did not give up  and it wasn't two+ miles of unrelenting cramp, thank goodness. I can obviously see that I have work to do!!
Determination gives you the resolve to keep going in spite of the roadblocks that lay before you.

We were posting at the same time! I am so happy for you! :yahoo:My fave thing you shared is that you are 100% officially hooked! You are drinking the koolaid with us on running too :cheerleader::beer::w00t: Way to go on your PR - WOW!!!!!! :goodvibes:
Congratulations! And, fashion report please! What did you wear? Were you comfortable (until the last 10th anyways?).

Congratulations! And, fashion report please! What did you wear? Were you comfortable (until the last 10th anyways?).
I had on my black running skirt and black with white striped tank. I was very comfortable, and it was a perfect running morning--60s with Northern breeze off bay.
What did I learn?
Most important there is no way in hades that I can run that fast for my 13K coming up. I am going to have to be more disciplined in my pacing or I will die right there in front of G*D and Pluto.
That the people that look intimidating before the run, the ones that are running around in big circles and 0% body fat, well don't worry about them--you will never see them again. Well except when you the race turns and you see them running toward the finish and you are still on Mile 2.
The out of shape ego beer gut dads that blow by you during the first mile, well....you will see them again, and do say hello when you pass them.
that same hill you run up during your normal routine runs is 100% bigger when it's the hill to the finish line.
Next time, don't eat a bowl of red beans and rice, Gumbo, banana, and hot dog at the post race party. That just ain't a good combo. :blech:
Can you tell I'm wired? :D Thanks again friends, I thought of all of you this morning and there is no way I could have done it without your help and encouragement. :goodvibes:

I'll have to look into that. I know there is a half/full down here in Jan, and a 10K in November, but I have been disappointed in the lack of 10 milers/halfs down here. Maybe I haven't looked enough, but it seems they all require a hour or so of travel. Lots of 5Ks, but I really think if Alabama wants to improve their ranking on the most obese state--they gotta get some longer races! I bet there are quite a few though up in Lisaland. (4 hours north) That would rock if you came down, WOW! :thumbsup2:
I was thinking about you today, so glad you enjoyed your first official run. So when is your next one?
Maybe a 5K Oct 11, a 8K for sure on Oct 18 (isn't that the weekend of your race?) and then the TOT Oct 25. There is a really cool 5K next weekend that we are skipping. Next weekend is a LR of 6.5, and I really feel it's more important. We did run a extra mile after we drank some after the finish to get our 4 mile LR run in today. I just don't see me being able to crank out 3.5 after a 5K.

I do as well once it turns cold. I need layers on my rear end as apparently, I have millions of cold receptors back there among the fat!

I'm going out to dinner with my girlfriends from grade school tonight. We go the last Sunday of the month. I was at class with Maggie when my son called to ask about dinner (nothing like last minute) but since I already had plans we will do it next weekend. They are taking my DIL's father out for his birthday so we will celebrate together. No cool presents, but of course I haven't seen my son yet.
Happy Birthday Gail! (I don't post in birthday threads 'cause my post count is too high already!)

Glad you are feeling ok after your run. Did you try out your fudge?
While we were out yesterday we stopped at the Cracker Barrel for lunch and I picked up some fudge there. When we got home I cut it up and wrapped it and it is now in the freezer.

I have to find me some fudge! Any excuse I can get to have fudge...Our Cracker Barrel is close by, might have to make a stop. ;) So nono, how is the fudge doing on the runs? Staying frozen? :listen:
I only froze the second batch. First I left as is...pistachio is drier to start with, and that's working well. The chocolate coconut was messy and wet, and probably should have been frozen. The kids ate most of it. :D
I think I like it -- no super long run for me this week. Next weekend, I go 10 miles, so that will be a better test.

ROziie - OMG, you rock! I am proud and thrilled and just flying high reading about your race. Way to go!!!!! BTW, Dh and I have only done 2 5Ks, because we look even slower at that distance doing our marathon pace. One of my better ones, though, I did lastyear. We needed to do 8 that day, so we wnet to the race extra early, ran 4.5 and then did the 5k. I was shocked at how well we did at teh 5K. COngrats again!
Gail - I am thrileld that you signed up for a 5K. Way to go!!!
nono - Great pre-race words of wisdom!
Lisa - COngrats on teh 8 miler! Maybe you need supplements, but maybe you just had one of htose days. Maybe your body didn't like the shoes you wore the day before or you slept funy or who knows.... Sticking out on a run like that is a huge victory, though. WTG!
OMG, I am so proud of everyone here. This group is awesome!
Oh yeah, I did 60 min on Saturday. I was more tired that I would normally have been, which means it was good that I did not go 8, but I was pleased with how it went.
As long as we are sharing quotes, I have to share this bumper sticker I saw yesterday. "If ignorance is bliss, why aren't ther emore happy people in the world?" :rotfl2:Sorry, absolutely nothign to do with running.

I did decide to eat a couple of clif blocks on my run, maybe it wasn't enough since my workout was close to two hours long :scared07:

Got my 5 mi in last night. It's kind of hard adjusting to the ghost town and changing my routes to different areas. I should have had Renee's lighted up collar on last night, as it was truly dark when we returned. I had my reflective wrist band and reflective RoadID on my ankle, but she had nothing. :(

nono - Ugh, it's so hard getting used to more darkness. Not looking forward to it.
Well, I sort of ran last night. Got out and it was just a little sprinkly. Not too bad. The drops started to get bigger, but there is just under 1.5 miles that is mostly under tree cover. So, it was not too bad. Scott was haivng achilles issues the whole run, so he used teh 10 minute rule. I have missed so many rus lately, though, that I said I would go until I lose tree cover and decide from there. Well, I got out of cover adn it started to rain pretty hard. I took that as my sign. I ran about 20 seconds more to make it an even 15 min out and turned around. About 1/3 of the way back, the rain stopped. Ugh. I am just not dedicated enough to turn away form home after I have started towards it, though. Then, abou 2 tenths from my house, it started again. Was pretty hard when I crosesed the street to my drive. SO, I fugured I was justified. Of course, about 10 min later it stopped. 60 and raining, though is still a bit cold. My upper body was ok, but my legs were dead. I'm hoping it was just the cold. At least I got out, though. 31 min and 2.75 miles.
Scott can't work out tomnight (probably a good thing). I'm going to hit the aquatic center by myself. HAve not decided what I will do yet. Tempted to try the pool, but I swim so badly that company would be nice. Then again, I will miss another run, so I should prbably TM or try the indoor track. WHo knows. Way too many choices fro me. :-p

How cool - an indoor track, Carrie?? I sure would like access to one in bad weather; I bet it has good shock absorbency also
I think you did great considering the rain and missing partner in crime!! I wouldn't be able to turn around again either!! :rolleye11:
I did my speed interval run yesterday. I don't quite follow the MFM book regarding other workouts. I only do two workout runs (tues and thurs) and then my LR on Saturday. On mon, wed and fri, I do cross training :goodvibes: Works for me and less hard on my body.
Be safe out there in the dark, nono! I live in too big a city to run in the dark by myself :scared07:

Out of the choices, I would pick Belle too. I'm a big reader like Belle and at least she isn't a wimp!! :D Oh, I will sign up soon; we already have a studio at BCV :goodvibes:
Wow -- I don't remember having to pick a princess! Probably picked Aurora since I always feel Cinderella gets too much attention. Besides, the hilarity of Sleeping Beauty isn't easily replicated in other films (the fathers' scenes just kill me!) Are they giving me a medal based on that or something? Gosh I hope I chose right!
You know, I've been wondering about that 3x a week stuff. I was thinking if I get my mileage up to the 30 mpw thing, if I could just cut down to 3 10 mi runs a week and be done with it. I wouldn't cross train though. I'd be drinking the other days, most likely! :biggulp:

Well, I did my 40 mins. on Monday, Tuesday was Xtraining day and I usually go to Curves but I was busy running around in the morning and didn't get over before it closed for lunch. But, I did do a half an hour on my recumbent bike at home. Today was suppose to be my day of rest, but I was babysitting my grandson & granddaughter so I got quite a workout. I walked them over to the playground (about 5 blocks away) and they had themselves a great time and then we walked back. Played catch for a while with Matthew while Amanda was taking a nap. Although I had a great time with the kids I was glad to see Mom come and pick them up and now I am at work. Oh Joy!!!!
Oh, Lisa I picked Belle........actually forgot that we had to pick one so I checked my paper to see for sure.

Ya'll know I wanted a Mulan choice, but I am kinda glad she is not considered a princess. I think if her face was plastered everywhere I would lose my fascination with her. I picked Belle was for being a bookworm and a little more independent than the others. I do wish I could "make" a tech shirt with Mulan on it for the race. There is no way I could do a cotton Tee. :blech:
I also just run 3x a week. I really like this schedule, though I do slack sometimes on the XT. Not often, but sometimes. I love the runs, and now that the weather is gorgeous I just want to run everyday. Of course my body could never take that. Not now at least. I have been getting a little more aches and pains, but nothing that lasts a few more hours. I figure it's just related to my mileage increasing.
Carrie, you said what is exactly on my mind. In a way I'm kinda sad about never being "new" to long distance running again. Kinda like when you are in the middle of a good book that you don't want to end. It is just so much fun to have so many "firsts". Speaking of firsts, I have my longest yet this Sat, 6.5. It is so weird how much I am looking forward to it. Yep, this running stuff makes you a little psycho I think. ;)
Nono, I have been thinking of getting a RoadID. Do you like the ankle one? That is the one I have been thinking about getting.
Gail, your day just wore me out just reading about it. I usually have a 1 hour limit with my niece and nephew before I am attempting a return to sender action.
Lisa, sign up for the race! Don't dillydaddle!
Where is Laura? Oh Laaaaaaaaaaaura???? :listen:
Rozzie,
I love the Road ID ankle bracelet. Santa brought it to me a couple years ago.
For those of you who are 3 day-a-week-ers, I started out with 4 days a week, and then went to 7 over 14 (every other day over a 2 week period). This summer, I went to 5x a week. I couldn't believe how much less effort the whole thing felt. 5 on, 2 off was a great change up. I advocate that over time, you make changes to your schedule to keep your training/weightloss/whatever fresh. Not now, in the middle of training for something, but at one of those in between times.
So, I'm actually not kidding about switching at some point to 3 10s for awhile. I think it would be fun for 8-12 weeks. :)

I started with the 3 days a week when I began marathon training Aug 31. I agree with you nono, about the keeping it fresh idea. In order to continue to progress in fitness, we have to change it up. Our bodies need to be confused on a fairly regular basis. I have been at this for almost six years straight (about 6 days per week), except for a three week stint of a really bad knee flare. When I only had a recumbent bike, my workout got stale and my body did too. Before I got the treadmill, I added a mini trampoline, weights, exercise bands and a ball to mix it up :D
I bet with 30 miles per week, you will lean out a lot. I wish I could handle that many but I think it would hasten the demise of my knees.
Rozzie, you are so right, as is Carrie about the firsts being so exciting. I am already looking ahead and wondering how long I can continue to have all this fun!! The half marathon was a biggie for me as I am sure the marathon will be too. I guess that is why people turn to ultramarathoning and triathlons (Carrie) :goodvibes: to keep those firsts coming :thumbsup2:
None of us are really princess types so its no wonder that its difficult to pick one. I think I will stick with Belle too. I liked her courage and ability not to pass judgment too :)

Not to be a peacock, promise--but the official race results were posted. I gained 20 seconds! 29:22 was my posted time. It's a PR that I won't be able to crack for a long time I think. It was the perfect race, perfect weather, course was the actual area where I run on weekends, and I had my very own pace rabbit. It was fascinating to study the results and see as I climb in the age groups, I got even tougher competition. I loved the 70 yr old who ran a sub 27:00--now that is awesome!!!!! I just have fallen in love with competitive running, it really is all about you and your own time. I can't think of another sport that allows you the freedom to "run your own race". :goodvibes:

Silly ROzzie - We are so about celebrating each other's victories!!!!! That's just awesome!!! Congratulations! FYI - Trainig for a half with MfM, you only do 3 runs a week. WHen you get to the full plan, you do 4 runs/week ~every other week. Just so you know why the discussion's coming up.
nono - OMG, you will rock teh proncess if you get to 3 10s/week.
Laura?
Gail - SOunds liek lots of XT yesterday. Hope your week calms down and you can get your regular work outs in.
Lisa - Yes, tri's were a great way to mix things up adn make it new. I really did love those training plans.
OK, so I win dumb runner of teh year award. OK, so I had decided to do teh aquatic center and I was going to bike or swim. Then, I decided Ihad to run. Wel,, decided to do teh TM , not the 1/12 track. I was on for less than 2 minutes and wanted to die. I am so not looking forward to winter (which we almost seemed to have skipped fall and gone to). It was awful! After about 10 min, I looked outside. It wasn't raining. it was perfect weather for me. Ding! WTH was I doing on a TM when I oculd be outside???? Somehoe, when I decided to run, my brain did not backout of going to the aquatic center. Ugh. I was so mad at myself. Longest 45 min ever!
On the bright side, at least I got my member card and saw that the pool is pretty empty when I will be ther. Cool.

Lisa,
I'm jealous!
Today got 6 mi in. I woke up and thought to myself, "Why the heck do I do this?" I was not in the mood. But I did it, and felt great afterwards. I'm tired now, and just waiting to take the dog to the vet. Tick tock tick tock.

Attention Porncess runners.....I went on the site last night and there is an announcement that the race time has changed to 6:30.
Carrie....do they let you know when they put the course map on the site or do we just have to keep checking?

