Last night we were discussing on-and -off during chat signs of recession or recovery, including crowd levels at the parks in the discussion. But what other signs are out there?

Here's one for you:

http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod70750003&ecid=NMCIMSNFeed&srccode=cii_9686437&cpncode=24-32068291-2

WTH? For $745, I want something that will never stain, never wear out, etc. and be delivered by Tarzan himself who will give me some reflexology before putting this on my foot! I see none of thoes guarantees with this purchase.

Some people are obviously not being affected yet -- don't you think there should be a discount on these shoes of at least 20%? $596 would be so much more approachable for people. :rotfl2:

But hey, using the code NMSPR you get FREE SHIPPING!!!!!!

Never got into the name brand thing, unless it was for sale at TJMAX. Ha!
I didn't notice the brand name of the shoes, but I think the price is probably discounted from the likes of Manolo's!

Just reading this with the wife. She says that they are building a brand new Neiman Marcus at the Cherry Hill Mall, so as you point out, someone has money!

Hmmm, for $745, I would expect a lot more material than just a few straps! Though I guess it would be worse; they also have $1045 sandals! :scared07:

I used to Work for Needless Mark ups. Used to make wedding cakes for them. It seemed like they marked everything up by about 300%.

Yeah. All the more reason I'm expecting bigger discounts from them currently if we are really in a depression/recession. I'm frankly quite disappointed at the lack of deals to be had currently. Makes me question the severity of the whole thing...:confused24:

They paid squat to their employees. We got a 25% discount on any purchases we made. We could get a good deal on Last Call items. And we could get some good deals. Then General Cinema bought them out and everything changed. It seemed as though even at a discount of up to 75% off their normal retail it was still out of reach even with the employee discount. Still kind of ticks me off when you look at the prices they charge.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:scared07: that is amazing! I would expect that those shoes would come with like a lifetime replacement or something! I love that women or someone would actually buy these!!! and I saw that there are some like $1000 price tag wow! that is amazing! I don't think there are such items like that for men. well, atleast I don't know of them.

anyone have a neiman marcus last call store? I think that is the last call before it goes to marshalls, ross, and tjmaxx because those items are SOOOOOOO expensive!!! I wouldn't spend $70 for a regular shirt, maybe its just me.

They, like most premium retailers, are caught in a very difficult place between trying to maintain the marketing position the spent billions creating and trying to stay afloat.

TJMaxx is licking their chops, just dying to get their hands on the cast-offs. I had to go to the KoP mall 2 weeks ago and yes, there were plenty of folks in the store, few were carrying bags out. Yet down the street at Marshalls it was as if we were reliving the glory days.

Trust me Diz, they are out there. Go to an Armani store, or even Brooks Brothers, and you can find some of that stuff. Go to a Federal courthouse and you will see men in $800 shoes and $4000 suits.

Yes, but nothing says "poseur" like Chapter 11... ;)

We can't even afford this stuff at wholesale...

Well, you probably can, but you wisely chose not to. I mean you could eat Acme mac and cheese all month and buy those shoes, but you have other values. On the other hand, we all chose to buy a vacation club, and to many that is a 'value' they may find ridiculous.

Maybe we should find the Neiman Marcus Buyers forum and find out what they value. Could be enlightening to read what they post. We might find all sorts of cost saving measures that will allow us to drop $750 on shoes.

i would imagine if we do find a neiman marcus forum then they will probably consider an $800 item with 200 off would be considered a bargain

Oh, sorry, wasn't clear. The "we" in my quote was NM...not me... :)

Why on earth would I pay their retail prices when they will be in Ch11 because they couldn't even afford to carry it at wholesale... that doesn't say "luxury" market position to me...it says fraud. Real luxe does indeed offer private sales, etc. So in times of recession, it is silly to not discount (in a luxe way) to stay as a going concern. To think that they must not discount to keep their "status" is short-sighted if they are not cash-rich. It becomes an all or nothing gamble.

When we find out they are not as cash-rich as they seem, let's plan a meet-up at the fire sale. Preceded of course by a few rounds of Yuengling. :biggulp:

Amen. I hope they have a lot of flip flops and resort-wear, otherwise, I'm toast. Not much need for the formal/business/fashionable in my world!

I went major clothes shopping when we were at WDW in Jan. My step-mom and I went into Off Saks and NM both and finally looked at each other and said "why are we in here?" Nothing that I considered all that great with the "discounts" and we were at the outlet mall shopping for good clothing at a bargain.

Took my funds elsewhere.

I was told by the same freind of ours that stays in GF or Poly everytime that they go to Disney to go to the outlet mall that they have A LOT of sales! and that he him and his family have never seen any sales that good. well, I decided to go and I didn't think there ANY sales, well in other words my type of budget sales. I did love the Eddy Baeur store there. they had a couple sales that was worth it but all the way in the back of the outlet mall.
