Say, how do you put a video on here? I tried to figure it out before........

I just typed (or, rather, pasted) the url directly into my message text and when I hit the submit button, the video shows up.

However, I did see something interesting on the TV in the gym. An episode of Fresh Prince was on with Will wearing a peacock get-up!

Just for the record, I have enough coordination trouble running. I have NO intention of trying to do any full choreography! Besides, Disney rules say no masks, see Will's costume would get me kicked off the course. As I've said before, I'll stick to my shirt! :thumbsup2: Wonder when it will show up...

BTW, would it be bad luck for me to try the shirt on ahead of time just to make sure it fits and is OK as long as I don't wear it out of the house or anything??? :scratchchin:

Well, I started the couch to 5k yesterday and also went to the gym. Proud of myself and thought I did great.

That's awesome! A journey (race???) of a thousand miles begins with one step, and you took it! :cheerleader: Err, well, ya' know what I mean [I hope ].

That makes sense. So I probably ought to take it out for a test run... I think can manage that! Hopefully it will arrive soon, I want to see how the creation printed out!!!

In the episode I saw, Will had on what looked like a beanie with a felt peacock sitting on it and a felt vest with felt-looking peacock feathers all over it--much less encumbersome on the course. I found the peacock dance video while trying to find an online pic of the felt peacock vest.

Roz - SOrry about teh complication. Enjoy your day off!!!

Kimmy - Woo hoo!!! Great job on day 1! Hope the cold is not too bad!

Nono - Did they use a wave start the year you did the half? That's what they do now.

Funny, had breakfast with an old friend Saturday who did teh WI Ironman. She preaches to everyone not to do anythign new on race day. She had shoes with only 2 runs on them, brand new tri suit, brand new wet suit and a brand new bike bought at teh expo. SHe oculdn't sleep for 2 nights worrying about all the new stuff, but still used it. The only thing that didn't change for her was nutrition adn that's the only thing that she had issues with. :oweye:

Still, it's a really bad idea to do anything new on race day that you don't do in trianing. This would include making sure you can drink/eat what they have on the course.

Yes. 3. For 15,000 or so people. Why bother...

"Wave" definition: A really big, pretty much useless corral. (AKA: we're too lazy to divide you up further so that you will have a really good race experience, so we'll just dump you here and act like it's a solution.)

Look, I know I'm a dog with a bone on this. (there's a smiley we need!) I'm all fired up over this having just done the PDR, and experiencing another BIG EVENT, and realizing that for about $75 (can't remember my exact race fee), I had a totally excellent race experience. All this time, I half thought it was me, expecting too much from a big event. As it turns out, I wasn't.

And then I get more infuriated seeing how much angst is spent worrying about being swept at Disney races. Considering how Disney manages to pull newbies out to the race, how demoralizing to get swept and not finish! Um, gee, since there's so little time in EPCOT at the finish anyways, how 'bout diverting the +16 mm to an alternate course at the end if they are slow? I mean, the Epcot parking lot is there...why not divert people to "Course 2" if they don't make the cut off by x o'clock? Wouldn't that be fairer since they've already collected the race fee? Esp. since they have control all the variables (like owning all the land and being the government too).

Anyway, I complain hoping that the management can realize that they still have a lot of room for improvement. And, I do, in my heart, believe they do want to do a good job.

At the end, as long as they do not have to extend road closures, adn as long as the people keep moving, they don't sweep. I think you are safe once you get into MGM. I know by the time you get into Epcot, you are good as long as you keep moving.

I thougth they had real corrals before. Wonder why they changed to the waves?

I think all teh beginners is a bug reason why you have had troubles with people cutting you offf. Beginners don't neccessarily remeber or know race etiiquette. DOn't think that will ever change.

When I did a local 5K with my 4 1/2 yr old grandson that was the one thing I made sure I told him repeatedly before the race. He needed to be reminded a couple of times during the race but for the most part he did great for his age running his first race.

That's a really good point! It's part of why I'm afraid to think about doing a team entry for Everest Challenge when I hope to try it in Sept. 2011 (if they do it that year...). What if something happened to slow down [or prevent from even starting] one or the other of us? In team events, if one person is knocked out do you BOTH loose?

Uhhhhh-- what is proper passing distance to avoid "cutting someone off"? Anyone have a quick hit list of etiquette that I might not have followed (oops! :tomato:) during my whopping 2 5ks that I've done to date????

They swept someone at mile 19. :( This is probably before Epcot, but they do sweep folks toward the end. There is a girl on DR that got chased by a sweeper for miles. I think it's a good point, they should let you finish. The Flying Pig does a alternate route for you to have you finish. Maybe not be official and get a finisher's certificate and medal (I do believe in "earning" those) but It think it's important to let people finish the deed.

DG, just basic common sense stuff. Stay to the right if you are in a group of people going faster than you. Walkers stay to the right. If you do need to take a walk break, run to the far right side and then walk. And my biggest pet peeve of all, in self placed corrals, lining up out of your appropriate pace level. Oh oh oh, people running slow (or walking) more than 2 people across. :oweye: Passing people, just like a car, never cut someone off then slow up.

Here's a good compilation of race etiquette:

http://running.about.com/od/runningforbeginners/tp/etiquettetips.htm

I'd add to that:

Don't spit unless you are sure which way the wind is blowing....

Ditto for hurling.

I wonder if many fun-runners even know their anticipated pace to be able to properly self-organize into corralls.

I, myself, am worried about water stations. For my first 5K, I just swished the water around in my mouth and spit it out (when I tried to swallow a small amount once, it went up my nose). This last 5K gave out water bottles instead of cups () which I refused until the end of the course (who wants to try and carry one of those around). I know what I'm supposed to do at a water station, but I haven't been able to practice. In general, I can't even walk slowly and drink from a cup, so I'm not sure how I'm going to keep moving and drink.

Trying to motivate myself to do yoga. . .

09-23-2009, 06:11 PM
Well I actually did 30 mins of yoga. I really thought I would make excuses to not do it, but somehow I managed to overcome them. My balance wasn't all that great, which is unusual, but, oh well.

My sister and her friend that competed in the Chicago tri sent me a tech shirt to motivate me to keep running. I think that's what may have pushed me to yoga tonight.

I don't do a lot of water in 5Ks. The summer one's I do get water but just enough for a swallow and the pour the rest over my head to keep my body temp down. Now on the other hand, my Coach is a firm believer in walking through water stops for Marathons. He says he has learned over the years it does not matter if you are in the best shape of your life, without proper hydration you will cramp and crash. He swears that he can get more in by walking for 30 seconds and improve his pacing in between by being properly hydrated. This is a man that still runs sub 3:30 marathons. I also plan to walk through the stops starting after mile 6. I am following his advice and taking my own 12 oz bottle of water for the first 10K. For HM's, he tries to train us not to walk through stops but slowing down to take in a good amount.

For the 13K my plan is this: Run through the stops but slowing down to take in a decent amount. Take a gel at 1 hour so I can finish strong. It's how I train, so it's how I race. :)

I guess my concern is more about how I ensure the water goes in my mouth and down my esophagus, not up my nose or down my trachea, especially when continuing to move (walking or running)

Watching the preshow for the VGC grand opening Webcast. Just got back from running; my second night run. Went better than last attempt. Walked a lot, sarted cramping some on and off. Still having trouble with lousy lighting around home. But, I ended up with 3.33 miles in 37:41.57 total for a pace of 11:20. Nothing great, but at least I got in my distance, right? I wonder if hydration played into it; I had chinese for lunch and dinner; lots of salt and not that much to drink after work...

Oh, it's starting! L8R!!!

Do you "point" the cup, kinda like making a funnel? That's how I usually can get it in.

