I'm planning a trip with my sister, her husband, and her three kids (and of course my hubbie too). Her kids are twins who will be 12.5 (a boy and a girl) and a boy who will be 7.5. We will be staying at AKV and had narrowed down the sit-down dining options with them to Boma, Teppan Edo, and Sci Fi diner. But since we're only there for 4 days and we don't want to tie the kids down too much to planned dinners - she wants to narrow it to 2.
I was thinking Boma and Sci Fi. My hubbie and I love Teppan Edo, but figured it might be interesting to try something different and we've never been to Sci Fi. Boma would just be cool b/c of the African influence - something neat for everyone.
Any thoughts or advice? Is Sci Fi a good choice?

I personally didn't care for Sci Fi's food and lack of selection but that's just me... I would say stick with Boma & Teppan Edo. Your kids are also the right age to enjoy 50's prime time cafe at Hollywood studios if you needed to eat dinner at the park

Another big vote for Boma.
Sci-Fi is mixed. Food was fine, nothing special, but the atmosphere for me was odd. I really didn't care for staring at the screen for 45+ minutes while we ate. If you're in that park and need place, try it. But I don't think it's worth going out of your way.
How about Beaches and Cream? We usually eat there with our 15 and 12 year old. Usually we'll split two entres between the four of us and then enjoy the ice cream creations.
How about the counter service in Mexico? or England? Tacos and Fish and chips usually appeal to our kids as well.

I just booked Sci-Fi just to try it.
I would absolutely recommend Beaches and Cream, that is our favorite spot for burgers and ice-cream.

This is a case of Different Strokes for Different Folks. My kids and I love sci fi dine in. We get a kick out of watching the silly old sci fi movies--the special effects are such a hoot! We like eating in the car, and we LOVE the shakes. So thick you have to eat them with a spoon. I like the ribs a lot.
Between the two you mentioned, here's my two cents:
I would say if you're looking for a "dining" experience go for Boma. The food there seems to get constant rave reviews. One caveat--if the kids are picky eaters or don't like to eat foods that are out of the ordinary you might want to avoid a place like Boma.
If you're looking for a theme-type fun dinner, go for sci fi. I would stick with the basic type food--ribs, burgers, shakes, etc. and you'll do fine.
Like Rocco, I think you should also consider 50s prime time. It's a lot of fun and the ages of the kids sound just right. Yummy food too.

I did not have a good dinner experience at Boma, but I was a vegeterian at the time when I ate there. There were vegeterian options, but I'm not a big fan of couscous, so things were somewhat limited. It definitely is not for the faint of (dining) heart.
I have never been disappointed at Teppan Edo, but I understand wanting to try something new.

On my recent trip to the AKL, I was totally blown away by the resort!
With the exception of Boma.
Perhaps my expectations were too high because of the constant praise that's heaped on it, but I was disapointed.
I'm not a buffet person though, so that probably weighed on my feelings.
On the other hand, I find the Sci-Fi drive in to be a totally unique WDW dining experience.
Sure the food is nothing special, but in that environment? Many won't care.
It not a place for foodies, but a can't miss for everybody else.:eating:

haven't been to Boma yet, but DW & I liked Sci-Fi and I think it is a fun experience. No kids but they would probably enjoy the novelty of it, and the food is nothing special as I recall, but that can be a safe bet with kids... And some adults for that matter!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. We need to make our decisions tonight as tomorrow we hit the magic 90 days ahead. I think we will opt for Boma and Sci Fi.
Beaches and Cream sounds like a good option too - so maybe we'll try that - you don't need reservations there do you?

One of the few truely bad meals we've ever had at WDW was at Sci Fi. And it wasn't just one entree, both were terrible.

I've eaten at Boma once....not into buffets, but for a buffet it was good and then you can go out and use the night goggles to look for wildlife and talk with the 'rangers' and otherwise see the resort...so this should be a good idea, especially if the kids will try new things.
I've eaten at Sci Fi, and while I don't think you should go there for the food (but then I'm not a hamburger/fries/shake kind of eater) the kids should see what the 'good ole days drive ins ' were like, and this is one of th efew places that they can...so go there for the theme and enjoy!
If this is a first time trip for the kids, then I think you should go to a character meal. They are probably too 'cool' to stand in line to see the characters at the parks, so going to a character buffet would give them the fun of it without losing their 'cool'.

No, you can just walk in. But at regular meal hours it will get busy. The wait outside is fun on a nice day, You can sit in a rocker on the BCV porch.
We tend to do B&C betwen lunch and dinner (1:30 - 4:30 ish) That way we usually don't wait and can build up an appetite during the day and stuff ourselves on ice cream. Yeah, it's not always a pretty sight.

I'll temper my "big" vote for Boma.
Yes we liked it, but our kids are fairly adventurous eaters. I go back and forth on my appeal of buffets. Sometimes I think they are great deals and I enjoy picking and choosing, then other times, especially after a long day in the parks, I just want to be waited on. Food quality is high in my opinion. Not 5-star high, but Disney-high. Ambiance is nothing write on the web about, in fact it can get loud. But since we weren't staying at AKL we took time to look around and even took a swim in the pool after dinner.
I'll go back for sure and still recommend it. I think you should try it. But you are right in that it receives alot of attention on the web, as does Le Cellier, and if either were a stand alone back in your home town you wouldn't be going out of your way to eat there.
