I don't know about "sandbagging," nono, as my ITB flared up much faster than I anticipated and never relented.
I had your sister's time confused with yours, hence the sandbagging term. I couldn't believe with all you had been through that you had pulled off a 2:04 for a first half. Hard for anyone to do that without injuries!
Considering that you had ITB issues earlier than you expected, I think your finish time is truly spectacular! Well done! :woohoodance:

Great reports everyone!! I bet it was a blast. MM, sorry to hear about the ITB pain. I agree with nono, that is a great time while suffering like you were. Jen, take care of that toe! Can't wait to see you conquer the OUC. What a different person you are!!

Hey nono (and anyone else for that matter)-
I think you said on another thread that you usually feel fine after giving blood. I'm eligible again and there is a bloodmobile drive this Saturday at the location i went to before. Red Cross called me to ask if I was interested in making an appointment. :silly:
Do you think I'd be OK to exercise, shower, and then give blood Sat., then put in some time on an exercise bike about 24 hours later on Sunday? I'm also slightly concerned about after effects and messing up my Indoor Tri on Sunday the 28th... I want to hedge my bets and make sure I finish, preferablly not dead last. ;) That's two weeks later so I'm on the fence with what to try and do. I only gave blood once before so I don't really have much of a personal frame of reference!

Roz, I cant wait for the OUC either:cheerleader:
Ok, just got back from my dr, said it's NOT infected, because it was draining clear, not pus (sorry, TMI, I know)
So, she put me on antibiotics, said wear loose socks and shoes, wear sandals if I can (thats easier in FL weather than MA weather:grin:) and said no track or treadmill the rest of the week.
Their office is closed tomorrow, so heaven forbid, if it gets worse, she said go to hospital tomorrow or her office Friday...I dont think it'll get worse.

MM, I agree too...that was a great time considering all of your recent injury problems.
Jen, I can't wait until Dec. either cause I will have some company and hopefully stimpy will be joining us also.
Roz, how are you feeling...are you behaving yourself?
nono...are you doing Kennett this year or are you just doing the longer races?

When I was at the finish line, and saw Scott I starting bawling my eyes out! lol.
All I could think was this is the Jen that used to be over 100 lbs overweight and chained smoked for over 20 yrs, and now I'm a medal wearing, half marathon finisher!:goodvibes:.
Those are the moments I love--because I know that I will take them with me forever. I am so proud of you, Jen--not just for finishing a race most people would not have even dreamed of starting, but for all that you accomplished (as mentioned above)! It was awesome to see you come down with your medal, rocking your lipstick and princess pin! Congratulations again!!! :cheerleader:

I wouldn't do it. 4-6 weeks out before an event on a cut-back week, if you'd given several times before, then sure. See if they have another one planned for afer your Tri! :fingerscrossed:

That's slow??? That is the exact pace I did my 3 miler in yesterday and I was pleased just to finish upright. Good job on the run. :)
Oh and for the Blood, I also vote wait to give until after your TRI. I rememeber you had some issues last time you gave with weakness and such--so I would play it safe. Give after the event-- that way it's a win win situation. :thumbsup2:

That's slow??? That is the exact pace I did my 3 miler in yesterday and I was pleased just to finish upright. Good job on the run. :)
Hmmm... Maybe not then! It's slower than some of my better training runs for that distance (I got down to averaging 9:30 pace once or twice and had hopes of a 5k in under 30 minutes that didn't come through), but:
I generally do better in the morning than after work
I got allergy shots around 2 PM yesterday
I'm roughly 30 pounds heavier than my best weight last season (but since I was down just over 85 pounds at my lowest [214.8 in May 2009 from a start of a touch over 300 in early April-ish 2008], in perspective that doesn't seem like TOO bad a rebound; I've read/heard of many people who gain back more than they lost when doing a major change!)
So I'm just glad I got out and perhaps I'm being too hard on myself. On that weight point, I think I was 242.6 pounds this morning and am having trouble getting back on the weight loss track and it's a little frustrating! I'd love to be down to 200 pounds (I haven't been that 'light' since college; I was around 180 when i graduated high school and had much less broad shoulders, etc. so it isn't ALL fat!) before the end of 2010, but at this rate it's seeming less and less likely... However, if I can start averaging a pound a week NOW I could still make that goal!
As for giving blood, I just texted DW that I think I'll hold off and skip this drive; hopefully she didn't already make appointments for us! :fingerscrossed:

Ok, I feel sooo irresponsible and I've gotta pray I dont get fired:headbrickwall:
I called in sick:oweye: never a good move the 1st day back after vacation....I cant explain what came over me...Well, I'm in pain, but nothing I cant handle..I'm elevating my legs and feet, hate being swollen..wouldnt have had a way to elevate at work, I dont think. Have a split shift Fri & Sat so thats not bad...But, like I've mentioned, I've been so emotional..As much as I hurt walking around the grocery store today, it had to be done..When I got home, I started cry, and havent stopped:silly: it's been about 2 hrs now...I feel drained and I dont know why...Am I gonna feel this way after every race?
I guess I could blame it on my thyroid, or being that time of the month.
But yet, after all of this, I cant wait for the next race:grin: Wish I could do the Wine & Dine in Oct.
Of course if I get fired, i wont be doing much of anything.

Best of luck, Jen! Are you stretching plenty? I felt pretty good on Sunday after the race, but Monday I was so stiff all over! Besides the massage, I tried to stretch regularly and sat in the sauna for about 15 minutes. I think it helped, as Tuesday I was much better.

