Found two local 5k's I'm interested in. Just have to make sure there is someone to watch the kids. Why is it so easy for DH to sign up for these things??? Oh yeah b/c he doesn't worry about these things :silly:

Whooeee Lisa and Rick!! :yahoo:
I was so hoping you got to post a RR so I would not spill the beans. I think it's awesome what you did in those type of circumstances. The apron alone would scare me to death with my hip! The afterparty race and food sounded yummy--and I love how it went to cancer research. As you know, I deal everyday with colon cancer at work. BUT there is good news, new treatments, and we have patients beating it everyday. Still its a tough road, I am glad your minister has the great support you will give him.
Gail, FINALLY--he will do a HM!!! What a cool race to do too. I bet it will be a gorgeous course. Look at you too, getting the old race calendar filled up. When does your program for USAF start?
Well I am on my 3rd day of a food diary myself. My sports nutritionist wanted to see a typical week for Scott and I. Well I have been self medicating this week with the news of my Dad, so it will be fun fun fun to turn in. Lots of Blue Moons, chocolate, Chickfila fries, etc. Luckily he is going to whip me into shape with his plan. He keeps telling me my times are going to drop once I get the first 10 lbs off. Whoohoo!
Jen, how do I donate?
Oh for those wondering, I texted MM and got a message back. She is still running, getting ready for her next HM. Her life is crazy busy but she said she would check in.
Stimpy, you can't crate kids, huh??

It starts in the middle of June. Then I have to start again for the Dec. Peacocks in Orlando race. Hopefully I'll be recouperated enough for the one in Jan. :viking::drunkard:

Lisa & Rick- congrats on the PR's!!!
Busy weekend here; communications support for the Cleveland MS Walk Saturday and I was diving in the SCUBA for Diabetes fundraiser yesterday. I'm a little beat, but glad I helped some good causes! Hope to get some exercise in today after work...
Speaking of work, I should get back to it. Catch everyone later!

Lisa - Huge congrats on teh PR!!! Tell RIck congrats too! So sorry about your pastor. Hope suregery went well and tehy got it all. Praying that they foudn it early. Both my dad and aunt are colon cnacer survivors. Supposedly, it's one of the most curable.:hug1:
Roz - Been praying for your dad too. Thanks for the update on MM!
What is it with Cancer lately??? My cousin is getting chemo tratment 3 of 8 for inflammatory breast cancer today. SHe is way too young for this and has a very yucky road ahead of her. :( Still, a yucky road and life is better than the alternative.
Been doing well with work outs. Did a half Saturday,as some of you saw. No PR, but times are finally improving again. Yay!!!
Fly out for my quick WDW trip Friday am. (COming home Monday nigth and spending 1st night with a cousin in West Palm) Scott's first F&G. WOo hoo! Plus, there's no race! :yahoo:Love racing, but it will be nice to have a non-race trip.
Signed up for my first tri of the season last night. It'll be an olympic on 6/27. We are doing so much better than last year already. Yay!
Miss everyone! :hug1:

Thks for checking in Carrie! Whoohooo on the Tri Season coming up. All your hard work is going to pay off!! :thumbsup2: Congrats on the HM too, you got way more energy than me!
Did my first tough hill repeat workout tonight of my new program. Boy my legs feel like Jelly. Tomorrow is my first official XT day. Going to do 30 min on Ellipitical, hour yoga class, than strength and core exercises. Somehow it seems easier to just run 4 miles. I know though my body needs all this extra work. :fingerscrossed:

Somehow it seems easier to just run 4 miles.
Yikes, i should say so! I only got in ~1.5 miles yesterday, including warm-up and cool down walking... Life conspired against me and by the time I finally got home, let the dog out (twice; DW wasn't home yet) and got on the road to run I just didn't have enough time before my ham radio net started to do more! :silly: At least I got that much in though. :thumbsup2: Today's goal: 30 minute walk with coworker starting in a few minutes + 30 min. elliptical after work. Then tomorrow morning: weights (first time in like 3 weeks! :scared07:) + 15 min. 'mill. :fingerscrossed: I get at least most of that done!!!

Currently it's 40 degrees outside, and that's under by 45 degree training limit I came up with to avoid Asthma flare-ups, sooo, I'm heading upstairs momentarily to hop on the elliptical for 60 min. instead of an hourish run outside... :oweye: At least I'll get some cardio time in and burn a few calories. :D On a completely off topic note, we are going to see Peter Pan the musical tonight at a high school a few cities over; hope we like it. Did you tell him USAF was a very fast flat HM course??? He'll have his sub 2 hour easy peasy. :thumbsup2:
Slowly getting consistent with my running again. Post-big-race, I always get guilty about what wasn't getting done while running was top priority, that I put running on the bottom of the to do list. So, it rarely gets done. Getting out of that now, as I managed to run 2 days in a row -- 3 yesterday and another 6 mi today. Shakin' out the cobwebs!

Yes and No. Nothing like I was doing with Jon--with him I felt dead and hated running at times. No recovery. But this I feel I am doing more quality than quantity. The strength exercises kill me, which just goes to show how much I needed them. Scott's times are dropping too, our base runs are faster than what we used to do our recovery runs in. We feel refreshed at end of runs and are hungry for more. Then again, we are only in 3rd week. We'll see how I feel in July. :fingerscrossed:

I'm all set to re-start up today! :cheerleader: Got my workout clothes on, just waiting for the iTouch to finish charging with the C25K app on it & the bus stop crowd to disperse so I don't look too ridiculous walking/jogging around the neighborhood.
And just a side note, we were able to sneak one last SWW in this year before DS goes to Middle School. We're staying at SSR and I'm really nervous! We're bringing another family with us and this is their first trip. I do have a waitlist for BWV for a 2BR but since it's 30 days now, I doubt it will come through.

Yesterday became a rest day for me, but I probably needed it since I don't "schedule" them intentionally, knowing fate sometimes 'strongly pushes' me into them! ;) Just got back to my desk from my twice weekly 30 min. walk w/ office friend. My plan is to go out for a run tonight once I get home ([~3.25 miles total doing 3 min running then 1 min walking] + a 2 min. walk warm up and cool down walking until heart rate settles to <= 110 BPM). DW plans to do a C25K workout tonight on the 'mill; we plan to push each other to actually do them! :rotfl2:

Wait a sec; SWW = Star Wars Weekends in that context, right? I thought it was some kind of running abbreviation I couldn't place!!! :rotfl2:
Went out and did my run :D, but DW bailed on the 'mill. Maybe I'll push her harder on Saturday; she had a lousy afternoon today so I didn't think tonight was the right time to try to "motivate". Sorry DG, I knew you had asked and I thought I put the answer to your question in my post. Does it still count if I thought I did? ;) Amazingly enough we won't spend too much time at SWW this year. Will probably catch the parade (which is super cool). We have spent waaaay over our budget on SWW collectibles over the years.
Well Scott and I got our diets yesterday. We start Monday. Our sports nutritionist sat down with us for over a hour going over everything. We failed the 7 day diet diary--bad when the guy actually laughs out loud at some of our meals. I had never done a food diary before, man what a eye opener. My goal/race weight is 130 by USAF. Scott I think is 170. That is 20 lbs for both of us. After race I would probably like to stay at 135 for a buffer.
Running is harder this week, the hill repeats were super tough. Miles in the bank though, miles in the bank. :)

Oh, I never did all of them. I found my fitness/recovery in my tendons and fascia meant I was whatever the expected number was -2.
I can't believe you are training already for AFM. His programs are long, aren't they? I'm just piddlin' around with running right now, and taking my (now) annual May break while at WDW. Then, I kinda of have my own plan moving to AFM. I plan to pick up Matt's plan again in between AFM and the Philadelphia Marathon. That's my target for this fall. It's a couple weeks before the half in FL. :)

I know I have been totally MIA since the Princess. Things are crazy and amazing and completely upside down. I just wanted to check in on the eve of my second half tomorrow. Physically I'm feeling really good about it. But they are predicting severe weather for tomorrow (I'm hoping the race can squeeze in between storms) so who knows what it will be like.

We'll be there the 1st weekend 5/20-5/24. I'm only reluctant about SSR b/c we have 4 kids with us. I wouldn't mind if it was all adults. Hate having to rely on buses with them but we'll make do.
Anyway! Apparently I have to start the "Almost dead to 5K" program. I only made it through about 10 minutes of the C25K before turning it off and just walking at mod pace for 45 minutes instead. I'm going to up my walking for a week or so and try the C25k again then.