Good for you, Geek! I have had problems not drinking enough water, but (based on my urine) I think I'm doing a better job now.

Roz--I'm trying to do that with cups (pinching the mouth into a "v") but I still have issues. I think if they provided straws I would do better :silly:. . .

MM- We always walk through water stations. hacking up a lung for a mile is no fun. I can do water from my bottles, but not from water stations. WTG on doing the yoga even thought you didn't want to!

Craig - Getitng the steps in when you aren't feeling it is a victory. PAt yourself on teh back! As far as runnign goes, salt helps your hydration. Still, if you didn't put enough in, there's nothing for the salt to retuain. Hydration makes all teh difference to my runs.

Rozzie - IIRC, mile 19 is teh last sweep point. It is still almost 3 mile before entering MGM. After you enter MGM, you no longer need road closures. And, while it's a long way to go, it's less than 3/4 of the race. If they let you keep going the last 7 miles, you have to keep teh road in front of WWoS and the main N/S highway to MGM closed. That's getting late in the day for major road closures. Besides, just past 19 to just before 21 is an out and back. Horrible stretch. From there, you take the ramp to the highway. It's ugly up and down and tehn a very nasty up towards MGM. The very worst stretch of teh race and it follows 2 over passes pretending to be nasty hills. If you're not making 16 mpm by the time you get to 19, there's no way you will improve your pace before entering MGM.

I'm very sympathetic, but you just can't expect them to keep the roads closed all day. It's a traffic nightmare for many as it is and there's only so much you can do. 16 mpm for a full is one of the most generous I've seen. While I'd love veryone to go home happy, you need to be realistic.

OK, did 40 min last night. Jury's still out on the new shoes. they certainly didn't mmake me fly. nothing has lately, though.

OK since we're talking water....I have to have water! If I don't have water while walking/running, I fade very fast! One of the meds I'm on is a diuretic so with sweating etc, I'm dying of thirst pretty quickly. One of my biggest fears in doing distances is having to go to the bathroom  I also have a very weak bladder....I have like a 2 minute warning that I have to go and if I don't go right away, let's just say it's not good. I've gone many a time behind a dumpster, tree etc and that's not even while walking/running. DH has pretty much learned that when I say I have to go....I HAVE TO GO! What happens in that case? Are there bathrooms along a 5k route? I tend to doubt it :boohoohoo:

stimpy--if there aren't any port-a-potties on the ToT course, you and I will have to scout out some bushes :silly:

Today is supposed to be a 30 min tempo run. I got off from work early, so I headed to the grocery stores (I say stores because I went to Meijer, Target, and Kroger trying to get the best deals). Shopping wipes me out! Whether it be clothes or grocery shopping, I can't take much more than half an hour. Plus, I was in serious need of a meal by the end, so I was very disheartened. Now I'm trying to regroup and regain my strength to go run. It may be a little while, and I'm not expecting anything spectacular (which is sad, after Saturday, I was planning on trying to kick butt on the run).

Rozzie
09-24-2009, 05:24 PM

 DEATH TO SPEED INTERVALS!

Tonight was another night of pushing through the complacancy. I felt pretty puny for a while--so much so I was planning out a route to run tomorrow morning instead of this evening. But then I started to feel better. I did have to run on the treadmill because of the weather (:blech:), but there was a Brady Bunch marathon on, so at least it was distracting. I ran a 9.02 min mile (not quite as fast as the 5K Saturday, but faster than I've sustained on the treadmill before) for 30 mins.

Tomorrow--rest. Saturday--8 miles!

30 more days until the Peacocks take over ToT!!!

After much deliberation, I have decided to race tomorrow. No pain today, and no pain when I did my strides. Well, I'm sitting here typing when I should be knee deep into finishing up my 16 miler. All hell broke loose here overnight with both kiddos and somehow it is still MY job to deal with everything. 2 hrs sleep with a 3.5 hr interruption and then another 2 hrs. didn't add up to me thinking it was a good idea to jump out of bed when the alarm went off.

I laid in bed for 2 min., and refigured tomorrow's schedule, so now I'm running 5 today and then the 16 tomorrow just before church. I hope they don't mind me snoring in the back pew. :headbrickwall:

Back from the hottest race in the history of road racing. Well maybe a close second behind Badwater. ;) I gave it my all and then some and still did not break my goal of sub 25:00. 25:03. :silly: A new PR by I think a second LOL. I still somehow ended up 2nd in my age group and got a cool signed pottery piece. I would have traded it in for 3 seconds though. The last uphill mile was the nail in the coffin for that. Oh well, maybe one day I will get to run a race under 85 degrees! Maybe I'll find the 3 seconds there. :D I'll Mr Roz post his glorious news. Yes, he shaved over a minute over his last PR.

MatterhornMiss

Great job, Roz!!! 2nd in your age group :cheerleader:--well I guess I can dream about achieving that someday.

I just ran my 8 miles. The temp was probably right around 70 degrees, but the humidity was around 80%. I've been in Orlando in the middle of winter with similar weather, so I try to think it's good for training. Anyway. . . I was planning on averaging 11 min mile, but hoping to do better. For the first 7 miles, I was actually sub 10:30, but I lost ground on the last mile with a nice hill. Man, it was hard to keep going up it! So my time was 84:15, around 10:32 min mile.

Still, I think I might need to change my goal for the ToT 13K. I think I want to enjoy the race a bit more. Maybe instead of an 11min mile, I can plan for a 12 min mile. :D

Good luck, nono! So awesome that you can get up that early and run that far. I skipped church last week to run, and with everything that happened on it, I kept thinking "God'll get you for that, Walter."

Nono, good luck with the 16 miler! I can't imagine how hard it must be to juggle out of that and still train. I can barely keep up with dogs!

Great job Roz!!! :poke: 3 seconds, really, you need to be very happy with your tlime. And finish 2nd in your age group. Remember where you were this time last year and how far you have come since then.

Great job Roz!!! :poke: 3 seconds, really, you need to be very happy with your tlime. And finish 2nd in your age group. Remember where you were this time last year and how far you have come since then.

I know I know I know. It's 3 seconds Mama Gail though! I have been trying to bust it all summer and I can smell it, see it, just can't grab it. I am pleased with my progress, I remember the same race last year and how it was very cool and still was 5 minutes slower.

For all those who think I am a little too, well, competitive--a little story. Today in the race it was 3 of us who started out together. Me, RP, and a new girl we run with. New girl is a old 800m runner from high school, went to State, blah blah. Very nice girl. New girl has really struggled with running, at track, we are always encouraging her, etc. Well up the last hill, it was she and I. RP had faded about 1/2 mile earlier. I kept encouraging her, would not let her give up on the hill, she kept trying to fade back, blah blah. Well she of course out kicked me in the end, she got this gazelle kick that is amazing. Well during the awards ceremony when they announced the winner for our age group and she freaking won it!! Ha! Everyone got a good laugh when I whipped my head around to my RP and said "she's in my freakin' age group! Crap!" :oweye: We laughed and laughed. I was really proud of her, she has come so far! From no running, get with our Coach and wins her age group, all in 2 months time.

MM, I am thinking of lowering my TOT goal too. I think it's better to set 2 goals, one a "I've won the lottery and I'm going to WDW" goal, a pie in the sky sort of thing. Then a realistic one, where we can still run a comfortable yet hard race and feel proud of ourselves. :)

So, I did get in my 5 mi on the TM before dinner. I do not recommend watching Frasier while running. I almost seriously hurt myself laughing and trying to run.

Now for a new :headbrickwall:-- thunderstorms scheduled for tomorrow all morning. So Plan B is to run later in the day if the morning doesn't pan out. However, the alarm is set, since weather is never accurate for here.