Okay, I think I am finally ready to post a race report. Like most everything else I post, it will be overly detailed and wordy.
I will have to back up momentarily to the expo, just because it gave me a boost of confidence that I didn't expect. I guess I expected everyone in the race to be fit, muscular, young, racing maniacs where I would feel totally out of place. But in the expo I only saw normal women walking around--mothers, aunts, professional working women of all ages and sizes. So, I thought, "I can do this!"
Okay, so on to the actual race, right?! The alarm was set for 3 am (we set three alarms, as I'd heard enough stories of alarms malfunctioning race morning). I popped right up and felt as if I hadn't been asleep at all. Got dressed, ate some breakfast, and caught the bus around 3:50. My sister was not happy about the early hour, or about the fact that we had to catch the bus by 4 am, or be in our corrals by 5:30am. We made it to the finish line (that's where they dropped us off, though we could've walked from OKW to the starting line--it was closer) and found Carrie, Jen, Laura, and Scott. (Lisa had already made her way through bag check.) We stood around and chatted a while, then checked our bags, and walked what seemed to be a mile or two to the start corrals.
Despite all the grumblings about not liking being forced to stand in the corrals so early, my sister said she wanted to get in the corral and “get it over with” so we split and headed for our respective corrals (she was in A and I was in B). “A” started right at 6 am; “B” started 7 minutes later. I had created a new playlist on my iPod for the race, put it on shuffle, and by a strange twist, had “Going the Distance” from the Rocky soundtrack be my first song. I took it as a sign. I was going to finish!
I’m not sure why, but I felt I couldn’t get in a comfortable groove at first. I didn’t feel my pace was too fast or too slow—it just didn’t feel right. I think it is because when I train, I warm up by speed walking for several minutes, then start running from the walk, not from a standstill. The first mile sign came up around 13:30 miles—I was feeling good and on a great pace! The sun started coming up in the second mile, along World Drive. My plan had been run intervals of 3, 2, 2, and 3.1 miles, with 1 mile walking intervals. I was disappointed to start feeling acute weakness in my left ITB around the end of the 2nd mile/start of the 3rd mile. I didn’t understand why I had the knee pain/weakness; as of late during my training runs I had hip/butt pain, but not the knee issues, and certainly not that soon into the run. Looking back now, it must have been because of an on/off ramp—those “hills” always get me.
Anyway, I so I walked the 4th mile and starting running again somewhere around the T&TC. There was a pretty good “hill” down and back up to go under the roadway; I decided walking it would be smart. I was proud of myself that I knew I should back off, and actually did it. Anyway, I was running again by the time I entered MagicKingdom.
It was great to see Laura there on Main Street. I slapped her a high-five. I was awesome to be running through the MagicKingdom. My sister noticed the pick-me-up it gave her, too. I saw a character (I think it was Clarabelle Cow) in Frontierland with no line and stopped for a picture (yes, I had that disposable camera from the swag bag in my pocket. I figured, this is my first half, and I have a chance to document it without having to worry about damaging or losing my digital camera. So I stuck it in my pocket). I stopped also to have a pic with Pinocchio (they had parade floats set up in the backstage area with characters around them).
I think it was as I was stopping in the port-o-pots shortly after that that I realized my injury was really a blessing. It was the first time I was thankful for my injury. If it weren’t for the fact that I had a nagging injury that for the life of me I didn’t know why I couldn’t shake, I would not have been enjoying the race as I did. If I didn’t have an injury, instead of my goal being just to finish the race, I would’ve set some time goal and then beaten myself up to achieve it, but really not even be completely satisfied if I had achieved it. Because of the injury, I gave myself permission to walk when I needed it, permission to stop and visit characters--permission to use the toilet! I allowed myself to just have fun.
Well, that was an eye-opener. I was supposed to have been walking the 7th mile, but I kept forgetting. I officially started running again in the 8th, but because my knee kept screaming at me, I slowed to a walk again. In the 8th and 9th miles I tried running, but I think I ended up walking more. Oh well. I was amazed to keep glancing at my watch and see I was maintaining a pretty good pace anyway.
My sister talked about the monotony or let down of the miles between MK and Epcot. I did notice it, but didn’t feel it was hard to keep going or pushing myself. She also despised mile 10—a series of ups and downs through on and off ramps approaching Epcot. Because of the hills, I basically made up my mind to just walk until I actually reached Epcot. I knew I wanted to finish running.
Into Epcot and time to start running again. I wasn’t able to go very fast as my knee just wouldn’t let me. But it was fun to see some of the topiaries for F&G. Exiting Epcot was the mile marker for 13. Just around the bend, and before the finish, was a gospel choir. Nice touch. As I approached the finish, I could hear my sister yelling for me. I know I wasn’t to the finish yet, but I started pumping my fists in the air. I was finishing the race the way I started: with music from Rocky. (This time it was the Rocky theme, “Gonna Fly Now.”) I had made it for my first half marathon.
I stopped off at the medical tent and got some ice for my ITB. Despite miles of plastic wrap, it wouldn’t actually stay in place, so I had to walk holding it to my knee. My sister met me for official photos, then we met up with Carrie. I got a message that Lisa had crossed (but we missed seeing her). I hadn’t received a message about Jen in a while and was getting a little worried. We decided to head back towards the finish line to see if people were still crossing. Just as we were approaching it, I got a message: Jen’d crossed! We found an open spot along the fence and waited to see her coming up with her medal. I was so proud!

I felt good after; if I kept my leg straight at the knee when I walked, I didn’t have any pain. We headed to AK for the afternoon, wearing our medals. Monday, however, I was sore just about everywhere. Ugh. Everytime I sat down, I would get stiff again. Getting up, I felt as if I were learning to walk all over again. We had massages at SSR and I found I was tight in areas I didn’t even know about. Tuesday morning I was feeling better and went running for a little while. I felt good and thought I was running fast, like maybe 11:30 min mile (which is fast for me these days). Turns out I ran over 2.5 miles at just over a 10 min mile pace. Wow!
Despite the miles of pain, I had an absolute blast. I really loved the race. The course was great: lots of characters and only one hairpin turn that I could remember (those really did me in during ToT). I had hoped to be able to come in under 3 hours, and even with walking at least 5 miles (but I think longer), I averaged under a 13 minute mile! Most of all, I’m so glad that I enjoyed it—all of it—all 13.1 miles. I think I’ve found my favorite distance! I’m really hoping to do the DLR half-marathon in September. I’d love to the half during marathon weekend in January, if I can get away from work, as it looks like the course is the same.

OK, basically, I ran and felt good, but I could not get myself any faster. Had a ton of fun, though. Morecharacters adn entertainment than last year. puts marathon stuff to shame!
My ASI pix suck. 4 women cut me off outside teh castle and stopped dead. I was annoyed. the bike medic next to me was a bit more annoyed. :scared07: Downhill on a bike in the crowd and 4 people stop dead.
Will try to get more detail this weekend. Usually, there's something I need to journal to put things in perspective or becuase I was so thirilled. I had fun, but no great stories to tell. Oh, this was the first half I have doen completly solo, though. Cool!

Pre-race, me and my sister in matching shirts/shorts (she made the shirts):

The quote reads, "A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost."
We were under-prepared for the cold. We found throw-away gloves at the expo, but I needed something to cover my ears, and my sis decided at 7:30pm Saturday night she needed something to cover her legs. She bought a pair (well, it had three socks in the pack) of socks at "Little Miss Mismatched" in DTD. She wore two as socks, and I wore the third as an earwarmer.
On the course:
Approaching the finish:

DG--I loved the comment about sharing with the team. It's always great to be reminded we are a team. I feel like I share in everyone's running and you all share in mine.
Carrie--I'm not sure my sis will be chomping at the bit to vacation in WDW with me, but she did really enjoy AK. She said she liked it because it wasn't about the characters, but had animals and trees. I do think she liked AKL, too (we ate at Sanaa on Monday). She did really enjoy the race and getting to run through the parks.

Laura, no problem, thank you so much for keeping Scott company...So glad we finally got to meet.
I think part of my problem today is, on the last day of most WDW vacations, I get, what I call 'last day funk' Being DVC I dont get it as often as I used to, as I always have a trip in the works...I sure didnt get it in January, sure my engagement trip was coming to an end, but I knew in less than 5 weeks I'd be back.

MM, GREAT report. Sorry though, you don't get the prize for longest race report--I think I proudly hold that title with my Rehoboth report, vol 1, 2, and 3. ;) I love RRs!! You can make it as long as you want. Thanks for the pics too. Oh, and as Nono and I will testify too--that course SUCKS for ITB issues. All the uneven ramps is terribly hard on the ITB. I think you rocked it time wise to have walked as much as you did. Wow, I am very very impressed indeed. I hear ya' on the enjoying the race thing. One day I think I am going to go down there and totally goof off. Thinking that my Goofy series I will allow myself time to really enjoy the HM portion. Tell your sister we are so happy to have her on our Team. :) :goodvibes:
Carrie, first HM solo!! :thumbsup2: So more course entertainment than the Marathon, hey? Wow, maybe the Princess race will be the new premier race down there. Makes me wonder what they will do for W & D. Not that I can anyway justify paying $135 for a HM. Oh wait, think I am doing that with Goofy. Crap. :oweye: Congrats on yet another endurance race!! :)
MM -- great race report! (if a little brief) The way Carrie, Rozzie and I write race reports, you'd think we were paid by the word. ;)
Well, tapering is going well I guess. I'm dead dog tired today because I've been up since 3:30 a.m. because they are rebuilding our beach 24 hrs a day, apparently! Wind finally starting to come from the East, so I got to hear all the heavy equipment, even through closed windows. Ugh.