OK, I am not proud of Stimpy. Do you know how freakin' beautiful LI is this time of year???!? Oh yeah, I'd like to slow down and smell the roses too...but I don't live on LI where there's a dozen rose bushes every other 1/10 of a mile! It truly is a magical place in the spring!
Oh, and for those reading along, a big ;) that I'm not seriously harping on Stimpy...just jealous of her environment for a couple weeks. :goodvibes:

Not running, not walking, not exercising except for watching 20 inches of snow that I'm not shoveling. Wait...it's melting. But since we are speaking of toenails.....Both mine fell off a few months ago. One is back just fine altho the black underneath never goes away. The other concerns me. Its about halfway back, but from the side view, it just looks wrong...as if it will have to grow into the skin insteadd of over the skin. And how the heck am I gonna get a pedicure for upcoming trip? Can they glue a fake nail on there? :D

Whoooeeee Gail G-son!! What a amazing time for such a little guy. I think we got some amazing talent pinned up in him. :thumbsup2:
As for toenail questions, if it's black, it's dead. Either it will fall off, or be pushed off my new nail. I have two toenails that I think forever screwed. Jen, Lisa is correct-you might need new shoes if it's the big toes getting black. They are banging the front of your shoe too much. I wear a 9.5 everyday shoe, but run in a 10.5. Works for me, my big toes do alright, but got the 2 wounded veterans are a result of a gait issue I believe and how I am landing. CB, I do need a pedicure in the most sad way, did not have one all last summer because of toenail issues. I was wondering if I could get a discount since I only have 8 toes that can be "pedicured". ;)
WTG for Jen and Stimpy for starting the C25K. I am a proud graduate of the program. Next month will mark my 2 year anniversary for starting the program.
I am just so happy to have running right now. It really is cheaper than therapy. My mom sold her house in Villages and is moving home. Or did I already share that on here? I am running in circles these days. Blah.

Just got back in from a run a few minutes ago. Rained the whole time! But, I figured, what if it rains for the AFH? Not gonna' bail then... When I got back in the house it was 55 degrees, 60% humidity, but still raining. Seems like that should mean 100% to me! :silly: Anyhow, after my warm up I ran 3 min walked 1, and did 4.15 miles that way at 10:27 average pace. I'm fairly happy with that. About 233.2 pounds this morning IIRC, yesterday was 232.2 I think- both quite kewl- nice to be going in the right direction again! After what I plan for dinner :eating: (Pizza [scratch made whole wheat crust, 2% milk cheese, turkey peperoni - so a relatively healthy pizza!] w/ tossed salad) I'll be at 1,662 calories for the day, and Garmin says I burned 752 of those during my warmup (2 min walk), main run/walk, and cool down (SLOW ~3 min. walk). :D
Watching for a report from MM; for now I'm gonna' get out of my soaked T-shirt and into the shower!

I had a really good half yesterday. 2:42 was my time and I ran the whole way. So I shaved off about six or six and a half minutes from the Princess. I started feeling it in my knee about half way through which I attribute to a difference in surfaces and course as I've not really had any problems in the last month. Anyway I kept running and even had a fabulous sprint to the finish. I really, really enjoy running this distance. I also appreciate Disney's level of organization more after this race.
Best wishes to DG and athenna in their training. Sorry that I haven't gone back any farther to know what's going on with everyone else.

I am so jealous of all of you! I'm lucky if I get out once a week right now! And even so I'm only able to run about 2.75 miles because my son doesn't like being in his jogging stroller! Good luck to every one's training. I'm thinking after #2 (which isn't even in the works right now) I'll be able to plan running Disney! For now I'll live through you all!

Kat, 2.75miles is a heckuva lot further than I can run! bummer son doesn't like the jogging stroller...wonder why?
So I'm posting here because many of you fly for marathon weekends and I'm thinking you may take only carry on. I usually fly SWA and so don't worry about baggage fees til this trip...one way on frontier.
SO: my normal carry on is teeny; I also have a bag that is 1/2inch wider and longer than size limits dictate. Should I risk it as a carryon or would the overhead bins be too little for that extra 1/2 inch (well, honestly x 2) ?

I ate some fruit and a pickle pop before bed last night, so I ended up @ 1708 calories. Still not bad at all; my self-imposed diet I used to drop ~85 two years ago (before my 35 # backslide) had me at 1900 per day.
Hit the pool and got my 2 lengths + 30 min of laps in; starting the calendar week off well! :) It should be 54 or 53 degrees and rainy tomorrow morning before work, soooo, I think I'm gonna' try and get to bed at a reasonable time and get out and run outside in it (or at a minimum hop on the elliptical for 30 min). Be my first time running outside BEFORE work in a LONG time IIRC. Now we just need to see if I stick to it or not! :p

Running is cheaper than therapy : yeah I have that saying on a coffee mug and a singlet. Given what I do for a living, I enjoy the double entendre.
Speaking of making a living, I still don't have a job for July. I'm taking my huge exam Monday (and wonder how much more I needed to study), will be on vacation the middle of May (with my mother!), and will be in Tanzania from May 30 - June 23 (for which I have only raised about a quarter of the $4000 I need), only to come back to the country to have less than a week to move out. I find it strange and exciting that I'm not freaking out about any of it. I'm actually excited about the prospect of crashing at my sisters for a bit. It's a very new place for me to be mentally.
Sorry to hear about everyone's stresses. Sending out well wishes to everyone.
If you want to see some really bad pictures, they are finally up for the Derby festival minimarathon. The company must have been cheap because they sure didn't know what the were doing. One guy was actually standing in the middle of the road right at the end of a water stop.

DG, my dad is doing okay. He was supposed to come home yesterday. I never got a chance to call before it was too late and was afraid to wake him up in case he was resting. The good news (and I am taking all I can get) is that he has not touched a cigarette since he was diagnosed March 28. I just wish he had quit about 30 years ago. He has had lots of health problems over the years--actually it is one of the main reasons I picked up running. He has a extensive cardiac hx and I knew I had to make changes in my life to avoid that path. Especially since my moms Dad dropped dead from a heart attack in early 40s. I got double the FUN!
Jen, I agree with everyone else. I also try to avoid meds at all costs. Sounds like you only did what you could do without losing your mind. How is the travel agent thing? Funny, while I was out running today I was wondering if anyone on the team would mind if I got a Team logoed shirt printed up for DW (for the Aug. 5k we entered) despite the fact that she isn't on the boards! :rotfl2: Am I correct in inferring that'd be OK?
...
Glad your dad is doing OK- my family has lots of hereditary things on both sides of my biological tree, so I can relate to wake up calls leading to a personal change!
...
I've been doing green tea darn close to daily and I certainly enjoy it; rarely do coffee. Hate the taste black, non-dairy creamer upsets my stomach, and a nice latte style 1/3 of the cup with milk or half & half leads to more calories than I'd care to waste on a beverage! ;)
-----------
On the running front, my Garmin wouldn't turn on today and on the dock it wouldn't say it was charging either... :boohoohoo: I think the battery may have gone south on me. DW found that it should be about $80 for a full factory overall; probably gonna' do so. In the meantime, I intend to order a new one off Amazon this weekend (Now just $148.25 for a 305 w/ free shipping!) DW has been thinking about getting a Garmin, so we'll probably refurb my old one then she can take it for a spin once it's good as new. :thumbsup2:
Ironically, I was playing on http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ this morning doing some course planning, so I had my route distances pre-computed so losing my beloved running toy wasn't crippling to me. I did ~4.5244 miles in 47:54.05, so I averaged 10:35 pace. Not too bad for me; I was running 3 min then walk 1 during it as has become my standard of late. Not sure if/when I'll change that.
Part of me is considering doing that 75% running for the Air Force Half and just keep working my Saturday miliage up between now and then; add a mile one week (do 5.5 on 5/8/10), drop back one the next (4.5 on 5/15), then up 2 after that (so 6.5 on 5/22) and repeat that pattern until I reach 13.5 on 8/28/2010, then taper back down for the two weeks before the race. I plan to bounce my exercise plans off my dad next time I see him (May 16th to take my mom out for a belated Mother's Day dinner is currently scheduled) and see what he things of that idea... :fingerscrossed: it isn't TOO freaky for me and I don't get blown off for too much cross training or not running enough, etc.

Gail tell him not to be so hard on himself. Humidity is brutal to run in, as you know it's like putting a sweater over your lungs. Especially with longer distances. It's something you have to run in all the time to get accumulated to. I about DIED last night and just did 4 miles. :blech: It takes about 8 weeks of summer running before I get a decent gas exchange it seems.

Thanks Roz...he's fine with his time...he's a smart runner...makes sure he finishes without getting sick or having injuries.

Son's chip time for the Broad Street Run (10 miler) was 1:38:35....was just talking to him and he said that he had to walk a couple of times because of the humidity. He said the sun came out just in time for the race.
Stitch....hope your DW enjoyed the race.
Well, goal #1 was to finish. Goal #2 was to finish in under 2 hours.
Chip time was about 1:54 so she's really really psyched.
We are all very proud of her for sure. And you're right, the heat and humidity was rough.
She sure is thinking about the 1/2 in WDW now, but it just doesn't mesh with school schedules. Maybe in 7 years ;)

Are several of you still planning on doing the OUC half in December? See, a friend of mine from work (who, thanks to my high praise, I'm sure, joined the DVC when she went to WDW last January) is planning her first trip as a member while the Christmas decorations are up and has asked me to go along with her.
Now, I am looking at doing my first marathon between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and had the crazy idea (if I can get away from work--which means I have to have a job) to run the Space Coast marathon Nov 28. My first choice actually was (and still is, I think) the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville Dec 11. But the Space Coast provides a pre-race meal, a post-race breakfast, and a better medal ;) for just about $30 more. I think the course for the Rocket City looks more runner friendly, but I thought that the Space Coast would give me an excuse to come down and see you all.
Of course, loving the half as much as I do, I don't know that I would be able to keep myself from running it! I think if I were doing the Space Coast half instead of the full, I could do another half 6 days later. But never having done a full, I'm not sure how my body will protest after. On the flip side, if I did the Rocket City, I think my taper run for that day is an 8-miler, and I'm not sure I should run a race the week before. I guess I could always just do the 5K, but where's the fun in that?
Anyway, we have a ressie at BWV for 11/28-12/5 in case it works out. When I get back from Africa, I plan on starting my training for the full. I'm still planning on the DLR 1/2 in September, and the WDW 5K and 1/2 in January.

