CB, way to go on your walk:thumbsup2:
Legal stress syndrome? There is a name for everything, isnt there? You should be able to sue someone for that:grin:

Had dinner last night with some girlfriends from high school, one of them lost a ton of weight, went from a size 20 to an 8 (sounds like my story:D)
She's meeting me at my house at noon and she is going to hit the track with me....I like to go as soon as I am ready in the morning, by noon I'll be ready for lunch, lol. But not everyone is the early riser I am...She said we are not jogging...I said ''oh yes we are'':D

Just in from my 10 miler. Must remember to hydrate! I was feeling like crap around the halfway mark and remembered I only had a few sips of water in me. :oweye: Got my water bottle I had stashed away at a fire station and what a difference! It was hot, we even started around 0600 to try to avoid the heat. This summer we may have to get up in the middle of the night.

Jen have a good track workout! What a inspirational story about your friend, I love stories like that. :goodvibes:

CB, would legal stress syndrome make you eligible for any type of aid? ;)

Bad Roz......Just because you are having such a good time with your mom doesn't mean you should forget your first rule of running! :confused24:

Jen...hope you and your friend had a great walk/run together.

Stimpy...you'll be great and won't be eating anybodys dust.

nono...how's your heel doing?

Well, I am PEACOCKING again this weekend. My son did the Broad Street Run this morning (10 miler) in 1:25:29. They got lucky and didn't have a lot of rain until after he finished. Just a few times with light rain.

Holy Crap he's fast, Gail! Tell him congrats from one of your running buds! :)

ETA: Oh I forgot to answer your question. Heel is still raw. But, I did manage to get my first 5 min slideboard work out in... it's for me! :woohoodance: I put on a ski movie, started my 5 min and by the first time I checked my watch, my 5 min was up! Feeling a little achy now in the weak areas of my lower legs, so I'm pretty sure this is going to enhance my training nicely. Very excited to be benched and healing and learning a new skill.

Gail, thanks, we did! We walked for an hour and 40 minutes, my longest yet...Foot hurts, will take tomorrow off....Way to go to your son!!! Wow, he's doing great!

Nono, sorry your heel still hurts:( Whats a slideboard?

nono
05-03-2009, 02:54 PM
athenna,

Slideboarding was popular about 10 yrs ago in gyms, but it has been otherwise buried in certain sports training or rehab centers. Mostly hockey goalies and skiers like it to augment training.

Here's what they are:

http://athleticinnovation.com/

It's non-impact, cardio, and fits into my marathon training program beautifully. The guy who's program I'm following is a huge believer in cross-training to reach running goals. I'm thinking he's right for someone like me, who's come to running late from other sports. So, I will be throwing in swimming (my first sport) and slideboarding to substitute for skiing (my favorite sport) and think it'll help my bod "recall" all its former knowledge which should help me become a better runner. At least that's the theory I've extrapolated from the material he presented in his book. :D

It looks like fun too, nono! I'm glad you found a fun crosstraining pasttime :goodvibes:

Did you get your girlfriend to run any, Jen?

Man, Gail, your son is very fast - I know you are the proud Peacock mom!! :D :cheerleader:

Rozzie! I am so sorry to hear about your car biting the dust! There is no saving it, huh? I can't really imagine doing without a car in my area! Its ten miles one way to work and we don't have mass transit in Birmingham :silly:

So far, I haven't got in a long run this weekend at all :( Yesterday was a family baby shower and today was church and very bad weather all day. I'm thinking of breaking down and getting on the treadmill or my bike instead...

Rozzie
05-03-2009, 03:35 PM
Wowser Gail, your son was smokin'! :rocker: That was a awesome race he had, I am crossing my fingers he will decide to do the Rehoboth with all of us. I would love to meet this gifted runner. :)

Lisa, I can't live without my own car either. I am just waiting till' a solution presents itself. The facts are we just can't/won't pick up another car payment now. Family rule sort of thing. Hopefully we will be able to stick to our guns, the Saturn will be repairable, and can get another year out of it. :fingerscrossed:

I am actively looking for a cheap yoga class/good yoga dvd for 2x a week. (any recommendations? Beginner like...) I can run in the morning before work, then XT after work. That way I still get my mileage in. I got a outline of my Rehoboth or bust schedule. Boy it's a doozie.

I am doing base work for the next 2 months--establishing a high sound base, lacking this now for sure. Then it gets specialized. Goes like this:
May & June--Base Work
July--Base with Hill repeats :blech:
August & Sept--Endurance with Speed
Early Oct--Endurance with Speed
Last week of Oct/1st week of Nov--"Sharpening" (that just sounds scary..)
Then Taper Starting Nov 8. :silly: I need to make sure my will is in order...

I have to say I am jealous of Nono and the slideboard. MMmmn. :scratchchin:

Hi Lisa:D..No, actually, she didnt get to run at all...She recently had surgery to remove a lump (luckily it turned out to be nothing) doctor told her no jogging for 2 months...So we just walked...I did 1 90 second run, just cause she wanted to see me do it:grin: Maybe she didnt believe I actually do this now, LOL!

Roz, your 2 month schedule looks like another language to me:grin: Looks pretty intense.

Oh yes, there's one more thing you can do: put your foot in a pan of cold water and put some ice in there too. 20 min in. 20 min out. 20 min in.

Ice is like a sacrament in the sports world anymore. Deservedly so! Go ice woman!!!!!! Hurry!

Rozzie
05-04-2009, 04:27 AM
Yes, ICE!! We are always icing, keep 5 icepacks ready to go in the freezer at all times. Make sure you elevate too for the swelling, and lots and lots of ice. Like nono said, make sure you split it up into 20 min increments. I bet it will be better by tomorrow! :fingerscrossed:

The reason I suggest a pan of water for the foot/ankle area is that sometimes it's hard to get the ice exactly where needed. Sooo, using the water with ice can help get to those difficult areas, and also I find it easier to just stick my foot in a big bucket v. keeping the ice there (my ice packs don't fit in my socks unfortunately...).

HEY, so think good thoughts for my friend. She ran the NJ marathon yesterday, and by her watch, she qualified for Boston by 2 sec....results haven't been posted, so she's not sure, and worse than that, the site keeps having "service unavailable" messages! :scared07: She's gotta be stressing to the max! (This friend and I went to high school together, lost touch and reconnected over Facebook. She's a wonderful woman.)

No on the epsom salts. I think that's better in a warm bath to just keep everything honky-dory, not when you have an acute problem.

MM-congrats on your move! Take the hills a little bit at a time, and you are going to be amazed at how it will skyrocket your strength. Also hills improve your form and strengthen your quads--which will help prevent knee injuries. ;)

I think I must not have the correct form, because I feel it more in my calf than in my quads. Any suggestions?

I do find that I'm not as short of breath while jogging any more. It makes me wonder if I'm not pushing myself hard enough. But then I realize my legs feel like they might fall off and want to believe I'm just getting in better shape.