Gail - No idea when they will put up a map. They may e-mail those who have signed up and let us know. If you jus look at teh full marathon course and start it at teh race track, though, that will be the course.
Yay for an extra half hour sleep when we lose an hour that night.

Thanks Lisa........don't think I'm going to get the shirt made cause I don't think it's worth the $25.00 they want for it. I was thinking about getting some button pins at the craft store and putting it on them for our Team Peacock. Have to see if I can find a good peacock picture to put on there with it.

Okay, so with a 0630 start, what time is a good time be up and at the start? I'll be driving my own car, so no worries about transportation. Er, another question, where will parking be? I'll have the Escape and I bet we can squeeze all of us staying at OKW in there for whoever doesn't want to take the bus.
My LR is done for today-- 6.5 miles. Just doesn't seem right even typing it. It's just so hard to believe I ran that far! My knees did start talking to me at the end, I don't know how much more I could have done.

Have you tried any supplements? I know quite a few folks who've found the glucosomine (sp?) to help. My bones don't hurt, but my "hydrolic fluid" in my knees sure makes a lot of noise if I do stairs after a long run. I find that high quality fish oil makes a big difference in keeping me running smoothly. I think it's a combination of the anti-inflammatory properties, and just general lubing at work.
Lisa, I have a Garmin 201. Until it dies, no birthday gift for me! My birthday gift is my Nov. trip to WDW. My birthday's that week, as is Mr Nono's. :thumbsup2:

6.5 miles, that is great!!! You are going to be soooooooooo ready for the ToT race. I was thinking about not going out today since I didn't have a rest day this week but I did. Did three mile, didn't want to push it and then I went out with my son, DIL, DIL's parents and of course grandkids for my birthday dinner and DIL's father's birthday. I got a gift certificate for The Running Place. :yahoo: Yea, now I can get some stuff for the colder weather.
Roz, I don't have any idea about what time to get up and ready for the race or where to park. We'll have to wait for the Disney race experts to chime in on this one.

Way to go on 6.5 miles, Roz, you are ramping it up, girl! :yahoo: As far as when to get up, it depends on food and drink too...if you plan to eat early. Carrie picked me up at 4:20 I think, for the Minnie marathon but I believe our start time was 6am. She will probably remember better than me. I made coffee the night before and drank it cold. I ate a bowl of cereal too and I woke up about 45 minutes ahead of my ride.
Good advice from nono on supplements. I need to be doing fish oil again too, but then I taste it all day :blech:

Nono--First off, I love your advice! Actually that is what I did, just ignored it and then did dynamic stretching after it was over. :thumbsup2: No pain now. I do take fish oil twice a day, and was taking Glucosamine but had stopped for a while. Guess I'll be picking that back up. I really do believe fish oil is a wonder drug. Here I've been taking it for cardiac health and now learn that it can keep me lubed. Cool! I have also noticed my sciatica is barely noticeable now, I think the anti-inflam's in the fish oil also have helped ward that off. (knocks on wood quickly) Too cool on the birthdays in the same week, wish I could be there to help celebrate them. :biggulp:
Gail, best present ever! I would so love a gift certificate to a running store, I would be in heaven. :goodvibes:

I also feel my Garmin helps me keep my pace and motivates me to push it some more. I really can't imagine running without it now. Isn't the weather right now gorgeous? Gosh I wish all our weekends could be like this for training. I haven't used my heart strap yet either, going to save that for Dec when I start my 1/2 training. Thanks, Gail and Rozzie! :D
You are probably wise to wait a couple more months on the heart monitor - gives you more time to work on heart fitness too :goodvibes: My heart must beat weird too because since I have mitral valve prolapse, I have to have a treadmill stress test + EKG on the tm every other year. I'm not sure if you remember but my cardiologist sent me for a nuclear stress test in Jan 07 and then for an arteriogram before she was convinced that my heart really was okay. I have to do the stress test again this winter. You will definitely see great improvements in your resting heart rate if you take it in bed in the morning :thumbsup2:

It's not good near trees. Today, I was away (up in PA near Rt. 30 Gail) and it lost over a mile. Luckily, it was a trail marked by the 1/10s, so I knew exactly what I had done (and what I had run before I went under tree cover). Here's a link to the map of today:
http://radnorhistory.org/trailsigns/
And, there was a Wawa food market there so I could grab food at the end of the run. Fun stuff!
I can't believe you gals are talking rides and what to eat in March. I gotta get through my 10 miler tomorrow first! :D

Lisa, I remember all that happening. Gosh, that was in 07? Time sure does fly by. Wishing you continued good health on all your future tests. :thumbsup2:
T - 30 min until my 10 miler -- I just didn't have it to haul myself out of bed this morning and go. Late Sundays around here are just so nice in the post-season, so it's actually an optimal time to run. Mr Nono is out for a 3 miler -- when he's back, I'm out. I'm actually doing a 6 mi loop which will end back at the house and then I'll pick up Renee and do a southern loop around town with her for my final 4.
I've got to get more religious about bringing Renee back up to doing the long runs, but today would be unfair for her. So, this is my best compromise. :goodvibes:
Rozzie
10-05-2008, 06:48 PM
I bet Renee lives for those runs! :goodvibes: I promised a little dog here I'd start taking him when the weather cooled--I guess I need to keep my promises and get to crackin'.
Man, I'm dead. And Renee isn't. Should have taken her for the full 10! I'm feeling it in my legs and feet. Will enjoy a day off tomorrow! And am enjoying some wine tonight. Very unusual, but just felt like doing it tonight with the dinner we cooked.
Did 26 miles this week -- that's a lot for me. I'm trying to get up to 28 every other week with the other week being 21. Right now, my "other" is 20, so next week is 5 mi 4x. Kinda boring. I have to either rework my schedule or drive to some different starting points.
I do like how my clothes are fitting these days though. ;)

Way to go, nono and Renee!!!! That is an awesome run :yahoo: and I can certainly vouch for how nice a day's rest is after a long run. I rested today and I already feel rarin' to go again on my workouts :D
I'll never forget that good feeling when the cardio guy who performed the arteriogram said that my veins were 'flat-normal!" He could not find any evidence of plaque! :goodvibes: My cholesterol came back totally awesome too and I attribute these reports to running and working out diligently in general :thumbsup2:

Laura? Getting any training in?
ROzzie - I like to eb to teh start early adn soak in teh excitement and make sure i didn't forget anything. One of teh WISHers forgot her chip for the first half marathon, but at least she was early enough to be able to go back and get it. Isn't T&T parking by the race track? I bet you will park there. I like to get to teh race about 1.5 hours before start at WDW. SOme peopel hate that, some love it. YMMV.
OMG, I am so happy about my run Saturday. So glad I had a 9-miler before my half in 2 weeks. My bad half 2 weeks ago ws definitely due to being ill, as I felt so great Saturday. The last half had my confidence badly shaken. I ws affraid my tri trianing really had not had enough running in it, but I had a 10:45 pace for 9 mile, so teh bad half was definitly just because I was sick. Yay!!!! So, now I'm ready to take on my half in just under 2 weeks!

hmmpphhhh. I think taking Renee is developing my lung capacity. Nothing like running all out and having to yell, "Renee. Heel. No jump. No pull. Good no jump. Good no pull."
I'm wiped out today. Probably, it's just knowing I won't be drinking until the 1/2 marathon's over on 10/19. I'll be starting immediately afterwards at brunch! With my friend, who's going to meet me at the finish.