Well MM, I have to be selfish. You should come do the OUC with all of us! ;) Seriously I think it's going to be a great race. I have also heard some super good things about Space Coast. (incredible course, unique medal, friendly organized staff) That's on our list too. I think you should be able to trot the OUC a week after. Scott and I will probably be doing Rocket City 2011--we can all meet up? Oh and if you want to redo the Derby, we have it penciled in next May. What did you think about the full course, overhear any reviews? :listen:
Sure hope you can join us in Dec for the race. :fingerscrossed: :fingerscrossed: ETA: I must have missed the commitment to the Donald, but yahhhooo! Party at the THV, we are going to have nice fun group in Jan too!!!!

Yes, I was one soggy, dead piggy Sunday. I did have fun, though, and it is beautiful there. Just wild. 4 second flash-to-bang time 15 min before the start. :scared07: Taht was the last flash, though, so teh race went on ok. jsut wet. verty wet. Hard until abotu the mile mark, tehn on and off, tehn pourd from about mile 10 to 11. The hills were deadly, but lead to such nice views. Saw some Tag friends at teh expo and stayed with some WISHers I've "trained with" since 2005 when I began my journey. Very fun! Thansk for thinking of me. I am happy with how I did, all things considered. My quads may never be the saem, though. ;)

Stimpy - I'm at AKV from 5/16-5/22.
Roz - I didn't speak with anyone who ran the full but I did read reviews on the marathon guide website and they seemed to match with my impressions. First you'll have two major sections of hills-the third, fourth, and fifth miles and the 18th and 19th miles. The first almost 11 miles of the course are run with the half, then the full joins back for the last mile or two. By this time the half runners left on the course are moving pretty slowly but depending on your time the crowd May still be pretty thick. By far there are more half runners than full (11,000 vs 1,500).
I run on the roads in Louisville but the ones for the course were much more cambered than I'm used to. But I think I notice more because of my ITB.
Okay so that's a lot of negative. I had fun running but I didn't have to stay in a hotel. It was nice for a local race but I don't think I would drive any distance to do it. This was my first non Disney big race so my comparative standard is skewed. It certainly wasn't as well organized. I felt water stops were too few and haphazardly managed (But after the RFTT I am very focused on dehydration). There were no energy gels provided for the half or full. I pack my own water and gels but reading other race websites I know other races provide them.
There was beer at the finish!
there are spots of good local crowd support. And you get to run through the infield at Churchill Downs.
Like I said I did enjoy the race but for something so big it felt very local. It's not that expensive so if it's on your list I would do it. Since I'm moving away I don't think I'll do it again.
Now a race for bourbon - I would do that in a minute!

MM, thanks for the review. Hopefully we will be able to put it on our calendar for this year. It would take care of the state of Kentucky off our 50 state pipe dream goal, plus I have always wanted to take a few days and visit all the horse farms up there. Horse nut that I am. :)
Well Mr Roz and I are officially down 6 lbs each since our initial weigh. I wish I was down 15 lbs, but am happy and content that I am finally going in other direction. More importantly my nutrition is better, I feel less bloated and I have more energy on my runs. Crazy, as I really thought I needed the 4,000 grams of carbs I was eating a day to run. :silly: I still am having a good supply of complex carbs, but also a lot more protein. No sugar, and gasp no beer yet. Even though I am allowed beer on my cheat day I have not had the desire yet. HOWEVER, taking mother to brunch Sunday and I plan to lube up with bloody mary's for that. ;)
I can't say enough how much better I feel. The yoga is doing amazing things. :thumbsup2:

Mmmmmmmmm, Bloody Mary's... :biggulp: Actually, I usually prefer just drinking the mix @ home as a Virgin Mary, but sometimes when I'm out I'll go for one (occasionally I get REALLY wild and have 2) "Bloody Mary, extra olives, Absolute Peppar if you have it". :D

Ran/walked 5.30 miles today. Kinda' cool (51ish degrees) and WINDY, but after 15 or 20 minutes my hands started feeling good and I was OK. Rained on and off. Averaged 10:46 pace. I weighed 227.8 this morning! :goodvibes: So, like the Rozes I'm on the right track there. :thumbsup2:
DW & I are going to see Music Man in about two hours at our city's community theater; my friend from work is (that I usually walk with twice a week and who also is a Disney fan) is meeting us there and bring one of his sons. Should be fun!

DG, you are doing great with the running! :thumbsup2:
Jen, I rememember a lot of days just being exhausted on that program. It takes a loooong time to build up a base of running. The way you are doing is the right way to do it. Remember to listen to your body, but don't let the minor aches and pains play too much with you mentally. I think that is the hardest part about exercising, when to ignore the minor stuff--and when is the minor pain the start of something bigger. Still working on all that myself. Hang in there, you are doing great!! When do you start your new job?
Nono, I wish I could snag the bedroom. Dern! :oweye:
Well all week we have been getting up @ 0330 to run. Really, it's just a hour earlier than when I usually have to get up. Unlike last year when we tried this, I am liking the change. Love having the afternoons and evenings off for housework, errands, or long nap. It is warm here now, mid 80s. What IS helping is our refusal to turn on our AC. We are trying to hold out till June 1. By living in the heat at home, it is helping us adjust quicker to the humidity when we run. Plus saving energy costs and reducing carbon footprint. It's not that bad now....I do have weak moments when I want AC, but luckily Mr Roz is on board with the plan and sways me back. ;)

Anyone know where to run at AKL?
Sadly no- my parents didn't find any place they liked the one time they stayed there (Feb. 2009?), BUT they have 3 night stays in AKV-Jambo booked for June and Dec, so I'm sure they'll explore and find something. Doesn't help ya' for tomorrow though I'm afraid...

Got in from a good 'run' a few minutes ago; ran 3 min walked 1 per my normal intervals of late, and got in my 3rd longed distance ever! :D After deleting my warm up and cool down walking, I had 6.07 miles @ 10:37 average pace. :thumbsup2: On top of that, scale said 223.4 # in the morning - lowest I've been in quite a few MONTHS. :goodvibes:
Nice to have that before some less healthy eating. I'll digress to food for the weekend: "Game Night" tonight so I'll down a bunch of high salt/sugar/fat snacks & Chinese tomorrow w/ family {celebrate mother's day late to avoid crowds}. It's family favorite a few miles from my parent's house that I grew up easting eating at regularly (last 25+ years?) :eating:. They have the BEST "Hong Kong Chicken", "Terriaki Sticks", and pork fried rice! Unfortunately, they will be relocating at the end of the month- this will be our last time eating in the current dining room... However, a lot of the time we get carry-out from there- probably 50/50 chance whenever we visit my mom and dad! :rotfl2: Hopefully their new location won't be two far away; they haven't announced where it is yet or when they'll re-open. Whenever we visit my mom and dad there is roughly a 50% chance we'll get food from there! :rotfl2: Anyway, I love Oriental food, but it often it makes my weight spike (Probably retaining water?) for a day or two. No counting calories for either, but I'm trying to be reasonable for breakfast & lunch before both. I find if I don't take an occasional free day, it's a LOT harder to stick to a healthy diet. Is that good? No, probably not- but it seems to work reasonably well for this Geek as long as I keep it occassional and exercise regularly! :silly:

Just popping infor a visit and to read back posts...nothing to contribute as I'm not doing anything. Trip to the cardiologist (new one, not so into EP ablations!) said I'd better watch my bp....ordered a monitor. I used to have such low bp, but a fib has a tendency to raise it in general (tho your bp usually goes down during an episode because of all the inefficient pulses). I also have to get rid of all this weight...I feel like I'm carrying another person around my middle, and weigh more now than when I WAS carrying another person (a little one) around my middle! Walking a couple miles a day on the treadmill does essentially nothing for me or my middle or my bp, so I'm going to have to do something to PUMP UP THE BEAT. Tennis could start soon except for the foot of snow on the ground . (Yes, I'm bitter)
My recent trip to Disney (to buy a mouse house) showed me that I can no longer do commando park days....4 hours and I was TIRED. I'm getting......dare I say it??????.................OLD. Crap. But hey, my new role model is BaBa Walters....she looks AWESOME for 80!!!!!!!