Hey Peacocks -- just got news back from the doc that my D tested positive for proper immunity for measles, mumps and rubella. Sooo, going through the insanity of blood draw was worth it.

I'm also using it as a teaching moment about exercising our rights as we have them these days, since a couple of you noted you don't have the same rights in your states. I *think* she sort of understood. Maybe.

So , I did not understand the reason for the blood draw... Does this mean that her natural immunity negates the need for immunizations for these diseases? :confused24:

So , I did not understand the reason for the blood draw... Does this mean that her natural immunity negates the need for immunizations for these diseases? :confused24:

The reason for the blood draw is to avoid an unneccesary innoculation. The second series of shots (boosters, if you will) which generally start at age 4, is to capture the minority of the population for which the original vaccines did not "take." So, here in NJ, we have the option of analyzing the blood first to see if there's a need for the second series of shots. If the person has immunity, then no need for the shots.

I do find it interesting that in the state which headquarters most of the major pharma companies in the U.S., that this is available to us.

Hey, folks, check this out:

Amazon.com: Running for Mortals: A Commonsense Plan for Changing Your Life With Running: John Bingham, Jenny Hadfield: Books

$6.29 and in stock!

I have no idea about this book, but I know Carrie and Lisa liked the author's Marathoning book.

It does finally answer my question though as to if he had any follow-up books -- he does! This might be a more versatile read for those in our group who aren't targeting a marathon at this time. :)

Nono, sending every good thought I have up to your friend. I would have gone nuts by now waiting. I would hate to think of her not BQ'ing by 2 seconds. :( I was telling some mothers at work about you being able to test for the titers. They were very jealous indeed. Just makes so much sense to do it that way.

Jen, glad the ankle is feeling better. Nono is right, the ice pan is good for a all over soak. Also something that is good for work is the clay ice packs. They are made out of clay, freeze well, and mold to the shape of your foot and come with a velcro wrap. Kinda $$, $10 at Target, but I love mine.

Laura, you are going to rock it on your 5K! I can't wait to read your RR! :)

Well, they now think they can fix the car. Major bill, but still less than what we would have to shell out for something new. If anyone knows the patron saint of used paid off cars, send a request for me. ;)

MM, if your calves are hurting, it does not necessarily mean you are using the wrong form. I know when I do hill work, all types of weird things hurt. Downhills are hard on my hammies. Piriformis hurts uphill.

Drug and running caution article here:
http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-286--13116-1-1-2,00.html

Rozzie, towards the top of p. 2, there's an off-hand reference to the impedement of healing with NSAIDs...but no hard data. :( Search continues.

Thanks for the share, it was an interesting article. Sometimes I'd take 600 mg of "vitamin I" AFTER lifting weights; from now on I think I'll just be less agressive while lifting to begin with! Then again, I've been lifting so infrequently it probably is a non-issue... :rotfl2:

Clay ice packs, huh? Never even heard of them! Cool, I'll check them out...$10 isnt that bad, it's worth it, I'm sure.
I am just bummed because I finally got myself into a good workout routine, I havent felt this happy & healthy in years, and now I go and bruise the foot:mad: I would love to hit the track tomorrow, but I should probably ice and elevate for 1 more day, just to be on the safe side....sigh..

Great news that they can fix the car:thumbsup2: Much cheaper than having to go car shopping:eek:

Jen, don't get discouraged. I remember when I first started running I got a Piriformis/sciatica injury that sidelined me for 3 weeks. I thought I would never run again, and went into this deep depression. I finally had made a change in my life, wanted to be active, and it was like my body was bucking my decision. Long story short, injury went away, and I'm running more than ever. It's better to let a injury rest and heal-- you will be back in a quicker timeframe than if you (cough) ignored it and kept running. ;)

I have a question for those of you who have actually run a race. Where/how do you warm up and cool down? Generally I use the first and last 5 minutes or so to walk briskly before starting to run or after finishing my run. Is there a way to do this before a race? I don't mind walking the first 5 mins of a race, but to slow down to walk across the finish line for the last 5 mins seems silly. :silly: But I don't want to be hurting later because I didn't properly cool down!

Thanks!

Funny you asked, I remember when I first started racing I looked at all the people running before the race and was like "what the heck are they doing, they are going to use up all their energy!!" Then I noticed that all the top runners do this....hamster wheel started turning. Then I got my Coach, and well the rest is history LOL.
We always warm up anything less than a Half Marathon before the race. We usually run a very slow easy pace for a mile or two--as close to the starting gun as we can comfortably allow. Actually we get into "trouble" if we don't do this, Coach thinks it's super important. If you think of it this way, you are doing speed work. You would never jump into a speed workout without warming up, why do it for a race? Also your risk of injury greatly jumps up without a proper warm up. Now after, we are always required to do a mile cool down at least. Now this I am bad about, I usually consider my walk to the beer line as adequate cool down. I am getting in trouble for this bad habit, and have been told I will be spied on at future races to make sure I cool down properly. I understand and believe the concept, but I am just so pooped out after giving 110% to the point of puking at the end. The last thing I want to do is run more! :silly:

Car update: Cost $600 instead of $1200. It's running, and not smoking. I am glad to have a running car again! Now to see how long it lasts. :fingerscrossed: I am going to send positive energy into it and let my karma deal with it. :)

As for warm ups and cool downs- YIKES; 3 extra miles combined??? :scared07: I've never gone further than 4.27 miles TOTAL so I don't think I'll be doing anything beyond the 5k on Saturday- I don't have "speed work" in me yet!!! Luckily, I also don't have your coach to get in trouble with. ;) Let's hope things go well, I've been feeling really tired the last few days; 4.26 miles Sat., a little over 2 on Sunday, no exercise Monday or so far today... I'm thinking about trying to hit the sack early tonight and elliptical Wed. & Thurs. AM then use Fri. as a rest day. We'll see if I stick to that and if it works! :fingerscrossed:

Yeah, for me, I just try to park far away from the race and walk in and walk back to the car afterwards (sometimes up to 2 mi). I'm not much for a pre-race run...I build that into my first mi or two as part of my race. I never race all out in the first 2 miles.

Everyone's a bit different, but most people do some sort of warm-up/cool down. :)

Wow...lots of catching up. I'm the only person here who has no withdrawals at all on days I don't walk. I might walk tonight tho, I have more work but I think I'll allow myself a little break.

Good news re car, Boston Marathon qualifying and foot.
Jen...maybe when you can walk again, walk less time and do a few more sprints. Swelling is our enemy...and I believe it's more lenght of time than what you do in that time that results in more inflammation.

The only good news is that attonreys cannot garnish one's alimony ...in colorado it is exempt. A very nice attorney gave me the statute number for that exception today and MADE MY DAY.