They served a banana and the most horrible nasty cake in wrapper thing last year. Made me sick. There are some food places open and I plan on carbing out afterward. Like the counter service places by the RnR and TOT. Oh and for those who like a cold one after race, make sure you bring cash, they don't take room charge or CC's. :biggulp:

Thanks Sgt Flash. Really it's not a numbers game, but a personal thing. I write goals down for myself and give myself a year to accomplish them. Naturally when I started running I also made goals for that too. It helps me get out the door and run when I would rather be a slob on the couch. ;)

BTW, I need to start focusing on reaching my book reading goal for the year. I need to read 7 books by the end of the year to reach my goal. :silly:

Mr. Roz
09-26-2009, 11:09 PM
Well, Very Proud of all the Girls today and as Roz said it was HOT!!!. I am not sure how many were in the race but I think it was pushing 300 +. I decided to get a lttle up front this race to try and sidestep all the kids, earphones and strollers. They must not have read the memo.

Anyway the race started at 8 am and it was in the 90's with 98% humidity. Did I say it was hot?

The first mile has 7 turns. Hit the first few turns and felt strong but I could tell the heat was going to be a major factor. Even more so than the last race. After the 7th turn you come out to the main road and now the rest of the race is an out and back. Hit the first Mile at 7:42. I felt good but new I needed to slack up a tad bit. Decided to hit one water stop for a few seconds then took off. I was really surprised I was passing a few people. I noticed one of my running partners just behind me. He was pacing off me! Proceeded down the back stretch at a good steady pace for a mile. I reached the mile marker at 7:49.
Once you turn around the home stretch you find yourself looking at a good sized hill. I hit it pretty hard. The great thing about out and backs is you get a lot of encouragement from people going the other way. The hill lasted for about a 4th of a mile and once I crested the hill I could see the finish line.

I took about two minutes to recover a little from the hill and started picking it up. My running partner was right on me too. I knew I had just a little left so I held out till the absolute last moment for my kick. My running partner passed me at mile three and then it was on. Threw everything I had into it and just barely ,I mean by the tiniest of margins, managed to regain the lead and beat him to the finish line. Final time 23:39. Almost a minute better than last month. Felt really good about that.

I am looking forward to one day run a race in cold weather and maybe I can crack the 22 minute area. Tough course, tougher running conditions but happy all around. Real proud of Roz and all of our runners. Now the next biggy is TOT. Hope every one is doing great.

That sounds like a good idea, but I might take it a step further. And have 3 goals:

#1 Lotto version, uber peacocking post race: Sub-30 min chip time. I've managed that twice in training on really good days IIRC. But when factoring in that I always seem to do a LOT worse as it gets later in the day, I'm a little worried about hitting that at 10:15 PM... :scratchchin:

#2 Grab a PR by finishing under 31:03.61 chip time(<9:59 pace). In fact, yesterday in my training run I did 3.53 miles, and I ran the first 3.12 straight through @ 9:52 pace, started out around 1:15 PM instead of 6:45 AM like on weekedays. So, I think this should be more obtainable... :D

#3 Just get my finisher's medal! :rotfl2: I know I can always WALK 18 pace for a 5k if all else fails... Besides, I may want to stop and hang with the characters. That sounds kinda' cool and I'm really torn as to which road I want to take. I can always race for times back at home, right??? :confused24:

managed to regain the lead and beat him to the finish line. Final time 23:39. Almost a minute better than last month. Felt really good about that.

As well you should! :cheerleader: Congrats. :thumbsup2:

You know, at the risk of sounding like a whiny baby--that is what concerns me the most. Freezing cold weather! I am a warm blooded mammal that does not do well in super cold weather. I am not picky though, I say 40 degrees would be about perfect. ;) So I wonder who I need to talk to to ensure perfect race conditions?

Hope your 16 miler goes off without a hitch! :fingerscrossed:

DG, I think you are right on to set 3 goals. I think I am going to do some thinking and set 3 goals myself. I already know my lottery peacock strut goal is sub 1:15:00. Will get back on the others. :scratchchin:

Okay just for fun I looked up last year's results for my age group. The winner of my age group did it in 1:00:48. () The overall female runner was 51:46. ( ) Sooooooo I looked at the mean and it looks like 1:15:00 was right in the middle of my age group. So that is my pie in the sky goal.

1st Goal: Sub 1:15:00---Not only am I strutting, but coocooing and quite possibly a heart attack to boot. :yahoo:

2nd Goal: Sub 1:20:00.--- Happy and content with a hard fought race. :)

3rd Goal: Sub 1:30:00 Last year I was 1:33:xx so I at least want to beat that. :fingerscrossed:

So there you have it. Who wants to go next? :listen:

MatterhornMiss
09-27-2009, 03:01 PM
Well, I guess my sweet time would be 1:30.00--but, then, I ran faster than that yesterday, and I anticipate I could be faster at ToT for 3 reasons: 1) I'll be pumped about the race, 2) I won't be dealing with the same monsterous hills, 3) I actually do better later in the day (I ran yesterday late morning, which is still a pretty good time).

So I guess my three goals would be:

1:20:00 (crazy time :silly:--that would mean almost my 10K pace)
1:30:00 (I could reasonably pull this off without being too terribly uncomfortable)
1:40:00 (I can easily run this as I did this two long runs ago, in the rain, when I was lost, and even stopping to pee)

Rozzie
09-27-2009, 03:05 PM
MM, I think you are going to surprise yourself and be sub 1:20:00. You are clocking in some great runs. :thumbsup2: Remember BELIEVE IT, DO IT! :goodvibes:

I am going to have to do my homework about pacing. It is going to be either lost or won in how I pace myself. 8 miles is a weird distance. Long enough for me to need quite of bit of endurance to hold a faster pace. Shorter than the HM where I can take a mental break or two. My big issue is going to how to keep myself from starting out too fast. :scratchchin: That would be so very bad!

MatterhornMiss
09-27-2009, 03:19 PM
But those fast runs are not fun :boohoohoo:. I like running when it is fun and easy :D (I need an Eye of the Tiger speech right about now).

I guess 8 miles is going to be a smidge easier for me to pace, as my most recent long runs have been that long. Next week I'll probably only do an easy 7, then, of course the 10K, but the week after that (and my last long run before the ToT), I'll plan on another 8 miles.

I'm still more worried about my 10K--just 14 days away :scared07:

It looks like the median (because I'm not going to calculate the mean) of my age group last year in the 13K was 1:32:07.

First 5 stunk. Still digesting my meatball sandwich lunch.

Last 1/2 mi stunk. Mosquitos decided I was good dinner. :oweye: and :oweye: again. And :oweye: :oweye: :oweye: again.

Soaked and had a beer and more water. Could have done 18. Could not have done 26.2.

I'm a little wrecked mentally from the West Nile I just contracted out there...so give me a bit and I'll be back with a 13K goal set.

Okay I about wet on myself when I got my schedule for Oct. Looks like I'm doing a 22 miler the first day of vacation down in WDW. <---That's me finally cracking up. I mean when you actually laugh out loud it can't be a good sign. In other news Track went better tonight. I have another shot at my 5K monkey on my back Oct 10, so I think that mentally helped me.

I was just going to email Nono my running schedule but thought I would post it here to see if any body else wants to join a peacock for some training mileage that week.

Sat 17th--7 miles (penciled in for late afternoon at CSR)
Sun 18th--22 miles (hopefully Nono can give me some pointers on a route)
Mon 19th--Tempo workout of some kind to replace track--early am
Tues 20th--4 miles, early am
Wed 21st--6 miles, early am
Thurs--OFF
Fri 23--2 miles with 6x strides
Sat--13K!!!!!!!!!! :drunkard:
Sun--Early am 4 miles, then leave. I might just save the 4 for when I get home. That would be tough to do after late :drunkard: night Peacockery.