Just stopping by to say hi:) Sorry, I wasnt online for a few days.
Yeah, I'm gonna try to start c25k week 3 this upcoming week, and see how I do.
Got the new job, I start tomorow morning:cheerleader: The money is crap:mad: but I gotta have a job...Really surprised the salary was that low, especially with 11 years in roadside assistance experience. Oh well, I'm hoping to at least like the job, that might make up for it,a and still:fingerscrossed: that Scott finds something and fast!
Back from FL -- 18 ish hour :driver:straight back but stayed behind Preakness traffic and ahead of Orioles traffic. I died, just died the last 1 1/2 hours (the hook back around, as the Viking knows it). I did wake up briefly at 6 a.m. and went downstairs to weigh myself...
Only 1 1/2 lbs up from the day I left. I guess I have my eating under control as I didn't run a lick. NOW, to add back the miles. I am picking up my dog Renee at the end of the day, so I think we'll go out for a couple miles tonight. Gotta go do some painting and furniture moving at the old place as the realtor is taking pictures tomorrow, so I have a full day coming up with that.
It is nice to come back to spring weather at the coast. Too bad it's all work and no play today!

Since DW took two pay cuts since August, including a job change, I can totally relate! I hope your income rebounds quickly. :fingerscrossed: On the plus side for us, she got promoted once (with a modest raise) and is doing some limited part time coding from home {night/weekends} for her old employer, so the money is creeping back (though still SIGNIFICANTLY less [roughly 25%] than 2008 and the first half of 2009!).

Game Night was fun. Weighing myself this morning- badm as expected. Up 7.2#. But sometimes I bounced 10 or 11; lots of salt + drinking extra water for several hours late at night sure loads on the temp. water weight for me. Might even be worse Monday from Chinese tonight, but I should have burned the extra calories and processed out the sodium by Monday or Tuesday, so I'm hoping Wednesday morning the scale & I should get along again! :D
Totally OT rant: Church this AM was frustrating- the (relatively, about a year old) new service still keeps changing things around and I'm just fend up with it. Maybe I need to take a break then find a new one... Granted I only got 4 hours of sleep so I'm sure that didn't help my mood or temper, BUT this has been brewing since well before the service started! :headbrickwall:
Plan to try and take a nap and go for a swim. Probably make me feel better and definitely good for me. Take care everyone and enjoy what's left of the weekend!!!

Nono, welcome back! :) I am hoping to do as well as you did with the weight gain for our trip coming up. Kinda nervous actually. Don't want to eat carrot sticks all week, but also don't want to lose ground. I will be happy to gain only a lb or two. What a DRIVE!!!!!
CB, remember age is just a number. If you start telling yourself you are old, then you will start acting old. ;) HOWEVER, the fatigue your experiencing is probably related to everything that you have on your plate. AFIB, Stress of house, loss of activity related to tree limb in your leg, etc. If you are wanting to get some weight off, but can't exercise a lot, I would look into a diet that is more protein less carb. SouthBeach is a good one that kick starts your metablism and weight loss. Phase 1 sucks but I have never met a person who did not lose weight doing that plan. I am glad you found a doc you like, that is so important to find someone you can feel comfortable with.
Scott and I had a great 10 miler in the rain this morning. Rain running in the spring is great down here, so refreshing. Almost like a cleansing. We did look like drowned rats at breakfast, luckily we always eat at a outside table at our favorite cafe. Scott and I both had a PR on a 10 mile training run, crazy that I can keep up with him on base runs now. Amazing how running pain free can make such a difference! Duh!! *slaps forehead*....

Roz I understand about running pain free. I've cautiously removed my knee braces after the mini and am finding I can run hills without pain, and in a faster time than with them.
As I wait for ME here at MCO (woohoo!) I want to pose a question that has been on my mind recently. How did everyone get started rrunning?
For me, I (jokingly) made a deal with myself that if ever a race was held while I was at WDW I would train for it, not because a cared about fitness but because I wanted a Disney medal. Well the very next trip I took started with the RFTT so I started training for the 10K. I thought I would run the race and that be it but about 2 months into training I feel in love.

MM, have a GREAT trip! Can't wait to read your take on AKV. Especially dealing with the running issue. I am kinda stressing staying at BLT trying to map out a place to do our runs. Have a magical trip!! :goodvibes:
As for why I started running. I don't even know where I found the Couch to 5K program. I just knew I needed to do something. I was getting fatter and fatter. Big eye opener for me was I was in a emergency situation with a patient and had to run down to pharmacy and back up 3 flights of stairs. Well by the time I ran back up, I was so out of breath I could just hand off the med to the Doc and had to sit down to catch my breath. He made a comment about how I needed to get more active and it was pretty sad that I was that out of shape. Well it was like a light bulb went off! Holy Crap, I am FAT! And if I don't start doing something TODAY I am going to get FATTER! Somewhere I picked up C25K and started on that. Then very shortly in program I read Carrie's RR on the old Minnie Race. Something just clicked in me, reading how happy she was, and how she felt so great to accomplish something....so I registered for the Princess and as they say the rest is history! Down 6 dress sizes and feel better than when I was 18. :)
Have a great first day at work Jen! I know everyone will be so impressed by all your experience.

MM....Isn't it grand to be just STARTING a Disney trip and don't you feel a bit sorry for the people who are getting OFF ME and headed home? Have a wonderful trip!
Roz...if you're staying at BLT you might try running around to the Poly and GF and then out the back road (called Center Drive). Turn left and I think there is a bike path along the road that eventually ends up in Windermere.
Well, my bp monitor came right quick (thanks amazon.com) and I've had fun playing with it...126/77 not bad for an old fatty. I just got back from dinner at a friends house and had two glasses of wine and ribs and even cake....and I never, ever eat cake.....but there ya go. Oh, and my pulse was 75....will be interesting to see what haps if I go into another afib episode.
Heck, I feel better already!!!!:cheerleader:

not because a cared about fitness but because I wanted a Disney medal.
I had started to care about fitness and was quite happy on my elliptical trainer at home, but I stopped by this thread looking for tips on where my parents could run @ AKL (no suggestions then either) and started thinking about a Disney medal and how cool that would be- something Disney I'd never done! I even got one BEFORE my parents or brother did. ;) Sometimes I'm not entirely sure how long I'll keep running though. Apparently I only drank a half glass of the (running) cool-aid! :rotfl2: I never had pain or injuries from my elliptical and pretty minimal aches if anyhting from weights or swimming, but running often isn't too comfortable. Partly for that reason there is more of a sense of accomplishment though- its sometimes a battle to complete runs; elliptical while watching DVDs isn't terribly challenging. Is that masochistic? :confused24: I also seemed to loose weight more consistently from my ellip 6-7 days a week then when I started running as almost my only exercise last summer, which is why I'm keeping a cross-training regamin in my plans this season. :thumbsup2:

I went down something similar with my parents in Feb... It wasn't posted as off limits, but the one I'm thinking of was beside a creek and unpaved/grassy. Dad told me it goes back quite a ways; we didn't go back TOO far on it though since I was with them and we were already about an hour into the run. I'm pretty sure the one I'm thinking of is the upper left quadrant of this map, and we went down somewhere past where it downs & left...:

WOW...cool map! I went down Floridian Way which does go through Disney's 'back' forty and then left on Center and left on Reams. Not sure of the mileage but there are some really nice homes and an 'equestrian drive' off of Reams road. I just can't remember for sure if there was a bike/walking path or not. A sign is posted at the GF end that the road is 'for authorized vehicles' but not at the Center Drive end. I assume all the folks that live off of Reams road and Ficquette Road all use this way when coming to Disney. World Drive (BLT)also goes back to Center Drive, but it is of course much shorter and I know you like to do those long runs.

Craig - Hope the added weight was just salt. If you go up that quickly, it almost has to be. Way to go on all your hard work!
CB - :hug1: Hoep you get the afib under control and the snow melts soon!
ROzzie - I just signed up for a sprint Friday. DIdn't want my first race of teh year to be an olympic. SO, will have a sprint the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Thanks for asking. I really am excited to see what my swim does. Then again, it will be cold. COnsidered renting a wetsuit, but htey don't make women's in my size. Think that may have been the inspiration I need to get my tail on track again. Cool that you had such a refreshing run! Rain really isn't too bad if you're not goign *that* far and it's not cold.
MM - lol. I think it's a sign you need to do a tri. Can you fit me in your suitcase? I need to get away!
Jen - Sorry the pay is so low. Will you keep looking ot see if you can find something better? At elast this will keep your bills paid, yes? Hope oy and Scott both find osmething worthy soon!
nono - Hope you are recovered soon. I drove 9 to 12 hours (depending on weather) to get to college. Over 12 and I'm flying. Of course, that's much easier to do with just the 2 of us. Kudos for the ability to do teh long drives!
How did I get started on fitness? In 2004, I was going on a DCL cruise (land/sea) adn looked at the scale and in the mirror and was disgusted. Started Curves a couple weeks before the cruise. Met my parents at Epcot during tha ttrip. I will never forget walking to Spoodles and thinking how awesome it waas that I still could not keep up with my dad. He had been diabetic for 5 years, but took care of it with diet/exercise adn minimal meds. He never really liked sweetts. Well, one week later, I was at work adn got the call that my dad was int he hospital and supposed to have triple-bypass surgery the next day. :-O They said he would have been dead years earlier if he hadn;t taken such good care of himself. I take after him medically (low blood sugar, etc). So, that was a huge scare.
After that trip, was looking in to DVC and found DIS and WISH and found out you could run a marathon in WDW. ...... So, why am I so much heavier now than I was when I started this journey to be more healthy??????? Ugh.