Well I am perplexed today. I could barely crank out 3 miles. Less than 2 days after doing 6.5? It's just so weird how mental I am on my running. If I have to do 5, I do 5 and hardly a step more. If I have to do 3, I do 3 and not able to do a step more. Anyone else struggle with this? :confused24:

OK on Peter. He probably listens better than Renee.
On the other stuff, yeah, your bod is probably tired, but that's no big deal. A lot of the old fogies from CoolRunning (when it was still in proper existence) swore by a short 2-3 miler the day after a long run to move out the lactic acid, etc. I find more often than not, I try to follow that advice, and it does seem to help.
But, since you mention mental, it may all be that. Since you have your Garmin now, ;), try running your route a little "off." Go out a few blocks further before turning around -- like 1.7 mi if you're on a 3 miler. Then when the Garmin clicks off to 3, and you aren't quite back, you can decide -- do I go for 3.25 or just walk it in? Either answer is OK. Now for me, I count those 1/4 miles and "give them back" if I need to later in the week. So sometimes, a 5 miler becomes a 4.75 and I walk in the last 1/4, 'cause I have a 1/4 mi in the bank from earlier in the week. And sometimes, I end up with an extra mile for the week 'cause I put four 1/4s in the bank. :thumbsup2:
Rozzie

Thanks guys for all the feedback. Nono I like your idea of "banking" mileage and so forth. I think I am going to try and start doing that.
Gail, I'll call again tonight and see if they will take it. I'll let you know what they say. :)
Weird coincidence of the last 30 years...
At my 8th grade reunion, at the end of the evening, I found out another classmate and I ran the same race. (Remember my smokin' 10K?) Here's a part of the email she sent me today:
I had so much fun at the reunion the other night and really enjoyed talking to you. The next day I was thinking about "stuff" and suddenly remembered something. During the race, 2 people running right behind me were talking...and one stated that they had just buried their father. (That had to be you) I remember thinking how sad that was ...and I also was thinking - how do these people have the energy to talk during a race!! Anyway, I looked the results back up and you finished about 20 seconds ahead of me....talk about a small world!!!!
For 30 years, we went our separate ways, and ended up with 5 finishers between us. So, now I say, I'm definitely not a smokin' runner. I'm just exactly where I should be among my peers. :)

Hey Lisa, I'm so hoping to find someone to buddy up with for the ToT. Not that I will mind running alone, but I think it will help calm my nerves for my first big race. A drawback to running with a partner is you get to a point where you get almost too dependent on the conversation and the pacing. Just think how much better off you are just relying on yourself and not having to adjust to being partnerless.

Well, I'll probably drop 2 lbs. and that does make me slightly faster! :D
It's also about hydration for me. I get really dried out from any alcohol, even the venerable beer, with all its water content. Most of my nagging type injuries all seem to miraculously go away when I'm hydrated properly (which is hard to do, since as a SAHM, I'm never allowed to actually go to the bathroom  ). So, not drinking is like my insurance policy.
I woke up from my nap with a side stitch. WTH?????? I thought I had to be doing something to get one!
Yeah, nap. This SAHM gig is a tough one! Going running at 5 pm for 5 mi.

Just back from 3 miles, a hard one too. Please for all that is good and decent in the world someone remind me food is fuel. The right food that is. Fried Chicken and Banana Pudding isn't. :blech: I haven't had fried chicken in forever, and well forgot my lunch for the first time ever and temptation got the best of me. Why hospitals even have "fried chicken day" is beyond me. Good for business? :confused24:
Fried chicken in the cafe is to insure new patients.:rotfl2:

Believe me ya'll, I aint' going down that road again. I have always been hard headed and got to learn things the hard way. What stinks is I've been really good with eating for a while now and it's always a hard fall off the wagon.
Cool Gail on the Garmin! Your last weekend Garminless. :D
Got my 5 in this morning...felt great! Four more 5 milers, a 4 miler, then 13.1 on Sunday, Oct. 19. I wrote out my race plan today and did my split times. Going for a 1:59:??. If I can control myself in the first 5 miles, I have a very good shot at this goal.
Given that I have never been able to control myself in the first 5 miles of any race, I may not have a very good shot at this goal.
Got new running shoes in the mail - the kind that are getting discontinued shortly....Nike Air Track Star. I'm looking for a couple pair to bridge me over while New Balance keeps working on their Chi running shoes. I got in the nasty black and pink ones, and just ordered the white and orange ones.

I hope you don't hold me to your high standards, Rozzie, especially at WDW, lol! I fall off the wagon fairly regularly  I kinda look at it as trying to eat clean at least 80-90% of the time

Oh you and I are on the same page. :) I don't diet anymore, I just changed my lifestyle. I always figure if 80% on what I put in is good, I am doing better than most of the population. I also don't believe in depriving myself of the foods I love. I just can't have them all the time. Like on Sat mornings after my LR's we go to the cafe and I have a big ole' breakfast. Grits, eggs, sausage, raisin toast and fruit. But throughout week I have whole grain bagel with FF cream cheese with OJ for breakfast. I actually decided today to start subbing the sausage for extra fruit, well next time I'll start that. ;) I am really though figuring out though before runs my body really needs the good stuff. Carbs and fruit, some protein and fiber. For the first time in my life, I think I may actually start "getting it". Life is meant to be lived, but it's a better life if we make more healthy choices. Like exercise, I just wish people could experience it once, that feeling you get when you are having a great workout. I think more people would do it.
Speaking of my LR, best one yet. I actually had to force myself to stop at 5 miles. I am now "tapering" for the TOT and it is killing me. My running buddies couldn't go today, so I dragged Scott out of bed with me. I got him to commit by telling about the post run breakfast. :D Anyway, he is in W8 of C25K (on TM) and he did great this morning for his first run outside since starting the program. Granted he only could half of my LR, but I was bursting at the seems with pride of him doing that. A month or two ago he went running with me and couldn't even do 1/4 of that. He has never been athletic and it is so much fun to see him getting into it. Granted he isn't quite as psycho ( no desire for races of any kind) like the rest of us, but I know he has to be healthier by justing getting out there and doing something.
Nono, like the shoe choices! I did get refitted for another pair, but didn't have my old shoes me and I got stuck with a pair I hate. Taking them back next week, and found my current running shoe on Zappo's for $10 cheaper, free shipping too. I think I may avoid that running store now that I have a model I like. Does that sound wise? I just don't want to start changing shoe's if the first pair is actually doing well.
OKay enough about me, how did everyone's LR's go this weekend? :listen:

Well, I didn't get out today and run cause I was at the grandkids birthday party. Although I was on my feet for 5 hours does that count for something. :rotfl2: Anyway, the kids had a great party and of course got lots of presents. Matthew will be 4 on Monday and Amanda will be 2 on Oct. 30th. And Roz, I also mentioned about having them come down next year in Oct. for the kids b-days and they are thinking about it. At least I didn't get a no. :fingerscrossed:

Gail, I know that would make you so happy to have them come down with you. Maybe you could get the THV? :goodvibes:
Just so everybody knows, my laptop is going in the shop Monday for G*D knows how long. The big computer has a wicked virus and is dead as a door nail. The laptop just keeps freezing up after so many minutes. I say all of that in case anyone wonders what happened to me, and Gail, you still got my cell, right? In case I am out of touch by the time the trip comes. Happy Running everyone! :)

Lisa, you have never met my ego. :rotfl2: I look at the garmin and say "8 min miles? Maybe I have 13 of them in me...this could be my day!!!!"
No long run for me this weekend...did 4.25 today -- should have been 5 but I was hung over, ate 18 oysters for dinner last night, and was running on the sandbar at low tide. There were lots of tourists enjoying the sunrise, and apparently oblivious to the low tide stink. I was about to hurl, so I quit and slunk off the sand. I don't mind puking on the sand, but when there's about 100 people out there, I get a little shy.
Oh forgot to mention, Lisa, last night was an asterisk night. That is, we had the babysitter call and say, "I can sit for 2 hours." So, my 2 weeks of sobriety before the race went out the window, and we checked out a bar in a resturant to which we've never been. I've noted the drinking on my running plan with the asterisk next to today's run. :p

nono - I cut the alcohol and caffeine out 2 wks before a full adn 1 week before a half. I usually give up decaf coffee too, but haven't started that yet this week. Too funny about your former classmante.
Gail - Is the Garmin in yet?????
OK, last week was baaadddd. Out of town for a day, which meant not home Monday night and dead when I got home Tuesday. Don't know what happened Wed. Neither of us felt great. Left Thursday after work fo a Friday wedding, back where I was for work Tuesday. Ugh. Ran.
Late night Friday. Had a couple drinks :O and did not get to bed until 2 am. :O :O Wanted to die Sat am, more due to overeating Fri.
Well, I mad emyself do my 6-miler. 10:53 pace. HOly cow, how did that happen?? It was a hilly course too! Pace was slower than my 9-miler, but I didn't hink I'd finish.
Porncess hills: There are a few little ones around Epcot adn MGM. There are 2 really tough ones, though. There are 2 over passes enroute to teh out and back after AK. ALso, teh ramp going up to the entrancce of MGM can be tough. Overall, pretty flat course, though.

Yep, it's your first race weekend!!!!!!!! Are you getting excited?? I am so excited for you. :)
Question for all: I can't make up my mind to do this 8K this weekend. On my training thing, I'm in my taper and should only do 3 miles. BUT it's a cool race, cool after party, and I really wanted the experience of a larger race with traffic and all. What if I walked some of it? Do you think I would be shooting myself in foot if I ran 4.8 miles weekend before ToT 13K? Be honest, I can take it...
Lisa, that rocks about your DH. Who knows, they might turn into bigger running nuts than we are!! :thumbsup2:

Honestly, I think a taper for anything less than a marathon is a bit ridiculous (says the girl who's running her normal mileage and then a 1/2m this weekend). Sure, lighten up a little in the schedule the week before if you want (I did blow off a 5 miler yesterday, which lightens my schedule). But, 4.8 is only 1.8 more than 3. If you are worried about total mileage, can you shave a mile off an earlier run in the week?
Another consideration: Can you control yourself and not press full out during the 8K? If you can run at a training/easy pace and not get swept up in running your heart out, then that's good. To run to exhaustion and then be beat all week leading to ToT -- that would be :goofy: .
Anyway, no gun from me. I think you should do it if you can answer the above questions reasonably well. :)

That looks like a very fun place to celebrate  What are your favorite eats and drinks there, nono?
Lisa,
I've only been to the A.C. one once before (for a "Girls/Boys Night Out" with my friend Frank ;) ). I have gone many times to the one in PHL from back in the day, and what's cool about the menu is some of their more fancy dishes really deliver.
Post race though, I'm thinking I'll probably plow through a cuban sandwich with a side of plantains and a couple of rum drinks! I plan on cooling out <insert smiley of dude lying on bench> on the boardwalk until I sober up and can drive home. :D My girlfriend is going with me, and she hasn't planned anything for the afternoon, so we should be good.
Having a post-race eating event will make me want to finish faster. Another reason to fear not being able to control myself!
Icing my leg presently - nagging left leg thing going on....also going to run around lunchtime, my least favorite time. Trying to be as uncomfortable in runs as possible this week so that Sun will feel great! :cheerleader:

Rozzie - I'm mostly with nono. However, I still think taper's important if it's your first half. I don't taper for halfs now, but if it was my first one, I would. For this one, I still think it will give you an edge, but doing your 8K, at an eaiser pace, should be fine.
Still debating on the camera for my race Saturday. ne wcourse, so I might. Not having it for tri's though has gotten me used to not having it bounc eon my hip. It's fine iwth the big belt I wear for the full, but for my little number belt, it can bonce and spin. Dirves me nuts. I'll definitely have some kind of report, though.

So, I may have missed this but how far is everyone driving from home to get to their race? I don't have any races on my schedule for 08 and I really want one. I did the Vulcan 10K last year but this year conflicts with a family birthday at DH's family - 1.5 hours away :(
I hunted around for races in Alabama last night and I found one on November 8 in Huntsville, which I believe is about 2 hrs north. Pick up is on Friday so I would have to get there in the afternoon before an 8am run in Sat morning. No time to waste either  as they said the course would be closed in three hours and the finish line would stay open to the three and half hour mark. I should be fine with that much time though. My training run for Nov 8 is 14 miles so that would work well. Hmm, what do y'all think? Won't it energize my training?

Lisa,
I will go anywhere for a race! :driver: Atlantic City is about 45-1 hr. I have to stop and pick up my friend, so that will add about 25 min to the commute. I think there's packet pick up on Sunday morning. Communication for this race is not the best.
Personally, I need races (about 3-4 a year) to keep me energized for running my full training schedule.

Lisa, what races do you see down here? All I can find is the First Light Marathon (Mobile) in Jan, and the Azalea Trail Run in March. Oh and the Spring Chase in March also in Fairhope. The latter 2 are 10K's. Everything else is a 5K or so. Oh wait, I think there was a half at Point Clear in December if you are interested. :) There are several races in Pcola and beyond that I know are in the spring, but it sure is nice when they are closer.
You know I'm really starting to think that for the year after the Porncess, I think I'm going to head to Hilton Head in Feb. They have a small half marathon there that would be really fun to run -- and to finally check out HHVs. Points are low, the weather won't be any worse than home, and it'll be a race in FEB!!!!