So anyone is welcome to join me! Scott will be doing something too, but faster. :D Most running will be at SSR/OKW, but may breakaway to BW or FW for a change of scenery too.

I just had a wonderful 4 mile run. I was excited the end of last week to find I finished my speed intervals last week (if I had know that, I would've put more effort into it). Today was an easy 4 mile run. But, fall has arrived with a vengance. It was cloudy, 56 degrees, and windy. It took 1 1/2 miles for my hands to warm up. But it looks like I comfortably ran those 4 miles in about 40 minutes (I don't know the exact time, because if I'd worn my stopwatch, I would've pushed myself to run harder). I'm running this new "course," which I feel is easier on the hills. It turns out the hills are actually steeper--I'm running up a 3% grade instead of just a 2%, according to mapmyrun.com. Go figure. :confused24:

So I feel pretty good about being able to do the 10K in under an hour IN JUST 12 MORE DAYS!!!!

I took an extra rest day yesterday, which means this week will be condensed workouts (5 in a row with a slideboard overlay -- I'll break my sbing into 2 segments and add to my lower mileage days). I'm thinking of starting my week with slideboarding and bike riding and then doing 5 in a row running days with one rest day at the end of that. It'll work until I get to FL!

Anyway, I did 8 this morning in 1:14 and change. I have some work to do to get to 1:05:xx for ToT. ;)

So, I must be the worst Peacock alive not to come and check in with y'all...:( I am so sorry! I got an FB message from Rozzie, an email from Carrie and now I see that Gail has been worrying about me here!! What a jerk I am :oweye: You know, this probably wouldn't happen if this site would warn me there are new messages on this thread but it doesn't. Anyway, I know that is no excuse so I will try to explain where I am.

First, I did not post on purpose because I could not bear to. I went to the orthopedic surgeon, the one who scoped my knees and he was very short and blunt with me. He said, "You have arthritis and you should not be running anyway." Pretty plain and simple... :boohoohoo: I actually choked up trying to talk to him. Since I had been babying the damn knee, it wasn't swollen and he said a steroid shot wasn't necessary - I just need to take up cycling or swimming. I talked with no one but Rick about this. No one on FB or Sparkpeople knew either because I was crushed! Rick and I cried on the phone about it - I know y'all understand how distraught I was!

Days went by and I babied it some more and just walked. Finally, last Friday, I attempted some tiny run sections on my treadmill and it went okay. Then, Rick and I walked 2.5 miles on Saturday in the Lupus Foundation Walk. On Sunday, after church, we did my planned six miler. I did a run one minute, walk 3 mins all the way through. I was very careful to land with knees slightly bent (it did hurt a couple of times when landing sloppy)and I did it ultra slow, even for me, lol!! BUT, I did it! And today, I did some 2 walk/1 run intervals on the tm for 1.5 miles and I am still okay!!!!!! :goodvibes:

I finally blogged about it on SP a few days ago and several people encouraged me to come back slowly and do what I love!

To top it off, we had a leak in the kitchen from the refrigerator and now we are renovating the kitchen in the next month and that has overwhelmed me. Plus, I have had unbearable sensitivity in my mouth (even affects me when running because who doesn't pant??). The dentist said no decay and put me on aleve. this happened concurrently with the knee. Today, I ended up at the endodontist thinking I might have to have a root canal on a perfectly good tooth. He said five teeth in a row were sensitive and he wasn't doing 5 root canals - Thank G*d!!! He put me on antibiotics w/ special instruction on how to brush 3 times and swish sensodyne in my mouth and take lots more aleve as we try to calm the problem. And, work has been brutal...

Next time I post I promise to post some good news I have! :rotfl2:

Glad to hear from you, Lisa. I'm sorry about the ortho visit, but, to be honest, I sort of have to question if he's giving you the best advice--it really sort of makes me mad . Have you thought about a second opinion, or at least the opinion of someone who's purpose in life isn't to hack, saw, hammer, screw, etc (as orthopods love to do) like a physical therapist?

I'm glad you're not giving up, though! Good to hear you're walking within healthy limits.

Oh man! Bad news never rains but it pours, huh? I hope things turn around really soon. :hug1:

Oh Lisa, did you see the same quack Doc as Jen? ;) I also saw a Doctor that told me I had no business running either. I think at one point in every runner's life there will be a Doctor telling them they should give up running. A lot of Ortho Docs hate running. Yeah yeah yeah, it's hard on the joints. Big deal, would it be better to die from a heart attack? You have always been very responsible and practical when it came to running. You always have been careful in dealing with your health issues. I just think this can be something you can also work around. Maybe more walking, less running. But you CAN DO THIS! Don't let some smokey hokey tell you what you can and can't do. Now get your best feathers on and get to peacocking! :hug1:

Glad to hear from you but sorry for all the problems. My sister was told by her doctor not to run or to do a lot of walking also. She isn't a runner and has never done any racing. The ToT 5K will be her first race. Glad that you are taking is slowly and feeling alright. The race just wouldn't be the same without you there. Hope you are feeling better quickly. :hug1:

Hey Lisa -- HANG IN THERE!

Wasn't there just a study released talking about how arthritis gets no worse (also no better) with running in Masters runners? I probably didn't bookmark it because it confirmed what I already believed. Let me poke around and try to find the summary.

Manage the pain. (she says as she now has a new case of ITBS and is icing in the hopes it'll be the miracle cure it usually is).

Lisa - The osteo manipulator who diagnosed my leg length issue told me I shouldn't run too. That was July of 2007. I knwo it's a different issue, but do hope you will ge ta 2nd opinion. Try if you can find a runner doc. So weird ebcause I was always told teh best thing fro arthritisis to keep moving. I know that doesn't neccesssarily mean run, but....:hug1:

ROz - SO glad the weather's finally better for you!

MM - Congrats on teh run!

Gail - How did I forget your sister was doing ToT? :silly: Too cool!

nono - Hope your condensed week goes well fro you!

Was dead last night and skipped my run. Felt like I was getting something, likely just from the flu shot Tuesday. DId that to me 2 years ago too. Better today.

Everyone else is waaayy more qualified to give advice than I am, but I have to agree, get a 2nd opinion, get a doc that will work w/you just not tell you what you cant do...I should follow my own advice:D

My workout program is all upside down...You know how much walking I did on my trip, and it was 92 and humid everyday...That may save me when I get on the scale at WW tomorrow:grin:

Had my threshold workout tonight. 8 miler to see how far fetched my TOT dream goal is. Did it in 1:18:00, and that was with 2 recovery walk breaks between hard intervals. So I am thinking 50/50 chance. ;) The weather was so nice, and I drove over to the bayfront and ran along with water with the sun setting. Ahhh. That is why I run.

Great job everyone! Kimmy, you are doing great! I read somewhere that to make something a habit you need to do it for 2 weeks. Looks like you got yourself a running habit! Welcome to the world of insanity.

Just a FYI, Mr Roz and I decided to do MNSSHP on the 20th if anyone would like to join our group. He is stomping his feet to go as his brother again (Orange dept correction jumpsuit with mullet hair wig), I really just want to go and enjoy the parade. So far, 4 x 1/2 mi intervals on the TM today. "Recoveries" were reading aloud a chapter at a time of The Canary Capers, one of the A-Z Mysteries. Seemed to work out well, and not irritate my ITB. Going to try 2 consecutive mile tonight with Renee.

Oh and Lisa, on the arthritis research, check Running Times and Runner's World -- something published this year. I also just read something in Marathon and Beyond by Walter Bortz, and perhaps that nugget was in there. It seems to me, Disney endurance is taking a while to release the "final instructions" and release form for ToT.

I also noticed EE challenge will be moved to June next year--:blech:. Crowds and heat.