So, why am I so much heavier now than I was when I started this journey to be more healthy??????? Ugh.
Paradoxes like that are always confusing. Good luck turning it around; can be tricky. Does "Muscle is more dense than fat?" help any???
As for my weight spikes I mentioned, I'm certain it's salt linked. Especially when I'm dieting seriously I drink a LOT of water (or other clear liquids like some tea...)- 1.5 to 2 gallons total in 24 hours isn't uncommon. Add extra sodium and therefore retain more than usual makes weight add up FAST; H2O is what, about 8 pounds to the gallon? This morning I was 230.8, about what I expected from those two dinners back to back. It'll be down again soon. It's people who have extremely stable weight that perplex me - I NEVER have been especially constant for more than a couple days; over the past two years I can probably count on one hand the number of times I weighed the same thing for two consecutive days! I'll be on a steady trend from time to time, spike up 5 pounds or so literally overnight for a day or two, then drop down 6 or more and be back on a steady trend again. Happens over and over. Part of why i weigh myself daily; if I only did once a week or something and timed it wrong I may NEVER seem to have any progress!!! :rotfl2: Perhaps I should graph it out; might make a cool roller-coaster layout! ;)

First....MM have a great trip!!
As for how did I get started running....it's all Roz, nono, Carrie and Lisa's fault!!! :rotfl2: Seriously...when everyone started signing up for the Princess I was figuring that I would just go and cheer everyone on because I'm not a runner. I was then told that you don't have to run, you can walk. So I thought that, sure, I can walk 13 miles. We do that all the time while in the parks, right! So, I said that if everything turned out alright after my echo/stress test that I would sign up. Well, I didn't die while taking the test and everything was looking good so I signed up, even before I started walking to see if I could do the 16 min. mile pace. When I started walking I was no where near that and thought that I'll never be able to get it down to what I needed it to be. Well, I did and the rest is history. I'm still not a runner and probably won't ever be, but that's fine with me as long as I can still make it from start to finish. I'm glad to be able to particapate with all the wonderful Disney friends that I have meet and hope to be able to do it for a long time. It has also given me the opportunity to do local races with my son, DIL, grandson and granddaughter.
So thanks Roz, nono, Carrie and my Princess race partner Lisa for getting this old lady started on this journey and all of your encouragement that kept me going. :hug1::rocker:
Had a great time with Stimpy, Laura, and CB in Jan. and looking forward to more races with them and Jen I'll see you in Dec. :cheerleader:

Woke up feeling kinda pahh but I chose not to let that stop me. Weight: 225.8 (down 5 pounds from yesterday). Excluding WU/CD, I did 3.30 miles at 10:11 AP. :D Best I've had in quite a while! :woohoodance: 51 degrees, 94% humidity when I got back in about 2/3rds through it started to rain, so I got to partly emulate the Rozes Monday this morning. :rotfl2: Still have a bit of a headache, but very glad I got out and moving. Tonight is our weekly Chinese takeout night from the small place around the corner from home, sooo due to the same salt scenario I need to revise that 'weight goal' of being back down by Wednesday; lets shoot for Friday to be under 223 instead. :fingerscrossed: If it happens, great- if not, it will! :silly:

Carrie, I understand that one and think it is great that you care! The only thing I will say is have patience with yourself as you "get back in control." I've been doing so for 3-4 years now, and it has made the journey back into some clothes a lot more serene and hopefully lasting.

Tried out my new Garmin Forerunner 305 before dinner. It's distance #s were within 0.02 miles of my old one for the same course (and I may have started it one driveway or so differently!) so that is really cool. Both line up w/ GMAP-Pedometer very closely as well. Had a nice inaugural run with it tonight; averaged 10:02 pace for 3.33 miles! {w/ warm up & cool down walks I put in 3.66).
Gave DW my old 305 since it started working again AFTER I ordered the new one. :oweye: We set it up for interval training, kicked it to "Indoor Mode", and she used it on the 'mill tonight for her C25K work.
On Disney news, our deed for our VWL add on arrived in today's mail. :goodvibes: Hope the gang is doing well!

Well we only ended up doing 2 miles. It was hotter than expected, and the wind died. Even though Renee was hosed down, I was a bit worried about pressing it, esp. since she was making us maintain an 8:30 pace, so we called it good at 2 mi.
This afternoon, we're going to go for 3. I'm bringing a water bottle and her folding bowl. We may end up again with 2 depending on how hot it is...or we may do 2...rest under a tree, then do another 1. D's swim practice is long enough that we can do that, and the pool has great shade trees. :)

On the plus side, not only is it Friday :cheerleader:, but I weighed 222.0 # this morning! That's my lowest since July 3rd, 2009. :D (I was 221.x # that day then started a trend of climbing on average slowly but surely until I broke 250 again :mad: a few months back; in fact, I was already in that gaining pattern since my low for the decode of 214.8 #, which was on May 29, 2009. I'm heading back and below there though- just need to keep focused! :thumbsup2: Then again, in saying that I'm probably repeating myself. I'm probably repeating myself. I'm probably repeating myself. ... <fading echo> Dead men tell no tales.....) {Boy, I really DO need some more sleep- I'm very slap happy and it probably shows! Sorry :blush:}

DG, congrats on the weight loss! I am now officially down 8 lbs myself. :) Feels great to finally be getting somewhere with the scale. I wish I was organized like you about what I weighed, when. I can't even remember what I weighed at Rehoboth. Or what I weighed in high school, or when I got married. I know what my lowest adult weight is 128. When I weighed that I am not entirely sure on. :scratchchin: I guess it's because I have always gone a lot by my clothes. I am making a break from the past and have given away/donated/consigned anything larger than a size 8. Will have to go naked if I put weight on again.
Nono, sounds really nice how you can break it up like that. I missed our morning run this morning. Got to the stop sign at 0400 and Scott's Achilees was too achy to start so we went back to the house. Now I have to decide to run tonight my slated 6 or what. Been blah all day, knee talking, and I have a 5K trail run tomorrow. Might just play hookie to be fresh in the morning. I don't like having to race with another run just a few hours before.
Carrie, have you gotten your thyroid checked? Sometimes that can be the culprit. Especially if we are excercising and eating decent and still putting on weight. I know a friend our age had hers checked when she kept struggling with weight loss and it was all wacked out. Just a thought.

It just dawned on me that we will actually be local for the EE 5K in 2weeks. At first I was like "hheeeh???" until I read the price tag. Over a $100 a person for a 5K! I know it includes a park ticket to AK, but I don't need a park ticket to AK. Plus we are leaving the morning of to go see my Dad in Tampa, which is way more important. But still, I can freaking believe over a $100 for a 5K. But I would get to go over a log and get a medal and shirt. Okay rant over....
We skipped the 5K this morning. Scott's achilees is not a 100% and a tough trail run would probably be the worst thing he could do for it. I slept in, and about to head out now for 6 mile tempo. It's already in the 80s temp wise. Oh and if anyone was keeping score at home, we turned on our AC yesterday. What finally broke the standoff was the dogs surrounded Scott hassling with their tongues hanging out. ;) It was 90 yesterday, 86 degrees in house.

-------
$100 for a 5k is certainly a lot, and I don't like it including a park ticket since DW & I both have APs. It would seem fair to me if they knocked off 75% of rack price for the ticket if you have an AP, but I'm pretty sure though don't. Sadly, if I were visiting the Mouse at the time I'd probably drop it in a heartbeat; I'm too much of a junkie not to. Hmmm... Maybe I shouldn't post that in case Mouse Scouts are watching for pricing intel!!! :scared07: I already budget a frightening amount of our income specifically for Disney trips, DVC dues + loan, and ancillary items. :covermouth: Shouldn't have posted that either! :rotfl2:

Mission accomplished! :D I got in 4.51 at 10:34 pace. Then DW got home from some errands and while getting ready to go out for her first outdoor stab at C25K. She asked (mostly joking) "Do you want to come with me?". I was still in my running clothes, so I said "Sure, why not." So I walked along her for it, but we were cut short. She got in her warm up walk and two run intervals, but then was really feeling it and an electrical storm was closing in fast (we could see and hear it in the distance) so we took a short cut home and she walked it in. We ended up with 1.05 miles in 21:08.99 for her, or 20:13 AP. She was happy- her current goal is just to make sure she finishes our 5k on August 7th in under an hour, so she is darn close to that pace now, just needs the distance!
Hope everyone enjoys the rest of their weekend!

I loved reading everyone's stories about how they started running. Very inspiring.
Well, I have officially signed up for the DLR 1/2 marathon. I still don't have a job to know if I can get away that weekend, but it was at 91% capacity and I knew I couldn't put it off until after I get back from Africa. I'm hoping I can wait a month for the Jan 1/2, though.
WDW was hot last week, so I didn't do much running. That was probably not a bad thing, because I couldn't really find a good place at AKL anyway. I didn't try running along any of the roads (I really don't trust tourists in their cars or the WDW buses), and I think I managed to squeak out 1.5 miles running an out and back from Jambo to Kidani (winding around Kidani's pool and BBQ area). I did run one day between GF and Poly, but I couldn't do the full run WDW had mapped out--that requires running through the Poly's resort grounds beside the pool, and it was just too crowded.
Roz, you might consider heading over to WL/Ft. Wilderness and running around back there. There used to be a boat from CR to both WL/ Ft. W. Or you can be brave and run on the roads.
Ugh, I feel like a total cow after WDW. I really wish they offered healthier food options and more reasonable portion sizes. The Wave had food that didn't taste too processed and refined. But the concierge lounge just had junk food all day (well, there was some fresh fruit at breakfast). I've been told I won't be eating much in Africa, though, so I guess I'll make up for it.
5K this weekend--I need to run this week beforehand. This 5K was the first race I ran last year, at the end of my 8 week (I think mine was 9 wk) building up a running base before starting to train for the 10K. Ahh, memories.