Well the majority of 5Ks barely give you a $3 Hanes cotton tshirt--so you should feel happy you got something to wear around your neck! ;) If you want a metal medal then sign up for the Princess next year. I think you and Jigger would make a great team and I know you both would have a blast doing it together. :)
Actually enjoying my "active recovery do whatever I want" weeks. This week I might make 10 miles total. Last night did 4, very nice weather and the birds were all super musical with spring in the air. The achilees did start talking on the hills, so I am taking today and Sat off. Ordered Scott and I several core training DVDS from McMillian Running. (that calculator guy a lot of us use) Can't wait to dive into them. Also ordered the famous Coach Jack Daniels (not the whiskey LOL) lectures on the science of running. Talks about how important iron is, training cycles, how to know your max mileage, etc. Very neat and informative stuff.

I feel like making a tee shirt that says, my friends went to the Princess Half marathon and all I got was this rubber UP medal for the 5k! (on Marathon Weekend).
Hey CB, I did a 5k a few months ago and all I got was a flat beer and a cold bowl of grits. I do like the shirt idea though.

Thanks, everyone!
Mr. Roz--If you all do the Derby Festival, I'll have to look into coming up to cheer you all on. I'm doing the mini (which is a half) this April, and I think the first 8 miles or so are the same. I think I'm going to adopt the attitude of my sister--unless I really, really like the race, I don't forsee myself running the same one twice. I am still counting on the bourbon chase! :thumbsup2:
CB--My sister said the same thing Roz and Mr. Roz said about the 5K "medalions" when I told her how disappointed I was in the ones for the Princess. I feel like the one for ToT was at least metal, but I could be remembering incorrectly. After running I believe too much of my blood is shunted away from my brain. :silly:
I think I have decided that the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville will be my first marathon. It is Dec 12, I believe. I'm a little concerned about the time requirement of 6 hours. I'm also hoping I can encourage some people to come down and cheer me on. I'm also looking to train for it longer and more slowly (sort of adapting something I read in Runners World to help minimize injuries).
I ran another 2.5 miles yesterday here in VB. Managed to average 10:50 min mile even running into a strong wind. :oweye: Where are these times coming from all the sudden?

MM. great report & pics! Love the quote on your shirts!!!
Mr Flash finally found another race he was interested in...a 10 mile pub run on St Pats day :rotfl2: The first stretch is about 2 miles, stop at a pub for some beer, run to the next one, stop for some beer..... :biggulp: All I could think of was those last few pubs better be really close together! I'd be running full speed just to get to the bathroom after all those beers:silly: Unfortunately, once again, life gets in the way! I have to run a flower sale fundraiser that whole day & science fair is that night at the school....can't really show up to those after a "few beers"!

Last night did 4, very nice weather and the birds were all super musical with spring in the air. The achilees did start talking on the hills, so I am taking today and Sat off.
:scratchchin: Maybe I'm starting to channel you; we had great weather again and (partly at DW's suggestion!) I went out and ran 3.47 (I think; log is at home) miles @ 11:13 pace. i did walk some of it; my shines were a little ehhh yesterday [I also did my regular Tues & Thursday 30 min. walk w/ my buddy @ work around 2 PM] and afterwords and this morning my lower back + shines are complaining a bit. So, today became a rest day! We'll see about tomorrow; hoping to an hour on the ellip (they are predicting rain) if I feel up to it. :fingerscrossed:
In other news, I got a VM from the Red Cross last night and apparently they think I am signed up to donate on Saturday. :scared07: I've read some things that say as long as it is 7 - 10 days before compeating donating shouldn't interfere with athletics. So I'm still on the fence, but at this second I'm leaning twoard just doing it... I dunno, wouldn't be the first stupid thing I've done in my life if it does indead back fire!!! :rotfl2: Besides, if my muscles need a break at the moment maybe now would in fact be a good time for a quick "oil change". :silly: At least it would be for a good cause; maybe someone will urgently need a unit of B+ in the near future. :thumbsup2:

Oh yeah, in other news:
We did NOT get grandfathered vacation days from work. :( So, I only get 2 weeks + co. holidays and 2 "floats"; starting in May 2011 my rate will go up to 15 vacation / year, BUT since it's a continues accrual basis it'll take time to build up a bit before I can use it.
That said, I scheduled Sept. 17th, 2010 off w/ my boss and am planning on going to Dayton, OH that day... ;) Just trying to decide what to enter:
Take it easy and do the 5k?
Do the 10k despite already being registered for what I was contemplating being my first a month later on 10/10/10?
Through caution to the wind and try for the half??? :scared07:
Part of me wants to go for the 13.1; partly to prove I can do it (like so many other Peacocks have done or exceeded). BUT, another part of me doesn't like the idea of running for 2+ hours (or MUCH longer depending on how much I walk!) straight or the training to lead up to it. :oweye: I've been tinkering with a possible training plan to build up to that distance, but I'm not sure I'm willing to commit yet...

My manager said now that they hired 3 new night people, she asked me if i wanted a few day shifts:yahoo: So now I only have 2 12-9 shifts...the other 3 are 8-5.
I'm feeling better today, emotionally...Physically I feel sleepy, lol...And my toe is still sore, but no big deal, and just some general achyness...Going crazy not walking or getting on tredmill:silly:
Ok, so, once I heal, I want to start training again, even though right now i dont have anything to train for:scratchchin: I have 6 mile walk for charity in June, I dont need to train for that.
Will train eventually for the OUC HOWEVER! I need suggestions...I want a plan for a walk/run combo or a running for beginners plan.
Any ideas on what to follow?

DG, I love the idea of you going for a HM!! Your plan though might cause some problems. You need scale back weeks, like one weekend do 8, next 6, then 8, 10, then 6. This allows your body to recover--anything else invites injury. There are lots of beginning HM plans out there. If I was not on my phone I would paste some. Take a peak at a few and you will see how they kinda flow. You also need to be running about 3 days a week at least.

Scale back and forth: CHECK; I'll look at other training plans that incorporate this! Injury invitations = BAD; too many Peacocks have had them lately; don't want to add to the count! :silly:
For meeting 3 days a week, would my planned 3.25 each on Mon & Thur count for two of them? (plus hopefully my 15 min. TM on Tue & Fri will get at least a LITTLE credit for something... ;))

The "Half Marathon Training Schedule for Runners and Walkers" training schedule looks like an interesting place to start rethinking from. My first thought is swap his Sunday distances for my first draft sat. ones and POOF, new plan! :D OK, maybe that's over-simplifying, but it allows for me incorporating my off-day cross-training and gives 30 minute runs on 2 weekdays, like I want!!!

Athena, have you done the couch to 5K from start to finish? It will help you build a base to run for 30 minutes straight. I think week 6 is when you run for 20 minutes . It is what I started on and it lead to a natural progression into longer runs.
I think that if you do that, it will put you in late May with a good start. From that build up to about 20-30 miles a week for a few months, then work your way up to a little more miles then start a half mile plan that will put you right into the OUC.
IMO,Right now your plan should be to build a consistant base of mileage per week.
YOu can do it!

Jen here is the link to what Scott was talking about. This May will make my 2 year anniversary of my graduation from C25K (Couch to 5K). I could not run 10 min straight without gasping, and in 2 years I have built up to running a 4:15 marathon. If I can do it, anybody can do it!! :thumbsup2: Just remember slow and steady, this program gently guides you into running to avoid injuries and builds confidence every week. I was amazed how easy it was to make a habit, and how my body responded to the gradual increase in run/walk intervals. Not saying that you have to transition to straight running, but this may be something you may want to do for fitness to prepare for training. Also that Galloway plan is all walk/run intervals, there is nothing that has you running for 30 min's, he believes in run walk intevals, or walk/run intevals. The "Galloway" method is another term for walk/running. Anyway to put it on, you can do some running. Just take it nice and slow and allow your body to get adjusted.
Here is the Galloway intervals for taken from DG's link
7. Run-walk-run ratio should correspond to the pace used.
8 min/mi—run 4 min/walk 35 seconds)
9 min/mi— 4 min run-1 min walk
10 min/mi—-3-1
11 min/mi—2:30-1
12 min/mi—-2- 1
13 min/mi—-1-1
14 min/mi—30 sec run/30 sec walk
15 min/mi—30 sec/45 sec
16 min/mi—30 sec/60 sec
This is the Couch to 5K Program Scott mentioned...