I bought some energy gel to try out during my run tomorrow. I also bought a couple of packets of those jelly chews to try before the run. My last long run before the 10K--7 miles! (and it is only supposed to be in the low 50s--brrrrr)

I smoked some crack tonight and decided to do my 7 miler on the treadmill. Okay I haven't been on a treadmill in ohhhh, 6 months? Actually I surprised myself in that it was not terrible, just super boring. I really did not feel like gearing up with all the crap I have to carry when I'm on call (beeper, phone, car keys, etc etc) and to be honest did not want to run AT ALL. Made myself do it and glad I did. I also think it helped some tender areas to be able to adjust my inclines. Mmmmn. Might borrow this training method from Nono. Nono, funny you mentioned ITBS. Mine has been talking too. :oweye: Trying to baby it...Good luck with yours. :fingerscrossed:

Too funny to read this. I'm sitting here deciding: 2 mi outside + 5 on TM, or all 7 on TM....it's humid and it just stopped raining, hence why I am hesitant on going out (mosquito city). Also, Mr Nono's long run is this morning. Soooo, I'm thinking with your post Rozzie, I'm going for all 7 on the TM -- broken into 7 segments! I'll vacuum and do laundry as my recoveries!!! LOL

OK, as for your ITB Rozzie, here's my review for you:

Dump the slow stuff and do all faster, quality workouts.
Avoid any slopes/crowns...this doesn't mean avoid trail work. Trails aren't continuous irritants like a crowned road is.
The foam roller is your friend. Even if you call it a lot of bad names. :silly:
Stop when you feel the sharp, stabbing pain in your knee and walk. You may continue to run up to the point of that first sharp pain, but you MUST stop immediately if you feel the sharp pain.
Do your sciatic nerve stretches.
Look for trigger points everywhere in your legs, including below the knee.
Drink even more fluids.
Amen.

If I'm feeling frisky at day's end then, I can plop a 3 miler there onto the schedule. If not, EH! I haven't missed any miles in my build up and frankly my fitness seems static -- witness all 3 1/2 marathons in the last year within :23 of one another. Had a leisurely 7 1/3 miles today--I think at around 11:30 min mile. Last long run before next Sunday.

I found the gel much more palatable than I expected (I tried Power Bar chocolate gel, as this was the cheapest one I found)--sort of like a syrupy sweet fudge sauce. Then I remembered my sister said it was the consistency of toothpaste and I almost gagged . Still, I think I'll try and squeeze one down on the 13K--I just need to remember to slurp it right before a water station.

Good luck, everyone, on today's walking/running!

I finally went and bought myself a decent pair of running shoes. Being new - I had trouble deciding on a pair - but found one that I think will be perfect. Since I am still a newbie to this - she sold me a set of sole inserts. Should I have bought them? Or should I say - do I need them? I have a normal foot so not sure if I absolutly needed them. I have a year warranty on them and if they wear down she said to bring them in and exchange them for free for a new set. Don't know if should return them.

I was also wondering about ToT details what with it only being 3 weeks away and all!!! Haven't they released info a lot farther in advance in the past for other events? :confused24:

BTW, I noticed the 5k is full and 13k is 93% full; anyone know what the limits are? I'm curious just how big the crowd will be!!! :scared07:

I'm rather upset about EEC moving; I was hoping to do it in Sept. 2011 & trying to have another couple come with us. I was likely to be the only one participating, but it still would have been fun. June 12, 2010 is MAGIC season- I can't afford a big room during that time of year, nor do I want to be at WDW during the heat & crowds then. :headbrickwall: UGH!!! Maybe they will change it back. I'll shoot them an e-mail or letter complaining; might be a waste of time but at least I will have tried!!! Our anniversary & theirs both fall in the first half of Sept. plus I can actually get together enough points for 6 nights or so in a 2 BR during Adventure season...

DG, I think they moved it to make way for the big Half coming this Fall. Or at least that is the word on the street. I am with you, summer running stinks! :blech:

Kimmy, wish I could help you on inserts but I have no clue. Maybe Nono our resident shoe authority can help you out. ;)

Well I am exhausted. On call this weekend and just put 9 hard hours in at work now to run 6. Think I'll be taking me a nap first. I am achy too from getting the flu shot yesterday. First time to get it, but this season the risk is too great for me not to get it. I usally don't believe in vaccine's, but our area is flooded with flu right now and I got 3 big races coming up in the next 3 months. Still achy and grouchy though. I see why I had not gotten it before LOL.

Sorry to hear about your sinus infection, nono. I would definitely call it a day since you have 10 miles tomorrow!!

Yuck on vaccines, Rozzie! Which one did you get? I do hope you stay healthy though and feel great for all three races!! :goodvibes:

Kimmygme, regarding inserts what did she say they were for? I would only have bought an insert if it made my shoe fit better. If you bought a quality shoe, you should not need any further cushioning. If she sold it to you for extra cushioning only, I would find that unnecessary. :confused24:

MM, you are all set to do great at the Race for the Taste! I sure wish I was doing that one also!!

I don't know, but just using reasoning here, if the shoe was properly fit to your foot, and you don't have anatomical or functional problems to try and correct, I don't see why you need an insert.

Great job on the 9 miles, Lisa!

Good luck, Roz! I find that I have so much pent up energy and frustration getting off work, that I run better immediately after getting home. If I sit around for half an hour or so, it's gone. I recently heard some presentation that those people who feel poorly after getting the flu shot probably have serum sickness, since you can't catch the flu from the vaccine. Doesn't mean it doesn't suck to have it, though.

I have been eating way more food than I should. I hope it's just hormonal, and will pass soon. I need to be light and trim for the upcoming races!

I know! :oweye: I actually ended up making today a rest day. Just did not have it in the cards. I was achy and my Achilees was really talking just walking around the house. I have 20 miles in the morning, and just decided I'd rather have a good 20 than complete 6 miles and have a sucky 20. I think it's the first time I missed a run (besides illness and injury). Maybe it's the 3 hours sleep too? The new dog still thinks at 0100 it's turnout time, and I never can go back to sleep. Anyhoo, I am about to go to bed. Starting my LR at 0430.

Ahhh Thanks MM! You know I felt guilty, but ended up having a great 20 miler. I ran into the girl who wins Overall Female in every race I do about 5 miles into the run at a bathroom break. She is so nice and supporitve and was asking me about my training (we use the same Coach) and I confessed to her that I missed yesterday's run. She LOL'd and said she did too. She said I will learn when to hold em', when to fold em' sort of thing and that when you think you should rest, listen to your body and REST. She said she has learned resting is the most important part of training, especially if your body is hurting. Anyhoo, coming from her, it was a great relief--not only does she do Boston every year but runs 19:00 5Ks. :)

So I took off from the bathroom break really confident in my ability, the weather was much nicer than my last 20 miler. Cool overcast, and I ended up finishing with a 11:15 pace, right at 3:45:00, with my bathroom and water breaks included. No pain until the last mile. I ended up getting called into work afterward, worked for 3 hours, then met my mom for lunch. I am beat, but finally took my hour nap in case I get called back in the middle of the night. :silly:

I still can't imagine doing 6.2 more miles at the end. Maybe Carrie and Lisa can shed some light on how much harder the marathon is than your 20 milers. Wait, errrr. Maybe I don't want to know LMAO. Scott will have to drag me on the plane to Rehoboth kicking and screaming. :D

Good job, Roz!!! :cheerleader:

I skipped out on my recovery run today. It was supposed to be an easy 45 mins, but I was driving back from my family's home (about a 3 1/2 hour drive). Since I was tired, it was cold, and it was late afternoon, I changed into my pj's to try and get some work done for work.