Hey folks:wave:,
Just popping in to say hello and that I hope eveyone is doing well.
The training runs are going great and the weight is coming off at a healthy rate. (That rymes):scratchchin:
Anyway,The Stimpys gave me a book a while back called "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougal. Now I don't expect any peacocks going off to Mexico and running 100 miles through Copper Canyon wearing sandals any time soon, but I believe it is a must read. The book was by far one of the best I have ever read. It truly captures the spirit of running.
Everyone be safe in the heat this summer. Look forward to seeing many of you in September.

Philadelphia in late November.
DW is aiming for this one as well. She's really been on a serious regiment since the Broad Street run. I gave her a Nike Sportband for Mother's Day and she's loving it. Really motivating her to get out.
Have you done this one before Nono?

Ohhh my motivation is slipping! Is it bad that I'm only running like once a week??!??? But I'm up to 5 without trying which is good. My feet are KILLING me though! New shoes should be in any day now (Asics Gel Nimbus 12)...so maybe that will amp up my motivation!
How is everyone doing?

Uh, yeah, you really need to do it 3x a week at minimum, and for awhile to make it just "part of your life." Then you can take a month off like me!
I did run 5 mi yesterday and should end up with 17 mi total this week. I'm officially training for AF/TwinCities/Philadelphia/OrlandoHalf/HiltonHeadHalf/Boston Marathons. Yep...I have my entire schedule figured out through Boston. :scared07:

I'm doing pretty well; katiegel (http://dvcnews.com/forum/member.php?u=4129)- I have very limited personal experience, but everything I've read or heard says a minimum of 3 times weekly as nono said... Good luck with the new shoes though!
So nono, you are currently training for 5 marathon equivalents (2 halves = 1 whole {a la 1 BR + Studio = "2 BR equivalent"} ) and rebuilding from 17 miles a week? Perhaps there is hope for some of us [read me] low mileage mortals! ;)
--------------
Plan here is for about 7 miles on Monday since I'll be out of town Sat/Sun. then I'll do the ellip on Tuesday and go back to 'normal sched.' Wednesday. I think I'll tweak Monday that up just a little- my current longest ever run/walk is 7.02 miles and at that time I wasn't doing my 'warm up walk' I do now. I want to best that distance (excluding my warm up & cool down!) and am probably going to target at least 7.1 ish; that should be about 1/4 mile more if I were counting my warm up walk, but enough to honestly set a new personal best however you count it! :silly:
My overall running & cross training plan (and so far I've been pretty good the last 3 weeks) is currently-
Tuesday & Thursday - "Short run" = 3.25 miles {I frequently do a ~1.5 mile (30 min.) walk w/ a coworker twice weekly [on Tr/Th] as well.}
Saturday - "Long run"; increase distance by about a mile one week, then taper back two miles the next, then increase by 3 (so 7 miles / 5 miles / 8 miles / 6 miles / 9 miles...) from now through hitting 14 miles about two weeks before the Air Force Half in Sept. and tapering down before the big day.
Sunday - Swim 30 min. laps
Monday - 30 minutes elliptical
Wed & Fri - lift weights (upper bod - takes somewhere between 13 -17 minutes) + do 15 - 21 minutes on the ellip {My dad thinks I should always do at least 30 minutes aerobic, but right now I'm not ready to commit to that 7 days a week...}
M-W-F : also work my way up to 210 crunches (two days ago I did 150; that's my target for tonight as well- thinking I'll increase by 10 per week 'till I meet the goal IF I feel OK doing so...)
If my body tells me I should or my schedule strongly conflicts with that plan, I'll toss in a rest day as needed.
Not sure if I ever mentioned the family discussion on above plan- I did actually print things out and bring it up on the 16th. My younger bro said "it'll get you across the finish line". My dad didn't say much. I had mentioned looking at some of Gallaway's mileage and run/walk training plans in creating mine, and D thinks G is a hypocrite by telling people they can be successful but do low mileage, because G was doing 200+ miles a week at his peak. OK, that's great for my dad who did 100 - 125 miles a week (maybe more sometimes) for 10ish years around his peak, but it's rather intimidating to a lot of us noobs (or at least me). [Incidentally, I'm not sure what he's doing these days as far as distance goes (his stride has shortened a lot since his knee surgeries); I think it's usually a minimum of 1 hour daily and 2 hours AT LEAST once a week.] Well, at least he didn't really say anything bad about my plan; sometimes silence is better than derogatory comments- I'll take what I can get! :thumbsup2:

I've had a okay week. Been getting up before work to run, which means the alarm going off @ 0330. Shocking enough I have adjusted--unlike last summer. I do take a nap in afternoon. Missed yoga last night, might try one of my videos later on tonight. I am averaging about mid 30s for the week, and glancing ahead on schedule I am going to start cranking it out soon. I hope I can still sqeeze the mileage in before work. I really like my afternoons "off". My RP is no longer training with me, so it's been a adjustment too. Everyone has different seasons in their life and she and I are just in a different season.
Katie, I would also recommend getting in at least 3 days a week. You will find as you build a base that by running a tiny bit more that your body recovers more quickly and adjusts. Lots of pain goes away when you can run more. Then again, you feel pain when you are developing base, and oh, if you run too much, you get pain too. Yep, training is a tightrope act LMAO! Good luck to you.
DG, I think your plan looks fine. Remember you have to do what you feel comfortable with. My mom was a awesome, trophy carrying home tennis player. She even played at a Sports Illustrated tournament in NYC. I could barely get my ball over the net. I think too I was so intimidated by her success that I was scared to put myself out there. I regret that now, I would love to be able to play tennis well. I admire you for putting yourself out there, and talking to your dad for your advice. I bet if he hasn't said it, your dad is so proud of the steps you have taken. Interesting tidbit about Galloway--I have heard that before somewhere too.
Nono, HiltonHead has a HM? :scratchchin:
DG, folks like your Dad can't factor in what cross-training does to you, but I also see his point about Galloway. BTW, someone linked me to a marathon plan of his that has you do 26 mi as a training walk/run sometime before a marathon. I was suprised to see that.
Anyway, tell your Dad I qualified for Boston (with the caveats that I'm an old chick) on a max mileage of 42 mpw with decent cross-training. (I think that's right anyway...and maybe only 2 weeks were over 40...) I'm hoping this year to get over 50 mpw once! LOL -- but then again, I have to move my crooked body forward with baby steps. I figure when I'm 80 years old, I'll be doing 90 mpw before a marathon. :rotfl2:
Anyway, we have to meet your parents at some point! It's always good to rub elbows with some hard core folks -- sharpens us up. :goodvibes:

:D I'm sure that can be arranged. They'll be at the World in about a week if that helps... Funny you should mention that though- a few weeks ago my dad asked if 'we' {I believe he meant Team Peacock} were still thinking about doing the "River to Sea" relay in summer 2011 up in NJ; so if not before, you might get a chance then as long as we can scrounge up 7 people (I think one proposed roster was you, me, my parents, my brother, and the Rozes [if they are available], then have my DW & my sis-in-law as drivers)! :thumbsup2:
On another note, I told my dad you qualified for Boston back when it first happened; seems like he nodded (we were on the phone IIRC), said something like 'So at least some of the people in your group are pretty serious', asked your time, then started trying to calculate your age group... :oweye: I didn't realize your weekly mileage was that low (by his standards) at the time- could have been fun to tell him that and see if his head exploded! :rotfl2: Speaking of Boston, I was just learning to count the first time he did Boston, and while watching the start with my mom I'm told I got a huge smile and really wide eyes, pointed to the pack, and said "TWO Daddies!" :thumbsup2: I don't remember saying it, but I do vaughly remember the start going on and on and on and on!

Found a cheapo hotel AAA rate for $53 in Gainsville. Arrive there 11pm. Get up, now what to do about running? Only a few miles. Will arrive around 7am.
Option #1 is going on to BLT and check in and just see if the room is ready. (yeah right) Then run either on TM there or jot over to Poly-GF route. But where to shower and change??? Option #2 is go first to OKW. Run around there, shower, change at OKW. Then tada, off to BLT.

Roz...Depending on where you have the studio, OLs store at the door to the 1 bd if it is a lockoff (like at BWV) or out on the balcony at OKW or over between the bed and front window at OKW. If that helps.
Well, I 'm posting to say that I ran a mile just now ...it was a very slow mile, but my ankle has been hurting walking, so I decided it might need a little stretch of other muscles. My heart rate was up to 150 BUT I have a bp monintor now and it has been reading a 64-70 resting pulse and that's right where i want it, so I don't mind if it jumps while running (as long as it doesn't trigger an a-fib). (Just as an FYI, I haven't RAN a mile in forever...can walk a LONG time, but running seems to be hard on me, so this was a pleasant surprise.