Well, I have a place to stay over DLR half marathon weekend. I have a VGC studio for Friday night, am waitlisted for Saturday and Sunday, but have Disneyland Hotel booked for those two nights on the race cash discount.
Now I just have to register for the race!
DG--the whole thing that Roz is talking about about scaling back every fourth week was something new to me that my sister taught me about this past week (I think my sister said something like 40%, then going back to the previous week's distances and start increasing from there). But, then again, I didn't really train appropriately for this last HM.
I think traditionally most running plans increase milage around 10% each week. But I read in Runners World that that may even be too much and that some running program (I don't remember all the specifics--sorry) was increasing by like 1% (well, it may have been a little more, but 1% sticks in my head) and 97% of runners on that training schedule stayed injury free. So I plan on incorporating idea that into my marathon training: start training now for a Dec marathon using a sort of stretched-out 20 week schedule. I really only have 40 weeks between now and then, but am planning on going to Africa in June for a 3 week or so mission trip, so I'm not sure how that will affect things.
Jen--when I started running, I used a graduated walk/run interval schedule. I think that first week I would walk 6 minutes then run (very slowly, but I was proud I was moving!) for one minute. I did that three times, 3x that week. The next week I increased my running by one minute and decreased my walking by one minute, and so forth. By the end of eight weeks, I ran an entire 5K! I was so proud. You have a good walking base established; I started from nothing. You can do it! :cheerleader:
And I agree with Gail--It is incredible that you set out to walk 13.1 miles, trained for it, and saw it through to the finish! Wear that medal proudly, girl! You earned! :love30:

There is also the matter of the price difference to run the 5k vs the half. (That diff pays for a lot of rhinestones) !!!!!!!!!I'm too cheap to pay the price.

Jen - Before 3/28/2009, I hadn't run at all since high school and even then I was never that serious or went longer than 2 miles. HOWEVER, starting in April 2008 I built up a base on my elliptical trainer and that helped me make the transition. I agree 100% with what others are saying- transition to running (done slower) should be easy from a solid walking base!!! :thumbsup2:

Jen, the C25K will only train you up to 3 miles. So you will need to go with a Half Marathon training program just like you did for the Princess. Most plans are about 18 weeks or so. Galloway has several half marathon training programs, also John Bingham (the penguin, author of the plan you did for Princess) has plans for walk run, run walk too. There are several several easy to follow plans out there. Scott and I were saying if you want to try running more, do the C25K for fitness. If you think that might be too much running, do a walk run plan. Right now the most important thing you can do is stay with it. Build on the base you have now. Get a blank calendar and write down what you are going to do for the month. Like say on M, W, F, I will walk/run 3 miles. On Sat, I will do 4 miles. And so on. Sign up for local races, 10ks, 5Ks to keep you motivated this spring. Buy some running fitness books. Galloway on Running is a great beginning one, let me see if I can find him on Amazon. I reference one of his books all the time. It has everything in there, injury prevention, how to ice, when to rest. Very simple reading too....Amazon.com: Galloway's Book on Running (9780936070278): Jeff Galloway: Books This is the exact book I have. He teaches walk/run ratios in all his plans, and there are several training plans for half marathons in back of book.
DG, no worries, what does dinner take, like 1 hour? We have the whole weekend. Just make plans for some celebrating for Sat night. Don't worry, you won't be the only ones not drinking. Gails DH does not drink. But we will have a super Peacock toast!! Our largest yet!!!! Now we need to get Lisa on board, I know she was interested earlier and was still thinking. Mmmn. :scratchchin:

I also wanted to ask, when you did the c25k, did you just follow the schedule on the website, or did you pay the $20? Whats the $20 get you? Sorry if I sound cheap, lol.

DG, it's ok, we can always meet up otherwise! I'm not a big carb person the night before either. In fact, ask the Rehoboth Peacocks -- I'll be combing Dayton for a Thai or Korean place for lunch on Friday!:eating: :D It's my secret fuel.
We didn't try it, but DW & I were thinking about going here: http://www.thai9restaurant.com/Main.html last year when we went to wrigth Pat on a pleasure trip (DW also stopped by the community college in Dayton for a test; she's taking online classes to add an associates degree as a follow up to her BS...)

All that talk about running with a Kenyan (I'll be going to Tanzania, actually) reminds me of the magnet my sis got at the race expo. One More Mile had all this gear with various sayings on them. She really liked the one, "In my dreams, I am a Kenyan." I liked many of them, but think "Running is a mental sport and we are all insane" was one of my favorites.
I really identified with the "I know, I know--I said I'd never do this again."
I also liked the "You know you're a runner when" list. My favorite was "You consider gels a food group." My sister liked "You can say fartlek without laughing" because when she would teach speed intervals to her students, they would start snickering.
Now that I'm back from WDW, I just want to sit around and mope (and eat). I need to get off my (expanding) butt and run!

Just signed up for another race! On Aug. 7, 2010 (4 years after I proposed on 8/7/06 - yeah, another number sequence... [Geek! :silly:]) DW is doing her first 5k and I'm joining her for the first 3 miles (for the last tenth I'm pre-approved to throw the hammer if I want. ;)).
She is going to start C25K April 1 but take it at half pace [16 weeks total] 3 days a week while still during Curves 3 alternating days a week, with Sundays as rest days. I'm proud of her and I thought I'd share that there is another Peacock sprouting feathers!!! {She even approved this message. :thumbsup2:}

Jen, the C25K is good for something to do right now, but what did you decide on a Half Marathon training program??? I would go ahead and get one picked out and start reviewing. That Galloway book is only $12 on Amazon I linked to you, also you can get Binghams book on Amazon for about $10 and it has his training programs at back of book.
Oh one more thing. We are registered!! USAF meet the Peacocks!! ;)

I was talking to my dad about relays tonight. He would LOVE to do one with the group, but if he's coaching next fall (my dad has been coaching track and cross country again the last few years in case I hadn't mentioned that; when he first retired from teaching he didn't coach for 2 or 3 years IIRC) my parents probably won't be able to do the Bourbon Chase in 2011... :( BUT, if the Team wants to do one in July or August he is definitely interested! Also, it was "Hood to Coast" he was saying a year or two ago that he'd LOVE to try someday. So, if people don't have their hearts set on the BC in Oct. 2011 and we pick other (summer) dates instead I can most likely get three people in for a relay! (Me, my mom, and my dad) I started glancing at this website for ideas: http://www.runningrelays.com/complete_list.htm

RIVER TO SEA RELAY
Saturday - July 31, 201x
Welcome to the 201x River to Sea Relay, the 1xth annual team adventure race run across New Jersey. Beginning in Milford on the Delaware River and ending on the beach in Manasquan, R2C15 is a physically and mentally challenging endurance event.
Each team consists of 7 runners who will each run 2 legs of the 92 mile relay (we will also offer a non-competitive 72 mile version), which travels through 34 towns in Hunterdon, Mercer, Somerset, Middlesex and Monmouth counties.
Here is the site:
http://oymp.net/r2c/welcometor2c.htm
I didn't ask my parents about this yet since I only found it a few minutes ago, but I thought I'd throw it out here and check for nibbles... If I do this one I probably would NOT do the Bourbon Chase the same year though. (Also, I copied info. from the 2010 site but do NOT plan to try a long relay until 2011!!!)