This week is scheduled to be a light week in preparation for the 10K. Since it's a schedule specifically training for a 10K, it has the two days prior to the race off. Well, I don't know about that. Saturday I'll be flying midday, so I don't see myself squeezing in a run. But I think I might do a half hour or so easy jog Friday.

You know the still running but everything in your lower body screaming bloody murder. Then again, that may just be a Rozzie thing. ;) One thing about Rehoboth, it is going to be me and the course. I am not expecting a lot of course support. I will just have to listen to all the voices in my head for 5 hours.

You forget how crushed I was after my 20 miler last year, Rozzie. I was in complete agony and basically crawled the remaining two miles to my car. I think the death march started around 14-15 for me  Three weeks later, I was smiling and thrilled at the end of my marathon  And yes, I know all about my lower body screaming bloody murder :scared07:

And now for the confidence crusher...my 20 mile long run. Let me say on the good side that I did get it done...I don't have Carrie's background of three past marathons to fall back on. It was cold here (not like up north but I did it on Sunday after the cold front came through)with major winds that always seemed like they were in my face. I was solo as usual and attempting 4 laps of an out and back 5 mile run. The first ten were great (imagine ten miles being somewhat easy :scared07:) Then the next five were allright but getting really tough. I decided to walk at the 15 mile point.

I was having the top of the foot issue again and this time it was triggered by some smartwool running socks I was wearing. They were too snug and my left foot was threatening shut down again. I literally stopped and took my left sock off and stuffed it into my fuel belt and did the last seven miles with no sock!!!!!!

I thought I could check my walking pace to see if it hurt my overall pace in case I was forced to walk some of the marathon. It did not go well. The last two miles I literally gutted it out because my lower body ached so much :blech: If I hadn't made it so I had to do the last two to get back to my car, I wouldn't have done them because I was in that bad a condition - sad, huh? Funny thing is, it wasn't stamina, it was all body ache. Also, I recovered from the worst run of my life in record time. I was in great shape the very next day without much soreness at all. Isn't that weird??

I did manage a 15:10 pace overall but I am very worried now about how 6.2 miles more will affect my chances of getting a medal. How should I prepare for this? I am looking for any advice. I am considering taking pain pills along for the ride (and not something wimpy like tylenol) since pain was my biggest enemy on the 20 miler.

So here is my 20 miler report from last year, Rozzie - check it out!!

Thankfully, it wasn't scary at all. My girlfriend and I took our two 5 yrs olds down, and we even mentioned in passing two comments about how we're both swimmers, and being in clothes, this was likely the day we would have to go get them. :oweye:

Our beach has a very gradual slope, so once they started getting taken out, they didn't even know until I was partway out to them that they were in trouble. And, I'm not sure they knew they were in trouble with the ocean or for "going out too far" and getting the Moms mad (and wet). I mean, who else, when getting rescued from a pre-drowning says, "I'm sorry." (That was my d! :D). My friend's son got scared right before I got to him and started crying, so I grabbed him first and got him calmed down. Poor thing!

Then I got my dd. Everybody was fine! My friend's son kept saying, "But what if you weren't here?" And I said, "THEN it would have been an emergency. But, that's exactly why we're here, to help you when the ocean gets stronger than you. AND, why you never go swimming without a lifeguard or a parent around." So, they learned the lesson without having it be the hard way. And for that, I'm very grateful! :goodvibes:

I have no fear of the ocean, but I respect it completely. When my kids are in the water, even if a lifeguard is on duty, I never stop watching. And, I'm always prepared mentally to go get them. Yesterday was just finally the day...

=====================

On another note, I have a few logistics questions for the group.

What are people planning to bring with them clothing wise for the race? I hope to just do my running shorts & my team short sleeve T-shirt (which hasn't come in yet!). I currently haven't done much 'real' cold weather running so I don't have anything specifically set aside for it. About an hour ago I ordered two long sleeve dri-tek shirts to bring with me as an insurance policy against a freak cold streak in FL for ToT. I have some knit hats and fleece sweatpants n' such, but nothing that I'd think would be ideal.

Those of you who run in the dark (Rozzie)- how do you do it? We don't have sidewalks in the area where I live and the limited street lighting + occassionally being blinded by headlights make me worry about footing and is also a big de-motivator. (I do wear a neon greenish-yellow mesh vest that has reflective stripes on it (at DW's request) as a safety precaution, BTW).

Sorry, gotta' bable and whine a minute if you'll indulge me: Running the past few times has been a bit rough on me; temps in the 50s and my having a cold = asthma starts acting up! UGH. Then again, a few years ago a brisk walk in cooler weather might make me go for an inhaler; now I just cough and weeze a little and end up with a pace around 11 min / mile for 3.5 miles. So, I suppose I shouldn't really complain too much!!!

Anyway, between weather & the sun not being up early enough for me to run in daylight before work I may end up going to my treadmill or elliptical on Mon & Thur instead of running outside from now until ToT. (As I've said before, I prefer to exercise in the AM; makes my day go better at work and helps me keep to a healthier diet.) I hope to still run outside on Sat. and then my normal goal of swim Sun., weights + short ellip Tue & Fri, rest day Wed. I've been slipping up on the swimming in particular (& healthy eating) but trying to get myself back on track. Plan is to try and run today after work since I haven't yet. Weather.com says temp ~55 and 10% chance of percip w/ "sunset" @ 7PM. Should be doable is I get home and can start by 6:30, but not ideal for me...

I hope the evening hours and darkness aren't too huge a problem for me during the ToT 5k; I'm beginning to worry a bit. But, hopefully the temp & rain @ DHS will co-operate and I won't be sick then! :fingerscrossed:

Thanks gang!

I called MS and got my MNSSHP ticket today for the 20th. He told me that the 20th wasn't a discount night at first and I had to tell him that they added extra nights on the website. Had to insist that it was on the MS site and did get the discount price. JUst a heads up for anyone who still has to get their tickets that they might not have the revised list so make sure you tell them it is on the MS site.

DG, no worries on the darkness for the race. It's well lighted. Just think, Disney is never going to have a liability issue on their hands. It's just dark enough that glow in the dark bracelets glow some, but not a lot. I actually was disappointed last year how so "not dark" it was LOL. As for training in darkness at home, I just bought a firefly from RoadID. I love it!! I should have bought one months ago. http://www.roadid.com/common/firefly.aspx

What I'm wearing? If I get my Peacock shirt in time, I will wear that. My favorite pair of runnings shorts. If no shirt, I may go just running bra only. I am so used to running without a singlet it is going to be hard to adjust to wear one. Cold? Fleece? I get so incredilby hot when I run, I always warm up. I rarely ever wear outerwear in the fall. I have found that even if it's 40, as long as my hands, head, and ears are warm I am toasty in the winter.

But I will make a weather guarantee, it is not going to be cold for TOT. Pray that it is not humid and sweltering. That is what I'm worried about!

Nono--good job on the save! What a scary moment indeed.

Good job on the running, nono. Glad you're feeling a bit better. I'm so glad everything turned out okay with the ocean scare. Eeek!

Did about 20-25 mins yoga today. I'm a bit puny--well, just tired. I'm going to head out on a walk with my dogs here in a minute, in part, to take my mind off food! (I'm also a stress eater.) I have a Weight Watchers toffee icecream bar staring at me like one of those GEICO money stacks.

I also got my Final Final Race Instructions (even though I thought the last was the final) for the RFTT. This one includes info on pace groups. They have 6 listed (including the walkers). I guess mine would be 9-11 mins, though I feel there is a wide range in that, as one end I consider to be my easy pace, and the other is closer to my race pace. Oh well. I see headphones are discouraged. I'm used to running with my mp3 player, though, so maybe I can just turn down the volume some. I just want to make sure, the miles are clearly marked on the course, right?