Mom.
Well she may have been beheaded by my sister this afternoon. Still waiting for the police to call me.... :scared07:
My mother has been haughty Mom for the last two visits, to the point where the kids notice and comment afterwards. (Well, S just avoids her, which isn't his way). If she doesn't come around shortly, I would bet she's got 1 year left. It seems to be a script people follow. Once they start saying, "I have no purpose..." which she's saying. Heck woman, you've never had a purpose! You just noticed???! (not entirely true, but she was largely so, and we'll leave it at that). And I personally don't believe "compass-less" people are useless. But I'm not there enough to argue the point with her and haughty Mom wouldn't listen anyways.
My sister, being 8 years older, saw my Mom change to haughty Mom, which is who I grew up with...and she's apparently mad as a a hatter about her return (hence the police comment above).
Sorry, probably way more than you wanted to hear -- I'm so hungry I could drive up your way and get a Stacky's hoagie if they'd be open when I got there! :)

Nono, I am sorry to hear about your mom. She is living with your sister now, right? Or did she go ahead and move into the ALF? It is really weird how people "disapper" after a spouse dies--especially if it was a long extended marriage. It does wear on you, the whole "I have no purpose" theme that is played out every minute of the day. My thoughts are with you. :hug1:
Well I'm going to have a chilly start also. High 40's. Think I might have to "invest" in this cool running jacket at Target I saw the other day. My old running jacket is this heavy cotton that doesn't breathe worth a hoot.

What is it with the love/hate relationship between mothers and daughters? It seems like everytime I talk to my mother (she's in Fla) we end up arguing. She's forgeting a lot and ever since my father died she is in a constant state of Oh Pity Me. She took care of him for a long time and she has worked most of her adult life and now that my dad isn't there anymore to boss around she does it to everyone else. Anyway, enough of that, so sorry your mom is not coping very well.
Just remember to pick up the hoagie on Sat. on your way back home. :eating:

Rozzie, I haven't had a chance to go look again, it just seemed like there more races down there than anywhere else. I googled running events + Alabama as a search and was able to look at quite a few different calendars for all over the state.
I am sorry to hear about the issues with your mom, nono. :( I guess I am lucky because my mom and I shared many of the same interests through the years and her main reason for living now is to watch grandbabies and greatgrandbabies grow up and to get to use as many years of her DVC as possible :rotfl2:
I just heard the news that we have a third greatgrandchild on the way. That makes me a great aunt for the third time :scared07:

Okay, trying not to freak out. I broke down and looked at the forecast for the ToT. Rain, rain, rain. :blech: All the days before it are dry and clear, and the days after are dry and clear. Sometimes I think I am on a Truman like show with my own audience. :silly: Hopefully accuweather is not accurate 8 days out!

Ok, just what weather are you looking at cause I have been checking both accuweather.com & weather.com and they don't call for rain, rain, rain. It did call for showers on Sunday.
I used my Garmin today, and love it. Just one question.... do any of you have a problem with sweating while wearing it? And if you do what have you done to help with the problem?

I am so happy you love your Garmin. It is addicting for sure. I don't really sweat with mine. Actually I think that is the one area that is not dripping wet when I am done. How weird is that?
ETA: Okay went and looked on TheWeatherChannel and it only showed only 20%. Mmmmnnn....

That's what it saw when I was looking at it too. It just changes from day to day and it's not going to rain on Sat. for my race now.:yahoo:
It was really humid this morning when I was out and I should have figured that I was going to sweat while I had it on because I do in the summer with my regular watch on also. I was thinking about getting a sports wristband and put that underneath it. :confused24:

It is NOT going to rain, Rozzie, besides, its too early to worry. It only rains in the afternoon at Disney usually, right
Gail, I bought wrist sweatbands to wear under mine. So far, I haven't needed it yet! I think it would solve the problem handily though

Ahhhh. Do they call off races down your way for rain? I ran in VA Beach with Hurricane Noel out in the ocean beside us. I don't think anyone in the megalopolis belt from VA - MASS would ever cancel a race without a hurricane directly over them. Come to think of it, I ran the Tim Kerr 7 miler a couple years back and I remember packet pick up in a tropical storm!

I remember reading in a couple TR's that last years race got real close to being scratched because of lightening in the area. I think that's the key, rain should be a go, lightening may be a whole other thing. To be honest, if it is lightening real bad, I won't run. It scares the crap out of me. There are always several deaths down here in the summers from strikes. Think I'll pass on the medal and live to run another day. ;)
Yeah, well lightening is a whole different thing! We have had a rare winter thunder/lightening storm, but once we clear the summer, it's something I don't even think about.
Is lightening a year 'round thing with rainstorms?
withdisneyspirit
10-17-2008, 07:09 AM
I would say in the South that yes, lightning is pretty much year round although it may not happen in every rainstorm.
I have planned to do my ten miler today and am wanting to avoid the worst of the rain here today

Sorry to have been MIA. LIfe..... Just busy, not too bad.
Just wanted ot pop in and tell everyone racing GOOD LUCK!!! That's Gail, nono, and ROzzie right? Have fun!!!!!!
I'm Sunday. I had just decided last night what to wear on Sunday and a huge cold front blew in overnight to mess with my plans!
Now I'm all mental about it. Got to also plan my post-race dressing as I won't be going home, so I need stuff for my hair, a huge box of baby wipes to "shower", post-race outfit, etc.etc.
Then there's the whole fuel issue. I think I'm going with 1 clif shot and 2 little pieces of fudge. And a container of coconut water so I can skip the water stations for the first hour. I've decided that the fuel is simply to keep me happy and zippy. And, since it isn't going to be hot, I'm totally questioning the need for the coconut water. But I have to take it 'cause if I don't, you know I'll be kicking myself later! :headbrickwall::headbrickwall::headbrickwall:
I love pre-race insanity.
Rozzie
10-17-2008, 03:51 PM
Nono, wow, a Half this weekend. Whoooeee. When was your last one? I know you are going to kick major arse. How cold is it expected to be? So what does the coconut water do in comparison with regular water?
My race is tomorrow morning. In a town I've never laid eyes on. There is this Harvest Festival going on with the race, and I just assumed there would be a booth with some alcohol available for the post race party. I mean, you say "party" and I just assume there will be some type of something there. Well, that's a negative ghost rider. Evidently this town is the most conservative town in the Bible Belt, and that folks says a heck of a lot. I did just pick up one of the wicked fabric running jackets at Target, I really did "need" one. ;) High 40s for me, the coolest running weather yet since I've been back running. Running skirt, tank, and new jacket. I am looking forward to possibly not sweating to death before the first mile marker.
Gail, so tomorrow is the big day. Got your outfit picked out? Taking any of your G2 with you tomorrow? I always freeze one and then have it real cold after my run. What is the temp supposed to be for you? You are going to do great, I can't wait to read all about it tomorrow night. Have a great time! :thumbsup2:
My last 1/2 was the Disney one in Jan. 2007. 45 degrees at 8:30 (start time) and 50 at 10:30 (predicted end time) are the guesstimates on temps. It'll be warm enough if the wind stays down but fall winds can easily reach 20 mph in a blink, so...
Anyway, my decision on gear is the following:
New Balance Gray running skirt
WDW 1/2 Marathon long sleeve tech shirt (ironic, eh?)
Nike Frees in electric blue with just over 100 mi on 'em
wool ski headband (black -- says Silver Mountain on it)
old gray gloves that have a couple fingers that poke through (figure I can throw them out along the way)
So the coconut water is an isotonic solution not made by man! :yahoo: Nature's gatorade, if you will. I'm just tinkering with the fueling and figure opening up little packages of peanut butter fudge and the clif shot will be better in the later stages of the race for a bit of mental distraction once I've settled down. I am hoping having the coconut water first will give me what I need as far as electrolytes and then I can pitch the sippy cup (hopefully to my cheering section of 1). I think race day jitters sometimes takes away a bit of my energy, so that's why I'm doing it.
Well, we're having ribs and fries tonight and steak and salad tomorrow night. :eating: Had pasta last night and for lunch today. I think I'm ready!!!

