With 4 cell phones in the family, I am starting to think the landline house phone is really not needed and a waste of $$'s each month. At 49.99 then plus 9.99 for each cell additional thought it might be worth it to dump the 65.00 per month landline. I also read somewhere that you can transfer your house # to a cell phone. I have extra cells around here somewhere, so thought of transferring the home # to that and consider that the "home" phone.
Curious to your thoughts....
TIA! :)

I know two families that just use their cell phones, and one family is my friends who live in New Hampshire. The other family lives in Texas.

My sister dumped the landline a yr ago and hasn't missed it.
I have the most basic Verizon land line and it's only $12.00 per month. I have no long distance carrier & if I call long distance I'm billed just 0.08 per minute.
Why is your landline $65.00 ?

I didn't totally dump my landline but I went from $70/mo to $28/mo by switching to Vonage. I'd gotten fiber installed for internet access so I have *plenty* of bandwidth.

We do not have a landline either, mostly because everyone else we know has cell phones anyways. Another perk is that most of our friends and family are mostly on AT&T so it's free minutes to talk to them anyways. All you need to figure out is how many times do you use the landline a month and what type of calls are you making or receiving on it (i.e. you are calling or receiving from another landline or are you receiving or calling cell phones). If you barely use the landline, then the few calls that you would have used on it are not going to harm your cell plan. As long as you have a sufficient minute bucket on your cell plan you should be fine. Also as far as I know about transferring calls from a landline to a cell line, I believe you still have to pay for the landline plus obviously the cell that it is being sent to. You can have it sent to your personal cell as well, you necessarily do not need to have it transferred to a separte cell. My suggestion would be that if you barely use the landline, then drop it all together and just up your cell plan to the next highest minute bucket to make up for the added calls that you will be making on the cells.

No land line here. Not worth $40/mo, considering we used it maybe 2-3 times a month.

So not "forwarding" calls, but actually port the number to a cellphone? You certainly should be able to do that; usually the only restriction is being in the same geographical area.
I was cell only for a while, but eventually i added a Vonage line currently DW & I have that + two cells. Main reason- what if a cell battery is dead (or service problems are happening)? I'm thinking about changing that to Time Warner Cable (our ISP) as sometimes the voice qaulity is a little spotty with Vonage. Also, our house is LONG; might not hear it ringing depending on where you are.
There are devices that will link your cell to "regular" phone lines so you can have multiple extensions (this solves the later problem). I own a Doc-N-Talk w/ the Bluetooth adapter and have generally been happy with it:

I'll have to check on that $12 landline, Viking. I was paying $24 for basic local + unpublished number, but the price jumped up $3 the start of this year
I hate giving out my cell phone number to people I don't know. I keep my landline to make it easier to screen calls.

My daughter only has a cell phone...I think most kids who go off to college and rent houses, never stay one place long enough to justify a landline.
I went to Vonnage about 6 years ago. I pay under $16 for 5 hours a month and sometimes go over. It was great in teh beginning because Ma Bell Quest added so much in taxes, etc...the cheapest was $39 a mo. Now I think Vonnage is charging for some of those same taxes...yuck.
I used to carry my kid on MY cell phone but now, since her job covers a goodly portion of her bill, she added me to hers.
If your coverage is great from your house, I don't see why you'd need both a land line and cell...I think we all do it as craatures of habit!

I think everyone should have a land line. What if there is an emergency, and the cell towers are down?
And this commentary has nothing to do with the fact that I work for a major telecommunications company.

Not only would one need a landline, but a corded phone. I have found this comes in handy during the many power outages we have had in the past year here.

We have the Verizon FiOS triple package. That's Internet, TV, and phone. We got lots of extras with the phone package, including free calls across the country and caller ID. So I hardly use my cell phone any more, but it's necessary when I'm on vacation.

What does that 'triple threat' run per month?
I refuse to use Quest after they messed with me about 6 years ago.
I use Comcast for basic cable and hi speed internet.
Is the Verizon you use the cell phone company??? and is it available everywhere ?

It's $162 a month, but it includes everything except Cinemax. There are three movie packages with FiOS. One is HBO and Showtime, one is Cinemax only, and the other is all other movie channels (Starz, Encore, etc).
But it's not available everywhere yet. If it were available in your area, you would definitely know about it. But if you want to check, go to:

I use AT&T for my cell phone. I got my cell phone years ago. I don't even remember who I started with, but the companies themselves have changed over the years. I remember at one time I was with Cellular One, and then Cingular, and then AT&T.

Yes, everyone get FIOS! Thank you.

Call me skeptical, but in general, I don't plan to be the one at the center of the emergency and needing cell coverage. I'm not Rudolph Guiliani on 9/11. And if it is a widespread emergency, like Mother's Day and I didn't send something in advance, no even a land line can save you then. They go down then as well...;)
The Viking -- basic coverage charges vary on land line by area. So does cable costs by the same company.

I agree. If it were major mother nautre and not human mother (in law?) then conveniently, I'm a ham (amateur radio) operator so if all else fails I'll fire up one of my rigs and get in touch with people that way. There are some wide area repeaters I can reach without a problem from my car and I usually have some charged batteries in the house as well...

something else that I think is horrible about the whole landline/cell phone thing is the telemarketer's the fact that you tell them to take you off of their lists and then they call you the next day and it's the same person never fails to amaze me.

Number of times I have lost power in the last few years: 4
Longest outage: 1 week (12/11/09 NH ice storm)
Number of times my landline service was affected by anything: 3
Number of outages on my cell phone in that same time frame: *0*
Your honor, I rest my case.
