Just further proof that doctors and nurses make terrible patients! :rotfl2: Hope you are feeling better soon. :hug1:

Yep, there is a saying nurses make the worst patients!!!!! :silly:

Congrats Laura on the signing up for your first 5K! I agree with nono, I have met some neat people in our running community. Amazing how runners/walkers come from all walks of life. (no pun intended!) Can't wait to read your first RR! :goodvibes:

Congrats Laura! :cheerleader:

Rozzie, you take care of yourself! Being asthmatic myself, I've had some of those bronchial infections....they are horrible. Get well soon!!

I kind of hinted about sneakers and I didn't think Disney would let me run/walk in socks. Dh just asked why not? :oweye:

I finally beat 16 min mile...again not much but it is for me! I did 15:54 and I didn't think I was going to do well at all tonight when I started. That was my first goal....beat the 16 minutes :yahoo: So now I have to keep it up. Don't know if I like that kind of pressure :rotfl2: And I did it with 2 pairs of socks on tonight...I stole a pair of DH's too

nono....glad you are feeling better today and had a nice walk with Renee.

I signed up for the Valley Forge 3 mile walk yesterday. Then the week after that I am doing a 5K w/my son. My DIL was suppose to go but something has come up so Dave is going. My grandson might be going also so if he goes then I will stay stay with him. He loves to run so it should be a lot of fun if he does go.

I am so excited that our running community has grown here so nicely :yahoo:

Congrats on signing up for your first race, Jigger! That is so cool that you're already jumping out there!! :cheerleader:

Rozzie, be a good patient and do not walk too hard either. I can see you still pushing when you need resting  Hot tea can really be your friend to keep the coughing jags away. Regrettably, I have a lot of experience with this too :silly:

Sounds like good fun you have planned, Gail!

Stimpy, you crack me up!! I think DH may reconsider once you have all his socks held hostage :rotfl2: AND that is AWESOME about getting under 16 min miles - WOOHOO!!!!

We have a huge computer problem at home and I am on my laptop right now. So, wish me luck that I can get the priceless stuff still trapped on it!!!!! :(

My 2 personal favorites

"You can do it Lisa--don't die"---I can see my mother holding this up

"Beat Oprah"----this is actually how I got the courage to run a marathon, I figured if Oprah can do it, I can too! :fingerscrossed: I think I might personally request this sign in Jan.

Rozzie,

How ya feelin'? I am chuckling a little about you having to take a week off though...karma's funny isn't it? You weren't sure you could do it, and now, based upon this illness, you'll know you can take a week off and return to the sport just fine. :thumbsup2:

This article was originally published (http://coffeebetsy.blogspot.com/2008/06/runnings-gateway-drug.html)on June 19, 2008 by CoffeeBetsy (http://www.runnerslounge.com/profiles/coffeebetsy.cfm) on her blog by the same name.

http://bp2.blogger.com/_kRXSwUTJK6E/SFp5O7dDVII/AAAAAAAAAI0/kMh5QOXMJko/s200/Remy.jpg (http://bp2.blogger.com/_kRXSwUTJK6E/SFp5O7dDVII/AAAAAAAAAI0/kMh5QOXMJko/s1600-h/Remy.jpg)
In the movie Ratatouille, Remy the gourmand rat’s hero Gusteau lived by a simple philosophy: Anyone can cook. It may take time, patience, and hard work, but Remy learned that anyone – even a lowly rat – can cook.

If Gusteau had been a runner instead of a cook, he’d have been about fifty pounds lighter. No, wait… that’s not where I was going with this. If Gusteau had been a runner, I believe he would have said this:

Anyone can run a 5K.

I saw this philosophy put into practice last Saturday when I ran Race for the Cure. Over 9,000 people woke up early on this beautiful day, put on running shoes, and ran 3.1 miles. There were definitely some serious runners there, but there were also people who I’m sure were competing for the very first time.

Yes, new runners, we experienced veterans can tell that this is your first 5K. Maybe your running shoes are blindingly white and too new, or maybe they’re beat up and have clearly been kicking around your closet for a long time. Maybe you’ve pinned your race number on the back of your shirt, rather than on the front where God intended it. An even clearer sign? You’re wearing the race t-shirt. Veteran runners would not only never wear the shirt before finishing the race, but heavens: it’s cotton!

When I see someone running their very first 5K, I think, “Get behind me, loser. You’re not a real runner.” No, wait, that’s not it. Instead, I rub my hands together like a super villain and say, “You will be mine. Oh, yes. You will be mine.”

That’s because a 5K is the gateway drug to running. It’s how we lure you in. We promise programs that take you not from “a base level of mileage of blah, blah,” but from your couch to a 5K. Many 5K’s are for a good cause. After all, who doesn’t oppose breast cancer or want to support melanoma research? It is no coincidence that 5K’s tend to be flat – no need for pesky hills to potentially scare off any new runners. We want you to soak in the party atmosphere of the race, feel cool in your new t-shirt, discover the free cookies and popsicles waiting for you at the after-party… to say nothing of the awesome sense of accomplishment you get at finishing your first race.

With any luck, just a few of those new runners I saw on Saturday liked their first hit of the gateway drug. Maybe they’ll stick with that first drug, happily running weekend 5K’s… and maybe they’ll move on to the hard stuff. Either way, I’m happy. Runner's Lounge's Take it and Run Thursday (http://blog.runnerslounge.com/2008/06/take-it-and-r-2.html) wants tips for 5K's, and mine is simple: Anyone can run a 5K, and everyone should try.

Found this one at the Runner's Lounge.

Cool article Nono! :goodvibes: I do agree 5K's are the gateway drug.

No joke on the karma, funny how truth is more entertaining than fiction. ;)

I got to take one of the dogs to the Vet this afternoon, and thought we would go on a 2 mile walk just to get the blood pumping in the legs. I am going stir crazy, my body is craving it like crack.

Gail, I would love to do that Valley Forge one with you. Wow, what a amazing area of the country you live in.

Hey Stimpy, any word on if the Bunny is bringing shoes? :D

Gail, find me a flat marathon. We'll do the race, then spend the rest of the time seeing all the millions of things up there that is on my list. I am in a new search of the fastest marathons in the country. (and Disney is not a fast one LOL!) My coach approached me about trying to qualify for Boston in 2 years. At first I was , but I think I am going to go for it. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? Death? Sure, but I could buy my ticket out of here any moment for any multitude of reasons.

So here I go, having a month of active recovery, then the journey starts. We don't ever know what we can do till' we take the risk. That goes for all the new Peacocks too. We never want to look back on our life and wonder what would have happened if we really gave it our all? Would we have made it? I am so proud of everyone here. We are all out there, doing it. Which means half the race is already won, right? How many of us know people who always talk about "tomorrow", but we are doing it TODAY! Yeah us! :thumbsup2: And really, that is what being a Peacock is all about. We are not shy of our daily accomplishments, and are racing forward to our future dreams and goals. Just think where all of us will be in a year? It's a wonderful thing to daydream about.

Go Team Peacock! Now go kick some arse! :rocker:

Ahem.

Shamrock in Virginia Beach.
Ocean Drive in Cape May, NJ (HINT)
Steamtown in Scranton, PA

To name 3. All within a few hours of Gail. Well Shamrock's a stretch, but they have a walking half and full, and she should be there next March. (planning on working her over when I see her in Kennett -- the opposite of flat!)

Shamrock is in March
When is Scranton?

My only issue with doing Shamrock is that I am already signed up for Disney Full in Jan. Not a lot of recovery time for sure....mmmmn.

My Forerunner came in last night! It was raining this morning so after work I went outside and did 2 miles in 21:07... I saw that my pace was faster than I planned (again) but I didn't believe what it was saying; when I slowed down I didn't feel I was working hard enough... I know I will have to slow down to add distance, though. While walking in the driveway to cool down I changed the Running view to have a BIG pace across the top and then time and distance in the bottom area. That ought' to help!

I am doing the "Scuba For Diabetes (http://www.scubafordiabetes.com/)" fundraiser Sunday afternoon, so I don't really want to overdo things and get too sore doing exercises I'm not used to. Might elliptical the next few days; I'll have to see how I feel tomorrow...

Steamtown (Scranton) is Oct 11th weekend. I'm not ready for it this year...

You never know Rozzie. You might just need a week off and then maintain your huge base. Throw in a 20-22 miler 3 weeks before Shamrock, and you never know!

Craig, that pace is blazing hot! WTG! :D My best advice on getting distance up is make sure you could carry on a conversation while running. That is a sure fire way to see if you are working your body too hard. Keep up the great work, and good luck with your event this weekend!! Sounds like a great cause. :)

Well the phone rang this morning before dawn asking if I wanted another day off. We only had 20 cases and were looking for volunteers to stay home. Mmmnnn. Okay! ;) So another day of rest, feeling better. Took Honey the Greyhound on a walk to the bay last night while Scott did his track workout. Really nice to stroll along and spent some quality time with her. She loved the bay btw, I guess desert dogs do love water LOL.

Anyway, fever is gone. Going to catch up my runningahead forum log today, get some chores done and go...socialize at the local running group's training run tonight. I might wear my running shoes and stretch the legs some. I'll see how I feel. Confession time: I did register for the local 8K this weekend. How could I not? The race weather is supposed to be perfect, it runs through the antebellum neighborhoods, and.. and.. and.. it's like the last 8K of the season. Don't worry I don't plan to overdo it. Just run a nice relaxing pace. It's only 4.8 miles and I was orignially scheduled for 10 miles. My coach thinks I should just go and see how I feel. Start feeling like crap, walk. I have taken 3 full days off.

Mama Gail, you understand, don't you?

You are so right! He needs some more walks for sure. I did get a no-go from our Vet though about him being my running buddy. Turns out the sighthounds should never be hauled for endurance, evidently they can have heart attacks if pushed for too long. Even if they look like they are enjoying it. :(

So that would make Angel the perfect match for your running buddy. :dog5: I would think that the Border Collie part of her could last. Heard they are a high maintenance breed because they need a lot of exercise. I would imagine that all of the herding breeds would be like that. But you also have the problem of the nasty humidity where you live so it's not going to be easy to find any breed that will be able to last a long time running without any rest stops.

Last summer, I hosed down Renee before we started our runs and kept her under 5 miles. Seemed to work. Also, she has one of those dog "chillows" that she would flop on post-run on the porch...Oh crap. I forgot, she ate a hole in it towards the end of the summer, and we couldn't patch it. I wonder if they are on sale anywhere....

Kimberly,

One trick that I used to speed up my pace I read about over on the DIS Wish boards.

Start with your walking and figure out how many steps you take in a minute. Now, without worrying about how FAR you are walking, try to add more steps to that minute. When you are at a good comfortable pace with the added steps, then strive for a few more. Eventually you will quicken your pace which will cause you to walk faster.

