Not that it would surprise most of you, but I read the Island Packet, Hilton Head\'s daily newspaper, online just about every day.
Anyway, there was a story I was following that may have come to an end today. Just wish there were pictures to go with it.
Here goes:
Eyeball, tongue found on beach
By Daniel Brownstein
Published Tuesday, May 6, 2008
An eyeball and tongue found on a north Hilton Head Island beach early Sunday are not human, the Beaufort County Sheriff\'s Office said Monday.
Beachcombers near Port Royal Plantation found the remains and, fearing that they were human, called police.
A pathologist examined the items and determined they were from marine life, said Capt. Toby McSwain, who was unsure what species to which they belong.

Let\'s go! I\'m thirsty! Impatient passenger beats fellow taxi rider
by Daniel Brownstein
Published Thursday, May 15, 2008
A taxi passenger eager to get to a Hilton Head Island bar attacked another passenger for delaying the cab\'s departure, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff\'s report released Wednesday.
The incident occurred at 1:50 a.m. Tuesday in front of a home on Brams Point Road.
The 22-year-old male victim was leaving a friend\'s house and had asked the taxi driver to wait a few minutes while he went back inside to ask his friend something, the report stated. The victim was described as \"grossly intoxicated.\"
That delay enraged the man who was already in the Yellow Cab. He had been picked up from Gum Tree Road and was headed to Rider\'s Lounge when the taxi driver was dispatched to pick up another fare in nearby Spanish Wells Plantation.
The suspect pushed the man to the ground, apologized as the victim called police and then ran off into the woods.

Wow, why didn\'t I think of that-reading the [i]Island Packet[/i? I\'m going to try to find it and hopefully it\'s free to read on-line. Thanks so much for the idea.

Sex on the beach: Horseshoe crabs crowd area shorelines to reproduce
By LIZ MITCHELL

Published Friday, May 16, 2008
During mating season, horseshoe crabs have no problem getting lucky.
After all, they\'ve been getting together to reproduce for more than 400 million years.
Peak mating season is in full swing, so to speak, from now through June.
At high tide and during full or new moons, local beach walkers can expect to see the fierce-looking, U-shaped creatures with pointy tails and spiny backs. There\'s no need to fear. These prehistoric animals are harmless and come to the beach to spawn and lay their eggs.
Males, typically 20 percent smaller than females, have two special legs designed to grip females during the mating ritual. Females lay about 80,000 eggs a year.

Popular Daufuskie pig shot with shotgun
From staff reports
Published Thursday, June 5, 2008
A Daufuskie Island couple have now twice had their pets shot.
The latest incident occurred sometime Tuesday when the couple\'s pet pig was shot in the rear with a shotgun, said Capt. Toby McSwain of the Beaufort County Sheriff\'s Office.
The pig was kept in a pen at the Prospect Hill Lane home of Tyler Gerow and Beth Shipman. They could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Authorities say they have several potential culprits in mind and are investigating.
\"We\'ve got some people we\'re looking at,\" McSwain said.
Last August, the couple\'s exotic bird was shot and killed. The bird had been allowed to roam free, and was somewhat of a fixture on the remote, tight-knit island. No charges ever were filed in that incident.

This is a record nesting year on Hilton Head, where 199 loggerhead nests have been discovered.

Nearly naked woman beats the heat by diving through closed motel window
From staff reports
Published Wednesday, December 10, 2008
The front desk manager of a Hilton Head Island motel was surprised when a nearly naked woman covered in blood jumped over the counter early Saturday morning, according to a Beaufort County sheriff's report released Tuesday.
The 24-year-old Bronx, N.Y., woman shouted that she had just been shot, which was untrue, the report said.
She had just snorted cocaine in a room at Days Inn, 9 Marina Side Drive, and jumped through the closed, first-story window when she became too hot, the report said.
The woman, who was wearing only panties, was taken to Hilton Head Hospital, where she was treated for non-life threatening cuts.

Love is in the air and alligators are everywhere
By JOSH LANIER

As alligator mating season blooms, an ever increasing number of the reptiles is ending up on front porches, in swimming pools and in backyards of Beaufort County homes.
More than 11 alligators have been captured in the county since Friday afternoon, Critter Management owner Joe Maffo said Sunday evening, including a 10-foot female found Saturday night wandering around a Hilton Head Island retirement community. Two Hilton Head gators were captured Sunday afternoon. Both were relatively small, Maffo said.
"Their hormones are raging right now," Maffo said. "They're really coming out like I've never seen before."
Many alligators will return to their last mating spot to rekindle a romance, but due to development many of those places have been paved or built upon. Maffo didn't have statistics on the number of alligators he's captured this year, but said it's up from previous mating seasons.
Mating begins in early March when waters warm, and generally subsides by July, according to the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.
For the most part, Maffo said, alligators will leave people alone, but if you feel threatened by a gator or have one show up unexpectedly on a doorstep, call 911. For safety's sake, don't approach a gator, he said, and don't try to capture it.
While attacks on people are rare, alligators still can cause major problems for humans. (ETA: Umm, ya think?)
A 47-year-old Savannah man was killed May 8 after swerving to miss an alligator lying across S.C. 170 in Jasper County. He lost control of his car and collided with an oncoming Greyhound bus.
South Carolina has instituted a hunting season for alligators, which this year will be Sept. 12 through Oct. 10. (Now THIS would make a great addition to the resort's daily activities list!)

Joe Maffo, president of Critter Management Inc., shows off the nearly 7-foot-long, 100-pound alligator he captured Sunday night at Walmart on Hilton Head Island. Maffo, who brought the gator by the Packet office on Monday, believes the alligator came out of a lagoon near the store looking for a warm place in the sun.

I'm such a slacker.
I'm reviving an old thread I used to enjoy to share a story from the Island Packet (Hilton Head's newspaper.) This story actually comes from Beaufort, SC, the next town over.
A family in Beaufort was selected this week for the Extreme Home Makeover show. Read more here; http://www.islandpacket.com/2011/01/11/1507483/extreme-makeover-selects-beaufort.html
Beaufort is a nice town, not far from the resort, and more or less home to Parris Island. From the north end of HHI you look across the Port Royal Sound at Parris Island.
Long story short, Dad's deployed in Afghanistan (again). The house is falling down around them, and they seem like darn nice people.

That is a eally nice article, but whoever took the picture of Ty Pennington-my first thought was that he was a homeless man in need of a hot meal. I guess he's just cold, but that hat! Someone ought to get him for "What Not to Wear"!;) Of course, I'm always the height of stylishness, never see myself wearing "What not to Wear" attire.;)