OUC Half Marathon in Orlando first weekend in Dec 2010. There is no info yet, but I think we are all safe that it will be that weekend--it's the 33rd, or 32nd year of the race. The RD emailed me and said it has always been held on first weekend of Dec. Looks like a great race--tech shirt, medal, beer at end, for only $45 or so. (probably a increase this year....) They had 2500 or so runners last year, and the course goes through some lakefront areas of Downtown Orlando. Looks neat. :D There is a bunch of us going and making a week of it at WDW. Maybe I should email the RD and see when registration might open up...:fingerscrossed:

Nono, when do you leave? What are you wearing? What is the weather going to be like? Details details! :)
Oh, I'm so just not ready! I feel OK ('cept for a sore throat, which I'm hoping is just taper woes). I haven't really checked the weather yet, so I'm not sure what to pack. Plan on panicking later tonight and then will start to pack. We leave Thursday in the morning. It's a 1.5 hr ferry ride, then a 4.5 hr drive there. The dog is going with us, as the kennel is closed. The hotel no longer accepts dogs, but since we booked awhile ago, she's grandfathered in...Oh she had better BEHAVE!
I think my plan is to run in shorts and a long sleeved shirt with the Peacock singlet over it. Hat and gloves and rain gear (a few days ago it was showing showers possible). I have to remember to cut up some kinesio tape and put it in my arm pocket...haven't planned nutrition, but know where a WAWA is so I can pick up my soft pretzel. :D
Gosh, I should really get organized! :embarassed:

Princess Half Marathon
Last year, the race time was 7am with daylight savings thrown in for good measure. This year, the race organizers must have said, well they did okay with that. Let’s just start the race at 6am; they can run it with no beauty sleep! I woke at 2:25am since I needed to walk to the Polynesian from SOG to board the bus. I got ready earlier than expected but since I did not really know what to expect, I went ahead and left.
Lucky me, I immediately came across a very nice couple running the Princess together! The young woman had convinced her military MP husband to join her in the race. He had two weeks notice and he was nervous of the distance. We teased all the way to the Poly and hopped right on board the bus with no problems. A real funny occurrence was that our bus driver got lost and pulled us right into the middle of Reunion Arena. A volunteer admonished him but said, “Go ahead and let the runners out now!!” Talk about curbside service, lol! I stayed with my couple for a bit after we arrived and then I went in search of Carrie and any other Peacocks. I was standing around near the W tent probably looking a bit forlorn when Lucky Me again heard my name being called. It was Nicole, a very nice Wisher that I met at a tea I attended at GF on Saturday afternoon!!! She called me over to join her small group of Wishers so I did! I stayed with them and unfortunately, Carrie never did catch up with us before the race. :boohoohoo:
Nicole and I were in the same corral. I really enjoyed visiting with her prior to the race. She is a lot faster than me so I knew I would be running my own race when we got going. Like January, we had several staggered starts and they actually set off the fireworks for each group which impressed me! I got to start at 6:14am and believe me, the bag I brought for warmth was not enough! Luckily, the weather overall was nice and it warmed up well.
I ran the entire race in a run one minute, walk two minute pace. I was very proud of that! My mom had decided to cheer at the Poly and at the finish line. I was so happy to see Laura at the MK though and I gave her a big hug! I also found Mom at the Poly and jumped across the road to see and hug her. She was my support team also, handing off a protein bar to me so I would not have to carry so much. :eating:
It was at about 9.5 miles that I suddenly had a big shock by realizing that I had never taken my pain med that I usually would take at Mile 7. I knew my pain levels had gone up some but I was having such a good time I did not remember at all. Therefore, I had to really do a lot of positive self talk to get through to the end of the race with any kind of pace at all. I forced myself to stick with the run 1 walk 2 pacing but my speed toward the end definitely fell off. I am still very proud that it is my fastest Half Marathon at Disney to date at 3:11:21. :yahoo:
I saw the young couple again from that morning right as I was entering EPCOT and they did great together! Along the way, I saw a blue man (even his skin was painted), a bright green frog (looking for a princess kiss, lol) and a couple dressed alike in black tights with red skirt (the guy was wearing a micro-mini red skirt). I heard a girl call out to him, “Hey, you are rocking that skirt!” :scared07:
Mom and I missed each other at the finish so just seconds after I crossed the finish line, I pulled my phone out to call my mom and I had already answered a phone call from Rick. He said he had been following the race on the web and had known exactly when I crossed the finish line!! I would love to know more about how that worked! It was very exciting to hear from him right as I finished like that!! Rozzie said something very similar to this so please describe it.
I did talk to Mom a couple of minutes later and she sounded very tired and a little upset that she had missed me. I was very concerned that she had overdone it and so I did not try to find everyone but instead I got her on the Poly bus and headed back to SOG right away. I definitely wish I had been able to meet up with the Peacocks after the race but we did do a lot of congratulatory text messaging and MM and her sister met up with Mom and me for a few minutes in AK right before our Yak n Yeti ressie. They looked awesome after the race.
Oh, and my bib is 5972. I didn’t wait for a medal picture either because mom was outside in the arena. Hey, you can see the frog in one of my pictures so he must have finished in the same timeline as me, lol! The sign about kissing a Princess was on his back!

Quick RR. Decided at last minute to do this hilly 10K this morning. I have not run past 4.5 miles since NOLA. Wanted to do it as a fitness test, see how out of shape I am since it is a tough course. Lots of hills, and about 8 sharp turns. Went out last night totally at ease, saw Avatar and drank beer with Scott and friends. Got up after "nap" of a night, warmed up a mile, stretched then ran.....A PR!! 53:40. :D Might I add the longest 6.2 miles off my life! I am OUT of SHAPE on hills. -------
Personally, I was planning to go out for about 4.5 miles today. Got to about 2 and my left lower inner leg (half calf, half shin?) started really bothering me. Not bloody murder pain, but enough to get my attention. So, when it came back after two walk breaks I diverted and came home with only 3.29 miles total. I went out WAY too fast :oweye: and I'm sure that also contributed to the walking. Averaged 11:48 pace. Sigh...
Oh well. Don't plan to run outside again until after my indoor tri in 8 days anyhow, try and figure it out then. I actually felt pretty good on the 'mill yesterday morning.
 But something just occurred to me- I went for a 30 min. walk Friday afternoon w/ my friend @ work. I was wearing an old pair of New Balance cross-trainers I have been keeping under my desk. Could there be a correlation? I'll have to keep an eye on that to watch for a pattern. There is a decent hills and several curves, but it was a fairly slow and therefore short WALK. Could that really make a difference? :confused24:
Ordered a new pair of shoes last night- Brooks Adrenaline 9s on clearance for $45.80 out the door, free shipping! :woohoodance: Maybe I should use those and my 'new' [Christmas, but only worn a few times so far] Asics for running outside and take my old Asics (about 200 miles on 'em) to work for my ~twice weekly walks? :scratchchin: Do the 'pro Peacocks' have any thoughts?

