I need a new wireless router. I've been looking at reviews all morning, but none really stand out that much.

Anyone have a recommendation for me? :scratchchin: I'd like to keep it at about $100 or less. Just needed for basic stuff, no gamers at my house.

i would say get a lynksis router!

I have this one

it's not cheap but not expensive either. I think it personally gets the job done. but I play games online and I have been craving on getting a gaming router. lol!

Thanks Bradley, I will take your recommendation. If I hate it I have you to blame. :D

ETA: The reviews are not that great for the router you mentioned, I don't think I am going to buy it. Thanks anyway!

For good reviews look at http://www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com/). Lots of good reviews and can't get computer equipment cheaper anywhere else.

Linksys are decent as are Netgear. Make sure you change your SSID and password when you set her up!! Don't want anyone hacking ya!

sorry about that mar, I bought about 2 1/2yrs ago! with a friends reccomendation and I would have to say that the only problem that I have had is when I had DSL. which when the DSL would go haywire I would have to reboot the modem, I would have to do the router about 3 times. but i no longer have DSL. lol!

Great site Matt! I have had decent luck with Netgear, I went with the WNR 2000. And the site you linked had it for $15 less than my local Best Buy (with free shipping!).

Thanks for helping me Diz and Matt!

Linksys used to make pretty good routers but most of the newer ones are quite underpowered and have very little memory.

Personally I run DD-WRT on all of my routers. DD-WRT is an open source router firmware you can use to replace the factory fimware. With DD-WRT you can basically turn that $40 into a high end router.

Problem is that Linksys routers now have so little memory you can't get many of the higher end features on it any more. I would check this list and pick one that has at least 8MB of flash memory:

Silly Viking, I think that router will be too powerful for her notebook

You are welcome! This is where I order all my computer equipment when I am building one. Cheaper then anywhere else. For the longest time there was no sales tax here in NY until NY started to illegally collect it.

I thought I was needing a new router too, but the problem seems to have been fixed without having to buy anything.

BUT, I don't understand why a router needs memory? Admitedly I know next to zippo about how any of this stuff works, but can a wireless router affect the speed at which you can loan stuff?

Just about all modern day electronics have internal memory. They need to it to run internal programs as well as save settings. In the case of a router, there is a web interface that you log into and set your settings. All this is run off of and saved in memory.