I'm going to also be wearing shorts and my peacock tech tank. I made the mistake this past Saturday of heading out in capris and a long-sleeved tech shirt (it was only 59 degrees). Before the end of my warm up, I had to shed the long sleeves. I read that when running, body heat makes it feel 15-20 degrees warmer, so that if it is above 55 degrees, it should be okay to wear shorts and T-shirt.

Rozzie
10-05-2009, 07:21 PM
A good rule of thumb for me is I should be freezing the first 10 minutes of my run. Then I am totally body heat activated LOL.

Well I had my worst track workout ever. Probably the worst one in the history of track workouts. Got pulled aside even. Not that I was in trouble of course, but Coach was telling me he thinks he scheduled me too hard after a 20 miler and I needed to back off and just run for race effort and forget the times. It was hard to do, I had never not made my times. But I only hit one time, my very last one, and I was almost in tears from the effort. Every other time I was almost 20 seconds off. :( (which is a year in track life...) Everytime I would run by him he was talking to me all fatherly and nice which did not help me emotionally--had to fight back tears again--and I am not a cryer at all. I do better when he is a arse. ;) I knew it was going to be bad tonight, as I was so sore I could barely climb into my car to drive up to the track. Bad sign...but on the other hand he is encouraged I was able to complete the workout--even if it was at a snail pace. He says that is going to be my secert weapon at mile 20. I told him if I feel like that at mile 20 I am hailing a cab. :blech:

Sorry to be all down. Tomorrow has to be better!!!!! :fingerscrossed: :)

Wow, I didn't know that! Way to go, Lisa! :cheerleader:

Yes, I am nervous with all the new knee injuries but I am going to use Jen for my inspiration and a Peacock making her comeback! I got my nine in this week but the knee has been hollering at me since. Surprising, because at the time, I thought everything had gone very well :confused24:

So, nono, I'm so happy things turned out well in that non-emergency :p I would have thought your ocean would have cooled off too much also??

Geek and others who have not met me yet: even though Rozzie is promising hot weather, all my running gear covers from head to toe. I will likely wear my heat gear for hot weather but it is long sleeves and tights. I dress like this because of lupus sun sensitivity and an autoimmune skin condition I have...I got nothing else to wear, lol! I will wear my Peacock tank on top though!!

A tidbit I read today:

Runner's Knee

Many doctors, while advocating for exercising in general, have recommended swimming and walking over running because of the assumption that running would ultimately destroy your knees. New studies reveal, however, that not only is runner's knee avoidable, running can actually protect your knees.

As for the pin, there's not much to it. I went to Joann's and bought this pack of two peacock feathers. I cut off the stems and glued one of the "eyes" to a pin backing. The other I glued to a hair clip. I'll wear the pin for the RFTT, and probably the ToT, too.

We're running about 5F higher than normal for this time of year. It was 69F on Sunday. But more importantly, there was low wind and full sun. :)

Oh, and I got 8 miles in this morning. Then drove to PA, went to a fairly lame pre-school class at Longwood Gardens, had lunch, picked up my Mom, went to a playground with the kids, dropped Mom back off, drove back home.

Does anyone know if empty hydration bottles from a hydration belt are allowable in carryon bags? I don't plan on taking them for the RFTT, but if I can't manage my way through water stations, I may need them for ToT.

Not a expert traveler, but I can't imagine them saying anything about them if they are empty.

Just emailed Coach and told him I am dropping out of this weekend's 5K. Can't wait for the response. NOT!

Totally agree with that decision. I'm not sure why when you are training for a marathon that a 5K would even matter, 'cept at the beginning of the program.

Well my body officially said "Uncle". Woke up sick, sore throat, chills etc. I guess my track workout in the pouring rain (did I mention in my whine that it poured rain the entire time?) did me in. I should have seen it coming, body is stressed, put more stress on it and it is going to get run down real fast. So home early from work, about to go to bed. I was slated for 4 miles today, but there is no way this bod is going anywhere except underneath the covers. Good night!

Get well soon!!! You certainly deserve a good nights sleep if anyone days.

----

FYI, I got an e-mail that my shirt shipped today -and- I got my ToT final instructions e-mail! Wonder if it will really be final... :scratchchin:

Due to some stuff at work today ended up being a rest day for me, so I guess I'll sub-in my planned weights & elliptical tomorrow morning.

I did; I was hoping to ride it back to back and try and compare both variants. At least DW likes TSM & Muppets. I love TSM & ST. I find Muppets to be good, and I'm considering trying ToT & RnR - never did either before since I don't like the sensation of falling... I do like positive Gs, so the launch system & inversions on RnR sound cool. But ToT; kinda' the opposite of my favorite ride style! :rotfl2:

Yeah, I am going to have a heart to heart with him on several levels. First one being no more track workouts after 20 milers. ;) I think the way he looks at the 5Ks is it's our speedwork for the week, as he dropped my threshold run to prepare for the 5K. Honestly it will be hard to just watch Scott, but at the same time it's more important to have a healthy 13K for me. Plus the whole point of this is being prepared for a Marathon, so like you I don't think I need to be spread so thin. 5Ks are super rough on my body. Rougher than 10ks even. :blech:

I got a flu vac on Friday--but that takes 2 weeks to become effective. The swine flu vac I am refusing to take. But the swine has really been going around. I think mine is just a complete physical exhaustion. I have never felt like this in all my training. BUT on the good side, I have learned some very valuable lessons. Couldn't sleep well again last night, so I got up this morning and did some yoga. This sleep thing is really irritating. I am one of those people who does not do well when her sleep is cut. I even took a Benadryl last night since I feel not being well rested is putting me at a higher risk of getting sick (I have some mild congestion and scratchy throat, but I'm pretty sure it's just allergies). I do not want to get sick right before vacation!

Excellent work, flash! Maybe you needed a break, too.

I leave on Saturday (my ticker was created before I added the night for the RFTT); my flight is around 1:30pm or a little later. It's too weird, for some reason, to think that in less than 72 hours I will be in Walt Disney World. We spend the first night at All Star Sports. If I find I can't stand it at all, I may be springing for an Epcot resort for the ToT and walking back from the after-party (Swan/Dolphin have some pretty good rates for AP holders).

If all the peacocks ride ToT, I am so buying the pic! The worst part about ToT is the psyche out and the build to the actual ride. It is super fun, once you know you can survive it. ;)

I actually think RnR is pretty tame compared to many other (non-Disney, of course) rollercoasters. They jammed all the excitement in the very beginning of the ride, so that the middle and end are kinda' flat to me. I love riding it, though, if only to get to sing along with Aerosmith.

When I got to work, I found a wonderful email that there has been a confirmed case of H1N1 in the department. Great. No word on who it is, so I don't know my exposure risk. I know that, despite media hype, for the vast majority of people who get H1N1 it is no different that the regular seasonal flu, but I don't want that either (I think both are currently going around this area). Anywho, I just have to make it 2 more days without getting sick :fingerscrossed:. My symptoms haven't gotten any worse--still occasional sneezing/cough, tickly throat, and some watery eyes--the last is what really proves to me this is just allergies. Training question-

I don't want to mess up ToT with training changes this close to it, but the weather is complicating my plans. Forecast looks to be mid 40s to mid 50s for the next several days and often rainy during times that I could run. So, since I'm still fighting off a cold on and off and those temps have agravated my asthma in the past, I'm thinking it may be smart to switch over to some alternate workouts.

Do you think it would be bad for me to substitute time on the elliptical instead of my planned runs during bad weather? I've always been very comfortable on it and used to do it 6 or 7 days a week for 30+ minutes before I started running and I've still been doing some short workouts on it once or twice a week lately. DW thinks that would be a better way for me to go and I'm also leaning in that direction. Other options include treadmill and swimming, but I tend to be sore after both of those the next day and since I haven't done either for probably 2 months or so I'm not sure trying to revisit them now would be very smart. Final option is to try and tough out the weather running outside. FYI, last time I ran in the lower 50s my ears started hurting halfway through and breathing was getting a bit labored, that wasn't fun and I'm not sure how much good it did me...