Thinking of Nono today and hoping she got to feeling better before the gun went off. :fingerscrossed:
Today is Scott and I's 12 year anniversary. We had planned for quite a while to run 12 miles today in honor of every year--but after the toughness of yesterdays 10K we are being lazy in rainy weather. Went to our favorite bkfast place with a flask of Bailey's this morning. (it's a BYOB type of place...) Going to watch Princess and the Frog later on and hang out with all the dogs. Perfect type of day. :)

Happy 12th Anniversary to an awesome couple of PEACOCKS!!!!
HOLY CRAP!
What a day! 4:26:21. If I could have run my former time, I'd have been in 9th place for my age group. Still got 23rd...rough day.
So, short story is that you can really run a marathon on 1 pretzel nub, 1/2 of clif shot bar, and 2 coconut waters. Seriously.
TMI zone:
I battled barfing, potential other end issues, and muscus deciding to hang out on my lungs....but it was OK. Not the race I wanted but totally cool. :thumbsup2:
So, many lessons learned, but the biggest is that apparently, I have a (formerly undetected) emotional attachment to Tom Petty's American Girl. Who knew? DJ at mi 25 was playing it and I was all happy 'cause it is a good song with a good beat...and then burst into tears. Completely uncontrollable. Ran it in that way...lots of very young kids working the chute...freaking out on me! "Ma'am you OK???"" Over and over. :)
For the 50 staters out there, this is the VA race to run! Beach party with beer all afternoon...dogs, kids, friends allowed! Anyone who decides to run this one, I'll come back and do it again anytime! Maybe next time, I won't even be sick. :p

Now I've got a soar throat, headache, sinus congestion, and feel a little dizzy this morning. Heading upstairs in a few to do 2 miles on the TM then back downstairs for a little slideboarding. My toes were too sore still yesterday to start my workouts for the week, so I'm doing a little less than planned. I feel fine, just the two toes -- my index toe and middle toe (if they correlate to fingers) on my left side had the hell banged out of them. I've kinesio taped them, but will run barefoot on the TM, and then try to shoe up for the slideboarding.
I still have this nagging head cold, but did get a nap today! YEA! I am hoping for all systems go for Sunday. We'll see...

OH!!! I can so empathize with you on getting the hell banged out of your toes, nono! Even in my size 11 shoes, it still happens a bit. If the toenail feels springy at all, then there likely is a blister under the toenail. You can take a clean pin and pop the side or top right under the nail to release the fluid and it will feel awesome in comparison, lol! :D

nono- GL with Sunday; :cheerleader: not sure when you'll be on 'tween now and then! As soon as my funky "indoor tri" ends Sunday I'll be thinking about you. :thumbsup2: My 60 minutes (+ 15 for transitions) is nothing compared to 26.2 two weekend in a row!!! :silly:
Thankfully my cold is clearing up [though not gone yet]; I went for our typical twice weekly 1.49 mile walk (averaged just under 18 min/mile pace) in the office's vicinity [finally brought my Garmin out of curiosity; wasn't sure what distance we have been doing] yesterday w/ my co-worker friend {wore my Asics and shines feel fine today, hmmm :scratchchin:} and did 30 min. on the ellip today + plan another 30 on it Saturday. So I think I'm all systems go; maybe not 100%, but should be good enough! My main goal: Finish my first triathlon (abnormal a format as it may be)! Goal #2- end up in the top 50%. Anything beyond that is gravy. :D I have no idea how many people are in it and I don't even know what heat I'm in yet; sometime between 7 AM and 8 AM most likely, there were 4 slots I got offered last night in a reply to an email I sent Thursday morning. Supposedly I was sent an e-mail Wednesday asking when I wanted to go, but I never got it. Oh well; hopefully I'll have a response and firm time tonight! :fingerscrossed:

Just got in from our big Local 10k, The Azalea Trail Run. It is not a true "trail" run but is called that because all of the Azaleas are in bloom this time of year. They are all throughout the course and is very beautiful. Huge turnout this year. There must have been over 4000 runners this year. It also included a 5K which contributed to the crowd.
I did not have any great expectations today since I ran a 51 minute 10K just last week. The weather was about the same, 60 and breezy. I did wake up and felt pretty good. Its true that you need about 1 day per mile to recover from your marathon completely. This is day 27. I guess NoNo will feel better sometime around May or June.
I felt good the entire race. I did however think I started too fast but wanted to push it. Hit mile 3 a little under 24 turned it up a little maintained smooth pace for the next mile then the 10 k and 5k merged. My 5 mile mark was the 2.1 mile mark for the 5K. It was like hands across America with all the walkers. I stayed to the left and got skinny to move through the crowd. The finish was as crowded as I have ever seen any race. Finished with time of 48:12. a 7:43 Pace. 30 seconds off a PR. but 3 minutes better than last week and 13 minutes better than the same race last year.
IT was a good time but I did miss my running buddy (Roz) very much.
Hope everyone has a fun time this weekend. Cant wait to hear great things from DG and Nono

I think I can help you out with that... ;)
I finished! Goal #1 solidly met; this Geek is now officially a triathlete. :thumbsup2: Official race results will come out tomorrow. On to the RR:
The Cleveland location seemed to draw a MUCH smaller crowd than I thought we would; apparently there were only four "waves", and since the website said there would be no more than 10 in a wave, that means 40 or fewer people? :confused24: Anyway:
Registration- arrived nice and early. Assigned #36. They didn't have any XXL shirts, despite it being an option (that I picked) during online registration! At least I got an XL, so it might fit.
Swim: Went out too fast; maybe the cold (still coughing some) was part of the problem; I only bagged 14 lengths in the allotted 10 minutes. I thought I got at least 16.5 during a training run I counted and timed a few weeks back. Oh well; DW was spectating and said I wasn't last in my group, so that's good at least!
First transition: I was timing 10 minutes from when they said "meet us in the hall in 10". I came out of the men's locker room in 10 minutes 6 seconds by my stopwatch (I hit lap after the swim). Turns out they apparently meant "We will have gone upstairs over a minute before that" based on what E said. Sooooo, I dashed up the stairs following the signs and grabbed a bike.
Bike: Did about 30 minutes; they let me and a couple others go for 1 minute longer than the rest since we started late. That was cool! BUT, the electronics weren't playing nicely on mine. We were told we had to keep it at or above 30 watts. OK, no prob. I hit that and then went beyond it; was cruising around 130-140 RPM and 11.8 to 12.2 MPH (which seemed WAYYYY to slow relative to my pedaling and what I had done at my local gym in the previous trainings I did) with typically 35-45 watts generated. :D Then the machine started saying I was doing 125 RPMs at 0 MPH and 0 watts? That just wasn't adding up... The bike did this several times, but since it started after we were more than halfway in they said I shouldn't switch bikes and they would credit me for 6 miles, one person even said they could do 6.2, but to be fair I accepted six since I wasn't sure I was truly going faster than "average". Then again, I don't know what happened in the other heats, er, waves...
Since I finished that extra minute I had 4 left to transition to the run. Quick safety stop in the bathroom while my butt and related areas started to regain feeling (itty-bitty spinning/racing style bike seats + generally non-bike riding Geek = numbness in training and today!) Got to my 'mill about 30 seconds before we were to start.
The run: I started at 4 MPH for the first minute, then up to 5 by two min. Started alternating 5 & 6 MPH. Two short (~1 min) walk breaks @ 2.5 MPH when I started feeling things cardio-wise [legs were fine]. Finished with a sprint :) and 1.64 miles in 20 minutes.
So, not exactly ideal, but I'm sure glad I did it!!!
DisneyGeek
03-28-2010, 12:24 PM
OK, I looked up my stats from my rec center bike training passes: distance 12 (miles?) in 36 min 37.7 seconds, so at that pace I should have had 9.82 miles in 30. Different style of bike on another day, 5.2 miles in 20 min, so that should have yielded at least 7.8. Both of those days I was doing around 100 to 110 RPM according to the bike, so if anything today should have been a LOT further. On March 7th, the day I did a full three event practice run, I didn't count laps and no instruments on the bike, but I only did 1.51 miles on the treadmill, so at least I did better than that today! :thumbsup2: I'll try and take solice in the fact that looking at stats from other locations in the Indoor Tri series, sounds like every's bike distances were WAYYY low at our site if 6 miles really was the average. :p
And DW took a few pics for me to share:

Since you can't see the back of my shirt in these, it was instead my Team Peacock tech shirt (that I wore for ToT) that I had on out of the water today. I was sportin' my feathers gang! :woohoodance:
Probably some typos in the above post and my previous one; sorry! Besides being my first Tri, it was also the longest race I've ever done; of the three 5ks I've done ToT took the longest with a 34:35 chip time; since the "exercise" portion of this was 60 minutes, it was nearly twice as long as the race that look me the longest before! :rotfl2:

Hey- now that the tri is over I am thinking about the new shoes I ordered last week. They came in a few days ago but I was intentionally NOT trying anything new this week. ;)
How do you guys usually decide what you think about new shoes, and how do you evalulate them to try and keep them returnable in case the verdict is NO? I got them from Running Warehouse... Short sting on a treadmill? Wait for dry weather and do a mile or so outside? Just curious! TIA :thumbsup2:

That is wicked crazy about that guy remembering me. If it is the same MM I am thinking of, I talked his ear off for about a hour around the HM point. ;)
DG, I would do short runs in them first. I don't test shoes on the TM since I don't train on the TM-but it would not hurt to see how they feel. I think you would know after 2-3 miles if they are going to be a total miss. Or at least I can anyway.
Speaking of shoes, I am trying to go lighter these days. Instead of ordering off of RW, we went over to MS to a running store there that carried several brands. This store was different than our local running stores as they had a TM with a video camera and would video your gait barefoot, also a computer to help. I really wanted to be able to feel several lighter weight shoes on before I committed. Scott did the videotaping, while they let me run down the road in a shoes I was trying out. Most stores here have a no outside policy when trying them out, so I give them major kudos for their service. :thumbsup2: Got Mizuno Wave Rider 13 (they went on big diet from 12's I have) now to rotate, then will be getting Precision's next for speedwork. Then hoping to step down to Speedstars or Zoots. Then on to Nike Lunar Racers. (hopefully by that time I will be 10 lbs lighter and are ready for the big change...)
As usual, not enough sleep post-marathon. Was very uncomfortable last night, but finally got to sleep around 2 a.m. Was dreading this morning, as I felt pretty lousy last night, compared to my other two finishes. However, coming down the stairs this morning wasn't as bad as last week, and otherwise I feel similar to last week's Monday. So, onward!
See, this is how crazy stunts are born. I think my recovery profile is fairly quick, so my week of no running is already starting to fade as a plan.
DG, regarding shoes, I can generally tell now by simply putting them on if they are going to work as a shoe for me. Try to analyze what the components are of a good shoe for you. There's several things I desire, but the top three are:
1. Low profile -- I just don't like a built up heel, so the flatter the profile, the happier my feet will be
2. Low volume -- The shoe interior can't be too "tall." I have low profile feet, including no insteps, so I just slosh around in high volume shoes.
3. Extremely flexible foreshoe -- I take a shoe on display and hold it vertically with its toe pointing down. I put the toe against the floor or other flat surface. If the shoe doesn't basically flex into an L shape, I won't even try it on. I am not comfortable in a shoe that isn't very flexible, so if I bought it, it wouldn't go into rotation much. One exception was a pair of Nike Air Pegasus I bought which I use for slideboarding, so I do have different criteria for different sports.
Now, I'm not saying these are the right things to look for in a shoe, just giving you examples of what some characteristics are in my case, so you can make your own list!
Once I figured out my "profile" I've been able to buy off the web with success, assuming the site does a good job with the description of the shoe. :thumbsup2: But, I'd say, always be open to new shoes: at random running stores, Dick's (my best shoes EVER are "low end" Nikes bought at Dicks), online, at running expos, etc. But then again, I have 6 active pair in rotation, so I'm a bit of a collector of good footwear. ;)
WTG NONO!!!! :rocker: :love30: Sooo cool about the guy remembering Rozzie's Team Peacock shirt....
It's getting bad -- I also recognized a guy on course (a race walker) and he figured out he saw me last at the LBI 18 mile race. I think I'm in a cult.

DG, I would do short runs in them first. I don't test shoes on the TM since I don't train on the TM-but it would not hurt to see how they feel. I think you would know after 2-3 miles if they are going to be a total miss. Or at least I can anyway.
So have you ever still returned them after a "real" 2-3 mile trial before, particularly with RW? I have mixed feelings about returning something that I've "used", even if it was lightly, but I also don't want to keep something that isn't right. That's why they have a return policy (with free shipping even!) after all, isn't it? I guess what I'm driving it is what do you think "Items need to be returned in new condition..." means?
Cool on the new store you found and GL on the shoe migration plan! :thumbsup2:

Hmmm, I gotta' get more shoes and practice finding which ones I like!

I can understand collections; I think my dad had 23+ pairs that he wore at some point during one of his peak seasons and kept for quite a while. Some that he just wouldn't get rid of because of a PR in one race or another. The pile in my parents bedroom was always amusing to me as a kid. I think at least once he had four different pairs of the same make/model active and he'd rotate them after marking w/ a Sharpie to tell them apart!
Anyway, thanks to U & Rozzie for the input!
You know, maybe I really should just try and get over my intimidation and start asking my dad for some more advice on this stuff as well since he is local and has, uh, a bit of experience with running type things... :oweye:

I'm obsessing over what my results for the Tri yesterday were; they haven't posted them yet and I want to know what happened, especially for the bike portion since the numbers sounded so out of whack, at least for me personally! ARGH... Patience is a virtue that apparently I've been lacking; I've probably gone to their page 20+ times in the last 5.5 hours. :p I think they are taunting me too- there are results up for another location that held and Indoor Tri yesterday!

I think it would be a great idea. He's supposed to intimidate you a bit; he's your Dad! LOL (But I do remember your story and understand what you really mean. :) ) Not that you are asking for a way to open the conversation, but if you are, perhaps you could start with, "It was too overwhelming for me to absorb when I was younger, but now that I'm getting a feel for the sport, can you explain to me...." I know if I were your Dad, I'd be tickled pink that I could dispense some Fatherly wisdom to my son!

My cold (or whatever) just doesn't want to quit. I was doing better so I went out and tried the new shoes for 1.95 miles Monday night. Good first impression! :thumbsup2: Unfortunately, it seemed kinda' chilly and my ears started bothering me on the way back. I woke up feeling pretty dizzy and with a headache, and I felt a lot worse whenever I moved around so I called off from work, got some extra sleep, and sat on the couch pretty much all afternoon... DW started couch to 5k on the 'mill this morning! :D I'm certainly proud of her. :cheerleader: Had to share it on her behalf; hopefully she doesn't mind... :tomato:
STILL no results for my indoor tri, nor a reply to my e-mail!!! I'll just keep checking; someday I hope.
I ran 2.95 miles last night. My running is in the pits; averaged 11:48 pace and my shines / ankles started bothering me a tad, so after the first mile or so I switched to run 2 min. walk 1 min. Felt better with that at least! While E was on the 'mill I banged out 150 crunches (hadn't done any since March 22nd; didn't want to risk pulling something in my side before the tri like the issue I had last summer. PROBABLY not related to crunches at all, but why chance it?) and did 30 min. on the ellip. Felt pretty good with both of those at least, so perhaps there is still hope!
Weight was 244.0 this AM though; I liked the 237.? I had last week much better... So, count me in on the weight loss thing. I was running a lot better when I was about ~25 pounds lighter last year! :oweye: I need to concentrate on sticking to a daily exercise schedule AND watching my diet most days of the week and not being TOO crazy on my off days (like "game night" every other week). But, I did it before so I'll do it again- think positive and JUST DO IT, right? Hey, Nike sold a lot of stuff with that slogan, worked for them... ;)

