View Full Version : Sad Loss for Me

I know many of my DVC friends were aware that my dad has been very ill. He took a turn for the worse about 10 days ago and passed away this morning. Ironically enough it was almost 6 years to the day that my mother died--the anniversary of her death was yesterday.

He was 90 and lived a good life, but it's still so hard to say goodbye.
I am devestated but at the same time relieved. He was so out of it, his mind was almost gone from alzheimer's. This last week he was totally uncommunicative. He went from being "not that bad" (he knew who I was, even though he forgot much else), to being semi-comatose in a short time.

I won't be around much today, I am meeting my sister to make arrangements for the funeral and take care of other things we need to do.

RIP Dad, he was a wonderful father.

...

his mind was almost gone from alzheimer's.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Good luck in the upcoming times after the inital shock wears off. My grandfather suffered from alzheimers and I know the downward slide you are talking about. In fact, I was at the 'World when I got the call from my parents last October.

Cherish the happy memories!

Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers as well as your words of wisdom and understanding. I am sorry that so many others here have experienced the alzheimers and the pain of losing a parent or loved one. Thank you for sharing those personal memories.

My sister and I spent the day making arrangements and phone calls. Both her daughter and my older daughter were along to help out. It's been a hell of a day, but my family is close and we all have one another to lean on. Tomorrow we go clean out my dad's place (he was in an assisted living apt), and the funeral is Tuesday.

My dad was an amatuer actor and a great story teller. He wrote songs and poems for all of us in the family at one time or another. He also made up really cool stories for us when we were kids, that he would act out as he told. He may be gone but he has left quite a legacy behind, and we will pass the songs and stories on to the next generation.

Mar, Big hugs to you. Cherish the memories of the happy times together. I know you have a lot to do, just make sure you take care of yourself. It is so easy sometimes to get lost in all the arrangements you have to make. Take some time to decompress, take a bubble bath and rejuvenate. Also know all your DVC friends have you in our prayers.

Mar - your dad sounds amazing. I'm sorry he's gone - and I know what an emotional rollercoaster you must be on right now. :hug1: If anyone is able - telling one of those stories tomorrow would be so special. But I can imagine it would be hard to get through the telling.
Hang in there.:hug1:

Thank you all for making a terrible time a little less awful.

He was a really cool Dad Kenny, and you're right Tom, I was fortunate to have him as long as I did. Kristy I pulled out all the songs he wrote for me and my girls last night and we were singing them together. I have a tape of him telling one of his stories (of course now I realize I should have taped more), and we took that out but we weren't ready to watch it yet.

I so very much appreciate the love and support from everyone who has posted here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to give me your condolences and offer comforting words.

M ~ I am so sorry for your loss. My grampa had Altzheimer's and died from it in 2002. The disease is very frustrating to all parties.

I am glad that you had many years w/your dad. I know he's in a better place and is whole again w/ your mom.

Prayers, hugs & pixie dust to you and your family. :hug1:

Thanks again for all of the heartfelt and loving comments. The funeral was yesterday, so I wasn't in any state of mind to reply until now.

We tried to make the funeral more a celebration of his life than sadness over his death and I think we succeeded for the most part. All the grandkids spoke, as did my sister, her DH and me. We had solemn things to say, but we also had many fun comments about him, as he was a really fun guy. Two of the grandkids wrote poems that they read at the service. I thought that was so appropriate, as my dad was well known for his family poetry.

We went back to my sister's after the burial and talked about the stories he wrote and how much fun it was to not only listen to him tell them, but to watch him act them out and hear the sound effects he invariably added. My dad's sister's are in their 80's, but they are in good health, so they were able to be there too and tell lots of stories about their brother from when they were growing up.

All in all, although it was a sad day, I would say there was more smiling than there were tears. He lived almost 91 years, was happily married to my mom for over 60 of those years, had three daughters who adored him, a very active social life, travelled all over the world with my mom, volunteered for countless organizations, starred in numerous local theater productions, made it through WW2 (was awarded the bronze star), and more. I will miss him forever, but he had a full and satisfiying life, and when I think of that I have to smile.