Rozzie
10-08-2009, 02:50 PM
I am not the best person to ask DG, but here is my 2 cents. First off, you know I am a outdoor girl. I will pick outdoor running any day of the week. But if you are fighting off a cold it may not be ideal to run in damp conditions. So inside might be best for you when you don't feel 100%. But to answer your question of subbing somthing for running. Well this is my opinion which does not count for anything. I think crosstraining is great, ellipitcial does give a great cross train workout. But it's not running, and if your goal is to become a better runner, you might think about running. ;) I don't see anything wrong with exchanging a day or two a week on it, but not to sub it out completly. But do what you feel is best for YOUR body. Good luck. :)

I'm dealing with allergies, and they must be indoor allergies, because when I head outdoors and get running, I feel so much better! I enjoy running in the 50s, I have found. I put on my new pair of stretchy running pants and, for the first time, I'm not embarrassed by tight-fitting pants! But other than that, I like it because I'm running faster when I'm not fighting the heat and humidity :D.

I agree with Roz--I'm not an expert, and cross-training is good, but you need to do running (I would inexpertly guesstimate at least half your workouts should be running--but I pulled that number out of my ear) if you're training for a running race.

For better or for worse, I finally checked the forcast for Sunday--low temp 74 (that's a low for mid-September!) and high of 94, with a 30% chance of storms. Oh well. I would've really liked to see temps in the mid to upper 60s for the race, but I guess as long as the race is held and not rained out (like the Everest challenge), I'll be happy.

At least it looks like the coolest temperatures are right before sunrise (which will be 24 minutes after the race is scheduled to start)--but that's also the highest humidity!

MM, the South is in the middle of a incredible record breaking heat wave. I am sure it will last throughout TOT race too. The best advice I can give anyone who is coming down to the heat is to start the race conservative. Even if your body ran through heat all summer, it needs time to adjust back. Save it for the end and finish strong. I know you know all these things though. You are going to have a GREAT race!! Are you bringing a laptop or smart phone? Thanks for the advice, Roz. I'll really try not to take off like a shot, like I did at my last 5K. Maybe I should take a little walk around on Saturday afternoon after I get to WDW?

Oh G*D! We're doomed! :scared07:

DG, yes you can sub the ellipitcal for the tm...people who are injured do it all the time. Just get that heart rate to where it would be for you while running...to get as equivalent a workout as possible. But, notice that it isn't a substitute for running (you know, the outside kind...;)) Indoor equipment doesn't have the same mind-clearing properties that a good outdoor romp does, imho.

Rozzie

MM, I am sure the mile markers will be clearly marked. Usually in a 10K this is what I do. First 3 miles are even conservative (faster than easy/recovery pace--much slower than 5K race effort) . Maybe a tiny negative split, but not much. Then at 3 I start (or attempt LOL) some negative splits. A little faster, faster, last mile still faster, then do a kick about 5.9 or so. Just how I do it. Of course, so you may want to ask Speed Peacock (:love30:) how she does hers. My 10K times are blaaah. Still trying to get under 54:00. :oweye:

Good plan, but I think 3 mi is too long to warm up in a 10K race. Mi 1 -- resist the temptation to go out with the speedsters. Use it to work thet kinks out, and to say, "Hey, I can do this all day." :cloud9: Then, during Mi 2, start to quicken your foot turnover, but not so much that you are huffing and puffing. You'll be breathing harder, but not sounding like Monica Seles playing tennis, you know? At that point, check your watch and note your pace. This will be a good indication of what you are capable of that day. Don't argue with it. Just use it, as Rozzie outlines above!!! :thumbsup2:

Oh I have already done a mile warmup before the gun. ;) Usually the first 3 miles are a minute or so under what I want to finish at. For example, If I want to do last mile in 8:00, I do the first 2 in 9:00, then go 8:45, 8:30, 8:15, 8:00. Or at least that is what on paper in my head LOL. I like reading other people's race plans. Really gives me some good ideas on other things I can try. :thumbsup2:

Other options include treadmill and swimming, but I tend to be sore after both of those the next day and since I haven't done either for probably 2 months or so I'm not sure trying to revisit them now would be very smart. Final option is to try and tough out the weather running outside. FYI, last time I ran in the lower 50s my ears started hurting halfway through and breathing was getting a bit labored, that wasn't fun and I'm not sure how much good it did me...

Real simple brother..........Don't run in the rain, wait till you feel better, then go outside and run...........

I'm a simpleton when it comes to running.

I will be a starter for the Race for Taste from 4:30 am to 8:30 am and at the finish line for the Tower of Terror from 8:30pm - 1:20 am. (Crazy volunteer hours!) Come say Hi!

Maybe next year, I might actually run them.

Susan

P.S. Is in the 90's today. Really unusually warm for October.

Please remind me, why should I be running all the time?.........After taking 11 days off, I set a PR in my 5K route (ok, only 2 seconds, but it counts), took off yesterday, than ran 7 miles today set another PR..... ok, only 2nd 7 miler, but I shaved 4:16 off my time from last week.....1:21:47......11:34 pace

:thumbsup2:

Yeah, I'm suggesting that you are waiting too long to start a progression, esp. given that you have had a warm-up. 3 miles a min over is too long in a 10K race...but probably about right for a 13K. SO STOP SANDBAGGING Peacock!:grin::grin:

But, I absolutely agree with your theory. I've run my last 3 halves in 3 different manners and my total variance is :23. I find progression runs so darn comfortable, that it's my go-to race strategy from now on...

How you train is how you race. I need to probably do more progressions to get that comfortable level you speak of.

Speaking of running, I finally ran yesterday. 2 days off, then did 3 last night. Felt good. Trying to motivate myself to run 5 tonight. Waiting for it to cool off, heat index is 99. I know ya'll will be glad when the heat wave is over with so my endless whining will stop!

SusanT--If you see someone wearing a running kit that looks like blue and pink cotton candy with a peacock feather running in the RFTT 10K, that's me, so don't hesitate to say "hi."

Thank you! I hope I'm not too excited to sleep tonight! This morning I woke up at 4:45 am, fell back asleep to 5:50am, and have been up since.

The pics may take a while, since we'll be moving to SSR tomorrow after the race, but we'll be at EMH at MK in the evening (it goes until 2am--but I don't know if we'll be up to staying that long), but I will surely post them--Monday I will have the day to myself, so I can be a bit more leisurely.

Looking at the news, the Race for the Cure here in Louisville just took off! It is beautiful weather for running here--a clear, cool 49 degrees. (update--15 minutes later they are saying people are still just now crossing the start line. 10,000 people!)

p.s.--Yesterday, to try and calm my nerves (I am a planner, I tell you), I practiced jogging around in my apartment picking up a cup of water as if it were a water stop. I think I figured out a good way to squeeze the top of the cup to really minimize the stream of liquid that comes out. I'm so silly.

Great planning, MM! That is how I drink on the run or fast walk too; pinching the top of the cup is perfect :thumbsup2:

Well, I don't think I only lost a day to amnesia...WHERE has October gone?
Just wanted to pop in and send luck and pixie dust to MM and all the other racers and everyone at the TOT!:cheerleader::cheerleader::yahoo::thumbsup2:

Not sure what I've been doing but I know I haven' t been running OR walking. Not only did I lose out on the banking of my DVC points, but also my two Puerto Vallarta timeshares...ARGH. I've had to join II so that I can bank there (not DVC but the others). These simple things sure can get complicated sometimes.