Just checking in to say hello, I have been so busy, between my stressful job, and trying to finish my Travel Agent classes (I got an extention) I haven't had a lot of free time.
Question about whats goin on during my walks-during the entire Princess Half, i never got a cramp in my side.
During my training for the Princess I would start to get them about mile 8, wasnt hydrating. But I was hydrated for the princess itself.
However! Every single walk since I've been back from that trip, I get a cramp in my side about 15-20 minutes in:silly: What the heck?:confused24:
Doesnt happen on the treadmill, but I much prefer to be outsisde.
Today is my last day of the post recovery training (lost some time because of the bad toe) doing 4 miles....Whats the key to not getting the cramp:confused24: drink a lot of water before? I dont usually do that and it's not an isssue.
And I want to thank Gail:hug1:thank you so much for providing me w/all the training plans. I sure couldnt have evebn thought about the Princess half without a program like that.
I start C25K a week from Monday:fingerscrossed:

athenna - No idea what's happening for you, but hopefully some others on the team (nono? Rozzie?) can help you out!
As for me, I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things. Today I did 5.01 miles with pretty a fair amount of walking; averaged 12:10 pace... Not happy with that time, but at least I got some exercise in! :goodvibes: It was 78 degrees when I finished, and some things I've read say your pace slows 30 seconds for every 5 degrees above 60. If that's true, by my math I would have been 108 seconds slower in cooler weather, or 10:22 pace. So, that doesn't sound so bad. :silly:
My shins have been bothering me some when I run outside. Not too bad, but enough to make me start watching it awfully closely; hope it doesn't get worse! I think I might try and start doing some stretching after I run and do a cool-down walk to see if that helps...
Rozzie
04-03-2010, 05:06 PM
Jen, I am stumped with the cramp thing. Do you think maybe there is a chance you are overhydrating? Eating right before you run? Sometimes I get like a "swimmers" cramp if I eat too much right before. Hope this gets figured out soon!!
Going to venture out for Easter Sunday by going on a 8 miler on a new route by Alligator Alley. Hoping to see the big boys sunning. Really cool elevated boardwalk platform on a marsh that is home to some biggens. This will be my longest run since my last Marathon. We'll see, should be interesting!

The results from the Indoor Triathlon I was in on March 28th finally got posted! An e-mail with the link (and an apology that they took so long) was sent today at 1:01 PM. End result? I wasn't last, but not by much...
There were a total of 22 people at our location, so for each of the three events you could get 1 (last place) to 22 (first place) points. Theoretically someone could have ended up with 66 total points if they were first in every event. I ended up 20th overall (two people finished with fewer points than I did). Eh, not too bad for my first go at something like that I suppose...
I had 18 total points, with 5 from the swim, 11 from the bike, and only 2 from the run.
Oddly enough, the overall winner only had 54 total points and was NOT first in any of the events individually... Last place ended up with 8 total points.
My ears in particular were bothering me again when I woke up (Pressure, some sinus pressure as well, headache, slightly light-headed and dizzy) so I bit the bullet and filled the script for antibiotics my Doc gave me last week and took the first dose this morning. He said that if I wasn't getting better or relapsed again to give it a try. Ah well. Hopefully I'll be A-OK soon!!! :fingerscrossed:

NO you won't regret it, because if you decide it is too much, Level 1 coordinates perfectly, and you can switch right over to that!! And, since you are in charge, you make the call. :D
I ended up doing Level 1 with an additional 3 mi run thrown in on Sat. I also never completed all my intervals on interval day. I was having left leg issues at that point and would work it until it didn't seem like I'd be gaining anything more than physical irritation. Generally I was 2 repeats short at the beginning of the program, and 3 short at the end.

Whhhhhoooowee Lisa!! Have a great time this weekend. Can't wait to hear all about it. :cheerleader:
Thanks Nono for the link. Watching it now. :fingerscrossed:
Been having a great week of running, so far. Week 1 is almost complete and I feel great. Then again, it's only week 1--but I believe the rest and low mileage last month has really paid off.

Good luck Lisa & Rick!!:cheerleader:
Found two local 5k's I'm interested in. Just have to make sure there is someone to watch the kids. Why is it so easy for DH to sign up for these things??? Oh yeah b/c he doesn't worry about these things :silly:

Just signed up for Valley Forge 3 mile walk for next Sunday and Sandy Sprint 5K for Ovarian Cancer on the 24th.
Oh and my son is doing his first half next Sat. in Salt Lake City. He has to go there for work and the race was the same weekend so he decided to sign up.

Hey Lisa, how did the race go?

Rick and I are just ecstatic!!!!!! We don't know our chip time for sure but we both PR'd :yahoo: I think it was around a 2:59, almost one minute off my previous PR from ING Georgia in Mar 2008! It also bettered last year's Talladega race by over five minutes :D
We started out going pretty fast for us. After three miles, we had a 12:58 pace going and right away, I started dreaming and told Rick, "Wouldn't it be AWESOME if we could maintain a 13:30 pace for the race?!" LOL! Well, that didn't quite happen but I am thrilled anyway!
Around mile 4, they miscalculated need on a water stop that was in a remote place from the track and ran out of water for our visit! That kind of surprised us and made us so glad that we race with fluids on board! All of the other stops were fine, thankfully, since I only carry two eight ounce bottles and prefer not to refill them.
We did really great for about nine miles. After that, I had a bit of a rough time. I don't think I had enough calories and maybe I was a little dehydrated because it was the warmest run this year so far :blech: I had packed two Fig Newton packs, one for me and one for Rick and three tootsie rolls, lol! I cannot stand Gu so I passed on it the first time they offered but I took a vanilla one around mile 10.75 because I really needed the energy. I am glad I did not throw it up! :rotfl2: I was drinking Crystal Light's hydration in my bottles and mostly water at the stops but I had pretty bad toe cramps with assorted shin and calf cramps in the last three miles but we ran/walked through them. It was at that point that we started losing speed precipitously and I was so worried I would lose our PR chances for us. I even told Rick to go on in without me in the last half mile but he refused. I also think the slant on the apron had a lot to do with the cramping also. It is not a race you would love for that reason, nono!
We pushed on to the finish and I remember the official time rolled into 3:00:03 +- as we crossed but we had started about one minute after the official start time :goodvibes: We (I) was spent after we finished and both of us forgot our GPS's needed to be turned off so that is why we are pretty clueless about actual time yet!
One of the big reasons we decided to push it on time also was that our minister called us yesterday and said that there would be a prayer service for his sake after church today. He would not say why, said he wanted to tell it once and that he would be having surgery Tuesday. I thought about him a lot and we tried to finish fast so we could clean up and maybe even make it back to Birmingham for the prayer service. I told him he helped us PR :hug1:
We were tired enough though that we sat down and ate the yummy Jim 'n Nicks smoked pork tacos they fed us afterward. We picked those over the regular sandwich and it was so delicious!!! :eating: They had a great band also and plenty of beer. Then, we hopped in the car and I was so uncomfortably soaked with sweat that I managed to completely change clothes under a towel in the car, LOL!
Sadly, we did not make the prayer service in time but Jerry was still there and we got to hug him and visit a bit. Instead of quizzing our minister, we asked a friend what was the matter with him and they said colon cancer :( Anyway, I am trusting that all will be well with him and Rozzie's father too :hug1:
Oh and the medal is very cool! The ribbon that holds the necklace is a checkered flag. The medal itself looks like a wheel but has footprints walking around the center of the wheel. It says Talladega 21000 Half Marathon and has two ribbons on it in blue symbolizing that the race benefits prostate cancer research. :goodvibes: We had a great time at the race and I am feeling pretty great now.