I going to wear one of my running skirts and I have a sleeveless shirt from NB. I'm taking my long sleeve shirt that I got with my gift certificate at the running shope just in case I need it. Since my race is at 1 pm I'm hoping that I won't need it, but like nono said the wind can pickup and change everything. According to weather.com at the time of my race it will be 54 degrees with the wind chill. And, of course I'm taking my G2 with me. I'm still debating on taking a clif block or some fudge.
Good luck tomorrow Roz and have fun.:cheerleader:

Ain't that the truth!!! Always a barrel of giggles. :) Nono you are always a inspiration on how to truly live a life.
I guess I am fortunate, even though my race temp is 49ish, no wind of any significance, and it's supposed to warm up to 76 in a hurry. That's why I'm just going with just the jacket I can tie at my waist. I was thinking of taking a cliff block or two myself just in case.
Nono and Gail, happy running! :cheerleader:

Hi all!! I hope you all have totally awesome runs!!! :cheerleader: I wish I could see pics of everyone after their race =)
I did my ten miler a day early because I have to spend all day tomorrow at a fall carnival for our church! I usually do my runs in the morning but it was heavy rain here this morning :boohoohoo: So, I got started at 1pm and it did still lightly rain on me for about twenty minutes! Even though I was slow as ever (not much under 14 min miles), I consistently ran as much as I walked :yahoo: Scary thing is that I have to do 12 miles next week!!! :scared07:

LR in the rain, and you still did great Lisa! :thumbsup2:
I'm back. 8K complete--50:48 was the unofficial time. I was happy with it, as I felt good the entire race. Probably has something to do with the weather, as it was picture perfect. I ditched my new running jacket at the last minute and just ran in my tank and skirt. It was probably low 50s at the start. I didn't push it all, and just treated it as a weekend LR, well okay, at 4.5 I kicked it up to the finish. I hope the last little sprint didn't mess me up for next weekend. I don't think it did, as I still felt good at the end. I do like the longer distance races, as it really taught me a little more about pacing. There were a lot of running teams there, even ran into a girl I used to work with that is about to qualify for Boston. The food was pizza and banana's, and the music was a guy blaring his circa 1983 boom box. Really not as many people as I thought there would be. The tshirt is huge and I'll convert it into a night shirt.
So that's my race, waiting on pins and needles to hear from Gail and nono for tomorrow. Go Team Peacock! :cheerleader:

Now for my race. It started about 15 mins. late and the weather was perfect. Nice and cool out and sunny. They had lots of snacks, juice boxes, apples, donuts, coffee,water,etc.........There were a lot of people there with their dogs and just doing the 1 mile walk. I didn't have Maggie with me because I was doing the 5K. Anyway I had fun but thought I was going to die. The race was a lot of hills and I was exhausted. My legs were just fine it was just catching my breath. Well, I walked most of it and finished last but I did finish under the pace that I need to maintain for the Porncess. And I am happy to say that for my first race ever I got a second place medal in my age group for women. :cheerleader: Only because there was only the two of us in the race. I'm just so excited that I actually did it and finished.
Here are few pics. The one of me I had to have Joe take at home. He was going to come over with Maggie for the end of the race but the other car's battery died.

It was soooo funny cause when I got done everyone was already over at the tables and I had to find the guy to give my tag too. Then I hit the ladysroom and came back over when he started to make the annoucements and sat down to have an apple juice. I almost fell over when he called my name for the women's over 50 group for second place. I was very shocked to say the least. I told Joe that if we aren't at WDW next year he is going to go and walk the mile with Maggie.:dog5:

Having a complete mental breakdown of what to wear tomorrow. Sooooo, here's what I decided. It's going to be about 18-20 mph winds from the N. Temps in the 40s. Low 40s. It was 70 here all week.
So, I'm now NOT wearing my Disney 1/2 shirt, but my slightly thicker, definitely sleeker all white NIke long sleeve shirt with a black Nike border skirt with thin tights under that. (If my rear gets cold, Momma's not gonna have a good race. Now Momma might not have a good race, but it won't be because of her freezing rear end!) I'm still wearing the skiing headband and old gloves.
AND, in a fit of total insanity, I took an old Penn State oversized sweatshirt that I paint frequently in and cut a flap out of the front of it so my race number will show. I also cut the next a lot bigger, so I can ditch the thing after the first couple miles (maybe after we turn out of the north wind?) I think Mr Nono is glad he won't be there tomorrow as it looks pretty odd...but I think it'll work! :wassat:

Holy freaking crap nono!!!!! That is FAAAAAAAAST! So when are you going to start trying for Boston???? :listen:
Congrats! :cheerleader:
Thanks Rozzie. I seem to be defying the McMillan calculator that says I can't run the same pace for short and long races. I don't think I'd qualify at this pace until I'm 50. Which is OK, as I can't imagine being on a course for 4 hrs. Maybe in 6 years, I'll be able to conceive of that!
No results yet. They had a marathon, 1/2, 10K, 5K, 2 mi walk and a kids run and it was all chips in a bucket. I don't think they moved 'em out until the marathon course closed. So, I wait! :badpc:
I'll give the report when I have the info, but I think today I became a real runner. Not that I was posing before, but I think I have matured into the real deal.