Well I had my first official trail run workout last night, what a trip! We went to a trail about 10 miles from our house that I never knew existed. Deep into the armpit we went. Total wildnerness, it was awesome. Ran with Coach's racing team members which is always motivating LOL. Only got lost once and lost a few minutes. You see you run alone and try to catch the next person in front of you, I went 2nd as I predicted my loop time to 15:00. Those predicting faster loops, say a 12:00 loop, would have to wait 3 extra minutes at the start than try to catch me. Luckily I wore my old running shoes, as it was a true trail run. My RP and I immediately got made fun of for going around deep puddles, we were easy targets as the only girls. But boy, once I got over the fact I will have mud all over me, it was a blast barreling through shin deep water. What a workout too, trail running uses all types of different leg muscles you never touch in road running. Plus running in wet shoes for miles makes you think you have bricks on each foot, extra muslce power! Especially the hills, geepers my legs still feel like jelly. ;)

It was hot, humid, and flies ate us alive. We were all covered in mud. I can't wait till' next time!! :thumbsup2: It's great to be doing something a little different.

Laura, toe taps and ice, and the duck walk. That's the formula for shin splints. I know you and Craig are getting excited!

Hey Rozzie -- I use my trail shoes on the street when it's raining...they empty out the water better and stay light, it seems. Worth the feeling of running on cleats through the streets for me. :D (I have them to run on the sand and are part of my nefarious plot for redemption at this year's Sea Isle Sand Run [and hurdle contest :oweye:]).

Just did my second slide board session -- hung over. Went fine. My BIL and his work buddy stayed over (reason for the hangover). They picked up a job here and all the profit goes out if they have to drive back and forth every day, so they bunked here. :)

You know, you make a excellent point. I need some trail shoes. Found some I could score for around $55 at running warehouse. Thanks for the push I needed in the right direction. What kind do you have? Oh just last night my cell phone showed you had called this weekend (along with another 7 calls I missed). I just love how my cell phone decides when to inform me of calls, sigh..

Just walk around in circles muttering to yourself in the starting area. It'll clear a lot of room for you. ;) This kind of behavior is on my mind 'cause a friend and I were talking about odd things you see at a race. We want to go to a race this summer and act like total idiots in the starting area to see what kind of reaction we will get. We were giggling about this the other day -- seeing if we could be the oddest things at a race.

Yes, I definitely use running in place of professional therapy. Perhaps time to rethink that... :rotfl2:

Rozzie, I have the New Balance 790s. They work for me. I did have to 1/2 size up on them, which I don't have to do on any other NB shoes to date.

haha nono! I already feel like a total goober when running (because I feel I have no idea what I'm doing and have no business trying to do it), why not act insane while I'm at it!

I really like my Asics gel landreths. I think they work for me because the heel hits lower on my achilles tendon than other shoes so it feels more comfortable (and less rubbing). But, I've not done this near long enough to tell what sort of injuries may come of them :dizzy:. And I still feel I'm not running correctly as my calves always feel so tight (during and after).

It seems like everyone around me has Saturn's that have quite a bit of longevity to them. I know this car will go down as our first and last Saturn. We joke that it should last a long time as everyone on it has been replaced at least once--and that was when it was 3-5 years old. It was only 3 years old when the compressor went out. Replaced that under warranty now it has gone out again last summer, and we of course did not replace that. I find that driving around in the Alabama summers with no AC is good for my mental toughness. Plus I sweat off kcals just driving around town. ;) Interesting news about the Penske thing.

MM, I was thinking about you this am going up a big hill. Yes I could feel it in my quads, but also felt it in my calves. I was trying to see where I could feel mine vs, where you feel yours on hills. Be careful with those calves, as sometimes that is a Achiles trying to make some noise. My suggestion with that is get a foam roller and roll those babies out. When I started doing this my calf tightness and Achiles issue went away. (knocks on wood as fast as she can)

Oh for the warmup question, there usually is a neighborhood around the start site that we use a warm up. Or for the military base we went to last month, we ran the first mile of the course. Note we only warmup for 10ks and less. HM's, well like Nono says I use the first 2 miles of that as a warmup.

Ahh, I was a Saturn fan, back when being a Saturn really meant being "a different kind of car"--you know, when there was that big homecoming in TN and the dealerships had coffee and donughts. AND THE CARS WERE PLASTIC!!! I even had me one of those plastic cars--a silver 98 SC2. It was my first (and, well, only) new car. I loved old Betty the dinosaur (named not because she was particularly old, but because when I looked at her front end she looked like a brontosauraus with snaggly fog lamp teeth). Sad to say, after 115,000 miles and almost 8 years, I had to leave her in CA when I moved back to KY. She needed a lot of work done to make her safe to drive back across country, and I didn't have the money. Plus, my mom had just bought a new(er) car and was willing to give me her old one for free. So Betty passed on into the hands of the Salvation Army.

I even remember when I bought that car--they had the big sendoff in the lobby, took my picture (and even sent me a copy on a calendar later that year). Saturns were the coolest.

Why in heck do you think you are a failure? Are you more active than you were 6 months ago? Yes. Are you doing what the majority of Americans will never have the discipline to attempt? Yes. So no more of the down talk. Running/Walking is a mental sport. You mind has to be right are you will never get to where you want to be. Do 5 minutes on the TM. Do 6 minutes the next day. 7 min the next day. Ice your shins, do the duck walk, toe tap. Plenty of people have had shinsplits when they start out, bad cases, like Scott for example. You can't let minor setbacks throw you back to where you were. That's all they are. Minor setbacks. Things could be worse, always could be worse. Think cancer, ALS, MS just to name a few. You have the ability to do it, now Just do it!!! Not to sound like a underpaid motivational speaker, but when I start doubting myself I think of the Nike add--JUST DO IT. Don't second guess it, don't over analyze it, don't dread it, don't put it off. Just do it. I think it's the best sports slogan ever. Well a close 2nd is "Pain is weakness leaving your body". ;) So go get em'!! No more self doubting, okay? :hug1:

Stimpy...I'm in the same boat only with more weight than you to lose and none of it is moving! So never fear.....you will have someone to WALK with in the 5k. And we will also get our medal. Never fear!

I think you might recheck your goals just to see if they are reasonable for you. What others can do or dodo (oops another poop joke) isn't what you need to do. Maybe you can't walk longer w/o hurting...then just try to walk the same amount of time but vary the speed or vary the incline on your tm. Some days i walk at 4.5mph and some days I just don't feel like it so I walk at 3....no biggie. It's just walking. I think the pounding from jogging might give more shin splints than walking does, but if it's walking that is hurting, try shortening your stride a little. And maybe go back to socks. (I TM'd without socks one night and ended up with a blister on the ball of my foot...so now its socks for me!

I think it's hard sometimes with reading about the outstanding run times and discipline here on this thread, to feel good about just walking a mile....but ya know, a mile here and there makes a much healthier heart.
The weight loss...well that 's probably not going to come from walking. So what, we'll be fluffy with good strong hearts!:rotfl2:

Esp. for jiggerj and DisneyGeek, but others might find it useful too...

I suggest a saying to help you through the race. If I can be so bold, as it is your first, try, "I am doing this." Not I can...of course you can! Lots of people can, but don't. Celebrate that you are doing it. :goodvibes:

Now for the nitty gritty:

1. Race numbe goes on the FRONT of your shirt or skirt or shorts, never the back.

2. Don't line up at the front and don't weave in-and-out of the crowd unless you are really stuck when you start farther back.

3. Keep your sense of humor. If a family member (Geek!) or stranger says something cutting or odd, just laugh. It's a reflection on their shortcomings, not yours!

4. Don't worry if you haven't gotten a good night's sleep the night before. It doesn't matter. Seriously. You will be fine. You can take a nap after the race, and no one complains! :D

I want to second Roz's encouragement--you're doing great! How many people would not have stuck it out? Yet, you are! And as to the weight loss, comparing yourself to DH isn't going to be pretty. I don't know why God designed us this way, and I don't think it's fair ;), but men seem to be able to lose weight and build muscle mass so much easier than women. Darn those hormones sometimes!

That's very helpful--thanks!

I try and celebrate the fact I'm doing it whenever I run (why do I keep saying run? I'm really only jogging). Every week when I up my time spent run/jogging, I really feel so proud of where I am. It's not where I hope to end up, but I am so amazed at how far I've come in a short time!

Best of luck to everyone! Keep up the good work! :cheerleader:

I have no idea, Laura:confused: Maybe my bod was rebelling because I went from doing too much to doing nothing, I have no idea.
I did just do an hour on the Gazelle machine, actually worked up a sweat on it....If I dont hold the handles and I position my arms like I am actually jogging, then I can get a decent workout.
I feel better since doing that, or it could be the painkiller, lol....I just dont want to get discouraged...The weather is supposed to be much better tomorrow morning, so I am hitting the track then!

Well the Saturn is dead. Cracked engine. I've blown $1200 on more fun things for sure. Anyway, I got the call at work. Skipped lunch, left work early, drove by the Honda dealership and told them if they wanted to sell me a car they needed to be handing me the keys in less than 2 hours. That including me trying to make up my mind on body, style, model and color--which then I had to test drive every time I changed my mind. ;) It's nice to actually see the dealership desperate for your business, they treated me like royalty. Granted I was the only one in there LOL. Got 3.9% no money down on a new 4 door Civic Gray. I left Scott at home, only told him I was "going by" the dealership for a price. They kept asking me if I needed to call my husband, I cracked up. Err, can a woman buy a car alone? I have good credit and a decent job, WTH? Plus he always wants to add all the extra's we don't need that jacks up the price. So without him I could negotiate a great price, on a non-souped up car I could actually afford. I mean, do I really need a navigation system and spoiler for a extra 3k? Anyway to make a long story short, I am relieved. Scott got a kick out of me pulling up in the new car. He said he knew I would come home in something new, just didn't have any idea what. I guess I have a pretty understanding hubby. :)

Jen, don't be down. There are plenty of days I feel like crap. Hurt all over, so sore I shuffle throughout the house. Get out there tomorrow and stretch the sea legs and I bet you will find yourself feeling better. :goodvibes:

Stimpy, I meant to add to my soapbox speech before I started rambling on old shoe commercials...Men will always lose weight faster than woman. Usually they lose more. It's the way G*d made them, they have better metabolisms than we do. I do without all the time and the scale is at a standstill. Scott has lost 48 lbs as of this morning. He still cheats and eats banana pudding and chicken biscuits from chickfila (granted on rare occasions). WTF! I pass by chickfila and gain 5. :confused24:

I cant believe car dealers actually ask if you need to call and ask your husband! What is this 1950????

I'll sometimes lurk this thread in lieu of actually exercising and caught this little tidbit.

I realize Roz shouldn't have been stereotyped the way she was but I've spent 28 years at a dealership where probably 80 percent or more of the women customers I deal with perpetuate the reason.

We explain the problem and make the recommendation, but they won't do ANYTHING till they or we talk to their husbands. Most times the husband has no more expertise about cars/trucks than their wives, but they are the one required to make a decision.

And before you think I talk down to my female customers, the majority of the time they deal with my service advisors whose names are Ruth and Michele.

So, Roz, sorry you were treated the way you were, but it's not entirely their fault.

Wow...I'm exhausted. Better head back to Nothingness.

Gail, thanks:hug1:

Ken, I do see your point, I have had a few customers myself that wont do anything until they talk to their husbands....I just didnt think that the dealership would come out and ask if they need to talk to thier husbands...But it's a point well taken.

I agree 100% with this. Plus add in the armpit area, which is a very consertative husband is man of the house area. They were not disrespectful in the least bit, just wanted to make sure I was ready to make a decision then. We all had a good laugh about it, and one made a comment that he wished more women could make decisions on their own. Like I said earlier, the whole process was a+, restored my faith in the car buying process. Especially after got me out in my time allotment. :-) I felt like I needed a campfire stove and tent with the Ford dealership. :blech: Maybe next time I'll see what GM has to offer. ;) Drop by more often Ken!!

I am so proud of myself right now thats is just ridiculous:rotfl2:

Just got back from the track.. As you all know I always walk about 5 miles with some jogging thrown in and the most jogging I've been able to do is 90 seconds at a time w/a max of 5 times.
Well, today I did the usual 5x at 90, and 1x at 100, 2x at 120, and then I RAN, not jogged RAN home.:cheerleader:

I found it much easier to run on the concrete around the track & on the way home than I do on the track surface itself.

I just bought my first running "outfit" (it was just Target Champion wear, but definitely a step up from my cotton T-shirt and gym shorts from the 8th grade). I'm curious about those running skirts. What are the advantages to them? Are they an escape from shorts riding up between the legs (mine always do causing my thighs to rub together :blech:)?

Hi Viking, sorry we wore you out so fast with all this workout talk

Can't wait to hear all the race reports coming up :listen: :thumbsup2:

Stimpy, I find it supremely difficult to lose weight like others on this thread. I found tracking my food, (carbs and calories) works for me. Exercise is an adjunct but it is definitely not the key to weight loss unless you can afford to spend hours doing it like the Biggest Losers do. I don't have that much time so I have to log my cals and I do it at Sparkpeople.com. There are lots of sites - Rozzie mentioned another one recently. Also, I will struggle to lose five pounds and then I can gain it all back in a few days and seriously have to lose it over three weeks. Just don't give up, you are so worth it! :goodvibes: :hug1: I loved Rozzie tough love motivational talk and the quotes - THANKS, ROZZIE, I needed that :D

Also, Jigger, can you share your secret to weight loss success too since you are the latest Peacock winner at the battle of the scales...:eating: pretty please...

Carrie!! We have missed you! Welcome back. Hope you have a great run tomorrow.

Lisa, I couldn't agree more that exercise is just a fraction of losing weight. You have to keep up with every calorie for sure. I have lost a lot of progress with the snacking I do. All healthy snacks in smaller quantities, not grazing as I have been. Sure Cliff kid chews are great, just not 4 a day. Sigh...back to the drawing board for me. I'm Back and I'm ALIVE! And I had a BLAST! :w00t:

What a very cool experience! I probably did 3.1 miles just pacing around my house in early excitement this am. :)

Arrived and was given my 1st packet! Cool Beans, I was able to attach my first bib.:yahoo: I had my T-shirt in the runnersworld bag but remembered nonos tip of do not put the shirt on until you complete your race!

I did not come in first or even close. Didn't come in last or even 2nd to last. That wasn't the point for me. I wanted to experience what a 5K is all about and learn what to do and what not to do next time.

Let me tell ya I learned ALOT of what NOT to do for next time!

**********Footwear is VERY VERY important!********

I do not need to carry so much equipment!:oweye: Lets see- Cell phone just in case, license in case they need ID, a power bar in case I need it, tissue in case I need it, bottle of water, car keys, sunglasses in case it gets sunny, jacket around the waist in case it rains... :silly:

And to RELAX! I had myself so worked up over this that it took some of the pre-fun out of it!

Dont panic if you see that you are heading towards this big giant longgg.... hill. You will make it! :)

People that run/walk are a very friendly bunch and come in all sizes and ages. :thumbsup2:

I finished in 46 minutes- No running- a few brisk jogs- but walked it. I am VERY HAPPY!

Thanks to Team Peacock- I would never have started this journey with out your words of wisdom, inspiration and encouragement! :goodvibes: :love30:

Just wanted to add a Go Team Peacock to Craig and Laura for tomorrow. Ya'll are going to do super!

Having just gotten home from completing my first 5k:yahoo:, I am hereby claiming the title of King Peacock (for the day)! :D

RACE REPORT:

Vitals: Official time not yet available. Garmin clocked 32:37.90 for 3.13 miles (plus 25.29 seconds for the 41.46 feet I covered from the starting bell to get up to the actual starting line). Average pace for the run: 10:25 / mile. Not bad, definitely under the 35 min. total I was gunning for since I knew hills might be an issue. Total Ascent was 800 feet and decent 813. BUT, there were several spots with brief 20+ % grades, both up and down. Hard on the legs when you haven't done serious hillwork before...

Anyway, we went out and around in several loops. During the run I saw a Cheeta keeping an eye on us, then some Kangaroos, and also some Caribu (reindeer?). Unfortunately, ue to construction the non-human Peacocks were on loan to other zoos... :boohoohoo: But I was excited enough that it didn't bother me. Some frontrunners got directed the wrong way and got back to the finish after less than 2 miles or something like that. They were DEFINATELY not happy. That's why official results and awards couldn't be given yet. Didn't cause me any problems since I was NOWHERE near that group! :rotfl2: I wasn't last by a long shot, that made me happy. :)

E came along with and took a bunch of pictures, I'll try and get some up later today. Also, I'm going to see my parents and some other relatives this afternoon at a last minute family gathering; I'm gonna' roll the dice and wear my new shirt. If that don't ask I'll bring it up...Then I'll be leaving that early to get ready for a friend's wedding tonight. BUSY DAY! Tomorrow I go to see "One Man Star Wars" with my first friend (and our wives!) so that oughta be fun, and tomorrow night I plan to collapse for a while. ;)

OK, gotta' catch up with other messages on the board to see what else has gone on since lunch yesterday...

:cheerleader: AWESOME jiggerj and way to go! :cheerleader: I forgot to mention some basics like that in my first post. Maybe got a tad too technical., Thus "Geek", right? ;)

A sincere THANK YOU to all of Team Peacock; I was thinking of you jiggerj and also the "I AM doing it" mantra while I was out.

Let's see, I was wearing my: dedicated Asics running shoes, New Balance "running" socks (brand new pair), Rebok (lined, non compression) running shorts, Runner's Reward Dry-Tek T-shirt, NikeFit Dry-Fit hat, and of course my Garmin Forerunner 305! The belt (fanny?) pack I was wearing had the junk I normally would keep in my pockets (Asthma inhailer, letherman, keys, cellphone [and pens + change holder + spare keys; those should have waited in the car. Oops!:oweye:]). I also tucked my sunglasses in the front when the clowd cover rolled over. No rain, so that was nice. Temp wasn't bad; I'm guessing 60s, didn't check for "official" numbers. What else am I leaving out? Radio Disney was providing entertainment and I got a instant tatoo on my hand.

E & I saw a number of other Garmins floating around out there as well, some older, some newer. More iPods, but a lot of GPSes just the same.

I am VERY glad I did it. Not sure when the next one will be but I'm sure there will be a next at some point. A trip to a cabin in Hawking Hills in September is being discussed with some friends on the weekend of a 5k there. Good change I might be entering that...;)

Other than the pending pics, did I leave anything out???????

I am allready eyeballing another walk/race at the end of May.... OMG- I think I caught the fever!

It's worse than crack! Just imagine where you will be a year from now. My first 5K was only last Sept, less than a year ago. I've done maybe 13 races since then? I am just so gosh dern proud of you, Queen Peacock. :goodvibes:

Oh Craig, I predict a sub 30:00 next 5K for you. Sounds like you had some major hillage to deal with. I bet you are going to be full throttle by the fall, passing me up like I'm standing still. Excellent job King Peacock! :thumbsup2:

I got up at 0300 to get in 6 miles before work today. Since it's my weekend to work, I have to be at work extra early. Tomorrow I'm just a slave to the beeper. I have to do 11, so think I will start at 0500, hopefully done around 0700. Usually that timeframe is same from emergency's. (knocks on wood!) Weekend call sucks but is part of the job I suppose. I was so glad to have gotten up early and got the run out of the way. Something about driving home and not having that hanging over your head. Plus it's already 90 degrees out too. I was starting to feel whiny pants about being tired today, till I read about the British soldier completing the London Marathon today. Wow, I don't think I'll ever have be able to utter a complaint and not feel guilty. He was amazing! Here is the story if anyone missed it.

Ahhhhh....I'm so starting to miss running....This is Day 9. I guess this is good practice for tapering for a marathon.

I did 12 min of slide boarding this morning. Was scheduled for 10, but didn't check my watch 'till 12 min. I really felt it today in the same muscle on the outside/bottom of each foot. It's a ski muscle. I've had this ache before. It's a good one. Strength is being built. :cheerleader:

Rozzie, going now to check out your link.

Wow, 9 days nono, you must be going:silly: At least you've got that slide board, seems like quite the workout.

My walk wasnt great this morning....I pulled a muscle in my right calf, warming up:oweye: I was running up the stadium steps (A few months ago, did you even think that would be a sentence I would type?) And I felt it pull....Stretched it out for a while and walked....I did an hour and 5 minutes....Less than 3.5 miles....I did run a bit, but it was so windy this morning, that I was huffing & puffing and having a hard time catching my breath:( Came home and slept for a while and luckily the calf feels ok now.

You are not alone Jen, my run this morning was less than stellar. Even though we started at 0500, I didn't have a dry spot on me when we were done. Hot hot hot. I actually had to literally ring out my clothes. Knees started talking around mile 10. The thing is it's all a part of life. Some runs are great, some are not great, and some just bite. Nothing in life beats a great run though, so I keep on plugging. :) Glad your calf is feeling better.

Nono, you have almost talked me into a slideboard. Maybe there is a cheap one on ebay or craigslist. :D

They are out there. I think either folks get one and will not part with it, or quickly discover it's not their thing. So, those that are available "used" have very little mileage on them. Plus, it's a frictionless system, so how much wear will one get anyways? So yes, used is good. Mine is used. It's awesome! :goodvibes:

I would LOVE to be there for the ToT race, I know a lot of us will be there, but alas, I cant go.:( Why cant I be independantly weathy so I can go whenever I want?
Well, if you are living that close, as my t shirt says Just Do It:D

Nono, too precious on D's presents. That little thing certainly has my heart in her pocket. :goodvibes: Too cool on Mr. N running it too. This is going to be a blast of a trip!!

Jigger, ha! I am bursting out laughing. Running cheap? I have spent more on running than I will ever admit too. Remember when you bump your mileage up, you have to keep on getting new shoes--$100 every 2 months for me just in shoes. Then there are off road shoes, body glide, skirts, shorts, fuel belts, fuel itself, supplements, running mag subscriptrions, every running book on market, personlized singlets, Garmin's, running Coach, sport bras built for "big" girls, fancy smancy ice pack wraps, massage appt's, oh then there are race fee's. :oweye: Expensive's to travel to races, etc etc. I think you get my drift. Of course I choose to spend this, but it's FUN! :D Just think, when Scott got into running, it all doubled!! Speaking of the TOT, we will be there with bells on.

Speaking of the better half, he has his first 40 mile week this week. I remember at the TOT race trip last year (he did not run), he was so excited to finally gone 3 miles when we went running the next day. Now he is doing 40 mile weeks! Lost 50 lbs and is in the best shape of his life. :thumbsup2:

Susie, sorry to hear about the toe. I bet you will be back full throttle before you know it.

Off day for me today. Monday's are my day off this summer. I never thought I could look forward to Mondays so much. ;)

Mama Gail, nono, all others running TOT. Ya'll registered yet? I am waiting a little while till I catch up on finances--next month sometime. I plan to register though for Rehoboth at the next pay period. (next week) Figure might as well register, I got plane tickets and a hotel room. I have a question regarding vitamins...I've been experiencing very sore legs...thighs & calves...I take a multivitamin nightly at bedtime & eat a banana every morning.
What vitamin should I add to my diet to help with ridding of the soreness? Vitamin E?

I got a ocean view room, I figure it may be my last time in Delaware. :D

Susie, instead of vitamins, why not try a foam roller to roll out the soreness? Don't get me wrong, nutrition is excellent, but if you are sore--your body is begging to get rolled out and worked on. Kinda like going to the problem to fix it then take a vitamin for maintenance. JMHO. :) Oh and for supplements, fish oil is excellent for everything. The only caloric liquid I can give up is the half n half in my coffee and I know I won't do that  Good luck in your quest - we like hot tea around here in the am...

Yes, running is very expensive! I even had to buy a special summer running outfit that isn't near as cute as my fall and winter running skirts stuff. I have to run covered because of sun sensitivity so I wear tights with my running skirts. For this summer so I wouldn't have to be a treadmill girl, I bought Solumbra running gear. The pants have vents all the way down so it feels like you are wearing shorts. I hope it works in the Alabama heat!

Rozzie is a nutrition goddess!

She told me awhile back about her protein powder to make smoothies. I went ahead and looked around. Got some, and finally got around to making one for breakfast. I got the Greens & Whey Vanilla powder. WOW! Does it make a smoothie!!!! THICK and not at all gritty. And filling. I put in about 2 tablespoons of yogurt, some cantelope and a banana to "fill it out" and I had to split one with Mr Nono.

The backstory to this is that I was complaining to her that I can't get my carbs/protein/fat balanced. Carbs are fine, it's too low protein and too high fat. So she suggested this. It might just be the secret key to getting my nutrition where it is supposed to be. :yahoo:

Thanks Rozzie!!!!

Love EArl Grey! Pretty much leave coffee to a Mickey D nonfat latte for special occassions. Part of my efforts to STOP the a-fib issues. The caffeine in teas never seems to bother me, tho it's true that coffee never bothered me in the usual way (not sleeping, getting antsy). It's funny, all someone has to tell is is "you CANT" and I'll do most anything to prove them wrong (esp if its a doctor, sorry, can't help myself).

I wonder how much we walked at DL this past weekend. Ran into a family on the tram back to parking that had been in the park 3 hours and registered 6.2 miles. Not a 'fit' looking family in the least: big dad, grandma and gramps and a tyke in a stroller. Why I mention it is that I had a huge blister between my toes from my thong Crocs and walking was painful to say the least. But we were in the parks for 13 hours that day..only break for eating and lots of back and forth DL to CA . If I 'forgot' about the foot killing me, I think my body was tired from walking and that means at least 12 miles...But I never really thought about it before. When I'm at WDW and have an AP, I don't think I walk nearly as much as when I'm on a ticket!!!!!

Skirts are much cooler and less bulky. However, if you get teh kind with teh built in compression pants, many of those ride up IMO. MM - I wear 6" compression pants under all my shorts to avoid teh chub rub. Helps imensely.

 I had been running in capri-length pants which does the trick, but then I remembered my sister made fun of my glaringly white legs last year and thought they could use a little sun.

Well, I went to Fleet Feet today to try and get new shoes. I always thought I was an 11 medium width in running shoes. Turns out I'm an 11.5, AA width--which of course they don't carry in the store. Go figure. I am looking forward to some new shoes, and hope they will help with some of the pains I get running (my sister was appalled to learn how old my shoes were) and to help with over-pronation.

And, I decided to run my first race--a 5K--Memorial Day weekend! I had planned originally to run one mid-June in southern IN, but this past weekend when I went home for Mothers Day, my cousin told me about a 5K in my hometown that will benefit a ministry she's involved in (and she invited me to go camping with her). So, I think I'm going to do it!

I think I'm jogging an 11-11 1/2 minute mile at this point. It's difficult to say exactly, as most of the time I'm running in a subdivision which is apparently so new that the roads aren't on mapmyrun.com, so I had to draw in my own lines. Today I ran in a park with an 1.2 mile circuit, and had to use my division () to determine my pace.

Priceless! :)

MM, yeah, it's sure nice when the stores carry more than medium widths, but that doesn't happen much except in big cities. My feet are a different size in the winter v. summer. So, I have doubles of favorite models of running shoes 8.5 narrow for winter and 9 medium for summer. Spring and fall races can cause me to end up running in very old, but well-broken in shoes...I'm not adventurous enough to run a race in new shoes (under 100 mi for a longer race, and probably 30 miles for a shorter race).

Rozzie is a nutrition goddess!
!

Nothing could be further from the truth! :rotfl2: Especially the goddess part. I do eat a couple of servings of fruit a day now, now thanks to my new found passion for smoothies. The perfect after workout drink. The protein is great for repairing broken down muscle fibers. Plus you get 2 fruit servings. So everybody get out those blenders and fire it up! I used frozen strawberries, fresh banana's, Dannon All natural nonfat yogurt, 3 heaping scoops of Soy Natural protein powder, plus about a tablespoon or two of honey. It is better than eating any cheater dessert by far. Reading the book nono got me (Periodization Nutrition for Endurance Athletes), I learned that I have looked at food wrong my entire life. I lived to eat. Well not anymore. It's eat to live. Or for the athlete, as the book says--Eat to Train, not train to eat. So every morsel I put into my mouth, I try to think how it will help my body to train. Granted there are slip ups, splurges, etc, but as a general rule I try to live by this motto. It helps me when I want that fast food crap, or some deep and greasy artery clogger. ;)

Stimpy, I would not be at all surprised if Sean ran that! Kids are fast! Like really fast. They haven't learned our lazy habits yet, and their bodies respond like second nature to physical activity. Heck, he may want to think about trying out for the Cross Country team in a few years. This may be exactly what will build him into the man he wants to be. :goodvibes:

Congrats MM on the decision to run the 5K. :thumbsup2:

Roz,

Is your powder the GeniSoy brand? Our local health food store carries it, but never has it when I am in there (tried again yesterday). I grabbed the Greens & Whey online for a steal and figured I could use both of them for slightly different flavors. I don't get enough greens either, so I figured the Greens & Whey, if it wasn't too disgusting, would help me as well. Imagine my surprise this morning when it tasted good, and not just "not disgusting." :woohoodance:

Mine is the Genisoy brand. Did you try Walmart? I was shocked to find it there, next to all the protein supplements in the health section. :fingerscrossed:

Well, another day I cant work out:( I have 2 sore feet, 2 sore ankles and 2 sore calfs....So I am doing no exercise of any kind because I dont want to risk an injury right before my vacation....If I feel 100% Saturday, then I'll probably walk/jog, but I doubt I'll be able to do anything before then.
I am beyond frustrated.
And yes, I have been icing & elevating even at work...(What a sight, lol)

Hi all! I haven't posted in awhile, but have been checking in to catch up every evening.

Jen, I know it must be frustrating, but I think your body is telling you it needs to rest a bit. And you know that you will need your legs for toting Dad around the World. When you get back, I bet you'll fall back into gear like you never even missed a day!

Signed up for my 2nd race last night... ;) It's another 5k, June 28th, and called "A Most Excellent Race".

http://www.hermescleveland.com/roadracing/events/mostx

No Disney that I'm aware of :boohoohoo:, radio or otherwise, but should be good none the less!

-----------

As for my one last weekend, they are NOT going to release official results because of the course problems and posting anything would be "too confusing". With a little pleading I was able to get these personal stats:
Chip time: 32:13.82
Gun Time: 32:46.19
Overall place: 179
Place in age group (30 -34 years old): 21

So not knowing total runners or an age group count makes it hard to tell where I actually was, but in 2008 they had ~590 total runners and 32 people in my age group and my time would have made me 30 of 33. I think it was the same course but am not sure of that... I've made a couple e-mails and calls to try and find this year's total runners & # in my age group; we'll see if they pay off! :fingerscrossed:

-----------

Finally, I don't think I posted this yet but told my relatives I ran said Zoo race later that day and:
My dad didn't think that was a bad time for my first race and that I might have beat my mom had she done it & that maybe we could all do a family race sometime.
My mom was proud of me for doing it and thought I did great.
My (younger & only) brother thinks it could be fun to go out training together (I think he said that he'll do 5k in under 16 min. as of a few years back when he would occasionally race his track & cross country kids so that could get challenging having him literally run circles around me, but I might give it a try) and/or run a family race as well.

So, I just might tell them all ahead of time about this one and see if any of them join me! Sure, my sister in law is also faster than me so I'll get a lot of people with my last name ahead of me in the results, but that doesn't necessarily mean it wouldn't be fun and I might be able to run with my mom for most of it and then out kick her in the end! :w00t: (My uncle did that in his first race, so there is precedent!)

Rozzie,

I am too lazy to go to Walmart. I just (and I mean just) ordered some of the Soy Natural powder from the same mail order place I get the Greens & Whey. I reordered that too. I figured having two types of protein powder is better than one (just like havng 6 pair of running shoes is bettter than 1 -- you know to keep the body safer ;) ).

BTW, I'm sititng here waiting for Mr. Nono and Renee to get back from a little 2 miler, and then I'm going for a 2 mile run. This is day 14. I'm sorry, I probably missed out, but is this your schedule from the article you posted the link to? If not, how did you determine this training schedule? I'm interested to know!

Well, it's from reading a bunch of stuff. And the concept of periodization is that you have a base then build through a cycle or two to peak for your key races throughout the year. One thing a lot of people are forgetting about is the time off factor (2-4 weeks). I think it's cause I hang out with a lot of old runners who are scared stiff to get slower that they don't take time off until injured. :oweye: So, I put in the time off for 2 weeks, with then 2 weeks of "play" running.

The idea of play for me is to run different lengths at different paces based upon what I feel like doing that day (kinda the anti-schedule). Then, starting June 1, I'm on a 25 week training plan to have me peak at my marathon race just before Thanksgiving.

Now to your question... :D

This will mark the first time I'm officially following anyone's plan. In general, what I did in the past was shorter runs during the week, with a long run over the weekend. Most times, I did 5 days on, 2 off, just because that's when I could get the time. General idea is not to move up your mileage too fast. General rule is 10%, but you don't have to be a slave to it...and most folks think it's OK to jump more than that as long as you don't step up again for a couple weeks after that. And, take cutback weeks (20-25% less mileage every 3-5 weeks).

My advice is to read read read. Running Times I like in print, so I get that magazine. Same for Marathon & Beyond. I read Runner's World online. I try to read a couple of running books a year. I haven't found a dud yet. There's always some nugget or two that clicks for me and helps me improve. I love that  feeling!

I should say that having been an athlete as a kid and teenager, it wasn't intimidating to me to have to coach myself in the beginning. Having been trained up in the past, I could feel my way along. Also, I don't get mad at myself when I screw up the coaching. So, I don't mind the setbacks I've dealt myself. I do think that at some point, I will likely employ the use of a coach. I am positive that it will provide a huge improvement to my performance.

Wow, thanks, that's a lot of advice that I never thought of. I guess I saw this as more something I'm doing for fun (to be honest, I kinda hate running, although it is nice to set goals and be able to achieve them--and I like my more tone body) because last year I thought "if there's ever a race when I'm at WDW I want to run it, not because I want to be a runner, but because I love WDW!" At the same time, I don't want to get injured. Already I've learned what a big difference a pair of shoes can make. And, I would like to get better. But when does the fun start:confused24:? . . .

That is EXACTLY why I started!!! :rotfl2: Now I'm somewhere with it starting to be fun on good days, but yesterday wasn't one of those (stopped after ~2.5 (fairly slow) miles) and this morning I ended up only doing 5 minutes on the elliptical... Ups & downs! Sooner or later I'll do my first Disney race (2011?) and I can't wait for it. ;) Tomorrow is iffy on weather; maybe Sunday I'll get out and run...

For me, getting better at something is a lot of fun. But that's me. Everyone's definition of fun is different. I think if you think about it for awhile, you can figure out how to bring your type of fun to the sport.

But, I would say, despite the differences in individual definitions of fun, the overall fun generally starts at your first race. That seems to be the consensus. Or your second race. :scratchchin: Esp. if you beat your first race's time...;)

I'm with nono on the after the first race consesus. I did my first 5K in Oct. of '08 and then did the Princess 1/2 in March. And I didn't start walking/running until June of '08. It is a lot of hard work and preperation but boy was it a blast to finish the 1/2 in March. Since then I have done a couple of 5K's and I'm doing one tomorrow. I'm not setting any records or setting the world on fire but that is not why I started walking\running. All I wanted to do was cross that finish line. I loved doing the 1/2 with my Team Peacock friends but the best race that I have done so far was a 5K a few weeks ago with my son and grandson. Hopefully we will be able to do some more together. I'm sooo looking forward to doing the ToT 13k in Oct. with my Team Peacock friends and another 1/2 in Nov. If anyone would have told me 2 years ago that I would be doing this I would have told them they were crazy.:silly: Happy running!!!:D

Bingo! Something about seeing hard work pay off is incredibly motivating. Plus seeing yourself improve is loads of fun. Somewhere deep inside all of us is a better runner/walker waiting to be tapped. We will never know our full potential till' we put everything on the line, dedicate ourselves 100% to it. I know I daydream a lot of where I could be in 5 years if I keep working like I do now. Now that's fun! :)

I am enjoying this month's schedule. All base work, no speed work, no track, no splits, no hill repeats---just nice easy running. Something about lacing up and not thinking of how fast I need to run, but just going out and running is very liberating. Especially since I got 6 on Sat, and 12 on Sunday to do.

Mama Gail, you have a amazing story to tell. You climbed many a moutain and accomplished every goal you have put in front of you. You should write the Peacock mission statement. :thumbsup2:

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:ain't that the truth!!!!! While I'm competitive, I prefer volleyball and tennis to get in my 'win' mode. I look at this as a way to get/keep my heart healthy. It fails (so far) to help me lose weight, but I know it will help me with tennis which starts soon!

I break in my running shoes by using them, don't know any other way :confused24: If they fit very well, they may feel great from the get-go. Mine sometimes rub on my ankle bone and have to get worn a bit to feel good.

Have a blast at WDW, Jen!!! Awesome on the five miles too - that really is a long walk/run girl!!

Yes, I am pretty crunchy granola too, nono!! Soy can contribute to hypothyroidism too and my mom and two sisters have it already so I don't need any help in that department. I finally feel comfortable in my sneakers. I actually did 2 miles on the treadmill today and didn't feel like I had to kick them off half way through. I think it's just from wearing them & using them for outside workouts that finally broke them in. Can't exactly kick off $100+ shoes a 1/2 mile from home ;)

So I did 2 miles today, not a good time but I did it...and like I said with my shoes on the whole time :rotfl2: I feel good afterwards and noticed today that my lungs seem stronger. It may seem weird thing to notice but since I have asthma, I can feel the difference. So I'm trying to focus on the positives!

Jen have a great trip!!! :goodvibes:

See, Stimpy, you are doing great....No, it's not strange that you are noticing that your lungs seem stronger...I certainly have noticed mine are, too, I couldnt be walking/running/jogging or any combo thereof, if I was still smoking:blech:
Proud of you Stimparoo:goodvibes:

Whether or not I should have, I went ahead and ran my normal schedule today--warm up, three reps of running for 11min followed by 2 min of walking, then cool down. I don't know if it was the shoes, or the fact that I did some calf stretches after my warm up (usually I just stretch after I'm finished), but my calves didn't feel tight, which was nice. I found I wasn't constantly holding my foot in dorsiflexion. I did have a new pain in the medial aspect of my knees, which, if it doesn't go away after several runs, I'm going to take my shoes back.

Tomorrow I step up to running 20mins without interruption (and according to my program, should be up to 30 mins by the end of the week--that's the 5K!).

I've never been a smoker and I don't have asthma, but I definitely feel my lung capacity has grown so much in just the 8 weeks since I started. I don't feel as short of breath, which feels odd, and sometimes makes me wonder if I'm pushing myself enough. . .

Just checkin' in to see how the racing Peacock's did. Was the race today or tomorrow? :scratchchin:

Great job Stimparoo, MM, Jen! You are at a great moment in your walking/running careers, as you will see improvement triple fold. :thumbsup2:

I have had no injuries, aches, pains, nothing for several weeks, maybe months?--until today. Did 6 today and felt weird all over. Every problem area I've had before all ached collectively at once. IT Band, Achilles, sciatica, etc etc. Still achy tonight, been icing, actually took some Ibuf since I feel it's some type of inflammation that is going on. Bad news is I have 12 to do in the morning. I am hoping it's just a freak thing and I wake up brand spankin' new. :fingerscrossed: If not, well it's going to be a long freakin 2 hours! :silly: If I start hurting (it's still achy now) I might have to cut it short. I am making the critical decision to go to bed with a positive attitude and see where that lands me.

Jen, wishing you a great trip! I wish there were some running area's by AKV that we could use. That is the one thing that is preventing me from staying there...if you get time do some snooping around and see if maybe one has appeared! Have a great time with your Dad! :goodvibes:

Was great seeing the nono's again today. :hug1:I didn't get any pics so you'll have to wait for nono and see if she can post what she took.

Lots of hills in this race and even with them I still came in with my best time for a 5K. Mr. nono did the 10K and had a great race too. On the drive to the race there was a misty rain and the fog was really bad. Was thinking that today was going to be my first run in the rain but mother nature was good to us. It was overcast and cool, so it really was a perfect day for the run. They had hotdogs, pizza, doughnuts, soft pretzels and beer for the post race refreshments.