Your stride size isn't what matters at this point. Work on speeding up how many strides you take in a minute. This is what will get you going faster. Our tendency is to focus on how far per minute but apparently doing it the other way around works better for most.

Sadly Angel has developed some hip problems that makes her achy. I do walk her and get her out a lot to try to ward off any further spiraling down. She is 8 now and I think if I did it when she was young she would have been great. I can't believe she is that old. :( Okay not going to think about that. Lalalala.

We put together giant puzzles in the bottom of an honest to goodness Olympic size swimming pool's diving well. I think this will be my 5th time doing it... I got more than the minimum donation, so that's cool. :)

On another note, it was a nice night and the weather is supposed to get yucky for the next few days, so I decided to go for a run. I pushed myself and did 3.16 miles (5.09k!!!) in 34m 19s. :cheerleader: I tried to slow a bit but much under 11 min. / mile just feels funny to me. Wore the Forerunner's heart rate monitor; I averaged 148 bpm. I even had a bit of a kick left in me for the last tenth of a mile- just thought I'd try it to see what might happen if & when I enter a 5k... :w00t: Only problem is a bit of Thigh Chafing. Maybe I need to buy some Lycra? New problem I never had on the elliptical!

One last thing, but the most important- the kids are home and fine. No problems at the vet, and actually it was only Baby (my cat) who was anesthetized and had her teeth cleaned. Izzy (E's dog) just got some booster shots, etc.

Not sure about drug stores (when I entered it at Walgreens, a "Wet" product came up - which is about a different sort of personal lubrication), but you can get it at any running store or sports store. Do you have a Dick's, Sports Authority, etc around?

Great suggestion- there is a DSG about a mile from my house! :silly: You would think they would be the type of place to have THAT kind of lube vs. Walgreens based on the store names though, wouldn't you? :rotfl2: {Oh geeze, I sound like :viking:there!} DW also thinks I might want to try some bicycle shorts (perhaps under my generic cotton ones I elliptical in so I don't scare the neighbors too much? :oweye:), so I might look for both their over the weekend. How can it be wrong when it feels so good? ;) I got passed by the fast pack-- (it was our local running club's weekly group run)---in that pack was my age group's leading contender. Great shots Roz....I didn't get the CD, just a few pics cause half of them were of me at the finish line. Only need one of them. I have to scan them and then I can post. I love the one I got of Lisa & I at the castle. I didn't get mine taken at the finish but I will make sure I do at the end of the ToT.

Hope you are feeling better. Good luck tomorrow, but don't over do it!!!!

Oh, Gail, are you gonna share that one with me...pretty please with a tiara on top?? LOL!:goodvibes:

I scored a cool Champion tech singlet at TJ Max for $5 last night. Love it! :)

Yes! Here's my 2 cents for those who will be getting new gear and are new to the running scene... It is amazing to me what ends up in the "activewear" section of TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls... Real stuff from Nike, Adidas, etc. Usually not in quantity, but if I can find stuff with two toddlers flipping around/on/off me, you have a pretty good shot of finding stuff too!

Target's C9 stuff is good -- with a caveat. For the summer sun, heat and humidity, I find that it is nowhere near as good as the higher quality name brands. That doesn't mean I don't have C9. I do. Just don't wear it for about 16 weeks out of the year. No biggie. In fact, my C9 items are my favorite spring/fall things.

Now, ebay. I used to like it for activewear, but I swear (no proof) I was sold one of the best Adidas knock-offs ever. It's a white singlet with the typical 3 stripes down the side. It looks absolutely authentic. However, the thing is an oven. I look like a nut outside in 25 F weather wearing a white singlet, bare arms, pants hat and gloves :rotfl2: ...but it truly holds that much heat. So, I don't do ebay for activewear anymore.

Online, Joe's New Balance Outlet really knows what a "sale" means! Sportsbasement out of S.F. also sometimes gets some great deals to its online store (If you ever get the chance, visit one of their stores in San Francisco -- awesome place esp. if you are into multiple sports).

OH and yeah, use your items from other sports! I have used bike gear, ski gear (frequently), etc. Not everything crosses over, but some does.

Back to running tomorrow. I haven't missed it a bit this week, meaning my body hasn't craved getting out there and running. However, I have finished reading 2 of my running books and spent every night reading online in bed. So, intellectually, I must be missing it. :D

I made a seperate post of this, but it deserves to be here also:

Q: Doctor, I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... don't waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!! .... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable!!! It's the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape!

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

AND.....

For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.

1. The Japanese eat very little fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

3. The Chinese drink very little red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine
and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

5. The Germans drink a lot of beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.

CONCLUSION:

Eat and drink what you like.
Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Great job Professor Viking. Cracking up at the English kills you thing. ;) Seriously it's amazing how unhealthy Americans are compared to the rest of the world.

Love the pic Gail and Lisa!!!!!! I think my favorite of the entire race.

Well 8K is done. Perfect weather, cool and crisp with a north breeze. Fashion--teal/blue RS with white singlet. I decided to just go for a PR from my 8K last year--which was 50:50. That means I was going to run a conservative race this year and not overdo it. (so I could be in Mama Gail's good graces :D) Well that was until I ran into my Coach that had his famous clipboard and reported that he was expecting me to run a 08:50 pace. Good thing I brought my HRM! I had grabbed it to keep a eye on my HR since I am still on a steroid for the lungs. I told myself I would try it, but if I got above a safe range I would pull up. Well I must be in better shape than I thought, as I did fine. (did have one coughing attack after I finished...but okay now) So I decided to see how much I had in the tank and see if I could make my splits. Yep! Came in around 43:40, took about 7 mintues off my PR. Beat my projected pace by a few seconds. :) Funniest thing was my Coach was "calling" the finish line with the microphone and when he saw me, started yelling my name into the mike and then yelled for all of mankind to hear "I know you have another gear---I said kick it!". Just the boost I needed. He drives me nuts sometimes but I swear he is the best money I have ever spent on myself.

Scott did great too, and he met a new running partner that is also one of coach's clients. She runs his exact pace, maybe a little less--and he was assigned pacing duties before the race. Well just the thing he needed as he had a great race. 45:42! So they agreed to meet up at races and pace together---which really makes a huge difference, or I think anyway. We all decided we are going over to the Mississippi coast for another 10K at the end of this month. Oh nono ---she has done the Shamrock and swears Scott and I must attend. Says it's very fast. So a new race traveling buddy to share expenses is found, yahoo! :driver:

Yea sure, listen to your coach and not Mama Gail!:rotfl2: Glad you made it though the race without a coughing spell. It's so weird how you don't start coughing until after you are done running. It was doing that to me last year when I was training after I came home sick from Disney.

Congratulations on your PR. And tell Scott Congratulations too!

So, I guess that the Shamrock is in for next year then.

Oh, I forgot to ask if anybody got an e-mail from Disney to take a survey about the Princess race. I got it a few day ago and just finished. Made sure I told them that I was NOT happy with the course change and the post race food.

I don't know for sure about the Shamrock for myself. I might have to save that one for 2011, or another similar one near you for that timeframe. I would love to do it, but the logistics of time off from work may hinder me. I just need to quit my job and concentrate on running! :D

I will second nono on Joesnewbalanceoutlet. I have gotten running skirts there for $11! Tanks for $8! That is almost 50% cheaper than Target. Also agree on the C9 wear. Great winter, not so great summer. Summer requires special consideration down here. I might try that UA heatgear some people swear by down here. Buy one singlet and just see if it's worth the extra $$$. I think this summer is going to be the year I decide to say screw it and run with no top, bra only. I finally found a bra that is supportive and covers. Moving Comfort, the fiona bra. $$$, but OMG, what a difference. The girls hardly move a inch. ;)

The green top I wore to the Princess is UA heat gear Rozzie! Everyone always thinks I must be so hot in long sleeves but I was comfortable. Well I WAS going to post that I ran a whole mile...well, jogged a whole mile, but then I saw Rozzie's time for 8k when sick and I've decided to keep my mouth firmly shut about it.

While I enjoy hearing ya'll talk about running, I do NOT want to be a runner. for lots and lots of reasons that work for me. But I love walking fast and so that's really what I'm 'training' for. To do the 5k in under the alloted 45 minutes is all I care about. So my training will be in getting my normal walking pace back (4mph) and then a 5mph running pace to do maybe in the middle.

Must say that I LOVE using my tennis skirts for running. And thanks to running skirts becoming the thing, tennis skirts are now MUCH cheaper...they may actually BE running skirts for all I know, but I'm loving the new cheaper price. Anyhow, they are perfect for running, walking AND tennis. I never liked biking cuz I hated the way bike shorts stuck to your every part, (also my butt hurts) but you know what i mean...not at an age or weight to go out in public with hardly nuttin on. So my tennis skirt feels great, doesn't stick, and doesn't show all my bootee!

It's all relative CB. You should be proud of every accomplishment you make. That is what the peacock thread is all about. Every step forward is a step away from where you were yesterday. I remember a time where I could not go up a flight of steps without getting winded. As for being a walker and not a runner, I think that is great. There are racewalkers out there who kick my BUTT. Robert from DisneyRunning is a racewalker and has done a full marathon in 5 hours. That is hauling arse! I hope to run my first full in 5 hours.

I do love running in skirts, but do still run in shorts on Track night. My skirts tend to slip some when sprinting and considering I get yelled at for even looking at my watch, can you imagine the grief I get if I am having to adjust my skirt from slipping LOL. Skirts are a g*d send in the summer, so much more cooler than shorts, IMHO.

Which brings me to another goal of mine. I have got to learn to run without my Garmin--or at least learn to race without it. Today's race showed me how inaccurate it can be in shaded areas. Way off. Luckily I had my track watch I was keeping splits on. I need to know inside my head what each pace feels like. I noticed too all the top placing runners race without them. Ummmm. I need to think about all of this. :scratchchin:

Oh, I forgot to ask if anybody got an e-mail from Disney to take a survey about the Princess race. I got it a few day ago and just finished. Made sure I told them that I was NOT happy with the course change and the post race food.

Yes, I did receive it. Wasn't the first question something like "Why did you sign up?" My answer was: Because of the course...before it changed....

I did a mini cost/benefit analysis for them v. other races showing where I can run 3 races (2 halfs and an 18 miler) for the cost of their single entry fee. And with a dull course and no more food than I'd get at those other races, their pricing is out-of-whack. :scratchchin:

Maybe I just don't get the attraction, but with all the pretty areas in WDW, running down a highway and through parking lots isn't magical. Even with a few characters out there. Cause, I can get pictures with the characters when I'm dressed better (and showered!). Heck, I don't even have to go in the parks to do that. It certainly isn't worth the hefty race fee to me.