I'll be derned if I can't remember anything except the bathroom sink is in the kitchen (and I don't think there is enough space to slide them under it). Is there a little 'alcove' for the door to the 1 bedroom? Maybe between the bed and the wall/patio door?

Ahhh, good idea, except I would need a extra studio to store all the crap that is in them. On a side note, we are taking 1 locker back to the armpit with us. I can't justify the expense of 2 lockers anymore now that we always drive. Plus, I only use about 50% what is in the lockers now. I know our second locker is full of clothes that neither Scott nor I can wear anymore. (which is a good thing, but still...)

Just got back from our MI one night trip. It was fun! We went to "The Fly Trap" and "Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger", two restaurants featured on the Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives show on Food Network. :eating: Both were great!!! :D Also visited the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village- it was interesting. They were doing Civil War reenactments / demonstrations for Memorial Day which was cool. Certainly not Disney, but a little variety isn't gonna' kill me, $85 got me a membership and free admission for the two of us for a year, and DW & I are working through visiting and doing SOMETHING in all 50 states together, and now we can cross off MI. :thumbsup2: Stayed at "Webber Inn" and had their Sunday brunch buffet this morning; very tasty, nice decour, cool place- ate WAYYYYYY too many calories, but that's an entirely different story and no need to dwell on it now... :rolleye11:

Probably missed her, but WTG MM on the 5k and hope everything goes well overseas- looking forward to hearing from you when ya' get back!

Roz - We've only stayed in studios and don't have an O/L, but right in front of the lockoff door (all BLT studios are lockoffs) there is probably enough space; that is where we put our suitcases when staying there. I don't use the closets or dressers usually in hotel rooms- too likely I'll forget something! :rotfl2: The door is basically across from the bathroom. As for the sink comment someone made, I assume it is about the bathrom sink NOT being in the bathroom, but just around the corner in a shared alcove with the kitchenette. So mini-bar style sink on one side, bathroom sink if you turn around and vice-versa. Weird setup, but it works. DW, my parent's, and her parents all found it strange but OK. Combined we've been in 4 different studios in 'the sandwich'; two SVs, one LV, and one MK view. All that said, with the possible exception of value studios @ Jambo, I'm pretty sure BLT's studios are the smallest in DVC-land; hope it isn't too hard for the two of you shrinking down from the 1BRs you are accustomed to. :fingerscrossed:
Hope everybody had a great end to what's left of the weekend. Hopefully I'll have a good training report to share after tomorrows run; probably gonna' try to get it in before the afternoon / evening thunderstorms roll in that they are predicting!
Peacocking in with 17 miles for the week. :p
Ran 6 mi tonight in 82 degrees F -- it wasn't going well because I couldn't seem to break much of a sweat, even though I wasn't dehydrated. I did carry 8 oz coconut water with me, which was gone by mi 2...so at mi 4, I did what any sensible girl would do -- I took off my shoes, and ran the last two calf deep in the surf. I felt really fine and then came home and took a cold shower.

Anyhow, inspired by the Ethiopians (1st place womens) and Colorado women who are currently ahead of the USA and Kenya....I decided to run (again, slowly_)while the 5 arms of the armed forces parachuted from a plane over the stadium...cool!!!!! HA! I matched my steps to the runners...of course their 'reach' was about 5 times as long as my baby steps, but it was fun nonetheless.

For the Peacocks who use them, what are your current favs in hydration belt land? I'm prob. gonna' buy one in the next couple days; might look at Dick's sporting goods later this week, but am likely to mail order...
Anywho, got my long run in- new PR distance for a training run! :yahoo: Today I did 7.23 miles @ 11:05 average pace!!! (Prev. longest was 7.01 miles @ 11:53 AP on 11/14/2009) :D I slept in, finished a Fiber One bar and small yogert smoothy breakfast about 11:15 AM [with ~32 oz. of iced green tea, but I didn't finish them until closer to 11:45]. Started my run about 1 PM. All well and good, EXCEPT thunder started about 12:45, rain about 12:55, and skies opened around 1:05... :oweye: Figures things would begin as predicted; but hey, they said 40% change of percip. last night- seemed like the odds still favored me. Luckily, it tapered to nuttin' after a few minutes, then around 45 minutes in I got intermittent light rain the rest of the time. 82 degrees before the rain hit, 69 with 82% humidity after I got home. So perhaps it was a good thing after all...
I tried to be smart in other ways though. Popped a Sunkist Fruit Gem every 20 minutes (Tasty glucose! :eating: I was reading something that in most cases normal candy does just fine for most people exercising for 60 min to 2 hours, no real need to buy special 'sports gels' or similar items unless you prefer them) and took a swig of Propel on walk intervals after 30 minutes unless it was time for a gumdrop. ;) Felt great doing that; want to start training myself fuel wise on my long runs for the half; this was the first time I've treid to eat or drink anything during a run. Tried rigging a bottle holder for said Propel using two bungie type hair bands DW provided. Lets just say I carried the bottle switching from hand to hand for pretty much the whole run, and didn't like doing that, thus my request for input on belts! :rotfl2:

DG, I used to use a belt, but found it was doing weird things to my hips. Never ever thought I could get used to a hand held bottle. No way, not going to try it. Finally decided to try one out after hip issue, and haven't looked back since. I don't even know it's in my hand, and actually feel naked without it when I do races. This is what I use. Scott uses something similar from Ironman that has a pouch for gels on side.
http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage-AHHB.html
As for gels and such....you have to find what works for you. I know last year I was "geling" up a storm on runs. Now I am trying to extend the fuel and go on fewer supplements. Still hydrating like a mother though. That is one thing I can't give up, me and dehydration down here don't get along. I am going with hammer products for electrolyte replacements--they are cleaner than a lot of products out there. (artifical sweetners that may interfere with metablism of nutrients) But right now I am up to 10 miles without fueling, just water. It's a theory out there that to train under supplemented (if that's a word) than for races supplement up. Your body will be "like omg we have something to work with, let's GO!" Like I said it's a theory I am tooling with. I would not even think of trying it last summer. This training cycle just experimenting. I know everyone has to find what works for them, and no way is right or wrong. For instance for all the people who train undersupplemented there are tons of successful runners who load up. I read somewhere where Lance Armstrong took a Gel every 30 min when he ran Boston. So each his own. :)
Congrats on the distance record! I remember that feeling and there is nothing like it--wait till you get up in teens. You feel like you are on a mountain top. :thumbsup2:

Figures- as soon as I read several things and try to start something (glucose while running) it turns out that may be out of date / fashion! :oweye: Guess I'll always be at least a few steps behind most of the team here... ;) {pun intended}
With that bottle, do you usually keep it on one hand or do you switch it back and forth? :scratchchin: And is one bottle enough for most runs, or are you still stashing drop bottles ahead of time along your route (weren't you doing something like that last year?)
DW mentioned a Camel Back, perhaps a small one like their 50 oz. model. But I don't recall seeing runners use those during any normal races (i.e. NOT a cross country ultra or something); do some people and I've just been oblivious?
Thanks!

!
No no no. Not out of date. Just another theory floating about. Remember one way isn't right, and one way isn't wrong. Just what works best for you. I would say overfueling is better than under fueling when you are hitting new longer distances--especially if you run alone. But that may be nursy nurse in me talking.
Usually one 20 oz bottle is good for 8 miles and below. Anything above and I either stop at water fountain or we drop water on route, or leave it in a car and loop back around. Remember the humidity down here is in the mid 80s now, temp climbing near 90. I sweat like someone doused me with a water hose. Some people hydrate less. I run better hydrated. Even with all that water my pee test is never clear. (yes one of the best, easiest ways to see how well you are hydrated :D)

But that may be nursy nurse in me talking.
:rotfl2: I was half kidding on the out of date; look at my dad being Mr. no cross training; definitely an older school ASAIK. I certainly will keep experimenting on with hydration and fuel as the long run miles rack up! Thanks for the info - good to hear ideas & what works for others. :D
I very frequently pass with a clear test weather running or not, even with no en-route hydration, but since I've been doing shorter distances to date at least I didn't expect that to be an issue. I usually don't do a 'bare weight' immediately before and after, but may start, especially if the first test gets darker and/or I feel 'funny'.
BTW, at the start of your last post, were trying to coax nono in to add her advice / perspective? If so, I think your punctuation might have been a little off... ;)

What kind of shoes do you like to wear when NOT running? I'm looking to get a new pair of casual "athletic" shoes to wear with jeans & shorts on the weekends and vacations, that kind of thing. Probably also move them to work when I get new ones every 6 months or so for my usually twice a week ~1.5 mile walks. Some thoughts I've had so far, based on some things I've read online:
Buy new name brand "walking" shoes
Buy new "running" shoes that are more cushiony and with a narrower heal than I'd want for actually running
Buy a new pair of running shoes and swap my oldest running ones down to be my 'walking' shoes
The first two options seem to have pretty limited choices in wide (2E) size 11.5 or 12.
Another thought would be a "cross trainer" which seems to offer more options, but I know many people in this group hate them so I think I'll only buy them for use on the ellip and then when i get new ones toss the older pair in the garage to use when I'm doing yardwork w/ DW or something...