OK, I'll start the report (it's way too long! -- warning!!!). And, as I get my hand on the pics, I'll post those too.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. :D As I looked at my fall running schedule, I decided to run the Atlantic City Half Marathon as a training race and to drop a different 10 mi race off my schedule.
I poked around online and found out this marathon isn’t rated so great. I read the comments and can understand why it wouldn’t work for some. But, the only real negative to me, the crowds on the boardwalk, wouldn’t really be an issue for the half. Hmmmmm…this was starting to feel like a good decision.
My biggest concern approaching race day was that I go out and overdo it, and not keep control of myself. I diligently wrote my split times on my wrist at 5 a.m. the morning of the race.(Note to the makers of Sharpie -- I expect permanent to be permanent on all surfaces...on my skin it sure wasn't!) I was having coffee and a little bit of shredded wheat. I also noted on my wrist when I was to fuel. I don’t think my body really needs much fuel during a 13.1 mi. run, but since I am not hydrating and eating as I would if I were at home, I’m learning I do need a but of stuff while I’m racing.
Got dressed in my white Nike long sleeved shirt, black tights, black running skirt and flip flops. Brought along my Nike Frees, socks, black fleece headband, throwaway gloves, and the old sweatshirt with a flap cut out of the front to show my race number. I was annoyed that the weather was so darn cold,:( low 40s, after having been up to 84 F earlier in the week. I had no idea if I was going to be cold or hot, but I figured it best to keep my legs and head warmest. My core doesn’t seem to need the layers (weird, I know!)
Took off in the dark :driver: and picked up my cheering section of 1, and headed into A.C. Parked at Caesars for good luck, used their bathrooms, then headed to Boardwalk Hall for late packet pick up. Saw runners from around our town as soon as I walked in the door. We chit-chatted for a few minutes, and it turns out we were all running the half. Then I went to pick up my number. No signage so I got to stand in a couple lines before getting my stuff. (OK, signs would have been nice, but really they wanted us to pick up our packets yesterday…) We had to pin ribbons on our left shoulder to show which race we were running (marathon, half, 10K or 5K). This was simply for other runners to know what race you were in…
Got two compliments on my flapless sweatshirt. Look for this "look" to spread throughout cold races everywhere... :rotfl2:
To be continued....
Sorry -- workmen arrived. Got distracted. Read that any way you like. :D
OK, back to race day.
Most folks stayed inside until 5 min. before the start. I put my shoes and socks on and went outside with everyone else. We lined up on the boardwalk – marathoners and halfers heading north, while the 10K and 5K people headed south. Simultaneous gun was fun as we watched the folks sprint off the start heading south, :cheerleader:while the northbound folks slowly started our march into the wind.
Mile 1 was on the boards with a planned 10 min pace. I nailed it! Whew. A couple runners were moaning about the wind, and hopeful that when we turned for the short west-bound leg of our race, it was going to be better. Living on a similarly shaped island 30 miles south, I said, “It’s likely to be worse.” The one guy teasingly said, “Oh aren’t you Ms. Optimistic.” I smiled and said, “Unfortunately, mark my words.” A couple others agreed with me.
Few hundred yards later, we turned, ran down the off-ramp of the boardwalk and BAM – a wall of wind. People’s caps were flying off, folks were slowing to a crawl, and Ms. Optimistic just leaned into the wind and started chugging past a whole lot of runners. :p I figured any effort I’d expend on this less than a mile leg of the race would be given back with the tailwind coming right back down the same street in the other direction. It worked. At that point I picked up a guy who was doing well into the wind too – He had a Boardwalk Runners green t shirt on (they are the hosts of the race). After the turn, I ditched my sweatshirt. I followed Mr. Green Shirt back to the boards and all the way down the boards to mi. 7 at roughly an 8:20 pace. I had planned for 9 min miles, but I wasn’t working hard at all, and figured I’d just deposit some reserve time in the bank and give it back in the end. I drank a slightly diluted 12 oz. of coconut water during miles 3-7. Felt right.
I had miles 8 & 9 scheduled as my “rest” miles – slowing down my pace by :30. I slowed down for 1 mi to 8:45, and felt totally refreshed. Went through a water station and walked. Couldn’t run through it as it was too darn cold to spill any on me! But I had enough time “in the bank” to do so without getting mental. Shortly we were up on the boards and past mile 10. After my refresh mile, I was running around 8 min miles, and was still doing so after mile 10 but was getting a bit twingy in my sciatic area on one side and my ankle on the other. Doing the math, I was going to come in way beyond my wildest expectations, so I made myself slow down to a 10 min mile. Mostly. Occasionally, I would catch myself speeding up during the last 5K and would put the brakes on.
The sun came out then and my legs were melting in the tights. But my top felt great. The rest of the time, my top was a bit cool and my legs felt great, so I was dressed about as good as I could have been. Fuel for the second part of the race was a clif shot blok with caffeine at mi. 8, bit of peanut butter fudge at mi. 10 and bit of peanut butter fudge at mi 12. It seemed perfect. I could see the finish line and had some folks I met during the race catch up to me about ¼ mi out, and we all took off like shots together for the finish
They immediately shoved a medal and a baggie with a bagel and banana in one hand, and a bottle of water in another. My cheering section was taking pictures and she said I looked like I had just gone for a walk, not raced 13.1. I reminded her I didn’t race, but just laid down an official time during a training run. ;) I cleaned up in the public bathrooms on the boardwalk and we walked down to the Tropicana where we had lunch at the Cuban restaurant in there. :eating:
Overall stats: 6 out of 54, 2 of out 4 racers from my island, :yahoo: and 150 out of 426 overall.
I am most pleased that I kept my exact overall pace that I did at the 10K in September while running double the distance. And, I’m pleased that I generally kept my head and ran the race I had planned.
Other thing of note – seashore runners sure do like candy to fuel for races! I had one guy lamenting he was out of Pixie Sticks in the last 5K of the half, some of our island racers use Swedish Fish to fuel, and I had my fudge.
Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the great race report......and as I said in a prior post.....I knew you would have fun, you always do.
I have to say that all you Peacocks have kept me going since I started my walking. I really did enjoy my 5K on Sat. even if I was the last one to finish. No matter where we finish we are all winners.

Wow nono, I am very impressed with your organization on all your plans. You really knew exactly what you needed to do and when. My ultimate goal is to be that type of runner. To know my body and my needs that well. To have learned it all from trial and experience of my own long runs. I am very impressed indeed. :love30: So did you learn all this stuff on your own, from a book, or a mixture? Like where in heck did you learn about coconut water?
Gail, I think we all have our own journey in this running quest. My journey won't be like nono's, and vice versa. I know I won't ever qualify for Boston, and I probably won't ever have a sub 2 hour 1/2. I do have my own goals that are coming better into focus as I journey down this road. Like you, I know that it's the Peacocks here that have kept me on this path. I know for a fact I would have withered away some time ago without all of ya'll.
I do have some exciting news to share tonight. Scott has announced (trumpets blaring) he wants to run a 1/2 Marathon for his 38th bday. How convenient that his bday weeks falls right in line with the 2010 Jan 1/2 at WDW. Twisted my arm he did. ;)

Yes, everyone who attempts is a winner as far as I'm concerned.
However, you've done something most of us have yet to accomplish: place in your age group! :yahoo: So, pretty much, you are top Peacock.