I really do think they could offer a race that is worth the money. Prettier course route and gee, maybe featuring food from a couple of the on-site restaurants through the chute would be a good idea. Maybe a couple that could use some promotion and generally have reservations available for day of seating...:eating:

Is it really this hard people?

mickeyndvcfan

Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. As such, I didn't give them the idea about using the post-race food to showcase the restaurants. :D

I might have also gone on a mini-diatribe about Title 9 happening within my lifetime, and forcing a women's race to identify only as princesses was well, at best, quaint colonialism...I even referred them to Mary Poppins to learn about suffragism...but I think I erased that part. :rotfl2:

How often should I be walking/running on TM? I've been trying to do it atleast every other day. Should I be doing it daily? I'm only doing about 30 mins a day right now. I am just so dern proud of you!!!!! :cheerleader: You know, you should really consider signing up for the Half. I mean you are almost up to 3 miles and you are still 9 months away. You can walk the whole thing if you want. You get a super cool medal, and maybe even kick Mr. Stimpy's butt. No pressure of course. I come from the line of thinking of "dream big, prepare well." Just mull it over, but not too long as the Half is probably pretty close to closed. :p (this time last year it was full, I guess a sign of the economy) If you are wondering who would watch the kids, I am a nurse and certified in child CPR. I've been told that I have flashes of responsible behavior when the need arises. ;) Mama Gail trained for her first Half in 9 months and did amazing!

Oh to answer your question, I think rest days are important--especially when you are starting out. I think doing it every other day is awesome. If you want some time off the TM but still moving forward, maybe do some time on a exercise bike on alternate days with still 1 rest day a week. JMHO.

Kimberly!!! That is just so great :yahoo:It would be good for your bod to do some crosstraining like maybe yoga. I don't think it would hurt you to do 5 days a week though, if it feels good to you. I usually work out doing something (treadmill or outside run, biking and strength work) and have one full rest day per week.

Didn't. Just scratched the 6 right off the calendar when I woke up from my nap and everyone was out on the back porch. Peachick? Pleazzze. You are a P-E-A-C-O-C-K.

Oh you can booze. Scott and I's new running friend is taking us "hashing". I bet you have a group in your area. Hashers are everywhere. Someone marks a trail with flour and you try to follow it, in a big running group. "Pit stops" are made along the way at outdoor bars/people's front porches. I plan to do one or two, and break up the hard core training with fun. One thing I have learned is that runners DRINK! I just don't drink a lot anymore for hydration purposes. Really the only time I drink now is at post race parties---where the longest line is for the keg, at 0900. ;)

Nono, don't sweat it! One thing I learned this week is that we can take time off, we should take time off, and we bounce right back. You couldn't have asked for better training weather! Sounds so much like my life.

Nono....I 'd like you to consider trying something a friend of mine swears by. I'd try it myself but have been fortunate to not get sick this winter (yet). This is supposedly guaranteed to make you feel better...yep, I knowit sounds super weird:

Take a bath and even better use Epsom salts. Then, put some thinnish cotton socks in cold water and UGH put them on your feet. Then, put thick wool socks over them and go to sleep. When you wake, the congestion should be gone. (or at least mucho better.)

I guess the theory is that the hot...cold....hot helps with circulation and heats your body up so it fights the infection.

I had a bit of a set back today. Jogged my mile easy peasy but then decided I needed to ramp up the speed for a few minutes. Felt fine til I was done and then WHAP...a-fib attack that kinda scared me some. My pulse was racing between 80 and 200 and back again...but only for about 10 minutes and then I was fine.

I don't feel much different jogging at 4mph or 5mph except for the 'girls'. The bounce just plain hurts. So i'm going to have to tape the suckers! (well, maybe not, but regular bra ain't working) . My kid is sending me a heart monitor thingie (a band , she says, that you wear under the bust???? and it shows up on a watch thingie????) Do you have any idea what she is talking about?

A funny story: my dog Hannah has long been terrified of the treadmill. Yep, I tried to walk her on it one day and she hasn't trusted it since. Anyhow, lately, she seems to want to walk 'with' me on it. She patiently stands right beside it and wags her tail! It's awfully cute.

Rozzie
04-06-2009, 04:29 AM
CB, it is probably something similar to a Garmin she is getting you. May not have the GPS, but my HRM on it has the band I put on my chest. You know, have you talked to your doc about exercise? Are you at least taking a Aspirin a day? I would be weary of pushing too much till' you got something done about the fib. All I am saying is be careful. I am sure Hannah is smart enough, but I would hate to have to depend on her to call for help. ;) Too cute about her standing near the TM, Angel does the same thing. Sits and stares and watches the whole time while I'm on it.

I am becoming obsessed about socks- Mother daughter day today so will be going shopping- :) Pick up running skirt too- :)

One of the many pluses of working at a tennis and fitness club is chatting with all the people that come in- Woman came in yesterday and she was talking about the "Kenyons" ? (huh???)She also encouraged me to get off the treadmill and get some real road time- Weather is finally breaking so cant wait to hit the pavement. Especially now that I have my new handy-dandy ipod the kids gave me for my birthday! They set me up and guess what song they put on first????

Ahh, a multi-topic post from me. Shocking, I'm sure! Got two real questions, each just above a "??????????????" to (hopefully) make this easier to follow! :silly:

Yes! Here's my 2 cents for those who1 will be getting new gear and are new to the running scene...

So I went to Dick's and bought a stick of Body Glide (Sorry lllovell, but :viking: talk or not I felt no need to
adjust regarding it, but I most definitely WAS smirking, if not laughing out loud! Then again, part of that may be because I was at work... ;)) [$9.99 BTW, it's cheaper from the online link but this way I could try one and see what I thought before having to either pay shipping or make up a large order...] + a pair of "real" (lined) running shorts and a quick drying spandex blend "boxer brief" thing to try under regular shorts.

BUT, I'm still pondering a shirt. They had special fast drying Nike ones (and other brands) for $20-30. I'm not too worried about the money to try ONE, but does it really make that big a difference vs. a cotton T-shirt if you aren't all that fast? I'm almost positive I've seen my dad run long races in generic Ts years ago, but my mom frequently did not. Does gender play a role here?

??????????????

Also, I was eyeballing a race at the Cleveland Zoo that is coming up May 9th- http://www.runwildforacure.com/. I saw my parents Saturday and it turns out THEY were considering it as well, despite not having raced for something like 2.5 years! Do I dare enter a 5k that they'll be at for my first one? Despite my previous angst that I've expressed on here, I just might. Without going into details (I decided to duck behind the fact that there is also a 1 mile event) I brought up the topic of pace. Hopefully I can beat (or at least tie) my mom; she runs in the 10 to 11 minute mile range these days on training runs. My dad was commenting about running marathons (in his heyday) in the 6 min. / mile ballpark, so even if he's slowed down a LOT my chances of keeping up with him in a month are as "null" as the resort names being listed for me on DVCMember.com! :rotfl2:

Assuming I DO actually do it (I'm leaning that way at the moment), what kind of time would I need to get to play "king peacock" for a day? Am I elligible for an honor like that in my first race? It will by definition be a new personal best! :D <OTOH, it will also be a personal worst!!! :oweye:>

Ok....I'm finally going to post this....I was ashamed to last week....but here I go...
I totally blew-off working out last week....I went to my girl's weekend....didn't walk or run....just sat on my butt and drank and ate all weekend...then last week I was sick for 2-days...and then was just a lazy a$$. I'm going back today...kick myself out of this slump before going to WDW on Sunday. I'm hoping that this will motivate me to do some non-park walking/running at SSR during the week...to help me stay on track and not be tempted to overeat.

Ok, I feel better now that I've told you guys....I'm still in it....just feel off the wagon.

Multi-part answer:

1. Shirt -- Are you planning on running in the sun in the summer? If so, try one. Otherwise, you can certainly get away with cotton -- it just gets wet and stays wetter that's the only issue. As you go longer in your training runs, it might matter for your comfort. I do wear cotton for many of my shorter runs as long as I'm not going to be in heat, humidity and sun...

2. By completing the race you will indeed be KING PEACOCK as you will be setting your first personal record!!!!!!! :yahoo:

3. Race -- don't race against your parents. Run your race, or run together, but don't race against each other. Y'all aren't 5th graders, and given the past history, I just think this would be a bad idea. After you've established yourself as a runner, then a grudge match with bragging rights would be fine. But my friend, you are a fledgling runner. Let's set you up for success!!!!!

OK, you are mistaking this thread for a "feel good" forum where we blow smoke up your butt for your guilt. Not in this dual-gender locker room, woman!

OF COURSE YOU ARE ASHAMED! You went out and partied :biggulp::biggulp::biggulp: and thought you could suck it up and still work out all week afterwards. And what happened? Your bod crapped out on you. Happens. You aren't as young as you used to be. Well except Rozzie. :p

Disney Geek: I don't know nuttin about racing, but here's a thought. Find out if there is any maximum time allotted for finishing the 5k. (I believe Disney allows 45 minutes for it's 5k, but maybe that's so the parks can open on time.) . Then find a treadmill and just walk at a comfy speed for 3 miles and see how you feel. If walking 3 miles even at a slow speed is easy, then the race itself will be a fun experience and I'm sure that you will get into the 'race' feeling and do it much faster than your slow walk.

Wow...your 'rents are amazing! I can't even imagine a 10 minute mile.

Roz: yes indeed I am now taking an aspirin a day!!!!!!!!!!!Maybe that's why I never get sore no matter what I do unless I'm sore from being sick. And no, I love my doggie, but I don't think she'd be able to get help if I fell off my TM:rotfl2:...she and the cat would be on top of me when meal time came however. Maybe I should put a cell phone or a 'fallen and can't get up' in a tennis ball...She will always retrieve tennis balls!!!! I will PM you about a-fib stuff tho I know you will worry anyway. I admit I'm a bit worried myself, but then, that's life I guess.

Laura, you will lovelovelove running skirts. BTW, does DIsney have any rules re running gear? Does one HAVE to be wearing tennis shoes of some sort or is it up to the runner/walker?

Okay all you runners out there: You, and my love for all things related to Disney Parks have inspired me to run (gulp!) in the 10K Race for the Taste Oct 11! I have never been a runner (in fact, generally speaking, I detest it), but after reading your inspiring stories, and hitting a plateau in my weight loss plans, I'm going to give it a try. So far I have been trying to build up my endurance for running by progressively walking shorter distances and jogging longer distances. So far so good! Everytime I want to slack off, I remind myself of my Disney goal, and I've been able to kick my own butt (however, it's only been a week  so, not enough time for the novelty to wear off).

I've been following this plan where I walk/jog every other day, but am thinking I should do some strength training on my off days. Any suggestions?

Also, does anyone else's neck hurt when jogging? I don't know if it's because I've been sleeping in a different position (I'm trying not to sleep on my stomach as much because I've awakened two mornings recently with a totally puffy face), but trying to hold my head up (and still, I guess) while running makes the back of my neck really sore (Already I'm planning for a spa trip after the run!) though the rest of my body seems to be doing pretty well.

I'm hoping to get my feet wet with a local 5K mid June (maybe some more during the summer, but I don't see any more dates listed yet) so I'm not quite so green for the 10K in Oct.

Any suggestions/help/tips/etc is greatly appreciated!

New PRs, slackers, non-adjustments while purchasing Body Glide and new faces - quite the week!

Geek - I know you have a history with your parents but give it a shot as an adult. Your relationship has changed so hopefully this has changed as well. If not, tell them! You don't have to hurt their feelings but if you need a different sort of support, you have to let people know.

I love how nono thinks, talks and feels about running, cheering, etc. She knows what works best for her and exploits it. Obviously Rozzie and her coach are in that same place! She responds to what he gives to her. You will find that dynamic in your family if you discuss it.

Started walking again this past weekend. I hate being fat. Even if I never meet any great times, etc I am tired of fatcity and am planning and executing my escape. One day at a time is a good plan but doesn't work for me because I can always convince myself that tomorrow is another day (the day to start X or the day to not eat Y, etc). Just do it is a better kick in the britches for me.

Izzy (our Puggle) actually has her own treadmill and can do 20 minutes at 4 MPH on days when she is all ramped up but the weather is bad. We have two TMs, my elliptical, and the weight machine in one of our "bed" rooms. DW planned to use the one 'mill alongside Izzy, but she never really got into it and prefers Curves. Oh well; at least we got got Izzy's off EBay as a local pickup for only $80 or so! The other cost cost more, but wasn't TOO horribly painful and I've used it occassionally and plan to more when "the weather outside is frightful" (and it sounds like the rest of this week will be ugly for us; snowing last time I peaked over my cubical wall & out a window...

Colorado Belle = Actually in one of my ramblings I mentioned that I did a 5k training run in under 35 min. last week, so I know I can do the Zoo run if I choose too. To all of the newcomers I just want to say that you have come to the right place for info, support and the occasional kick in the butt when needed. I would never had made it to the finish line of the Princess 1/2 without everyone here. Like Roz always says, this is a journey, and you couldn't find a better group of people to take your journey with.

Craig...go and do your 5K for you. Don't worry about how fast you are going...just finish. My first 5K last year I came in dead last. Everyone was over having there post race goodies and I had to go find the guy keeping the time. Long story short...my first race ever and I got a medal for 2nd place in my age group. MM---Congrats on your decision to run the 10K! I think 10K distances are a animal all to themselves. They are far enough where you have to train for them, but short enough where you can comfortably complete the training in a shorter time span and less probability of getting a injury. To be honest, I love the Half distance best so far. Everyone will have their favorite distance, I know people who just specialize in 10K's and ROCK IT. I am very proud of you. Remember you can do this!! We will be with you every step of the way.

Jigg-I don't run with a IPOD either. I find the music almost distracting. Just don't let the music set your pace or mood, be your own person in your run. Also they are dangerous to be out on the road with, and a lot of races do not allow them. I never heard of anyone getting pulled from the course with them however.

Craig--agree with everyone's advice here. Run your own race. Really racing is racing againist yourself. As soon as you get your first 5K down, the fun and excitement will be improving your time, over and over. It's the healthiest sickness you will ever have! ;)

CB, I'll send you a PM when I can have a few minutes to put some thoughts together. Just know this, everything I say and do is out of love and friendship. :hug1: Just want you safe and sound. You are a very wise woman and I know you will do what's best, after all you are the only one who knows your situation 110%.

Susie--Get to it girl! Should I tell you what my coach says? Mmmn, maybe I'll reframe. Just know we have all been there, done that, got the tshirt. The important thing is that you will never live last week again, and you got a whole new running future ahead of you.

Soooo I'm thinking of heading to N'awlins this weekend for the big bad Cresent City 10K. Still thinking, about to see if there is any more room at the inn now. :fingerscrossed: Lots of the running group is going, should be a looong night though before the gun starts. Mmmn. New Orleans and racing. A new combo for sure!

FYI- I personally do NOT run with one. I find when running it is enough for me to kinda' clear my head, at least so far. Unusual for me, too- I tend to be the restless type and often program to music, have the TV when I websurf, etc.

As for Elliptical & Treadmill time, for that I like to watch DVDs (especially Parades, Fireworks and Fantasmic) from: http://www.jefflangedvd.com/shop/

Not sure if anyone else is into those but I have ~7 I think and I find 4 or 5 good for making indoor workouts pass along faster! (One per day's workout; most of them are around an hour each and I'm definitely NOT up to 5 hours of straight exercise! :rotfl2:)

Craig, do it :cheerleader:

Soozaay, get back to work girl! You can do it.

Ipods, I'm the opposite, I find I do much better with mine on. It distracts me from looking at the clock etc. Plus it seems to make the time go faster and when there are certain songs on, it makes me more energetic. I made an excercise playlist that I have to tinker with...take off a few songs I though would work that don't, add some. I found quite a few surprising workout songs too! :confused24: Some of The Who songs really work well, like Won't get Fooled Again.

May have to head to the running store tomorrow for shoes. No more shin splints but the balls of my feet are starting to hurt from rubbing against the socks & treadmill. I thought walking/running was supposed to be a cheap way to excercise??

Thanks for the encouragement but I'll start with the 5K first and see how that goes! Besides, if I leave my kids with you Rozzie for the half, I may not come back for them :rotfl2:

Yeah, don't go trying to talk our running mate out of the 5k! We NEED her!!!!
Stimp, I must have soles of leather as I most often walk/run with just socks and sometimes even nothing (on my FEET Viking) at all. Learned I've got to support the girls, but not doing so hasn't made my neck hurt. What might help is to use your warm up time on the TM to double check your posture and get your head relaxed in 'neutral'. I watch TV when I'm on the TM..otherswise I drive myself nuts thinking about the time.

Ok...I'm walking during Dancing with the sTars tonight. Put my running skirt on at 11am and STILL havent' done my time. Found out they are showing the house tomorrow so I have to make an effort to clean. Sigh.

Well it's official. I headed to NOLA for the 10K. Got a pretty decent AAA rate, $132 that we are splitting with someone else. The hotel also holds the expo, so it makes it convenient as we are going to be cutting it close getting there before the expo closes. This is soooo unlike us, we always talk about doing things like this--but never do it. It will give us practice traveling to out of town races, since we are seriously putting around maybe traveling NORTH in Nov to meet up with some peacocks. ;)

Kimberly...thank you for being the 100th person to kick my ass back into gear! I did 45 minutes at the gym tonight....30 minutes treadmill, 15 minutes bike....and feel great...just like I remember! :oweye:

I have to break-up my "distractions"....at the beginning of my workout...while on the bike & treadmill, I watch the tv that's on the equipment....time flies...but when I hit that "wall" where I really need to push myself, I go to my ipod & my workout playlist (all rock...heart-pumpin' music) and it not only gets me past that wall, but I end up going a little more. Now, that being said, I think when I start hitting the road, I will go without the ipod...especially once I'm done with C2K and not needing the reminders of when to run/walk...if for nothing else but safety....hearing vehicles, people, etc.

The ferry is one of the co-sponsors, and they have those shuttle buses they run during the summer from the ferry to the outlets. Just about the same distance...

Wow, the Peacocks are hopping today and I missed it all!!!! I worked like a dog today :boohoohoo: and I just caught up!

Stimpy, you will have to buy shoes and yes, they lied about running being a cheap sport!!! You should see what we spent on hubby in the last month and I don't have to worry that he will buy multiple running skirts :D

MM and Stimpy, think about and pay attention to your running form. I think your neck might hurt because maybe you are attempting to run with a straight up posture. Actually, you will feel better if you run with your upper body a bit forward. You will actually lean a bit and won't have to hold your head straight up.

Way to go Susie on that workout - now you are back on the wagon and stay put, girl. You know you want to be ready for the 5K in January! :yahoo:

I think the run wild at the zoo 5K sounds awesome, Geek! :goodvibes: Any yes, we are ready for a King Peacock too!!

Laura, I am behind you 1000% - you really can do this and it is not always about fast times. For me, it is mostly about health and happiness! :)

Can't wait to hear all about your race in the Big Easy, Rozzie!! :drunkard:

Hey, what about your first day back, nono! :listen:

CB, I don't really think they dictate what you wear to a race at Disney. In the marathon, there was a guy who only wore a red speedo and tennis shoes - was he ever a sight!! :scared07: :blech:

Okay, I am off to bed all!

Well no danger of a red speedo on MOI!!!!! LOL!

Hey...good news. Those of you following my trials (HA) and tribs know that I am po'd that I couldn't walk at 4.0 mph which used to be my 'warmup' stride. So tonight I decided to try some of Gail's advice to someone else but apply it to my own problem. Instead of my usual stride (I have fairly long legs) I took little but quicker steps. And instead of feeling that I had to break into a jog a 4.0...I walked no problem.THEN, I turned it up a 10th every minute until I was walking at 5.0. Yea!!!!! Big Thanks GAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel so much better. And, walking at 5.0 still got my heartrate too high but not nearly as high as running at 5.0.
So, I am, for a change, a happy camper tonight!!!!!!!

And my other new found knowledge is that you can go longer, faster and better wearing a running SKIRT so MR. Peacocks watch out!!!!!

Way to go CB! :)

After feeling like crud yesterday I am up and raring to go! As soon as Coops on the bus- I'm outta here!

I agree with the goals- I just turned 45. I wanted to feel 35 when I hit 45- Well I feel about 37- The pros at the Club were SHOCKED when they found out my age- Hee-hee...Did that feel GREAT! :cheerleader: I started walking/running for me- to feel better. I have allready felt such a BIG change in my attitude, zest for life, overall well being and dropping some fluff has been so positive.

I have also joined the "Biggest Loser" at my fitness club- And whos name was up on the board for the Biggest Loser of the week? :D

Right now I just want to finish a run/race- then move up to competing with myself- then maybe... just maybe strive for a win???

Again I really want to thank you guys here- you are the best of the best with inspiring me to go the distance.

OK, questions from last night--sorry I fell asleep!

1. Yeah, Gail, I'll get over there around lunchtime on Friday so I can direct Rozzie in -- she'll be getting there around 2 pm -- unless we have her fly to PHL instead of BWI and she rides down with you? (same price or less Rozzie). Her flight would arrive aournd 11 a.m. (no foolin' even with a connection through either Memphis or Charlotte).

2. Susie, yes, the ferry runs all year 'round. Just fewer crossings per day in the off-season.

I had a crazy-night's sleep last night, mostly due to thoughts about Rehoboth floating through my head. :blech:

I finally got in touch with my sister, the exercise physiologist/athletic trainer, and asked her about my pain in the neck. She said I was probably tensing my shoulders, which is apparently a common mistake in people who (attempt to) run. I do notice I do that, so it makes sense that I would be sore. She also says I should try and relax my arms and not lean forward.

I'm glad she didn't laugh at me when I said I wanted to run at 10K (she's the athlete--not me by any stretch--and runs, bikes, does 1/2 marathons and triatholons--which she apparently prefers over a full marathon because she says she get too bored training for one), but was really encouraging.

And I'm not looking forward to walk/jogging today--it's cold out!!! But I have enjoyed it so far. It's nice to have a distraction from all the stress of the day (particularly, I'm trying to move by the end of the month but haven't even found a place yet).

and another, which works for walking and running:

and here is a picture of the running form:

Nono - I am chucking my new shoes. The pronation "fix" is killing me. It might be how I walk/run but "fixing" the problem is causing me all sorts of pain. My legs were killing me at Disney after just standing and watching you guys running the 1/2 and that is nuts. So - I chalked it up to no walking in a while. BUT - now that I am walking again, they hurt more. So - bye bye shoes. Back to no correction for me no matter HOW I walk.

AMEN! In another 10 years, I predict "motion control" shoes will be a thing of the past. (Please note Peacocks, "motion control" is more extreme than "stability." )

Triple L, I always look for the "neutral runner" designation on my shoes. You are so smart not to tough it out. Good luck finding a replacement you like. :thumbsup2:

Colorado Belle

Yep...throw those suckers OUT. Sometimes I wonder if the people who fit these kinds of 'fixer' shoes, actually use them themselves? On the other hand, our bodies make adjustments to problems all the time...and sometimes the adjustments for this necessitates an adjustment for that and ...well, it never ends and then it 's so hard to finally fix the problem.

Have you tried walking in a pair of real cushiony, cozy shoes to see if having no correction but lots of cushion helps? I also found that for me standing or walking really slowly hurts a whole lot more than walking briskly. God knows why, but it's been true for decades so I doubt it will ever change for me.

Way to go biggest losah! I am envious, but so happy you're taking care of YOU now, instead of just taking care of family!

Congrats on the weight loss, I know you have been working hard--and the results are coming in! So why don't you sign up for the Half? Give yourself something extra to work for. The weight will melt off with that training program. :)

Trying to think what I could bribe Gail with. Mmmn. ;) Gail, If it works out, it would be awesome not to have a connection to deal with/rental car. My budget might work!! So let me think what I can bribe you with? So money? Wait, still owe you some money from the tow truck. Everlasting friendship? Wait, you already have that. I'll keep thinkin'. :D No pressure though, serious.

I'm on phase 2 (out of 3) to get things lined up to register. I put in my request at work. Hopefully I'll hear back soon. :fingerscrossed:

Just as long as I get up there! So when can I start checking accuweather?

Usual highs are around 55F with lows of 39F. As for travel delay, that wee bit of weather like they had last year wasn't anything that would bother any northeast airport.

I actually had a smile on my face...almost cried....and I felt great! Only did a couple of minutes, but it definitely motivated me to want to do it again & again! Lisa, if I could find a affordable flight out of Mobile (one of the nation's highest $$ airports), I know you could find a cheap SW ticket to Philly from Bham. Maybe you could share a room with Gail and help with costs? That would rock if you were able to come. No peacock left behind! :hug1: That goes for everyone!

Running outside yesterday was painful (running--hah! I'm still building up endurance by walk/jogging), quite literally as it was so cold. I think I could have handled the temps in the low 40s if it weren't for the gusty wind. I always seemed to be moving into it, no matter which direction I was headed. I didn't have any protection for my ears, so they were hurting quite badly by the end. But, it is supposed to warm back up! I can't run on a treadmill (well, I can, but it gives me a false sense of accomplishment as my biggest problem in the past when attempting to run has been pacing myself. When I run on a treadmill, it does that for me. I'm trying to learn to do that on my own).

Drat...lost my post. ARGH.

Let's all look at our schedule and family committments for morning of Jan 8 in re breakfast meet so that we don't inadvertently have a kid race or something else going on at the same time. Want to make sure all the peacocks who want to, can come. You know how I love minnie-meets. Sooz...I think a character breakfast would be great fun, but if too $$$$, we could also try that place where they mess with you (something about ketchup??) or Tonga Toast or we could even do a condo meet (I'd cook but I usually have a studio so I would have to get someone to lend me their kitchen.) So look at your schedules and arrival times and go from there.

I've never been on an elliptical machine but it does sound like torture!!!!!:rotfl2:
I guess I'm afraid of falling off any of these machines and re-hurting myself. We have a cross country ski machine that is pretty fun (tho I'd rather just go out and cross country for reals).

I do like my elliptical. I started trying one at a gym years ago. Tips for getting started? Try LOW resistance, go slowly, and if the unit can ADJUST YOUR STRIDE. I think think stride length made the biggest difference for me. I think I would be further ahead of the curve than I am now had I kept it up and done more than just 2-3 days a week back then.

OK, long story warning, but it includes two different topics if that makes it any more tolerable ;):

You see, the friend I went with didn't care for any of the cardio machines, so we switched to lap swimming for a while. I lost my job in that city and couldn't get a membership anymore, so that led to an exercise lapse of 2 or so years. Finally I switched to my home gym on April 10th 2008 and it was half of the equation to my loosing 80-84 pounds in under a year. The other half was trying to stick to 1900 calories roughly a day 9 out of 10 days of the week. Once I got down to 240# I slacked off for the holidays and maintained roughly 225 but now I'm back on track and hit a new personal low (as an adult) of 216.2 earlier this week. :D

Now if only I could get some better weather around here! Snow, rain, and/or 30s are not encouraging to this newb. Only done 3 outside runs and weights once still (since Sept. or earlier!). However, I HAVE been doing the elliptical almost every day {substitued SCUBA diving Sunday} in the morning before work. If the streets are clear (no sidewalks in my subdivision) and it isn't actively precipitating I am planning to push myself and go for a 'real' [outside] run Sat. &/or Sun. even if it's still cold in the morning.

For mid 30s/40s, would regular sweatpants, gloves, and a T-shirt under a light (nylon) jacket be appropriate? I'm trying to think what clothing I own already that might work... In the mid 50s+ I was fine w/ shorts & a T; FYI, I tend to get hot FAST when I exercise! I like the ceiling fan and the elliptical's little one boht on most days.

Thanks Craig! If I WERE to adjust the stride on the elliptical...how would I do it? The machine at the gym is all computerized....you can adjust level, but I don't remember seeing anything that said stride...unless it's called something else. I also think what happened as I was trying to figure the thing out...got out of breath and couldn't get myself back in control...so I got off & went to the bikes. Oh well...I will try again today.

CB...forgot about the price factor of character breakfasts....anything with the peacocks would be good with me!

Thanks Craig! If I WERE to adjust the stride on the elliptical...how would I do it?

At the gym I used to go to they had high end computerized ones and there was a menu setting; scroll through options like level, etc. and finally there it was as I recall. So, start button mashing. ;) If you can't find it, you could try asking an employee, or if you'd prefer let us know the make & model and I'll be happy to spend some time with Google. I'd be shocked if it didn't have a way to adjust it someplace.

My home one has a pin type of thing you pull and then click the "leg" hinge into a different spot. I think I have it set as long as it goes; 18" on my unit, but my legs are fairly long for my overall height...

Good luck!

I can't run on a treadmill (well, I can, but it gives me a false sense of accomplishment as my biggest problem in the past when attempting to run has been pacing myself. When I run on a treadmill, it does that for me. I'm trying to learn to do that on my own).

Bingo! We have a winner! That's why IMHO the treadmill should just be part of your running, not all of it. If you never learn to pace yourself without a computer doing it for you, you are never going to grasp the pacing concept in a race. ;) I am very proud of you to discovering this holy grail truth so very early in your running career. I know it took myself a lot longer.

Craig, I roast when I run. I don't wear a long sleeve unless it's going to be below 45. And then I still wear my skirt. Only when it's below freezing do I wear my UA pullover. It's thin, lightweight and built for wicking away sweat. What I do wear even with short sleeves sometimes is gloves and a bondiband over my ears. I have found that if i keep my head and hands warm, I can run in skirts/shorts and tanks for a very long time in the winter. But you see, I really heat up quick.

I'm hoping as I get better at just running for any length of time PERIOD, my body will get into a rhythm that I will get familiar with. Other than that, I have NO IDEA how to learn to pace myself . But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Oh it's a struggle. I still can't grasp learning my pace. I rely too much on my Garmin to tell me what pace I'm running. Usually I know what a 12:00 pace feels like vs a 10 min pace, vs a 8:00 pace--but how to know 8:30 vs 9:00, vs 9:15. :oweye:

I would suggest to you to get a watch that has a 50 lap memory and keep track of your splits when you are on the road. When you pass a mile, hit the split button. Then see what you are running each mile in. Are you getting faster, slower? Plus maybe have a goal before hand, let's say you want to run 4 miles in 40 minutes, you know then your splits should be 10:00 a piece. By doing this, it will help you gauge your pace and your rhythm. It takes a long time, believe me! This is one of my biggest struggles, finding my pace and keeping it.

Will have to skip the breakfast too- Coop will be doing the Mickey Mile run with Sean- :goodvibes:

Did my best time and distance yesterday on the treadmill and didn't even realize it! Chatting with the girl next to me in the super skinny hot pink spandex and me in my grey sweats (although they do have "running" stripes on the side!) and before I knew it I was at 1.15 miles in 17 min! And the best part is............ I felt GREAT! No more wobbly legs and my shins werent' screaming at me for mercy!

Funny as we were actually chatting about what nono/Roz said about being able to comfortably talk while walking/running. :)

Ok really stooopppid ???? time- :embarassed: How do you guys carry anything? And what do you carry with you when you are running? This run/walk on May 9th starts at point A ends at point B- 3 miles away from where I park my car. What do I do with my keys? And how do you get back from point B to A where my car will be?

I rely too much on my Garmin to tell me what pace I'm running.

While I'll agree that it is good to KNOW your pace, why does it seem to almost be considered bad to 'rely' on a tool like a Garmin Forerunner GPS to get a variety of helpful data? People use stopwatches all the time, this is just the logical evolution.

My perspective- In SCUBA diving people are required to use some sort of depth & time gauges for safety reasons, but digital dive computer use is recommended more and more to have more accurate data and prevent having to manually use tables. I equate the dive tables and analog gauges to a stopwatch and a dive computer to a Garmin or similar...

Why does it seem to be frowned upon in running and perhaps even disallowed in races??? I don't get it... :confused24:

Well it boils down to this, co-dependency. :D

As my coach harps to me all the time, why depend on something that is not accurate? What if your Garmin breaks in a marathon? Would you still be able to do it? (which I have heard horror stories where people will drop out of the race, totally freaking out) What if your Garmin is giving you false information? (which mine has, last time in a race last Sat) Sometimes I feel like when I am running all I am doing is staring at the screen, instead of concentrating on my pace, time, and even the beautiful outdoors. Especially if you have the screen that flashes a different pace every 2 seconds.

As my coach tells me, "back in the day" runners went on their gut, instinct, and the natural feel of their rhythm. When we use tools, we are cheating ourselves on really learning who we are as a runner. I'm not saying using a Garmin is all bad--I still wear mine to keep up with mileage and pace-- but it is my thought that we should be able to go "natural" and not feel like anything is missing.

I studied the top runners last Saturday, and I noticed 2 things. One is the they are trim and fit. No buldge, no extra luggage to be seen. Second, none of them were wearing a Garmin. ;) Just my observations only.

I won't be able to post tomorrow to wish you well the night before. I know you are going to do great, I can't wait to hear about this race. Sounds like a lot of fun--and such a great cause.

For those who asked about carrying, there are warehouses full of different fuel belts, water belts etc etc. If it's a short run, I carry my keys on a mountain climbing hook attached to the top part of my bra, or take my car key off and put it in a pocket. Longer than 5 miles, I'll carry my phone and take my spibelt. (google it!) Longer than 6, I take water and carry my Nathan water belt. It also has a pouch for keys and phone. :)

It's a beautiful day in the northeast today. Went out with Maggie (my dog for those who are new here) and had a great two mile walk. She was much better today and wasn't exhausted when we got back home. I must confess that I've been lazy for too long now and have to get back into my routine again.

Next weekend is my 3 mile walk @ Valley Forge Park. And then the following week is a 5K with my son & grandson. Dave decided to sign Matthew up so I will be with him while my son runs. I'm really looking forward to doing this with my grandson.

Garmins...I mostly use it for my distance and time because I would go crazy looking at the pace while I'm walking. I know I'm doing the same pace and it will have me at 17:00 and then a minute later at 13:00. I just look at the overall average when I get done.

Sooz & Jigger - I use a fuel belt. COm eloong races, you shoudl have your own water so tha tyou can water as you train, no neccessarily as the water stations are laid out. Plus, races havce been known to run out of water or cups. The fuel belts ctend ot come with a pocket or 2 for keys, camera, mp3,chapstick, Gus...Those are my biggest needs. I use an amphipod (amphipod.com). Lisa's is cute & pink, though. ;-)

Lisa - I think teh fan just died. It was very old. On teh birght side, I didn't lose any info. Just didn't have time to mess with getting it fixed, especially as it was over 5 years old.

Well one thing for sure I know it won't be a PR day on Sat. Limped up on my tempo run tonight, left calf pain. Had to walk the last 1/2 mile. The pain was not severe in a sense, but I did notice a gait change with the pain. Figured a 1/2 mile was not worth making it worse. Icing now, rolled it, feels better. I might just trot the 10K and root for Scott and his RP that they have a awesome run. Oh, also the traffic may hinder me too, 20K for a 10K! So I'm at peace with just going over there, hanging out with friends and getting a cool Tshirt--and having some awesome post race food. ;)

Some info re Janu 8 family fun run and the kid's run and BREAKFAST:

Family fun starts at 7 and should be over by 8 am (3 miles @ 15minmile minimum)
Kid race starts at 11:00am

Stimpy and Jiggerj: What about a breakfast @ 8:30 am which the boys should eat anyway before their race? Then they probably want to be at their race start by 10:15 or so? Does this seem reasonable or do you think it will be too hard for you two to schedule?

Well I have my first DNS! Scott's shin splints started really giving him problems last night (for those who are new, it's a on going battle) and this morning he could not even complete 1/2 mile. Called Coach who said he could either take 3 days off or 6 months off, it was up to him. ;) So no racing for us this weekend. I think he'll be okay if he just takes a few days without pounding and doing a lot of ice and toetaps. We were bummed, missed a fun time in NOLA, but we live 2.5 hours away---we can go over anytime. I'd rather him stay healthy then push it. The good news is that now I can do my LR! I haven't done one in almost a month with all these short distance races this month, and really feel the hankering to get to the roads for a few hours. Especially if I want to keep my running economy bank filled. 10 miles is on the books for tomorrow. :)

This just in...............

Got my day approved for Rehoboth. I am going to wait till' next week to start booking everything---my RP is trying to decide if she can swing it too. I will go without her, but I wanted to give her a day or two before I book the flights. Anyhoo, I started thinking, I have NO cold weather gear. I have some 3/4 tights, and gloves that gave me frostbite. (or what felt like it that morning) Some random pullovers, but I might need more to say the least. My problem is I get so HOT when I run, even in cold weather down here---I am always shedding layers and leaving at random mailbox's of people I know.

What do the Northern folk think of these gloves? I'll never forget that pain of my fingertips when I ran in that windchill of 10's last winter. Maybe these will be better?
http://www.runningwarehouse.com/descpage-NFGLV.html

I am already thinking of training runs. LR's I might head down to the Beach when it gets cold again (if it gets cold again before Nov) and practice running with a strong wind off the open water. The bay wind here in town is strong, but not like down there.

Roz,

For gloves and running, nothing beats the $5 fleece I get at Walmart. (In assorted colors). If you're paranoid, there's $7 ones that you could ski in... you can get matching headbands too! I can pick them up for you in sept/oct if they don't ship them to your Walmart. Saves you beaucoup bucks. You might want to buy a bandana though to breathe through until you are warmed up. Or I have masks.... :p

Also, don't pull the trigger toooooo fast on the airfare. Let's watch the preferred flights one that get you to PHL earlier v. later as you still have a 2+ hr drive after that -- usually Tuesdays and Wed. early are good days to book (prices go down!).

You see, another reason I need you in my life. :D I see a good deal on the early flight that has me arriving around 2pmish. ($226) A $100 cheaper than the flight out of NOLA? It keeps flashing 3 seats left at "this price". Or is that just a lure to get booking amateurs like me to book right away?

Rozzie, sorry to hear the trip was canceled! Hope Mr Roz is feeling better soon.

Haven't had a chance to try the sneakers yet, I will today. Took the kids to the city on Thursday and I started having major pains in my bladder area. Long story short, I didn't drink or eat anything since the day before, stood in line for 2 1/2 hrs for Empire State Building, no potty break until the top and then walked over 1 1/2 miles to Nintendo World. I was about to pass out from the pain. Train ride home was really bad, had fever & chills, got home and literally passed out on the bed from 6 pm until the next morning. Better today though :silly:

And I did find a way to get Sean to finish his mile run....tell him there is a Nintendo World at the end! Holy crap that kid can move fast when he has a goal! I had to grab him several times before he went into the street without looking. If we didn't have to stop for crosswalks, I think that kid could have broken a record.

My father is now in training for the 5K. He wants to know what kind of "free" stuff he gets in his goody bag :rotfl2: He's all about the extras. They're going on the DVC Member Cruise and all I keep hearing is "I wonder what freebies we'll get!?"

For those expecting a great goody bag, my advice would be to find a race other than Disney. Seriously, Disney is infamous for their cheap handouts. Like it's almost comical. I know for the ToT race ($85) I got a trial packet of uddercream. :oweye:

My 10 miler went great. One of those mornings where everything fell into place. Perfect weather, perfect sunrise, no pains. The birds were singing me all along the way, almost following me down the road. May sound cheesy, but I always think they recognize the runners/walkers and cheer them along. I think a key component to this morning was I did not run for time at all. No pace goals, just went by how my body felt. Think I looked at my Garmin twice. I think I really needed a "oh this is why I run" type of morning to help motivate me for summer. Anyway, I felt so great, never fueled either. A big deal for me, really trying to train my body to need less when I run. Lord knows I got enough fat storage in reserves.

Roz....I've decided to give you 93.78333 % of my own body fat to get you through the summer. My calculations show that you could run an equivalent of to Mars and almost back on these stores alone. I can't mail UPS due to weight contstaints, but there is a trucking firm that promises a 3-day delivery.

Stimpy: never fear, I don't tend to plan things like a disney breakfast until...oh, maybe the day before. :D (and remember this could just be a get together for coffee, mimosas and omelets at one of our rooms with a drop in and stay as long as you like theme) Of course, that isn't the best place to show off our medals, I grant ya! And at worst, we can always do lunch instead!

Sorry about the shin splint injury Scott. But you have so many races in your future that missing one to prevent more injury is a smart way of thinking!

I did my treadmill walking where I increase from warm up 3.5 by a tenth of a mile speed to 5.0. Later, instead of doing my other mile, I helped out at the Elks...prep cooking for Easter Sunday Brunch...I must have peeled 100 potatoes and my back was KILLING ME, god knows I'd never make it in the Army kitchens....but I took a break cuz Hannah was patiently sitting in the car (3 hours) and ran around the parking lot with her..she was excited and I must have looked pretty silly to passerbys in my apron!!!!

Does anyone dye eggs for Easter anymore? I miss it. Thought the Elks might do it for the kids, but they bought those plastic eggs to hide instead.

Have a great trip Susie! You are staying at the best place for runners and walkers. Try the trip from SSR to DTD to OKW at daybreak. It is what heaven must be like. :goodvibes:

CB, I do miss dyeing eggs. That was always a good memory with my grandparents. I dyed eggs with my mom for the first time last year with her grandson. Speaking of family and Easter....Bahhhhh! Bahhhhh! What's that sound you say? That's the black sheep telling everyone off! It appears I am not invited to the family Easter celebration. I knew it would be like this when my mom moved away, my extended family does not even know when my birthday is. Oh well, I plan to run, clean and relax tomorrow--could care less about going somewhere and eating a bunch of calories I don't need.

Gotta clean, my MIL is coming in town Monday, staying for 7 days. Think I'll be getting a lot of miles in next week for sure!!!!!

Stimpy, when are you going to try out your shoes? ;)

stimpy
04-11-2009, 03:12 PM
I tried the shoes today.....I think I have to break them in and get used to wearing something on my feet again when I walk/run  After the first 1/2 mile I took them off b/c they just felt heavy...again, I'm too used to my socks LOL The good news is that my new running socks are awesome :rotfl2: And I'm down to 14:37 for a mile. Not bad considering I started at 18:50 and haven't done any kind of running since I had to in college. I have noticed my jeans are getting a tad looser.

We just finished dyeing our eggs....Tara decided the dipper was too much work and now has rainbow colored hands :silly:

I agree with this! You will get there sooner than you think!! So when you do get there (and you will!!!)--It's a good rule of them to have warm up time and cool down time, especially important in 5ks. We do at least a warm up mile anyway before races, and add at least a mile or two to the end of 5K's. You can walk back the 3 miles, it's not that far really. Think of how much walking you do at Disney! ;) I know I know, I'm nutty. Maybe you can get someone to drop your car off, or you could email the RD and see if they have a bus that is taking race participants back to the start. I'm sure there is a logical solution that will present itself. :)

I'm thinking that one of your kids will be at the finish line....and she can drive you wherever you need to go! (That's why they got their driver's licenses isn't it?

I was wondering about 'warming up'. Since we have to be at the start about 45 minutes early...do most people do stretch/yoga type warmups or does everyone jog around to get loose?

Rozzie
04-12-2009, 11:06 AM
CB, I don't stretch cold muscles--bad experience for me doing that. Some people do stretch or do yoga moves and it works great for them. I know Scott does well with stretching before hand. What I do is do a warmup very light jog for about a mile then do light stretching or yoga moves. Now for the Half I did not do the warm up mile as I knew I would be starting slower. I walked around then did some light yoga moves, especially to do my piriformis. Basically this is how it was explained to me, 5K's are speedwork, and you would never do speedwork without some type of warmup. Longer endurance races, as long as you plan to start out conservative, some light stretching is all you might need. Light stretching for me is arm circles, etc. No laying on the ground going "to town". :D

I say all this as just a "what I do/what works for me". One thing you will find about running/walking is that you will find what works best for you. It's a long process though figuring all that out, I know I still have a long way to go before I get a definite routine down pat.

CB, even for a 5K, I like to stand around before hand like a zombie. I conserve every ounce of energy for race time. Then, for a 5K, when the gun goes off, I pretend I just pulled my first pickpocket and it turns out the person I pickpocketed had a lot of friends. And now they are all chasing me. :scared07: Makes me run like hell and not care about pulling anything.

So far, it's worked well. Mental imagery. The 4th secret. :D

Did you look at my log leading up the that PR? You could drive a truck through it...not much running. So, since I hadn't done Secret #1 (training, training, training) very well, I had to drop down to Secret #4. :D

What are Secret #2 and Secret #3? #2 would be nutrition, #3 would be race plan (splits, goals, etc).

Talladega 21000 Half Marathon

Yesterday, I participated in the Talladega 21000 Half Marathon! It was the inaugural running of this new race to benefit prostate Cancer Research! I ran this race in honor of my Dad, a prostate cancer survivor. Here is a picture of my back, lol.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/withspirit/Race%20photos/DSC02114.jpg

It was exciting also because it is the first time I have ever combined running a race with raising money for a cause! In all, I raised $600 – YAY! My goal was $1000 and I am proud of the results for reaching high! :cheerleader:

Talladega is almost one hour from my home so DH and I were up by 4:30am. They strongly suggested getting there no later than 7:30, preferably 7am to avoid delays and the race was not until 8:30am. We did arrive around 7am and they directed us into the tunnel that leads to the infield of the racetrack. It was very cool! Then, it was a waiting game! There were about 500 runners. They had regular bathrooms for us which was a very nice bonus. The only time port-a pots were used was out away from the track at water stops. You might think it was warm on April 11 in Alabama – NOT! It was very windy and cold. I added on the tech shirt they gave me even though it did not match!!

The race began a few minutes after the planned start and we were on the track for the first maybe 1.75 miles of the run before we headed off to a route leading around the outside of the track. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/withspirit/Race%20photos/Photo_041109_001.jpg

Now, the biggest drawback to this course was that even at the bottom of the pavement (on the actual racetrack) closest to the grass infield still had a slight slant… I was glad to run up the hill and see what came next! The first couple of miles I actually clocked in at barely under 13 minute miles. That got me excited and I wondered how the rest of the race would feel =) We ran out to the outer edges of the parkgrounds past all the many parking areas (they were grassy so not ugly to look at). Then, we headed up what I remember as a graveled road, I had to watch carefully, lol! This was a pretty rolling section of the course and at the top of the hill we went level and there was a gorgeous view for a bit. That view had to be the prettiest part of the course. It made me want to do a run through a forest or park in the future :w00t: Then, we hit the downhill. I always have to be careful on those not to hurt my knees if they are steep.

Onward we went to the main road that leads to the racetrack. They diverted the cars a bit here and we ran down to mile six at the entrance. I got a good picture as I ran with my camera =) http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/withspirit/Race%20photos/DSC02122.jpg I decided at this point that I was running about average 13:20 miles and felt really good still! Come to think of it, at mile 6, the clock there said 1:20 and I was about 12 seconds behind in the pack at the start =) Now, I really should have taken some medicine for my joints at this point at least but I was having a good time and the thought never even entered my mind… :scared07:

The course led us around the outside of the track for a time and then up into the grandstands. They had bathrooms open here too – how nice for those who needed it :goodvibes: I got to mile 8 and still felt awesome and although I noticed that it was my slowest mile so far, it had some challenging sections of up and downhill plus a fierce headwind. We had quite a bit of headwind and I remember looking at my 305 and trying to run faster to combat the winds. I figured I would pick up the pace again but then everything changed. At about mile 8.8, I realized that I had not taken anything for joint pain and I had been out there almost two hours! The reason I noticed it was that I had begun to hurt and it increased a lot from there on. I took the meds and pushed on! Here are a couple pics from the run:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/withspirit/Race%20photos/DSC02119.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/withspirit/Race%20photos/DSC02116.jpg
We left the grandstands and went down and on the outside of the track. At times I could hear runners being welcomed home by name. That was both motivating and depressing at the same time, lol! The first time I noticed that was about mile 7.5 for me!!! At close to Mile 10, the course headed onto the infield. Rick texted me that he could finally see me. Spectators had to spend the whole race on the infield, by the way, and the only cheerers were the volunteers at the water stations. I was in pain and starting to really worry about my pace falling off. That is most frustrating for me that I have plenty of stamina and oxygen and my body just won’t always cooperate… There was one final water stop at the last curve of the infield and then I was out on the race track for the final lap to the finish.

That is one incredibly long lap around the Talladega racetrack (around two miles). Had I taken better care of myself, I would have enjoyed this part more because it is really kind of cool to do it. As I was running the early stretch, I caught up with someone I had not seen before in front of me so I knew she had really fallen off her pace too. Her name was Kristin and she was running her first ever Half Marathon! Her foot was pretty badly blistered. I walked for a bit with her and then told her I had dropped to run one minute walk two minutes from my usual 2/3’s and did she want to try it with me. She was game and we made our way pretty slowly around the final mile and a half together. What really was hardest about this race was the stretches of race track that were steeply banked. There really was no pavement not banked at least a little bit so we walked and ran on the grass for portions of the final lap.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/withspirit/Race%20photos/Photo_041109_004.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/withspirit/Race%20photos/Photo_041109_005.jpg
When we saw the finish line we ran in together and Kristin and I both thanked each other for being there at the end :hug1:

I still don’t know my actual chip time and when I finished, Rick was right there to welcome me at the finish line so I wandered off with him and my GPS was just running and running. By the time I realized it, it had been on for over ten minutes after the race, LOL! Sometimes, I’m just not that smart about all this. I thought my time was around 3:05 but I’ll report the actual time later. They handed out Talladega 21000 Half Marathon racing caps to all the finishers. I was fine with it because I ran for my Dad anyway. I hope they do a medal in future years. I’ll want a medal if I attempt the race again – I need a bribe to run, haha!

They had a very nice after party in one of the pit garages – here are a couple of pictures from that.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/withspirit/Race%20photos/DSC02123.jpg
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d182/withspirit/Race%20photos/DSC02125.jpg
There was a very good band and great barbeque. They served beer (and wine too, surprisingly), of course. They even offered a spot to runners to shower and change too right there so this racetrack location is really great in many ways. Rick ate earlier on a ticket I bought him while I was out running. We came up with a new private joke about slow runners like myself. Rick said they had pork, chicken and turkey barbeque sandwiches at 11am. By the time, I walked in at 11:45, they had turkey sandwiches only. You gotta run faster if you want something besides turkey!! :D

I felt much better right away (partly because the meds were working, lol) and I had a nice time at the party! Today, I feel really good! No knee pain whatsoever – YAY!!!! I have some well earned quad muscle soreness and that is pretty much it. I plan to take a rest for a bit and just maintain my base for now. No races likely until the fall.

(The lesser quality pictures were ones Rick took on his cell phone )

Cool runnings, Lisa! How nice of you to help the blistered foot lady to the finish.

I think I know what you mean about banked/slanted paths: when I was young and foolish, I decided to beach run with my then H and his buds. The running was fine, tho I hadn't done it ever before, at least I was way fit. But ohmygod...running on a beach that slants down to the water is killer on ankles. The next day I couldn't walk AT ALL. Bad memory!

I did know ahead of time there would be no bling but I figure they could make a great medal for a run like this if it takes off and becomes very popular! :D

You can see in a couple of pictures when I was running at the top that the people running down on the course were right at the edge of the grass. You could tell a lot of us ran on the grass even though the ground was a bit soft and you had to dodge antbeds, lol!! :scared07:

I am still glad I did the race and I feel fine today! Muscles that are talking to me now are the quads and the glutes

Congrats on your weight loss, I've been meaning to ask you how did it. Did you follow something special? I love reading weight loss stories, very inspirational to me who still has some weight to lose.

First off I started exercising regularly (twice one week, then three days, four, then 5 -7 for 30 min. or more on the elliptical) and counting calories. Big change from, uh, NO exercise and probably close to 5k or more calories (have to do something 'bad' to top 300 pounds!). My target is 1900 cal/day. Sometimes I let the calories slide, especially if I'm going out to eat or with friends ("game night" is a time when I basically free feed including a bunch of junk food, but it's only once every other week...) but then I still try to be reasonable. I wasn't very diligent about the exercise from mid. Nov. to sometime in January (log book is at home or I'd check); no good reason, but at least I kept myself around my 225 # by my (Oct.) birthday goal during that time!

Moving on, I made up the program myself, and when I'm being strict about it I was losing about 2-3 lbs. a week, which kept me in the 'no more than 1%' ballpark. One major thing was cutting out sugar sweetened beverages and loads of fruit juice! I like to drink 1 - 1.5 gallons of liquid (NO, not alcohol!) daily and a LOT of that was caloricly heavy; probably close to 2k a day right there.

As for what I did try to eat: A (3 oz. ?) yogurt "shot" before some morning medicine (take w/ food...). Then do the exercise followed by a 14 oz. glass of pickle juice {I know, some people think :blech:. I make it with a vegatable juicer; got the idea from http://www.bobspicklepops.com/ [which I saw on Food Network (always loved pickles and drank leftover juice since I was little)]} & a light Baby Bell cheese mini-wheel (50 cal.). That gives me some proteain on both sides of exercise + replaces salt. Serving of oatmeal w/ 2 Tbs. flax seed. Then I have a V8 + some diet tea at work and three to four (14 oz. Disney refillable ;)) mugs of water at work. in the middle of that I have one can of SlimFast Optima, and sometimes around 4 I'll add a protein water packet to water instead of the clear stuff.

Dinner targets 1000 calories; I like bulk so counting that out necessitates eating lower fat things. I also love salads, so various types of those have become more frequent.

Bedtime snack is 7 oz. of milk (2% lately; lower %s are nasty) and ~1 oz. Rold Gold Tiny Twists pretzels [my favorite; other brands & shapes just don't seem as good], maybe a Healthy Choice fudge bar, etc. to 'use up' my remaining budget of calories. I used to have the cheese at night, but read that protein after exercise = good, so I moved that to the mornings a few months ago. I also have a fish oil capsole in the morning and again at night; they are 10 calories each. ;)

I've tracked the calories in Excel spreadsheets for the past few months when I'm on the wagon; made kind of a (sick & demented?) game out of it. before I did it all in my head, but sometimes that made it easy to loose count, ESPECAILLY when i was deviating from my meal "plan" (weekends!!!) but still wanted my day's end #s to come out all right!

Hopefully all that wasn't TMI :oweye:, but hey, you asked! :silly:

Woke up sick again -- sore throat.

Soooooooooo, in going all crunchy granola like I like to do, I went back to see what I did a couple years ago the last time I had a cold I couldn't shake. Turns out I fasted for a week. A hardcore one. 7 days, with just psylium(sp?) pills to put bulk through my system and clean out the tract.

Well a side effect of that process is that it got me mucus-free for almost 2 years. However, I'm not in need of a digestive cleanse, so I'm going to do a 2 or 3 day greens veggie fast with watercress and some other things that are supposedly helpful. Interestingly, there's several choices, but why I chose watercress is that it also helps with gum bleeding, which I have suddenly been experiencing lately. So, a couple days of that and I will see if it has any effect.

I'm easing into the fast using V-8 (high in watercress) and eating a few carrots, as my regular MD always suggests some raw crunchy veggies on the way in and out of a fast.

Carrot anyone? :rotfl2:

Oh, I also threw out my training plan this morning for my upcoming 10K and decided to jump in with one of Matt Fitzgerald's training plans for 10K. I'll be using his plan for marathon training. I don't have time for the whole ramp up as the 10K is 5/16, but I'll get a dose of his rhythm for training. Feel relief at this decision. (Is that me, or the fast talking!)

Had my 1st really disappointing day and I am so mad at myself & my body. I was getting really bad shin splints today and had to keep stopping. I was ready to cry b/c I was so upset about it. :boohoohoo: I forced myself to finish the mile, time wasn't too bad and forced myself to continue with a slower pace walk until 20 minutes was up....then I just had to stop. Story of my life, everytime I start getting excited about something, something else happens to just throw me totally off. :(

Stimpy, were you wearing your new shoes? If not, maybe you really need to be wearing something. The pounding on the TM may be causing the shins to hurt more. Also toe taps! Google shin splints and there are lots of exercises to help them. Also lots of ice. Ice every night. Running "injuries" do get better, but it usually requires us taking the wheel and putting 100% effort into the recovery. Maybe send Scott a message about what he's doing for his shins. I know our coach also says to do the "duck walk", toe taps, ice ice and more ice. Shin Splints get better, just takes time and effort. Don't let this get you down, and lord don't give up. If we quit everything we wanted to do when things got a little rough, we'd never accomplish anything. Just think how wonderful it's going to feel when you do accomplish this, and to see what mountains you climbed to get you there. Hang in there, you can so do this! :hug1:

Had my 1st really disappointing day and I am so mad at myself & my body. ...

We all have our off days. Sure, it's easier said than done but shake it off and resume tomorrow. WHATEVER you do, do NOT give up! I'm not sure what angry peacocks do to people, but I am sure I don't want to find out! On a more serious note, I think Rozzie has a lot better health advice than I could give ;) and I hope it helps with the shin splints. Good luck!

:silly:

Brother Craig? My long lost brother? hehehe. When I do something, I never do it half way. For better or for worse. I am doing Calorie King right now, and I really like how it not only calculates my Kcals for the day, how many I have left, suggestions to eat, but breaks up into percentages of protein, carbs, and fat. Just 2 days I have noticed I am too high in carbs, and that is no pasta or whole bread. My target is 1500 Kcal right now, taken from my Periodization nutrition book for Endurance athletes. (nono turned me onto it) I'll up my kcal target too this summer when I in full blown marathon training as the book suggests. Thanks for sharing your plan, I love pickles, I might have to pick up some pickle juice. :)

Laura, LOL, the Rocky theme in my head has helped me on many a hard run!

Nono, hope you have a happy successful fast. I am sure there is a ecard from American Greetings for that. Ha! Seriously hope you are feeling better. Good luck with the 10K training plan, is it very different than what you set out to do originally?

Thanks Craig and Jigger! :goodvibes:

Craig, based on your food plan, I would say you are still a huge fan of liquids :D Well, I am too - my liquids consist of two cups of coffee in the am and then an average 10 cups of water the rest of the day :silly:

I'm in detox right now, not nono style, but just eating healthier after my Easter candy binge :scared07:

Well, my fast got thrown a curve with Harry Kalas dying yesterday. Fasts tend to make me emotional anyways...he was a Phillies announcer since 1971...when I was just starting to understand and enjoy the game. Every clip they showed yesterday was a blast from my past, and tied to my Dad. I was just :boohoohoo: all over the place! So, I knew I needed a new plan as dinner rolled around, 'cause I was already emotional, and didn't need to go into insane mode by pushing the fast because it was "on the schedule." As the running authors say, "Put the plan in pencil and make ajustments as needed."

So, I did have dinner with the fam -- and will do so for the rest of the week. Breakfast and lunch is still mostly watercress drink or a soup, but dinner will be watercress and dinner. I should note that I like the taste of watercress, so this isn't a hardship! :D

As for the 10K plan, yeah, it's much different. Lots more drills and shorter runs. (It's really the base build part of his level 2 plan for the 10K). I should probably jump in farther along, but as I'm feeling kinda burnt out now, I figured an easy plan was better as I'm more likely to keep it.

Also, the last time I ran this race was the first time I ever went for the 10K length, so I think I'm a little more trained-up this time. Of course, I need to go buy two cinderblocks later today so I can do a little downhill work before race day....maybe I'll do that this afternoon.

OK, I'm guessing you're joking but Huh? I (shockingly) don't get it! :rotfl2:

And in other news- I just registered for the 5K in the Zoo I posted a while back: http://www.runwildforacure.com/. It's on May 9th. Not that far away. I know I can do a little over 5K in under 35 minutes on relatively level ground (Garmin says around 900 ft. each up and down in elevation changes over my entire course [it's on foot from my front door zig-zagging around my neighborhood and back, forming a funky loop]). I know the Zoo has some BIG hills in it, so I'm not sure how much that will clobber me. Maybe the course won't have us summit all of the main one, but I have no idea what it will be. We'll have to wait and see!!! My first 'real' race (excludes a few 1 mile fun runs when I was a kid)... :fingerscrossed:

Also, I bought myself two short sleeve quick drying running shirts from: http://www.runnersreward.com/ - one classic, the other mesh. I figured for under $22 (I wear a XXL, they cost a little extra) I can try and finish the look and maybe make it seem like I know what I'm doing, at least until I start actually running!!! :silly:

Geek, I would have thought you'd be the first person to get it! Treadmills do a lousy job of simulating downhill running. To fix it, one must prop up the rear of the TM. So, I finally am going out to get some as the 10K is in a moderately hilly area. Cool thing about getting cinder blocks v. a fence post or something like that is that it's 6 x 8 x 12 (if I recall correctly). So the downhill can be adjusted. :thumbsup2:

:oweye: Doh! Makes perfect sense now. Happy blocking! :woohoodance: I missed that they were for your treadmill... I think there are 8 x 8 x 16 and 4 x 8 x 16 blocks. I know they are expensive (let's see, 4 blocks + tax = ~$7 depending on where you live?), but if I were you I might buy two of each size for maximum versatility! ;)

$1.20 each. My husband actually went and got them and was irritated they were out of the 8 x 8s...he got me two 4 x 8s and figured we can add two more if necessary. I'm happy to start this afternoon with a couple miles downhill with just a 4" decline. I'll let you guys know what I think afterwards.

Supposedly, DOMS* is caused by downhill running...and I want my 2 weeks of rest to be pain-free!

P.S. My 2 weeks of rest start the day after my next race.

Did a "power walk" this afternoon- not sure of the distance ( I REALLY wanna get one of those whojamajig thingys that tell you the distance) but man! So much EASIER outside! Of course the road was FLAT though!

I have a VERY long stride and sometime trip myself up on the treadmill- Poor little Coop was jogging along beside me- I guess he is officially in training too for Jan! :goodvibes:

Cool! I'm June 1. It'll be neat to see how each of our programs develop. I'm sure they'll both get us to the finish line, for sure!

OK, before I forget (again) to type this: DISNEYGEEK, congrats on your decision to run the 5K at the Zoo! I can't wait for your race report!!!!

I did my first day of 10K training...2 miles downhill (4" side of cinder block was definitely noticeable and fun!) on treadmill. Then outside in the rain to do my drills up and down the block (kids watching me from windows inside). I had to hop on one leg and then run like I was a human basketball hoop. (Buy the book Brain Training if you really want to know why I'm doing this  ). Then back inside for a "regular" 2 miles on the treadmill.

I can run pretty good on just watercress for 2 meals a day! :D Must be the "fuel belt" I'm still carrying around my hips/legs...

Yep Disneygeek, I can't wait to hear all about your first 5K at the zoo. That sounds sooo cool!

Laura, it's awesome to be outside---and you are right, soooo much easier! :)

jiggerj told me this happened to her and I laughed.

MY TURN: I was doing a 5mph jog on my tm as an 'afterthought' to my regular walk. (just for .25 mile cuz I figured I could 'run' for a quarter and walk for 3/4 and so on for the 5k). anyhow, it wasn't all that hard but all of a sudden I felt like I had to work harder...so I looked at my readout and the tm had gone up to a 5% grade at 6.5 mph......I'll tell ya tho , that going back to 5mph and no grade was a cinch!!!!!:D

I'm heading out to get food shopping done in this Day 2 of our Nor'easter. Quick question before I go....

Has Tower of Terror registration opened?

I don't know about TOT but I wish I was going!!!