:DHey, thanks you guys but ya know I'm only running a mile. I posted becausee the thought of running a whole mile (whereas I have no problems walking 10) had been very daunting for me. I wanted to try it tho to see how it affected by bp and also to see if it might use more calories. The key for me was to slow it down so that I could go further than a quarter mile at 6.0....so like I said, i'm way slow but able to go much farther without keeling over.

Awesome! :cheerleader:
I decided to basically try a temp run tonight; I did a solid 3.32 miles run at an average 10:25 pace! :D DW did 1 mile on the 'mill today; she's trying to get back on the prep. for 5k bandwagon. I stopped @ Dick's Sporting Goods and picked up a 22 oz. water bottle with a hand strap and small pouch that I think is similar to Rozzie said Mr. Roz uses. I might try getting a belt in a few weeks as well and use it for longer distances; I'll need to experiment!

Well finally leave tomorrow. Headed to BLT for 6 nights, then my Dad's in Tampa for 2. Plan on runs @ Poly/GF, OKW/SSR, and FW. Planning a 13 miler at my Dads on a great recreational trail by his house in Tarpon Springs. It is ranked one of top rec trails in state. :thumbsup2:
Going to try to eat as much as I can according to my plan with a few cheats here and there. I have lost 12 lbs so far, and I would hate to put on a bunch of weight and be right where I was a month ago. Hence that is why I plan on running bunches down there. We do have a cheat day planned, for Epcot. Going to have some beers and walk around WS. Nibble here and there. Other than that, water with dinner. I have penciled in my Nestle Toll house cookie sandwich from MainSt Bakery, and we are going to split a dole whip for dessert after dinner at the Plaza one night. I know I am a freak, but just think if I can plan ahead what I will cheat on, it will help me in saying no to things I had not planned to cheat on. Make any sense? :confused24: I will check is some here and there. :)
Carrie, sorry the TRi did not come out as planned, but I can't wait to see what all the extra stuff will do to your time next Jan. You are going to be on fire I bet! :goodvibes:

Have a GREAT trip - you might even "run" in to my parents! :rotfl2: They are in an AKV Jambo std. studio June 8 - 11th (3 nights) and Poly + FW/WL areas are some of their favs; they also like POR and have ventured around OKW from there... My boss is also going to the World leaving tomorrow; he's staying in a FW cabin with DW & (2?) adult kids. Makes me EVEN MORE jealous that I'm NOT there! :boohoohoo: Oh well.
FWIW, your 'cheat planning' sounds like a great idea to me :thumbsup2:, and I'm glad to hear you have one of the all important Dole Whips on tap! :eating:
Scale said 221.6 this morning; a recent low {I call them 'Page Crits'}. These past two weeks (due to parties and travel) have been rough diet wise, but at least I'm maintaining overall and actually down a touch (I think I had 223.4 as my low last page [19 days/page] in my notebook). :D One more day on this page- my goal is to always have a new page crit on each one until I get to 200#s! :fingerscrossed: It'll be really cool when I dip under 214.8 - that'll be my lowest in more than 10 years. :goodvibes: Getting close...

Hello peacocks! Just checked in. Arrived @ OKW 0730, ran 6 miles, then shower @ pool lockerroom and nice leisurely bkfast @ Olivias. On to BLT, not only did I get my requests-high floor but room was ready. As I was checking in, text that OLs were ready. Lounging in room looking over BLT activities, and about fell off bed. Complimentary organic beer tasting @ 3pm today with reservation, space very limited. Called and got fit right in! Dinner tonight is @ Cali, then head over to MK to mosey around. Will check in tomorrow. :-)

Rozzies: Wow..the makings of a perfect beginning to a magical vacation!
I decided to walk a mile, take my bp and then run a mile and check it again. Observed that when I walk, i can feel it in my butt muscles, but when I run, I feel it in my knees. Neither is painful at all...just an observation. I've been getting a light stitch in my side when I run...not bad enought to actually stop, but enough to notice. Remind me again what causes that?

CB: Sorry I have no idea what whichness is causing wence, but as long as things aren't painful and the BP is in tolerance I say keep up what your doin! :D
==========
Run yesterday was a hot & humid (by my standards) 4.5- ended up slow, but I finished. The new hand strap water bottle rig worked well; the nozzle/valve thingy is semi-soft rubber and was a little cumbersome to open sometimes while sweaty, but not a huge deal. Plus, DW pointed out it may loosen up a bit with age. Definitely functional. For longer distances I am likely to buy a amphipod belt (or maybe a Nathan's brand waist holster to carry a second bottle to swap for the hand rig? :confused24:) in a few weeks though; we'll see...
I had game night last night, got around 4 hours sleep, and just got back from playing at the early service at church. I think I'm gonna' head back to bed; then I hope to walk 5k with DW (her current run pace for C25K style intervals is at/under my 'powerwalk' pace) and follow that up with my normal 30 min lap swim. She wants to proove to herslef she can finish a 5k, regardless of the time it takes or amount of wlaking now, then she'll worry about continuing a program to speed things up. She says her main goal is to finish our Aug. 7th 5k in under 1 hour- anything else is gravy. :silly:

Checking in from DGs home. At top of the world now....enjoying many refreshments. The fireworks are going to be awesome, the new perimeter foreworks start this weekend for summer.
DG, we love your home so much we have canceled 2 park days just to hang out. Life is god Peacocks!
CB, sounds like what I get. Get it when I am not breathing deep enough to exchange gas. Slow your pace down, take deep breaths, in, out, like 2 steps equal breath in, 2 out per step. It helps me anyway. I got a wicked side stitch a few weekends ago, and went away shortly after doing this.
Did 12 miler this morning @ OKW/SSR/hotel plaza blvd. Still made park opening @ MK. :-)

Did the 5k trianing walk w/ DW but forgot the pool closes an hour earlier than the rest of the rec, so I only got in 16 minutes of laps instead of 30! Oooopsss. Oh well; not a big deal. Exercise is exercise - the walk and a short swim will do. Hope this coming week gets off to a good start, even if some of us AREN'T on vacation... ;)

Ran from Co Springs to Denver....good grief, and I feel good if I just run a mile.
So before the rest of you get to be my age, you might give it a go...run your age in miles on your next birthday! ( And no, I wouldn't even think of it)

Nothing like that awesome man, but I am going to run the inaugural Wine and Dine Half and while I am running it, I will turn 50. That was just too cool to pass up :w00t: 13.1 miles in the middle of the night is enough for me, lol!

Lisa, too cool on the W and D and your bday. Way cool!
I know Scott is doing Goofy (39 miles) for his 39th bday. I think the race is actually a few days before, but close enough.
Well we are golding up to our training, haven't missed a workout, but the eating and drinking part?? Ehh not so much.
Oh and DG, I have a riddle for you. What do you, me and Lisa all have in common now?? ;-)

Hmmm... Having run in the, uh, "unofficial" path across the street west of GF while staying @ BLT?
I keep wondering if you and/or my boss will cross paths with my parents; their flight down was nice when they flew in yesterday. Haven't heard more yet but not really expecting to...

:D That's great and a very selfless act! ;) So how many points do ya' have now, and are they only spread across SSR & BLT or do you have some other ones not in your profile here (as I type this you only show SSR)? :listen:

320 @ SSR. 65 @ BLT. Only enough BLT for a studio every other year. I was shocked @ the studios there. The set up is so much better than normal studio-for us anyway. We loved the resort, did 2 resort days. We really love our resort days and felt that the resort had so much to offer in that sense. Especially momorail pool and bar hopping. ;-). We love the walk to MK, so much quicker than catching monorail.

Glad you're loving the sandwich so much! We bought BLT because I love the monorail, but after staying there it is DW's fav resort and she's less eager to try other ones now! :goodvibes: At first she thought AKV was the nicest (currently marketed at the time; we both also love VWL), but was willing to buy BLT for my sake. :rotfl2:
'Course now we own at all three thanks to my parents, but since they are using the points they paid for me to add on, we can only half-count 100 of those, leaving the two of us with only 221 to use... ;)
Congrats to the Rozzies!!!
That sure is fun news. :yahoo:
Ramping my mileage back up is taking so little of my time, it's hardly worth reporting on...today I finally go out and do a smidgeon of speedwork (1 interval). <yawn> The only think that might make it exciting is that I do my speed on the boardwalk because of every 2 blocks = 1/10 of a mile, and our track being locked. How's that exciting? It isn't, until you factor in that it rained all last night. Slick boards .
Gail, are you back in training now?
Athenna, how are you feeling these days?

I feel good..I seem to be sleeping better the past few nights, my skin allergy seems to be on the mend.
I stopped the C25K training for now, only because, I did weeks 1 and 2 twice, then realized it was getting too close to the 7 mile walk for Boston Childrens Hospital that I am doing this Sunday, and didnt want to risk hurting my knees...However, during my walks lately, my knees have felt so good that I stopped wearing the brace thingy:yahoo:
